From the Editor

Welcome to the November issue of intouch Magazine! As we step into the festive season, this month's edition is brimming with creativity, celebration and community spirit that truly captures the heart of Newcastle and the Hunter.

Our cover story takes you backstage with Kinky Boots, the Tony Award-winning musical striding into Newcastle's Civic Theatre this December. This feel-good celebration of selfexpression and courage, featuring music by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, promises to be the perfect pre-Christmas treat. We chat with the talented local cast and crew bringing this inspiring story to life.

Based on a true story about a struggling Northampton shoe factory that found unexpected success creating bespoke boots for drag performers, Kinky Boots is more than just glittering entertainment. It's a heartwarming tale about embracing differences, finding courage, and discovering that sometimes the most unlikely partnerships create the greatest transformations. Chookas Entertainment's production brings this high-energy celebration to our city at precisely the right moment—when we need a reminder that acceptance, community, and a little bit of sparkle can change everything.

The festive spirit continues with the return of Hunter Valley Gardens' Christmas Lights Spectacular, where millions of twinkling lights transform eight acres into a magical wonderland. With exciting new attractions, including the HO HO Harvest area and interactive Nutcracker Storytime, it's set to create unforgettable family memories throughout summer.

Music lovers are in for a treat with Mara! and the Martenitsa Choir celebrating 30 years together with their album launch at Hamilton, while Down the Park debuts at Foreshore Park with a free afternoon of live local music, food and family fun. The Highland Games also make their return to the Hunter, bringing Scottish tradition and spectacular feats of strength to the vineyards of Lovedale.

Young performers take centre stage this month too, with Hive Youth Theatre's production of The Wizard of Oz showcasing over 50 talented performers aged 8-15 at the Civic Playhouse—a wonderful reminder of the incredible talent emerging in our region.

This November issue truly reflects what makes our region special—the arts, the community connections, and the creative spirit that brings us all together.

Enjoy!

Curves Take Centre Stage at PACC's Textile Art Exhibition

The Performance Arts Culture Cessnock (PACC) is set to showcase a stunning collection of contemporary Australian quilts that challenge traditional perceptions of textile art. Ahead of the Curve, opening 29 November and running through to 31 January 2026, brings together works from some of Australia's most innovative quilters in an exhibition that celebrates both technical mastery and creative experimentation.

Tara Glastonbury, Bloomin’ Lot, 2025

Curated by Tara Glastonbury, the exhibition centres on the curve as a powerful element in modern quilting—a shape that presents both technical challenges and extraordinary creative possibilities. Unlike traditional geometric quilting patterns, curves demand precision, patience, and a willingness to embrace risk. The featured artists have risen to this challenge, producing works that range from boldly improvised compositions to meticulously planned geometric designs.

The exhibition brings together an impressive roster of Australian quilters, including Wendy Nutt, Grace Di Muzio, Ruth de Vos, Rachaeldaisy Dodd, Pip Porter, Kate Henderson, Jess Wheelahan, Jeanne Treleaven, Pat Forster, Diana Vandeyar, Caroline Hadley, Brenda Gael Smith, and Belinda Betts. Each artist brings their unique vision to the exploration of curved forms, demonstrating how this single design element can inspire endless variation.

What makes Ahead of the Curve particularly compelling is how it positions quilting as a dynamic contemporary art form rather than merely a craft tradition. The works on display chart a course through improvisation and precision, boldness and restraint, revealing the curve as more than just a visual motif—it becomes a way to rethink process, embrace complexity, and expand the language of textile art itself.

For those who appreciate contemporary art or are curious about the evolution of traditional crafts, this exhibition offers a fascinating glimpse into how Australian makers are pushing boundaries and redefining their medium. The fluidity and structural complexity of curves provide rich territory for creative inquiry, and these quilters have embraced that challenge with fearless innovation.

Ahead of the Curve runs at PACC in Cessnock from 29 November until 31 January 2026. During the holiday period, PACC will be closed midday 24 December 2025 and reopen 9am Monday 5 January 2026. Visit www.mypacc.com.au/Whats-on/25-Ahead-of-the-Curve for more information.

High Heels, High Hopes!

Kinky Boots Struts into Newcastle

Step into a world of high heels, high hopes, and higher spirits this December, when Newcastle’s Chookas Entertainment presents the Tony Award-winning musical Kinky Boots at the Civic Theatre. From 18 to 21 December, audiences will be swept up in a feel-good celebration of self-expression, courage, and community, perfectly timed for the festive season.

Kinky Boots began as a 2005 film based on the true story of a small Northampton shoe factory that found new life producing bespoke boots for drag performers. It charmed audiences around the world and in 2013, the story took to the Broadway stage, reimagined as a high-energy musical.

With songs by pop icon Cyndi Lauper in her first foray into musical theatre and a script by acclaimed playwright Harvey Fierstein, Kinky Boots became an instant sensation. It went on to win six Tony Awards, a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album and three Olivier Awards.

“Kinky Boots is more than just a musical. It’s a message of love, acceptance, and the power of being unapologetically yourself,” says Jody Miller, Chookas Entertainment’s Producer. “We are thrilled to bring this story to life in Newcastle – it’s a show with a whole lot of heart, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience the magic.”

