y the end of 2021, India regained its position in oil consumption as the third largest global consumer.

The economic growth of the country can mostly be attributed to its energy demand. Naturally, the demand for oil and gas is anticipated to increase at a rate of 50% by the year 2030 as compared to a global growth rate of seven per cent for the same period.

If we observe the expected energy demand category wise, then according to India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), the oil is predicted to grow at double speed and reach a mark of eleven million barrels by 2045, while diesel is also predicted to grow by double to one-six-three metric tons by 2030, with the duo of diesel and gasoline sharing fifty-eight per cent of country’s oil demand by 2045. On the same line, natural gas consumption in the country is expected to grow by twenty-five billion cubic meters – bcm – with an average yearly growth rate of nine per cent by 2024.

Global Technical Services Total Lubrication Management

If we think about another question of who or what reduces a machine’s efforts, the simple answer is a lubricant or oil.

But if not maintained and managed regularly that same lubricant/oil can cause major problems as experienced by East Word Power station.

At one of their underground facilities, unmanaged dirty lubricant/oil was causing frequent suctions and issues like hydraulic-shuttle-valves failures. And in peak times, the cost of repair would go as high as $200 and sometimes hundreds of man-hours would be lost in the additional labour required to bring back the work on track.

To solve the issue permanently, they called Global Technical Services (GTS), one of the best experts in lubrication management. GTS took stock of the situation and installed an automated fine filtration and onsite condition monitoring system for contamination control.

After that, East Word Power Station saw no such breakdowns and saved hundreds of thousands of dollars.

And GTS made it a case study of another of their successes.

We at Global Technical Services (GTS), are a service providing company in the oil and gas sector. We are in the business of ‘Lubrication Management’.

Good lubrication of machines is the fulcrum to industrial productivity. Good lubrication improves the continuous running of machines without any breakdown for years and years. Hence, it is essential for the growth of production and economy.

Our Total Lubrication Management includes services like lubricant storage, handling and dispensing, leading to a contamination-free lubrication (oil and grease) to machines.

maintenance. This leads to achieving oil conservation, which is crucial for cost reduction. Oil conservation is also a vital national need for saving import costs of base oils.

Hence, we play an important role in productivity in the industrial sector, and national economy. This service of lubrication management is very important to improve the profitability of the industry by the way of cost-cutting in manufacturing.

Hence, saving lubricants leads to cost-cutting, besides, also saving the environment. Good lubrication also leads to energy conservation by 3% - 6% in the cement industry.

Tell us more about GTS’s offerings and what aspects make it stand out in the cutthroat competition?

Our company was founded in the year 2000 by Mr K B Mathur, who has the background of working with oil industry at Senior Positions.

Subsequently, we approached the cement industry which operates under a highly dusty environment. It leads to lubricants getting contaminated with dust and dirt. Thus, feeding such contaminated lubricants causes damage to heavy-duty machines. To counter this, we established various systems of feeding clean lubricants to the machines.

We introduced Oil Conservation Programme by establishing Central Lubrication Cell (CLC) at every plant, wherever we got the opportunity to work. Each plant where we have a CLC which also contains an Oil Testing Laboratory, Filtration Units, and condition-based oil changing system to save oil.

This has resulted in reducing the downtime in those plants considerably and improving the overall mechanical

Please brief us about the journey of GTS in the industry and how it is excelling in its niche.

The company working is based on a professional, systematic, and knowledge-based approach. Our Founder Director worked with the oil industry for about 35 years. He was absolutely clear about the way forward, for establishing the best lubrication practices in the cement and mining industry as these industries operate in a dusty environment.

Cement plants have also set up mines, where they mine limestones. It is the raw material that is then crushed to form ‘Clinkers’ which ultimately gets converted to cement.

Cement is a very important and basic input material for national infrastructure.

Our company is following key professionals playing a major role in establishing world-class lubrication programmes in the Indian industry.

GTS is a leader and is providing niche lubrication management to various cement companies and mining industries in the country.

Being an experienced leader, share your opinion on how the adoption of modern technologies like AI and ML is impacting the oil and gas industry and how are you adapting to the change?

Yes. We have developed the ‘Lubrication Software’ which we call Total Lubrication Management (TLM). The Software is based on AI and ML. It is linked with oil testing sensors, reports for machines by incorporating the oil test reports and forecasts machine failures times ahead, leading to timely corrective action.

This projection saves a considerable amount of money in machines’ maintenance besides improving the life of the machine and ultimately saves cost to the industry. GTS plays the desired role in oil and energy conservation by implementing TLM in the industry.

AI and ML are greatly helping service providers like GTS in preventing machine failures and improving the life of machines.

Considering the current pandemic what initial challenges did you face and how did you drive GTS to sustain operations while ensuring the safety of your employees at the same time?

In our company, there are approximately 165 technical people and technicians. Their health and care are of utmost importance to us. Most of them work at sites of client companies (Cement Plants) who have outsourced their lubrication management to us.

The staff must be very careful in carrying out their jobs efficiently, during the current period of the pandemic. Since all the cement plants are in remote areas of the country and are basically processing plants, it was a challenge.

Most of the technicians work continuously for months, without a break. They have to do their jobs of lubrication, achieving schedule, filtration, oil testing and maintaining various records, required as part of the MIS to be submitted to the plant Managers/Engineers.

Yet, our people have been doing their job very effectively during this pandemic period. The safety distances norms, wearing masks as part of their PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) have been very carefully adopted by them while carrying out their assigned work.

