SPRING ADVENTURES

Maitland’s Epic Events Calendar Unveiled

From the Editor

September arrives with the promise of a cultural renaissance, and this month's issue captures Newcastle at its most vibrant. As winter finally loosens its grip, our city prepares to burst into bloom with an extraordinary season of arts, entertainment, and community celebration that reinforces why Newcastle continues to punch above its weight on the national cultural stage.

Our cover story welcomes La Ronde to the magical Spiegeltent in Civic Park, marking not just the highlight of this year's New Annual Festival but a testament to Newcastle's growing reputation as a destination for world-class entertainment. What strikes me most about Strut & Fret's latest creation is how it embodies the intimate magic that makes live performance so powerful.

With audiences seated 360 degrees around the action, watching Ukrainian pole masters, Belarusian hair-hanging record holders, and Spanish cabaret royalty perform literally above and around them, this isn't just a show – it's a complete sensory immersion. Read more on page 14.

The depth of our city’s entertainment offerings showcases a city firing on all creative cylinders. Ross Mueller's urgent comedy #This is Not Journalism (page 25) tackles the murky waters of media ethics with Newcastle's finest actors, while the beloved Mamma Mia! (page 24) promises to transform the Civic Theatre into the ultimate ABBA celebration. Diversity is perfectly captured in the Newcastle Pride Festival's month-long celebration of love and unity, running right through October with events ranging from drag storytimes to the spectacular Fair Day at Gregson Park (page 20).

Our regional connections shine through stories like the Hunter Valley Balloon Fiesta's "Balloons & Bubbles" theme (page 12), where passengers will literally blow bubbles while floating above the valley's vineyards, and Maitland's epic spring calendar (page 28) featuring everything from Riverlights' multicultural spectacular to hands-on bee experiences. Meanwhile, the heartwarming Grug exhibition at PACC (page 22) demonstrates how beloved Australian stories continue to captivate new generations.

What threads through all these stories is the sense that Newcastle has found its cultural confidence. Whether it's international circus artists choosing our city for their Australian debuts, acclaimed directors like Erin James bringing major musicals to our stages, or community festivals like Newcastle Pride growing from 5,000 to 13,000 attendees in just six years, there's an undeniable momentum building across our arts landscape.

As September unfolds with the New Annual Festival leading the charge, there's never been a better time to embrace everything our region offers. Enjoy!

Circus Spectacular

World's best acrobats descend on Newcastle for La Ronde

WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER IMAGES SOURCE STRUT & FRET

Newcastle’s annual love affair with Strut & Fret’s Spiegeltent continues this year with their latest sensation of circus, cabaret and spectacle, La Ronde. Forming the jewel in the crown of this year’s New Annual festival, La Ronde takes over Civic Park from 5 September to 5 October, fresh from 14 five-star reviews at

its Adelaide Fringe World Premiere and followup Darwin season. Prepare to be bedazzled, Newy, because this isn’t just a show - it’s a fullblown sensory experience!

International production powerhouse Strut & Fret is known for its unique brand of edge-ofyour-seat theatre hits, such as Blanc de Blanc, Blanc de Blanc Encore, and LIMBO. It has become a global success story, with shows concurrently running at permanent venues in

London and Brisbane’s West End. Their latest creation, La Ronde, brings together some of the planet’s most daring variety artists. Expect hair-hanging and mouth-hanging aerialists, flying-pole sensations, and vivacious European cabaret performers performing right above, around, and even among you.

According to producer Jess Copas, La Ronde is the crème de la crème of European, highly skilled circus talent, meets sultry cabaret,

but with a disco soundtrack energy. It’s also been created for audiences to experience in the round - on all four sides of the tent with a 360-degree view of the show that happens in, above and around the spectators.

“The big difference Newcastle will notice this year is that the set is a lot more intimate with people literally sitting 360 degrees around the action,” said Jess.

“It brings people closer than ever before to the action and creates an intimate connection between the performer and the audience. It makes the experience very special. And with so many aerials in the show, there’s a lot of looking up in awe - there really isn’t a bad seat in the house! It’s just one ‘wow’ moment after another, and accompanied by the vocals and soundtrack, it’s an incredibly uplifting night out for everyone!

“You’ll feel a bit of everything throughout the show - it’s intimate and elegant one moment, highenergy and hysterical the next! The skills performed in La Ronde truly the best in the world; they do things I didn’t even know were possible. It’s one of the most incredible casts I’ve worked with.”

apparatus of each of the artists into the show. Our artists are like family; we grow and flex together, meaning our productions remain fresh and unique.

Director Scott Maidment has assembled a cast of exceptional international performers, many of whom are making their Australian debut, in a high-energy fusion of circus, cabaret, comedy, and burlesque.

“We work with our cast to develop the acts that make it into the show. We go into rehearsal before each season starts and workshop the

Each act is wrapped in Strut & Fret’s signature flair—meticulous costuming, clever lighting, and seamless pacing that blends highadrenaline moments with playful interludes. The vintage, one-hundred-year-old Dutch Spiegeltent itself becomes part of the magic, with its mirrored walls, the warmth of timber, and intimate seating drawing the audience into the performance. With plush velvet drapes, air-conditioned comfort, and a central stage

that ensures no one is far from the action, the venue amplifies the show’s electricity and adds to the European ambience of decadent cabaret. Stepping into the Spiegeltent is like transporting yourself across time and space into a magical world that takes you out of your ordinary life for just a few hours.

Each year that the Spiegeltent lands in Newcastle, it draws a team of Novocastrian crew members keen to help set it up. Just like a giant Meccano set, there are unbelievably no tools, no screws, no nails, no bolts and no machinery required. Originally, all the pieces could be lifted by one person; today, it takes less than a dozen people to erect the tent.