Kinky Boots tells the uplifting story of Charlie Price, a young man who inherits his father’s struggling shoe factory. When he meets Lola, a fabulous drag performer with a flair for fashion and an eye for opportunity who’s also in need of sturdy stilettos, their unlikely partnership gives rise to a bold new business. Together, they set out to create a line of sturdy stilettos for men and, in doing so, find the courage to step out of the shadows and embrace who they truly are.

This production is a landmark moment for Chookas Entertainment, marking the company’s debut production on the Civic’s main stage and their biggest show to date. For Producer Jody Miller, it’s a thrilling leap that represents years of hard work, risk, and belief in the power of community theatre to inspire and connect.

Over the past five years, Chookas has staged 18 productions, including Legally Blonde, Heathers, Chicago, Annie, and Be More Chill The company’s reputation for excellence and for providing opportunities to performers at all stages of their careers has made Chookas a vital part of the local theatre ecosystem.

“This is the first time we’ve mounted a production on the main stage at the Civic

Theatre,” Jody says. “Our shows at the Playhouse have all but sold out, so this feels like a natural next step.”

The decision to take on Kinky Boots came down to both heart and strategy.

“We wanted to do something different, something that felt right for Chookas. Kinky Boots ticks every box, it’s diverse, inclusive, fun, and filled with joy. Who else in Newcastle would do Kinky Boots? It’s the perfect fit for us.”

For Jody, the production is also a balancing act between creativity and family life.

“Our daughter, Felicity, is 17 months old, and I’m on maternity leave, so it didn’t make sense to do six productions a year like we used to. Instead, we decided to go big, one huge show that really makes an impact.”

“With 40% of tickets already sold, we’ve already got office Christmas parties booking in. It’s ideal for the festive season - it’s just great fun; the kind of show that makes people leave the theatre smiling.”

At the helm of Kinky Boots is an exceptional creative team, bringing together some of Newcastle’s most talented theatre professionals. Director Maddie Watts and Music Director Luke Baker lead the charge, guiding a dynamic cast through a production that’s equal parts hilarious, heartfelt, and high-heeled. They are joined by Assistant Director Theo Williams, a Newcastle entertainer currently performing in the national tour of RENT the musical.

Maddie Watts is no stranger to the Hunter’s performing arts scene. A Newcastle-based director, vocal coach, and educator with over a decade of industry experience, Maddie holds a Bachelor of Music (Voice) from the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music and a Diploma of Musical Theatre from Brent Street. Over the past eight years, Maddie has directed, choreographed, and musically directed a diverse range of productions across the region, from The SpongeBob Musical and Into the Woods to A Chorus Line, Legally Blonde, and Annie

“I’ve always been drawn to productions that celebrate individuality and connection,” Maddie says. “That’s the heartbeat of Kinky Boots."

"It’s a story that tells people it’s okay to be different, to be bold, and to own who you are."

Maddie’s passion for youth and community theatre has shaped her as both an educator and an artist. Having taught voice and musical theatre for over 11 years, she continues to nurture emerging talent across the region. And with Kinky Boots having a cast of 40, ranging

in ages from 11 right through to mid-50s, her experience allows her to guide performers of all levels with patience, insight, and a deep understanding of how to bring out each individual’s best while weaving them seamlessly into the story.

“We’ve got an awesome cast – bursting with energy and big personalities. We have fantastic vocalists – stunning and rich voices – they bring the vocal energy, they’re just incredible. I can’t wait to see them shine on stage. Not only is this production visually exciting but it has fun, upbeat numbers and a really important message. It’s heart-warming. You won’t leave the theatre questioning your existence – you’ll leave smiling, feeling joyful – so important -especially around Christmas.”

While Kinky Boots dazzles visually, it’s the music that gives it soul and that’s where Music Director Luke Baker steps in. An accomplished musician, educator, and musical theatre veteran with a Bachelor of Music from the University of Newcastle and over a decade of experience as a conductor, arranger, and performer, Luke’s musical direction is the backbone of this production. It’s also his debut Chookas production.

His credits span a range of local and regional theatre, including The Addams Family,

and Shrek the Musical

Known for his collaborative approach and high musical standards, Luke has built a reputation as one of Newcastle’s most respected music directors.

Luke is leading a live 11-piece band, complemented by additional vocalists to enrich the sound.

“It’s a strong cast vocally, which makes my job easier,” he says.

“We had over 200 people audition, and the dance call was absolutely packed. It’s brought new faces into the company and created such a positive, creative buzz.”

Asked to pick a favourite number, Luke doesn’t hesitate. “‘Sex Is in the Heel’ and ‘Land of Lola’ - those are huge moments. They take you from the factory floor to this otherworldly space filled with colour and confidence. It’s a real musical journey.”

Above all, Luke hopes audiences walk away uplifted. “Whether you’re a lifelong musical fan or it’s your first time at the theatre, you’ll have a great time. The story’s message - that you can change the world when you change your mind - feels especially powerful right now.”

For Luke, who saw the original Australian run of Kinky Boots in Sydney, the show’s score is irresistible.

