Salam Sejahtera from Malaysia We pray for your safety during this unprecedented Covid-19 global crisis, which has sadly claimed the lives of our surgical colleagues in various parts of the world. Despite the horrors that we are witnessing daily, we shall continue to persevere and the endure, chasing the proverbial light at the end of this depressing tunnel. Late last year, the College of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine Malaysia (CSAMM) formed the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the next instalment of the International Surgical Week to be held in Malaysia. The 49 th World Congress of Surgery, International Surgical Week 2021 in Kuala Lumpur will be jointly organised with the 47th Congress of the CSAMM on 29 August to 2 September 2021. The CSAMM has been appointed by MCI Geneva, the professional conference organiser, for the ISW 2021 to assist in the running of this large international surgical meeting. We are anticipating at least 2’000 delegates for this meeting. The LOC is formed from senior members of the surgical fraternity in both the private and the public sector. It has already held two meetings on 15 December 2019 and 2 February 2020, before being interrupted by the escalating situation of the pandemic. There is inclusion of student representatives from the Malaysian Surgical Students Society in the LOC, hoping to inspire future talents. The Director-General of Health of Malaysia, Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, has been selected as Chair of the LOC, noting his experience as a serving Council Member of the International Surgical Society (ISS/SIC). Supporting the LOC is the CSAMM Secretariat led by Ms Molly Kong and Mr Alexander Choon. The Chair of the LOC is, who is

Local coordinators will provide assistance to the programme coordinators of each integrated society, with an additional role in suggesting candidates for local speakers and chairs for some of the sessions. They will also support organising the social programme for each society. The LOC also plans to have a Partners’ Programme for the spouses of delegates, with the local tourism authority and related tour agency already agreeing to sponsor a Partners’ Programme which includes a complimentary tour of Kuala Lumpur and surroundings The work of the LOC has been hampered by the COVID-19 crisis and the subsequent Movement Control Order (MCO) in Malaysia. We all hope that the crisis will be resolved by the end of the year. With the strong support from the Malaysian Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) and the Ministry of Health Malaysia, it is anticipated that the ISW 2021 together with the 47th Congress of the CSAMM will be a success.