“There is this wonderful sense of romantic achievement that people feel when they are a part of this traditional process,” said Scott. “It’s a beautiful heritage piece that people love to work on. It does take a lot of maintenance, though. There is always something being worked on and repaired.”

No expense is spared, and as with all Strut & Fret shows, there are very high-quality production values. The tent concept may remind audiences of a circus, but that’s where the comparison ends because the tent is so unique, extravagant, and romantic. Cabaret and variety are reminiscent of burlesque and fringe shows, but these shows sit well above that level of performance and are not burlesque. The content may be adults only, but it’s risqué, not rude, and the skill of the artists is world-class.

“The skill and talent of our performers, my creative team and our high production values set it way above the level of fringe or circus, and our shows can be seen again and again, with something new to enjoy every time you come.”

Newcastle audiences are very familiar with the Spiegeltent magic, having seen many shows multiple times, and La Ronde will not disappoint. La Ronde combines aesthetic elegance and heart-stopping spectacle with playful, interactive moments. The show’s energy is relentless, moving seamlessly between high-energy acrobatics, comedic relief, and cabaret charm. The audience’s reactions are just as much a part of the performance as the acts themselves, creating a festive and inclusive atmosphere where everyone is swept up in the fun. Don’t expect a narrative thread, this is pure spectacle – the best of the best, some of the most talented performers in the world, entertaining, thrilling, awe-inspiring, sexy and mesmerising!

Among the headline performers that Maidment has scoured the world for is Sergiy Mishchurenko, on an aerial/trapeze pole. Sergiy appeared on Romania’s Got Talent in 2024 and competed in the 44th Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain in Paris this year, the world's largest circus competition. He is a highly accomplished dancer, ranging from contemporary to hip-hop. Born in Ukraine and now living in Germany, it’s his first time performing in Australia. He’s considered a master of the flying pole, exhibiting feats of strength and flexibility that are hard to believe.

Joining him on stage is fellow Ukrainian, also living in Germany, and new to Australia, Diana Bondarenko, Her gravity-defying aerial artistry has enchanted audiences across the show’s debut tour. Her performances, described as spellbinding, combine precision, strength, and elegance, leaving audiences breathless. It’s her pouting, red-clad visage you see on the posters for La Ronde

From Belarus comes the incredible Polina, who holds the Guinness World Records title for the most spins in 30 seconds while suspended by her hair. She has performed in Dubai, France, Germany, and Switzerland, and this is her first time in Australia. Another aerialist, Felipe Reyes, hangs by his mouth! A Colombian who lives in the UK and performed at the London Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, he has toured six continents: Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, plus Oceania.

José Carlos Campos, originally from Gran Canaria, one of Spain’s Canary Islands off northwestern Africa, is a trained ballet dancer, an experienced musical theatre performer and has worked as a master of ceremonies at some of the best cabarets in the world, including Crazy Horse Paris, Lío Ibiza, the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and Nomad Croatia. He brings all this talent, comedy and charm to La Ronde as the show’s ‘clown’.

Keeping us all dancing in our seats and bringing the upbeat melodies to life is Geniris, a dazzling vocal performance artist from the Dominican Republic, currently living in Spain. Her impressive career includes performances in Disney’s The Lion King musical, appearances on major TV shows such as The Voice, and starring roles in high-end dinner shows, including Billionaire Dubai. Geniris was scouted by Scott Maidment via her Instagram account and has only been in the country for a month.

“I have fallen in love with Australia,” said Geniris.

“The green trees, the nature, remind me of home and make me a little homesick sometimes. But the cast usually eat dinner together each night, and I video call my Mum, so I’m super happy. This experience is

completely new to me. I’m used to performing with other dancers rather than acrobats, and my usual style is Salsa, Latin, Jennifer Lopez – some of the songs I perform in the show I’d never heard before. It’s been amazing though, and my favourite song in the show is I’m Coming Out by Diana Ross. I also love my sexy red costumes!”

The only Australian in the cast is Adam Malone, who hails from Gosford on the Central Coast and now lives in Melbourne when he’s not on tour. Adam is a master of the Washington Trapeze, an extremely rare skill that few in the world can perform. It’s basically balancing on a trapeze bar on your head! Adam has previously performed in Blanc de Blanc and has been performing professionally since the age of 13.

“I grew up around gymnastics,” said Adam. “My sister was an elite gymnast, so I have been doing that since before I can remember. When I was young, a circus came to town and set up a training space, and I fell into it. I ended

"I’m super excited to perform in Newcastle – it feels like home. "

“With so many of my family members there, it’s always special, but this time even more so, as my grandmother can’t travel and hasn’t seen me perform in years. Having her in the audience makes this show especially meaningful.”

Reviews from Adelaide say that Adam’s performance has the audience in stitches, performing physical comedy at its finest, in high heels no less, and dialling up the raunchier side of the show (he may get his kit off!).

“It’s important to stay as fit as possible,” said Adam.

“We perform every day, which is a workout and practice all at the same time, but I’m also into gym training, staying fit and strong and building muscle is important, especially as I’m getting older now at 33!”

up travelling and performing with the Moscow Family Circus from the age of 13 - I didn’t run away to the circus as such, because my mother always supported me, but I guess it was a bit like that.

