Thirty years ago, the Princess of Wales travelled to Sydney to open the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute’s newest location. Now, local theatre company Hyde Entertainment is giving Newcastle audiences a glimpse into the beloved late royal’s life in 2026 with its season of the Broadway musical Diana.
The plot follows a 19-year-old Diana Spencer as she meets Prince Charles (now King Charles III), clashes with Camilla Parker Bowles, struggles to meet Queen Elizabeth II’s
expectations, and comes into her own as a style icon – one revenge dress at a time.
Diana the musical infamously premiered during the pandemic by way of a professional taping of the stage production ahead of its delayed opening and was met with backlash for its trite and tenuous homage to the People’s Princess; however, Hyde Artistic Director and Diana co-director Seb Smee is not deterred, embracing the piece’s legacy.
“We have been overwhelmed with interest and excitement around this production since the day we announced it,” says Smee.
“We cannot wait to bring Australian audiences a fresh, reimagined version of this breathtaking new musical.”
Smee also stresses the importance of not boiling down the real-life people portrayed in the musical to preconceived public perceptions of their morality.
“This isn’t a story of heroes and villains. We aren’t here to say that the royal family are horrible people, or to say that Diana was even the perfect woman; we are just here to tell her story truthfully and respectfully.”
Hyde garnered eight nominations for City of Newcastle Drama Association awards, including Best Musical Production and Best Ensemble, for its 2025 productions of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Calvin Berger, and Diana is shaping up to be yet another feather in the company’s cap.
“[Diana] is a musical that, of course, has a devastating ending and many difficult moments throughout, but it also finds a way to make you laugh and, ultimately, feel inspired”, says Smee. “The script is absolutely perfect, and the music is utterly breathtaking.”
Diana is set to play at the Civic Theatre, Playhouse from 1 to 8 March 2026. Tickets are limited and selling fast—book now on the Civic Theatre Newcastle website: www.civictheatrenewcastle.com.au.

The festive season in Newcastle is more than just tinsel and lights - it’s a time for connection, joy, and celebration. From the heart of the city to the sparkling Harbour Foreshore, City of Newcastle is rolling out its annual calendar of Christmas cheer and New Year festivities, offering something for everyone. Whether it’s wandering through a glowing Christmas precinct, snapping selfies with Santa, or dancing your way into 2026, the city is alive with energy, creativity, and community spirit.
The magic began in Wheeler Place, where the city’s iconic 11-metre Christmas tree was officially lit on Friday, 28 November. Shimmering with lights, ornaments, and festive flair, the tree promises to be a central beacon of holiday joy in the Civic precinct throughout the Christmas season. Crowds gathered from 5pm and experienced a night of entertainment and celebration, kicking off the festivities with free photos alongside Santa and his sleigh, while the roving Elves with Bells brought playful energy to the evening. Children delighted in the Jingle Bell craft station, posting letters to Santa on
decorated cards and creating silver bell ribbon bracelets to take home. Locals and visitors indulged their sweet tooth with treats from LuLu’s Gelato Co. and Doughheads’ Christmasthemed doughnuts, enjoying the festive precinct as they strolled through the lights and decorations.
Live performances brought the evening to life, from Christmas dance routines by the Ablaze Dance Academy to carolling choirs and a jazz band spinning seasonal favourites. The highlight of the night was the lighting of the Christmas tree by Deputy Lord Mayor Cr Charlotte McCabe, followed by a joyful finale of Jingle Bells, with everyone ringing their bells and singing along.
“Lighting our 11-metre Christmas tree in Wheeler Place was a truly magical moment,” said Deputy Lord Mayor Charlotte McCabe. “The launch event really captured what our Christmas program is all about: bringing people together, celebrating our city and creating joyful moments that leave a lasting impression. Christmas in Newcastle is a time when our community shines, and it will be fantastic to see the celebrations continue across the festive season weekends.”
If you missed the official lighting of the tree, don’t despair. The festive fun continues throughout December, transforming Wheeler Place into a hub of seasonal activity with live music, Santa appearances and family-friendly joy on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons until December 14. The dazzling decorations provide plenty of selfie-worthy moments, including twinkling reindeer, oversized bells and Santa’s sleigh, perfect for DIY family and pet ‘pawtraits’ with Santa. From local choirs such as the Belair Public School Choir & Band, and the Hunter Singers to the Novatones and the National Music Academy, Newcastle’s talented performers provide a soundtrack to the season that is both heartfelt and uplifting. These free celebrations are accessible to everyone, embodying the spirit of community that Newcastle strives to foster.
Adding even more festive cheer to the precinct, City of Newcastle’s cultural venues are serving up a merry line-up of performances during December, with the Newcastle University Choir delivering a stirring performance of Handel’s Messiah at City Hall on 14 December, and the musical theatre production of Kinky Boots will provide an award-winning reason to
visit the Civic Theatre from 18 to 21 December. In addition, the popular One Song Sing community performance event will return to Wheeler Place on Monday, 22 December, presented by the Civic Theatre and The Sum of the Parts. This year, it’s a “Last Christmas Mashup” of Last Christmas by Wham and Birds of a Feather by Billie Eilish. Participants learn the song, in three-part harmony, in one hour. It's a free event, but registration is required – (https:// civictheatrenewcastle.com.au/what-s-on/ all-shows/onesongsing2025)
“Newcastle’s creative community adds so much richness to our festive celebrations. These cultural experiences create connection, invite people to explore our public spaces and showcase our incredible local talent that makes Newcastle such a special place to celebrate Christmas,” said Cr McCabe.
While the lights, music, and performances bring the city to life, Newcastle’s local businesses are also part of the festive story. The city encourages residents and visitors to explore its unique retail and dining options, with special promotions, discounts, and seasonal offers making shopping in the city centre an experience in itself. From quirky boutiques to artisan retailers, the Civic precinct and surrounding streets, including Darby Street and Hunter Street Mall, provide diverse options for gift shopping.
“Our Christmas program of activities celebrates the joy and togetherness of the season while shining a light on the amazing local retailers, cafes and restaurants that make our city so special,” Cr McCabe said.
“We’re encouraging everyone to come into the city, explore our unique shops, dining spots and free entertainment while supporting local traders and cultural venues.”

