From dream to reality: the museum that stands as a witness of genocide The latest of Rwandan Museums, is the first museum fully dedicated to the long road to end the Genocide Against the Tutsi. By Arnaud Nkusi Photo Source: https://www.flickr.com/photos/paulkagame/sets/72157663605398038

The museum is housed inside the Rwandan Parliament, in the heart of the capital city Kigali, exactly ten minutes away from the airport, ten minutes from the Genocide Memorial in Gisozi and a stone’s throw away from the Kigali Convention Centre. The site holds the proof for those who are too pragmatic and realistic to believe that a dream held dearly can become reality when one is willing and persistent. It all started with a strong desire to go back to the motherland for Rwandans who had to go in exile as early as 1959, then in 1963 and again in 1973. One, then two, then three ordinary people held this dream of going home and thought it possible through tenacity and hard work. They believed in it like no one ever did before and decided to work in preparation of the extent of the challenge that awaited. Then came a long struggle, not only a military one but also ideological, a tactical one with a clear vision of the objective in mind and how to reach it. Nothing is impossible to a valiant heart.

A cœur vaillant, rien d’impossible.

Natural storyteller The museum, aptly named Campaign Against Genocide Museum, is headed by Ambassador Robert Masozera, Director General of the Institute of Rwandan Museums, while Médart Bashana oversees the daily management. Barely a hundred days old, the museum is open seven days a week, twelve months a year, apart from the 7th April of each year, Genocide against the Tutsi Memorial Day. “The idea came after the Gisozi Memorial started operating; housing the most tragic part of the sombre history of the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994. It is around that time, in 2006, that the necessity of recounting the history of how the genocide came to be stopped became obvious”, Médart Bashana told us, a natural storyteller who has the ability to describe snippets of history as if they were unfolding as he speaks.

Enemy fire The 600 soldiers who escorted the officials of the Rwandan Patriotic Front, who had arrived in Kigali to sign the Arusha Agreements were the ones to first receive the order to get out of the Parliament and fight against enemy fire. Surprised by a level of violence they did not expect during a time of peace negotiations, they were called upon to defend themselves, and much beyond that. The task that awaited was manifold: to defend themselves but at the same time, rescue the civilian population who was being slaughtered within the capital city and around it.

Here lies the obvious reason why the Parliament was chosen to host the Campaign Against Genocide Museum. A beautiful and immense monument accurately depicts the situation in the gardens of the Parliament, a few meters away from the museum which recounts the history in more details; with pictures carefully displayed on the walls of the ten chambers which make up most of the exhibition.

The tour of the museum takes about one hour, and the entry fee is less than a dollar for students, 1.50$ for Rwandan citizens, around 3.00$ for citizens of the East African Community and the Great Lakes Region, and under 7.00$ for citizens of Africa and the rest of the world. With a certain pride in his voice, and a joyful look, Amb. Masozera recounts how the history of the museum is told by the living, the actors of the stories you’re told of on the premise. “This makes this museum a little more alive compared to the other seven spread across the country. It is what makes it authentic. Allow me to show you the interview of the President of the Republic, Paul Kagame, who played the role you are aware of in stopping the genocide. He inaugurated the Museum on 13th December of last year.”

Two hours upon entering the museum, I was escorted out by the director, with a grateful heart for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. I find myself surprised by a sudden bout of goose bumps as I listen to my host all the while nodding. We witness daily how Kigali lives on, grows every day, all the while, emotions remain intact, even a quarter of a century later.

Nigeria’s capital city of Abuja, located smack in the middle of the country, is home to Aso rock, a 1,300 foot monolith that lends its name to the president’s official residence, the National Mosque and the National Church; both representing the nation’s two largest faiths. With short rainy days, long dry spells and an average temperature of 35 degrees Celsius, Abuja is a catch for travellers looking for a short, sunny adventure. Prior to Abuja replacing Lagos as the capital in 1991, its approximately 8,000 sq km of land was a sparsely populated town of about 500,000 people. Today, Abuja is a metropolis with local and international restaurants, cafes, malls, hotels and a real estate market known for its imposing edifices and steep price tags. The headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States

(ECOWAS) and many multinationals are also located in Abija. International and domestic flights land in Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and, though Uber is available, local taxis are relatively inexpensive.

Picky eaters Start the day at one Abuja’s tourist-approved restaurants, The Charcoal Grill in Wuse II. Scrambled eggs, sunny side ups, paninis, waffles, fried yam and tomato stew are all on the menu, and with cuisines from Nigeria, Jamaica, Britain, India and then some, even the pickiest eater is guaranteed to come away satisfied.