“From a musical theatre perspective, I’ve always loved it,” he says. “The score is pure Cyndi Lauper - it’s pop-infused, full of 80s synths, and incredibly catchy. It’s the kind of music that makes you want to dance in your chair. But it also tells a really heartfelt story about community, self-expression, and being true to yourself.”

The musical demands both technical skill and emotional depth from its performers.

“One of my biggest focuses has been ensuring that the characterisation comes through in the singing as much as the acting,” Luke explains. “The show jumps between very different worlds, from upper-class London to a working-class factory, and we’ve worked hard to make those transitions feel authentic.”

The glittering heart of Kinky lies with its vibrant cast led by Tyler Chapman as the glamorous and fearless Lola, and Zac Smith as the determined but conflicted Charlie Price. Together their chemistry, charisma, and emotional range bring the story’s message of acceptance to life. They’re supported by Siddha Crossley as Lauren, Brynn Hulls as Nicola, and Chris Porters as Don and an incredible ensemble of actors, vocalists and dancers.

For Tyler Chapman, stepping into Lola’s iconic heels has been both a dream role and a personal journey.

“Lola is such a complex, beautiful character,” he says. “She’s fierce, funny, and fabulous, but she’s also deeply human. Beneath the sequins and sass, there’s so much heart.”

Tyler’s rich performance background adds depth to his portrayal. A dynamic Newcastlebased performer since his teens, Tyler’s credits include Spring Awakening, Mamma Mia!, Chicago, Legally Blonde, and Catch Me If You Can. He’s also appeared on Season 10 of Australian Idol and toured Europe and the UK with Australian pop artist BEKS.

Playing Lola also comes with its challenges.

“Aside from dancing in high heels and wigs for over two hours, the biggest challenge is telling both Lola’s story and Simon’s - her dedragged persona -simultaneously and truthfully. Simon’s experiences shape who Lola becomes, and Lola’s exterior strength gives Simon the

courage to pursue change. Both narratives need to be communicated for the story’s message to really land.”

“Playing Lola means representing courage, the courage to live authentically and to stand tall even when the world tries to bring you down,” he shares. “It’s a role that demands honesty and empathy.”

He’s equally clear on why audiences shouldn’t miss this production.

“You’d be seriously missing out if you didn’t see Kinky Boots. It’s hilarious, chaotic, and heartfelt from start to finish. But more than that, it’s a show that can truly change minds. I remember seeing it in Sydney when I was 17 and it gave me a whole new perspective on who I wanted to be, both on stage and off. That’s the kind of heart this show brings.”

Opposite Lola is Zac Smith as Charlie Price, a role that grounds the show’s emotion in genuine, relatable humanity. For Zac, stepping into Charlie Price’s shoes is both a long-held dream and a personal connection.

“Charlie has been a dream role for years,” he says. “Tyler and I have joked about playing Charlie and Lola together since we first met back in 2019, so finally bringing that to life feels really special. It’s such an uplifting story, and

Charlie’s journey from resistance to passion is one I truly connect with.”

“On the surface, Charlie’s a bit of a grump, but underneath he’s got a big heart. He’s awkward, determined, and genuinely funny when he lets himself relax. Watching him rediscover what lights him up again is one of my favourite parts of the show.”

Zac’s impressive background brings added depth to the role. An award-winning theatre director, actor, and designer, he has worked on more than fifty stage and film productions, including Little Shop of Horrors, Merrily We Roll Along, Legally Blonde, PUFFS, and The Father. His directing credits include acclaimed productions with Opera Hunter, Chookas Entertainment, and Newcastle Theatre Company, and his work has been recognised with multiple CONDA Awards.

When it comes to why audiences should see Kinky Boots, Zac is passionate.

“In a world constantly focused on our differences, Kinky Boots reminds us that kindness and acceptance matter. How someone else lives their life shouldn’t affect how you live yours and at the core, we’re all the same.”

As Kinky Boots prepares to hit the Civic stage, it’s clear this is more than just another

production for Chookas Entertainment. It’s a celebration - of theatre, of self-expression, and of the incredible local talent that keeps Newcastle’s arts scene sparkling.

“We want people to recognise that a night out at the theatre can be for everyone,” Jody says. “It’s not just for theatre lovers - it’s for friends, families, work groups. Go out for dinner, grab a drink, see a show. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate Christmas together.”

“Kinky Boots is about finding your place in the world and having the courage to dance your way there.”

So, this December, slip into your fiercest stilettos and strut into the Civic Theatre for Kinky Boots - a dazzling, sequin-strewn celebration of laughter, love, and infectious pop beats that’ll have you dancing in your seat and singing all the way home!

Sketch On Straight Off the Pencil

Young artists from the Place Based Abilities Program share their creativity, connection, and joy through the Placed to Speak podcast.

Placed to Speak podcast continues to shine a light on the creativity and confidence of young people in the Place Based Abilities Program, and Episode 3, Sketch On – Straight Off the Pencil, might just be the most colourful one yet.

The Hunter Valley's biggest LEGO® event returns to Maitland High School on Sunday, 23 November, bringing together builders of all ages for a day of creative fun.

