FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | WELCOME

Dear esteemed customer, I am thrilled to welcome you onboard RwandAir and humbled by your choice to fly with us. As you read the last Inzozi edition of 2017, I invite you to relax and enjoy our state-of-the-art inflight Wi-Fi and entertainment. For us at RwandAir, it is another opportunity to connect you closer to your loved ones across our destinations in Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. As I look back on 2017, I am pleased to say that it was quite an eventful year for RwandAir. The airline has made numerous accomplishments, to name but a few; this year RwandAir took delivery of its twelfth (12) aircraft, a dual-class Boeing 737-800NG equipped with inflight connectivity. The airline also launched flights to Harare and started its first long haul operations to Mumbai, London and Brussels. Another ground breaking milestone was the launch of our new hub in Cotonou, which was made possible by the seventh freedom rights

allowed RwandAir to offer new flights from Cotonou to the already existing destinations: Brazzaville, Libreville and Abidjan and later opened a new route to Dakar thus taking our destinations from nineteen (19) to twenty four (24). On behalf of RwandAir management and staff, I take this opportunity to thank you our esteemed customers, for your trust and confidence in our services as the above mentioned progress would not have been possible without your patronage. FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | WELCOME

Mail Box

WE'VE GOT MAIL Dear Sir/Madam,

Dear Brothers,

Dear Ibrahim

Recently I have had the pleasure to fly on your new A330-200 from Brussels to Kigali. What a great flight! I travelled Business class as, getting older, it is more difficult to fly Economy overnight! However I took time to look around the Premium Economy and Economy cabins and I was also impressed by them.

Few words to thanks the Kamembe station team, the pilots and Crew of the aircrafts of 02 and 07 October for availability, professionalism and assistance during our travel to Dubai. Myself and my wife passed a very good travel time. We appreciate your time to respond to our queries - in fact it was our first time to visit Dubai.

Thank you for providing solutions. The professionalism and friendly approach of RwandAir will hopefully see this airline grow as it deserves. I have flown extensively over the years and that includes many African airlines along with others such as Emirates, Virgin, KLM, BA and so on. I have yet to ever have cause to complain when travelling with RwandAir and have found the end to end services from booking to in flight to be exceptional. You are most welcome to quote that!

The standard of the aircraft and service on board was the best that I have come across in all my travels and, working Internationally, I have had the opportunity to travel with many airlines over the years. As there were three pilots on board the Captain (Dino I recall) came out to talk to passengers which was a nice touch. Your airline is a credit to your hard work in Rwanda. Be assured that I will spread the word in Europe about the excellent service you give and I hope to fly with you again soon.

All the best and God willing, in December with the family and myself in two weeks to resume my work. Best regards. Jean De Dieu Ntanga Ntita

Dear RwandAir, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your fantastic hospitality and care towards myself Ms Cherry Udeze and my travel partner Mrs Gillian Shiels. When our flight was cancelled on 26.9.17 due to adverse weather conditions from Kamembe to Kigali, your staff acted swiftly and promptly to ensure that we were accommodated overnight and the next day.

Again, thank you for assisting today, a great solution. Many thanks, enjoy your day. Steve Miller, Technical and Operations Manager. Superstar Forwarders Co.Ltd. Tanzania

I would like to highlight their professionalism in dealing with us. Please could you pass on our thanks to all involved at Kamembe airport?

Best Regards,

I certainly hope to travel again with your company in the near future.

SENEGAL,

A NATION THAT COMMANDS RESPECT Based in Kigali for almost twenty-five years, Senegalese-born Ndiao Diao is one of the most trusted jewellers in the Rwandan capital. Classy and cultivated, the fifty-year-old with a strong accent and a dark complexion, is a goldsmith. He enjoys talking about his home country to whomever is willing to listen, “It is a very supportive society, with a brotherly way of life, despite the eleven ethnic groups. It is one of the rare countries that practices cousinhood; what Senegal owes its peaceful environment to.” By | Par: Arnaud Nkusi

ith a very convinced look on his face Diao tells me how the two main religions; Islam (95%) and Christianity (5%) coexist peacefully, a fact that comes as a surprise to many. He believes that this state of mind needs to be preserved as it is a heritage from their ancestors. According to Diao, Islam plays a big part in those intrinsic values. He moves closer to me, and very proudly adds, “Leopold Sear Senghor was a Christian, and that was never an issue.” The Senegalese society is generally well educated, whether students attend traditional school or Koranic school. The notion of democracy, which includes universal values such as organizing elections in a timely fashion and in compliance with the provisions of the constitution, makes this nation one that commands respect. Given this situation, it seems only logical that the country has been experiencing economic development. The country has made serious progress in terms of attractiveness, which allowed its private investments to leap by 8% (from 1,539 billion CFA francs in 2014 to 1,659 billion in 2015) and its FDI (foreign direct investments) to surge by 17 percent.

Football is King

Senegal is a country that has managed to uphold many of its traditions; especially in sports, music and dance. Just like in the rest of the African continent, football is King, while the traditional Senegalese wrestling is currently very trendy. The latter has experienced tremendous growth over the past few years, especially economically; its share reaching 120 million CFA Francs in the last two years. The king of the ring, Yékini, has also been the African Champion for a while now. He took the crown from Mohamed Ndao back in 2005, who held it for more than four years.

What would Senegal be without music? The answer lies in the very rich cultural and musical heritage of the country, which spreads far beyond the national borders. These incredible artists of international recognition go by the names Youssou N’dour, Ismaël Lô, Viviane N’dour,

It’s in his nature to be a kind and caring individual. Remarkably, he is one of few artists of his calibre to maintain good relationships with peers from the industry.”

When talking about Senegal, one cannot forget to mention the touristic sites, including the mustsee Lac Rose (pink lake); a wide shallow lagoon, of 3 kilometres square, surrounded by dunes. Located a few hundred meters away from the North-Eastern part of the capital, the pink lake owes its colour to a cyanobacteria; a microscopic organism which fabricates a red pigment, especially when the dry wind blows, to resist against the salt concentration.

