WELCOME ABOARD Dear Traveler,

Cher Voyageur,

Welcome to the September-November edition of Inzozi magazine. As we get back to our respective work from the beautiful summer holidays, I would like to wish you well in all you do. I also take this opportunity to welcome you onboard our flight. Relax and enjoy our world class services.

As a fast growing airline on the African continent, RwandAir is planning to expand its horizons and open new opportunities for business and exploration. After the successful launch of the Cape Town and Abuja routes, our next destination will be Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia and will commence before the end of this year, with five weekly flights.

I’m very proud to share with you that in June this year, RwandAir’s IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certificate was renewed for the third time. This milestone positions RwandAir as a highly regarded airline in terms of Safe Passenger Operations. In line with improving our service delivery, RwandAir has partnered with the National Aviation Services (NAS) to provide premier lounge services at Kigali International Airport (KIA). This joint venture is part of many initiatives RwandAir is putting in place to upgrade its business class service across its value chain, from the moment you book your ticket until you reach your final destination. I can’t forget to mention that RwandAir was recently ranked among the Top Ten World’s Most Improved Airlines in 2018 by Skytrax. We are very proud of this accomplishment as we continue to strive for excellence. As always, please visit our website and book your next flight with us, look for special offers and join Dreammiles, our loyalty program to enjoy additional benefits. We will be glad to have you among our followers on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Don’t forget to tag us whenever you take a picture when flying with us. I wish you a pleasant journey and thank you for flying the dream of Africa.

FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | Welcome

HOW DO YOU TRAVEL? Mr. Rex A.G. Nijhof

What is your favourite destination? I don’t have a single favourite destination. I do enjoy traveling to the South of Germany where my daughter attends boarding school and wherever we can travel together. Most recently, we have been able to explore more parts of East Africa together, including Rwanda of course. In wintertime, we enjoy going to the Alps where we spend our days outside skiing in the fresh air.

WE'VE GOT MAIL

Dear RwandAir Team,

Dear RwandAir team,

I’m writing in regards to the cancelled flight from Dubai. I’m a frequent traveler from Harare, Zimbabwe and a trader too.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you guys for a safe travel to Dubai and back. My client (Aggie the dance queen) and I enjoyed the trip very much.

Despite the cancellation of your flight from Dubai, which we later learnt was a result of a technical issue and the delays that we encountered, I would also like to say thank you, for the way we were treated. My personal experience has left me very humbled in how you can turn a bad experience into something different. We were accommodated in a very good hotel and were provided with meals. On the second day, we couldn’t connect straight to Harare so we opted to stay behind. Being pregnant, I developed some discomfort and required medical attention and one gentleman who I came to learn heads your UAE team (Mr. Timothy) reacted very fast and within a very short time I was taken to the hospital. What amazed me the most is that this man later on in the evening came to see me and was very concerned. He took me to buy medicine and ensured that I checked out last, facilitated transport to the airport and also came to assist to check me and my friends in. He made sure t till last minute that I was well taken care of. For that reason, I felt and still feel very humbled. We had stressed him so much, he had not slept at all for hours but at no time did he loose his cool, and acted very professional especially with everyone asking lots of questions.

God bless

I truly appreciate Timothy, his patience, professionalism and his calmness during this entire time. I’m very happy, headed home and for sure I will continue flying RwandAir. I’ve actually spoken to a group we have to see if we can all be flying RwandAir.

May God bless RwandAir, may Timothy be blessed, and this is truly memorable for me.

Regards

Oscar Mwalo

Dear RwandAir, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the quality customer service provided by Peter Kamuti. He contacted me on July 28th, 2018 regarding my lost luggage. I was initially on a flight to Seychelles in December 2017 through a different airline, when upon my arrival I noticed that my bag did not arrive. I worked with the airline for months to try to locate it, but alas there was no hope of its return. It was amazing to receive the call from Peter that Saturday morning to notify me that the bag was found in Uganda by RwandAir. Peter promptly had the bag sent to Malawi and it arrived in 3 days. He worked with me despite my anxiety about the situation. He was incredibly patient and understanding. I am ecstatic to have had the bag returned fully intact. Please share my praises with Mr. Kamuti and his supervisors!

All the best, Deborah M. Rodríguez García, MA Africa Education Programme Coordinator

24 hours in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa is the capital city of Ethiopia, the oldest independent country in Africa. This vibrant and fascinating city offers many cultural landmarks, culinary delights, world class coffee and exciting music experiences. Due to its high altitude location, the climate in Addis Ababa is mild but walking or climbing up steps can be a strain so take it easy and enjoy this city at leisure.