Running from 10am to 4pm, the Maitland Brick Show features spectacular LEGO® displays, a massive build area with thousands of bricks, and vendors selling new and retired sets, individual bricks, and rare minifigures. Kids can explore the dedicated Duplo Zone while families try their luck in the Monster LEGO® Raffle. Entry starts from $10 per person (children under three free), with family passes available from $35. Pre-booking through www. trybooking.com/CYDTO is recommended for staggered entry times. Best of all, every ticket supports The Maitland Hospital Volunteers Inc., making this colourful community event a chance to play with purpose. You’ll find the Maitland Brick Show at Maitland High School, Pierce Street, East Maitland.

Hosted by Ness, this episode introduces Emily and Dom, two talented young artists whose passion for drawing leaps straight off the page (and sometimes the iPad). Together, they chat about their inspirations, their favourite characters, and what keeps them creating.

For Emily, art has always been about connection. “It was the influence of my pop,” she shared.

“When I was younger, he asked if I wanted to draw, and I just did!” That simple moment sparked a lifelong love for art. These days, she’s a self-proclaimed perfectionist who enjoys experimenting with digital tools and bright colours. “I like to get all the line art and colours just right,” she laughed.

Dom’s creativity was also sparked by animation. “I used to draw SpongeBob, The Simpsons, and Pokémon,” he said proudly.

Over time, his skills have grown from sketching in notebooks to producing digital art and even selling his framed pieces.

“It feels good knowing someone might have my art hanging up somewhere.” –Dom

Between plenty of laughter and a few “skibidi” jokes, the group explore how drawing helps them relax, express themselves, and build confidence. Ness’s warm questions and the playful banter between friends capture the spirit of connection that defines Placed to Speak. It’s a conversation full of personality and heart, showing just how creativity can bring people together.

Delivered through a collaboration between The Place: Charlestown Community Centre and ReadyUp Skills, the Place Based Abilities Program helps young people with disability build skills, share their voices, and inspire pride in the community.

Wholesome, funny, and full of heart, Sketch On – Straight Off the Pencil is the kind of listening that leaves you smiling and maybe reaching for a pencil yourself.

Empowering Communities:

Hunter Adults Financial Collaborative

Makes

In the heart of the Hunter region, a remarkable not-for-profit organisation is transforming lives one person at a time. The Hunter Adults Financial Collaborative (HAFC) supports financially disadvantaged adults across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and the Lower Hunter, helping them develop business ideas, find employment, and achieve self-sufficiency. Since its establishment in April 2022, HAFC has been on a mission to help unemployed, disadvantaged, and often isolated adults gain meaningful employment. Through personalised training, mentoring support, micro-loans, and assistance with business paperwork and marketing strategies, HAFC provides comprehensive support that makes real change possible. What makes this organisation truly special is that all board members are volunteers, meaning every dollar raised goes directly into programs that help local people in need.

The organisation's latest initiative, the "Survive the Future" Project, exemplifies HAFC's innovative approach to community empowerment. This project focuses on upskilling long-term unemployed and isolated refugee women in sewing capabilities, with the goal of forming a sustainable sewing cluster that provides both employment and community connection.

Thanks to generous sponsorship from Newcastle Council, Orica, Hillview Op Shop, and the Ian and Shirley Norman Foundation, HAFC has successfully trained multiple groups of refugee women to achieve professional sewing standards. The community response has been overwhelming, with locals donating 19 sewing machines, two overlockers, and a wealth of sewing materials, including fabric, scissors, threads, and needles.

This training has now culminated in the launch of Clothing Alteration Services

Help us make a difference in the life of unemployed and isolated Refugee women by taking advantage of our highly skilled sewing cluster for all your alterations and repair needs. 0407 290 861 | info @ hunteradultsfc.org.au www.clothingalterationservices.com

(www.clothingalterationservices.com), an online business offering alterations, repairs, upcycling, and clothing recycling services— including school uniform alterations. State Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp officially launched the service at the Ian and Shirley Norman Foundation building in Hunter Street, marking a significant milestone for the project.

The sewing cluster operates from the Survivors R Us workshop in Cardiff two days a week, where team members work on customer orders under the expert supervision of highly qualified trainer Lin Trigg. Federal Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy MP recently visited the workshop, witnessing firsthand the incredible impact this initiative is having on the lives of refugee women.

Led by team leader Faranaz, the cluster is currently focusing on school uniform alterations and repairs, connecting with uniform shops throughout the region to provide essential services while creating meaningful employment opportunities. The business offers convenient pickup and delivery for all customer orders across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.

HAFC's work extends far beyond sewing training. The organisation continues to offer free services, including resume writing, interview preparation, and assistance in starting or growing small businesses. Their track record speaks volumes, with numerous successful business launches including Golden Star Cleaning Service and various other microenterprises.

This is community support at its finest—local volunteers, generous sponsors, and dedicated participants working together to create lasting change. By supporting HAFC through donations, volunteering, employing participants, or becoming a sponsor, you can help build a stronger, more inclusive Hunter community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

For more information or to support HAFC's mission, email info@hunteradultsfc.org.au or call 0407 290 861.

