BHEKI MTHEMBU CEO CIMERWA

The Rwandan Government is currently implementing a ‘Made in Rwanda’ policy in order to address its trade deficit and drive private sector development. Since its implementation, how has CIMERWA benefited from this agenda? First and foremost, it is fantastic for such a policy to be put in place and we are glad it is happening. Over the past 34 years we have had the pleasure of being the most sought out Cement Company by Rwandans and this really makes it more special as it means that the Government is promoting domestic consumption with the policy - something we can’t take lightly but to soar with it as far as we aspire to mount. It also demands of us to be competitive in our customer value propositions. Ultimately domestic consumption helps to reduce our trade deficit. How can the local industry overcome the challenges that are constraining it from realizing its full potential vis-a-vis the government’s initiative to promote Made in Rwanda products? Simply by keeping abreast with what the Made in Rwanda agenda is about and doing whatever it takes to produce quality products (e.g acquiring world class cement manufacturing technology and local skills development) can we as the local industry overcome the said challenges. Do you think there’s a need for raising awareness perhaps to all Rwandans on the importance of prioritizing locally made products? There is indeed a need since certain people prefer to stay trendy with imported products perceived to be of 14

| INZOZI – RWANDAIR’S INFLIGHT MAGAZINE

good quality but our products are ISO certified. As CIMERWA Ltd and other big industries in Rwanda, we all have major roles to play in prioritizing the development and the advancement of Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs) as the catalyst to achieving economic growth and development. Of course there have been strides made but there is still more to be done. As compared to imports, what is one thing that gives CIMERWA an edge that Rwandans need to know about? As mentioned above, having been around for a while now (34 years), we have understood what our customers need. CIMERWA cement has seen itself in most of Rwanda’s famous landmarks and infrastructure projects. That being said it is our heritage that makes us a trustworthy cement brand. We have then perfected our products such as CIMERWA 32.5N, CIMERWA 42.5N and CIMERWA42.5R and offered solutions such as silos in construction sites and bulk cement delivery services a first of its kind that is made in Rwanda. Our products meet the world-class standards of performance and our operations are certified to the ISO 9001 listing for Quality Management Systems. These products have become staples to both small and large scale clients in the construction industry. Overall we are ready to offer after sales services such as technical assistance, call center and sales force when the need comes as well as take in queries making sure our clients are satisfied and in return stay loyal to us.

CIMERWA being a Made in Rwanda product, do you think brand/product differentiation is imperative for the company to achieve success, if so, what are some of the ways CIMERWA has carved its niche? It is important to have one for the purpose of standing out, making a mark and also stay away from counterfeit products. We have done so by revamping our brand vision and continue to improve product quality as we aim to meet our company’s vision. What do you envision come this year? We want to introduce new product innovation and continue to drive our Strengthening Rwanda agenda everywhere we operate and sell our products. What is one thing you would want to leave our readers with? To you the readers, I’d tell you to be more open in trying to embrace the Made in Rwanda products and give them a try, they will astound you as we go over and above to first understand your needs, then deliver goods or services you require with great mastery.

Company and project overview CIMERWA is the market leader and only integrated cement producer in Rwanda, with a well-established brand. Established in 1984, its production plant is in Bugarama, Rusizi district, in the southern region bordering the DRC and Burundi. Two years ago, CIMERWA commissioned a technologically advanced 600,000 tpa cement production plant in Bugarama Post. Commissioning and ramp-up processes have been optimized in line with growing volumes, and production capacity utilization is expected to rise from 65% to 80%. Since commissioning the new plant in 2015, when CIMERWA held 21% of the market, it has increased its market share to 55% by year-end 2018. This growth came on the back of

increased domestic infrastructure delivery with bulk cement sales and higher export sales volumes. Volume growth was supported by implementing an innovative and adaptive route-to-market strategy, which includes initiatives to improve customer value-added service and reduce logistics costs by developing transport capacity in Rwanda. Emissions during the period were maintained below specification limits in compliance with permit conditions. CIMERWA also made good progress towards world-class safety standards. Through focused initiatives that include employee training and awareness, equipment redesign and engineering controls, the factory has exceeded 2 million hours (some 370 days) without any lost-time injury