By Ilse Lasschuijt What could be more romantic than drifting gracefully over the outskirts of Addis Ababa, moving where the wind will take you, and seeing the sun rise while watching the hills surrounding the city, baboons running in the green forests and villagers tending to their cattle or crops? You will have to get up early to experience the sunrise balloon flights offered by Abyssinia Ballooning but it is worth the lack of sleep. The birthplace of coffee After such a magnificent start with breakfast and champagne, it is time for a real coffee. Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee so coffee lovers are in for a treat. Small traditional coffee places can be found on every street corner and inside restaurants, hotels and shopping malls. Coffee beans are roasted by hand over charcoal, grounded using a mortar and pestle and brewed in a traditional clay coffee pot known as a jebena. The coffee is served in a small cup. It is dense but not too bitter and has a wonderfully mild aroma. One of the most famous coffee place and the first commercial roaster in the country is Tomoca, a small establishment near the lively Piazza area. You can also buy beans from them to extend the experience at home. After the coffee, take a car up to Mount Entoto for another dramatic view of the expanding city. The drive involves a steep climb to over 3000 metres passing hills with many eucalyptus trees, which offer firewood for the villagers. On top of the hill, lies Saint Mary’s (Maryam) Church where Menelik II was crowned emperor of Ethiopia in 1889. He relocated the capital city of the country to Addis Ababa, which means “New Flower”. The church also offers a small museum.

Haile Selassi Once back in the city, take a moment to visit the Holy Trinity cathedral, the most sacred Orthodox church in the capital. The church was built in the 1940s by emperor Haile Selassie I and has beautiful glass stained windows. The main altar is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, the two side altars to Saint John the Baptist and Our Lady of mercy. Ceiling paintings show Emperor Haile Selassie holding his speech in the League of Nations during the battle against the Italians. The tombs of emperor Haile Selassie I and his wife can be viewed in one of the back rooms. Around the church is a cemetery where many important historical figures are buried.

Below and above right: The Holy Trinity cathedral.

Hungry? At the heart of every Ethiopian meal is injera, a spongy pancake made from tef, a sour-wheat-like grain. It is used to sop up the vegetables, spicy curries and meat stews or wot that are ladled on top. On a communal plate, you eat injera with your right hand. There are plenty of family-style places to have a tasty injera for lunch, including many vegetarian options. A popular restaurant is Kategna, just off Bole Road.

Ancient Lucy With bellies filled to satisfaction, it is time to visit the National Museum. Its highlight is undoubtedly 3.2 million year old “Lucy”, the skeletal remains of an Australopithecine hominid that was discovered in eastern Ethiopia in 1974. Lucy walked upright and it is fascinating to see not only the real bones but also a skilful reconstruction of the complete skeleton. The museum offers an excellent exhibition which serves as a reminder of the rich archaeological, paleontological and cultural history of Ethiopia. If you are ready to shop, you can start at one of the largest open air markets of Africa, Merkato, where you can buy anything from textiles to food and car parts. If the sheer size of this market seems overwhelming there are many smaller markets such as Shola market for everyday Ethiopian goods or Shiromeda market, for Ethiopian traditional clothes, scarfs and local crafts.

Dr NKUSI AGABE Emmy MD ,MMED,Deputy Chief Executive Officer at Oshen- King Faisal Hospital

The mere mention of neurosurgery leads most to think of referral abroad to distant hospitals which comes at expensive costs. This is often because that has been the case for decades and most Africans did not know better. However, a facility in Kigali, King Faisal Hospital has been working to change the reputation of the region in regards to neurosurgery. The impacts are increasingly visible. For one to well understand the approach, history and qualification of King Faisal Hospital in neurosurgery, it’s probably as important to understand the people behind the process and progress. Dr. Emmy Agabe Nkusi is one of the key people behind the advancements of neurosurgery in Rwanda. His resume, qualifications and responsibilities are a long read. He is a chief consultant neurosurgeon, Medical Director and Deputy CEO at Oshen- King Faisal Hospital. He is also an Associate Professor and Programme Director of Neurosurgery Training Programme at the University of Rwanda. After training in the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa Dr. Nkusi returned to Rwanda at a time when expertise in the field was not much. Beginning 2009, Dr. Nkusi and other professionals in the sector came together to have concerted efforts in neurosurgery. The synergy saw the formation of Rwanda Neurosurgical Centre in 2010 which was based at King Faisal Hospital. Among the major goals of the Centre was to train, build and share knowledge among personnel across levels in the field. Aware of the urgent need of Neurosurgery services, Dr. Nkusi and his team 24

HOW KING FAISAL HOSPITAL BUILT A REPUTABLE NEUROSURGERY CENTRE By Collins Mwai implemented priority areas including acquiring necessary equipment with facilitation by the Rwandan Government. By 2013, the Rwanda Neurosurgery training programme was in place. “We also ensured that the surgeons are qualified and certified to work beyond the country” he adds. Courtesy of the efforts, Oshen-King Faisal Hospital can now handle most if not all neurosurgery related cases including neurovascular complex brain tumours and Spine related ailments, among others. Due to the efforts, Rwanda has reduced the need for patients to fly out seeking neurosurgery related facilitation. The development has put Kigali on the map as a destination for neurosurgery services from across the region. “We previously had to send out a large number of patients. Now we are able to handle patients from Rwanda and from within the region with ease,” Dr. Nkusi says. To improve medical tourism facilities, Oshen Healthcare has made necessary adjustments in King Faisal Hospital including removing the requirements for prior registration for foreigners. The neurosurgery department is complemented by other services such as physiotherapy, intensive care unit, internal medicine, pediatrics, advanced imaging services, laboratory and nursing among others. With over 20 destinations across Africa, RwandAir has also improved access for patients from across the region.

