This time twenty years ago, construction was still underway in a cold, wet field atop Conabury hill. Plans were drawn, bricks were laid, and a huge effort from hundreds around the community of Castleblayney came together, to lay the foundations of what would one day become Íontas Arts & Community Centre. From the moment that sod was turned in June 2003, a new story began here, and we are delighted that, two action packed decades later, those chapters continue to be written every day, by the continuous flow of visitors, colleagues and friends into our bustling centre of community & creativity.
As we welcome in an exciting and prosperous 2025, we must look back at the amazing things that Íontas has seen year on year since its birth. We’ve seen young local musicians go from messing around in our backstage rooms to huge elaborate gigs, and all the stages between. We’ve seen comedians go from our stage to the bright lights of Dublin, London and beyond, as well as young artists painting, writing, composing, who now share that same work on the global stage. Entire groups forming and flourishing, spanning several generations, whether Singing, Drama, Art, Youth, Sport or Community groups. Our family here has grown and grown, and with each and every moment, so have our footsteps on the pages of our history.
It’s fair to say that this time has been good to us, and given us the opportunity to support all of these people, these individuals with paths of their own, as well as all those who still continue to be a part of Íontas, and of course, all those who are yet to come through our doors in the many decades moving forward. We have been lucky to have had that time, and to still have it, and how we choose to spend our time is most important. We are delighted that so many of you choose to spend these precious moments here in Íontas, with friends, family, new acquaintances, and choose us as your local hub for the creativity and entertainment we strive to deliver.
The coming year will undoubtedly bring with it yet another explosion of Art, Music, Drama, Comedy and Film, with many of our usual returning friends gracing our stage, as well as a whole host of newcomers. We have a colourful collage of our favourite country stars, as well as some mega music legends like The Fureys, Foster & Allen, and Brian Kennedy. We have a massive lineup of comedians, both new and returning, as well as a number of Comedic Dramas, like Seamus O’Rourke, Wine O’Clock, and the nostalgic “Give My Head Peace”. Balanced of course with local Drama, through our Annual Festival, and a special performance of “Big Maggie” in support of our friend Leanne Matthews.
Apart from our musicals, like our Panto Aladdin, and Calendar Girls, we have some amazing alternative music, with the world renowned Viennese Strauss Gala, the incredible groups Whistling Donkeys & Onóir, as well as a variety of your favourite tribute acts too. We have a whole host of exhibitions lined up, as well as a great selection of films, and most importantly, amazing kid’s shows! Like Ray Bubbles, Story-time, Jack & the Beanstalk, and a special gig for kids… Kyle and his “Little Folk on the Road”. It’s certainly going to be an action packed year… our 20th year that is!
And as always, we are so grateful to the support from the Arts Team at Monaghan County Council, from Creative Ireland, Pobal, and all the other organizations, partners and patrons who have supported us all this time, and continue to do so as we flourish onwards. Depending on how you look at it, twenty years can either be a very short time, or indeed a very long time. For many of us, it may seem like yesterday that Íontas opened its doors, and to others, a lifetime ago… But remember, it’s not about how much time we have, it’s how we spend it. These years with you have truly been a blessing to us, and we know that the many years to come will be no different.
Let’s embrace them together…

FRENCH 121mins (2023) 15A | Director: Matteo Garrone
Two teenage cousins in Senegal are motivated less by poverty than innocent ambition to leave their country and reach Europe, where, their smartphones tell them, a new life will open up for them. But this is a journey that entails an odyssey across land and sea. Io Capitano could have ended up as a relentlessly grim account of the migrant-journey horrors we have become so used to, but the film does not let itself become a documentary-style fiction. Instead, it achieves something greater by managing to show both the terrors and exploitation the adolescents undergo but also the resources of the human spirit and the unbreakable bonds of loyalty and friendship. The journey narrative is interspersed with brief moments of dream, myth and fantasy, and these too allow the film to transcend its difficult subject matter and to present us ultimately with an uplifting experience – as well as giving African migrants a human face that many Europeans would prefer not to see.