When the calendar flips to December 31, Newcastle transforms into the ultimate colourdrenched party playground along the Harbour Foreshore, welcoming residents and visitors to a night of entertainment, creativity, and community. Running from 5pm to 9.15pm, the celebration promises something for everyone - families, friends, and partygoers of all ages. This inclusive, family-friendly event invites the Newcastle community to come together to farewell 2025 and welcome 2026 with joy, imagination and connection.
Produced by local creatives Fingers Crossed Creative and Canvas Events, the event is designed with distinct zones to cater to different styles of celebration – ensuring that no matter what you enjoy, there’s something here for you. From energetic play areas for children to relaxing picnic spots and vibrant entertainment hubs - whether you're looking to dance, dine, create, or simply unwind, there is a space for every type of reveller.
At the centre of the festivities is the Wish Exchange, a whimsical, immersive installation that invites guests to share their hopes and resolutions for the year ahead. Step into a colourful Wish Call Centre and Post Office, flanked by two vibrant photo-op phone booths and pick up the receiver to leave your wish or resolution after the tone. Your message will be transformed into text and displayed on a glowing LED wall behind the DJ stage, creating a shared wallpaper of dreams and intentions for 2026. This interactive experience combines playfulness with reflection, offering attendees a moment to pause, connect, and consider what they want from the year ahead - an intimate counterpoint to the energy of the celebrations unfolding all around them.