Brilliance at Thistle Hill

In the heart of the Hunter Valley, where vine-striped hills meet endless sky, Thistle Hill stands as a testament to what happens when vision meets opportunity. This isn't just another accommodation listing; it's a fully realised hospitality dream, wrapped in 15 beautifully appointed rooms and generating approximately $800,000 in annual revenue. McGrath Rural presents an estate where the business case is as compelling as the sunsets. Fifty guests can be hosted across three distinct dwellings, with the property's pavilion serving as the centrepiece for weddings and retreats that have built a loyal following. Resort-style pools and landscaped gardens aren't mere aesthetics; they're the backdrop to repeat bookings and strong forward momentum that speaks to years of careful cultivation.

The brilliance lies in the property’s flexibility. Hands-on operators will find a canvas for culinary experiences, cellar-door tastings,

and boutique wine development from established vines. Those preferring a passive approach can retain the existing management team and watch the returns flow. The modern fivebedroom owners' residence offers lifestyle luxury or additional income potential when configured for guests, while Lavender Cottage's two king suites cater to premium stays and VIP experiences.

Strong infrastructure, discrete back-of-house operations, and an established reputation create a rare combination. With clear expansion pathways into food and wine offerings, this is more than a purchase—it's an invitation to steward a thriving business in one of Australia's most celebrated wine regions. Romance and reliable returns rarely align this perfectly.

NEWCASTLE AND UBE MARK 45 YEARS OF SISTER CITY PARTNERSHIP

The City of Newcastle will commemorate a significant milestone this month, celebrating 45 years of Sister City friendship with Ube City in Japan—a relationship built on shared values, cultural exchange and mutual respect.

Established on 21 November 1980, the partnership was championed by thenNewcastle Lord Mayor Joy Cummings, who recognised the natural connection between the two similarly sized harbour cities with their shared industrial heritage. Sister City relationships are designed to foster cultural, educational and economic ties between communities while promoting peaceful coexistence globally.

To honour this anniversary, Councillors Jenny Barrie and Mark Brooker will lead a Newcastle delegation to Ube from 31 October to 2 November, following an invitation from Ube Mayor Keiji Shinozaki.

"Our long-running student exchange program has seen young people from both

cities immerse themselves in each other's cultures, strengthening connections and promoting mutual respect," Cr. Barrie said. "We are proud to celebrate this milestone and continue building the next chapter of our relationship, one that embraces innovation, creativity and mutual respect."

Cr. Barrie emphasised that the visit would reaffirm the enduring friendship through cultural exchange while also exploring opportunities to strengthen investment and trade ties with Japanese industry partners.

"The partnership between Newcastle-based cleantech company MCi Carbon and Mitsubishi Ube Cement Corporation is a wonderful example of how collaboration between our cities can deliver real-world innovation and create economic opportunity," she said.

Earlier this year, Mitsubishi Ube Cement Corporation invested US$5 million in MCi Carbon and signed a long-term collaboration agreement to accelerate the decarbonisation of Japan's cement and concrete industries.

Looking ahead, a notice of motion will be presented at Council calling for the establishment of a Newcastle-Ube Sister City Committee to explore opportunities for growth as the 50th anniversary approaches in 2030. The committee would include Councillors, business and industry representatives, educational institutions and community

members interested in strengthening international connections.

"For 45 years, our relationship with Ube has symbolised how people-to-people connections can foster broader cultural, educational and economic benefits," Cr. Brooker said.

"We are the custodians of this enduring relationship and look forward to keeping the momentum going as we approach the 50th anniversary. This milestone is not just a celebration of our shared history, but a springboard for future collaboration."

Over the decades, Newcastle and Ube have developed strong connections through education, youth exchange, art, sport and innovation—reflecting Newcastle's broader role in establishing the Australian Sister Cities Association, which emerged from the first Australian Sister Cities Conference held in Newcastle in 1979.

FIVE YEARS OF LIGHTHOUSE ARTS: CELEBRATING CREATIVITY AND COMMUNITY

Five years after opening its doors, Lighthouse Arts has become one of Newcastle's quiet success stories, a creative hub born from local resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Established through the City of Newcastle's Industry Response to COVID-19, the initiative is led by Hunter Writers' Centre in partnership with the Port Authority of NSW. Since its inception, the project has hosted more than 700 artist residencies, welcoming creatives from across Newcastle, the Hunter and around Australia.

"Lighthouse Arts began as an ambitious idea in the wake of COVID-19—a response to the impact the pandemic had on artists and the local creative community," said Katherine McLean, Director of Hunter Writers' Centre.

"It was about reopening a place that carries Newcastle's layered story—geological, Indigenous, colonial and maritime—and adding a new chapter through creativity and the arts. Five years later, it's a living, working example of how arts and culture can bring people together and reimagine one of our city's most iconic places."

The five-year milestone will be celebrated with a Community Open Day on Saturday, 15 November, featuring resident artists, alums works and local music.

The ongoing development of Lighthouse Arts reflects Hunter Writers' Centre's strategic goals to support creative practitioners, strengthen partnerships and ensure long-term sustainability across the region's literary and arts initiatives.

