Looking back, 2019 was a successful year as we launched three new destinations: Kinshasa, Guangzhou and Tel Aviv. These new routes have been performing very well giving us the confidence to continue expanding our network in order to serve you better.

Rwanda will also host the semifinals and finals of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) at the newly constructed Kigali Arena. This sporting event is expected bring together a large number of spectators especially from the African continent and we look forward to flying them to Kigali. In line with this, we are also proud to sponsor The Patriots BBC, the Rwandan Basketball champions as they go through the qualifiers for BAL. We would like to get your feedback on our services as well as recommendations on what you expect in the future. You can write to us on info@rwandair.com or on our social media platforms. I also invite you to visit our website to check our holiday packages and to enroll in Dream Miles, our loyalty program to enjoy additional benefits. Created in 2015 by Moses Twahirwa, a fashion enthusiast who started as a model, Moshions is the result of a plan dating back to early 2010. “I entered this business as a model and at that time, I already harboured the idea of creating a clothes brand that would make the local fashion colourful,” recalls the creator before adding that “in 2012, I started making creative essays for myself and friends, but it is in 2015 that the brand Moshions officially came into being.”

In four years, Moshions has established itself as inescapable in the fashion industry. Its collections have been celebrated in Rwanda (Kigali Fashion Week, Collective Fashion Week to name a few), but also in Nigeria and Tanzania. The brand signature is the incorporation of typically Rwandan emblems; pearls on a jacket, imigongo printed on a kimono or a dress. Rwandans are fond of it, particularly in the diaspora, the brand is quasi omnipresent on social networks, such communication channels meticulously exploited by Moshions team as Moses explains:

are eliminated. 4.

The Pan-African Payments and Settlement System (PAPSS): Is a centralised payment and settlement infrastructure for intra-African trade and commerce payments. This project which is being developed in collaboration with the African Export-Import Bank, Afreximbank will facilitate payments as well as formalise some of the unrecorded trade due to prevalence of informal cross-border trade in Africa. It will also provide alternative to current high-cost and lengthy correspondent banking relationships to facilitate trade and other economic activities among African countries through a simple, low-cost and risk-controlled payment clearing and settlement system. The benefits of PAPPS for cross-border payments include cost reduction; reduction in duration and time variability; decreasing liquidity requirements of commercial banks; decreasing liquidity requirements of central banks for settlement as well as its own payments; and strengthening Central Banks’ oversight of cross border payment systems.

5.

The African Trade Observatory: A trade information portal that will address hindrances to trade in Africa due to lack of information about opportunities, trade statistics as well as information about exporters and importers in countries.

President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger & Champion of the AfCFTA (Right) and Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi Secretary-General UNCTAD (Left) at launch of operational instrument of AfCFTA On May 30 th 2019 Africa made history as the Agreement establishing the AfCFTA officially entered into force. With 54 out of the 55 member states of the African Union signing the agreement, Africa brought into being the largest trading block since the formation of the WTO. The entry into force of the AfCFTA is also marked by the speed at which African countries worked together within a year to establish a regional trading block to promote intra-African trade following the adoption of the AfCFTA on 21 March 2018 in Kigali, Rwanda Following the ratification and entry into force of the AfCFTA, 5 supporting Operational Instruments were launched during the AU Summit held in Niamey, Niger in July 2019. These instruments are the key tools that will support the launch of the operational phase of the AfCFTA with start of trading scheduled for July 2020. The occasion also marked the announcement of the Republic of Ghana as the country to host the AfCFTA Secretariat. THE OPERATIONAL INSTRUMENTS OF THE AfCFTA 1. The Rules of Origin: A regime governing the conditions under which a product or service can be traded duty free across the region. 2.

The Tariff concessions: It has been agreed that there should be 90% tariff liberalisation and the deadline is 1st July 2020. (Over a 10 year period with a 5 year transition, there will be an additional 7 % for “sensitive products” that must be liberalised). This will be supported by the AfCFTA Trade in Goods online portal where Member States will upload their tariff

offers covering 90% of the tariff lines. The AfCFTA Online Negotiation Tool • Facilitate the negotiations on tariff liberalisation between State Parties, Customs Unions or Regional Groupings under the AfCFTA; •

Provide tools to ensure the technical quality of the offers made;

Increase transparency while safeguarding confidentiality; and

Provide tools for users/negotiating groups to interact.