some fun. It encourages reflection and helps people to feel a part of something bigger than themselves.”
Zackari Watt from Fingers Crossed Creative has worked on five of the last eight New Year’s Eve events for City of Newcastle and is excited by this year’s Wish Exchange.
“Every year we do a wish-based interactive installation,” said Zackari. “In past years we’ve done a wish walk, a wish tree, a wish maze and a wish house. This year’s Wish Exchange takes this concept to a whole new level with wishes being displayed on the LED wall. It’s a really beautiful concept and experience – every year, people spend time reading the anonymous wishes of their community. Some of them are cute, some sentimental, some heartbreaking,
The NYE Kids Zone is a summer-holidayinspired wonderland bursting with colour, movement and imagination, designed to delight children and families alike. Free for all attendees, this vibrant space offers a playful mix of activities that spark creativity and is designed to keep children engaged, entertained, and inspired through hands-on participation. The kids’ interactive workshops will culminate in small performances guaranteed to make Mum and Dad proud. Built with sustainability in mind, the Kids Zone is an eco-conscious playground that’s as fun as it is thoughtful.
“We’ve spread the Kids Zone out a bit more this year and added additional activities to reduce waiting times,” said Zackari. “Kids can dive into the fun with classic old-fashioned
sideshow games that bring a nostalgic carnival vibe. Juggling, puppetry, and hula hoop workshops encourage new skills and expression through movement, while a toddleronly jumping castle ensures our littlest guests have a safe and energetic space to bounce freely.”
Adding to the festive flair, face painting and temporary tattoos will transform young partygoers into glittering butterflies, superheroes, and everything in between. For those who love to craft, the “design your own NYE sunglasses” station offers a chance to look ahead to 2026 with personalised flair, transforming repurposed and thrifted sunnies into statement pieces.
For those who love the energy of music, comedy, and performance, the Live Stage at The Station is the place to be. Local acts will entertain with a stellar lineup of homegrown music, fringe cabaret, and comedy
performances, showcasing Newcastle’s thriving creative community.
“We’ve stepped up the live entertainment at The Station this year, too,” said Zackari. “Last year the music was mostly acoustic performances, and this year there’ll be more diversity."
Across the site, three DJ stations - including a kids’ disco with a “Step Up & Shoot” selfie camera that projects your face on the LED board for everyone to see will keep the energy and fun high and the beats flowing, ensuring there’s never a dull moment.
Giant inflatables, including the ten-metre Newy NYE tunnel, create iconic photo opportunities and whimsical fun for all ages.
Amid the excitement of New Year’s Eve, the event offers thoughtfully designed spaces for guests to unwind, connect and enjoy the evening at their own pace. Two open Picnic Zones provide grassy areas perfect for lounging with friends and family over a shared meal. For those seeking a quieter experience, the Quiet Zone offers a calm, seated space ideal for elderly or vulnerable community members. An Accessible Viewing Platform ensures that everyone can comfortably participate in the festivities, with inclusive design at its core. Meanwhile, Eat Streets are spread across three zones to reduce congestion and wait times, with The Station Eat Street featuring tables and chairs on a hard stand, making it easier for people with mobility needs to enjoy a delicious meal in comfort.
Sally Hill of Canvas Events works across both the Christmas and New Year events with an eye toward continuous improvement year on year.
“Both Zackari and I are really passionate about keeping our events local. All our food

vendors, contractors and entertainment are all sourced locally,” said Sally.
“This is a local event, for and by locals.”
The evening culminates with a crescendo of eagerly anticipated fireworks lighting up the night sky at 9pm to the delight of both young and old.
“This year the fireworks display takes place on a barge from the harbour, providing viewers from both sides with easy sight lines to ensure visibility from the foreshore and Stockton all the way down to Horseshoe Beach,” said Sally. “The barge is the best location for maximum viewing coverage and will offer a spectacular finale to the night. The event officially closes at 9.15pm.”

Mark Friday 12 December in your diary – Clyde St Arts is throwing open its doors for a festive evening of creativity, community and Christmas shopping with a difference.
From 4pm to 9pm, the sprawling 25,000-square-metre creative precinct at 50 Clyde Street, Hamilton North, will transform into a vibrant marketplace showcasing the work of over 30 independent artists, alongside open studios, live music, food trucks, and family entertainment.
"We've had a massive year at Clyde St Arts and now have 30 creative businesses residing here, which means over 100 artists who call this their working home," says Katerina Skoumbas, Director of Clyde St Arts.
"As Australia's largest collective of artists, we're opening back up for one night only to celebrate our studios, talents and products."
The evening promises something for everyone. The Creator Incubator will showcase work from over 30 artists, from emerging talent to established names, while local hero OzHarvest – fresh from celebrating 20 years in operation – will run a BBQ fundraiser. Upcycle Newcastle will offer their signature repurposed denim, hats and sail bags, proving that sustainable shopping can be seriously stylish.
Live performances throughout the night feature Midnight Dreaming, Islington Public School band, HHRD, Frog Impostor, Earthen Rhythms and Fungas, with DJs and karaoke keeping the energy high. The kids haven't been forgotten either, with a family movie screening to keep little ones entertained.
The site itself is steeped in Newcastle history. Originally purchased in 1937 by the Newcastle and Suburban Co-operative Society – known locally as "The Store" – it once housed the southern hemisphere's most successful co-operative, including Australia's largest bakery and a stable of Clydesdale horses. After closing in 1987, the precinct found new life in 2017 when artists began to settle into the industrial spaces organically.
"Avoid the chaos at Kotara this Christmas and join your community to shop locally and support your local talent," Katerina adds.
Entry is free, and with art sales, handmade goods and second-hand treasures on offer, it's the perfect opportunity to find unique Christmas gifts while supporting Newcastle's thriving creative community.