YOUTH WEEK GRANTS ON OFFER FOR LAKE MAC EVENTS

Lake Macquarie City Council is offering grants of up to $1500 for events and activities supporting Youth Week 2026.

Held 16-25 April, Youth Week is Australia's largest annual celebration of people aged 12-24 and is expected to include numerous activities across Lake Macquarie. Previous events have featured colour runs, art workshops, songwriting contests, fitness sessions, youth festivals and outdoor markets.

"We are open to any ideas that engage and celebrate our young people," Manager Community Partnerships Matt Holloway said.

"Activities funded through the grants could see young people share ideas, attend live events, have their voices heard, showcase their talents or take part in competitions, but most importantly, they should be positive and fun for those involved."

Council will host a Youth Week Grants Workshop from 10-11:30am on Monday, 3 November at the Landcare and Sustainable Living Centre, umali barai-ku, at Booragul, to help guide applicants.

"Supporting initiatives like Youth Week is part of Council's draft Youth Strategy 2025–2029," Mr Holloway said.

"It outlines a commitment to ensuring young people can participate in the city's cultural life, gather in safe and inclusive environments and celebrate cultural diversity."

Applications are open from 3 November to 19 December. Visit www.lakemac.com.au for more information and to apply.

Karen Partington began her local government career as a cashier 25 years ago, collecting fees for land rates and dog registrations. Today, she's collecting awards for her dedication to both her career and community.

Ms Partington, now Lake Macquarie City Council's Acting Director Planning For the Future, received a Women of Distinction Award in the 2025 Ministers' Awards for Women in Local Government on Thursday.

The award recognised Ms Partington's "exceptional innovation, integrity and initiative" and her positive influence on others throughout her quarter-century career spanning strategic land-use planning, infrastructure, environmental systems and asset management.

Beyond her professional achievements, Ms Partington played a key role in establishing Spark, a networking group for women at Council, and championed increasing female participation in non-traditional roles.

CEO Tony Farrell said Ms Partington's tenure had been marked by her ability to "inspire, empower and create lasting change".

"Karen's work has led to a sustained shift in gender balance, a culture of inclusion and a legacy of opportunity for future leaders," he said.

"She is deeply respected by her peers, Council's executive and elected officials, and most importantly, by the people she leads."

Ms Partington said she was "extremely humbled" to win the award.

"Working in an organisation of around 1300 employees, and given the breadth and complexity of our work, I'm very aware that everything we do requires a team of people," she said.

"Without that team and our shared vision and values for our city, we achieve very little. I share a small part in a broader team effort."

Ms Partington credited the diversity of her career and her accumulated knowledge as factors that keep her motivated.

"Having a real impact on local communities by providing and improving our services is also really gratifying," she said.

"I always feel most proud watching our community use new businesses, shared paths, parks and playgrounds that I've had a hand in planning and delivering."

Currently, her focus is on supporting Council through a transitional period as it appoints a new CEO following Morven Cameron's September resignation.

"There's lots to be done and many challenges ahead," Ms Partington said. "But that's what makes local government so interesting and rewarding."

FOSTER

CARERS are ORDINARY PEOPLE DOING EXTRAORDINARY THINGS in your local community and we urgently need more of them.

Fostering does not have to be full-time. Emergency Carers look after children and young people removed from unsafe situations for short period while a carer or family member is being located. Being taken from home and family in these circumstances is traumatic for children and the Emergency Foster Carers usually need to be available to take a child at any time though you can let us know when there are times you are not going to be available.

At Key Assets Australia, we provide our foster carers with ongoing training, 24/7 support, a dedicated social worker, and an allowance. We hold regular events and connect foster carers with each other for extra support.

Anyone can apply to become a foster carer. We celebrate diversity and welcome enquiries from people who are single or in a relationship, homeowners or renting. Your culture, religion or sexual orientation doesn’t affect your eligibility for foster care. We believe the diversity of our carers is vital when finding the best possible family for a child.

If you feel you have the love, space, and energy to provide a safe and happy home, then we would love to talk to you about the options of emergency care, respite care, short-term, or long-term care.

Hunter Drama's November Triple Threat

psychological thriller. When teenagers commit an unspeakable crime and attempt to cover it up, their lies spiral into a chilling game of manipulation and control. Hunter Drama's Actors Company brings this razor-sharp exploration of morality and friendship to life in what promises to be a haunting production.

The month concludes on 23 November with Fragments at the Civic Playhouse. Hunter Drama's elite Performance Troupe—an auditiononly program—presents a bold collection of scenes exploring fractured friendships, memory, loss and identity. Each fragment weaves together to create a powerful theatrical experience.

"These three productions highlight the incredible depth and diversity of our young performers," says Artistic Director James Chapman.

Holding On: When Every Object Tells a Story

Hi, my name is Chloe, and I am a hoarder—but not with piles of newspapers blocking the door. For me, it’s about sentimentality. I keep every piece of my child’s artwork and every memento from the shows I’ve worked on. I save reminders of long-gone relatives, including their antique furniture, because of the memories attached.

