FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | Welcome

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you onboard this flight and to this new edition of Inzozi Magazine. Sit back, relax and enjoy your journey. Thank you for choosing to fly RwandAir. In line with our commitment to offer better connections to our customers, in the last quarter we spread our wings to three new destinations; Kinshasa, Guangzhou and Tel Aviv. We are pleased to see the opportunities these new routes are opening for our customers but also for the airline and we will continue to expand further in order to serve you better. As we grow, we always keep Corporate Social Responsibility at heart. I am glad to mention our recent partnership with Save a Child’s Heart (SACH), an Israel-based international non-profit organization. RwandAir sponsored eight Rwandan children, their mothers and two accompanying medical personnel with tickets from Kigali to Tel Aviv in Israel where the children underwent lifesaving heart treatment. This was made possible due to our recently opened direct flights between the two cities. We are proud to have supported this noble cause and we will keep supporting initiatives that contribute to the wellbeing of Rwandans and other communities where RwandAir operates. On 6th September 2019, the Rwanda Development Board will host the 15th edition of “Kwita Izina” a gorilla naming ceremony, which is also the biggest event on the country’s tourism calendar. Every year, new born gorilla babies are celebrated in an exciting event at the foothills of the Virunga Mountains. The event has grown to attract thousands of international guests including high ranking government officials, celebrities, conservation activists, international media houses to name but a few. RwandAir as a key player in the tourism industry is very proud to have been among the sponsors of this event for the past years and we will continue to contribute to the growth of tourism in Rwanda. Your feedback on our services as well as recommendations on what you expect in the future are always welcome as they help us to improve our product offering. You can write to us on info@rwandair.com or on our social media platforms. I also invite you to visit our website to book and pay for your flights, check-in, find out about our special offers or enroll in Dream Miles, our loyalty program to enjoy additional benefits. If you take a picture while flying with us do not forget to tag us. I wish you a pleasant journey and thank you for flying the dream of Africa.

HOW DO YOU What is your favorite Destination?

TRAVEL?

My favorite destination is Switzerland. It is a beautiful country. Geographically, the mountain tops often covered with snow, valleys decorated in numerous serene lakes surrounding very clean and organized cities makes it a sight one can never get enough of. I have been blessed enough to visit this magnificent and orderly country multiple times and every time I set feet into Lausanne or Lucerne, I feel alive. What can you not leave home without?

TEL AVIV: THE HILL OF SPRING By / Par: Trezer Oguda

110 years ago, 60 families got together and founded a Jewish neighborhood near Jaffa, an ancient port city in Israel. They named it Ahuzat Bayit. A year later in 1910, the name was changed to Tel Aviv, meaning “hill of spring.” This neighborhood has since grown exponentially into a city of 438, 818 inhabitants. It is the second most populous city in Israel after Jerusalem. Although Jerusalem is regarded as Israel’s capital city, Tel Aviv is the country’s economic center. There is so much to see once you set foot in this vibrant city.

Tourist Attractions

Is Tel Aviv safe for tourists? A frequently asked question, this one. Being a city in the Middle East, it may be quite unnerving for some people to consider visiting, what with the terrorist attack scenes plastered on TV. However, reviews beyond travel sites point to a city that is generally safe, save for a few pick pockets, petty crimes here and there. Travel guide site DIY Tel Aviv says of the city: “The fact is, terrorist attacks in Tel Aviv are incredibly rare. It’s probably the safest city in Israel and safer than much of the world. There is zero gun crime and you’re very unlikely to

get mugged anywhere. Violent crime in general is very rare.” The bottom-line is, the same extra caution you exercise when visiting unfamiliar territory anywhere in the world is the same you will need in Tel Aviv.

There was an opportunity and a business case in the medical MRI centre, and this was her entry point in a venture in radiology, which would become a sustainable medical business. About 3 years ago, Nita began recognizing how illequipped her own country was in responding to the needs of breast cancer, through the numerous cases for mammography which passed through her facility. Involved in technology upgrade and innovation through the facility she initiated her network of contacts to begin examining more efficient and cost-effective ways of cancer detection. The World Health Organisation labels our disease problems due to “lower resource settings”, “vulnerable populations” with late stage detection ability, “which means greater chances of morbidity and greater costs of care”

WHO Cancer Prevention Feeling the disparity of medical attention between developing and developed nation states as the main contributor of mis-management of this disease in her view, and the substantive analysis of many WHO publications, with the consequences of certain death as an outcome due to poor health policy and poor awareness campaigns in developing and lesser developed countries, Nita believes that we are failing our women.