Sprinkling Bee Light By Davy C. Ingabire | Photos by: Nathalie Neema Two ladies by the name of Nathalie, long-time friends and neighbours came together to create Bee Light, a one-of-akind Rwandan company that produces and distributes candles made of beeswax. ‘Art meets nature’ is the motto of this nascent company - barely a year old -which navigates between crafts, interior design and ecology. Nathalie Neema and Nathalie Tollenaere Tihon are a solid duo; the latter is the creative mind behind all the shapes of the Bee Light candles, and the former, trained in project management, deals with marketing and administrative matters. We visited the Bee Light workshop in the Kigali suburb of Kimihurura; while Nathalie, the artist, was moulding new products, Nathalie, the administrator, joined us for an interview.

Merci beaucoup! MARCH-MAY 2018 | 33

How did you come up with the name Bee Light? “Bee Light is self-explanatory, it is the light that comes from bees. It also signifies light, the opposite of heavy, if you enjoy play on words, which can point to the eco-friendly aspect of our candles, their smoke is not detrimental to the environment. Essentially, the name works on multiple levels. “

Beeswax candle smoke is eco-friendly and safe for people to inhale

Why should people use beeswax candles?

Comment avez-vous trouvé ce nom Bee Light?

“As I was saying, their smoke is eco-friendly and safe for people to inhale, contrary to regular paraffin candles that are most commonly used. Moreover, they last longer than other types of candles.”

MARCH-MAY 2018 | 37

FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | Destinations

What aspect of Bee Light are you most passionate about? “So many but to name just a few, the fact that everything is handmade down to the wax supplied by the beekeeper, to the fact that everything that is used in the process is sourced locally. Also, with beeswax the possibilities are endless because it can be moulded into any imaginable shape, and the range of colour varies since it depends on what the bees eat. Basically, beeswax candles are very convenient because they last longer, they are eco-friendly and aesthetically pleasing.”

What is your view on crafts in Rwanda? “I feel very positive about it, and with Bee Light, we want to make people aware that it is possible to produce high quality products without having to import materials especially those that can be found here. As for the rest, it is up to us to be creative enough to come up with exceptional products. Or as we say, turn a regular stone into a diamond.”

Kenya’s Menengai crater: Hiking with ghosts and demons By: Joseph Maina

A slightly cloudy morning in early January found me in Nakuru, a bustling former provincial capital and fourth largest town in Kenya. Here I was, after a two and a half hour road trip from the capital Nairobi, to take a hike into Menengai Crater, one of the country’s most eminent outdoor rendezvous. The crater lies within an expansive forest, about 10 kilometres from Nakuru town. I had read about Menengai’s allure as a hiker’s heaven, and also that it is the second most visited caldera in the world, but a more enthralling attraction was its much-fabled reputation as home to ghosts. Numerous tales of ghosts and demons tie into Menengai’s history. Songs have been sung, and locals talk in hushed tones about the alleged ghosts, whose list of mischief includes operating tractorfarmed tracts in the crater.

Caldera From the town centre, I ventured along the road leading into Milimani, an affluent suburb, and shortly afterwards found myself on a dusty stretch climbing up a rather steep hill. Along the route, just before hitting the bush, are offices of the Kenya Wildlife Service, where visitors pay a fee for entry. Having done that, I hit the road once more, going past dense bush on either side of the road, and a lofty mast belonging to the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, who chose this vantage point on account of its height. The road then meanders through small-scale farms briefly, before plunging into thick bush, and before long we catch ourselves facing a breathtaking expanse of wilderness down below.

People lose their way in this bush after jumping this plant. It leaves you confused as to your whereabouts.” At the main viewpoint, a couple of signboards offered helpful information. Menengai is in fact a caldera, at an elevation just under 3,000 metres and with a diameter spanning 12 kilometres. Equally helpful is an iconic structure showing distances from the crater to several parts of the world. I could see, for example, that I was 4,418 kilometres from Bombay, and 12,360 kilometres from New York. A group of curio shops lies overlooking the vast crater, at the edge of a small eucalyptus hedge. From this coign of vantage, could soak in the occasional breeze, which delightfully sweeps from deep down the crater, gracefully ruffling the tall blades of grass and bushes. One may also see tall pylons in the crater, arranged in a line, and clusters featuring brick-fenced units where electric power is generated, with an occasional plume of smoke rising. Dusty roads winding about the wilderness can be seen, connecting the power generation units.