Speaking of bodies of water, let’s talk about a beauty by the name of Saly Portudal; a seaside resort located on Petite-Côte (the small coast) to the South of Dakar, 14 meters above sea level. Slave Trade The island of Gorée in Senegal owes its fame to its tragic history during the slave trade. Two years ago, the country started to honour the memory of its ancestors, victims of the slave trade and slavery by organizing a day of resistance. In 2010, during Senegal’s fiftieth anniversary of independence, the nation declared slavery and slave trade ’crimes against humanity’, favouring a duty of remembrance for the future generations over any financial compensation. No compensation could repair the extent of the damage from these crimes perpetrated over centuries. DECEMBER-FEBRUARY 2018 | 23

FLY THE DREAM OF AFRICA | DESTINATIONS

The sanctuary is built on the site of a former Lebous cemetery (Muslim), chosen then by Monseigneur Hyacinthe-Joseph Jalabert, eleventh Vicar Apostolic of Senegambia so that the dead from Africa could be symbolically honoured and brought together. It is also where the funeral the former president Léopold Sedar Senghor took place in 2001. No one likes to get the ending of a movie spoiled, and rightly so. Therefore, I invite you to continue to discover the rest of this beautiful country through your own adventures. Senegal has opened its border to the world and wants to bring the world to it. These few lines are all but a teaser to encourage you to go and see for yourself.

Chocolate Point, Photos by: Philippe Nyirimihigo

Christmas time conjures up images such as the nativity, family, celebration, Santa and of course, presents. Some would have it that the ultimate gift for the occasion is chocolate. This morsel of paradise often exchanged as a token of affection has become over a few decades - thanks to globalisation - indispensable whatever the occasion may be (birthdays, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter, etc.) During the Christmas season, tradition calls to offer chocolate truffles to loved ones, however, there are no set rules against gifting a different type of chocolate product to your dearest ones. This year, Kigali just so happens to have a large variety to choose from, as a new chocolate maker is in town! Eric Alles just opened Chocolate Point, which offers a wide range of chocolates and chocolate-based products. We tasted them, and our verdict is in: a pure Made in Rwanda delight. Eric Alles is a master chocolatier. He pursued his studies in chocolatemaking while working in a Communication Agency in Belgium. In mid-2017, Eric left it all behind, including his family and career and moved home to Rwanda, in pursuit of his true passion, chocolate-making. Having acquired knowledge in an area he was passionate about, Eric felt this new undertaking would be a good contribution to the country’s business landscape. Through his venture, he aspires to satisfy chocolate lovers in Rwanda and he has found an original way to seek out the country’s cocoa paste addicts; weekly pop-up sales in Kibagabaga, in one of the busiest restaurants of Kigali. Being a new player on the scene, he had to devise a good way to expose himself to a wide audience and build a strong customer base; all great starting points for a new

Ingredients locaux

For Eric, using local ingredients is paramount. He shares proudly, “every ingredient I use is locally sourced except for the cocoa which I import, as it is not produced in Rwanda. Not only is it important to contribute to the national economy but also, the flavour of ingredients in Rwanda is different, this makes my products richer. I also try to adapt to the local preference, I listen to my customers’ opinions and make sure I take them into account for subsequent batches.”

as he looks for an appropriate place to set up his chocolate factory. A shop where customers will be able to buy the chocolate goodies and sit down to savour them in good company. In the meantime, he continues to produce for retailers and works on custom orders. For the Rwandan chocolate maker, who wants to ‘bring a little extra’ to the local chocolate industry, the holiday season is timely, because his collection of products is fit for any occasion. According to Eric, “there are endless possibilities when it comes to chocolate; it can be made into many different things. Whether you like hard chocolate (dark or white), chocolatey desserts, ice cream, hot or cold drinks, there is something to suit everyone’s palate. Chocolate is something that people love and it makes them happy, it really is the perfect gift.” All this sounds mouth-watering, doesn’t it? Happy holidays!

New Year’s Resolutions By | Par Trezer Oguda

It is that time of the year again and we are busy making new year resolutions. Again. Almost guaranteed to make it on the list for most us are: weight loss, financial stability, wholesome relationships and generally a better and happier well-being. The optimism and excitement that accompanies the listing is always infectious and inspiring. Individuals tap into the offer of a fresh start, a clean slate on which to rewrite status quo. It is all good, until we reach six, seven months down the line and realize we have not made significant steps in attaining the targets we set for ourselves. I already have quite an elaborate list myself. One of my new year resolutions is to travel more. A while back, I took a 24-hour bus ride from Nairobi to Kigali and was amazed at the rich experience of nature, food and culture I had during the week-long journey. Traveling exposes one to the possibilities of a whole unexplored world, just waiting for you, your bag pack and a compass; well, that is if you don’t fancy the adventure of getting lost and discovering some hidden treasures.

Itchy feet

Wanderlust describes a deep uncontrollable desire to hit the road and travel, by whatever means of choice, to explore and enjoy the world which can be triggered by just about anything. Bonnita Aluoch, an avid traveller, travel writer and a hobbyist photographer narrates how it all began for her; “I have always had itchy feet. However, in 2015, my mum passed away and I took to travel as therapy. Since then, I am usually away most weekends and public holidays. Travel is an addiction that can only be cured by more travel.” A research by Cornell University concluded that traveling makes one happier than any material possession could ever do. As soon as something we have bought becomes ordinary and unexciting, the level of life satisfaction we feel drops and we are forced to look around for the next purchase. This process gets repeated over and over. Material possessions tend to lose value over time and must be upgraded whilst the thrill that exploration of new places brings can remain with you longer.

Get out there, spend your money on unforgettable experiences, see and get in touch with nature, try out new sports, make new friends. In short, live life! Happy 2018!

HOW TO GET STARTED ON YOUR TRAVEL PLANS

1.

At the mere mention of travel, most people picture flights and exotic lands when in fact, it does not have to be the case. Conquering the world requires one to at least conquer their home first. Have you visited every town and city in your own country? Are you remotely aware of the sites and hidden treasures available? Discover them. You will be surprised at what you have been missing out on. While you are at it, jot down a list of the places you have always wanted to visit, even if you can’t afford to yet. Who knows, the universe might conspire and make your dreams come true.

» Ibn Battuta

Start small.

2.

Make cents and sense of it all.