The game changer in early detection according to Nita, is the iBreastExam, for women first and foremost, but obviously this affords African governments, social organizations and private health care. It allows a breast exam at substantially lower costs, which is discrete and patient friendly. This portable, hand-held device, which is non-invasive, cost effective, and able to detect cancer lumps in the breast tissue as small as 2mm in dimension. It is able to ‘zero-in’ on the women that need oncology care immediately and catch the disease in its early stages, providing a chance at life is what this portable ‘gadget’ gives a girl. Ideas Festival By/Par: François Tahon.

The African continent underwent enormous turmoil over the last sixty years. Countless armed conflicts devastated whole countries and sacrificed several generations. Famines that could not be mastered resulted in the fatal deaths of millions of Africans of all ages. Several dignitaries knowingly chose to lean on their seats, which became thrones, while some nations experienced putsch attempts. Until the end of the 20th century, the majority of African countries didn’t have the opportunity to develop peacefully within a context of full political or socio-economic independence. For twenty years, the situation has favorably evolved and the conditions of life have improved all over Africa, to such an extent that today, death risks in car accidents are higher than those that may be caused by an injury from an armed conflict. The situation has literally turned around, and a lot of spectacular progress has been observed and unanimously saluted in different

The organisers insist on African nations’ selfdetermination and on many added values, which may blossom on the big day if each country takes (back) its destiny in its hands. As such, the choice of the name of this festival is instructive: Kusi is a name of an East African wind, which can at the same time be understood as a movement that swipes away old habits and a force for implementing new ideas favorable to Africa. The choice of the venue for the first edition is not insignificant either. The festival will take place at Kigali Convention Center on Thursday 24 and Friday 25 October, 2019. Interviewed about this topic, Charles Onyango-Obbo, the eminent journalist, author and media leader that we no longer need to introduce and who is involved in this project, replies straightforwardly:

erhaps, the greatest animal conservationist and environmentalist of our time is Sir David Attenborough, whose lifetime has been dedicated

to increasing humanity’s awareness of the devastation caused by industrialization and global population growth and its impact on the animal kingdom, the seas and oceans and the source of our existence, the ecosystems. From the world’s tallest land mammal, the giraffe, the heaviest on earth, the African elephant to the most unusually scaled, the pangolin! The cry for conservationism and protectionism is growing louder on our Continent, with few African countries being recognized globally for taking conservationism, for animal welfare and environmental impact, seriously. It all seems to come down to individuals, one standing out amongst the others, to just fight for the ‘wildlife’, to conserve the eco-systems for the relevance of all beings, to maintain the basic habitat and the processes of nature. In Zimbabwe, a short distance from the international airport of Harare, is a woman, with a farm of a different kind, whose known plight for animals was the reason she founded the “Wild is Life Trust and ZEN Sanctuary” almost 2 decades ago. “What have we got if we have lost our heritage? This is our home; this is our earth and our habitat, and we have to protect it.” The words spring out of Roxy’s mouth, and her lips remain

Wild is Life, or Wild life ~ Continuer à croire dans la magie du sauvage ?

“Que nous restera-t-il si nous sacrifions notre héritage ?” demande-t-elle d’emblée avec un sourire espiègle. explores how she invested in giving her home, her time, her care to rescue these animals and in this she found she saved a part of herself. “The Culture of Care is simply our life, a way that we can live, if we choose to live. It is the vision of a community that can do more when they work collectively towards the same goal. Reviving our culture of caring.” The Ritual of Wild is Life – Giving Back It is not possible to operate a sanctuary of this proportion without leadership, and there is focused comradery on the site, an instinctive understanding between them all. I attribute that to Roxy’s motherliness, like a lioness, she works with her pride, directing, signaling and feeding them, raising them in animal tones of silence and action. She actually describes how to define conservationism today, and how to change the paradigm of conventional thinking in this same manner. The work is tiring, and every handler is on a round the clock ‘vigil’ to keep the rescued animal secure and healthy. The story of Moyo is sweetly told, and followed by a deep sigh, as she recalls the ones that did not survive. “Its so hard to lose an animal, the grief is haunting, some of the handlers are so wounded by the loss they wail in the night, some weep silently. I am the last person to handle the animal, the last person to say I’m sorry we failed you.” What is the message that you want to leave here, what is it that you want to be remembered for? Bank of Kigali (BK), has been shaping the country’s economic landscape for over half a century. Recently it was restructured into a group with 4 subsidiaries. Rwanda’s largest commercial bank, has expended efforts and resources in intensifying its digitization process, building a new digital landscape across its range of products and services, aiding customers’ growth and profitability, in line with the government’s program of building a cashless economy.