Daughter of Africa: Louise Mushikiwabo If you search the name Louise in one of the popular search engines, the surname Mushikiwabo will be among the first auto-complete suggestions in seconds. The results page will load withher biography, op-ed articles, interviews, and countless news articles. Louise Mushikiwabo no longer needs to be introduced, except maybe to highlight some aspects of her personality unknown to the public which might help shed light on the reasons why she is a true states woman. Back in early September 2011, I had the honour of meeting Louise Mushikiwabo. It was during Rwanda Day in France, which I had attended as part of the media team. The one of a kind gathering had brought together the diaspora from the four corners of the world, along with friends of the land of the thousand hills in an encounter with the Rwandan Head of State and government officials.

Louise Mushikiwabo mesura

that she has a knack for discussing serious business with the greatest of ease. This is her most prominent feature, her sense of humanity. Her empathy is such that any encounter with her turns into quality time. This, even when she is just about to hop on another long-haul flight to attend yet another meeting and fatigue is visibly displayed on all the faces around her. She is always sporting an impeccable hairstyle, she walks straight with a smile on her face and greets everyone with genuine warmth, as if everything was well in the world. God knows that the world has seen better days, but true experienced diplomats rarely allow themselves to be affected by this when they must deal with one negotiation after the other, with tact, poise, and acumen. To say that Louise Mushikiwabo is one of them is stating the obvious, particularly knowing the rough battles she’s had to overcome. Second feature: her resilience. No one can claim to know the obstacles she has surmounted better than her. Hailing from the city of Kigali, the youngest of nine children, she never envisioned such a brilliant international political career. Once an English teacher and the sister of the head of the former opposition party Landoald Ndasingwa, she escaped the worst of fates because of an earlier decision to leave her motherland for the United States. She was undergoing training as an interpreter there in 1994, when her brother, his wife and their two children became victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi. In what was a very dark hour, Louise Mushikiwabo understood the consequences of her country being abandoned by the international community. Faced with such tragedy, she felt powerless. In 2005, a book was released under her name; a sort of therapeutic undertaking to help her overcome the trauma while bidding farewell to her own, in dignity. Going home to Rwanda and participating in rebuilding the country and its tarnished reputation arguably became part of her healing process. She had barely set foot on the ground when she left for Tunis where she was put in charge of the communication department of the African Development Bank, then headed by Donald Kaberuka, Rwanda’s former Minister of Finance and Economic Planning. Third feature: her work ethic. A few months later, she was back in Kigali where she was appointed Minister of Information. She started working on the era of digitization as its prominence was growing on the continent, before SEPTEMBER-NOVEMBER 2018 | 27

moving on to heading the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in 2009, which already fit her like a glove, even if she hadn’t proven herself yet. An official who really appreciates her, recently confided that in those early days he had “faith in her, and she will soon surprise many people.”

Fourth feature: her inborn gift for communication. She has a fine perception of things and is capable of smoothing things over, which makes her one of the best assets of the successive governments, who never saw fit to move her from her position in almost a decade. Then, seemingly out of the blue and to everyone’s surprise, the Rwandan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and East African Community is announced as candidate for the position of Secretary General of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie. This news was backed up by the public endorsement of presidents Paul Kagame and Emmanuel Macron during a joint press conference in Paris. Her prowess is now acknowledged far beyond the borders of the African continent where she enjoys almost unanimous support. The announcement of her candidacy was highly unexpected, given the nature of the relationship between the two countries. The fact that English took on a new leading role in Rwanda, which did not demote the status of

French as one of the official languages - along with the unfortunate diplomatic rows, seemed to have created a distance for a while between the Land of the Thousand Hills and the Hexagon. Fifth feature: her fighter spirit, coupled with humility. The recent development since the surprising announcement had many people talking. Louise Mushikiwabo kept her usual smile when she stated during an interview with Jeune Afrique that, “the Organisation is one of the lobbying groups between countries, where international political stakes are discussed”. She knew that her move for office on the international stage would not be understood by the public, but she had in fact calculated her decision extremely well. Louise Mushikiwabo never puts the cart before the horse, which is why she is not rushing to celebrate what seems to be an almost certain victory. She knows that nothing is settled yet, despite all signs being positive. The last round will be played in Erevan, Armenia, in October. In the meantime, Rwanda, the African Union and her campaign are keeping her very busy, as she spends almost as much time in the air as on the ground. And she maintains that lasting smile on her face, the smile of an African daughter. Above: Kibuye/Rwanda - 08/26/2016: Teacher and pupils at mathematics lesson in a classroom in a school in Africa. a melting pot of African students By | Par: Davy Ingabire

Education is the key to a good future and a valuable degree can often open many doors, or at least increase one’s chances of a head start to an attractive career path. There was a time when African parents had little choice but to send their children to Western schools so that they could be among those who attended the most respected universities in the world and in turn gain access to better opportunities. Luckily, today, the trend is reversing, and a growing number of prestigious universities are making their home on the African continent. In Rwanda for example, Carnegie Mellon University and Oklahoma Christian University have opened campuses in the capital city Kigali, where they offer master’s level programs. Though they are not the most accessible financially speaking, students who enrol in their programs eventually graduate with an American degree without ever leaving the comfort of their homeland. Some of the universities offer scholarships to the most deserving students, such as Kepler University, which has been based in Rwanda for a few years, and the Pan African institution African Leadership University (ALU), which recently opened a branch in the heart of Kigali.