“I gave it up in my early 20s and became a make-up artist. I found myself part of the Queer scene, performing in drag at nightclubs, and realised it was a full-circle moment. I took myself off to study at NICA – the National Institute of Circus Arts in Melbourne, and studied under a legendary Chinese master, Mr Lu, who taught me the ‘Imperial Secrets’ of acrobatics, particularly the Washington Trapeze. It’s a rare performance skill and very unusual to see it in a cabaret setting, as it often involves much heavier equipment, but I’ve got my own gear. I’m also one of the few men who

This year, in addition to the fabulousness of La Ronde, the Spiegeltent will also provide the venue for two nights of comedy on 13 and 14 September, featuring Merrick Watts. An Idiot’s Guide to Wine: Volume Two promises new jokes, new wines, same idiot! A brand-new show from Australia’s favourite comedian slash wine expert.

The List called La Ronde “all killer, no filler,” – it’s an edge-of-your-seat extravaganza guaranteed to leave you breathless, and you won’t want to miss it. Tickets for La Ronde start at $70 for previews, with General Admission $80. Premium admission is available for $115. The running time is approximately 90 minutes, and the show is recommended for audiences 15 years and older. The Spiegeltent bar opens one hour before each performance, so get there early and enjoy a drink. With no allocated seating, it’s first-come, first-served, so arrive together to sit together.

TYSON NICHOLSON

McGrath Rural

The past few months have underscored just how resilient the prestige and lifestyle market on the Coast and in the Hunter remains. With the RBA recently cutting the cash rate by 0.25% to 3.6%, we’ve seen a noticeable lift in confidence. In my experience, these shifts don’t instantly change buyer behaviour overnight, but they do add momentum and depth to the pool of qualified purchasers — especially in the

premium space where confidence often counts as much as capacity.

In the rural and acreage lifestyle segment, the underlying drivers remain clear. Families from Sydney and Newcastle are still prioritising space, privacy, and lifestyle security without compromising on connectivity. Downsizers, too, are active, many using strong city sales results to pivot into manageable yet high-quality acreage retreats. From what I’m seeing on the ground, properties with genuine character and infrastructure continue to be tightly held, and when they do come to market, they’re well received.

At the prestige end — waterfronts, architectural homes, and unique estates — scarcity is the significant factor. Premium buyers are not flooding the market, but the ones who are present are highly motivated. The days of “fear of missing out” are behind us; today’s buyers are discerning, informed, and very clear on what they want. From my vantage point, that means presentation and positioning matter more than ever — the right story and campaign can mean the difference between a good result and a standout one.

One of the reasons I aligned with McGrath is the strength of our partnership with Knight Frank and Bayleys International. That network provides my clients with exposure to a truly global audience of high-net-worth buyers, while maintaining the personal, relationship-driven approach that defines this market. In my view, it’s the best of both worlds: national brand alignment with international reach, paired with the trust and guidance of a local expert.

Looking ahead, I expect stability and steady growth, with the potential for further upside if rates ease again. My advice to owners considering a move is this: the buyers are out there, but they are measured. The properties that succeed will be those that marry scarcity with strong presentation, backed by a strategy that speaks directly to this audience.

Family Fun Takes Centre Stage at New Annual Festival

Newcastle's New Annual festival is rolling out the red carpet for families this year, with two standout events that promise to captivate audiences of all ages while delivering unforgettable experiences right in the heart of the city.

The festival kicks off with the First Night Art Party on Laman Street – a free celebration that transforms Newcastle's cultural precinct into a vibrant outdoor playground. This high-energy street party features electrifying performances from acclaimed artists Haiku Hands, Kira Puru, and DEVAURA, alongside roving street performers and spectacular art projections that will illuminate the Newcastle Art Gallery's façade.

What makes this opening night truly special is its community focus. The building projections showcase animations co-created by local children working with Art Thinking, celebrating new commissions by First Nations artists. It's a beautiful fusion of culture, creativity, and community that lights up the street with shared storytelling. The four-hour celebration is designed to be accessible for all, with wheelchair-friendly venues and the Newcastle Library open for extended hours to celebrate the street party.

The festival's community spirit shines brightest at Global Gathering on Beaumont Street, Hamilton. This vibrant street party, hosted by acclaimed comedian and author Benjamin Law alongside chef Jennifer Wong, transforms one of Newcastle's liveliest precincts into a multicultural celebration. Families can enjoy live cooking demonstrations, music performances, drumming collectives, and dance across two stages, creating an immersive cultural experience that celebrates Newcastle's diversity. Meanwhile, SOAK: Live at the Baths offers something truly magical – five nights of sunset concerts at the iconic Newcastle Ocean Baths. This free music series features diverse acts including local favourites Dust, beat-boxing virtuoso Tom Thum, and rising star A.Girl, with genres spanning R&B, jazz, indie rock, and pop

violin. There's something special about soaking up live music while watching the sunset over the ocean from this beloved Newcastle landmark.

Families can also embark on a Public Art Trail adventure around the city's foreshore and historic East End. This self-guided journey features interactive installations housed in converted shipping containers, creating a "choose your own adventure" style exploration. From fantastical mini golf at The Station to sensory experiences along the waterfront, the trail encourages families to discover Newcastle's creative heart at their own pace.

Renowned Theatre Company The Last Great Hunt are bringing two much-loved shows to Newcastle for the first time. Night Night and Alvin Sputnik are two groundbreaking theatre shows that have won hearts all over the world and are sure to capture the hearts of Novocastrians.

All of these events exemplify New Annual's commitment to making quality arts accessible to Newcastle families, combining worldclass performances with genuine community engagement. Whether you're dancing in the street at Global Gathering, enjoying sunset music at the Ocean Baths, or discovering interactive art along the foreshore trail, these experiences promise to create lasting memories for families exploring the arts together.