Oh money! If only we ever had enough. One important advice to make your wanderlust agenda come to life is to intentionally budget and set aside money for it. Again, start small. Take advantage of the deals that tour operators offer for domestic and international getaways. If you have friends or acquaintances in other countries, you can request for accommodation favours. Always be on the lookout for opportunities to slice the budget, of course without compromising the fun factor of your trip. Ms. Bonnita shares the following advice, “Book your flights as early as possible. Most cost half or lower during off-peak months and seasons. Look for hotel deals online; sites such as booking.com often have great deals. Camping will cost you anything between $5 to $15 per night in most areas with tented camps, parks and conservancies. In short, you don’t have to break the bank to feed your travel cravings.” DECEMBER-FEBRUARY 2018 | 41

TV personality and fashion enthusiast Davy-Carmel Ingabire, launched his new clothing line DavyK with a fashion show entitled ROOM, making the brand the latest addition to a budding collection of Made in Rwanda garments. Ingabire explains that the mixing and matching of fabric and textures is at the core of the DavyK collection. The contrast created by the different fabric creates a certain beauty which he refers to as the ‘epitome of cool.’ Through the DavyK collection, fashion lovers can expect to see a mix of kitenge and leather on a jacket and shirts donning a mix of cotton and denim, among other styles. The stage was set right from the venue’s entrance; models were standing motionless on subtly lit stands among the guests, and on a screen, the images of the clothes designed by DavyK were displayed. ROOM fashion show revealed a brand that is streetwear, with a touch of retro and avant-garde spirit. At first glance, it appeared as though the line was exclusively for men but once in a while garments for women and children also appeared on-screen. Throughout the evening, the collection was showcased mixed in with videos of the artistic director of DavyK, explaining the journey that led to the creation of the clothing line. Men’s styles dominated the show but among the few women pieces, ladies of all sizes

Davy-Carmel Ingabire is best known as a TV personality; host of the weekly show “Le Mirroir” on Rwanda’s national television but he is also a big fashion enthusiast. At the tender age of 17, he launched into the industry as a model with a sole goal in mind: to launch his own brand.

"I answered a call for models that I had heard on the radio by chance with the objective to meet designers and other industry players. In my head, the transaction would be quick; I would present my drawings and instantly land a gig. Of course, the reality was completely different, the fashion world was indeed cruel and at the time, it was crazy to even think that one could make a career out of it. I was met with such cold reactions that I almost gave up several times. Thankfully, I carried on as a model, which allowed me to better understand the world of fashion. Ten years later, here I am finally, in the starting blocks,” recounts Davy-Carmel Ingabire in one of his videos projected during the show.

After the show, we caught up with Ingabire where he told us more about the spirit of the DavyK brand, the inspiration behind the collection and other interesting bits. Congratulations. Tell us a bit more about your collection. While working on this collection, I followed a single guideline: make DavyK’s spirit come alive. This spirit is about offering a cool, easy to wear, urban, contemporary and pioneer look, while showing that comfort does not have to be compromised. In this inaugural show, we had to showcase the brand’s DNA, which is a mix of material, because I really am amazed at the beauty diversity can create, which we also tried to reveal with our choice of models. In the end, I applied this same idea to the garment; they can be worn on various occasions (at work, during the weekend, at a party or for an official ceremony, and so on).

How did you come up with the event name “ROOM”? As a child, I was timid and I grew up surrounded by a big family, many friends and neighbours -just like in most African homes- which meant that finding a moment alone was not easy. To cope, I created a room in my head where I would seek refuge every time I needed to escape my reality. It is in that room that I learned to dream and shoot for the moon. It was a place where my spirit felt free, where I could be myself; far away from the pressure of society. I gravitate to that same room every time I feel the creative bug itching. In short, the show name ROOM is a tribute to the dreamer in me.

How are you feeling after hosting your first fashion show? I am so full of gratitude, it is hard to put into words. It doesn’t seem real! The road that led to this moment was long, yet it is only the beginning. It is also the most decisive moment for what is to come.

In one of the videos aired during the show, you talked about how internet played a pivotal role in helping you understand the world of fashion, could you elaborate on that point? Internet has been and still is a faithful companion in my ongoing training in this industry. My belief is that internet is an endless resource when put to good use. For example, I attended an online course on fashion brand management at Bocconi, a renowned Italian university in the world of fashion. The training was an enriching experience conducted online and one that would have been otherwise hard to come by in this region. I also followed online sewing tutorials so that I could master the language of my tailors to make the drawings come to life. Moreover, I mainly sell my items through social networks, which have become the biggest market in the world.

What’s next for DavyK? It is only the beginning, so brace yourselves, I am about to fill your closets with DavyK garments (laughs).

History was one of my favourite subjects in high school. There was certainly a lot of dictation and tedious note taking, but there was also a good amount of storytelling which made the former quite bearable. I remember learning about African heroes who fought for independence from colonial rule, studying maps and tracking regional trade routes and marvelling at the abundance of gold in some states which made them quite powerful. Even more exciting were the times we learned about places like Timbuktu in Mali, finally feeling qualified enough to use the phrase “...from here to Timbuktu and back,” symbolic of a long journey. Between the 13th and 16th centuries, the Mali Empire controlled all the salt and gold trade in Africa. These were undoubtedly the most precious commodities. My mind would wander and travel with the traders on camel backs through the hostile Sahara Desert, imagining what it felt like to be wealthy and powerful. Subsequently, the empire’s dominance of the transSaharan trade routes helped to keep it in power. Today, this West African country may be a pale shadow of its former self in trade, economics and tourism, but the diverse cultures of her people are still as rich as the cotton it produces. That comfortable shirt or dress you have on might have its roots in Mali, as it is the second largest producer of cotton in Africa.

Cult secrets Mali’s Dogon people hold the Guinness World Record of the longest religious ceremony. Every 60 years or so - on a schedule determined by the position of the star Sirius in the night sky the Dogon peoples of Mali celebrate the Sigui, a mask festival which acknowledges the handing over of the cult’s secrets from one generation to the next. The ceremony takes many years to complete - the last Sigui ran from 1967 to 1973, with the next due to begin in 2032 - as the men-only initiates must learn a secret language (“Sigi So”) and carve a Great Mask, several metres in length. Each initiate wears his own mask and performs in a time-consuming procession of dances from village to village. The whole procession is organized by the Secret Society of Sigui. Its members, the Oloubarou, are greatly feared by other Dogons. This example from the Dogons gives a glimpse into the Malian oral literature, largely lauded as rich, varied and well researched. Sunjata Keita founded the Empire and ruled for many years. To date, he is fondly referred to as “The Lion King of Mali.” Speaking of Keitas and greatness, Afro - pop singer and songwriter, Salif Keita is arguably one of the best musicians to hail from Mali. A descendant of Sunjata Keita, Salif was born an albino and has had to overcome a great deal of challenges to rise to the legendary status he now holds. His music is celebrated the world over, which comes as no surprise owing to his golden voice and powerful lyrics. Music is as relevant today as it was in back then when griots or jalis performed songs for kings and nobles. Musicians still feature the djembe and kora, traditional instruments that add that special touch of authenticity to modern music.

