FOREWORD

What exactly do we mean when we say “The Arts”? It seems like a simple question, with a simple answer… The beautiful picture you walk past in the local hotel that catches your eye, that thought invoking poem that you read in school years ago, that song on the radio that sticks in your head all day. Yes, these are all examples, but the truth is, Art can go so much deeper.

The unexpected smell of a home-cooked dish that suddenly brings you back to the kitchen table of your childhood… A sad ballad that reminds you of a time when you had your heart broken… A painting that reminds you of a dream you had once… Art happens to us every day, in all kinds of ways. It belongs to all of us, and we all experience it in different ways.

Whether we know it or not, we all create everyday, in our thoughts, in our actions, even in our words, and so we all contribute to the Art of the world. How we see Art is not always as intended by the creator. Degas said that “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see”. Ask yourself the question, what is it that you see? What do you hear? More importantly, what do you Feel?

Next year, Íontas celebrates 20 years in Castleblayney, spreading creativity, community spirit, and “Wonder”, as its name suggests, and I think more than ever we need to look at the important place that the Arts hold in our lives. The last 12 months has been the busiest time this Arts centre has ever seen since it opened in 2005, and we are so proud to be able to say that our community, both local and further afield, has supported us through good times and bad, and we have been able to bring a more and more vibrant and varied programme of shows, workshops, activities, Festivals and events year on year.

We have had a record number of young people on our stage, with over 20 schools and youth groups choosing Íontas to showcase their amazing talents, as well as an incredible interaction with local schools through our Fighting Words creative writing programme, which continues to grow every day. We are nothing without the support we receive from patrons, visitors, parents, artists, and of course Pobal, Creative Ireland and the amazing Arts team in Monaghan County Council. Thanks to you all, we are proud to be one of the biggest and busiest Arts centres, not only in the border region, but in the whole country.

This coming season, why not explore your creativity a bit further? Come and delve into one of the many art exhibitions, enjoy the emotional roller-coaster of taking in a play, or come and sing along to one of our many musical acts. And maybe it will inspire you to be a little more creative yourself at home. Take up a paint brush and have fun! Blow the dust off that old guitar, maybe even write your thoughts down on a page, you never know, it could turn into a poem, even a novel! But the important thing is that a little bit of yourself comes out.

Art isn’t about the destination, it’s about the journey… And your journey starts with you. All we can do is inspire, encourage, and nourish everyone who steps inside our doors, but the rest is up to you. And wherever your journey takes you, to be able to say we had a part in that, however small, is the greatest honour we can hope for.

That is what Íontas is all about.

BLAYNEY FILMS @ ÍONTAS PRESENTS PERFECT DAYS

Date: Wednesday 11th Time: 7.30pm

Tickets: €7 Season Tickets: €25

Hirayama is a quiet, reserved, self-sufficient man living his simple life in Tokyo, his daily routine measured out by the duties of his job as cleaner of the city’s new, architecturally striking public toilets. His days begin with the swishing sound of a neighbour’s brush sweeping the ground, and unfold out thereafter into the human encounters and small sensations of his well-ordered life.

Hirayama reads his books, listens to music on his old-fashioned cassettes, takes photos with his instant camera and immerses himself in the pleasures of the city’s nature. But even this solitary life has its irritations, such as the foolishness of his young work colleague, or the more troubling disturbance caused by the reawakening of an old family wound. Director Wim Wenders (Paris, Texas; Wings of Desire) has produced a slow, gentle film, reminding us that a contented and meaningful life can be led simply by knowing what matters.

BLAYNEY FILMS @ ÍONTAS PRESENTS THE ZONE OF INTEREST

Date: Wednesday 16th

Time: 7.30pm

Tickets: €7 Season Tickets: €25

One of the most controversial and burdensome films of the past few years, The Zone of Interest tackles the incomprehensible subject of the Holocaust. How could the European country with the greatest philosophical tradition and cultural heritage of the Western world produce the evils of Nazism? Jonathan Glazer’s film cannot answer such a vast question, but in setting his film exclusively within the family home of the Nazi commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp – a beautiful home and gardens divided only by a wall from the extermination camp – we at least are made to reflect on how ordinary Germans were perfectly able to accept the monstrous lies of Nazism while being fully aware of the brutality being inflicted on Jews and other despised groups. This is a film, then, about the perpetrators of Nazi crimes, and not about the victims. The Zone of Interest is powerful by virtue of showing no scenes of concentration-camp horror of any kind – the horror lies in the utterly normal life led by camp commandant Rudolf Höss and his family.