Your Pride, Your Truth

Newcastle's Biggest Rainbow Celebration Returns

WORDS LIANE MORRIS IMAGES SOURCE NEWCASTLE PRIDE FESTIVAL

Joyously bursting into its sixth year, the 2025 Newcastle Pride Festival, from Friday, 3 October to Sunday, 26 October, promises a whole month of an electrifying celebration of love, diversity, and unity. From its glitterdrenched launch at Flamingos Live to a parade 'bigger, bolder, and balloonier,' and their signature free, family-friendly Fair Day, the 2025 festival is a radiant affirmation of this year’s theme of Your Pride, Your Truth

The festival plays a crucial role in raising awareness and promoting acceptance within the broader community, ensuring that the voices and stories of LGBTQIA+ individuals are heard and celebrated. It aims to create a safer, more inclusive future for all, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

The vision of the organisation behind the festival is to empower current and future generations to be their authentic selves, feel accepted, find their voice, and be proud of who they are. Founded in 2018 by Lee-Anne McDougall and Ivan Skaines, Newcastle Pride began as a small three-event festival in Foreshore Park that drew 5,000 people to its first Fair Day. The overwhelming response confirmed the need for a dedicated, inclusive

space where the LGBTQIA+ community could connect, celebrate, and be visible.

“Newcastle Pride Festival is about more than just celebration, it’s about visibility, solidarity, and making space for every voice in our community,” said President Lee-Anne McDougall.

Newcastle Pride has grown into a major annual festival, attracting over 13,000 people to Fair Day in 2024, and is powered by a passionate volunteer team committed to creating safe, respectful, and empowering spaces for all - especially LGBTQIA+ youth. The event is supported by local businesses and community organisations, including long-term Festival Principal Partner Coles.

“It’s an honour to be part of Newcastle Pride once again,” said a Coles spokesperson.

“We are proud to be recognised as a Platinum Employer at the 2025 AWEI Awards and to stand proudly with the LGBTQIA+ community.”

Krys Sutton, Marketing and PR Manager for Newcastle Pride, has seen a dip in sponsorship and funding this year.

“We are a non-profit organisation that relies fully on volunteers, sponsorships and grants,” said Krys.

“We suspect that the US Government's stance on DEI has had some effect, and local businesses are tightening their belts. Regardless, it’s exciting to see continued support from

Hunter Water and new partners like the University of Newcastle and Hyphen Health come on board as Fair Day Sponsors.”

Kicking off the festival with a glitterbombed bang, The Leather Lounge storms into Flamingos Live on Friday 3 October for its exclusive Australian premiere. Fresh from wowing Glastonbury, international cabaret sensation Leather Lungs leads a no-holdsbarred night of outrageous drag, powerhouse vocals, filthy comedy, and rule-breaking circus. This is Newcastle Pride’s official 2025 headliner - and it’s set to be utterly unmissable.

Across the first weekend, keep the kids enchanted with Drag Storytime and the Kids Rainbow Disco at Bernie’s Bar on Saturday, 4 October. Hosted by the fabulous Sticky Waffles, Drag Storytime brings books to life with vibrant costumes and captivating storytelling, before the little ones hit the dance floor with sequins, superhero capes, and sparkly sneakers, all encouraged!

This free, safe, and welcoming space celebrates LGBTQIA+ families, allies, and all rainbow-loving kids under 12. And for those without little ones, head to Carrington Bowlo for Drag Music Bingo hosted by Kandii Rhinestone, with DJ Queerio on Sunday, October 5, from 12.30pm to 3pm, where they promise an afternoon of camp chaos and hilarious shenanigans.

The second weekend kicks off with Short ‘N’ Curlies at Event Cinemas Kotara on Friday, 10 October from 6 pm. Featuring short Queer films curated by Queer Screen, the $25 entry includes popcorn and a drink. Next day, Newcastle Pride Parade - Balloon, Bicycle, Walk -encourages everyone to turn the Newcastle foreshore into a sparkling sea of colour, creativity, and community. Round off the second weekend with a chilled-out experience, creating art on Sunday afternoon with a Creative Erotic Pottery Workshop with Wonder Mama.

One of the most meaningful events of the festival, the Pride Youth Formal for youth aged 12 - 17 at Bernie's, is held on Saturday, 18 October, from 3pm. This afternoon of unapologetic queer joy, featuring beats by DJ Queerio, is a safe space for LGBTQIA+ youth to show up, be loud, proud, and absolutely fabulous. On Sunday, October 19, head down to Slingtown Espresso at Islington from 10.30am for Espresso Yourself – a free event designed to foster connection.

The most highly anticipated event of the festival is Fair Day, taking place on Saturday, 25 October, from 11am to 6pm at Gregson Park in Hamilton, with the markets curated by Pride Partner Homegrown Markets.

“This year, we’re introducing a second stage dedicated to DJs, keeping the music and energy flowing all day,” said Krys. “There’s also Drag It Out, an exciting new drag competition, Coles will be hosting a lively bar, and the Children’s Entertainment Area will be packed with fun and games.”

Headlining this year’s event is the electrifying Jimi the Kween, and guiding the day’s festivities are crowd favourites Ms Danni Issues, Sexy Galaxy, Greg Gould, and Freddie Merkin. Vocal powerhouse performances by Greg Gould, Maeve Grant, and Alanna Sofia will be unforgettable, while families will delight in dancing along with The Quokkas Drag fans are in for a feast of fabulous talent. Highlights include the high-energy

showcase,

local stars Gucci and Rhea Listik, alongside special guest appearances from RuPaul royalty Molly Poppinz. Audiences can also look forward to performances by local icons Deirdre Doo, Trixxie Killder, and Kandii Rhinestone, with the always-entertaining Lou Thunderdust and Justinamood bringing the laughs as hosts of the Gay Gaymes.