Mau Mau caves I made quick friends with James Kinyanjui, a native of the region and curio seller in one of the stalls. A tour guide on the side, Kinyanjui explained some of the black spots in the crater as having resulted from fire, which ravages the crater in the drier months. Herdsmen freely delve into the bushes down to the crater’s floor, and footpaths can be seen. Human activity in the crater goes back many years, with the most notable forays tracing their way to the days of Kenya’s independence struggle in the 1950s. “Among the places we take visitors, is to the Mau Mau caves over there,” Kinyanjui informed me, pointing to a cluster of trees at the western edge of the crater where freedom fighters made their home. It takes an hour and a half to walk to the caves, Kinyanjui informed me.

Devil’s Hill But what about the infamous demons of Menengai, I asked him? “Well, there have been tales about ghosts living around here,” he said with a smile. “I cannot swear to have interacted with any ghost, personally, but I must say there have been some funny happenings in this area.” Kinyanjui then pointed to a barren patch within the crater’s floor. It was a greyish expanse of land, not more than three soccer stadiums, which oddly sticks out from the rest of the land. Nothing grows on this zone, and the neighboring community calls it the devil’s hill. Local yarns have it that demons plough this spot by tractor, and harvest the produce in an hour’s time.

It is also said that one particular plant in the crater throws people into a stupor whenever they go over it. “We have seen it for ourselves,” a group of curio sellers informed me. “People losing their way in this bush after jumping that plant. It leaves you confused as to your whereabouts.” I wound up my trip in high spirits, and left in deep contemplation over these strange tales, taking care not to jump over the strange plant.

Numerous tales of ghosts and demons tie into Menengai’s history. Songs have been sung, and locals talk in hushed tones about the alleged ghosts, whose list of mischief includes operating tractorfarmed tracts in the crater. 46

Joseph’s rhythmic movements narrate a story of struggle with disability and the pain in Parfaite’s voice is palpable. The performance ends with a triumphant Joseph hoisting himself up on to the reconstructed wheelchair. The crowd rises to their feet cheering and a few tear-streaked faces are visible. The performance is a tribute to the lives of the artists, both of whom experienced disability from childhood but overcame the limitations it imposed. Joseph and Parfaite were two of the artists that performed at this year’s East African Nights of Tolerance (EANT). The annual dance festival is organized by Amizero Dance Company and is one of Kigali’s most popular events. This year’s edition, the 6th instalment, involved collaboration with the British Council’s East Africa Arts programme to include disabled artists from Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.

Joseph, from Uganda, was not born disabled and lost the use of one his legs after a medical error. This was closely followed by the death of his father who found the stress of raising a disabled child too much. Joseph was immediately packed off to his grandmother who proved to be an eager and able caretaker. She later died leaving Joseph to fend for himself. Joseph describes the period after his grandmother’s death as one of great difficulty: “I saw how cruel the world was to us disabled people. I suffered so I decided to lend a hand to others like me because I saw nobody else doing that. But I first needed to inspire myself before inspiring others. You can’t give others a blessing if you don’t have one yourself.” Joseph decided to take up wheelchair racing and later became Uganda’s wheelchair champion. He used the platform this provided him for disability activism. He also began to dance, which he saw as an opportunity to further champion the cause of disabled people through performance.

Parfaite, from Rwanda, encountered a similar misfortune when she received poor treatment for a bout of measles which cost the effective use of both her legs. She discovered her talent as a singer and poet while in secondary school and started a professional career. She also managed to secure a place at the University of Rwanda showing her family and community that nothing was beyond her reach. “My family has seen…my accomplishments and they know what I want to achieve. They actually now see me as a person who is much better than many other people who are not disabled. They see me as a strong person,” she says with a look triumph on her face. As part of the British Council’s East Africa Arts programme, Joseph and Parfaite were able to participate in one of the region’s biggest dance festivals as well as a regional residency.

They engaged with artists from across the world including disability artists from the United Kingdom. The residency involved workshops and training for participants and created opportunities for collaboration between the artists. The flagship program also aims to raise awareness around disability in the arts in East Africa. Including disabled artists in the EANT festival was the first of such efforts and it provided a rare and significant platform for these artists to share their work. “There are very few platforms for us, and at times when we do step up to ask for the opportunity to perform at an event, the organizers ask us to pay a lot of money in order to be given time on stage,” Joseph explains. More than a billion people worldwide live with disability. According to the World Health Organization, 81 million of these people are in Africa, about 80% of which are unemployed owing to societal perceptions and stigma. This is also evident in the arts, in which

disability access to “mainstream art spaces is not readily available. There have been attempts to address some of this imbalance; for example, in the UK, Unlimited commissions work from disabled artists; and in Ethiopia the Guide to Accessible Addis Ababa attempts to map disability access across the city. However, there is still much to be done especially in Africa. Disability prejudice is still prevalent both at the national and societal level. Minimal efforts are made to include disabled people in various spaces including schools and public spaces. In the arts, the issue isn’t only access or inclusion; it is also about the way that disability is represented in the mainstream. The arts play a vital role in sensitisation and perception change. They also provide an avenue to

share experiences. The way narratives of disability are told influences our perception of disability and plays a role in empowering those whose stories are shared if done properly. Involving disabled artists in the telling of their stories ensures authenticity and allows us to encounter their work as artists in their own right. Many such as Joseph and Parfaite want audiences to respect their work and for it to be showcased on mainstream stages. Initiatives such as the British Council’s East Africa Arts programme facilitate this by fostering collaboration between abled and disabled artists and