The tool will be accessible to all parties to assist in their negotiations and will be a collaborative platform to exchange the lists of products defined at the tariff line level as well as the tariff that could be applied. The tool will allow each party to:- define their own product lists; share lists with selected parties for discussion; comment on shared lists; and suggest counter proposals. In order to facilitate the creation of initial product lists, a module will analyse various factors among which are:- fiscal revenues; employment by sector; production; potential trade; existing tariffs; commitments; and Infant industries. Based on this methodology, the tool will automatically suggest product lists as a potential starting point for negotiation, taking into account the tariff-dismantling schedules. 3.

The Continental Online Tool/Mechanism for monitoring, reporting and elimination of Non-tariff Barriers (NTBs): (NTBs) are a greater hindrance to intra-African Trade than Tariff Barriers. One of the key objectives of the AfCFTA is to progressively eliminate existing NTBs and refrain from introducing new ones in order to enhance and facilitate intra Africa trade. The Continental tool will ensure NTBs are monitored with a view to ensuring they

The lack of up-to-date and reliable trade data and statistics is one of the contributing factors to the low level of official intra-African trade. Instances abound of goods and services, which could have been sourced from other African countries being imported by African countries. According to ITC (2018), more than 40% of African companies identify lack of access to information and absence of inquiry points as factors affecting the business environment across the continent. Whereas, a number of African countries and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) have established trade information portals and systems several challenges remain such as: outdated information; uniformity of data; absence of data and information on non-tariff measures and informal trade and limited collaboration between various government agencies as well as countries and RECs. The trade observatory will act as a central repository providing exhaustive qualitative and quantitative trade data and information at the continental level to enable policymakers and the private sector to make evidenced-based policies and business decisions.

What can you tell us about the movie? The separation of his parents is very hard; it is not simply the end of their love, but also the separation of a white French and a Rwandan refugee of Tutsi origin in Bujumbura. The father full of colonial bias tells his wife: “Do you know how many African women would dream of being in your place?” And the mother lets off steam on her children when, after the Genocide, she yells at her son: “You’re like those dirty French guys who let us die there!” These verbal assaults trigger questions for Gaby. Questions that he cannot answer and that make him suffer. Did his mother marry his father to “go shopping

he does not understand. You shot this film in Rwanda with a team of Rwandan actors as well as actors from other countries. How was the adventure? My biggest concern about Petit Pays was the distribution of roles. How to get the right actors, understand them, work with them in several languages (Kinyarwanda / Swahili / Français). Through Gaël Faye I met Dida Nibagwiré for the casting. Dida and her team had to meet more than five hundred people across the country; from Mahama camp (where we organized a cast with several Burundian refugees) through Cyangugu, Butare, Gisenyi, Goma ... For every role, as minimal as it is, a very precise research was conducted. Very quickly the actress who played the role of my mother has imposed herself in the role of the mother of Gaby. I saw very few actresses for the 54 | INZOZI – RWANDAIR’S INFLIGHT MAGAZINE

character. Isabelle immediately incarnated this haughty and selfish Yvonne, who in fact hides a great fragility. I knew she would be perfect or rather, “perfectly imperfect” with Jean Paul Rouve who interprets the father. The biggest difficulty was the cast of the movie’s many children - Gaby’s band. It was very difficult to find kids that worked together in sync. But in the end the alchemy of the group is visible. It’s a small miracle: Djibril, Delya, Tao, Ruben, Kenny, Brian, Nelson ... all these children are breaking the screen. It is while advancing in the casting that I realised the complexity of the subject discussed in Gaël’s book. That I discovered it, I will say ... concretely, through men, women, children who shared fragments of life with the story told in the movie. It was the meeting with these men and women that we auditioned - with whom we spoke, who told us their story - who gave me a kind of photograph of the country in

Is there anything in particular that has marked you in Rwanda? I stayed there for 6 months and I obviously do not know Rwanda. What impressed me most are the many facets of this country. There is a Rwanda that is rebuilding at an incredible speed, the country of social advances, medical, impressive infrastructure, where access to education has leapt in a few years, the country where tourists come more and more numerous to go trekking, see the great apes and pay respect to victims in the memorials. It is the country that turns the page of the Genocide, it is the country that freed itself from colonialism. It is the country turned towards the future. And then there is a Rwanda where signs of the Genocide can still be felt, too present, hanging in all memories. There is the country of those who were there in 1994 and those who were

FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | Lifestyle

A - Can I answer your questions with a question? You know why blue is my favourite color? It is underneath these skies that we take shape, that we become the change we seek. I knew I wanted to be a fitness professional from a young age, and my experiences as an athlete when I was younger, and again through the Zimbabwean Bikini Body Championships, which enabled me to grasp the entire process of athletic discipline, courage and self-belief. You need self-belief in this industry, as you know it is highly competitive. There are many stumbling blocks to be a black woman fitness professional of standing. The first is within our culture, a ‘trainer’ is not regarded as a respectable career choice and secondly within the community itself, that unnatural assumption that black fitness consultants are not as good as their non-black colleagues and there is consequently an economic disadvantage we face. These challenges did not divert my objective. I continued to push my professionalism and results oriented programs. I believe the body can achieve what the mind believes, and I began to work on a fitness consultation approach that encompassed the physical training regiment, the nutrition goals and dietary planning with regular interval monitoring and the mental health and motivational support to get that client, ANY client fully on board for the hour of training.

I counteracted

the stigmas by devising a 12-week program that harnessed the energy of the individuals and encouraged a positive flow of results. Q - Tells us more about the results and your formula for fitness-success A - The testimonials of many clients are an incredible reflection of the success of #SweatNation and The Grind. The ‘fitness myth’ that I need to bust though is that trainers do the work; the work is entirely the client. Once the 60 | INZOZI – RWANDAIR’S INFLIGHT MAGAZINE

Toutefois,

emotions around their physical transformation. Q - What’s your advice to us this Christmas time and New Year? How do we remain mindful of staying fit and healthy? A - I would say that it’s important to control the space you are in, health and fitness are about lifestyle and ability to have some measure of control over ourselves within any given environment. But it is also the time of year to give thanks and joy to others, and so make the most of the festive time with family, while learning to make wiser eating choices and limit the alcohol intake. As for the New Year and new you, make it count. Fitness in 2020 is a goal that can be achieved, so plan the fitness program. FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | Lifestyle FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | Advertorial

Pili Pili encompasses more than a bistro lounge and boutique hotel, unlike its name implies. It is the ultimate package: a place to wine, dine, and stay; Kigali’s best sports bar and a happening spot; a seeand-be-seen kind of nook. It is also a choice family hang out by day and a hot spot for revelers by night. Pili Pili is all about the experience; from the thoughtful selection of food and drink, an exquisite in-house music policy, to the splendid views of Kigali’s famed undulating hills that mellow into a Disneyland-like showcase of lights as the sun sets over Kigali. Pili Pili opened its doors to the public in December 2015, this around the same time mega hospitality brands like the Kigali Marriott and Radisson Blu hotels were setting up shop across town. For the upperclass haunt with an international clientele that Pili Pili set out to be, one would have thought the timing to be suicide. But Pili Pili set itself apart by curving out a new trend in food, service, and ambiance. Its location, smug atop a hill in the emerging middle-class suburb of Kibagabaga, almost between Kigali town and the airport was a welcome move away from standard hotel fare. 100

The sprawling facility consists of three broad sections; a main bar area on the ground level, a swimming pool and adjoining gardens with Sundowner-style seating, and a wooded upper terrace as the main dining section. Fitted with numerous TV screens, the bar section caters to the sports enthusiasts, with beer garden bench seating conducive for groups. With a panoramic view of the adjoining hills, the upstairs restaurant offers guests a bistro culinary experience, fusing local and international flavours; from grilled-to-perfection meats to pizza to fresh fish and Indian Ocean seafood. Pili Pili’s popularity with Kigalians and foreign visitors, including international celebrities is no coincidence. Its atmosphere delicately blends the rustic feel of an East African game lodge setting (simple but tasteful wood design), and a Nantucket beach bar, for those familiar with the isolated but dream destination island off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in the US. It is little wonder that Pili Pili oozes an aura of something of Great Lakes region renown. With its hand crafted thatch dome, it is the true embodiment of a real lifestyle influenced by the Caribbean/East African rim movement. For Rudy Ghirini, the brain behind the concept and owner of Pili Pili, it all started as a continuation of the story of Bora Bora Beach Bar in Bujumbura, Burundi, also his creation. From the onset, Ghirini set out to make the establishment its own musical genre kind of bistro; curving out a niche with live DJ sessions of lounge, ambient, chill-out, and tropical house sounds, along with the occasional live band. “The best ideas are those that gather simple and universal concepts, such as enjoying a drink in a unique natural environment with music as the soundtrack of that special moment,” he reckons. Pili Pili’s earliest reputations was that of first bona fide sports bar in Kigali, with an impressive display of seven large screens and three satellite dishes, meaning one could choose from three games being screened simultaneously. For sports bonanzas like the FIFA World Cup in Russia this year, management went the extra mile to bring on the football craze, erecting a large projector screen by the poolside, further setting the establishment apart from competitors. At the same time, a miniature urban football pitch emerged beyond the sand area adjoining the pool, that is open to adults and children alike for a game of fun football. The swimming pool area not only creates an urban beach ambiance, it also is the main draw for families and groups of friends seeking daytime relaxation while soaking up the tropical sun. A white sand park on the swimming pool periphery is the perfect frolicking spot for the young ones. The sundowner-style seating by the poolside is just what the doctor would recommend for a lazy day. Toujours l'espoir