Beyond their education, these young students come from all over Africa to not only warm up to the culture of Rwanda, their host country, but also to learn about the various cultures represented by the diverse student body at their respective universities. “Up to now, my stay in Rwanda has been great, I am in love with the country’s culture. For example, I love participating in umuganda (the monthly community work session) and trying to speak the national language by saying mwaramutse (good morning) to the people I meet”, said Gloria Rukomeza, 25, a Communication Management student at Kepler, originally from the DRC.

Her classmate Fiona appreciates the opportunity to connect with the many students from the region. Victorien, the student from Cameroon, studying Computer Science at ALU has opted for another way to get acquainted with the country’s culture.

“I attend a local church service at Christian Life Assembly (CLA), and I am involved in its activities. It is a community that is mainly made up of Rwandans and as opposed to my university, it allows me to become more integrated within the society.” Reflecting on their experience in Rwanda so far, the three international students, Victorien, Fiona and Gloria, drew comparison between the Rwandan people and their own countrymen, stating the former is much calmer. Though they sorely miss the food from their motherlands, they are also full of praise for the city that has embraced their presence. Fiona is especially fond of the security Kigali offers, as Gloria echoes her feelings,

Sambaza look like tiny sardines but they are caught in the fresh waters of Lake Kivu, the lake which marks the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo and lies at the foot of the Virunga volcano chain. At the end of each day, just before sunset, fishermen along the Lake Kivu shores leave their villages and set out on their boats onto the lake to catch sambaza. They maneuver their triplehulled wooden boats with poles, as they paddle onto the vast dark lake. It is not without danger. The waters of Lake Kivu hold methane and carbon dioxide. An earthquake or storm could potentially release the gas and make the lake pop like a bottle of champagne. But as long as the sambaza are able to survive the gas, the fishermen will continue to fish. The fishermen cast their nets and use lamps and torches to attract the fish. They stay on the lake throughout the night and return in the morning, when

Les secrets des Sambaza

Secrets Would you eat a whole fish, head, bones tails and all? Lots of people from many cultures do and it is often considered a delicacy. Usually the fish are small and of the saltywater variety, which are easy to dry, deep fry or simmer: anchovies, smelt, whiting or baby sardines. But Rwanda has other fish to fry: the delicious and delicate sambaza. By | Par Ilse Lasschuijt

the women set out to the markets to sell the fish, dried or fresh.

Secret ingredient

Sambaza Recipe Use only fresh sambaza from the market. Rinse and pat dry and sprinkle with lemon juice. Dust the tiny fish in a mixture of wheat flour, salt (and the secret ingredient) and pan-fry. Serve hot on a large sharing plate, with wedges of lemon and tartar sauce.

Although fish consumption in Rwanda is relatively low compared to other countries, most Rwandans, especially in the Lake Kivu area, grew up with the taste of sambaza. Children love sambaza, and together with potato fries they make a mouth-watering Rwandan happy meal. Of the many excellent restaurants in Kigali that offer sambaza on their menu, Repub Lounge, an upscale, trendy African restaurant in Kimihurura is the best known. According to the manager Solange Katarebe, sambaza are without

The tiny fish are delivered fresh every morning to the restaurant and when asked about the recipe, Solange hesitates as Chef Gerard is very protective of what he calls his secret ingredient. But she is willing to share the general recipe without the little touch that make sambaza at Repub Lounge so special. “People will just have to come to the restaurant to figure it out”, she laughs. “It seems like such a simple recipe, but the trick is to keep the fish crisp and not soggy. Taking Memories, Leaving Footprints. At the beginning of 2018, we encouraged you to indulge your wanderlust. How are you fairing? How far? In this edition, leading up to the World Tourism Day on September 26th, we catch up with Judith Mbogo, an urban explorer, art and architecture lover, thrill seeker and foodie. By | Par: Trezer Oguda Thailand, Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria, Dubai, Uganda, Tanzania, Qatar, Ethiopia, South Africa and counting... Judith Mbogo’s eyes light up with both nostalgia and anticipation at the mention of anything travel. It is quite evident that she is looking forward to her next adventure as she savors the memories of gone days. The allure of experiencing a totally different culture that allows her to sample foods, music, architecture and other tourist attractions often over powers her out of her comfort zone. It wasn’t always like this. She, like many others, was always concerned about the cost implications and fear of stepping out into the unknown. She however got over the latter when memories of her childhood reminded her of how much fun she had traveling with her family across Kenya over the holidays. She particularly enjoyed the road trips to her father’s work-based recreational facilities and how much peace she felt interacting with nature. Today, several years later, she is proud to have visited twelve countries. Ever fulfilling were these trips, that it is hard for her to pick a favorite destination. “Every country offered me remarkable and unforgettable experiences. Thailand was adrenaline filled, from hugging tigers and riding elephants to the scrumptious street food. Morocco’s architecture

