2019 Krakow

On Sunday, August 11, 2019, before the onset of the vibrant IATSIC sessions of the WCS in Krakow, various committee meetings and well attended workshops were held. The bylaws and constitution of the Association were updated and reviewed, and are now ready for ratification at next AGM. Future strategies were identified and working groups were established.

Education: Chair Scott D’Amours

DSTC – Chair Tarek Razek • 47 courses offered in 2019 (800 surgeons, 50 anaesthesiologists trained) • A strategy for broadening the educational scope was adopted. • Educational programs and courses in principle should be applicable to needs. For DSTC, a basket of slide sets and lectures will be made available to structure each course to the needs of the environment. • A new edition of the DSTC manual launched, updated and edited by Ken

Boffard. • DSTC committee has been working on a major revision of slide sets for lectures and cases. New slide sets (in part) were piloted in Oslo and Sydney in 2019. A full set will be made available to course coordinators and directors, probably by July 2020. • The course director manual has been revised with major input from DATC

DATC – Chair Jonathan O. White • Increasing number of DSTC/DATC programs internationally

• Becoming more formalized and aligned with DSTC • Encouraging the development of more international faculty for an expanding number of courses. • Development of online course material

NTMC – Chair Ranjith N. Ellawala • An inaugural course and instructor course was successfully provided in Addis Ababa in June 2019, in cooperation with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, funded by the AO Alliance Foundation and Oslo University Hospital. • A subsequent course was held in

November 2019. • A draft MOU with the Ethiopian Dept of Health is being developed, planned for implementation over the next few years. Future funding from the AO Alliance Foundation depends on completion of this MOU. • Several courses were planned for 2020 in Ethiopia – now on hold, pending

Covid19 and confirmation of funding. • WHO has developed the Basic Emergency Course (BEC) and is interested in co-branding with IATSIC to make NTMC an “advanced” trauma management course, but remaining under the ownership of IATSIC. Discussions are in progress.

Global commitments: ongoing and future projects

• Offering collaborative educational programs for conflict situations and austere conditions was addressed during workshops in Krakow. An MOU with ICRC was signed in 2019, but the contact person then left the ICRC. Cooperation in training courses and educational material is foreseen. Waiting for new contacts. • Exploring potential cooperation with other humanitarian agencies (MSF) for training collaboration. • Sri Lanka and Malaysia conferences

August 2020: E. Steyn and K. Boffard will represent IATSIC. • Assistance was offered to WHO to update the Guidelines for Essential Trauma Care. IATSIC was then invited to provide input on new guideline development. C. Mock, T. Hardcastle and T. Gaarder to represent IATSIC in the process. • G4 Alliance meeting not possible to attend. Participating in monthly international telephonic meetings. Exploring potential future benefits for IATSIC, E. Steyn and T. Gaarder

Membership

• Recruitment opportunities occur at every DSTC course. A proposal was accepted at the ISS/SIC Council meeting to enroll new members at DSTC courses and that membership fees are then deferred until the next year. Additional administrative hours should be minimal. • We welcome the new membership fee structure for ISS/SIC, allowing more members from LMICs.

KL conference preparations • Increased focus on speakers from

LMICs • Professor Ken Boffard will be formally invited to deliver the Don Trunkey lecture. • Three travel scholars to be selected via the ISS Foundation infrastructure. • Any additional funds available will be

The Batu Caves near Kuala Lumpur

Networking

• AAST in San Diego: formal IATSIC representation on the International Relations Committee, represented by the past president of IATSIC, Tina

Gaarder. • Cooperation with ECTES in the form of a Guest symposium. This will be deferred to ECTES 2021 (Oslo) • Website content and maintenance – future strategies need to be addressed.

Members of IATSIC all over the world are battling different stages of Covid-19 in their hospitals, we wish them strength and good health. Please take good care of yourselves during these difficult times.
