N o- 1

LILLIAN AUGUST Lillian August has established her namesake brand as a force in the fine furniture and textile world. Recognized internationally as a fabric and furniture designer, Lillian is known for bringing her passion for style and gracious living to life with signature home furnishing collections — embracing fashion and global trends that express her great American Designer style.

What has remained constant to your creative approach, and what continues to evolve?

I have always told my design team that “you can never be too creative.” My vision may vary, but I always start with understanding my customers’ lifestyle needs and the artistic approach I bring to my work. I have an international audience for my textiles and furniture designs and am inspired to reach high with my ever changing collections.

We understand you were once a Martha Graham dancer. Did that experience influence your approach to design?

Having a background in the fine arts has always helped me stay inspired and keep my brand creative. Martha was a pioneer who believed in her ability to create masterpiece dance compositions. Her belief that greatness has no boundaries was very inspiring for me as a fine artist, and later, as a businesswoman.

Where do you seek inspiration?

I believe that the home furnishings industry is influenced by the couture fashion industry for trends and inspiration. As all designers do, I follow fashion trends to help guide me. But it is my customer and how I may contribute to how they live with beauty and fashion that ultimately inspires me.

You are known for innovation with color in your designs. How do you experiment, and what gets you excited today?

I am a colorist and a trained fine artist. I am comfortable working with bold, courageous color stories. My customers benefit that I solve intricate layering of pattern and color in my collections for their personalized interiors.

What was your greatest success, and why is it so significant to you?

Being a woman entrepreneur! The significance speaks for itself, but I am most fortunate that my three sons trusted me many years ago and joined the business. We all have different talents. My son, Michael Weiss, has his own very successful designer collection of mid-century modern furniture for Vanguard Furniture. Dan Weiss and John Weiss are the entrepreneurial executive force behind Lillian August Designs.

What project (or upcoming project) are you most excited about?

I am most excited about the Show House project we are completing now in Naples, Florida. It will be featured as the Home & Design 2017 Signature Home. This collaboration between Suzanne Costa, a local interior designer, and my team has resulted in a total home statement of my Lillian August design aesthetic — through my textiles, furniture, artwork, and accessories. No detail was spared, and each room story illustrated throughout the home is a unique lifestyle statement. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the developer, Kristen Williams, and interior furnishings source, International Design Source.

JOHN

V I E W

N o- 2

ROBSHAW If you had a signature color, what would it be? Indigo

What are the favorite patterns from your Duralee collection and why? KEDARA — I like the look of a misprinted block. SATA — I like how the design looks misprinted shifting between a bold statement and a light outline.

If you weren’t a designer, what would you be? A painter… still trying to be actually!

What was your favorite part about working with Duralee on your collection?

I enjoyed working with the great ladies at Duralee. It was fun watching them try and steer me down different aesthetic paths with all of their experiences with prints over the ages.

If you were to pick a song as your anthem, what is it? “Let’s Stick Together” by Brian Ferry.

Design trends tend to be cyclical. What trend would you like to see make a comeback? Which do you wish would never return? I don’t follow trends so much. Happy to let them all live in this massive world.

If you were to collaborate with any fashion designer, who would it be?

I’m a big fan of Dries Van Noten. He is all over the place with prints, and I can’t quite figure him out. It intrigues me.

Where is the most inspiring place you’ve ever been?

Always changing, buy maybe Kathmandu in Nepal. The temples are incredible, as well as the pollution!

If you could live on any movie set, which one would you pick? The English Patient. Deserts, planes and lovely ladies lost in caves.

What is the best advice you could give a new designer just starting out?

Apprentice at your favorite designer’s studio. It’s the best way to understand the business, see it in action, and make some new friends.

The textile designer John Robshaw travels the world in search of inspiration for his textile designs. After earning a fine art degree and studying block printing in China, he travelled to India to find natural indigo dye. Instead, he fell in love with the fabric-making traditions of local artisans. Now he gives back as a consultant for Aid to Artisans, a non-profit organization that creates economic opportunities for craftspeople in developing nations. ids1.com

If you had to choose any other designer to design your home, who would it be and why?

Sara Bengur, the Turkish American star. She has just the right touch and gets my vibe.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I can juggle, play a deadly game of squash, and I dive.

What’s on your wish-list right now? Around the world trip for 6 months, please!

To learn more about John, visit duralee.com or view his collection in person in one of our fabric showrooms.

THE right SWATCH You can have a fabulous piece of furniture, but it’s not truly compelling until just the right fabric and wall covering is chosen to complement it. Fueling designers with new inspiration, these selections elicit both bold colors and geometric patterns, as well as muted tones and natural elements.