was mesmerizing. Visiting the pyramids in Egypt and taking a cruise ship across the Nile had me crossing things off my bucket list.” The hospitality of locals across the board was refreshing. Judith is constantly pleasantly surprised by the tantalizing flavors the local cuisines of the different destinations have to offer. “I love trying out new things, especially local foods. It may sound gross, but I had buffalo testicles in Morocco. It was awesome! Very sweet!” Judith does not consider herself a travel expert - yet, but she does not mind sharing some tips on what has worked for her so far.

Stop comparing, just start. In this age of social media, it is easy to become a non-starter when you compare yourself with others.

SEPTEMBER-NOVEMBER 2018 |

Judith feels blessed to have covered twelve countries so far and is looking forward to three more before the end of 2018. She uses the more experienced travelers as inspiration. So just start, even if it is within your country, it will grow with time. Then take it one country a time.

Travel is affordable. Granted. Those Instagram photos make it look like people are spending thousands of dollars on satisfying their wanderlust cravings. This might be true in some cases, but a lot of times, travelers devise ways of lightening the costs.

“A common misconception is that I have someone sponsoring my trips. The truth is, I am my own sponsor. You must be very intentional about putting money aside for travel. That means making sacrifices here and there. I have no regrets though. The experiences are totally worth it.”

Judith also advocates for group travel. The more the better. Traveling as a group often attracts cheaper accommodation and package deals.

“Always try to travel during off peak seasons. Flights are cheaper, and sites are less crowded. Proprietors may be looking to fill up accommodation spots, so discounts are inevitable.” Make use of friends and family networks in different cities. They might be willing to accommodate you at little or no cost.

Plan your own trips. “Tour companies always have a strict schedule of activities around your trip. This can be good because it offers you some

Planifiez vos propres voyages.

I prefer planning my own trips, so I can be a little bit spontaneous with my exploits.”

Expect the unexpected. “Don’t expect everything to go your way, however much you had everything planned out. Your reaction to the unexpected will always determine the tangent your trip takes.” Judith recalls an incident in Morocco where a last-minute decision to spend an extra night in Marrakesh cost her both money and time. It was truly frustrating when she realized she would miss her direct flight to Nairobi. The language barrier did not help either. She had to spend an additional four days in Casablanca waiting for the next available flight to Nairobi. It was her first solo travel experience and it was almost depressing to be alone and helpless away from home. Fortunately, she made acquaintances with a local who worked at the airport and ultimately got her to try the buffalo testicles delicacy. However much she prefers traveling in a group, Judith says that it is easier to make new friends and network fluidly when traveling solo as one is not pre-occupied with trying to meet everyone’s needs. Her constantly expanding worldview has her appreciating the different values across the globe and loving her uniqueness even more. “I have learnt to embrace my own culture and wear it ever so proudly. I am always keen to tell someone about my country Kenya and teach them a little Kiswahili here and there.” Inspired? Challenged? You can follow her adventures on Instagram @judithmbogo

REFRAMING AN ERA OF

DIGITAL CHILDHOOD The extent to which children are influenced by digital technology has both positive and negative implications. A lot has been said by experts about the addictive nature of screen time. Yet, the tired and unengaged parent seeking a moment’s peace of mind, will apply the ‘digital-pacifier’ as a diversion to the attention demands of their children. By Gloria Iribagiza

Rather than leave all to chance, that somehow, a child will not get severely addicted to the smartphone, adults need to regulate and place controls for the online safety and protection of their children. Research from the ‘Digital Childhood’ report addresses the various childhood development milestones in the digital environment. The UK-based 5Rights Foundation report states that, “children are often the early adopters of emerging services and technologies and therefore the first to spot its contradictions and challenges, yet they are rarely asked their opinion, and are very often the last to be heard.” Looking at digital technology from the child’s point of view, according to the report, can help place perspective on the backdrop of “opportunity, understanding, risk and misunderstanding, which is unusually absent of parental advice and regulatory protections.”