Medieval shrines Mali boasts some of the world’s most fascinating architectural traditions and historic sites. However, some of these sites suffered destruction when war broke out in the northern region around May 2012. The International Monument Fund reports that since being placed in the World Monuments Watch in 2014, they committed to advocating for the protection of the country’s many significant sites, and raised a call for action by the global community. Today, 14 medieval shrines dedicated to Muslim saints stand complete, ready for tourists’ viewing pleasure. So next time you find yourself in this part of the world, be sure to visit Djenné’s Great Mosque, the world’s biggest building made entirely of mud brick as well as the cliffs of Bandiagara in Mopti, whose Dogon people have successfully preserved for centuries. In partnership with Winnaz, RwandAir now serves potato crisps onboard machinery for the production process from Europe to Rwanda. Joop has experience in marketing and sales and is involved in new business like Uganda, Congo DRC, Kenya and Tanzania. Potato farmers Hollanda Fairfoods sources their potatoes from three potato cooperatives located near the factory. Farmers visit the factory on a regular basis to understand the requirements and socialize with the team of the factory. All the suppliers are part of the Winnaz Family, and with this culture of visiting and training, HFF can offer you the best crisps of Africa!

Egide produces Winnaz crisps and Nicole sells them. At Hollanda Fairfoods (HFF), we provide worldclass potato crisps to satisfy the appetite of East African snack eaters. As Rwanda’s first commercial potato crisps company, we are constantly exploring new ways to reach the growing East African market. Our brand name is WINNAZ (relating to Winners). Winnaz potato crisps are made of Kinigi potatoes, sunflower oil and special selected seasoning. Winnaz is available in Original, Salt & Vinegar and Paprika flavours in 40 and 150 gram bags. “HFF has built strong relationships with potato farmer in the Musanze area,” said Egide Niyibizi, the 27 years old HFF Production Manager in Rwanda. This is done by providing trainings about good agriculture practices related to growing potatoes, selecting which varieties are suitable for crisp processing. HFF also give to the farmers contracts for a continuous supply of quality potatoes at a fair price”. After buying quality potatoes (Kinigi variety), we keep them in our stores. After that, we move them from the stores when we start the production process. The first step of this process is washing; raw potatoes are prewashed and soil and stones are removed to prevent damage to the processing equipment. The second step is peeling and cutting the potatoes into thin slices of 1.7-1.85mm. After this, the sliced potatoes are fried up to the right level of crunchiness and their quality is checked.

58

| INZOZI – RWANDAIR’S INFLIGHT MAGAZINE

For our flavored crisps, seasoning is added once the crisps are fried and their quality is checked. The last step of the production process is weighing and packing the crisps using a different color of packaging for every flavor. We run our production plant in Musanze with a team of 22 well-trained and motivated employees. From 2015, Nicole was fortunate to be part of the Hollanda Fairfoods Team (HFF) as Commercial Manager in Rwanda. HFF has built strong relationships with supermarkets in Rwanda. With our sales team, we cover the whole country (4 Provinces and the City of Kigali). Our distribution is done regularly both in Kigali and outside of Kigali. Regarding our marketing strategies we started by focusing on billboards and roadsters, but we have now moved on to creating visibility through online marketing, social media and special events, targeting specific audiences, which has been very successful. Besides the Rwandan market, Winnaz is also exported in the neighbouring countries. At this moment, Kampala in Uganda is seen as a strong market for HF and we are exploring the market in Goma, DRC. “The expansion of our business is an exciting journey, which I am proud to be part of,” said Nicole Muhimpundu, the 25 years old Commercial Manager at HFF. The potato farmers learn special techniques to grow the right size and also the right drymatter and best taste. The farmers keep the potatoes longer in the field than usual, and therefore they receive a higher price for their potatoes. We also advise to take rotation serious, this has positive impact on the soil quality that in the future will give better yields for the farmers, more income, and more food security. Some of our farmers already improved their livelihood by sending their children to universities, or farmers build their first potato store. Potato farmers were used to an informal market where they do not know the price and they do not know their market. Hollanda Fairfoods has changed this completely by offering them both. Thanks to you, all passengers of RwandAir! Because of you, we are able to source more potatoes, train more farmers and improve their livelihoods. By eating our crisps onboard RwandAir you do not only enjoy the quality, but also you help us improving the livelihoods of our farmers. THE HORROR OF MISSED FLIGHTS Missing a flight can be quite disorienting, not to mention the unbudgeted financial implications. One of our readers Vella Kwamboka, narrated to Trezer Oguda her on edge experience trying to make it for her debut flight. By | Par: Trezer Oguda I was scheduled to fly out of the country for a four-day conference in Chester, UK. It was going to be my first flight too, so you can imagine my anticipation. My flight was late in the night so I concluded I had enough time to swing by town first thing in the morning, buy some travel essentials, stop by the office to send a few emails, then rush home and pack before heading to the airport. Little did I know how long that day was going to be! Looking back, I wonder, what was I thinking?! As scheduled, I got through my errands in town without a hitch. With the excitement brewing up inside of me – I was going to fly out of my country for the first time! - I swiftly set out to tackle the rest of my to-do list. The early evening drizzle should have been the first sign that all the drama I had escaped the first half of the year would catch up to me; yet at this point, nothing was going

60

to dampen my mood. Nothing! The office was located near the main road in Karen estate in Nairobi, so once I finished with the emails, I called my usual pikipiki (motorcycle) guy who was to drop me at the Rongai bus stop, where I would board a matatu home. Halfway through, the heavens opened so much so that we had to seek shelter at a petrol station and wait it out. I began to panic. It was now almost 5pm. As the saying goes, desperate times call for desperate measures. With no reasonable way out, I started flagging down cars like a windsock responding to violent winds. One finally stopped and I jumped in praying that the good Samaritan wouldn’t turn on me. He dropped me off at the bus stop where I found a human traffic of unbelievable proportions; I immediately knew that I would again have to drop my manners and fight my way into a matatu. Dignity had gone flying out of the window, so when I spotted a matatu slowing down to let someone off, I rushed and pushed my way into it. We drove off and joined the seemingly hundreds of cars forming the snaking monster that is rush hour traffic. My freshly permed hair was, at this point, completely soaked. Traffic moved at a snail’s pace, a huge contrast from my everincreasing levels of exasperation and anxiety. By the time I got home, I was drenched and exhausted. I hurried to my bedroom and threw some clothes from the wardrobe to the suitcase without looking. To this date, it amazes me that I had packed

airlines may be willing to waive change fees and other additional charges. This is called the “flat tire rule”, and it’s worth politely trying to invoke it.