Highlights • Successful launch of bulk-delivery service to our construction and concrete product manufacturers’ segments • Introduction of premium product (42.5R) to the highly refined construction segment • Domestic sales volumes up 20% • ISO 9001:2015 QMS certification • 3 million hours without lost-time injury • Overall Best Exhibitor 2018 Tradeshow-PSF • Best 2018 Taxpayer Made in Rwanda category • Joint Platinum Winner 2018 Logistics Achiever Award

very year, on the 8th of March, the world joins hands to celebrate all women. This year, UN Women and its partners will celebrate International Women’s Day

under the theme “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change”, a call for more innovative approaches to achieve gender equality. Located in the heart of Africa, and hailed as a gender equality success story, Rwanda is considered as one of the best places to be a woman in the world. According to the World Economic Forum, the country is the most gender equal in Africa and the sixth globally; a position that seemed impossible only 25 years after undergoing one of the world’s worst tragedies, the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Rwanda’s journey shows that political will at the highest level, gender-sensitive policies and laws, and a strong accountability framework are paramount in fostering inclusive societies. H.E. Paul Kagame, the President of the Republic of Rwanda, is one of the 10 Heads of States globally championing the HeForShe campaign launched by UN Women in 2014 to engage men and boys as allies for gender equality. To date, close to 300,000 Rwandans have signed up for the campaign. At the institutional level, the unique “gender machinery” with its four institutions (Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion, Gender Monitoring Office, National Women Council and Forum of Women Parliamentarians) is at the forefront of efforts to promote gender equality throughout the country with impressive results.

fosters inclusive economic growth. The economic arguments in support of gender equality and women’s empowerment abound. Gender equality could add as much as $28 trillion dollars to the global annual GDP by 2025 and up 6% to GDP in Africa annually. Auspiciously, women’s contribution to the Rwandan economy through their businesses, farms, entreprises, jobs or through their unpaid care work at home, is increasingly getting much needed attention. According to the IMF, Rwanda’s GDP growth rate averaged 2.2 percentage points above the EAC and sub-Saharan African from 2005-

Our journey from Cape to Cairo. Liquid Telecom recently completed the first terrestrial fibre network to span the entire length of the continent - running all the way from Cape Town in South Africa to Cairo in Egypt. The Cape to Cairo network has been some 10 years in the making and is a historic moment for Liquid Telecom and for a more connected Africa. Stretching over 10,000km, it is the shortest direct fibre route between South Africa and Egypt. This means we can offer significantly reduced latency between African countries. Our story doesn’t end here. We are expanding our network further across the region - connecting more African countries and people.

RWANDA: 25th Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi. Remembering the past, rebuilding the future By | Par: Dr Jean Damascene Bizimana 2019 marks the 25th commemoration of the genocide perpetrated against Tutsi. This is an important opportunity to preserve the memory of the genocide and to share with the younger generations the lessons that Rwanda has learned from its history.

together to develop a plan to exterminate Tutsi. This plan consisted of the use of hatred and ethnic violence, the training and distribution of weapons to the militia and the preparation of lists of people to be eliminated. The stated objective was the complete eradication of the Rwandan population defined by a Tutsi ethnic identity. These extremists incited the Hutu to kill all Tutsi, but also the other Hutu obstructing their criminal enterprise (influential democrats, human rights activists, Hutu opposed to the genocide). However, if these Hutu were killed, they were killed in a targeted manner and for political reasons because they hindered the genocidal machine. But, the Tutsi were decimated as a targeted ethnic group.

A panoramic view on Edinburg, Scotland Photo by Popova Marina

“I think among some people there may be a bit of a misconception about Scotland being quite an 'old' country where people always wear kilts, but the reality is that Scotland is very much a modern, advanced country like others around us. Our major cities have diverse student populations, for example, and some of our cities have a thriving tech industry as well.” Most of the attractions recommended on various sites online are majorly located in Edinburgh and Glasgow. It is easy to see why; stunning architecture and wide selection of attractions which include the Edinburgh Castle, Kelgroove Art Gallery and Museum, Camera Obscura, The Scottish Story telling Centre. However, you have a choice to go against the norm and go watch dolphins in Aberdeen or walk the beautiful gardens and

Endemic species of animals, not found anywhere else in the world live in this unique ecosystem. The park makes a perfect destination for multi-day trekking or shorter hikes, or as an extension of a visit to the historical sites of Gondar, Axum and Lalibela. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the huge plateau was formed 40 million years ago and eroded through the ages to form the rugged landscape we see today. Its highest peak, called Ras Dashen, lies at 4,550m and drops a staggering 1,500m into the plains. The

