DIVERSE EXHIBITION OF JAPANESE CULTURE at Newcastle Museum

Through the display of a variety of photographs, including life-sized images of full body tattoos, as well as interactive elements and sculptured objects, Perseverance covers a broad spectrum of the current world of Japanese tattooing.

Perseverance was developed by the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles and completed a multi-city US tour in 2015-16. It is being toured internationally by Flying Fish Exhibits and Newcastle Museum is the first collecting institution in Australia to host this exhibition.

"We are very excited to bring the Perseverance exhibition to the Museum's audience in Newcastle and the Hunter," said Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes. "Our Museum continues to raise its profile nationally by presenting world-class exhibitions to our community.

"Perseverance demonstrates the Museum's commitment to providing diverse exhibitions that appeal to a wide range of audiences and age groups. The exhibition also provides a platform for Newcastle to display some of its fine collection of Japanese ceramics from Newcastle Art Gallery."

Newcastle Museum Manager Julie Baird sees this exhibition as a perfect fit for Newcastle and its thriving community of tattoo enthusiasts and artists, and an enticement for younger adults to visit the Museum.

"There are nearly 1,000 registered tattoo studios in Australia, and about 40 are in Newcastle alone," said Baird.

"Tattoo art is quite popular in Newcastle, and we have a number of talented tattoo artists in our community. This exhibition will attract visitors who are interested in tattoos as well as enthusiasts of Japanese art and culture--it's simply a beautiful exhibition."

"Perseverance brings a funkier, younger vibe as well as a more masculine focus than some of our exhibitions. We will continue our after-hours programming with this exhibition, with a special night of Japanese culture and live tattooing

that will provide an opportunity for people to meet and connect with one another in and around the Museum space."

Although tattooing is largely seen as an underground activity in Japan, Japanese tattoo artists have pursued their passions, applied their skills, and have risen to become internationally acclaimed artists. Through the endurance and dedication of these tattoo artists, Japanese tattooing has also persevered and is now internationally renowned for its artistry, lineage, historical symbolism and skill.

Curated by Takahiro Kitamura and photographed and designed by Kip Fulbeck, Perseverance explores Japanese tattooing as an art form by acknowledging its roots in ukiyo-e prints and also examines current practices and offshoots of Japanese tattooing in the U.S and Japan.

Perseverance features the work of seven internationally acclaimed tattoo artists, Ryudaibori (formerly Horitaka), Horitomo, Chris Horishiki Brand, Miyazo, Shige, Junii and Yokohama Horiken, along with tattoo works by selected others.

The Perseverance exhibition at Newcastle Museum is supported by The Japan Foundation, Sydney and is on now until April 30th.

On March 10th, NM PM is back – with the Museum opening until 9.30pm for Ink in the Link. There will be live demonstrations of tattooing, displays by local tattoo artists and studios, as well as demonstrations and performances exploring Japanese culture. Relax in the Museum Café with Japanese food and drink or marvel at the Show and Shine featuring Japanese cars and bikes. So ink up and immerse yourself in a night of after-hours fun at Newcastle Museum from 5pm until 9.30pm.

The Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience is a travelling exhibition that tells the story of Australia’s involvement in the First World War, and the ensuing Century of Service of Australia's armed forces in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations in which Australia has been involved.

The Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience follows a chronological timeline spanning from

pre-war Australia to the present day, using a mix of arresting visuals, artefacts, audio and film to engage visitors.

The Experience brings to life an infant Australia still finding its feet on the eve of war. It follows in the footsteps of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and nurses throughout the campaign, including a commemoration of Australia’s century of service A key feature of the experience will be the curated ‘local stories’ zone that will be part of the exhibition. These zones will be created in close collaboration with local communities and will contribute to the legacy for each region.

basically says, ‘Over to you…’ and passes the baton, so a lot of readers asked, ‘But how? What can I do?’

There were many near identical questions from hundreds of women and girls about how to speak out, how to cope with online bullying and ‘trolls,' sexism and harassment, how to do public speaking, research and more. After several months of the same types of questions, I decided to do a dedicated book to answer those precise questions, from critical thinking and writing to surviving social media.

What has the response to it been like since it was published last year?

It seems to be building a real following as word-of-mouth spreads, and the reviews and support for Speaking Out have been outstanding. This is a book that I wish I’d had when I was younger – or even five years ago.