Transformation Under the tremendous country leadership, Rwanda experienced a 8.6% GDP growth last year. We are involved in an enormous top to bottom digital transformation to deliver new products and experiences, especially to underserved segments of the economy and key population demographics like the youth and the unbanked. The digital platforms and services include driving uptake of debit and credit cards, use of our mobile applications, internet banking platforms among other digital platforms. As the largest financial institution in the market, by more than two times over our nearest competitor, we are in a unique position to profit from this and to better serve our customers. Fintechs are disrupting banks and we are right in the middle of it, we are in fact paving a new road, we are in a situation where in Rwanda 6% of lending goes to agriculture yet 30% of the economy is agriculture, we want to be able to serve farmers and the agriculture sector. We are going to lunch an app that is going to allow farmers to lend, borrow, to purchase insurance, and much more. We are investing in digital services and innovation to drive up financial inclusion and penetration in the local market. There is room to deepen financial inclusion and bank penetration by finding ways to digitize operations further to be more relevant in the economy. Differentiation Rwanda’s economic landscape holds so much untapped potential, so we’ve aligned our strategy to capitalize on it. Our priority is expanding our financial services portfolio to make our brand into a One-Stop Center under which those services are available to customers. We separate into a group of companies. For instance, our insurance is going to become an important part of our business, last year insurance had a of 2% market penetration in Rwanda. Insurance is a product that is not bought, its effectively solved, we have to be in a position to show people the benefits of insurance. I believe that in the next four, five to six years, our insurance business is going to be as big as our banking business. I believe that it’s in the interest of the market that there be some consolidation, it’s no secret that we are shopping for a potential consolidation in the market, insurance is a business that serves a very important public need. The consolidation will resolve into better efficiency, pricing and opportunities for consumers to buy better. Sustainability By being listed on the Nairobi Stock Exchange, it gives us greater access to capital, increase liquidity and there are also tremendous other benefits for raising our profile. Ten years ago the bank had 200 million dollars in assets, in 2019, the bank has crossed the billion dollar threshold of assets, that’s a huge victory for the Bank and for Rwanda, We are constantly looking for better ways to serve our customers, 27% of Rwandan have bank accounts, we believe that number should be up in the 70%, or 80% We are all about financial inclusion, tightening our margins, lowering our pricing and serving the population of this country.

His name has been buzzing around Kigali for some time now. Top chef and food entrepreneur Dieuveil Malonga is bringing his African roots and European kitchen experience together into whole new flavors and taste sensations. This dish, the ingredients of which can vary depending on the location, reflects his personal journey leading him from Africa to Europe and back to his Homeland. “My style is still evolving, as I learn and experiment every day.”

During his travels, Malonga encountered many talented local chefs but in his daily work as a consultant and chef, he also met organizations and restaurants owners who complained they could not find a good chef. So, in 2016 he founded “Chefs in Africa” (http:// chefsinafrica.fr), a digital platform that aims to cultivate the talent and culinary passion found in Africa. Through this platform, Malonga connects institutions, training centers and businesses with professional chefs and young culinary students who are looking for work