I suspect this tendency runs in my family. Among my grandfather’s belongings, I’ve found

items from relatives long gone. There’s an oil painting of my great-grandfather, who was a firefighter, looking dapper in his uniform. There’s also a red velvet box of letters from his courtship with my great-grandmother, beginning in 1911 and continuing through the start of World War II.

With all these family treasures, I’ve come to value the irreplaceable history and memories each item represents. But as my child and I make new memories, my collection keeps growing. Even with a large shed, special items still get tucked away. I know I should sort through everything and let some things go, but

it’s always tricky. Every piece brings a wave of memories and emotions, which makes it hard to part with them. My struggle isn’t just with clutter, but with letting go of what these things mean to me.

Most people can relate to keeping family things. I cherish every card from relatives who have passed, as well as letters from childhood friends, even my teen diaries. Any secret I didn't want people to know, I would write in broken French, using a pocket French-to-English dictionary. I don't speak French, so without the translation, I couldn't tell you what it said. Ironically, my mother spoke French, so nothing was really a secret.

I even find it difficult to part with things without that family connection. When I moved back from the US after following the wrong boy yet again, the first job I took on Australian soil was working the red carpet at the AFI Awards. Heath Ledger was nominated and won for Brokeback Mountain. He also accepted an award on behalf of Rachel Griffiths, who wasn’t there.

After I took him offstage for his interviews, he handed me both winning envelopes and asked me to throw them out, so he didn’t have to hold them. There was also a hilarious moment on the carpet between him and Magda Szubanski, which I encourage you to find. I still have those envelopes. Not long after those awards, Heath was gone. I can’t bring myself to throw them away.

Recently, when faced with a decision about moving my grandmother’s large buffet, I was reminded again of how challenging it is to let go. Although it wasn’t a traditional heirloom, it was still a connection to her. Letting go was easier when I found Flip2thrive, an online furniture flipper. She is a mum who uses the money she earns to save for her dream house.

Giving the piece a new life helped me balance the importance of holding onto memories and learning to pass things on. I can't wait to see what she does with it.

November Horoscopes

WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH

STAR OF THE MONTH SCORPIO

23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER

Happy birthday season, Scorpio! This is your month to shine, transform, and set intentions for your personal new year. November brings powerful energy for new beginnings, particularly around the New Moon on the 20th—a perfect time to manifest your deepest desires. Your natural intensity amplifies with Mars in your sign until the 4th, giving you unstoppable drive and magnetic appeal. Career projects you've envisioned finally gain traction, bringing satisfaction even if financial rewards aren't immediate. Creative pursuits flourish beautifully this month. Romance percolates with passion, and Venus enhances your allure from the 26th onward. Singles radiate confidence that attracts potential partners, while couples discover renewed intimacy.

SAGITTARIUS 22 NOVEMBER–21 DECEMBER

November asks for patience as Mercury retrograde in your sign from the 9th slows your usual rapid pace. Communication mishaps and travel delays are likely—triple-check details and allow extra time for everything. The Sun enters your sign on the 21st, revitalising your energy and optimism for the weeks ahead. Career matters show mixed results; while progress may feel sluggish, laying groundwork now supports future success.

CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY

November brings positive momentum to your ambitious pursuits, Capricorn. Mars supports your goals throughout the month, providing you with the energy and determination to tackle challenging projects. The financial outlook remains stable, with opportunities for growth through strategic partnerships.

AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY

November invites you to strike a balance between innovation and introspection, Aquarius. Your social sector lights up early in the month, bringing invitations and opportunities to connect with interesting people. However, Mercury retrograde from the 9th suggests some friendships or group projects need reassessment. Career matters require careful navigation.

PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH

November offers opportunities for manifestation and emotional growth, Pisces. Career advancements are possible, particularly if you've been working behind the scenes on important projects. Jupiter's position supports happiness at home, creating harmony in your domestic sphere. Financial challenges may arise early in the month, necessitating practical solutions and potentially reducing unnecessary expenses. Your intuitive abilities heighten significantly; pay attention to your dreams and gut feelings.

ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL

November brings mixed energy as you navigate Mercury retrograde from the 9th to the 29th. Travel plans may encounter delays, so be sure to allow extra time and have backup arrangements in place. Your social calendar fills early in the month with invitations and gatherings, but you'll crave moments of solitude to recharge. Career momentum builds despite communication hiccups—focus on completing tasks rather than starting new projects.

TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY

Your professional life takes centre stage this November, with opportunities to showcase your expertise and dedication. However, Mercury's retrograde journey through most of the month suggests caution with contracts and major purchases—wait until after the 29th if possible. Financial matters require careful attention, particularly in the middle of the month when unexpected expenses may arise.

GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE

November proves favourable for Gemini natives, with the Sun's transit bringing enhanced focus and mental clarity. Your natural communication skills shine, though Mercury retrograde from the 9th reminds you to double-check messages and avoid assumptions. Creative projects gain momentum, and collaborative efforts yield positive results. Travel opportunities emerge, particularly around the New Moon on the 20th—perfect timing for both short trips and planning future adventures.