You’ve been in the public sphere for more than half your life as an author, journalist, media commentator, human rights advocate and model. How has your ability and confidence in speaking out and sharing your views changed over this time?

I have grown a lot over the years, as well I should. One major thing that has changed is that my worldview has become more wellrounded, and a greater knowledge of social and cultural history has helped put events in Image courtesy of Jaqui E my life in perspective.

One thing I am passionate about doing is showing other women that many of their negative experiences may be common to a lot of other women and girls. It’s strength in numbers. It’s knowing that when someone yells at you out the car window, it isn’t about YOU. When a boss or a troll or a stranger puts you down using certain sexist language, it isn’t about YOU. There is a wider context.

The power of story - both fictional and factual will take centre stage when the 2017 Newcastle Writer’s Festival leaps off the page and into a range of venues across the city next month.

Now in its sixth year, the event will showcase the talents of 140 writers and thinkers from throughout the Hunter and across Australia in a three-day celebration of words, ideas and the joy of reading.

While book launches, workshops and discussions of the written word will be at the forefront of the festival, the diverse program will celebrate storytelling in all its forms including music, photography, illustration and performance.

Renowned cartoonist and cultural commentator Michael Leunig will open the program on April 7 with his characteristically “curly” take on the state of the world and his creative life.

This will be followed by a mix of 90 free and ticketed sessions on April 8-9 featuring everyone from much-loved Aussie actor Richard Roxburgh and South Sudanese child soldier-turned-Blacktown lawyer Deng Adut to respected authors such as Nick Earles, Peter Goldsworthy, Nikki Gemmell and Jackie French – just to name a few.

Among the high-profile names on the Newcastle Writer’s Festival program is one woman who is no stranger to the power of story - Tara Moss.

Intouch: Hi Tara and thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for Intouch Magazine.

My pleasure.

We’re looking forward to seeing you in Newcastle for the Newcastle Writer’s Festival in April. Can you tell me about the motivation behind your latest book, Speaking Out: A 21stCentury Handbook for Women and Girls?

After The Fictional Woman came out in 2014 I was moved by the response and outpouring of support, but also by the many questions that followed. The final chapter in the book

Women’s voices should be heard equally, as a democratic representation of the world we live in.

When any one gender or one social or racial group have the vast majority of the voice and power, we all lose out.

Worldwide fewer than one out of every four people we hear from or about in the media is female. Fewer than one. About 80% of our ministers are male. The US has never had a female President. We’ve had only one female Prime Minster, ever.

Recently there were just 5% women in Australian cabinet. There are still more than three men for every one woman now that things in cabinet are ‘more balanced.'

When you walk into any court or parliament and look at the portraits hanging on the wall, all, or almost all of them are of white men, you can see where we’ve come from. Some of those people may have been great, but we have a long way to go before we can really say ‘it’s all equal now,' when it was policy for so long to keep anyone else from those corridors of power.

You’d been a writer of novels for many years before you crossed over into the non-fiction realm. What prompted you to write The Fictional Woman?

I felt it was time for me to write directly to the page, rather than writing my research into the margins and beneath a layer of fiction. There are benefits to both styles of writing, but it felt time for me to branch out into non-fiction.

The Fictional Woman looked at the common fictions held by society about women, many of which you’ve had to overcome

in your own life. What do you think is the most damaging misconception held about women and what can we do to change it?

There is still a bias against women’s skills as leaders, writers, directors, musicians, teachers, you name it, which comes up constantly as ‘unconscious bias’ as revealed by numerous academic studies. To live in the meritocracy we all want to believe we are, we must become aware of our damaging unconscious biases and drop them. Tropfest has recently come into the news for their first year of blind judging, as there were only 5% women finalists and now with blind judging, it is 50/50 gender equal in the first year.

Similarly, this famously happened with blind orchestra auditions. I also outline numerous examples in other fields and studies in The Fictional Woman and Speaking Out. Those biases are deep rooted and will take time to overcome, as we often aren’t aware of them.

Your writing (both fiction and non-fiction) seems to have a common theme to it of empowerment. Would you agree and if so why is this so important to you?

Empowerment is defined as to ‘make (someone) stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights.’ This is hugely important for large sections of the population. And after all, what is the alternative? To do nothing?