“DID YOU SAY RETURN?”: “Afroptimism” against reality By/Par: François Tahon

The Cameroonian essayist Yann Gwet, whose work is welcomed in the columns of several leading European newspapers (when he is not invited to comment on current events about the African continent on the radio) presented his first novel in Kigali. The book largely autobiographical entitled “Did you say return?”, draws up an uncompromising list of the difficulties encountered when the African national, who left for Europe to train his mind, develop his skills and extend his knowledge, returns to his native land. Yann Gwet was on familiar terms with the Parisian elite for several years, acquiring a university degree at Sciences Po before joining Accenture, a prestigious institution specializing in consulting. In both cases, this ambitious young person discovers a less glorious reality than expected and realizes that the reputation of those places were far from the daily reality of these establishments. Vanity, emptiness, and rivalry reign in the corridors of the school, according to his observations. At Accenture, it is the preeminence of form over substance, leading consultants to focus on plumbing and so-called knowledge and not solutions truly adapted to the specific needs of customers that shock the one who begins his first professional experience. Openness gives way to formatting, the appearance extinguishes knowledge, and Yann Gwet

redefines Africa’s mid-range hotel offering The name ONOMO has steadily gained traction in the hospitality sector in Africa, fast redefining the three and four star segment for business and leisure travel throughout the continent. It’s a lively brand, energetic and exciting whose name is sired from the mythology of the Dogon people from Mali, one of the world’s centres of culture, knowledge and wealth. It is believed that the goddess Amma’s son, ONOMO, was responsible for creating harmony on earth, and it is here that the brand finds it’s resonance. At the heart of the ONOMO Hotels experience is harmony: the meeting of function, connectivity, humanity and an unparalleled sensory experience, all in response to the needs of the modern nomad who travels for business and leisure throughout the African continent. ONOMO Hotels was created in 2009 with the idea of a mid-range African hotel brand with a strong localised identity, in harmony with the global standards of the mid-range hotel offering.

The group has had a successful run of hotel openings since inception, supported by it’s main investor, the Luxembourg-based Batipart Group. In 2017 the group successfully completed a €106m equity fundraiser, attracting two new investors, namely CDC Group plc, a UK Government-owned development finance institution and CIC Capital, the international private equity arm of CM-CIC Investment. In just under 10 years, ONOMO Hotel’s portfolio is sitting at 18 hotels, with ONOMO Maputo set to open its doors in September 2019 and ONOMO Dar Es Salaam to follow suit, while ONOMO Kampala is under construction, on course to open its doors in 2020. At the heart of the offering is a solid concept based on an accessible, consistent, and modern hotel business, in principal destinations. Simply put: ONOMO Hotels offer a reflection of the time, at an affordable price. Its hotels are exceptional at offering ultra comfortable, well-appointed rooms, good working spaces

within the rooms as well as the hub of the reception areas, uncapped free high-speed Wi-Fi, a multitude of TV channels, high-end security and great food and beverage outlets. The properties fully-equipped conference and meeting rooms add to the functionality of a hotel that caters for all needs and is able to host extraordinary events, incorporating sports, arts and culture. Each ONOMO Hotel captures the essence of its location and reflects the energy of its community. Eminent qualities of diverse African cultures are in the art that is always sourced locally, focusing on interesting, energetic, contemporary artists. There is a great network of ONOMO Hotels across the continent, accessible through Rwandair. Travellers can book a stay at any of them in Abidjan, Douala, Libreville, Conakry, Tanger, Casablanca, Rabat, Bamako, Kigali, Dakar, Lomé, Durban, Cape Town and Sandton.

Here too, the book provides observations and very interesting ideas. However, Mr Gwet does not proclaim himself judge and never claims to know the solutions to all the problems that plague Cameroonian or African society. The project, initially thought as arduous, is becoming almost insurmountable. So he ends up having to give up on his ambitious project and experiences death in his soul. After that he moves to Kigali in 2016, convinced of the Rwandan potential after several positive visits. Warmly welcomed, Mr Gwet and his family decided to settle there for an indefinite period, always keeping a close eye on their country of origin. The book bears the imprint of a committed man, favoring pragmatism over flamboyantly lyrical style, very precise in his descriptions, with a constant concern for the right word. Yann Gwet is a privileged witness of several worlds, and he is probably only at the beginning of a fruitful collection of books dedicated to the future of the African continent; the management of its resources; its position in a globalized world, and the many obstacles that will stand in its way.

in 2004 for the film Terre et Cendres, what do these kind of achievements mean for a writer/film-maker ? AR : Prizes are a question of spirit. The spirit of time. One’s time, that needs to be told for one to exist. History rewards the one who looks at it, tells it. It is more selfish and narcistic than artists. My prizes have given me a lot of confidence over my doubts. Given your wonderful career today, what would you say to the young Atiq Rahimi at the beginning of his career? AR : Live ! Read! And write! And finally, my imagination, my dreams, my nightmares, and my fantasies participate assiduously in all my creations. One of your most recent cinema projects is ‘Notre Dame Du Nil’ shot in Rwanda, can you tell us more about it ? AR : In 1993, horror has two faces, one Afghan, the other Rwandan. In the two countries. And in Rwanda, after a long period

