No matter the style, from traditional and classic to coastal and contemporary, glamour is always a welcomed design element. Metallic fabrics, high-gloss lacquer wood grains, crushed velvet, and mixed metals are all the rage. The juxtaposition of bling with basics steps up the ante, so go ahead and add the sparkle!

N o- 1

TOTALLY THOM Interior designer Thom Filicia is founder and principal of New York City-based design firm, Thom Filicia, Inc. Since launching the acclaimed enterprise in 1998, Thom Filicia, Inc. has earned him widespread exposure. Filicia is universally known for his ability to create stunningly modern, yet classic interiors that retain an inviting aesthetic reflecting the individuality of his clients. The success of his franchise has led to partnerships and projects with leading brands including Kravet, Soicher Marin, Vanguard, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Naples Home & Design Magazine, and many more.

When did you first become interested in interior design? I’ve always had an interest in art and architecture, and my parents nurtured that from an early age. When I was 9, I actually asked for a skylight for Christmas… not the typical request from Santa, but it definitely made a point.

What is your favorite part about designing spaces? I love the entire process of designing interiors, from the conceptual phase, laying out the floor plans and material selection to the installation and styling at the end. I’ve also really loved growing my home collection and the perspective that product design gives me within my interior design business. This symbiotic relationship between the home collection and interior design business allows for a wonderful laboratory of development and inspiration.

Tell me about the inspiration behind your recent Naples Signature Home project? The Home & Design Signature Home was a collaboration between Thom Filicia and the designers of Cinnabar Design (Naples, FL), who interpreted the Thom Filicia aesthetic and infused it into the design of a “signature home” through the use of Thom Filicia Home Collection fabrics, furniture, artwork, rugs, bedding and wall covering to create a look and feel that is authentic to the location and lifestyle of Naples. I love that the house and décor of the Signature Home responds to a modern lifestyle, but with a sophisticated old Florida take. I describe my general style as liveable, layered luxury. My goal is to create spaces that are sophisticated and stylish while also being warm and welcoming. The aesthetic of this home is less about having a “coastal” feel and more about being true to its lifestyle and sense of place. The home feels authentic to its architecture, its location, and the point of view of the people who’d live there. ids1.com

OCTOBER 2016

What do you think the biggest trend will be at the upcoming High Point Market? Some of the trends I think we’ll see at High Point are earthy pastel hues, natural textures, mixed materials (especially when it comes to metals), and art-inspired wall coverings.

Of all the recent trends, what is your favorite? My favorite trend is towards individuals, families, and brands really personalizing their spaces and creating interiors that are an honest reflection of who they are and how they live. It’s no longer about creating a backdrop because of a trend or look you’re trying to achieve, but about feeling comfortable in your interiors and allowing them to tell an authentic story about where you’ve been, where you are, and where you’re going.

To learn more about Thom, visit thomfilicia.com or view pieces from his collection in person in one of our four IDS furniture showrooms.

COMMENTS FROM KRAVET The insights and wisdom of five generations spanning nearly 100 years have set Kravet, Inc. apart as both a family business and an industry leader. Creative Director SCOTT KRAVET took a moment with DESIGN [S]WATCH to talk about current trends, celebrity collaborations, the inspiration for their product offerings, and the brand as a whole. Here is what Scott had to share with us.

Photographs courtesy of Kravet

From Diane von Furstenberg and Kate Spade New York to Barbara Barry and Thom Filicia, Kravet has an impressive lineup of celebrity designers. How do you decide with whom to collaborate? Kravet is fortunate to partner with talented designers — both in the interior design industry and the world of fashion, as well. We look at our whole line up of licensors and seek out a complimentary viewpoint.

What factors (i.e. the fashion industry, Pantone colors, etc.) provide inspiration for each season’s collections? We are influenced by fashion, of course, but also by art galleries, exhibits at museums around the world, and our natural surroundings.

If you could have dinner with anyone (including deceased), whom would you invite? I would have dinner with Frank Lloyd Wright.

What do you predict the most popular pattern or design will be at the upcoming fall Market? The most popular fabric is currently textures in long color lines. Velvet is making a huge comeback, and modern is on the rise.

Currently, what is your favorite pattern/design? My favorite is an archival design that has a blend of Art Nouveau and a little Art Deco.

What is the most important advice you have received about building a career in design? My advice is to mix all your findings together, and change your interiors often.

Visit kravet.com to learn more about all of Kravet’s offerings. With more than 45,000 fabrics from which to choose, Kravet is a leader in the interior design industry, offering the widest range of colors, patterns, textures and styles exclusively to-the-trade.

Sarah Richardson introduces HARMONY FOR KRAVET Harmony’s printed and woven fabrics are suited for a variety of interiors: from modern urban spaces to traditional country retreats, and everything in between. Inspired by nature, architecture and classic elements of design, the collection presents a current take on classic floral and damask patterns alongside modern designs like Asian-inspired bamboo trellis and geometric motifs.

BE BRIGHT, BE BOLD Vibrant, alive, and playful…the latest and greatest fabrics and wall coverings keep turning up the volume. Bright, punchy designs bring a lot of energy to your next project. The most interesting patterns include zebra, Chinoiserie, paisley, and floral. The sky is the limit on the color palette. Layering of multiple designs within a given room setting provides a richness and interest to the otherwise safe choice of neutrals.

So, you have a client that wants or needs something totally unique. Often a space requires a product that simply doesn’t already exist, and you need to completely customize it. Well there are many manufacturers that can collaborate with you to make your vision a reality.

The construction of case goods and furniture has changed incredibly in the last century. Once the purview of skilled craftsman, the advent of mass industrialization changed the landscape of furniture making into one of mass production. However, recent innovations have altered the landscape yet again to allow for true personalization. At International Design Source, we work with several manufacturers who can provide full customization from drawings and CAD layouts, as well as vendors who allow near limitless modifications in color, finish, hardware and size in their respective collections.