Clearly you also take this theme across into the other aspects of your life, from your advocacy work with UNICEF, the Full Stop Foundation and Our Watch to your passion for eradicating cyberbullying from our digital world. What prompted you to get involved in these types of areas?

I couldn’t possibly sit back and do nothing. This is real life. I don’t want to be ignorant to what is going on around me. I can’t do it all, and I am not an expert in everything, but I’ll do what I can where I can. It’s collective, and it’s my responsibility as a (Continued on next page) ►

I believe you’re busy trying to finish up work on the six-part TV series Cyberhate, for which you are the Co-Executive Producer, Co- Writer and Presenter. Can you tell me how that project came about and what it involves?

When I was approached about what kind of documentary I wanted to do, my first thought was that I want to tackle the issue of online abuse, and how that is impacting our lives, our mental health and potentially the workings of democracy, as women and marginalised groups are increasingly bullied out of online spaces with targeted mob harassment.

I believe it is a serious issue, and after spending a lot of the past few years researching and advocating on the topic, I believe it is currently continuing to get worse. But it doesn’t have to – we can turn this around.

It has been a huge project for me over the past year.

Technology is wonderful in terms of creating connections between people – but it also seems to have spawned this “keyboard warrior” phenomenon, with people carelessly typing negative, hateful things that they would probably never dream of actually saying to a person. Why do you think the internet removes some people’s inbuilt filters of what is right and wrong?

The internet’s ‘disinhibition effect’ has been well researched. If you don’t have to ‘own’ what you say, or don’t have to look another person in the eye when you say it and bear the consequences, this often alters what people do.

Some say they don’t really mean what they write online, and they don’t know why they do it, while others are quite aware of the harm they are causing. It can become a kind of mob mentality issue at times - you see others doing it, and you think it’s okay even though some part of you may know it is wrong.

It’s important to be able to stand by and take responsibility for your actions, in the physical world and online.

Aside from Cyberhate and your appearance at the Newcastle Writer’s Festival, what else is on the horizon for you this year?

Nancy Wake. The New Zealand-born Australian is one of the bravest women I’ve read about, and one of the most decorated women of WW2. She literally killed a Nazi with her bare hands, threw grenades in Gestapo headquarters and more, and famously said of selling her war medals later in life, “Well, I can’t take them with me. And where I’m going they might melt.” Who wouldn’t want to sit down with her?

Gloria Steinem. I had the opportunity to interview Gloria in Melbourne last year, and her wisdom, spirit, energy and enthusiasm for the promotion of human rights and women’s rights impressed me. After reading her books, meeting her was no disappointment. I’d love to share a stage with her again.

Peter Cushing. Cushing is one of my favourite actors, from playing Sherlock Holmes and Van Helsing, to the cruel Tarkin from Star Wars. I’d love to have met him, and I’d be interested in asking the late Cushing what he thinks of his digital resurrection in Rogue One.

The Gum Ball returns this Autumn and, judging by the response on social media, people from all walks of life are genuinely excited. From April 21st to 23rd, Dashville will come alive with its biggest line-up of artists ever, maintaining its reputation as a refreshing and unique musical voyage. Aussie music legends Regurgitator will headline the three-day event, alongside an incredible list of 30 live performances. The line-up includes Kim Churchill, Tripod, Mick Thomas (Weddings, Parties, Anything), Felix Riebl (The Cat Empire), The Funk Hunters (Canada), The Peep Tempel, Gareth Liddiard (The Drones), Caiti Baker, The Go Set, Flyying Colours, Shining Bird and HITS. The Hunter Valley is again well represented amongst its roster of musical talent, with Boo Seeka, The Bad Time Boys, Dave Wells, Rose & The Sea and famed local super group Dashville Progress Society all heading to the Dashville venue “Last year we were over the moon when the festival sold out so early,” Dashville promoter Matt Johnston said. “A lot of people know how hard we’ve worked to achieve our goals.

This allows people to party on without keeping festival patrons awake with loud noise.

Punters can also enjoy morning yoga and bush walks.

Like all Dashville events, The Gum Ball features an array of exquisite cuisine from all around the world, supplied by the region’s best food vendors. Gum Ball attendees can enjoy mouth-watering pizza, bao, slow-cooked meats, Korean BBQ, delicious burgers, Dutch pancakes, healthy snacks and juices, plus a range of gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options.