105mins (2023) PG - German/Polish w/subtitles

ART EXHIBITIONS

“TWO

CORMAC DENNIS

COUNTIES… ONE VISION”

An Artistic Exploration

Exhibitions runs from August 1st to September 10th.

Launch Night Friday 2nd August at 7.30pm - Everyone welcome!

Born in Rush, County Dublin, Cormac Dennis is a renowned master pastelist and charcoal tonal artist. With a distinctive talent for capturing the essence of landscapes and seascapes in both plein air and studio settings, while also winning many awards along the way.

“My artistic journey has taken me to many interesting places. Paris, renowned for its history, culture and iconic landmarks, has long been a very regular “home from home“, and provides me with constant inspiration at the easel. Entranced by the beauty of its architecture and the restless energy that vibrates through such a multicultural city, I have sought to capture my experiences mostly through urban plein air street sketches.

In recent years I’ve had the chance to spend quite a bit of time in County Monaghan, enjoying the rolling hills and stunning lakes that provide equally endless inspiration for many artists. Through oil paintings, plein air sketches, charcoal, conte, and pastel works, I try to capture the essence and contrasts of these regions, whilst not neglecting my native Fingal - from the serene seascapes and flatlands that I call home to the drumlins around Castleblayney, and the magnificence of the city of light. My Art Life continues to be endlessly rewarding.

I am grateful for the opportunity to exhibit at the inspirational Íontas Cultural Centre, a venue that has hosted many incredibly talented artists and is deeply rooted in the community. MARGARET MCKENNA SCÉALTA MO SHINSIR

STORIES OF MY ANCESTORS

Exhibitions runs from September 12th to November 5th

Margaret McKenna is a visual artist based for over 20 years in County Cavan. Although born in Dublin, she has always been very aware of her County Monaghan roots. Her art is hugely influenced by the landscape in which she lives, and the stories held within, stories that blend mythology with geological features or tales of an ancient culture and folklore. Her love of our native language, to which she returned to learning during Covid, has only added to a deeper understanding of the wealth of meanings behind our place names, once translated back to their original Irish form. This became the inspiration behind her solo exhibition in Cavan County Museum in October 2023 titled “Ag siúl trí Fínscéalta || Walking through legends”, in which she explored the link between place names and mythology.

Margaret is delighted to be exhibiting in Íontas, delving once more into this connection between the story and the place name.

This journey, through ancestral lands, exploring tales and mythology associated with this undulating land of drumlins and lakes, has become a deeply personal experience. Interpreting these ideas into a visual format has been a wonderful challenge, combining the beauty of the Monaghan landscape with elements of stories told by the fireside by many a generation past.

This exhibtion will launch on Thursday September 12th at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome!

OPENDOOR GALLERY ARTISTS A MOMENT IN TIME

Exhibitions runs from 6th Nov 2024 to 14th Jan 2025

Launch Night: Thurs 14th November 2024 @ 7.30pm Everyone Welcome

“A Moment In Time” is an exhibition about observation and how we perceive the world around us at any given moment.

The Open door gallery artists were formed over 10 years ago by a group of artists who live around the Monaghan and Cavan region, and come together to paint on a regular basis. Their style of painting is varied, but they find inspiration and guidance in working together.

We here in Íontas are very proud to be hosting this group for an Exhibition, and we look forward to welcoming back Kate Beagan, who exhibited here in 2019, and will also be curating this wonderful collection by such a talented group of artists.

WORKSHOPS

Founded in 2009 by Roddy Doyle & Seán Love, Fighting Words celebrates the Creativity of children & young people, by providing free programming to both schools & individuals, as a way to explore creative writing, and the power of their own imaginations.

Since Fighting Words Monaghan was established here in Íontas, we have reached out to dozens of primary & secondary schools all over county Monaghan as well as it’s surrounding counties, both North & South of the Border, as well as Learning networks, youth reach programs, Scout groups and many more besides.

Our Aim is to increase the number of young writers, and we are always looking for new schools & groups to work with, and as Fighting Words is Completely Free, it has made creative writing even more accessible to anyone who wants to engage. It is all made possible by our team of volunteer mentors, who are vetted and trained by Fighting Words, and who lead and participate in workshops and creative writing sessions.

We can run workshops here in Íontas, in any one of our Monaghan County Libraries, who have partnered with us to increase accessibility all over the County, or our mentors can travel to your school or location to deliver these incredible experiences. If you are a school or organization who wishes to have us come and do a workshop with you, or if you are an individual who would like to get involved as a volunteer mentor, please get in touch.

We offer Creative writing in any form; short stories, novellas, poetry, screenwriting, comic book, diaries, magazines, fiction & non-fiction, songwriting, journalling & much much more! The limit really is your own imagination!
