ART WITHIN SURFACES

“Sguardi Oltre l’Orizzonte”: Giving Body and Colour to Dirt “Sguardi oltre l’orizzonte” is the work of art that Enrico Sioli donated for the auction held during the event ‘Art Within Surfaces’, organised by Eos Mktg&Communication on its 10th anniversary, last year. © ipcm

“T

he desire for freedom lives in each of us. It is like a bird that is always waiting to take flight. Sometimes, you are unable to feel its presence. Sometimes, it

is so cumbersome that you cannot help but feel its weight. Look, it is there, inside of you.” This is how Enrico Sioli, an entrepreneur, manager, and representative of a leading international insurance and financial Group, interprets his work of art titled “Sguardi oltre l’Orizzonte” (Gazes beyond the horizon). Sioli has always loved expressing himself through art, and in particular, for some years now, through the ancient technique of Raku pottery. “Sguardi oltre l’Orizzonte”, created in 2012, was presented at the exhibition “Terra del Corpo” on the Italian Memorial Day of the Exiles and Foibe. The sculpture consists of a bust with a bird in the centre (65 x 40 cm). It is made of clay with the hand-moulded plate technique, coloured with crystalline powder and oxides, and treated with the Raku baking technique. Raku is a baking technique of Japanese origin, conceived in harmony with the Zen philosophy and able to enhance the harmony of small things and the beauty of the forms’ simplicity and naturalness. The origin of Raku is tied to the tea ceremony: a ritual performed with humble objects, focussed on the cup the guests exchanged; its size was such that it could be contained in the palm of a hand. The core of Raku is the contact with the matter and the elements, Earth, Water, Air, and Fire – unique, one-in-a-million objects, as in nature. The use of this art entails a demanding choice: giving body © ipcm

and soul to an idea through soil. According to the Holy Scriptures, “man took shape from clay”. There is something mystical and at the same time earthly about handling soil: the sublimation of the idea and the materiality of the mixture, the realisation of a dream and the concreteness of

Enrico Sioli and its work of art “Sguardi oltre l’Orizzonte”, which he has showed during the event ‘Art Within Surfaces’.