Straight after The Gum Ball, the Dashville crew will dive straight into its third installment of the Dashville Skyline Festival, a three-day Country Cosmic Weekender. The event focuses on alt-country, folk, bluegrass, Americana and psychedelia, and has proven a popular festival on the national calendar. It’s all happening at NJC! Newcastle Jockey Club will commemorate a historic occasion when their $11.2 million track redevelopment hosts the first Group 3 race on the course proper on Friday 17 March as part of Newcastle Newmarket Race Day. The Mercedes-Benz Newcastle Autumn Racing Carnival hosts the Newcastle Newmarket Race Day featuring the Group 3 $150,000 Coca-Cola Newcastle Newmarket Handicap over 1400 metres that was won last year by Artistry.

Newcastle Jockey Club continues to innovate as anticipation grows with the impending opening of the jewel in the crown of Racing NSW’s and NJC’s track redevelopment at Broadmeadow.

CEO Matt Benson said that the redeveloped allweather course proper is unique and like no other in Australia. It’s also exceptionally well-suited to 2-yearolds (2YO) over 900m.

“We want to target owners of 2YO’s having their first start at Newcastle out of our 900m chute so that both the owners and their horse have a great experience,” said Mr. Benson.

“Our wide, even track offers a long run into the first turn, a velodrome-like camber entering the

Inductees will be honoured with a plaque to be placed in the soon to be designed “Hall of Fame Garden” at Broadmeadow Racecourse along with a commemorative framed print.

The race is now on to see who will be honoured at the Newcastle and Hunter Racing Hall of Fame Gala Dinner to be held on Wednesday 15 March 2017 at Broadmeadow Racecourse.

Markets SILVER MASTERPIECES from Wilson & Wilson

The Olive Tree Markets have built up a loyal following during the past nine years as one of the best artisan markets in the region. But it’s not just the shoppers who are coming back time and time again. The markets also have a core group of stallholders, many of whom have been there from its fledgeling beginnings in 2008.

Among those is Newcastle artist and jewellery maker Zoe Tjanavaras, who set up her first stall just three months after the Olive Tree Markets were established and has been selling her bespoke creations there ever since.

“Olive Tree is definitely one of the strongest markets around, and it is so important as a showcase for artists and makers,” she said.

“The opportunity to have a storefront is pretty minimal so to have somewhere like the Olive Tree where you can just pop up and get out there in the marketplace is fantastic.”

A university and TAFE-trained artist and graphic designer, Zoe has been making things with her hands since she was a child and said she is constantly seeking out opportunities to learn new skills.

From welding steel sculptures with her Dad while growing up in Tamworth, Zoe moved on to working with metals on a more miniature scale as an adult, creating unique silver jewellery designs under the banner of Wilson & Wilson.

Using only 100 percent recycled silver that she melts down and fashions into earrings and necklaces in her home studio, Zoe said she was initially making the jewellery for herself before a friend asked her to create some pieces that could be sold in her boutique on Darby Street.

A stall at the markets soon followed, as well as a website and online store, which allows her to sell her creations to jewellery lovers far and wide.

Zoe said she loves making things that evoke memories, places, time and surrounds and draws inspiration from many areas, including her passion for painting.

“There has always been a bit of a missing link in the jewellery world if you are an artist and wanted to wear a piece of jewellery that reflected who you are,” she said.

“I wanted to make that link between my artistic origins and the jewellery world, so that was the inspiration for my art house range, in which I cast in silver a lot of my paint brushes and paint tubes and make jewellery from them.

“But I’m inspired by a lot of other things as well, so the earrings in my Warrior range are a little bit of a nod to my Greek background and my interest in strong women in history.

While my Frida range of necklaces was created after I saw the exhibition of work by Frida (Kahlo, a Mexican painter) in Sydney and was so overwhelmed by her life.

“I also incorporate pieces I have found and cast these items to be an accurate replica finished in silver, whether it be a paint brush I used in my studio or a shell I’ve found on the local beach.”

Each piece can take anywhere from an entire day to up to three days to create, with almost every aspect of the process completed by hand.

Like many of the stallholders at the Olive Tree Markets, Zoe has a passion for the time and effort that goes into handcrafting the items sold by herself and others, which she says is a “labour of love”.

“Not a lot of people understand just how much times goes into a piece. I only use recycled silver, and I do it all in my studio at home, I melt the metal down, forge it and beat it or cast objects in it, everything is hand polished and crafted,” she said.