THE YEAR OF REFUGEES, RETURNEES AND INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS: TOWARDS DURABLE SOLUTIONS TO FORCED DISPLACEMENT IN AFRICA. Every year, the Heads of State and Government of The African Union decide upon a theme which focuses on a key issue facing the continent and which constitutes a focal area upon which the key activities and messages of the African Union will be anchored. In 2019 the annual theme of the African Union will be “The Year of Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons: Towards durable solutions to forced displacement in Africa. The 2019 AU Theme is driven by the need for greater commitment by Africa to address the plight of its citizens in forced migration situations, by implementing strategic and relevant programmes and working towards the ratification of the various AU treaties and legal instruments addressing the plight of refugees and displaced persons to ensure we achieve the goal of Aspiration 4 of Agenda 2063 to provide a peaceful and secure environment for all Africans on the continent. Various AU treaties governing issues related to refugees, human rights, governance and promoting peace on the continent include the OAU Convention Governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa, African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, OAU Convention for the Elimination of Mercenaries in Africa, OAU Convention on the Prevention and Combating of Terrorism and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance. Find out more about these treaties as well and their status of ratification by African states by visiting www.au.int About the 2019 Theme Logo: The logo for the Theme of the Year has been built around the crisis facing refugees in Africa. Whereas migration is a common phenomenon as people have always relocated for various reasons, in the case of Africa the continent is often painted as a miserable place because migration is as a result of civil strife, poverty and a myriad of other factors thereby promoting the narrative that Africa cannot care for its people. Africans and their governments have always opened their borders and welcomed into their communities their brothers and sister fleeing their homes for various reasons providing a safe haven as long as it is required. The 2019 AU theme logo shows a mother embracing Africa with its child which encompasses love and affection. Africa knows how to take care of its own in each regard no matter what.

countries as in developing ones. In the majority of African societies, mental health remains a topic that is rarely discussed, and people living with severe mental health issues are often kept hidden by their families. Those struggling with less severe matters usually deal with them in secret, for fear of being marginalized. Yet, according to Laure Iyaga, the founder of SANA initiative, “a person's

mental health goes hand in hand with their physical health, and both have the potential to impact the other significantly.” Launched in January 2018, the SANA initiative aims to deconstruct the taboo surrounding mental health in Rwanda and in the rest of Africa. It held its first open dialogue on mental health, during an event that included panel discussions, motivational talks, and workshops. “The idea behind the various platforms was to start a form of awareness raising on the topic of mental health. The results went far beyond our expectations as the participants did not limit themselves to asking questions, they also shared their personal stories,” explains Laure Iyaga. According to Laure, such an initiative was not easy to launch in a society like hers in Rwanda." “Here, everything pertaining to mental health is systematically equated to dementia (insanity), so we have set ourselves the mission to demystify

Pili Pili encompasses more than a bistro lounge and boutique hotel, unlike its name implies. It is the ultimate package: a place to wine, dine, and stay; Kigali’s best sports bar and a happening spot; a seeand-be-seen kind of nook. It is also a choice family hang out by day and a hot spot for revelers by night. Pili Pili is all about the experience; from the thoughtful selection of food and drink, an exquisite in-house music policy, to the splendid views of Kigali’s famed undulating hills that mellow into a Disneyland-like showcase of lights as the sun sets over Kigali. Pili Pili opened its doors to the public in December 2015, this around the same time mega hospitality brands like the Kigali Marriott and Radisson Blu hotels were setting up shop across town. For the upperclass haunt with an international clientele that Pili Pili set out to be, one would have thought the timing to be suicide. But Pili Pili set itself apart by curving out a new trend in food, service, and ambiance. Its location, smug atop a hill in the emerging middle-class suburb of Kibagabaga, almost between Kigali town and the airport was a welcome move away from standard hotel fare.

The sprawling facility consists of three broad sections; a main bar area on the ground level, a swimming pool and adjoining gardens with Sundowner-style seating, and a wooded upper terrace as the main dining section. Fitted with numerous TV screens, the bar section caters to the sports enthusiasts, with beer garden bench seating conducive for groups. With a panoramic view of the adjoining hills, the upstairs restaurant offers guests a bistro culinary experience, fusing local and international flavours; from grilled-to-perfection meats to pizza to fresh fish and Indian Ocean seafood. Pili Pili’s popularity with Kigalians and foreign visitors, including international celebrities is no coincidence. Its atmosphere delicately blends the rustic feel of an East African game lodge setting (simple but tasteful wood design), and a Nantucket beach bar, for those familiar with the isolated but dream destination island off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in the US. It is little wonder that Pili Pili oozes an aura of something of Great Lakes region renown. With its hand crafted thatch dome, it is the true embodiment of a real lifestyle influenced by the Caribbean/East African rim movement. For Rudy Ghirini, the brain behind the concept and owner of Pili Pili, it all started as a continuation of the story of Bora Bora Beach Bar in Bujumbura, Burundi, also his creation. From the onset, Ghirini set out to make the establishment its own musical genre kind of bistro; curving out a niche with live DJ sessions of lounge, ambient, chill-out, and tropical house sounds, along with the occasional live band. “The best ideas are those that gather simple and universal concepts, such as enjoying a drink in a unique natural environment with music as the soundtrack of that special moment,” he reckons. Pili Pili’s earliest reputations was that of first bona fide sports bar in Kigali, with an impressive display of seven large screens and three satellite dishes, meaning one could choose from three games being screened simultaneously. For sports bonanzas like the FIFA World Cup in Russia this year, management went the extra mile to bring on the football craze, erecting a large projector screen by the poolside, further setting the establishment apart from competitors. At the same time, a miniature urban football pitch emerged beyond the sand area adjoining the pool, that is open to adults and children alike for a game of fun football. The swimming pool area not only creates an urban beach ambiance, it also is the main draw for families and groups of friends seeking daytime relaxation while soaking up the tropical sun. A white sand park on the swimming pool periphery is the perfect frolicking spot for the young ones. The sundowner-style seating by the poolside is just what the doctor would recommend for a lazy day.