The dazzling creations from Creative Creatures and breathtaking displays from Three Rings Aerial & Circus will deliver more spectacle throughout the day, and to keep everything buzzing, a stellar DJ lineup is locked in, with sets from DJ Eddie, DJ Gimmi Moore, DJ Lisa Anita, Vandoll, DJ Tiff, and DJ Queerio.

And of course, two much-loved traditions return: the ever-popular Lip Sync Competition, where local talent battles it out in a fun and fiery contest, and the Doggywood Parade, celebrating the city’s most glamorous, camp, and clever four-legged friends.

The festival finale goes out with a glittering bang at POOF DOOF + DYKE DOOF, the ultimate Denim & Diamonds afterparty on Saturday, 25 October at the Hamilton Station Hotel. Featuring high-octane performances from Vybe and Karna Ford (RuPaul’s Drag Race Downunder), Jimi the Kween, Danni Issues, George Dykeal, James Alexandr, Mama de Leche, Mama Medusa, and Nipslip. Legendary POOF DOOF beats will keep the dance floor moving from 7pm until 2am, closing out the 2025 Newcastle Pride Festival in spectacular queer style.

In addition to the events produced by Newcastle Pride, there are also a series of Associate Events, including the University of Newcastle, with a week of inclusive and creative events from 13–17 October, aiming to provide a safe, welcoming space for students and staff to celebrate LGBTQIA+ culture and connect with the community.

Additional Associate Events include Bernies Pride Night - Pride Monochrome on Saturday 11 October, I Can Tell by Chris McAllister (The Trans Comedian) at Bernies on 17 October, Pulse Climbing on October 17, Exploring IdentityMixed Media & Collage Work with Emma Clifton for young people aged 16 to 21 on 23 October at The Base, Hockey Pride Rounds at the Newcastle International Hockey Centre in Broadmeadow on 24 October and Out & Running from Glenrock on Sunday 26 October.

World Premiere Comedy Exposes Media's Moral Maze

#This is Not Journalism (#TINJ) is hailed as an urgent comedy about truth, news and alternative facts. A powder keg 75-minute comedy drama written and directed by Ross Mueller for some of Newcastle’s finest

actors, including Philip McGrath and Mark Pegler, #TINJ is presented by UpStage at The Playhouse (Newcastle Civic Theatre) from Friday 26 September until Saturday 4 October.

Conservative journalist Brian Matthews is a star on Real Time News Network. A loud, proud advocate for free speech and political incorrectness. He is a news-breaker, opinionmaker, and friend of CEOs and Prime Ministers, and then… Matthews is outed on social media as a sexual predator, and the RTN team is thrown into a dark night of ethical chaos.

Everyone knows social media is a sewer, full of trolls, bots, liars, right?... However, as new allegations emerge in real time, the truth begins to collide with alternative facts, and some unedifying Christmas party photocopies. The deadline clock is ticking. Will RTN choose to protect their star, or try to win the ratings?

Pets, Podcasts, & Pure Joy: Meet the Young Voices of the Placed to Speak Episode 1

In a world where podcasts often cover politics, pop culture, or crime mysteries, a group of young storytellers from the Place Based Abilities Program supporting young people with disability, are proving that sometimes the most joyful stories come from the backyard. Their podcast, Placed to Speak, recently featured a lively episode on one of their favourite topics: Pets. From cheeky chickens to playful pups, the conversation captured the boundless love kids have for their animal companions.

Guiding the chat were hosts Taylor and Ella, whose warmth and humour kept the conversation flowing with giggles and curiosity. Their questions made space for stories that were equal parts funny, heartfelt, and downright adorable.

Anthony, at just 12 years old, is already a proud farmer in the making. He keeps nine chickens, each with its own quirky name and personality, living in what he fondly calls “Chicken Paradise.” Potato, Daisy, Lucky, and even “Not Happy Feet” (yes, that’s the real name!) keep him entertained daily with their antics. For Anthony, chickens are like family. “They definitely make me very happy, especially when I get to hug them,” he explained.

Sierra, also a chicken enthusiast, has her own flock but admits she mostly helps by collecting eggs while her dad does the heavy lifting. Still, she treasures the bond with her pets and laughs about their cheeky habits. Beyond her chickens, Sierra’s heart belongs to her dogs, Millie and Sunny. Millie, a Cavoodle, is full of energy and affection, while Sunny prefers a more laid-back life. “She licks my face when I’m sad,” Sierra shared warmly.

Then there’s Chloe, 10, who brings plenty of laughs with stories about her dog, Coco, a Kelpie-Collie cross with boundless energy. Coco has been part of some hilarious family moments, including a pretend dog wedding, complete with a veil and presents. “She always makes me laugh,” Chloe said. “And she always licks my face.”

Together, with Taylor and Ella at the helm, these young podcasters remind us that pets are companions, comforters, and a constant source of joy. Through Placed to Speak, they’re sharing their perspectives and showcasing the magic of conversation, friendship, and the simple happiness that animals bring into our lives.

She later followed her interest in beauty, launching her own business in beauty therapy. Along the way, she discovered not only a passion for fashion but also a natural talent for helping and inspiring others. During this time, Kerry discovered her true purpose: not just to make women look

“I believe every woman deserves to feel her best every single day,” Kerry says.

“That might mean discovering the colours that flatter them most, refreshing their wardrobe,

or taking them shopping to find their perfect outfit. My goal is to teach women how to dress in ways that flatter their body shape, reflect their personality, and ultimately make them feel great!”

Through workshops and group styling events, Kerry extends her influence further, offering fun and interactive experiences perfect for workplaces, groups of friends, and community groups.