3. Don’t just book a new one-way ticket. It can be tempting to scrap the original plan in favor of Plan B— especially if buying a new ticket looks to be cheaper than paying the change fee. But be warned: in many cases, buying a new oneway ticket cancels the rest of your itinerary. So, unless you have just one more direct flight between you and home, buying a one-way ticket is probably not a smart idea.

4. Address connecting flights. If missing your first flight will cause you to also miss a connection, notify the gate agent or phone operator of your predicament so they can help you plan accordingly. If you made the first flight but missed the connecting flight, then most airlines will make you a standby on the next available flight. In this situation, it’s critical that you call ahead to the airline (or airport’s baggage claim) so they can store any checked bags until you’re able to pick them up. (And in the future, consider packing all your gear in a carry-on so you never again have to worry about getting separated from your baggage.)

5. Notify your hotel. If missing your flight will also cause you to miss a hotel reservation, then notify the hotel as early as possible. Doing so will help you avoid additional fees and will spare you the anger of ground transportation employees who would otherwise be waiting for you outside the airport.

6. Check your insurance policy. Some insurance companies will allow you to recoup some or all your expenses that arise from missing a flight—provided you can prove that it wasn’t your fault. Read your policy’s fine print, and, if this applies to you, do what you can to obtain written confirmation that the incident that caused you to miss your flight was caused by circumstances beyond your control.

7. Keep your cool As much as you can, try to keep things in perspective. Missing a flight is a giant hassle, yes. But it’s not the end of the world. And if your new flight doesn’t leave for another day or two? Then that just means you have more time to go exploring. If you’re stuck in, say, Bali or Madrid, is that really such a bad thing? Travel is all about adventuring—and that includes the journey as much as the destination.

In the wake of the ever increasing urbanization of Africa’s cities, more has to be done to protect the environment. The protection of the ecosystems in which we, humans, live is becoming more urgent as rapid development and industrialization is ceaselessly leading to degradation and pollution. Yet, people will always need shelter and better still affordable housing. It appears that ‘green is becoming the new normal.’ The various steps toward achieving green economies, spaces and cities has led construction industries and development policies to aim for a greener approach to shelter.

Eco-housing provides a solution to the challenges of urbanization and crowded cities. With it also comes affordability due to ease of access to of the properties, Please contact: construction resources and material for great functional design and architectural aesthetics.

Butaro Hospital Wikipedia

The argument that the suburbanization of rural communities would empower more youth to remain in their townships has a lot to do with the collaboration of development companies. As they pick up the message of sustainability, investment in sustainable eco-housing architecture will lead to long and medium, rather than short-term returns. It therefore makes great business sense to use easily accessible resources in addition to investing in sustainable eco-housing for Africa’s cities to thrive, starting with home, in Rwanda.

Empowering citizens

These types of eco-architecture are all not millionaire mansions and cribs tucked away at secluded private locations. In Rwanda, they are mostly community facilities set up to empower the daily citizen. Examples are hospitals like Butaro Hospital in Burera

| INZOZI – RWANDAIR’S INFLIGHT MAGAZINE

District, Partners In Health (PIH)’s lowcost houses in Rwinkwavu, the Women Opportunity Center in Kayonza and the Bisate Lodge in Musanze are but a few of eco-housing at its best. And because most African countries are agricultural-based with more than 70% of their populations living in rural areas, there is a lot to benefit from crop management. Instead of wheat, rice and coffee farmers burning their crop residues after tilling the land, these can be sorted and upcycled to make straw bricks for construction. They can sell to recycling companies, make money off their crop residue on top of their harvested crops and at the same time prevent carbon emissions that affects the environment as a result of large scale burning.

Less carbon emissions

Additionally, the ever increasing challenges brought about by climate change, requires that major adjustments are made for the future of the planet. Having less carbon emissions means that those who trade on the carbon market, would work hand-in-hand with the most affected in developing communities. Rather than importing all sorts of construction material at hefty costs and using nonbiodegradable fossil fuels, they would greatly reduce building costs with easily accessible and environmentally friendly resources. It’s a win-win for the carbon traders, eco-housing companies as well as their clients. For eco-housing to succeed, more youth would need to be involved. This means that while they would rather migrate to major cities to look for work, more jobs would be created with the boom in the eco-construction sector. "In Rwanda, eco-architecture houses are mostly community facilities set up to empower the daily citizen" financial management. The country’s workforce would be more productive if they did not spend more than half of their salaries or business profits on renting spaces. Eco-housing would lower housing costs, and more people would focus on productivity in their workplaces and businesses which in turn boosts the economy. By inspiring more Africans to invest in green initiatives, also goes beyond housing. It frees up more land space for the establishment of public spaces for relaxation, sports and entertainment. This holistic approach to development keeps in mind the health and wellness of the workforce and the environment. Therefore, as ‘green’ becomes the new normal, eco-housing is one path that will change the way our societies evolve in ways that have never been imagined before.

The artist trekked to see the endangered gorillas and visited Iby’iwacu Cultural Village -

home to park guides, traditional dancers and poachers-turnedconservationists. After the tour, ROA rolled up his sleeves and did what he does best. He created portraits of three animals, representing three of Rwanda’s wilderness areas: a regal sunbird from Nyungwe National Park, a gorilla from Volcanoes National Park and a black rhino from Akagera National Park.

Gigantic Gorilla A heartfelt dedication from ROA to Volcanoes National Park, his first mural was a fierce (and gigantic) face of a Rwandan silverback gorilla. In exquisite detail, he brought to life the park’s treasure. The piece was created to recognise the remarkable rebound of this nearly extinct species and encourage communities and visitors to continue the journey of conservation.

Stunning Regal Sunbird In celebration of Nyungwe National Park, a birder’s paradise, ROA painted an epic regal sunbird. With its long beak pecking to the left, the black-and-white artwork represents one of the more than 300 species of feathered friends found in Central Africa’s oldest mountain rainforest. The mural will stay in Musanze, inviting tourists to explore natural wonders all across the country.

Restless Rhino ROA also produced an impressive portrait of one of Rwanda’s newest citizens - an Eastern black rhino. Eighteen of the rhinos were reintroduced from South Africa in May, making Rwanda a Big Five nation again. The mural reflects the character of these impressive yet sadly endangered animals: restless, wild, and mighty. Its horn pokes upward as if ready to face the world. With the return of the rhino, Akagera National Park is home to one of the world’s most remarkable animals once more.