Teenagers are living off ‘likes’ and this has falsely shaped their perception”

The risks are real for both parents and children when it comes to online exposure to content containing violence and sexual material, bullying, fake news and inapt information. However, research shows that children simply consume a lot of content as long as it is in their reach—hence the need for regulation. Providing the online safety that children need while at the same time allowing them to experience the opportunities that the digital environment presents does not have to be a gamble. There are ways to harness digital technology to the benefit of your child so that they do not turn into gadget junkies and lose their childhoods to the virtual world of digital technology. The digital world is one that was created for those who have the mental agility to regulate and manage their time to discuss ideas in a free and forthright way. This ability is something that children have not yet fully developed. It is a freedom that children should not be left to navigate on their own terms. Digital technology boosts independent thinking and cognitive skills—all very important aspects of early childhood development. Still, parents should view this development as one that needs to be guided toward a safe learning sphere online. It is important to note that many phones that children use belong to adults who most of the time leave the internet on for children to access. The danger is that a child, when unsupervised, may stumble onto 64

C’est une liberté dont les enfants ne devraient pas profiter selon leurs propres conditions. and get exposed to inappropriate material that has nothing to do with their young lives. If a child must use the smartphone, help them access learning apps appropriate for their age group.

Social Media stress For teenagers, online content consumption is at a new high and has pushed their boundaries to new extremes unlike any other era. Social Media is their go to place for comfort as they grapple with the identity stresses of transitioning between childhood and young adulthood. Teenagers are living of ‘likes’ and this has falsely shaped their perception. When online, teenagers tend to feel that they fall short in their personal image as they compare themselves to others that inhabit the digital environment, according to the UK-based 5Rights Foundation report. The need to feel accepted is inevitable at this stage in life and therefore the impulsive use and sharing of photos or personal information online creates a virtual identity that seeks for immediate rewards while ignoring the long-term consequences that an online post might have. Irrespective of age, adults should be aware that apps or platforms are created and designed to deliberately extend their use. This means that regardless of anyone’s age, going online can be addictive. This makes it a huge risk to leave any child at the mercy of search engines and Social Media that forever suggest or auto play the next possible item based on a user’s search history. The catch is to let the children have safe and fun internet access while limiting their online experience.

Even though the first instinct for parents is to remove phones or digital gadgets from children as a way to control their use, research suggests that it is not the most effective strategy. The world has moved into the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the fact that ‘digital is the future’, it is imperative that the younger generation is groomed in that direction if they are to survive. The reality is that children who are digitally literate have better problem solving skills as they grow because they learn how to take more risks, think critically and experience less harm with their added knowledge and competencies. Attaining these skills in a child requires that there is a balance between regulated time and safety online. The issue of navigating the multifaceted challenge of a digital childhood is enormous but not impossible. Children at different age-groups have the ability to learn, grow and engage digitally in incredible ways when given the support they need from parents, teachers, caretakers and the technology regulatory bodies.

66

| INZOZI – RWANDAIR’S INFLIGHT MAGAZINE

Space inclusion: Opportunities for Africa’s development

The space industry presents several opportunities that can leverage and improve the socio-economic state of African countries. Satellites have been launched for decades into the galaxy and Africa is not an exception. By | Par: Gloria Iribagiza

The benefits of space inclusion for African nations are many. It would contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets, liaise data to subvert natural and weather disasters and function as a reliable data source for policy on agriculture, education and the private sector.

In March this year, the first satellite data transmission was tested in Rwanda. This sets the stage for the construction of a satellite station as well as small satellites (Cubesats) and is a result of a space inclusion agreement between the Rwandan Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA), Space Edge Lab and Laboratories of the University of Tokyo and Smart Africa.

According to Patrick Nyirishema, the Director General of RURA, the goal is to create avenues of training for Rwandan and African engineers to develop and expand their innovative capacities in spacecraft engineering and information and communication technology (ICT). With the Space Policy and regulatory instruments in place, more private developers would incorporate big data and data analytics to find solutions to some of Africa’s challenges.

Youth are key For space technology to become effective, it is important to build capacity among Africans to ensure the interventions will help to address the issues of the continent at realistic costs of implementation. As Africa moves toward a single digital market, space technology can increase access to the thousands of applications invented by Africans on a daily basis. Smart Africa’s Executive Director, Dr. Hamadoune Toure, believes that access is a key element to the digital economy and it should also be affordable. The Smart Africa Secretariat awards scholarships to African innovators to acquire space technology training in Japan. “Smart Africa is making sure that education is available for the youth so that they can meet the best objectives. When you synchronize the needs of education and the private sector, then the youth who graduate will be fit for the job market at the right time,” Toure says.

“We want to create opportunities—especially focus on entrepreneurship which creates more jobs. There are hundreds of thousands of applications that have never been created in Africa,” Toure adds: “An application is simply a local solution to a local problem. There are problems that are specific to Africa and once these are solved, they become international solutions.” It is through manufacturing locally, reducing the market size and sharing and inventing applications for Africa that the cost of access is lowered. The youth are key when it comes to the creation of a culture of information sharing, innovation and job creation in the ICT sectors— something that would spread to all other sectors.