Culture 101: Benin

By Trezer Oguda

Like most countries in West Africa, Benin’s flag consists of the vibrance of three colors; green, red, and yellow. The Green denotes hope for renewal, red stands for the ancestors’ courage, and yellow symbolizes the country’s treasures. The port city of Porto-Novo is Benin’s capital city, known for its architectural beauty and rich history. A total of fiftyfive languages are spoken in the country, with French being the official one. In August 2016, President Patrice Talon announced that fellow Africans would no longer need visas to visit the country. This is good news all around, as Africans now have a chance explore the rich history that Benin has to offer even as the African Union encourages the spirit of Pan-Africanism. In search of a little history of this club shaped country, your first stop should be the ruins of Abomey, the former capital of the Dahomey Empire, one of West Africa’s long-standing kingdoms. A tour will give you a glimpse into the kingdom that is said to have wielded the greatest power in the Western coast of Africa. The royal palaces are no longer inhabited and those of King Ghézo and King Glélé, two among the twelve kings who ruled

The Door of no Return Benin is one of only two countries in the world where Voodoo is the official religion – the other being Haiti. It was made official in the early 1990s. Don’t freak out now, it has nothing to do with the spooky needles and dolls scenes as seen in movies. Voodoo is more than a belief system, it is a complete way of life, including culture, philosophy, language, art, dance, music and medicine. There are voodoo souvenirs to be bought in markets across the country, including the Dankopta Fetish Market in Cotonou. Happy shopping! What’s more, there is public holiday, Voodoo Day, usually celebrated on the 10th of January, as well as a national Voodoo museum located in the city of Ouidah. Ouidah’s historical significance does not start and end with voodoo. Route d’Esclaves is a 4km sacred stretch where African slaves walked to the beaches from

Man must eat, so it is a good thing Benin is recognized all over Africa for its exotic dishes and its ingredients, which provide a unique taste. Their cuisine reflects several French influences following the century long occupation. The traditional meals are rich in rice, corn, beans, yams, cassava and millet accompanied by fish or chicken. As Benin is in an equatorial climate area the vegetation is abundant and their meals are heavy on vegetables. A platter of fruit salad consisting of mandarin oranges, bananas, kiwi, avocados, pineapples is usually served before the main meal.

One of the participants, Claude Nsanzimana, the a dentist at UR College of Medicine and Health Science s polyclinic said they are glad to have an opportunity to upgrade their knowledge in line with the new available digital technologies for better service delivery.

Traveler’s Diary: Your Seatmate, your in-flight entertainment Par Trezer Oguda

One of the best things about traveling is that you get to meet different people, network and build new, even meaningful relationships. We have all heard or know of couples who met on a flight and now live happily ever after; Or a business deal that was sealed mid-air. That’s all good, but what about when your seatmate or fellow passenger’s mannerisms border on funny or weird? I recently had quite an experience with a man from a country in West Africa. So tickled was I that I thought of asking our readers to send us some of their memorable stories. So smile and introduce yourself to your seatmate. You can use some of these stories as an ice-breaker. Have a good laugh. Be nice. This might be the start to a life-long friendship.

#1 Charlie Sheen I’m the weird seat mate in this story. It was a nine hour flight and I drunk pretty much the whole way. Those little bottles of whiskey just kept coming and for some reason no one was cutting me off. I have never been one to turn down a challenge so I kept a steady pace; Charlie Sheen would have been proud. Anyway, at one point I had to go to the bathroom way at the back of the plane and on my way back to my seat pretty much everyone seated on the isle was giving me dirty looks. It took a while to dawn on me those weren’t headrests I was holding on to to keep my balance on the way to and from the bathroom. Those were actual peoples heads. I still chuckle a little when I remember this story. Aaah, to be young. I promise I am reformed now.

#3 Lurking germs I know people have probably gotten used to seeing this but I just don’t get it. The hostess makes the announcement that food would be served in a bit. We are handed the sanitized towels to of course wipe our hands. Two gentlemen seated in front of me take the towels, wipe their bald heads and neck area to clear sweat and hand the towels back to the hostess. I was dumbfounded. I wanted to enjoy my food (which I must admit didn’t go down well) but I kept wondering if the towels really go through thorough sterilization. Makes you think about all the germs lurking around. Oh well...