The Hunter Valley's rural and vineyard property market is experiencing a quiet revolution. With Australian wine exports surging 13% in value to $2.48 billion and volume lifting 3% to 639 million litres, according to Wine Australia, the region's prestige agricultural properties are attracting serious attention from buyers both locally and internationally. Enter McGrath Rural, bringing unprecedented global reach to the Hunter's doorstep through strategic partnerships that are reshaping how premium rural properties are marketed and sold.
At the helm locally is Tyson Nicholson, McGrath's Rural and Lifestyle Specialist covering the Central Coast, Lake Macquarie and Lower Hunter. With nearly 30 years in rural real estate, Tyson brings more than credentials to the role. He's a working rural property owner himself, running 50 acres in the Lower Hunter,

complete with horses and a boutique Airbnb operation.
Sydney," Tyson explains. "Now they can work with a local agent who has the backing of a global, triple-branded company. That gives them confidence and options like never before."
For vineyard properties, especially, this global network is proving invaluable. As confidence returns to the wine industry and international markets reopen, premium Hunter Valley vineyards represent both lifestyle aspirations and genuine business opportunities. The right buyer might be a Sydney family seeking a weekend escape, a serious winemaker looking to expand, or an international investor with capital to deploy.

"I live it every day," he says. "I know how rural people think because I am one."
What truly sets McGrath Rural apart is its powerful alliance with global property leader Knight Frank, the world's largest privately owned real estate agency with more than 740 offices across 50 territories, and Bayleys, New Zealand's largest full-service real estate company with 105 offices throughout New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. This three-way partnership delivers something the Hunter Valley market hasn't had before: direct access to high-equity buyers across all major markets worldwide, combined with genuine boots-onthe-ground local expertise.
"Traditionally, vendors had to choose between a local agent or someone from
"Buyers aren't just looking at production or financial returns," Tyson notes. "They're imagining their dreams, lifestyle ambitions, even retirement goals. That's why storytelling matters so much. We spend considerable time on video, photography and copy to bring properties to life."
McGrath Rural's reach extends beyond vineyards to working farms, grazing operations, equine estates and lifestyle retreats. The division is supported by a unified network of ten McGrath offices spanning the Coast, Lake Macquarie, Newcastle and the Hunter, backed by Australia's largest digital marketing platform and the exclusive Knight Frank international buyer database.
Tyson is quick to emphasise that McGrath Rural isn't about high-pressure tactics. "We're just asking people to consider us. Take the meeting, have the conversation. There's no pressure; it's about finding the right fit."
With recent rainfall greening the region, lower interest rates bringing more Sydney buyers, and market conditions looking strong for the next three to five years, Tyson sees genuine opportunity ahead. For rural and vineyard property owners considering their options,
McGrath Rural offers something genuinely different: global capability married with local understanding, delivered by someone who truly gets the rural lifestyle.