“African studies came naturally to me because I always never envisioned a life working outside Africa,” she said. “I didn’t have dreams of leaving [Africa]. I only had dreams of exploring my home and its surroundings.” Emezi’s photography typically focuses on women’s reproductive rights, sexuality, beauty and human rights, and has taken her across Nigeria as well as to Liberia, Ivory Coast, Kenya and Rwanda. Some of her assignments adopt a transnational outlook, demonstrating humanity’s interconnectedness. Case in point, her ongoing Relearning Bodies project explores trauma beyond violence and abuse among Nigerians and Liberians with scars. The project aims to make scars as normal as faces and disabuse society of the idea that those who bear them are imperfect or unlovable. “There isn’t a single person who can go through life without a single mark on their body,” noted the photojournalist, “so why do we stare at people with scars as opposed to just seeing it as a norm?” Emezi has since overcome her insecurities, but her experiences undoubtedly continue to fuel Relearning Bodies.

LUPITA NYONG’OS DEBUT BOOK, SULWE, TO BE RELEASED ON OCTOBER 1, 2019 Lupita Nyong’o has written a book. For children. Why is this such a big deal? Well, a brief backstory... By/Par: Trezer Oguda

When the world renowned actress made a moving speech at the Essense awards in 2014, she spoke of a difficult time in her life.

LE LIVRE DU DÉBUT DE LUPITA NYONG’O, SULWE, À PARAȊTRE LE 1ER OCTOBRE, 2019

“I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful. I put on the TV and only saw pale skin. I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter-skinned. The morning would come and I would be so excited about seeing my new skin that I would refuse to look down at myself until I was in front of a mirror because I wanted to see my fair face first. And every day I experienced the same disappointment of being just as dark as I had been the day before. I tried

FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | FLIGHT INFO

SAFETY & LUGGAGE Ensuring your safe flight to & from the heart of Africa Safety Your safety and comfort are important to us. Please watch the demonstration or the video of the emergency equipment before takeoff. For more information refer to the safety leaflet in the seat pocket in front of you.

Take-Off Immediately after takeoff the aircraft climbs very steeply. Shortly afterwards you will hear a reduction in the engine sound, but the aircraft will continue to climb. All aircraft cabins are pressurized. Due to change in pressure during takeoff and landing, some passengers may experience slight discomfort in the ear. Relieve this by swallowing, yawning or pinching the nostrils gently and breathing out whilst keeping lips sealed. Should you feel unwell at any time, please ask the cabin crew for assistance.

Landing After touch down, you may notice an increase in engine noise level due to the reverse thrust being applied to assist braking. Please remain seated until the engines have been switched off and the doors are opened. Before leaving the aircraft, ensure you have all your belongings with you. Always keep your belt fastened until the plane comes to a complete stop.

FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | Kids

THE BOY... ...WHO CRIED WOLF

O

nce upon a time, there lived a shepherd boy who was bored watching his flock of sheep on the hill. To amuse himself, he shouted, “Wolf! Wolf! The sheep

are being chased by the wolf!” The villagers came running to help the boy and save the sheep. They found nothing and the boy just laughed looking at their angry faces. “Don’t cry ‘wolf’ when there’s no wolf boy!”, they said angrily and left. The boy just laughed at them. After a while, he got bored and cried ‘wolf!’

again, fooling the villagers a second time. The angry villagers warned the boy a second time and left. The boy continued watching the flock. After a while, he saw a real wolf and cried loudly, “Wolf! Please help! The wolf is chasing the sheep. Help!” But this time, no one turned up to help. By evening, when the boy didn’t return home, the villagers wondered what happened to him and went up the hill. The boy sat on the hill weeping. “Why didn’t you come when I called out that there was a wolf?” he asked angrily. “The flock is scattered now”, he said. An old villager approached him and said, “People won’t

believe liars even when they tell the truth. We’ll look for your sheep tomorrow morning. Let’s go home now”.