ROA’s visit was made possible by Kurema, Kureba, Kwiga, and with support from the Rwanda Development Board, the Embassy of Belgium, the Goethe-Institute, Rwanda Mountain Tea, and the French Institute. Visit www.facebook.com/ KuremaKurebaKwiga/ to learn more about their work.

Okapi Mural ROA’s globally recognised street art was unleashed in Kigali at the historic Okapi Hotel. On the first day, he delineated the shape of his quarry without leaving a clue to what it would turn out to be. Spectators took bets: A giraffe? A hyena? A dinosaur? The mystery stayed unsolved until the next day when he begun to connect the dots As the masterpiece came together, a crowd gathered on the sidewalk and watched in awe, admiring his incredible skills. Finally, two and half days later, the animal revealed itself. It was none other than an okapi - an animal often called the African unicorn and endemic to the area surrounding the Virunga massif. Besides adorning a building in one of Kigali’s busiest city streets, ROA’s mural stresses the need for coexistence. For endangered species like the okapi, we’re reminded that these animals might have once inhabited the areas we now call home. The message is clear: protection of our natural heritage is a moral duty. Local resident Emmanuel believes the okapi mural encourages all of us to think about the plight of wildlife: “It’s my first time to see this and I’m so happy. The city needs more of these paintings. They’re beautiful and worth admiring,” he said. “The artist shows the true beauty of animals. We should love them the same.”

Shy Elephant Shrew The project wrapped up in the bustling suburb of Nyamirambo as ROA painted one of the world’s cutest animals - an elephant shrew. He drew this insecteating mammal, which is endemic to East Africa, as a reminder of its near threatened status - a result of human activities that are destroying its home. The crowd looked on as his hands moved to paint its furry tail, shook spray cans to color the belly, and shape a perfect trunk-like nose.

A Powerful Message ROA has created hundreds of murals around the world, including in London, New York, Berlin, Sydney, Cape Town and many more cities. Now, Kigali has joined that distinguished list. ROA is a unique artist with a powerful message. While he may shun the spotlight, he has found his voice and his passion and now travels the world to spread a message of conservation. Wherever he is, he tells the story of the interdependence between humans and animals through his prolific street art.

When society values motherhood, but not its mothers The Joys of Motherhood, Buchi Emecheta’s fourth novel, is on a par with African classics like Flora Nwapa’s Efuru in its depiction of Igbo culture and women’s reactions to society’s constructs. Written in 1979 and set in pre-independence Nigeria, the book remains soberly relevant as many of the subject matters addressed still ring true today. By Shayera Dark

Topics like patriarchy, resistance to women’s shifting roles, colonialism’s impact on African culture, and the notion of pregnancy as the ultimate prize and pride of womanhood continue to be debated today, with the general consensus influencing religion, public policies and private spaces. This story unfolds in the southeastern town of Ibuza and Lagos, which both serve as a metaphor for tradition and modernity, respectively, and follows the young protagonist Nnu Ego through marriage, motherhood and changing cultural norms.

Senior wife Following the demise of Nnu Ego’s first marriage due to her inability to get pregnant, her father quietly marries her off to Nnaife, a fellow townsman working in Lagos, a

city far away from the prying eyes of Ibuza. There, everything she knows is upended. While no respectable woman in Ibuza would sleep with a soldier, under the harsh realities of Lagos respectability takes a back seat. In addition, a woman in Ibuza is expected, once her child is weaned, to take up a trade and contribute to the home. But in Lagos, with no grandparents to babysit, Nnu Ego discovers working and childrearing are almost impossible to balance. She also comes to resent the term ‘senior wife’ for reminding her of Nnaife’s polygamous existence, whereas in Ibuza it connotes one’s superiority over co-wives. Nnaife’s job as a laundry man to his white master inspires little pride in Nnu Ego, especially when she sees him blithely inspecting the laundered undergarments of Madam. So when he informs Nnu Ego that they’d have to marry in church since she’s pregnant, or risk losing his job since Madam wouldn’t like their getting deregistered from church, she explodes at the thought of a wealthy chief’s daughter bowing to the demands of “that thing of a female whom she would not dream of offering to an enemy god.”

But who made the law that we should not hope in our daughters?”

“You behave like a slave,” Nnu Ego snaps, adding that she won’t marry in church. “I want to live with a man, not a woman-made man.” Submit to tradition Later, when she confides in her neighbour about her husband’s behaviour, the woman affirms that their husbands are indeed slaves as their salaries can barely afford them decent accommodation. It’s a fact Nnu Ego finds jarring, considering her father freed his slaves because white men deemed slavery illegal. Nnu Ego experiences her first pain of motherhood when her baby suddenly dies. But after an unsuccessful suicide attempt, more kids follow in rapid succession— forever silencing her ex-husband’s claim that she is “barren as a desert.” However,

Right: Re: The Joys Of Motherhood In Pictures! http://www. nairaland.com/

the strain of raising seven children with little finances quickly becomes a perennial source of stress for Nnu Ego, and Nnaife rather than improve their lot worsens it by spending scarce money on palm wine, refusing to provide sufficient money for food, and mindlessly inheriting his late brother’s wives. Still, Nnu Ego resigns herself to the inconveniences of staying married to a wayward man and sharing a onebedroom flat with another woman and her kids because tradition demands it.

Below: Oil painting of a woman with a child in her arms, happy motherhood

The duty to submit to tradition runs deep in The Joys of Motherhood. Nnu Ego suppresses her displeasure over Nnaife’s new wife to be the “sophisticated Ibuza wife to welcome another woman into her home,” despite recognising that the habits she’s picked up in Lagos in the last seven years would be difficult to change.

Embrace modernity In another scenario, when Nnu Ego’s eldest child tries consoling his father’s second wife on the death of her son, reminding her that she still has her daughter Dumbi, she retorts, “You’re worth more than 10 Dumbis.” The remark defines the reason Nnu Ego encourages her sons to invest more time into their school work while her daughters are made to hawk oranges after school, even as she questions society’s favouritism towards male children. “But who made the law that we should not hope in our daughters? We women subscribe to that law more than anyone. Until we change all this, it is still a man’s world, which women will always help build.” In the end, Nnu Ego is a woman torn between honouring tradition and embracing modernity. If books aren’t to be judged by their covers then The Joys of Motherhood shouldn’t be judged by its title for its aim is neither to elevate motherhood to loftier heights nor to celebrate its finest moments. If anything, The Joys of Motherhood is an achingly sad montage of a woman who sacrifices herself for the sake of her children, but most especially for her first son.