Taking a bold gamble in 2019, they purchased a 14-acre property in Broke and planted 4,000 lavender bushes in their first year. "Everyone told us to start small, but we went with our instincts," says Marianne. "Basically, go big or go home!" Now in their fourth season, the farm has flourished into a beloved destination where around 30 per cent of visitors return year after year.
The Hunter Valley has long been celebrated for its wine, but venture beyond the cellar doors and you'll discover two unique familyrun experiences that capture the region's agricultural innovation and natural beauty. From fragrant lavender fields in Broke to award-winning olive groves in Denman, these destinations offer visitors a chance to slow down, taste something extraordinary, and connect with the land.
Each December, the landscape just beyond Broke transforms into a sea of purple as Hunter Lavender Farm opens its gates for just four
precious weeks. This year's season runs from 6 December to 4 January, celebrating the theme "Summer Smiles in Bloom" - an invitation to wander, taste, and find joy among 15,000 lavender plants buzzing with bees and filled with summer fragrance.
For founders Marianne and JR Villanueva, the farm represents a remarkable journey from corporate life to a countryside dream. The couple first fell in love with lavender during their 2018 honeymoon in Provence, France. "When we both saw lavender as far as our eyes could see, he was just as captivated as I was," Marianne recalls. "It was surreal, and the memory has become an inspiration for our farm today."
Beyond the Instagram-worthy field walks, Hunter Lavender Farm offers genuine sensory experiences. The Lavender Bar serves lavenderinfused cocktails, mocktails, and the popular lavender gelato in new flavour combinations, while visitors can enjoy picnics at Serenity Square Garden with views over vineyards and mountains. Hands-on experiences include the Honey Harvest Experience and Beekeeping for Beginners, where guests suit up in protective gear and explore active hives to discover honey production firsthand.
The farm's therapeutic focus extends to mindful experiences such as the Lavender Labyrinth, a meditative walk rooted in ancient traditions, and the increasingly popular Yoga in Lavender Bloom session on New Year's Eve. "It's all about slowing down, connecting with yourself and the natural world, and letting the lavender work its calming magic," says Marianne.

While lavender captivates in Broke, another family story unfolds among the olive groves of Denman, where Pukara Estate has spent more than 25 years perfecting the art of premium olive oils and vinegars. Under the stewardship of husband-and-wife team Steve and Racquel Goodchild, the estate has become one of Australia's most recognised names in gourmet food.
Steve planted the first olives in 1999 after running international olive industry research tours and recognising the Hunter Valley's potential for premium production. "Both Steve and I come from generational farming families, and he always knew that he wanted to be a farmer-producer," says Racquel.
What truly sets Pukara Estate apart is its exceptional range of vinegars. In 2006, Steve laid down 12 oak barrels using a mother culture sourced from Seppeltsfield in the Barossa, which has been in continuous production since the late 1800s. Using a rolling blend method with Hunter Valley grapes and wine, they create authentically Australian aged vinegars that are rare in a market dominated by imports. Their Caramelised Balsamic remains a best-seller, while innovations like fig, pomegranate, and guava varieties continue to inspire home cooks and chefs alike.

"Our vinegars are about making flavour accessible," Racquel explains. "You can take the simplest dish - grilled vegetables, a salad, even fruit - and transform it with just a drizzle."
Pukara's commitment to sustainability shines through their innovative olive-grazed lamb program, where lambs graze directly in the groves, managing undergrowth and eliminating the need for herbicides while developing a distinctive flavour profile that's caught the attention of local chefs.
Visitors to Pukara's tasting rooms in Muswellbrook, Pokolbin, or Newcastle can
sample oils and vinegars, explore condiments, artisan jams, pesto, and even the Earth & Grace skincare range made with the estate's signature olive oils. The Connoisseur Club offers members early access to new releases, including the highly anticipated Novello oil made from the season's first harvest.

The start of a new year brings a familiar pressure: set bold goals, change everything, and commit without fail. But most resolutions fizzle by February, not because people give up, but because the expectations were wrong from the start.
The key to lasting change? Make it easier. More enjoyable. More geared towards the longterm.
Here are five simple ways to build a better fitness habit this year (and well beyond):
1. Start with less pressure
All-or-nothing goals tend to burn out fast. Instead, aim for consistency and set sustainable goals. Not five sessions a week if you haven’t been in months. Start small. Choose habits you can build into your life — not ones that overhaul it overnight.
2. Choose a gym that fits you
The closer your gym is to home or work, the easier it is to keep showing up. Bonus points for simple bookings, flexible options, and a weekto-week cost that doesn’t make you feel bad for missing a week.
3. Find a connection
Classes like Functional Training, Reformer Pilates and Zumba offer structure and support, and they’re also easy places to connect naturally. You will often see people introducing themselves, chatting to the person next to them or swapping social media details after class. When you feel seen or welcomed, showing up becomes easier and more enjoyable.
4. Don’t underestimate the power of micro-communities
Every club has their regulars: the Monday yogis, the lunchtime lifters, the 6am die-hards. Over time, those familiar faces start to notice when you miss a session, rally when you hit a