#4 Believer Mine kept asking me where we were, mid air. He seemed to believe in me so much that I did not want to disappoint him, so I kept guessing until we got to our first stop, Entebbe. At least I got Entebbe right. The fifty-five minutes it took us from Nairobi to Entebbe was enough time to not only ask questions, but do so in French which I had indicated from the onset that I did not understand. Oh, should I also mention how he took more foodstuffs than he needed then offered them to me later? He seemed quite offended that I said no to everything, even the juice!

Following his Koranic studies, Dantala joins the gang of orphans and homeless boys his former instructor had criticized for not praying and visiting the mosque only on Fridays for free food. When the gang is hired by the Small Party to rig votes and intimidate members of the Big Party on the promise of building them a shelter, Dantala asks the gang’s leader if they’ll keep their word. “… all I want is that they pay every time they ask us to work for them. After the election, where will you see them?” he replies. On the gang leader’s command, the boys set the Big Party’s office on fire. With the police in pursuit, Dantala flees the village to the city of Sokoto, where he meets the moderate imam Sheikh Jamal and his ultraconservative deputy AbdulNur. Abdul-Nur promptly christens him Ahmad. “Dantala is not a name. To say that someone was born on a Tuesday, is that a name?” he asks rhetorically before placing a phone call to Dantala’s former instructor.

Dantala is not a name. To say that someone was born on a Tuesday, is that a name?

Satisfied with his testimonial, Sheik invites Dantala to work with them in the mosque. Friendship

Shortly after Dantala takes up residence on the mosque’s premises, Abdul Nur’s brother Jibril moves in. The pair become fast friends, with Jibril patiently helping Dantala learn English and Dantala teaching him Arabic. Adventurous by nature, Jibril circumvents strict religious observances, buying football newspapers, having premarital sex and committing other acts considered haram. His errant reputation would earn him severe beatings from Abdul-Nur and lend credence to Dantala’s lie about the ownership of the women’s magazine Sheikh finds in their bedroom. Dantala immediately regrets claiming it belonged to Jibril, more so when he later sees fresh wounds on his friend’s back. “It is OK,”Jibril says

without malice. “I already admitted the book is mine. He [Abdul-Nur] has beaten me already.” When gunmen target Sheikh, Dantala’s pleasantly stable life in Sokoto is violently upended. AbdulNur would blame Shiites for the attack, and ignoring Sheikh’s plea for peace, call on followers to retaliate. A riot ensues between Sunni and Shia Muslims and, in a bid to cool heads, Sheikh sends Abdul-Nur off to Saudi Arabia, a move that ultimately proves fatal.

Born on a Tuesday subtly and elegantly weaves themes of friendship, loyalty and betrayal. Also bigotry, both overt and otherwise, is highlighted. For instance, when Abdul-Nur founds of a radical Islamic sect that denounces Western education, Sheikh’s colleague chalks his betrayal up to ethnicity. “A Yoruba man is a Yoruba man. No

matter how Muslim they become. They stab you in the back.” Even the tolerant Sheik, supporter of girls’ education and women’s participation in elections, isn’t exempt as exemplified by his unflattering views on Shiite mode of worship and demands that followers vote a Muslim president. For him, religion trumps qualifications. Without being preachy, John’s novel mirrors some of the ills plaguing Nigeria to great effect, presenting a convincing picture of how poverty, corruption and brutality perpetrated by security forces breed disaffection and insurgent groups like Boko Haram, which continues to terrorise northeast Nigeria. Also, the author’s ability to breathe life in and inspire sympathy for his characters by way of contradictions and flaws help elevate his fiction closer to the truth.

AfricanPotters:

Humble With Hands Of Gold By: Cécile Ahmed Abdi

Lifestyle

When it comes to some parts of the world, we all have clichés stuck in our mind. The huge brick red pottery lining the roads is one of them: a reflection of traditional Africa. Every time I travel to the continent, it is bigger than me, I must look for potters. You might wonder why. Simply because in this fast-changing world, their permanence is fascinating to me, along with their movements repeated determinedly… The earth is all that is left to those who have nothing. In Africa this trade is too often left to the poor and the disadvantaged. Did they become marginalized because of their trade or did they turn to it because society was keeping them out? No one knows. What we do know is that after tireless fights to model the soil, they have developed incredible instincts with the elements. In Kigali, Rwanda, I found a group of potters at the bottom of a Kacyiru hill. There, they are organized in five cooperatives alongside the market sellers. Shabani Munyarukundo, the chairman of Potterie Moderne, modern pottery, introduced me to Emmanuel, one of their potters. He agreed to teach me the traditional ways of his country.

FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | Lifestyle

Extraction Extraction

The flame will reveal if the piece has been well made or not” 78

Rwanda is a volcanic country, so there is no shortage of clay (ibumba, in kinyarwanda). It can be found at the bottom of the hills, in the marshes. Once the clay is extracted, it is stored in a hole especially prepared for this purpose, where it is to be mixed with loam. To make the texture more appropriate, young people knead it with their feet and add sand (insibo) which will act as a degreasing agent when the clay is fired.

| INZOZI – RWANDAIR’S INFLIGHT MAGAZINE

Lifestyle

Shaping As it is often the case in Sub-Saharan Africa, the pots are coiled (imikarago). Here, there aren’t any electric lathe, maybe just the bottom part of a broken pot that is being spun, but always with unmatched dexterity; a firm and delicate hand adds the coil of clay to the main piece, then evens it out with a piece of plastic and cloth. The cow’s rib (urubavurw’inka) or the piece of calabash (inene) have now been replaced. What can I say? Times are changing.

Drying Years ago, potters used to create useful objects (utensils, containers for cooking, conserving or transporting food, etc.). Today the pieces are usually for decorative purposes (guca imanzy). Traditionally in Rwanda, the potter would roll a papyrus braid (urugenyo) on the top part of the pot, which would give it a rugged aspect, the smooth part was then coated in iron oxide to make it redder. Today the potters use all types of objects and even turn to the internet to find inspiration. Flared rim pots, pots with holes, pots with twists or knots, or with animals. Order away, your most creative wishes will come true!

Firing After several days of drying comes the fire test; the flame will reveal if the piece has been well made or not. In the African countryside, they are fired in a hole in the ground, but it is difficult to reach 800°C, the melting point which will petrify the clay. The Gatagara cooperative (on the road to Gitarama) works with enamel and goes beyond 1000°C. Those in Kacyiru, Kigali, prefer bare clay pottery fired in brick ovens.

Ancient craft Shabani taught me that the oven is loaded up to ten times a month! With their monopoly of the ceramic water filter market (KFC), they are now autonomous. Recently a foreigner wanted to buy the cooperative, but its more than fifty members refused. What would become of them? For some of the group members, pottery has been running in their family for generations, at least ten years for the chairman. However, he expressed regret that his own children are not following in his footsteps. With the tremendous modernisation that Rwanda is undergoing, is this craft destined to disappear? The craft has been documented as one of the most ancient in the country; vases dated 1,000 BC have been found.

MARCH-MAY 2018 | 79

FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | Lifestyle

I left the place full of admiration at the durability I witnessed. If Rwandan potters have been able to go through the centuries, one can only hope that they will be able to continue perpetuating the art and make it evolve aesthetically and technically. Who knows? Maybe one day clay will find its way in our lives and in our cities again.

Rosine Kamagaju: the guardian angel of autistic children in Rwanda By Davy C. Ingabire

The words of Roland Poupon: ‘In my infinite smallness, I am also the vastness of humanity’, embody Rosine Kamagaju to a tee, as she labours daily the challenge of giving hope to parents raising autistic children. Her walk down this path dates to twenty years ago when she arrived in France, and she was assigned to care for five autistic boys on her first job. She is now the director and founder of the Autism Rwanda centre. Rosine recalls how it was not easy in the beginning but overtime she became attached to them, sparking her interest in autism. “It (the experience) used to remind me of the children in my neighbourhood that families were hiding, and that people used to call nasty names. That is when I decided to study autism at university”. Ten years ago, the United Nations General Assembly established the 2nd April of each year as World Autism Awareness Day. A disability that affects about 1% of the world’s population, autism, also known as autistic disorder, or autism spectrum disorder, is often associated with learning difficulties with or without intellectual disability. “It is mainly characterized by three disorders:

RwandAir to start flights to Cape Town and Abuja RwandAir will soon commence flights to Abuja in Nigeria and Cape Town in South Africa. The Rwandan national carrier will operate four weekly flights from Kigali to Cape Town with a stopover in Harare. The Abuja flight will be tagged to the existing Accra route, where the flight will stop in Abuja before heading to Accra and it will also be operated four times a week. “This is yet another big milestone for RwandAir as we continue to expand our network. Our aim is to provide to our customers seamless and better connections on the continent and beyond. Abuja and Cape Town come in as a boost to the different economies in terms of tourism and trade on one hand, and enhance bilateral partnership between our countries on the other hand”, said Chance Ndagano Ag. CEO of RwandAir.

