IONTAS THEATRE ARTIST-LED COLLABORATION CULTURE NIGHT 2021

DANIEL AHERNE A 2019 graduate of BIMM Dublin, Daniel Aherne has been playing bass at a professional level for the past six years. His work as a sideman for a plethora of artists and bands spanning everything from electronic pop and hip hop to progressive rock and jazz has seen him play at many of Ireland’s most iconic venues and festivals. He has performed at venues such as the Olympia Theatre, the National Concert Hall, the RDS, Vicar Street, the Academy, the Button Factory, Whelans, the Roisín Dubh, the Cork Opera house and many more. His work has also allowed him to tour nationally and perform at some of Ireland’s biggest festivals including Electric Picnic, Longitude, Forbidden Fruit, Other Voices, Body & Soul, Cork Jazz, Knockanstockan and Output Belfast. He has supported the likes of Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Songhoy Blues, Gabriel Garzón Montano, David Kitt and Hothouse Flowers. In addition to live concerts, Daniel has performed on numerous television and radio broadcasts on stations such as RTÉ 2, RTÉ 2FM, RTÉ Pulse, Today FM, 98FM, Q102 and Dublin City FM among others.

Daniel has also contributed to the writing and arrangement of many of the bands and artists he’s worked with.

K O O F is the moniker of Castleblayney artist Kevin Brennan. His work consists of Abstract, Digital, and Glitch styles, along with using classical mediums such as painting and print. He incorporates newer mediums such as computer software to create his designs. His current work consists of the relationship between light and the abstract. How shapes, forms, and patterns are created, and how they display a visual language.

CAOIMHE HOPKINSON is a musician hailing from Westport in Co. Mayo. She started playing the acoustic guitar at the age of 16 after developing a keen interest in fingerstyle playing, followed by the electric guitar a few years later when she became interested in jazz music.

She went on to study music in college - first attending Newpark, and then BIMM. Now based in Dublin, she plays with a number of Irish acts as a guitarist/bassist/MD. Her style is mostly influenced by trad, folk and jazz playing.

SIOBHAN CONYNGHAM studied History of Art at University College London, was a guest student at the Royal Academy of Arts, London and trained as a conservator of easel paintings with Paul d’Aguilar (Courtauld trained) London. She now lives and works in Ireland as an artist and painting conservator. "Painting, drawing, photographing, filming and making cyanotypes of what I see around me naturally leads on to an exploration of connected themes starting with the cycle of nature.

With the crises that the world is facing and now that we know we are in the Anthropocene Age I feel that using natural materials wherever possible is important." These paintings are made using ground pigments, earth, charcoal and tempera.

DARRAGH BRANNIGAN is a multi-instrumentalist, hailing from Skerries, Co. Dublin. He got his first taste of music at a young age, initially taking classical piano lessons from a local tutor.

Upon completion of the leaving certificate, Darragh commenced a BA in music at DkIT. It was here that he became obsessed with Irish Traditional music, focusing his studies primarily on the tenor banjo and guitar accompaniment. Since graduating, Darragh has amassed a wealth of performance experience , both nationally and internationally. A musician of broad taste, he recently added cittern (10 string bouzouki) to his arsenal, while also venturing into American Old Time music, as well developing a keen interest in Swedish Folk music. Darragh is currently completing a Masters in Music Performance at the University of Limerick.

PATRICK CONYNGHAM Patrick was born in Drogheda, Co Louth in 1959. He attended the Lee Strasbourg School of Acting in New York, before returning to London and then to Ireland in 1990. He lives and works in County Monaghan as an artist, poet and writer, with his wife Siobhan Conyngham.

The techniques used vary; sometimes the image emerges slowly through working in layers and at other times the paintings are very spontaneous. The methods include tonking ( removing of excess applied paint) with various types of paper, scratching with fingers or other tools to create texture, and throwing and flicking of paint. These are carried out in various media, including oils, acrylic, gouache, spray paint, inks, biros, crayons, powdered pigment, varnish, pencils and pastels.

JAMIE BISHOP appointed as Iontas Musician In Residence for 2021, on a paid Iontas Arts bursary, to undertake Iontas-led community projects and develop his own practice. Jamie is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter from Castleblayney, working under the pseudonym Bishopski. He is the founding member of Hatchlings. Jamie also co-founded Common Grounds Collective, a platform for aspiring creatives to share and promote their work, while also providing a network for artists to collaborate. As a result of this exposure to many artists over the past few years, Jamie’s taste and musical output are quite diverse.

While Hatchlings’ identity was steeped in folk and jazz, recorded in a live setting, Jamie’s new musical projects embrace an aesthetic inspired by hip hops’ sampling culture, punk’s raucousness, and pop music’s simplicity. His debut solo album, swindling, will be released in 2021 under the pseudonym Bishopski..