Born a Crime

Trevor Noah’s memoir “Born a Crime” is a funny and insightful account of growing up in pre and post-Apartheid South Africa as a biracial boy and doubles as a paean to his mother, Patricia, whose significant presence in the book marks her undeniable influence over the comedian’s life. The memoir opens with a copy of the Immorality Act criminalising sexual relations between Europeans and natives, essentially showing Noah—a product of a Swiss/German father and Xhosa mother—was “born a crime”. Brief explainers offer glimpses into the inner workings of apartheid, spotlighting how the colonialists’ tactic of their divide and rule was designed to keep whites and non-whites apart. Not even South Africa’s indigenous tribes were spared from this insidious scheme, with Zulus and Xhosa—the country’s two largest groups— condemning each other’s approach to white rule. While Zulus had chosen to fight the invaders, Xhosas considered the enemy’s might and favoured negotiations. Both, however, would fail in their mission. “As the apartheid regime fell… instead of uniting for peace, they turned against each other, committing acts of unbelievable savagery,” Noah writes. “Massive riots broke out. Thousands of people were killed.” It’s in this context that Noah begins his story as a nine-year old being thrown out of a moving minibus by his mother following a verbal altercation with the Zulu driver. “That’s the problem with you Xhosa women,” the driver rages at the sight of a single woman with two children, including a mixed race one. “You’re all sluts, and tonight you’re going to learn your lesson.” When he refuses to stop the bus, Patricia hurls Trevor out before jumping out with his younger brother. Noah and his mother are left bruised and bleeding from the harrowing incident but the baby is unscathed. And after Patricia thanks God for saving them, Noah wisecracks that had she not insisted on attending church that Sunday, despite her car breaking down, they wouldn’t have encountered the driver. Noah’s antics take centre stage in his memoir, often resulting in hilarious consequences. In one instance, at the behest of unsuspecting family members, he offers a lenient prayer against the demon (himself) who had dumped faeces in the trashcan. In another chapter, he realises on prom night that his date doesn’t speak English or any of the other national languages he speaks, even though he’d visited her several times prior. “Tim had promised he’d get me a beautiful date for a dance, but he hadn’t made any promises about

any of her qualities,” he notes in hindsight. “I’d been mesmerised by her beauty… and didn’t know I was supposed to talk to her.”

Cecil Rhodes There’s also an infamous episode where, working as a DJ at a Jewish function, Noah hypes his dancer-friend with chants of Go Hitler. Looks of shock and disgust greet the pair before they are summarily booted out. But Noah wasn’t being obnoxious. Hitler was the dancer’s birth name. “If black South Africans could go back in time and kill one person, Cecil Rhodes would come up before Hitler,” writes the comedian, describing Cecil Rhodes as their own monster. He further explains the Bantu education that blacks received, which only prepared them for a life of servility, deprived them of a full understanding of world affairs and led some like his grandfather to think “a Hitler” was an “army tank.” Although Born a Crime affords large chunks of humour, sobering moments filter through Noah and his mother’s abusive relationship with his stepfather and in the many ways South African society conspires against women. Born a Crime is a page-turner that combines farcical anecdotes, history and personal observations in the right proportion, ensuring readers get the giggles while learning a thing or two about South Africa and its ugly apartheid past.

West African Dish of Jollof Rice with Fish and Boiled Egg

Did you know that jollof rice, the subject of a cuisine supremacy battle between Nigeria and Ghana, originates from The Republic of Senegal? The Wolof people, Senegal’s most predominant group, are credited for creating the dish that is today a delicacy across Africa. So, should we just settle the debate and say that Senegal has the best jollof rice? The Wolof people are found in Senegal, Gambia and Mauritania. In Senegal, they occupy the ‘Savanna zone’ in the country’s northwest, numbering about 3 million or 35% of the total population. The Wolof first entered Senegal from the north east around the 11th Century. The Wolof are characteristically a dark skinned, tall, proud and regal-looking people. They are very influential in Senegal’s political and social arena, owing to their highly developed sense of national identity.

Structure Traditionally the Wolof were divided into three classes: the freeborn (Guers), those born into slavery (Jam), and the artisans (Griot). The freeborn class ranged from high-ranking noblemen to common peasant farmers. The slave class was made up of the Wolof whose parents were slaves. They were born into slavery and continued to serve their parent’s masters. The artisans were considered a low class in Wolof society. This group included blacksmiths, leather workers, and musicians. Intermarriage among the three classes was a very rare occurrence. However much of this class distinction is disappearing among the Wolof. The former president of Senegal Abdou Diouf, for instance, was from the blacksmith class.

Rites of Passage The most observed rites of passage are naming ceremonies, circumcisions, and funerals. Interestingly, the mother’s lineage is said to be more influential and important than the father’s. The uterine lineage provides the flesh, character, intelligence and magic power, while the father’s lineage provides the bones, nerves, courage, and a less powerful form of magical power. Children are often named after model influential family members or friends. Boys are circumcised between the ages of seven and eight. On return from the bushes of manhood, a Selbe, big brother, educates them about Wolof heroes and legends. Upon completion of this rite, they are regarded as men by the community.

Cuisine Apart from jollof rice, the Wolof have a rich diet. The basic staple food is millet and rice. Their primary source of protein is fish and sometimes goat, sheep, or chicken. Some of the favourite ricebased dishes are ceebu jan (rice and fish), ceebu yapp (rice and meat). Mafe is another popular dish, consisting of peanut sauce, meat and sweet potatoes or cassava. Most of the sauces are made from peanuts, Senegal’s main cash crop. Bissap, something akin to cranberry juice, is their favourite local drink.