Commonly referred to as the Mother City, Cape Town is a port city on South Africa’s southwest coast, on a peninsula beneath the Table Mountain, one of the top tourist attractions of the city along with Cape Point, Cape of Good Hope and Robben Island. Built in 1980s, Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria and is the only city in Africa that was built solely for the purpose of being the capital city. Abuja’s top tourist attractions include Aso Rock, Gurara waterfalls, Millennium Park, National Ecumenical Center and the Abuja National Mosque to name but a few. The two new destinations will take RwandAir’s destinations to twenty-six (26).

communication disorder, social interaction disorder and behavioural disorder”, Rosine explains.

Denial In the early 2000s, Rosine came back to Rwanda and was contacted by MIDA Great Lakes, an organisation of Rwandans from the diaspora, to give training to social workers. That is when she came to face with the denial surrounding this disability, which affected several thousand people.

One of the hardest part of the work for Rosine is seeing children who cannot join the centre because of financial difficulties"

“I used to organise training sessions on how to take care of autistic people when I realized that it would be better to visit the existing structures to have a better understanding of the local reality. This is when I understood that not only were there no specialized centres, but also that autism wasn’t even talked about. It was at this point, following

advice from two friends, that the idea of the Autisme Rwanda centre was born.” Autisme Rwanda located in the suburb of Gisozi, in Kigali, is the first and only centre for autistic children in Rwanda and it operates like a specialized school for children between 2 and 15 years of age. “We work like any other school, children arrive in the morning and they leave in the evening. The school year also has holidays just like anywhere else. The difference lies in what we teach our students because their needs and aptitudes are different from other children’s”, explains one of the teachers at the centre.

Scholarships Currently, thirty-five children attend classes there, at the beginning there were only five. Caring for one child requires a lot of resources, therefore, the centre welcomes new children only when it can but Rosine foresees welcoming up to 120 children in the future. A goal she considers ambitious, but still believes in. Her perseverance has convinced benefactors to support her initiative, the latest being the writer and activist Immaculée Ilibagiza who, with her group Friends of Kibeho held a fundraising dinner for Autisme MARCH-MAY 2018 | 85

Rwanda. Proceeds from the event were for scholarships to support children from families that cannot afford the centre’s tuition fees. One of the hardest part of the work for Rosine is seeing children who cannot join the centre because of financial difficulties, thus, such initiatives from supporters are extremely appreciated. “We hope there will be more and more of them”, exclaims Rosine, who splits her time between Rwanda where she works and France where her family lives. The choice was not easy, but it was necessary. She stands strong in this daily battle thanks to the support of her family. “I have to carry on and I am delighted that my husband and my children stand with me in the process. We are heading in the right direction because parents are starting to understand what autism really is and are no longer sheltering their children who suffer from the disorder. But we still need more awareness and more structures. Autism is a reality that affects us all.”

Kigali Genocide Memorial spreads the value of Ubumuntu “A person who has Ubumuntu is someone who has greatness of heart. In the context of the Genocide against the Tutsi, Ubumuntu refers to those who selflessly risked their lives to rescue or help those who were persecuted. We can all be champions of humanity by standing against division wherever we live”. By: Davy-Carmel I. This paragraph is found on the tags of the Ubumuntu product range that are sold in the souvenir shop at the Memorial. This value is very close to the Rwandan people’s heart, and AEGIS Trust, the organization in charge of the Kigali Genocide Memorial on behalf of the National Commission for the Fight Against Genocide (CNLG) wants to showcase it. Today, Ubumuntu is a concept, a brand, and a message that people carry with them as they conclude their visit of the Memorial.

Remembrance The Memorial opened its doors in April 2004, for the 10th commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi and it is the final resting place of more than 250,000 victims of this tragedy in 1994. Located in the middle of the capital city of Rwanda, this public space is a place of remembrance but also a place to learn from the mistakes of the past and move forward with a promise: never again! It is in that sense that the concept of Ubumuntu emerged, to inspire all its visitors, from Rwanda and elsewhere, and all of those who come in contact with the work of the memorial, to aspire to uphold this value which drove the national heroes. This message of humanity is shared through various means: audiovisual productions, events and now Ubumuntu branded products, and soon an educational platform.