milestone, and lift you on the tough days. These micro-communities raise the energy in the room, create accountability, and make it much easier for healthy habits to stick.
5. Progress over punishment
Look for a membership that supports, not punishes. Gyms like Urth Fitness offer flexible options with no lock-in guilt. Even on lowenergy days, having the option to show up and relax in the Recovery Lounge can keep the rhythm going.
Whether you’re starting from scratch or starting again, the best resolution is one that feels good to keep and sets you on a better path towards long-term wellness. Surround yourself with people who rally for you. Choose a space that works for your life. And remember: you don’t have to do it alone.
The best investment is U. Find your local club at www.urthfitness.com.au.

Weight loss surgery is more than a procedure — it’s a life-changing journey with longterm benefits for health and wellbeing. For individuals struggling with obesity and its associated conditions, bariatric surgery offers a proven pathway to sustained weight loss,
improved mobility, and a reduction or cure of diabetes, heart disease and sleep apnoea.
Many factors contribute to obesity, and each individual’s journey to better health is unique. Fortunately, we live in an age where the stigma associated with obesity is slowly lifting, our understanding of the genetic, metabolic and environmental contributors is improving, and our treatment options are evolving.
Diet and lifestyle modification remain the first step to better health. Medications are an additional treatment option, but surgery remains the gold standard for achieving durable, safe, and long-lasting weight loss. Long-term research studies have found that, on average, patients who undergo a gastric bypass experience a total body weight loss of 25% 20 years later.
The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and laparoscopic gastric bypass procedures were introduced to the Hunter region by surgeons at the NOW clinic in the late 2000s. They have the region's longest experience in supporting patients through their weight loss journey. Weight loss management is a lifelong commitment, and the surgeons at the NOW clinic have the highest follow-up rate in Australia.
What sets their program apart is an outstanding dedication to long-term follow-up. Weight loss surgery is just the beginning — real success lies in ongoing support and commitment. Dr Karihaloo and Dr Di Sano are committed to personalised, compassionate care and lead one of the region’s highest follow-up engagement rates, providing structured aftercare that includes body composition scans, nutritional guidance, psychological support, and regular reviews to maximise outcomes and minimise complications.
Their practice also offers the latest in robotic-assisted surgery, a cutting-edge option that provides increased precision, reduced recovery time, and often fewer complications. This modern approach, combined with an old-fashioned dedication to patient care, gives patients the best of both worlds: advanced medicine delivered with heart.
For many, weight loss surgery represents the turning point toward a healthier, more active, and fulfilling life. With trusted specialists like Dr Karihaloo and Dr Di Sano by their side,

I have just read Professor Scott Galloway's new book, Notes on Being a Man. As a father of two sons, he’s become increasingly alarmed that the manosphere has hijacked the idea of masculinity. For Galloway, coarseness, cruelty, and violence are the opposite of what being a man should mean. His book is part autobiography and part operations manual for men navigating today’s world.
The main point is that isolation—not weakness—is the real threat to masculinity. Many of the world’s largest companies attempt to convince us that we can lead a fulfilling life online, with less hassle and a lower risk of rejection. They profit by keeping people away from real-life relationships.
When you learn that 45% of men aged 18 to
while 63% of men under 30 aren’t pursuing a romantic relationship. That one in four men can’t name a best friend, and one in seven can’t name any close friends, it’s obvious there’s a problem. The guardrails that come from friends and romantic relationships are priceless. These connections encourage us to be more personable, take care of ourselves, and learn how to compromise and communicate. None of these skills is sharpened by screen time.
People often discuss it as a men-versuswomen issue, but empathy isn’t a zero-sum game. One group doesn’t have to lose for the other to win. Women want equality and safety, but we all want men to be their best selves—if only because it benefits everyone. Men are our friends, partners, sons, and they share the world with our daughters.
All of this was on my mind when my friend Laura and I arrived at the Wallabadah Hotel to run the final round of Mulletfest for the year.
The event has been going strong for 8 years, and people keep coming back because of Laura and pubs like this one. The Wallabadah