TURKISH 106mins (2024) 15A | Director: Levan Akin
A promise made to her dying sister leads a retired Georgian teacher, Lia, to travel to Istanbul to seek out her sister’s estranged trans daughter. Arrived in Istanbul, Lia discovers the truth that, as a character says in the film, Istanbul is a city to which people go when they want to disappear. In Crossing, as often in quest-style narratives, it’s the personal encounters experienced in the quest that matter most. Slowly and subtly we see how, through these human contacts, Lia’s stern certainties are shaken, and that Achi, the young man who tagged along with her promising inside knowledge, is more than the opportunist that Lia takes him to be. In a non-didactic manner, the film lets us see the affecting and necessary solidarity within the Istanbul trans community in an often-hostile wider society, and reminds us that human identity and self-expression will take many forms. As one critic rightly put it, “Crossing is an emotionally rich [and] deeply humane film”. It also provides us with an immersive view of the teeming streets of non-tourist Istanbul and – of its legendary free-roaming cat population!
A Viennese Strauss Gala but now a new production of this ever popular show. Recreating the romance of the Viennese Festive season, reminding you of a bygone age of glamorous soirees and Strauss waltzes. The Show features highlights from some of the great Operettas of the Strauss family, Kalman and Lehar; including Die Fledermaus, The Merry Widow and many more.
The European Orchestral Ensemble will accompany four Soloists from major Opera companies; including Maria Kesselman and Mandy Watsham stars of Phantom of the Opera and BBC’S Friday Night is Music Night.
This wonderful production is cleverly staged and choreographed, and authentically costumed, and will appeal to the romantic as much as the music aficionado. It continues to be hugely popular all over the country.

ENGLISH 126mins (1975) CLUB | Director Michelangelo Antonioni
This season’s classic film is by the enormously influential Italian director, Michelangelo Antonioni. Unlike many of his films, The Passenger has something of a traditional plot, while still being concerned with familiar Antonioni themes such as alienation and lostness in the modern world. David Locke (played by Jack Nicholson) is a reporter gathering material in Africa for a documentary on a guerrilla movement. In typical Antonioni fashion, Locke is filmed as adrift in space, here the African desert, a metaphor for Locke’s own existential drift – he is frustrated with his life, his marriage is failing and he is losing interest in his job. Circumstances offer him the chance to abandon his identity and assume another. One may well disappear from one’s own life and from family and colleagues, but can one escape oneself, and one’s past? And whose identity exactly has Locke taken on? Antonioni follows these themes through as Locke finds he has not gained a freedom he may have thought to achieve, culminating in one of the most brilliantly filmed end-scenes in modern cinema by a master of cinematic imagery.

Six-year-old Cléo lives in Paris with her widower father, but is raised mostly by her Cape Verdean nanny, Gloria. The bond between child and nanny is deep, but is brought to an abrupt end with the death of Gloria’s mother in Cape Verde, obliging her to return home. Cléo’s only consolation is that she will be allowed to spend one last summer with Gloria in Cape Verde. However, being the unique object of Gloria’s attention in Paris is very different from having to share Gloria’s attentions with her family in Cape Verde. The film offers us Cléo’s point of view on her experience, showing the range of new emotions she is obliged to undergo as Gloria’s attentions are demanded elsewhere, both inside and outside her family. The racial dynamics, too, have changed, Cléo often being the only white face present. The subtlety with which this subject is handled is just one of the many successes of this warm and sharply observed film that, to its credit, does not sentimentalise the child’s experience, rendered in a truly extraordinary manner by Louise Mauroy-Panzini as Cléo.

BY EWELINA THOMPSON
15th January to 25th February 2025
Launch Evening Thursday 16th January 7.30pm
Ewelina Thompson moved to Ireland in 2006 from Lukow, Poland, where she was a self taught artist since childhood. Now a contemporary artist known for her vibrant colourful landscapes and multicultural portraits, Ewelina paints with acrylic paint on canvas, sometimes using goldleaf or real jewelry as embellishments to complement her outstanding artwork. Her style is bold and rich in colour, often with texture and a touch of impressionism, realism, and with a magical dreamy exposition. Her inspiration also comes from her interpretation of the world through the lens of her faith and beliefs.
Some of her paintings possess hidden meanings, and she considers multicultural diversity as outstanding beauty captured in a moment, trying to give “soul” to her paintings. Her stand on cultures that are often undervalued or forgotten, inspires her to create portraits rich in ethnic inclusivity. She has exhibited in numerous fairs and festivals across Monaghan and beyond, and donates much work to charity, including a Polish Charity for children in hospitals here in Ireland.
A busy mum of five, and with the support of her husband Christopher, Ewelina continues to passionately create every day, and push forward with determination to become more recognized and appreciated among Irish culture and to collaboratively admire cross-culturalism as a citizen of this World.

Last summer, a group of local Artists traveled to Caudete in Spain as part of the twinning celebrations between our two towns, and met up with local arts officers, as well as native spanish artist Antonio Roquena Solora, a highly acclaimed professional artist in watercolor, among other painting styles. Led by Cavan based professional artist Celia Richard, who also teaches art here in Íontas, they took part in various art workshops and received guided explorations of the area. Antonio, along with a number of Caudete’s Council and Arts officers, then visited us here in Castleblayney, where they visited Lough Muckno, various places and sites around the town, and our very own gallery here in Íontas.
Now, with support from Castleblayney and Caudete town councils, we are proud to host a multinational exhibition here in Íontas. This special showing will be comprised of artworks from various artists from both the Castleblayney and Caudete regions, and will mark the special and everlasting connection between our towns for years to come.