The Heart of Africa In 2013, a short film entitled Ubumuntu, made up of several stories of people who risked their lives to save others during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi was shown. In 2015, the annual Ubumuntu Arts festival was born, an initiative of the drama group and contemporary dance group Mashirika in collaboration with Kigali Genocide Memorial. Since 2016, exchange sessions have been organized on a regular basis, and various personalities have attended and shared their experience with students and other young people. Today, it is the Ubumuntu range of products that is launched on the market, made up of a variety of products: jewelry, decorative baskets, imigongo paintings, and very soon a clothing

line sporting the very carefully designed Ubumuntu logo. It is made up of rounded lines which remind us of the shape of Africa and that of a heart, a reference to Rwanda’s nickname, the heart of Africa. In addition to being a great way to support the Genocide against the Tutsi survivors and their families, which is one of the three main pillars of the Kigali Genocide Memorial (remembrance; learning and rebuilding lives), all of the products found in the Memorial gift shop (and very soon on many other sales platforms) have a very specific goal, which is to share the message of choosing the greatness of heart, humanity, positivity and Ubumuntu as a lifestyle. Par Davy-Carmel I.

“A person who has Ubumuntu is someone who has greatness of heart. In the context of the Genocide against the Tutsi, Ubumuntu refers to those who selflessly risked their lives to rescue or help those who were persecuted. We can all be champions of humanity by standing against division wherever we live” (« Une personne qui a l’Ubumuntu est celle qui a un grand coeur.

SEATING

The position of your seat can be adjusted by pressing the button located at the arm rest. For take-off and landing, all seats must be in the upright position.

SAFETY Your safety and comfort are important to us. Please watch the demonstration or the video of the emergency equipment before takeoff. For more information refer to the safety leaflet in the seat pocket in front of you.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Electronic Devices may not be used during taxing, takeoff, climbing, descent and landing. This includes laptop computers, remote-controlled games, radios, portable TVs and mobile phones, all of which may interfere with the safe operation of the aircraft.

TAKE-OFF

Immediately after takeoff the aircraft climbs very steeply. Shortly afterwards you will hear a reduction in the engine sound, but the aircraft will continue to climb. All aircraft cabins are pressurized. Due to change in pressure during takeoff and landing, some passengers may experience slight discomfort in the ear. Relieve this by swallowing, yawning or pinching the nostrils gently and breathing out whilst keeping lips sealed. Should you feel unwell at any time, please ask the cabin crew for assistance.

LANDING

After touch down, you may notice an increase in engine noise level due to the reverse thrust being applied to assist braking. Please remain seated until the engines have been switched off and the doors are opened. Before leaving the aircraft, ensure you have all your belongings with you. Always keep your belt fastened until the plane comes to a complete stop.

* Galaxy Note 7

not allowed onboard.

FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | Kids

THE GREAT FIST The Play Angel came into a nursery where four little children sat on the floor with sad and troubled faces. “What is the matter, dears?” asked the Play Angel. “We wanted to have a grand feast!” said the child whose nursery it was. “Yes, that would be delightful!” said the Play Angel. “But there is only one cookie!” said the child whose nursery it was. “And it is a very small cookie!” said the child who was a cousin, and therefore felt a right to speak. “Not big enough for myself!” said the child whose nursery it was. The other two children said nothing, because they were not relations; but they looked at the cookie with large eyes, and their mouths went up in the middle and down at the sides. “Well,” said the Play Angel, “suppose we have the feast just the same! I think we can manage it.”

She broke the cookie into four pieces, and gave one piece to the littlest child. “See!” she said. “This is a roast chicken, a Brown Bantam. It is just as brown and crispy as it can be, and there is cranberry sauce on one side, and on the other a little mountain of mashed potato; it must be a volcano, it smokes so. Do you see?” “Yes!” said the littlest one; and his mouth went down in the middle and up at the corners. The Play Angel gave a piece to the next child. “Here,” she said, “is a little pie! Outside, as you see, it is brown and crusty, with a wreath of pastry leaves round the edge and ‘For You’ in the middle; but inside it is all chicken and ham and jelly and hardboiled eggs. Did ever you see such a pie?” “Never I did!” said the child. “Now here,” said the Angel to the third child, “is a round cake. Look at it! the frosting is half an inch thick, with candied rose-leaves and angelica laid on in true-lovers’ knots; and inside there are chopped-up almonds, and raisins, and great slices of citron. It is the prettiest cake I ever saw, and the best.”

“So it is I did!” said the third child. Then the Angel gave the last piece to the child whose nursery it was. “My dear!” she said. “Just look! Here is an ice-cream rabbit. He is snow-white outside, with eyes of red barley sugar; see his ears, and his little snubby tail! but inside, I think you will find him pink. Now, when I clap my hands and count one, two, three, you must eat the feast all up. One—two—three!” So the children ate the feast all up. “There!” said the Angel. “Did ever you see such a grand feast?” “No, never we did!” said all the four children together. “And there are some crumbs left over,” said the Angel. “Come, and we will give them to the brother birds!” “But you didn’t have any!” said the child whose nursery it was. “Oh, yes!” said the Angel. “I had it all!” Every household needs a Play Angel, don’t you think? What would you ask yours to help you imagine?