Together with the Rwandan Athletics Federation (RAF), they decided on an annual running event, which would eventually become the Kigali International Peace Marathon.

Bigger and better Fifteen years ago, endurance running was relatively new to Rwanda. In its first edition in 2005, only a couple of hundred runners took part in the race, but this has changed considerably over the years. “Running brings many people on board, not just as spectators but as participants,” says RAF Ttechnical Ddirector, John Peter Ndacyayisenga. “Every year we work hard to make the event bigger and better for participants and spectators alike. FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | Kids

The Easter Egg Hunt All the cousins were gathered on Grandpa’s back porch. Chad looked about eagerly, waiting for the signal to start the annual Easter Egg Hunt. It was fun to see Tina, who had been very sick and was now much better. Last year she could hardly even walk and had just watched the Easter Egg Hunt. “I hope I win the gift certificate this year,” she said to Chad, excitedly. “I can run fast and keep up with everyone now. I saw a wonderful yellow stuffed bunny that I want.” Chad knew that Tina’s parents couldn’t afford stuffed animals. They had lots of medical bills to pay for. “There’s a red airplane that I’d buy if I won,” he told Tina. He wished they could both win. “Here comes Grandpa! Finally!” another cousin said excitedly. Chad clutched his red bucket as

sometimes snitch other people’s eggs.”

Chad’s cousins rushed off, already finding several eggs. But he ran faster. He found a green egg, then a yellow egg, then a blue polka dotted egg!

But before Tina could answer, Grandpa blew his whistle and waved the white flag.

He glanced around and was surprised to see that Tina had her purple bucket almost half filled with eggs. She was right. She could run fast this year. She wasn’t sick anymore. “Come on!” she urged him. “I know a place where Grandpa hides lots of eggs!” She led him to a grove of pine trees. The yellow sunshine formed speckles on the ground. The pine needles crackled beneath their feet. Sure enough, they soon found a pink egg and a red egg and a black and white striped egg. Soon they had their buckets full and started back toward the house.

They all gathered at the porch to count their eggs. Chad and Tina had exactly the same number of eggs. So did another cousin. “Okay,” said Grandpa, “it looks like Chad and Tina and Michael are tied. There’s one more egg out there! Go find it!” Chad had never been more excited. He’d never been this close to winning. “Come on,” he exclaimed. But Tina held back. “You still want to go together?” He paused a moment, then said, “sure, why not? After all, as much as I’d like that red airplane, it’s still all just for fun. Come on!”

“I’ve never had this many before,” said Tina, happily. “Oh, I would love to have that yellow bunny.”

Tina smiled happily, “okay.”

The cousins were still scrambling around but seemed to have run out of places to look.

Michael was off hunting under the porch steps but Chad said, “we haven’t looked under the apple tree.”

“Watch your bucket,” Chad told Tina, “you know how they

“I’ll give you a hint!” shouted Grandpa. “The egg is orange.”

“That’s right. He almost always hides one there. But it’s a long way.” By the time they got to the big old tree in the middle of the meadow, Tina was very tired. Chad remembered that it hadn’t been all that long

since she’d been so sick. “You look, Chad. I’m too tired.” The girl sat down on the ground. Chad looked all around the old apple tree but found nothing. Finally they started back. They passed some big purple flowers And they got the idea at the same time. They turned back and looked. There nestled under the leaves was the orange egg. They had seen it at the same time! Chad and Tina looked at each other, then back at the egg. They both reached for it, then drew back. Chad thought about the red airplane. Then suddenly, all he really cared about was a yellow bunny for a girl who’d had a very difficult year. “You take it,” he said quickly. “Are you sure?” Tina asked. “Yeah, go ahead.” But she still didn’t pick it up so Chad took the orange egg and placed it in her bucket. “I mean it. It’s okay.” “Thanks, Chad.” On the way back, Chad felt a little sad about the red airplane but every time he looked at Tina’s happy face, he was glad he had done it. Tina told all about it when they got back to the house and even though she would get her yellow bunny, Grandpa gave Chad a shining blue ribbon. “That’s for being kind. You’re a winner with all of us.”