About his childhood, he confesses that he drew on every single piece of paper he could find at Nyundo orphanage, which saw him growing and where supervisors beat him, exasperated by his devouring passion. The neighbouring school of art fascinated him and when his uncle ended up taking him in at ten years of age, the little Antonio didn’t miss an occasion to visit it and examine students’ works. “Back home, I tried to replicate what I saw and that’s how I discovered my style,” recalls the one who never took a single class. To nurture the metaphors sometimes soft, sometimes confrontational of his drawings, Antonshi does not hesitate to cover his painting with natural products: “I sometimes use floral pigments or sand. At the beginning, it was only about compensating the lack of certain materials I could not find in Rwanda, but those mixtures turned out to be an added value.” His drawings are similar to polyphonies with criss-crossing lines, in a contrapuntal style. Their gravity reflects a discomfort and anxiety vis-à-vis a contemporary society that Antonshi does not seem to carry in his sensitive heart. Between movie sets and décor painting, (he was in Our Lady of the Nile

The various shapes and sizes of the works I create increase the spectrum of topics that I can address,” he explains. “My next project will be entitled “Ubwenge bucuramye” which means withdrawal into oneself in Kinyarwanda. The irresistible emotional force that can emerge from certain portraits convinced him to explore this discipline, and brought him to his native village of Gisenyi (in the northwest at the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo) where he continued several series of highly symbolic prints, linked to his personal story and that of the country.

Rwanda Film Office, a new tool to propel the national audiovisual industry to the top By | Par: François Tahon

The new institution set up by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) intends to streamline the audio-visual sector, in close collaboration with all its stakeholders and the Ministry of Culture. Ultimately, new jobs and a worldclass tourism strategy should emerge.

In addition to the expected benefits of this tourism marketing, filming in Rwanda would naturally lead to job creations. Between specialized technicians (in make-up, costumes, lighting, photography, etc.) and the tertiary sector (meals and hotel accomodation), this would be an added value for all regions concerned. Some organizations conceived elsewhere in the world on this model were able, in a second phase, to diversify their activities and launch a co-production section of films shot on the territory, guaranteeing a financial windfall in the event of box-office success (directly reinjected in the following projects). While waiting to see if RFO will follow this direction, the emulation born of this new initiative should logically pave the way for a modernization of the whole sector and its expansion: a prestigious film school could be created, with the possible support of an institution recognized by the community, the Kigali Audio-visual Forum (KAF) could register as a key event of the African cultural calendar, and who knows, a theatre could one day be inaugurated. The country has the potential to develop this virtuous circle and many hopes will be allowed to thrive. Through effective collaboration and joint efforts among all stakeholders, Rwanda could use a cultural pillar essential to increase its employment rate and further assert itself on the international scene. 74 | INZOZI – RWANDAIR’S INFLIGHT MAGAZINE

True to their suspicions, the staff found towels, electronics, decorative pieces and other things that had them fuming with rage. The family then tried to convince the staff not to call the police, saying they will pay for every item.

5. Tea set Now, who is going around stealing tea cups, pots and spoons? Don’t lift your hand, that was a rhetorical question. If you are feeling tempted to carry something from the tea station, how about the sugar, coffee and tea sachets? These are usually complimentary. Do help yourself.

