What do you consider to be the most important piece of furniture in someone’s home? No question a fabulous, inviting and well-made sofa — one that’s glamorous and livable at the same time. Most families are on the go go go. At the end of the day, when you finally get to sit and relax for cocktails and conversation, you want to be ultra-comfortable. Family rooms are the heart of the home, and there is no more important piece of furniture in that room than the sofa.
What is the most interesting design project you’ve ever had? Barclay Butera is an renowned interior designer, lifestyle entrepreneur, and author whose Newport Beach design firm is celebrating its 25th anniversary. His signature aesthetic is a fresh take on classic all-American styling that flawlessly translates into traditional, transitional, and contemporary interiors. In addition to his private-client design business, Butera is an accomplished speaker, author of five design books, and operates showrooms in Newport Beach and Corona del Mar, California and Park City, Utah. He has been recognized with top design honors nationally and internationally and featured in Traditional Home, House Beautiful, Luxe, Elle Décor, Ocean Home, Veranda and Mountain Living magazines.
I have been very blessed to have designed some magnificent homes in my day, including Sinatra’s Twin Palms Estate, Bette Davis’ cottage in Laguna Beach, and Desi Arnez Junior’s home in Bel Air. But honestly the coolest project ever was being asked to design a custom Rolls-Royce Dawn automobile. I decided to create a signature blue and white “Yacht on Wheels.” A convertible, naturally. That was an amazing opportunity and the process was incredible. I went to London to meet with the factory, and Rolls Royce debuted the car at Concours d’elegance in Pebble Beach. Dream come true!
Blue is definitely your signature color. Why? Blue is fresh, clean, optimistic. I am such a coastal guy as you know. I have always loved the beach and the lifestyle. The blue skies, the blue of the
ocean, its all so organic. Blue is the best neutral! It can calm down or rev up a room like no other color. I remember years ago when Traditional Home magazine dubbed me “The Blue Boy.” I loved that. My next book is going to really delve into my love affair with blue. I’ll keep you posted with that launch date!
What else inspires you? Well, I am so fortunate that I am able to travel the globe. You can’t help but get inspired by exotic locals in Greece, the briskness and bustle of London, and warmth of Paris. I keep photo journals, so that when I get home, the memories are fresh for design inspiration. You never know what’s going to hit — one of my wallpaper patterns is an incredible fretwork design taken from the ceiling of a chapel in the English countryside.
What did you think about the interpretation of your look in the Naples Signature home? When I first drove up to the house it was a jaw-dropping experience — what a stunner! I am a huge fan of crisp white exteriors. The interior design is spectacular. I love the way Carleen took inspiration from my signature style, and then put her personal twist on it, incorporating my collections from Lexington Home Brands and other licensees. It was incredibly chic. I am so honored to be a part of this prestigious project.