Weekenda was founded by Georgia's father, Pete Smith, and grew from a single holiday home in Kangaroo Valley to a thriving business managing over 260 properties across the Hunter Valley, Central Coast, Lake Macquarie, and Newcastle.

"Weekenda began almost by accident," said Georgia. "Our neighbours noticed that it was booked much more often than theirs, so they asked him to start managing their properties. It developed into a genuine, in-demand business that sold to Alloggio in late 2023."

Georgia began her journey working in reservations and property management while studying at university, eventually moving into trust accounting and revenue management. She visited the U.S. annually to attend shortterm rental conferences, bringing home insights that would help professionalise the Australian

market. Her contributions helped Weekenda adopt cutting-edge systems, such as keyless entry, guest compendiums, dynamic pricing tools, and integrated property management software.

"I fell in love with the work," Georgia reflects. "I wanted to create something here that felt authentic, personal, and future-focused."

"It's a people business. It's about building relationships - with owners, with guests, and with the local tourism ecosystem. Holiday homes are so much more personal than hotels or long-term rentals. You're managing someone's home and someone else's holiday simultaneously. That means doing it with care, heart, and detail."

When her father sold Weekenda to Alloggio, Georgia continued working with the company. But by 2025, she was ready to step out on her own - and bring her own vision to life.

"I moved to the Hunter Valley ten years ago," Georgia says. "I've got three young kids now and I just love the lifestyle - the space, the community, the landscape. Although I grew up in Sydney, my grandparents lived on a property on the north coast, and I loved spending time there. I have always known that I am a country girl at heart. This is home now. I wanted to create something here that felt authentic,

personal, and future-focused. Something that delivers real results for owners and unforgettable experiences for guests in the heart of this wonderful community."

That focus has already resonated. Hunter Holidays has quickly earned the trust of local property owners who value Georgia's transparency, innovation, and track record. The business services the greater Hunter region, including Lake Macquarie, but remains firmly anchored in the Hunter Valley.

"Since launching, I have been overwhelmed by the level of support we've received from the local Hunter Valley community. This is a place where amazing things are happening, and where I feel I can genuinely make a difference. I'm very excited about the future."

One of the most compelling aspects of Hunter Holidays is that it's not an Online Travel Agent (OTA), unlike Airbnb, Stayz, or Booking. com. Georgia and her team don't just manage listings—they take care of the entire operation. From cleaning and maintenance to pest control and guest communication, Hunter Holidays offers a comprehensive, full-service experience.

What really sets them apart is the use of advanced data systems and AI-powered tools. Unlike traditional agencies that set static rates annually, Georgia's team utilises dynamic pricing - adjusting nightly rates in real-time based

on market demand, occupancy trends, and booking windows.

"We're tracking data constantly," she explains. "We see when demand is peaking and adjust rates accordingly. Our pricing fluctuates by approximately 30% throughout the year. It's a really flexible, responsive system - and it means better returns for our owners and very often great value for money for our guests with tailored packages and length of stay strategies utilised."

Georgia's approach to compliance, insurance, and risk mitigation protects the owner's investment—something particularly important in an industry facing increased regulation and scrutiny.

"We're not an OTA," she says. "Those are just online booking channels. We're managers - we're responsible for the property, the guest experience, and the owner's peace of mind."

This hands-on management style means Georgia and her team know every property inside out - from its quirks to its best features.

"I don't believe in cookie-cutter hospitality," she explains. "Each property has a story and a personality, and our job is to amplify that through great photography, compelling listings, and exceptional guest care."

While Hunter Holidays treats every property as if it were its own, the guest experience is equally important. Every booking comes with personal support, concierge-style services

and state-of-the-art online compendiums that elevate a stay from simple to spectacular.

"Understanding the why behind a guest's visit is important," Georgia says. "Are they here for a family gathering? A wedding? A romantic escape? We build bespoke hospitality experiences around that. Guests can book add-on packages, including grocery delivery, private wine tastings, picnics, helicopter rides, and in-home catering services. Our team will organise it all -- it's a curated, boutique offering for modern travellers."

Trends in the short-term rental market show that travellers are seeking more than just accommodation—they want value, authenticity, and flexibility. The Hunter Valley's short-term rental market offers investors attractive returns, and the region's world-class wine and food culture has contributed to a surge in demand for quality holiday accommodation.

"There's a real premium now on meaningful travel," Georgia says. "People are more conscious of where they go, how they spend their time, and who they're with. That's why the little things matter more than ever - the welcome note, the personalised recommendations, the ease of check-in. It all adds up."

Despite rapid growth and overwhelming support since launch, Georgia is clear about the future: measured, intentional growth that doesn't compromise on quality.

"We're already seeing more use of AI in bookings and guest communications. We're seeing changes in guest expectations, booking behaviours, and even who is travelling. You've got to be agile and future-proof from day one."

She also notes a shift in how people value their time and experiences following the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I don't want this to become a giant," she

says. "I want it to stay high-touch, boutique, and personal. Every property we manage, we treat as if it were our own. Every guest we host, we support like family."

As Hunter Holidays continues to grow its portfolio and reputation, it's becoming clear that Georgia Smith has created something truly special—a business born of deep expertise, local passion, and modern innovation. For property owners looking to maximise their investment and guests looking for a richer, more personal Hunter Valley experience, the message is simple:

TUESDAY CLUB:

Tuesday Club A

Place to Connect, Share, and Belong

Every Tuesday morning at The Place Charlestown, something special happens. For 2.5 hours, people aged 65 to 93 gather for what has become one of the region’s most loved social programs – Charlestown Square Tuesday Club Inclusive Connections. This is a community where friendships flourish, stories are shared, and laughter is guaranteed.