Hotel is an easy 3-hour drive north-west of Newcastle on the way to Tamworth. It’s the heart of a town with fewer than 800 people. It’s a beautiful, family-friendly place with mouthwatering food. In the increasingly isolationist world that Galloway describes, it’s a real gift to walk into a place where the bar staff know your name and are happy to chat. I also love that there are no poker machines—no extra screens to distract you from real conversation. They also have the nicest pub accommodation I’ve seen in a long time.
Watching my friend stand in the middle of the bar that night with a microphone, I realised why she’s one of the most interesting people I know. She’s truly curious about others. Even though we both have hectic lives and stressful day jobs, she spends her free time raising money for charity and giving our mostly male contestants a chance to shine and share their stories.
I will leave you some salient advice straight from Professor Galloway. “The anxiety and depression you will eventually feel locked in your room, sequestered from other mammals, is far greater than the fear of anything that lies outside of that room for you. Get out of your room, get off your phone.”
Next time you are out that way, make a point of calling into the Wallabadah Hotel. Order a beer and start a conversation with a stranger. It could change your life.
Scott Galloway’s book Notes on Being a Man really is a must-read. Available now in hard copy or audiobook.

Most people are familiar with teenagers affected by scoliosis, a condition of unknown origin in which the spine curves sideways. Approximately 2% of adolescents have idiopathic scoliosis. However, adult scoliosis is becoming an increasingly common topic of discussion among allied health professionals.
Age-related degenerative scoliosis develops when the spine begins to curve sideways as a result of wear and tear on the spinal discs and joints. This curvature is often accompanied by rotation of the vertebrae and surrounding structures.
You may notice subtle signs, such as an uneven waistline when wearing a t-shirt or

a slight tilt in your shoulders. Degenerative scoliosis is more common in women aged 40 to 60, particularly during the hormonal changes associated with menopause. What many people don’t realise is that it can affect up to 40–60% of adults over the age of 60.
As the spinal discs degenerate over time, the vertebrae can lose shape and height unevenly, creating imbalance and strain throughout the spine, muscles, and ligaments. The curvature can be further intensified by conditions such as osteoporosis and facet joint degeneration. Over time, this may contribute to noticeable postural changes and balance difficulties.
• Lower back and mid-spine (thoracic) pain
• Increased stiffness
• Pain radiating down one or both legs
• Breathing difficulties due to rib curvature
• Visible changes in posture or body alignment

An EOS scan (a low-dose, weight-bearing X-ray) is highly recommended to evaluate the spinal curve in three dimensions. This allows your physiotherapist to assess muscle length, overall strength, and joint involvement with greater accuracy.
There is growing evidence that therapeutic exercise can help reduce or slow the progression of spinal curvature. One specialised technique is Rotational Abdominal Breathing, which helps expand compressed areas, improve lung function, and activate deep spinal stabilisers. Once a patient develops awareness and control of their spinal movement, specific strengthening exercises are introduced to reinforce improved posture and engage supporting muscles. Over time, new movement patterns are developed to prevent a return to old habits.
A well-structured, progressive program combining strengthening and stretching can help slow or reverse the progression of curvature and related symptoms. Additional treatments may include joint mobilisation, soft tissue therapy, and dry needling to relieve stiffness and muscle fatigue.
Remaining active is essential for maintaining flexibility, mobility, and overall musculoskeletal health. Regular movement, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep all contribute to a healthier spine. In contrast, inactivity can worsen pain and spinal degeneration while increasing curvature. It may also lead to other health issues such as weight gain, fatigue, and reduced ability to participate in daily activities.
While physiotherapy can’t cure scoliosis, it can play a vital role in slowing its progression and improving quality of life. Early detection and intervention are key. The sooner scoliosis is identified, the better the outcomes.