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

This month brings emotional intensity and opportunities for profound personal growth. Career matters require extra attention in the first half, with potential workplace challenges or changes testing your resilience. The Full Moon on the 5th illuminates relationship dynamics—use this time for honest reflection about what you truly need from partnerships. Financial stability remains within reach through careful budgeting and avoiding impulsive spending.

LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST

November brings a boost to your confidence and magnetism, Leo. Social invitations abound early in the month, putting you in the spotlight where you naturally thrive. Career progress continues steadily, with recognition for your hard work likely around mid-month. Mercury retrograde may cause minor communication snags, but your natural charm helps smooth over any misunderstandings.

VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER

November presents a mix of introspection and forward momentum. Life lessons take centre stage as you reflect on recent experiences and how they've shaped your growth. Career opportunities emerge, particularly in the second half of the month when Mercury is direct on the 29th and clears the fog. Workplace relationships require diplomacy— avoid getting drawn into office politics. Financially, conservative approaches serve you best; this isn't the time for risky investments.

LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER

The cosmos favours you this November, Libra, with opportunities for growth across multiple life areas. Financial prospects look strong, with potential gains through investments or unexpected sources. Career advancement is possible, particularly if you maintain clear communication with colleagues. Your relationship sector glows with warmth— existing partnerships deepen, while singles may encounter someone intriguing through social activities. Balance remains your keyword; avoid overcommitting to projects or people.

HUNTER HOMES & Lifestyle

East Maitland Set for Major Transformation

Maitland City Council has unveiled ambitious plans to reshape East Maitland over the next two decades, with a draft structure plan projecting the need for 4,000 new homes to accommodate significant population growth.

The East Maitland Catalyst Area (EMCA) Structure Plan, which councillors approved for public consultation last month, estimates the area could grow by more than 6,000 residents over the next 20 years. This represents one of the most significant land use changes in Maitland in decades.

The comprehensive plan will guide the delivery of sustainable development across East Maitland, centring growth around existing services, amenities, employment hubs and transport links. It proposes changes to land use and zoning that will enable residential infill and mixed-use, higher-density development throughout the precinct.

"Our vision for Maitland is a thriving city with connected communities," said Maitland City Council Manager Strategic Planning Brett Gardiner.

"This draft structure plan for East Maitland is looking to evolve the form and function of the area so that it can support new homes, new jobs, a robust economy, improved infrastructure and enhanced services."

The East Maitland Catalyst Area stretches from Victoria Street train station in the north to Metford train station in the southeast, and southwest to Ashtonfield and Green Hills. It's already one of Maitland's most vital employment centres, with more than 2,500 people commuting to work in the area daily and 591 businesses operating within the precinct as of 2021.

The NSW Government first identified East Maitland as a catalyst area in its Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan 2036 back in 2018. Last year, Maitland City Council received approximately $300,000 in state government funding to develop the detailed land use plan.

Mr Gardiner emphasised that the structure plan aims to ensure "the area's residential and demographic growth is balanced with strong environmental, social and economic outcomes."

Council is now seeking community feedback through a 28-day public exhibition period, with pop-up engagement sessions planned at Maitland Hospital, Stockland Green Hills and East Maitland Library. Consultation closes on Monday, 21 November.

Beat the Heat with Smart Window Solutions

As Newcastle prepares for another scorching summer, Windsor Blinds, Awnings and Shutters is helping Hunter region residents transform their homes into cool sanctuaries while keeping energy costs down.

With almost 80 years of experience in window covering solutions, the Cardiff-based manufacturer understands the challenges Australian summers present. Owner Craig Young, who learned the business at the knee of his father, industry innovator B.J. Young, knows that innovative window solutions are essential for comfortable living in our climate.

"Energy efficiency is at the forefront of everyone's minds now," explains Craig's wife Zdenka, who runs the company alongside him. "With rising energy costs and increasingly hot summers, people are looking for ways to keep their homes cool without running the air conditioning constantly. The right window coverings can make a huge difference."

Windsor's premium plantation shutters remain a summer favourite, offering superior insulation and light control. Available in various timbers, Polymer, or T5 grade Aluminium with market-leading paint coating, these custom-made shutters create an effective barrier against the harsh Australian sun while maintaining airflow when partially opened.

The company's Duo Roller Blinds provide a practical day/night solution, with a screen option that filters harsh sunlight during the day while maintaining your view, and a block-out option for comfortable sleeping on hot summer nights. The contemporary streamlined design complements any décor while delivering serious temperature control benefits.

For outdoor entertainment spaces, Ziptrak Blinds are proving increasingly popular. These locally manufactured blinds enclose alfresco areas, protecting against intense summer heat and UV rays while keeping insects at bay. They're perfect for extending your living space outdoors during the warmer months.

"We're also seeing growing interest in smart automation options," notes Zdenka. "Imagine your blinds automatically adjusting throughout the day to block the sun's harshest rays, helping maintain a comfortable temperature inside. It's about working smarter, not harder."

Windsor works directly with builders on new builds and offers bespoke solutions for existing homes, all backed by their reputation for quality and customer service. With a team boasting decades of combined experience and using only the highest quality components designed for Australian conditions, Windsor ensures long-lasting performance when you need it most.