So good are they that, “According to a popular Wolof joke, when U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon, a Wolof tapped him on the shoulder and asked, “ Gorgui (sir), would you like to buy this product?”” Wolof are accomplished musicians and have pioneered modern forms of traditional griot music and modern griot “rap” performed in the Wolof language. People enjoy dancing to the vigorous beating of drums by griots. Internationally acclaimed musician, Youssou N’Dour is known to write, record and perform his songs in his native Wolof language as well as English and French. Ninety-nine percent of the Wolof people are Muslims. Back in 2005, I went to Turkey with a few friends and we toured all the major cities. Our presence often drew genuine interest from a lot of people. We even got VIP treatment and invites to exclusive events. Some people called us African footballers’ names, saying that it’s the first time they had been that close to black people. Some people stared hard, others burst out laughing pointing at us while tapping their kids to also have a look at these strange creatures. One lady would touch our hands with a finger and quickly recline it as one would do when touching fire. The city folks were more accommodating than rural folks, but there were still some negative elements. The most shocking incident was in Istanbul when we encountered a kid that was so convinced that my African friends and I were wearing masks because we were black. He insisted on us removing our ‘masks’. Our Turkish guide told off the kid, but we laughed off the whole experience. ~ S. B. I was attending college in Nairobi. I am originally from Taita Hills down at the Kenyan coast and was still getting used to the fast-paced Nairobi life. The guy that used to supply the college with vegetables and other produce told me he fancied me and asked me out on a date. I am quite chatty, so I guess it impressed him that I wasn’t as snobbish as other ladies he had encountered before me. On D-day, the guy came to pick me up in with his veggies pick-up truck. That wasn’t a problem, until he told me we had to make a quick stop at the open-air market. The guy proceeded to load the back of the truck with tomatoes and other vegetables, before handing me a pack of carrots to hold. I found myself munching on a carrot to prevent an avalanche of tears. Oh, just in case you are wondering, we eventually made it to our intended destination that same evening. Sigh! ~W. M.

In Tanga, Tanzania, I saw someone eating what looked like a tasty dish. I pointed to it and asked the waiter for the same. He confirmed that it was called mbuzi makange. I was super confident with my choice until someone from our squad whispered to me that makange is goat testicles. I believed him because he had travelled two days before me and had already been to the restaurant we were at. I immediately recalled the order only for the lady waiter to explain, amid laughter, that it was some sort of peppered goat meat. Needless to say, I am the joke of the group to date.

~S. S. It was my first tour of Europe and I was so excited to visit malls for an overdue shopping spree. Back home in Kenya, I was used to passing through security check before entering any mall. In supermarkets and major stores, one leaves their luggage at a designated spot and is given a small wooden or plastic chip that identifies you as the owner when you go back for pick up. This is mostly done to discourage theft inside the stores. Now in Europe, as we entered the first mall, we paused at the entrance looking for a luggage deposit spot and a security guard to search us. Nothing. We did not want to look suspicious so we decided to enter the store, ever so cautiously, looking over

our shoulders waiting for someone to come and ask why we still had our luggage. No one ever came. We had a good laugh later when we realized things were different there. ~K. K When I traveled to India, there were some children and women who requested to touch my braids and to take photos with me while holding my braids. I don’t know what was so fascinating about my hairstyle but it sure was awkward! ~G. W I had traveled to Northern Kenya for a work trip. Kenya being home to at least 43 tribes, with various languages, I am always eager to learn a couple of new words when I visit different parts of the country. One day I was sitting with some locals and decided to impress them with few words I had learnt over the past week. It was going well until I uttered a word that was supposed to mean lady. Everyone became deathly silent. That should have been my cue to ask what was wrong, but no... I repeated the word. The elderly men began whistling and asking me who had taught me the word. Turns out what I had said meant a lady’s genitalia. Gasp! I was so embarrassed. I got over it soon enough to learn other words and phrases and made sure to double check their meaning to use them correctly.

Flagship Projects of Agenda 2063

Free movement of Persons in Africa

Why Agenda 2063? The need to envision a long-term 50 year development trajectory for Africa is important as Africa needs to revise and adapt its development agenda due to ongoing structural transformations; increased peace and reduction in the number of conflicts; renewed economic growth and social progress; the need for people centered development, gender equality and youth empowerment; changing global contexts such as increased globalisation and the ICT revolution; the increased unity of Africa which makes it a global power to be reckoned with and capable of rallying support around its own common agenda; and emerging development and investment opportunities in areas such as agri-business, infrastructure development, health and education as well as the value addition in African commodities The Vision and African Aspirations for Agenda 2063 Agenda 2063 is founded on the African Union (AU) Vision of “An Integrated, Prosperous, and Peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the International arena.” In addition to the various activities to be implemented at continental and Member State level, Agenda 2063 proritises several flagship projects whose implementation is seen as key in accelerating Africa’s growth.