The excitement kicks off on Sunday, 18 October 2026, with a thrilling double-header in Round One. Fans will witness New Zealand women take on Fiji Bulikula, followed by a barnstorming Pasifika showdown as the Fiji Bati face off against the Cook Islands in a crucial men's group match.
But that's not all – Newcastle will host the first men's and women's semi-finals on Saturday, 7 November 2026, cementing the city's reputation as a premier destination for major sporting events.
"Newcastle is Rugby League heartland, and that passion will be on full display during the

"Watching a footy game at McDonald Jones Stadium should be on every League fan's bucket list, and the 2026 World Cup is the perfect opportunity to experience a doubleheader game day in Newcastle."
The tournament is expected to bring thousands of international visitors to the Hunter region, with an estimated economic injection of over $19 million into the NSW visitor economy. Newcastle Museum is inviting adults to put down their devices and pick up some creative tools with the launch of Make N Do, a new hands-on workshop series designed to spark curiosity and connection.
Led by resident artist and educator Ken O'Regan, the free workshops encourage participants to explore their creativity through guided and open-ended activities inspired by history, science and the Museum's current exhibitions.
The series kicked off on Thursday, 13 November and runs each Thursday until 4 December from 2pm to 4pm, with all materials

Your family will likely remember you through shared memories, cherished traditions and acts of kindness that you inspired throughout your lifetime.

provided. The first sessions have been taking inspiration from the Model Newcastle exhibition, with participants designing and building miniature homes and imaginative structures using everyday recyclable materials.
"Make N Do gives adults permission to create for the sake of creativity," said City of Newcastle Director of Museum, Archive, Libraries and Learning Julie Baird.
"It invites people to step away from their screens, slow down and explore the joy of making something with our hands."
Ms Baird said the workshops are about curiosity and experimentation rather than skill level or perfection. "When we make, we shift our focus, calm the mind and open new neural pathways. Our programs at Newcastle Museum are always well-received and highly valued by the community."
Following the initial four-week series, Make N Do will continue as an ongoing program in 2026. Group bookings and tailored workshops for community and disability support groups are also available on request.
Bookings are essential via the Museum's website. For group or accessibility enquiries, contact Newcastle Museum via enquiries@ newcastlemuseum.com.au or 4974 1400.
Lake Macquarie City Council is backing the region's brightest young stars with the launch of the Youth Excellence Sponsorship (YES!) program, investing more than $30,000 annually to help emerging talent reach their full potential.
The program will offer grants of up to $1000 for teams or groups, or $300 for individuals competing at high-level or elite competition across sport, science, arts, technology and academia.
Open to Lake Macquarie residents aged under 18, the initiative is designed to break down financial barriers that can prevent young people from pursuing excellence in their chosen fields.
"We know the cost of competing at an elite level can be a major hurdle for families," said Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz.
"This program ensures our young people have the chance to shine on the biggest stages and represent Lake Macquarie with pride."
Fifteen-year-old track-and-field and football star Mackenzie Preston-Poole welcomed the program, highlighting the financial pressures facing young athletes and their families.
"It does cost a lot of money for my family," she said.
DOING EXTRAORDINARY THINGS in your local community and we urgently need more of them.
Fostering does not have to be full-time. Emergency Carers look after children and young people removed from unsafe situations for short period while a carer or family member is being located. Being taken from home and family in these circumstances is traumatic for children and the Emergency Foster Carers usually need to be available to take a child at any time though you can let us know when there are times you are not going to be available.
At Key Assets Australia, we provide our foster carers with ongoing training, 24/7 support, a dedicated social worker, and an allowance. We hold regular events and connect foster carers with each other for extra support.
Anyone can apply to become a foster carer. We celebrate diversity and welcome enquiries from people who are single or in a relationship, homeowners or renting. Your culture, religion or sexual orientation doesn’t affect your eligibility for foster care. We believe the diversity of our carers is vital when finding the best possible family for a child.

"There's the travel, all the new clothes, the shoes and other things. The older athletes can get sponsorships, but it's a lot harder when you're younger, so this would be a big help."
Applicants must demonstrate exceptional achievement and commitment, providing evidence such as awards, rankings or invitations to high-level events. The $32,000 annual program also prioritises inclusion, supporting diverse pathways and inspiring community pride through youth success stories.
Applications are now open at www.lakemac. com.au/Our-Council/Grants-and-funding/ Youth-Excellence-Sponsorship-Program.