MADE IN RWANDA:

A SPECIALTY COFFEE EXPERIENCE By | Par Ruth Coleman

Une expérience de café de spécialité Made in Rwanda

RwandAir is now exclusively sourcing its in-flight coffee from Rwanda. Each cup is delightfully flavorful, and carries a powerful story behind it.

The coffee is grown by the women of Twongere Umusaruro Wa Kawa (Twongere), a farming group that works together to produce exceptional coffee. In only four years, the women of Twongere have evolved from smallholder farmers to businesswomen competing on the international stage.

© Clay Enos_Bloomberg Philanthropies-

Twongere’s transformation was kickstarted by a collaboration among government, philanthropy, and key players from the coffee industry. In 2013, Bloomberg Philanthropies invited US-based Sustainable Harvest Coffee Importers to join with the Government of Rwanda to support women coffee farmers and realize the untapped potential of women entrepreneurs in the coffee sector. This partnership supported the creation a training institute effort dedicated to training women coffee farmers and providing market access. The women of Twongere were among the first to be trained by this institute, under a program that has now reached over 18,000 women.

They learned how to improve the health of their coffee trees and increased their yields. The result? They doubled the productivity of their coffee plots. With an improved understanding of their coffee’s potential value, the women of Twongere invested in equipment to process their coffee. This investment enabled them to be fully engaged and recognized participants in the value chain from seed to cup. The result? They doubled their income from coffee. They now sell their coffee to leading international buyers for export to the United States and Europe. Their coffee is also marketed in Rwanda under the brand Question Coffee, a social enterprise working to build a local coffee culture in Rwanda.

Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration

Rwanda opens to the world Rwanda once more opens its borders to the World. In a move designed to follow up on its initial visa-on-arrival scheme to all Africans; from January 2018, travelers from across the world will get a 30 day visa upon arrival following the establishment of a new visa regime approved by the cabinet meeting chaired by President Paul Kagame on November 8th 2017. Rwanda has made significant strides to ease visa restrictions. The new initiative is part of a series of full reforms designed to make Rwanda an even more attractive travel destination. With the new visa regime, nationals of following Countries get free visa to Rwanda for 90 days: Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, Ghana, Guinea, Indonesia, Haiti, Senegal, Seychelles, Sao Tome and Principe, in addition to Mauritius, Philippines, Singapore, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, United Republic of Tanzania and South Sudan.

Another remarkable change in the new visa regulations is that beginning January 1st 2018, all citizens of the world will get visa on arrival at any Rwandan entry point on payment of the prescribed visa fee with exception of the above mentioned countries whose requirement for visa fee is waived, Previously, only African passport holders and a few other select countries could receive the visa without prior application.

Returning residents holding valid residence permits with corresponding resident cards are allowed to use their Foreigners’ ID cards on entry, including using electronic gates (Automated Passenger Clearance System) at Kigali international Airport. This will help to fast track clearance of inbound travelers as Rwandans and residents will be using the self-clearance system at the airport, decreasing likely congestion of travelers at Immigration counters.

The new visa regime sees nationals of COMESA Member States that require visa to Rwanda get a 90 days visa for 30$ as well, instead of validity. They include: Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Sudan, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Rwandans living abroad holding dual nationality can now enter the country on Rwandan identity cards without paying for visa fee, irrespective of passports they are using. Initially Rwandans travelling on a foreign passport in possession of a valid Rwandan passport were the only granted visa free on arrival.

The Government of Rwanda has also entered into visa waiver agreement for holders of diplomatic and Service passports with; Djibouti, Ethiopia, Gabon, Guinea, India, Israel, Morocco and Turkey. Now, Rwandans with diplomatic and service passports can travel in the mentioned countries visa free, which is also applicable for nationals of these countries traveling to Rwanda as well. The development is expected to play a key role in Rwanda’s plan to position itself a destination of choice..

Traditional Kind Palace at Urukari

A glimpse into Rwanda Museums National Liberation Museum Park

The Rwanda museums take us deep into the country’s rich heritage; the kingdoms, the artifacts, the values, norms and traditions. Located in different parts of the country, each museum has a different appeal and character. With a rich history that dates back to the kingdoms, colonial and post-colonial times; artifacts and regal symbols have been explored to attract local and foreign tourists, creating awareness about the culture of the Rwandan people. Before 1994, there was only one museum in Rwanda, the National Museum of Rwanda, located in former Butare, now Huye district in Southern Province. However, the number of museums has grown from one to eight; Museum of Environment, Former King Palace, National Art Gallery, Natural History Museum, National Liberation Museum, Presidential Palace Museum, Ethnographic Museum and Campaign Against Genocide Museum all under the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda (INMR). Ethnographic Museum Located in Huye district at 132 km from Kigali City, it is the oldest and biggest of all museums in Rwanda. It shelters the pre-colonial lifestyle as well as illustrations of the subsequent developments of Rwanda into a modern state. The Museum now houses one of Africa’s finest ethnographic collections. Its seven galleries display historical, ethnographic, artistic and archaeological artifacts, giving visitors a rich insight into the Rwandan culture. King’s Palace Museum Located 88 km from Kigali City, the museum is based in Nyanza district, the cultural hub of Rwanda. It showcases the lifestyle of Kings before and during the colonial period. At the site, Rwanda traditional royal huts restored to their 19th century state are erected besides a modern residence where King Mutara III Rudahigwa used to live. Visitors are always fascinated by the procession of the long-horned royal cows “Inyambo” which are famous for their impressive long horns, height gentle nature and the traditional poems exhibited live as they used to during the Kingship era.

Fascinating royal cows “Inyambo”

National Art Gallery Located just a few meters from the King’s Palace Museum, the Art Museum displays contemporary art crafts that reveal the creativity of Rwandan artists. Young children can also enjoy the Art Kids’ studio where they are given the opportunity to showcase their art skills. The house, which was originally built for King Mutara III Rudahigwa, did not serve its purpose as the Mwami (King) passed on two months to the occupancy. Natural History Museum Located at about 10 Km from the Kigali International Airport, this Museum is dedicated to Dr. Richard Kandt, a German Doctor and Explorer who embarked on an exploration of Rwanda in 1897, searching for the source of River Nile. Presidential Palace Museum Just 4 km from the Kigali International Airport, it served as the presidential palace during the 1970’s until late 2000. It gives visitors a chance to visit the former state house and get an overview of Rwanda’s historical events that eventually led to the spark off of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Vivid examples are the remains of the plane crash debris that was carrying President Habyarimana. Museum of Environment The museum is located in Karongi district at 136 km from Kigali city. Launched in 2012, this museum has a variety of exhibitions, including a roof garden made of medicinal plants, zoological, botanical collections, energy produced in Rwanda and in the rest of the world, and the role energy plays in a changing environment. A kids’ reading corner “Uruhongore” is also available at this museum in order to promote the reading culture in youth.