The program is as diverse as the people who attend. One week you might be enjoying a classic film from Hollywood’s golden age, the next you could be trying your hand at Aboriginal dot painting, listening to the beats of Senegalese drummers, or swapping seeds and plants to support sustainable living. Gentle wellness sessions, such as Chair Qigong, music, and comedy, lighten the spirit, while guest speakers and themed events spark curiosity and conversation.

Intergenerational activities have become a real highlight, with visits from local school students and daycare children bringing joy and fresh energy into the room. And the Club doesn’t just look inward – members proudly give back, whether through the Biggest Morning Tea, charity drives, or care packs for seafarers arriving in Newcastle.

Yet when you ask participants what keeps them coming, the answer is simple: connection. Many live alone or have found themselves without the networks they once had. Here, they discover companionship, a sense of belonging, and the opportunity to be part of something bigger.

As one member put it: “It’s the best social program my husband and I have ever attended.”

So, whether you want to try something new, share your own experiences, or simply enjoy a cuppa with friendly faces, Tuesday Club is waiting for you. If you live in Lake Macquarie or Newcastle, we’d love to welcome you into the circle.

NEWCASTLE FRINGE OPENS DOORS TO ARTISTS FOR 2026 FESTIVAL

Newcastle's most vibrant arts celebration is gearing up for another spectacular year, with artist registrations for the 2026 Newcastle Fringe Festival opening on Monday, 18 August. Running from 14-29 March 2026, Australia's Biggest Little Fringe is expanding to three full weekends of creative chaos.

Following a record-breaking 2025 that saw 94 artist groups (comprising 612 individual artists) perform 203 shows to over 14,000 attendees and generate more than $188,000 in revenue, the festival is raising the bar even higher.

"Fringe is about creative freedom, bold risks, and giving audiences the chance to see something they'll never forget," says Chairperson Brooke Twyford. The 2026 theme promises to be "unleashed, uncut, unforgettable."

What sets Newcastle Fringe apart is its openaccess philosophy – no curators, no gatekeepers. Whether you're a seasoned stand-up comedian, cabaret performer, physical theatre innovator, spoken word artist, or someone with a gloriously weird idea brewing in your lounge room, there's a place for you.

The festival's three distinct hubs return for 2026: Hamilton CBD (featuring The Exchange,

The Kent, and Hamilton Uniting Church), Newcastle Precinct (The Grand Hotel, The Royal Exchange, and Bernies), and Beach & 'Burbs (Souths at Merewether, The Dungeon at Adamstown, and Flamingos at Lambton).

Highlights include the massive free FEAST opening event in Hamilton – a family favourite –as well as the return of popular events like Choir Day. The festival's reputation for artist support continues to grow, with many performers extending their Adelaide Fringe tours to include Newcastle.

Registration closes on 30 September (or earlier if full), with places capped at 100 artist groups and 200 shows. Artists will be notified by 18 November, and the full program will go on sale on 1 February 2026.

As part of a 300+ strong global network of creative freedom, Newcastle Fringe connects local artists to the world while celebrating the raw, real, and unapologetically diverse talent that makes Newcastle special.

Being a Cruise Welcome Volunteer can be a great choice for people who enjoy meeting new people and want to ensure that cruise ship visitors have a memorable experience in our beautiful city.

The Newcastle Tourism Industry Group oversees the Cruise Welcome Volunteer program to ensure that visitors to Newcastle have a memorable experience and become advocates for and repeat visitors to the city. The cruise industry has grown significantly since Newcastle first welcomed ships in 2001, contributing $20 million in economic impact during 2023-24 alone.

Newcastle will receive seven exciting cruise ship visits during the 2025-26 season, which will run from November 2025 through March 2026. The season kicks off with Viking Venus on 29 November, followed by Viking Orion on 1 December. Celebrity Edge brings nearly 3,000 passengers on 13 December, while the exclusive residential ship The World makes a special visit on 19 December.

The World represents a unique addition to Newcastle's cruise calendar. MS The World is a private residential cruise ship operated like a condominium complex, with large apartments that can be purchased. It is the largest private

residential yacht in the world, featuring 165 residences. Unlike traditional cruise ships, The World's 150 wealthy residents from around 40 countries actually live aboard full-time or visit periodically, making this a truly special opportunity for volunteers to welcome this exclusive floating community to Newcastle.

The season continues with Viking Venus returning in February 2026, followed by Crown Princess in March with over 3,000 passengers, and concludes with Viking Orion on 31 March.

Cruise ships arrive and dock at Channel Berth at Carrington, and a shuttle bus service is provided for passengers travelling to Museum Park in Newcastle CBD.

Cruise Welcome Volunteers share their knowledge about the great things Newcastle has to offer visiting domestic and international cruise ship passengers. Whether providing commentary on the short shuttle service to the CBD or being the friendly local who meets and greets on arrival at Museum Park, volunteers assist with directions and information on transport, shopping, dining, and places to explore while in Newcastle.

A great Cruise Welcome Volunteer will enjoy meeting new people and have good customer service skills combined with local knowledge. With nearly 10,000 passengers expected

across the season, volunteers play a crucial role in showcasing Newcastle's hospitality and ensuring visitors become advocates for our region.

For additional information about volunteering, email info@ntig.org.au or visit the Newcastle Tourism Industry Group website to register your interest in joining this rewarding program that helps put Newcastle on the global cruise map.

A FIRST LOOK | NEWCASTLE ART GALLERY OPENS ITS DOORS TO THE FUTURE

After years of anticipation and a transformative $40 million expansion, Newcastle Art Gallery is set to offer the community its first glimpse inside the reimagined cultural landmark this month. The gallery will partially reopen during the New Annual festival, providing timed entry and free guided tours each Friday to Sunday from 26 September.

