EDITOR’S LETTER

“There are no failures, only results.” Eric Thyrell, inspirational speaker Richiedi la versione in italiano a info@ipcm.it

S

wedish inspirational speaker Eric Thyrell started his speech on “The Future of Sales”, which we attended during an event organised by HangOn on September 19th1, with this sentence. Regaining motivation, igniting enthusiasm, rediscovering one’s own success vision, and understanding that it is possible to get good sales results even in difficult years by simply getting used to thinking outside the box were the key concepts of his lecture. By our nature, most of us are inclined to focus on negative rather than positive aspects, on what we lack rather than what we possess, and on what we cannot change. This attitude leads us to feed our brains with negative thoughts and enter a vicious circle in which such focus on negativity continues to overwhelm the optimistic part of our beings. This is true not only for our private spheres but also, and above all, for our professional lives, especially for entrepreneurs. The success of our companies and their capability to overcome difficulties depend on our ability to think outside the box, to get out of our comfort zones to explore new territories, to realise what is not working and try something different, even if far apart from what has been done up to that point. The seed of growth takes root in discomfort. In the contemporary development scenario, dominated by digitisation and its related aspects (automation, robotics, plant modularity, and so on) also in the surface finishing industry, companies should invest in four concepts to create an added value: - Service: it is more important than ever to exceed expectations in terms of service offered, in order to guarantee economic return; - Customer loyalisation; - Ethics, with both employees and customers, in order to create a professional and commercial environment that is satisfactory for both parties; - Sustainability. You will not be surprised to find all four concepts developed in the articles contained in this ipcm® issue, which also includes a special report on surface treatment technologies for metal architecture and design. Here, they go hand in hand with a high innovation rate, a common thread among the leading companies described in the numerous success stories we present.

In order to conclude this piece with which I accompany you in the reading of ipcm® every month, I would like to share with you another thought inspired by Eric Thyrell’s speech, concerning more our psychological sphere than the social one. Very often do we tend to attribute the causes of failure to ourselves, rather than to our actions. Actually, what we have done, and not what we are, has failed. Let us keep that in mind.