Mickey, whose impoverished father worked himself to death tilling the soil, goes on to criticise the emperor for neglecting the poor and the feudal system that favours landowners at their expense. Sensing that demonstrations are on the horizon, the emperor tells his prime minister to appease the peasants with hand-outs.

“Ethiopia had become a country of watchers,” concludes Hailu after his release from prison.

But others like Dawit take up subversion as a weapon against totalitarianism. Resistance then becomes an act of burying the executed, distributing political pamphlets critical of the regime, displaying Ethiopia’s pre-revolution flag in private, and quietly supporting dissidents. These acts of rebellion soon prove insufficient and ineffectual to Dawit, who eventually joins the armed resistance when a neighbour’s young son is imprisoned and tortured to death for inadvertently helping rebels. Although Ethiopia has the distinction of being the only country in Africa to have escaped colonial rule, it fell victim to the Cold War scramble for Africa. It is this historical pe-

riod that Beneath the Lion’s Gaze examines, revealing the detrimental impact of communism to lives and businesses. During this time, tens of thousands of Ethiopian civilians died from guns supplied by Russia, while foreign advisers who “took up the best nationalised homes,” wreaked havoc on the economy. In the end, the junta exacerbated Ethiopia’s lot and oversaw a merciless political and economic climate that caused Ethiopians to, once again, fight for the soul of their country. DECEMBER-FEBRUARY

FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | FLIGHT INFO

Baggage Policy

SAFETY & LUGGAGE Ensuring your safe flight to & from the heart of Africa

Safety Your safety and comfort are important to us. Please watch the demonstration or the video of the emergency equipment before takeoff. For more information refer to the safety leaflet in the seat pocket in front of you.

Take-Off Immediately after takeoff the aircraft climbs very steeply. Shortly afterwards you will hear a reduction in the engine sound, but the aircraft will continue to climb. All aircraft cabins are pressurized. Due to change in pressure during takeoff and landing, some passengers may experience slight discomfort in the ear. Relieve this by swallowing, yawning or pinching the nostrils gently and breathing out whilst keeping lips sealed. Should you feel unwell at any time, please ask the cabin crew for assistance.

Landing After touch down, you may notice an increase in engine noise level due to the reverse thrust being applied to assist braking. Creating Rwanda’s Most Influential Private Sector led CEO Summit

T

he Rwanda CEO Summit was started last year by Karisimbi Business Partners with the aim of becoming the first private sector led gathering of Rwanda’s leading CEOs and MDs. To date, it has been attended by 250+ of Rwanda’s leading private sector firms and has represented over 16 industries including manufacturing, professional services, agriculture, and IT. This annual summit that started off as an idea over coffee has quickly garnished the support of Rwanda’s leading businesses, investors, and thought leaders. The morning long summit aims to go beyond previously diagnosed challenges faced by Rwandan firms, and spur meaningful dialogue and concrete action that help encourage new partnerships and develop Rwanda’s private sector. Over the past ten years, Karisimbi Business Partners has been invited to work with 150 firms and investors in Rwanda, assisting clients with strategic plans, financial modeling, operations, executive hiring and

investment preparations. During that time, they have been able to identify various cross-sector trends and challenges around organizational performance, strategic decision-making, and people management. In order to gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the factors that influence these challenges, every year Karisimbi Business Partners conducts surveys with 100+ Rwanda-based CEOs. Over the course of six months, the firm gathers, analyzes and finds insights into specific themes and challenges. The research findings are released at the summit making the event unique – the very findings are created by those who are attending. The summit has become an event that CEOs look forward to as it focuses on delivering value to the CEOs themselves. One of the major challenges that business leaders in Rwanda face is the lack of readily available, context specific market insights that are useful for the day to day business operations. The major takeaways from the

summit as expressed by various business leaders in attendance was a clearer picture of the collective challenges they face as a sector, and the practical solutions for addressing them. The Rwanda CEO Summit is the natural outcome of Rwanda’s strengthening private sector and Karisimbi Business Partner’s mission and vision, and further commitment and dedication to working alongside the companies that makes Rwanda what it is. Rwandan businesses are driving growth of key industries, expanding employment, transferring knowledge and contributing to the economic development of the country and region. This annual event is a touchpoint for Rwanda’s CEOs to be encouraged and to continue doing what they are already doing more effectively.
