“Welcome to Íontas, a place of Wonder!”
John McArdle recorded those words back in 2005 when our building opened its doors for the first time, and those same words have been heard and re-heard every night by our multitude of audience members every evening, before a show begins in our ever-busy theatre Over the past twenty years the phrase stands true, proven every day in the wonderful things that happen here, and the wonderful people in the community who make it so.
As I begin my fifth year as Arts Coordinator here in Íontas, I probably hear those words more often than most people, and it has given me a great amount of time to reflect on what makes this such a wonderful place to be, and indeed to be a part of Is it the vast spectrum of artwork that hangs on our walls season after season? Or indeed the wonderful stories and journeys of their creators who come and share these visions with us?
Perhaps it is the incredible talent of children, teens and adults who perform on our stage With music, dance, drama and more besides, making Íontas one of the largest platforms for local Schools and groups to showcase their artistic side! Maybe it is the music that constantly echoes through the hallways, singers, musicians, writers, always creating, sharing, practicing always flourishing Or is it the visitors we welcome through our doors? Who share with us their company, their stories, their smiles…
The truth is, I see the wonder in everything, the big things, and the small things, the great shows, the small deeds, and everyone I meet along the way. But most of all, it is in the creativity all around us, for it is creativity itself that makes us who we are, and makes us grow as people, thinking and exploring the world for ourselves Without creativity, we would simply fall into the same patterns over and over, never changing, never growing
Íontas will always be “A place of Wonder”, and it is the natural curiosity we share that always has us asking, exploring, and dare I say Wondering? I may very well continue to wonder what the future might bring… Or keep wondering what makes this town and it’s people so wonderful to call my friends and neighbours. But sometimes, not knowing the answers to all these questions is ok, especially when, everyday, I feel part of something bigger than myself, something truly special
That dear friends is the most wonderful thing of all

David Maine Íontas Arts Coordinator

François is a young teacher of French in a secondary school in a tough area of Paris. The role of the teacher is played by François Bégaudeau, upon whose novel the film is based The novel in turn is based on Bégaudeau’s own experience as a teacher Although a fictional film, it is shot in documentary style, and is absolutely riveting in its depiction of the classroom confrontation between a teacher committed to pushing his 14-15-year-old pupils to learn and the pupils’ – of multi-ethnic backgrounds – resistance to his methods and authority The film is full of
humour, but also of tension, as confrontation cannot always be controlled, particularly in this culturally diverse classroom. Widely praised in France and abroad, The Class won the major prize (Palme d’or) at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008

Wed 25th February | 7.30pm

Our classic this season is the highly regarded French film Un Coeur en Hiver, which explores the passion and conflict of a love triangle. Old friends Maxime and Stéphane run a successful violin-making and repair business. Maxime, confident and voluble, looks after the clients, while Stéphane, taciturn and introverted, is the master craftsman. Maxime falls in love with the beautiful and talented violinist, Camille, a relationship that begins to irritate Stéphane. Camille is attracted to Stéphane, who, in turn, begins to make plain his interest in her. Thus begins a film of looks, furtive glances, things half-said and unsaid, repressed desires – all brilliantly controlled by celebrated director Claude Sautet. This is no sentimental romance; rather, emotions other than love leave a wintry chill running through the three-way relationship.

“I am fascinated by how highlights, shadows, reflections and refractions created by light can effect and enhance the composition, colour and vibrancy of everyday objects and scenes. I especially like to observe and paint the effects of light on and through glass objects, on water and on surfaces. I try to share and convey my joy, pleasure and fascination with light with those who see my work.
Special moments in my life have provided inspiration for the paintings in this exhibition. These light filled moments have been influenced by my family and friends, my personal experiences , my interests and my personal belongings. I really hope that you enjoy viewing my paintings as much as I have enjoyed painting them…”
