BARRY

GORALNICK

Your new capsule collection with Vanguard was designed with casual entertaining in mind. Can you expand on what inspired the collection's purpose and design?

I have found that the way my clients live has evolved over the years. Kitchens are more open and bleed onto living spaces, dining rooms become spaces for eating, working at home and doing homework, outdoor and indoor living has melded. Spaces have to be more fluid and flexible to respond to these needs. In addition to what I hear from my clients, we did extensive research into the lifestyles of Baby Boomers, Millennials and Gen Z. They are entertaining more at home — having parties to show off cooking and bar tending skills. We created pieces that support that lifestyle and are flexible for multiple uses — martini tables, a rolling bar cart, a bar, game chairs with casters, and round cocktail tables (where you can easily pull up another chair, and are more congenial) — shapes that are gracious and telegraph ease. Everybody’s multitasking: why shouldn’t your furnishings?

What is your favorite piece from the collection and why?

BARRY GORALNICK began his career as an architect and has evolved into a notable designer of rugs, lighting, and furniture. His designs are iconic for their versatility and unique design aesthetic. No single time period predominates. There is a blending of beloved periods with a sensibility of now. These styles are oneof-a-kind statement pieces that lend themselves to an individual eclectic design expression. Each piece in the collection is distinctive, yet plays well with others from within VANGUARD and beyond. ids1.com

The Spencer Cocktail Table ( featured above ). This piece appeals to the architect, as well as the interior designer in me. I reconceived the cocktail table in a fresh way. It is the focal piece of any seating group. Rather than having the lower shelf, which clients want for display or storage, I have oriented it vertically. It’s the perfect aesthetic solution with an innovative new way to incorporate display. Plus, with accents and accessories stored below, the top can remain free for entertaining.

If you had a signature shape, what would it be?

Curves have always been more interesting to me — they’re sensual, intriguing, yet friendly. For example, a round dining table or cocktail table is more inviting and convivial than a rectangle.

If you had to choose a famous novel to describe your design philosophy, what novel would you choose? All the things I’ve studied and am passionate about in my life inform my designs. I try to look at each project or collection holistically with all of these elements in mind to create the Blended Modern lifestyle.

The first Edith Wharton novel I read was The Age of Innocence. In her books and in her guidebook, The Decoration of Houses, which she co-wrote with architect Ogden Codman, she writes about the relationship between art, architecture, design, gardens, and the lives they manifested. She portrayed the relationship between travel, art, house, garden, street, city, and national or regional values. She uses these backgrounds to illustrate and create satire and comment on her character's values and behaviors. I apply her approach to writing to my process of design.

What was the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?

Look to the future and the past simultaneously in order to deliver something truly new. This was the best advice that was given to me by Noel McKinnell, the well-known architect, when I was at Harvard. It’s important to master the basics of history and design. In order to create new design we have to know what came before. Armed with that knowledge, you can feel free to break the rules and be as original as possible.

What led you to a career in the fabric and textile industry?

I really just fell in love with textiles from a very early age, and it just grew from there. I loved all things art and design related from the time I could walk and talk. When I was handed an art project in school to create a pattern in repeat, I was so completely mesmerized by it that I pursued textile design in college, and never stopped.

At the creative helm of the SCALAMANDRÉ for over two years, SUSAN NORTH brings her passion to the brand. As creative director, she oversees all creative aspects of the brand, including all product development of fabric, wall covering, trimming and furnishing introductions, as well as visual merchandising, marketing initiatives and brand image. With more than 20 years of experience in high-end product design and creative direction, she previously held the positions of Managing Director, New Business Initiatives at Thibaut, as well as Senior Vice President and Creative Director at Schumacher.

From your vantage point, what professional advice would you share with interior designers?

There’s a lot of emphasis on performance these days. It has made fabrics a lot more practical, which is wonderful. I am a big fan of nano-finishes for natural fabrics, so I would suggest adding such a finish wherever there are concerns about stains. But it’s not necessary to have contract-suitable abrasion for residential use—higher numbers do not indicate a better fabric. Fabrics in the 12,000-20,000 range are perfectly fine for residential upholstery.

What was the inspiration behind the new Modern Luxury collection?

Scalamandré has such a rich tradition in silks, damasks, and trimmings, and I wanted to take those signature elements and create something modern with them in texture, pattern, and coloration. The collection is very up-to-date in its neutral focused palette, but there is a luxurious sensibility to it that is not about minimalism. It’s a way to say something entirely new that still speaks to the tradition of the brand.

How do you stay inspired?

Everything is inspiration. The way the light casts patterns on a wall, unexpected colors in nature, a display window you see walking down a street, or a beautifully made film. There are also more obvious influences like fashion and art. I personally love photography, and I find myself shooting images of patterns of all kinds everywhere I go.

Who are your design influences, and how do they affect what you do?

I can’t really say I have had one or even just a few design influences. I am constantly inspired by historic textiles, and love nothing more than exploring textile archives. I find that the work of many of the best interior designers past and present also really influences how I see textiles. The brilliant and sometime surprising way that fabrics are used and paired together really influences how I develop my own collections.

What is your favorite part of your job? Why?

I love that I feel like I am always learning and discovering something new. Textiles and wall coverings involve many processes and involve amazing craftsmanship and skill. There is also constant innovation with new finishes and techniques. There is always something new to see. I also love color more than anything, and am so excited to see a new design evolve through the use of color.

What current projects right now are you excited about? Is there anything for which we should be looking?

We have a new, exciting outdoor collection coming up for next year. There are all kinds of new qualities being developed in outdoor that make this a very exciting category for indoor use as well as outside the home. And we are developing an beautiful, updated new range of hand printed wallpapers, which is another great tradition of Scalamandré. To learn more about Scalamandré, visit Scalamandre.com or view its collections in person in one of our fabric showrooms. Background image from the new Modern Luxe collection. Can you give us a sneak peak of what’s next for Scalamandré?

We are introducing a pretty new collection this spring named Botanica (swatches above). It’s full of beautiful florals and foliage patterns, in prints, embroideries and cut velvets. Florals are such a signature for Scalamandré, and these are up-to-date in style and color. Every season, I add a small range of trimmings to the mix, and this collection includes some very pretty ones, as tapes, braids and fringes.