“It’s that personal touch I love about my work and others’ work, that someone has actually made it from their own hands.

It is a true passion, a labour of love and often when I’m making a piece, I fall in love with it and find it really hard to sell.”

Once the donated bouquet has been delivered the customer responsible for the purchase that contributed to that donated bouquet receives an update via email and/or social media thanking them for their contribution, some images from the delivery and a bit of a story to keep that connection and positive energy flowing. Businesses and individuals are then encouraged to share this update and promote their involvement in supporting the greater community and hospital.

Each month we will be asking Dr Paws (aka Dr Matt BuchananPascall) to answer some important questions about our furry or feathered friend's health. Karen: I am the proud owner of a beautiful 12-month-old Border Collie, Jack. He has always loved jumping up on us to say Hi, and while we love this, he also does it to strangers, and this often frightens them. What can we do to stop him jumping up?

Dr Paws: Hi Karen. Firstly, know that you’re not alone! This is a really common problem with many dogs and similar to

many other behavioural issues, dog jumping usually starts in puppyhood.

While this can be a cute behaviour in our pint-sized furkids, it can create an annoying and sometimes dangerous problem when our pups are fully grown. So, let’s get this problem sorted for you!

Understanding why Jack jumps - Like Jack, puppies start the behaviour of jumping on people at an early age. Our typical reaction as fur-parents is to reach down and pat them or even tap our thighs to encourage them to jump up and say hi.

Dogs are opportunistic and will repeat behaviours that are rewarded. So, by us paying attention to them and getting them to repeat the behaviour, the jumping soon becomes a habit.

How to stop Jack jumping - Here’s the big secret: preventing Jack from jumping depends more on your behaviour than it does his! You’ll need your whole family on side to make sure everyone is consistent with him so that he has the best chance to learn what’s expected of him.

You’ll need only to remember a couple of simple rules: 1. No more petting, talking or looking at Jack when he jumps up. Simply cross your arms, turn your back and ignore him.

2. No more scolding him for jumping as dogs see this as a form of attention.

If Jack responds well and calms down, then ask him to sit and then reward him with a pat or treat. If he then tries to jump up again, simply follow step 1 and turn around and ignore him.

My number 1 tip - Try to pre-empt Jack’s jumping and replace it with a behaviour you want. For example, if you know that Jack always runs up and jumps on you to greet you, instead ask him to sit before he gets close enough to jump and then reward that behaviour with a big pat. He’ll learn soon enough.

Being a responsible dog owner and taking the best care of your dog is easy. Here are 6 things you can do to be the best parent to your fur baby: • Always clean up after your dog, pick up poo when out and about • Always keep your dog on a leash in public unless you are in an off-leash area • Make sure your dog can be identified with a collar, tag and microchip • Register your dog with Council so it can be identified if it becomes lost • Keep your dog in your yard • Consider desexing your dog Newcastle City Council rangers are out in the community to provide advice on being a responsible dog owner and to make sure everyone is doing the right thing.

Footloose and leash free - Give your dog some space to run at Newcastle's off-leash areas, where dogs are allowed to be exercised off leash. Make sure your dog is kept under effective control by a competent person at all times. Dogs are permitted off leash between sunrise and sunset only except in time restricted areas.

You can find a listing of all off leash areas - as well as the rules for using them - on Council's website. Obeying the rules for off-leash areas makes it a more enjoyable experience for you and your pet.

Doggie dining al fresco - Do you love to take your pooch out and about? Wish Fido could come along when you're dining out? Dogs are now allowed in many kerbside outdoor dining areas. Your dog can join you for al fresco dining if you: • Keep your dog on a lead and on the ground • Do not feed your dog on the premises • Have the restaurant owner's permission.

Registering Rex (and all dogs) - All dogs and cats are required to be registered - the registry is designed to return lost pets to their owners and to promote responsible pet ownership in the community. You can register your pet online at the NSW Pet Registry, in person at Council's Administration Centre and at any RSPCA centre. All puppies born or dogs purchased must also be permanently identified with a microchip by 12 weeks of age, point of sale, OR change of ownership, whichever occurs first. Note that microchipping does not take the place of council registration - you must still register your pet at six months of age.

Tag up - When dogs or cats are in a public place, they must wear an identification disc on their collar that is engraved with their name and their owner's contact number and/or address.