The Museum located in Gicumbi district 80 km from Kigali is comprised of a bunker which was the operational base of the then Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA) High Commander, General Paul Kagame. It served as the RPA headquarters between 1992 and 1994. The RPF/A struggle was launched on October 1st, 1990, with the objective of fighting the injustice and discrimination that had characterized Rwanda for decades. All RPF meetings, plans and communication strategies, among others, that helped to overthrow the former regime took place in Mulindi.

The bunker at Mulindi National Liberation Museum

Campaign Against Genocide Museum Campaign Against Genocide Museum is located in Kigali at the Parliamentary building, (formerly Conseil National de Développement (CND). The historical narrative stems from the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) politicians and 600 men and women protection force (3BN) who were being hosted from 28th December 1993 to monitor the preparation of putting in place the Broad Based Transitional Government. This, however, hit a snug and as a result the country sprung into fear and violence became the order of the day. From this point in time, the 600 men (3BN) were given the order first on 7th April 1994 by the RPA Chairman of High Command Major General Paul Kagame to break out from their initial positions, defend themselves and rescue victims of Genocide in their vicinity. It’s through this struggle that genocide was stopped and the country was liberated. The position of your seat can be adjusted by pressing the button located at the arm rest. For take-off and landing, all seats must be in the upright position.

SAFETY Your safety and comfort are important to us. Please watch the demonstration or the video of the emergency equipment before takeoff. For more information refer to the safety leaflet in the seat pocket in front of you.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Electronic Devices may not be used during taxing, takeoff, climbing, descent and landing. This includes laptop computers, remote-controlled games, radios, portable TVs and mobile phones, all of which may interfere with the safe operation of the aircraft.

TAKE-OFF

Immediately after takeoff the aircraft climbs very steeply. Shortly afterwards you will hear a reduction in the engine sound, but the aircraft will continue to climb. All aircraft cabins are pressurized. Due to change in pressure during takeoff and landing, some passengers may experience slight discomfort in the ear. Relieve this by swallowing, yawning or pinching the nostrils gently and breathing out whilst keeping lips sealed. Should you feel unwell at any time, please ask the cabin crew for assistance.

LANDING

After touch down, you may notice an increase in engine noise level due to the reverse thrust being applied to assist braking. Please remain seated until the engines have been switched off and the doors are opened. Before leaving the aircraft, ensure you have all your belongings with you. Always keep your belt fastened until the plane comes to a complete stop.

RwandAir is operating non-stop flights between Brussels and Kigali RwandAir is pleased to announce that from 31st October, 2017 it has started non-stop operations between Brussels and Kigali. RwandAir continues to offer three weekly flights from/to Brussels on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; however flights from Brussels to Kigali no longer operate via London. This has eliminated the requirement for Brussels passengers bound to Kigali to disembark at London Gatwick Airport for rescreening and the need for non-Schengen residents to acquire air-side UK visas.

Days

Tuesdays & Thursdays

Fridays

The new schedule was made possible pursuant to successful negotiations with Gatwick Airport for earlier slots out of London, enabling our aircraft to return to and depart from Brussels ahead of the Belgian jet ban. “We are confident,” says Chance Ndagano, Ag. CEO of RwandAir, “that the new improved schedule will not only be positively received by the Belgian market but will be a valued alternative for passengers traveling to Eastern and Southern Africa.”

Passengers to and from London-Gatwick Airport will be staying on board the aircraft at Zaventem Airport in Brussels with no need to disembark for rescreening. RwandAir’s new Airbus A330 fleet, configured in a triple class cabin with inflight connectivity, will continue to operate the Brussels – Gatwick route with the following hours.

Wonderful

Christmas Gift. Ann and her mother had lived in a small unattractive cottage as long as Ann could remember. It was party time. Christmas was so close, and so was her birthday. Ann wished she could get a new dress with frills and lace as a wonderful Christmas gift. All her friends would be getting new frocks. But Ann did not want to ask her Mom for a new dress. She knew how hard her mom worked to make both ends meet. Maybe she could make a wish ---maybe Santa Claus would come…. Ann couldn’t help dreaming about the new frock even though she knew that Santa Claus is just an imaginary character. Her classmates were talking only of Christmas celebrations which were nearing. Ann felt left out in those conversations. She neither had rich parents nor rich aunt & uncle to give her expensive gifts. It was not just gift that worried Ann. It was her mother. Nowadays she was working overtime and looked pale and worn out. The days passed and soon it was 130

Christmas Eve. In everyone’s, except Ann’s, house a Christmas tree adorned the living room. In the kitchens there hung the lovely aroma of freshly baked cakes and turkey. But nothing lovely was being cooked in Ann’s house. Every child went to bed eagerly waiting for the lovely gifts that he or she would receive the next day. Ann went to bed with a heavy heart. She knew that there would be no gifts for her. Ann wished with her whole heart that at least this time she would get a gift from Santa Claus. Ann slowly drifted off to sleep. She dreamt of Santa riding in the snow on his reindeers.

material of the dresses she usually wore. She checked the gift carefully to find out who gave her this beautiful frock. Suddenly a small piece of paper fell out from the inner layer of frock. Ann eagerly started to read the note.

Ring….Ring…Ann jumped, hearing alarm. She suddenly remembered that it’s Christmas day. Without much hope she looked if there were any gifts for her. Wonder of wonders! There lay a beautiful packet tied with a red ribbon. Ann excitedly opened the package. It was a pretty white frock with fluffy frills and attractive lace. She touched the material. It was soft and silky unlike the hard coarse

Ann felt that there was something familiar about this note. She looked into the note carefully. Then it struck her. She realized that this handwriting is similar to her mother’s. Her mother had worked overtime to save money to buy this expensive gift. Ann was happy beyond words. She knew that she is the luckiest girl to have such a wonderful mother as a wonderful christmas gift.