The expansion represents more than just additional space – it's a complete reimagining of Newcastle's premier cultural institution. An additional 1,600 square metres of exhibition space has been added to Newcastle Art Gallery, effectively increasing exhibition space by 250%. When fully operational, the gallery will showcase significantly more of its nationally significant $145 million collection to locals and visitors alike.

The partial reopening centres on First Nations voices and creativity, with Director Lauretta Morton OAM emphasising the gallery's commitment to a "First Nations First ethos, embedding the culture and creativity of Indigenous communities into the architectural and artistic fabric of the expanded Art Gallery."

Visitors will experience powerful new commissions that embed Indigenous culture into the gallery's very foundation. Wiradjuri and Wongaibon artist Renae Lamb's striking work Dabuyarra murun: A story of life, legacy, and connection has been fabricated in steel and permanently installed in the concrete floor of the central atrium, creating a meaningful meeting point between the original 1977 building and the new expansion.

"The rivers and songlines are the threads that bind us together, reminding us that no matter where we go, we are always connected - to each other, to the land and to the wisdom of the women who guide us," says Lamb.

Meanwhile, Adam Manning's "A Sonic Acknowledgment of Country" unfolds as a journey through five distinct soundscapes, drawn from Newcastle, Awabakal Country, and surrounding areas.

Born on Awabakal/Worimi Country with Kamilaroi kinship, Manning describes it as his "most expansive creative work to date", where "each natural sound shapes the musical narrative that follows." He hopes visitors will "feel a sense of calm and connection to the land", whether experiencing "the pulse of the clapsticks or the quiet breath of the forest."

Adding to this cultural celebration are suspended sculptures by Awabakal artist Shellie Smith and acclaimed Quandamooka artist Megan Cope, ensuring "the work of First Nations artists is grounded in the heart of Newcastle Art Gallery now and for generations to come."

While September's first look will showcase the central atrium and three new gallery spaces, along with a new Gallery shop and Learning Studio featuring an inaugural window commission by Newcastle artist Maggie Hensel-Brown, a grand reopening of the entire Gallery will be held in February 2026. This will coincide with a major exhibition of works from the collection and the unveiling of a commission by internationally renowned artist Fayen d'Evie.

This phased approach enables the gallery team to properly prepare the remaining spaces for the return of the collection, ensuring that the strict environmental conditions required for preserving significant artworks are maintained.

The project is supported by $5 million from the Australian Government under the Regional Recovery Partnerships and $5 million from the New South Wales Government under the Regional Recovery Package, as well as $12 million from the Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation made possible through the Valerie and John Ryan bequest, Margaret Olley Trust, and community fundraising over many years. The Foundation continues to seek a further $1 million through its public fundraising campaign.

The expansion will transform the Newcastle Art Gallery into a seven-day operation, featuring modern facilities including a permanent café, retail space, and state-of-the-art education facilities.

For Newcastle's arts community and culture enthusiasts, September's first look represents the beginning of a new chapter – one that honours the gallery's 47-year history while embracing an ambitious future as a nationally significant cultural destination.

Sparking Joy

On Tour

Occasionally, on weekends, we attend open houses that we've seen online. We're on the lookout for an investment property, but sometimes it’s purely out of curiosity. The pictures in the listings can make a place look so inviting that you think, at the very least, it might provide some design inspiration—a new way to approach an ensuite or a walk-in robe that you’d never considered before. Perhaps there’s some element in the backyard that could fit perfectly in your own home if done slightly differently.

However, often when we arrive, the photos can be misleading, making the space appear deceptively larger than it is, or for one reason or another, it might not suit our needs.

My mother always taught me, “You buy the worst house on the best street.” We lived in houses growing up that were in great areas, but needed renovations. I appreciate that she taught me how to see potential. At open houses, I've overheard many couples discussing things like “I don’t like the carpet” or “These tiles aren’t my style,” focusing on aspects that are relatively

easy to change. Meanwhile, I tend to look at the bones of the house: What wall could I knock down? What colour should I paint that? Where could I eventually put in a fireplace? There’s a reason that shows like The Block have been so successful; they give a sneak peek inside someone else’s home and spark ideas about what you could do with yours.

Now and then, you walk into a house with all this in mind, and you realise it’s perfect. It’s in a neighbourhood I don’t know much about, but it’s only 15 minutes from the kids' school. The exterior is stunning, with a dark finish and a Cape Cod extension added to the second floor. Once we stepped inside, I found it faultless: a beautiful staircase at the entry, a huge openplan living area, and a view that extends all the way to the backyard, covered deck, double garage, and pool. The maintenance-free backyard was simple yet stunning. Then we entered the master bedroom and discovered not one, but two walk-in robes, an ensuite, and a spacious bedroom.

We spoke to the neighbours who were in their front yard, and they had nothing but kind words to share about the street and the area.

When I returned home, the dog had torn one of his chew toys to shreds by the front door. There was laundry to hang out and beds to be made. I noticed one unwashed dish in the sink and, in my mind, I thought, “This place is a mess; how nice would that other house be?”

Then a phrase my grandmother once said popped into my head: “Wherever you go, there you are.” It dawned on me that, yes, that other house was lovely and well laid out, but it looked its best because people were coming through. If we lived there, it would still contain all of our belongings. There would still be laundry to do, kitchens to clean, and dog mess to pick up. The grass is always greener on the other side, but sometimes you need to find joy where you are before looking elsewhere. The Block is on tonight, and that will do for now.