All cats that are allowed to roam should wear a collar and tag.

“I think that using colour in a wardrobe is definitely a way to make things a little bit more fun,” she said.

“Life can be so boring, so monotonous. It can be so scheduled and structured that I think colour just makes it so much more exciting, anything could happen, you can take your outfit from day to night with a little bit more colour as opposed to making it safe by sticking to more neutral tones.

“I think red is a fantastic colour for Autumn/Winter, to wrap yourself in an oversized red coat, what an incredible statement to be making with your fashion.”

Boots of various lengths and a splash of denim are also on the hit list of trends to watch out for this Autumn/Winter.

“Over the knee boots are starting to come out in a major way and also ankle boots that cling a little bit more, that are made out of a stretchy neoprene are absolutely amazing, they’re beautiful,” she said.

“Distressed denim isn’t going to go anywhere and it looks so effortlessly chic in every season, but I think in Autumn/Winter it started to come out a lot more.

“They’re my three staples – get a really good pair of boots, a really good pair of distressed denim and a nice staple coat.

“I think that February and March are the perfect months to start building that Autumn/Winter wardrobe because by the time the cooler weather hits you’re kind of scrambling to find something that may be out of stock or is something that you absolutely love.”

Got a thirst in this hot weather? Before you go to the fridge and grab a soft drink read this first! If we consume more sugar than our body needs it turns to fat and is a major contributing factor of fatty liver disease.

Secondly, it will increase your chance of type 2 diabetes which is a long-term metabolic disorder which results from obesity and poor diet and lifestyle. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to long-term illnesses such as heart disease, strokes, blindness, and kidney failure.

Finally, sugar weakens your tooth enamel which causes tooth decay and erosion and expensive dental bills!

So what do you drink instead? The most quench-thirsting drink is water. Yes boring we know! But water is the most valuable natural resource for sustainable development and quality of life. Consumption of water is associated with a number of health benefits, including an increase in energy intake, obesity prevention, and improved cognitive function. Need to jazz up your water? Add some freshly squeezed lemon or lime.

Rio is geographically stunning with the mountains surrounding the city and the world famous beaches.

Spend time at Copacabana or Imapena beaches, take a walk, swim, or just sit and people watch while having the local drink- a Caipirinha (yum!).

Must do’s are a trip to Sugarloaf Mountain and cable car ride, a tour to Corcovado and Christ the Redeemer statue for stunning views, and a Samba show at night. A favela tour is also interesting (slum areas of the city). Built on the side of the mountain, each can be home to 2500 to 80,000 people.

Iguassu Falls is situated on the border of Brazil and Argentina and are best seen from both sides.

Whilst Argentina has 85% of the falls, Brazil has 100% of the views! It is simply spectacular.

Buenos Aires is very sophisticated, beautiful wide, tree-lined avenues and gorgeous European architecture. Districts to visit are La Boca (Italian area) with lots of markets, artists, colourful buildings and the famous La Boca stadium, Recoleta district is most famous for the cemetery where Eva Peron’s monument is. It is a lovely district to have lunch, with gorgeous sidewalk cafes.

South America is famous for meat. In Brazil you must visit a churrascaria restaurant which serve ‘all you can eat’ skewered meats of every variety.

In Argentina you can get a great steak anywhere!

Also try empanadas (savoury pastry with fillings) and dulche de leche, a caramel spread you can find anywhere- in ice-cream (to die for), on pastries or just eat it by the spoonful.

Michelin Star chef and Newcastle born and bred Scott Webster is now adding his unique culinary skills to weddings across the region.

Harking back to his early training at the Royal Sydney Golf Club, Scott and his teams at Carrington Place and Throsby Street Providore are now providing quality cuisine and catering for weddings and private functions at Merewether Golf Club.

Scott has worked in London at the Savoy Hotel and in Leysin, Switzerland at the Grand Hotel. Scott also worked at the Regent Hotel and the Boulevard Hotels in Sydney and has travelled and worked extensively throughout Europe, the US, Canada and Asia in the past 30 years.

In 2003 Scott was lured back to London where he opened his successful Osia restaurant. He made the decision to return to Australia three years later to allow his young family to be closer to their ageing grandparents. Carrington Place in harbour-front Newcastle was the immediate result of his return to his birthplace, much to the delight of food lovers in the Hunter region and further afield. In 2016, his Singapore Osia was awarded a Michelin Star.

