Signature Home Home & Design Magazine 2018

It is an honor to be a collaborator on the Home & Design Magazine 2018 Signature Home. The highly anticipated annual project is the result of dedication and expertise from Southwest Florida’s best-of-the-best in home furnishings and building. The pages that follow give you a peek inside this year’s project, Parkstone Terrace, located in the peaceful community of The Concession at Lakewood Ranch, Florida.

With the help of Celebrity Designers Windsor Smith and Thomas O’Brien of Century Furniture, the home was designed to encourage conversation and togetherness while maintaining a modern yet inviting aesthetic. Luxurious textures create variation in the mostly neutral color palette, which was selected to complement the natural beauty of the home’s breathtaking backyard view. Together, sophistication, function, and a bit of playfulness create an unexpected yet cohesive design. Interior design professionals can source all the Home & Design Magazine 2018 Signature Home’s furnishings, along with thousands of other products, through International Design Source.

N o- 1

How do your designs work for the open concept homes like the Home & Design 2018 Signature Home? I want to build rooms that don’t just accommodate us, but drive us. Rooms to frame who we want to be — grounded by the best of the past, fully present in the now, and anticipating tomorrow.

What inspires your new collection? I take great inspiration from those estates abroad where the treasures of multiple generations live so peacefully side by side. That commingling can be pure alchemy, forging a power that’s hard to pin down. You can say the juxtapositions of this collection aim for what I try to bring to every room: a balance between something familiar and unexpected, modern and ancient...sometimes daring, yet undeniably serene.

Do you have a favorite new piece, and why?

It’s hard to choose, but I’m especially fond of our four-sided Meridian sofa. Watch your family’s daily traffic, and you’ll see how rooms have more directions than the sofa-and-twochairs-in-front-of-the-fireplace convention allows. There’s a new freedom that comes from putting a large, rectangular island for seating at room center. More than fun and different, it allows us to be together even when pursuing different activities. Especially in rooms that are too large for one seating area, and too small for two, it creates a versatile hub for living.

Why do you believe in mixing styles?

There are so many pretty rooms in the world, but for a space to feel palpable and truly intriguing you need to marry opposites: intricate, delicate touches alongside minimal geometry or soft nubby materials like bouclé against sleek metals...well-built rooms are well told stories, and I’ve always loved the romance that arises between unlikely characters.

How does who you are translate to design?

I’m a wife, a mother, a fashion lover, a traveler and avid adventurer. And I’m intrepid when it comes to exploring how what I create has the necessary layers to engage over time, and provoke us in the here and now. Even a single chair holds possibilities to imagine how we can live more beautifully and succinctly... Don’t you agree?

ROCK HOUSE FARM FAMILY OF BRANDS

Harley Ferguson Shuford, Sr. established Century Furniture Company in 1947 as a selling agent for local upholstery lines. The company is known for managing the complexities of a broad product line while continually improving its quality and service. In July of 2013 Alex Shuford II and his children acquired Century Furniture from the parent company CVI, making them the sole owners of Century Furniture and its wholly owned subsidiaries. At this time, Alex Shuford III was named President of Century Furniture, marking the succession of the third family generation to lead Century. In October 2015, the company acquired Hancock & Moore, Jessica Charles, Randall Allen and Cabot Wrenn along with their manufacturing facilities. The acquisition positions the company as the largest manufacturer in the high-end segment of the furniture market. The company also purchased a key building in Longview, North Carolina in which they have consolidated all of their shipping allowing for better service and delivery to their retail and designer partners. Since its beginnings in 1947, Century Furniture has been providing finely crafted luxury furniture with impeccable design and quality. Now a third generation family-owned company, the Century team is focused on designing collections one piece at a time with the intention of creating rooms that feel collected, not ordered. Scale, proportions and decoration are balanced and then refined as the piece comes to life, such as in these CENTURY DETAILS PROGRAMS, found online at CenturyFurniture.com/Details/Programs.aspx

Jimmy grew up learning the skills of an artisan, turning wood into beautiful, heirloom furniture. Up to 80 hours are spent handcrafting a piece of furniture. Custom-made furniture is the purest form of self-expression—that is why they have spent the past 30 years creating furniture exactly as you envisioned.