Throsby Street Providore in Wickham is a European business concept catering to today’s more educated clientele, which he attributes to TV food programming and the art of the “celebrity chef.” It is a food emporium in the tradition of the world’s great cities offering items that were once exclusive to a fine restaurant.

That technology, including three-dimensional beam-tracing software, has allowed the creators of the Aurora Diamond to produce a visibly more beautiful diamond with a greater “return of light”, which is measured according to its brilliance, fire, sparkle and light symmetry. The brilliance of a diamond refers to the intense white light that radiates from the precious gem, while its fire relates to the vivid flashes of colour you can see as the light bends inside the diamond.

The sparkle of the stone can be seen in the dramatic pinpoints of light that occur as a diamond moves, while the light symmetry is based on how evenly light is distributed from within. All Aurora Diamonds have a minimum total lightperformance grade of Ultimate 1 as certified by the world leaders in the area, Sarine Technologies.

They are also independently certified according to their cut, colour, clarity and carat by the Belgium-based International Gemological Institute (IGI), which is the largest independent gemological laboratory worldwide.

at Newcastle Flower Markets

The seed of an idea germinated during a visit to a local produce market will finally come into bloom this month with the launch of the Newcastle Flower Markets.

Initially operating as a trade-only market two days each week, the venture will organically grow over time to include a third day of operation and include a designated time during which it will also be open to the public.

Set to launch at the end of March, the Newcastle Flower Markets will fill a significant gap in the local industry according to their founder, Newcastle event stylist Jessica EckfordAguilera, with florists and stylists currently having to travel to the Sydney Flower Market to source products.

“It’s something that I’ve been working on for quite some time and we desperately need it in Newcastle,” she said.

“Obviously being in the industry myself for the last 15 years, I know it’s very stressful for florists to have to travel down to

Sydney, get there at 3am, line up and find a park to buy stock.

By the time you finish, come back and clean flowers, it’s a whole day out of your week. Newcastle is such growing city, why shouldn’t we have our own markets here?”

Aside from allowing florists from Newcastle and the Hunter to access fresh and cut flowers far closer to home, Jessica believes it could also bring more business to the city by attracting buyers from the central west and mid north coast who would traditionally travel to the Sydney market.

“If it eliminates travel it could bring more business into Newcastle from all the Tamworth and Armidale people who go to Sydney, all the Taree, Port Macquarie businesses - why can’t we bring them here?

“And I think the great thing is that it’s not just florists anymore that require flowers, it is cake designers, stylists, boutique owners and other businesses like that as well. It was definitely something that was needed.”

The Newcastle Flower Markets will be held at Sandgate, operating alongside the Newcastle City Fruit and Vegetable market on Tuesday and Thursday from 5am to 9.30am.

Jessica said they expected to have around eight growers and one large wholesaler on board when the markets are launched, with a plan to expand their numbers and the variety on offer to ensure they truly are a viable alternative to attending the Sydney markets.

“Florists are popping up everywhere and speaking with these florists, 90 per cent of their trade is weddings and weddings are getting bigger, more elaborate and florals are a huge part of that. It’s vital for us to be able to have the quality and variety there for them to be able to execute these kinds of events here and in the Hunter Valley,” she said.

When they eventually expand into Fridays, they will also open between 9.30am and 12.30pm to give the general public a chance to purchase fresh flowers and fresh produce.

Creating a harmonious working relationship between the new market and the existing one was an essential element of the arrangement for Jessica, who was inspired to create the business in part by the Sandgate fruit and vegetable merchants.

“Working alongside the Newcastle City fruit and vegetable market in Sandgate, our aim is to build a strong community market where we all support each other. I have a real passion for growers and how hard they work,” she said.

“How it all started was that I was creating a big event in Sydney and I actually went to the markets to get some fruit and vegetables for our models for the runway. I was chatting to one of the farmers there about fruit and vegetables who was complaining about being squashed out by the big players.'

“I walked out that day and just went ‘That is it, I am going to help these guys.’ So part of the reason I created the flower markets collaborating with these boys was to put them back on the map and get people buying those fruit and vegetables at that public market on the Friday as well as their florals.

“I think this will be such a positive thing for Newcastle as a whole and will create a lot more than just happy florists.”