During the pandemic, the work has been going on in the factories, plants and mines, as it was in normal times, but with added care and precautions prescribed by the plant managements. The basic caution is, to be careful and adopt the guiding factors to remain safe from the pandemic.

Like wearing masks and personal cleanliness have been the key drivers which we have emphasized and carried in our work. We have adopted the guidelines provided by the industry while carrying out our job competently.

What would be your advice to the young generation who want to venture into the oil and gas industry?

The oil and gas industry will continue to thrive in the years and decades ahead. This sector is going to be the continued major source of energy for at least two more decades before other sources of non-conventional energy can replace them in a cost-effective and efficient manner. The sector will keep growing at a CAGR of 6% to 8%.

The young professionals must adapt to the new technologies which lead to work in a more efficient way than in the previous decades. And they must adapt to the corresponding professional practices required to implement software-based programmes and digitalization.

Internet of Things (IoT) based working is now the way forward, leading to Industry 4.0. Young engineers/executives will have to embrace and master the new ways to work and progress.

How do you envision scaling your operations and offerings in 2022 and beyond?

Lubrication Management has grown in the last 20 years.

Before that, there was no concept of lubrication, and its importance was not known to the industry.

With the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and the Internet of things (IoT), machinecondition monitoring and machine-controlling will become more efficient and easier. The plant control room which occupies large spaces, will shrink to the plant’s desktop computers.

Softwares are being developed to compare similar machines’ operational efficiency and their productivity.

This will lead to far better machine operations, which will improve machine maintenance and improved plant operations – leading to more productivity.

e have all heard of the terms ‘global warming and climate change.’ The effects of this phenomenon are very devasting and scary, but the real question lies in asking ‘what has given rise to these drastically changing dramatic environmental occurrences.’

And that is where greenhouse gases come into the picture.

A greenhouse gas is any gaseous compound in the environment that can capture infrared rays that further hold and trap heat in the atmosphere. Trapping of this heat results in the greenhouse effect, which ultimately leads to global warming.

Therefore, it is evident that our planet earth reacts strongly to the various changes in the atmosphere. Changes can be in the form of the increasing amount of CO2, methane, and other greenhouse gases.

Pertaining to the problem of climate change, in December 2015, a legally binding international treaty on climate change took place in Paris. It is famously known as the Paris Agreement. This agreement aims to limit global warming to well below two degrees Celsius or preferably 1.5 degrees Celsius. This agreement is seen as a landmark as it brings together all the nations with a joint mission of undertaking ambitious efforts to combat climate change and adapt to its effects.

Therefore, these countries have taken up the big task of Net Zero Emission by 2035.

But is this dream vague? Will this distant dream come true? And is it practically possible for countries to achieve their ambitious goal of Net

just a statement but a hardcore commitment that has a detailed plan of action.

Moving Towards Net Zero One of the good news in combating climate change is that the technology required to reach net-zero does exist, and thankfully it is also affordable. One of the key elements to combat this is through powering economics. It can be done by replacing polluting coal, gas, and oil-powered station with renewable sources of energy like winds and solar farms. Such a change would dramatically cut down carbon emissions, and the good part about using renewable energy is that it is not only cleaner but a cheaper form of fuel.

How Real is the Commitment?

The nationally determined contributors are working rigorously not just to lay the proper plan but to make sure that these strategies to combat climate change are appropriately implemented. Hence, commitment is very real. Every country, city, financial institution, industry, and different organization has adopted realistic plans for transitioning to zero net emission by 2035.

Apart from this, a wholesome switch to electric transport would also play a crucial role in lowering emissions and slashing air pollution in major metropolitical cities.

Electric vehicles have largely become a trend, one of the major reasons being they are efficient and cheaper. Many countries, especially the ones that have committed to net zero emissions, have proposed plans for the huge sale of fossil-fuel-powered cars.

Apart from industries and daily life emissions, other kinds of harmful emissions come from the agricultural sector. The livestock produces a significant number of gaseous compounds in the form of methane and other greenhouse gases. In order to reduce emissions, we humans need to alter our lifestyles and eating habits. One of the best examples of how real it can get is through the widely accepted instance of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has proved to be very important and recovering for the climate. Hence, it is essential to get the economic kickers in place to get the temperature down. They will bring a genuine opportunity to promote renewable sources of energy, smart buildings, green transport, and a whole range of other interventions which will slow down climate change.

Achievable Target or Not? As we saw above, there are various existing technologies that can support the ultimate goal of combating climate change. But in order to achieve the net-zero emission by 2035, there should be a rigorous and committed plan of action that should be implemented on a large scale.

This will not only require new policies in place but the right amount of investment in renewable sources of energy and careful attention to social and economic trade-offs. Last but not least, the targets are not that high, but additional innovation can further improve technology solutions and reduce costs.

This is one of the common questions that is discussed everywhere these days. The diverse effects of the carbon footprint caused by different sources of pollution have led to global warming, unusual climatic variations and a massive imbalance in the global ecosystem.

The companies in the manufacturing of oil and gas industry should minutely study the entire process to identify all the possibilities of excessive emissions, spillage, wastage, release of harmful gases and many other hazardous happenings. Ÿ Active Contribution in Developing Carbon Sinks Researchers worldwide have identified the importance of carbon sinks in maintaining the balance of the global ecosystem. Carbon sinks are the natural or artificial places which have the capacity to absorb the atmospheric carbon and retain it for an indefinite period of time. They are essential in reducing the carbon percentage in the air. To a certain extent, forests, grasslands, marshes, mangroves, lakes, and oceans act as carbon sinks.

Many global corporations have identified their role and have adopted calculative measures for massive tree plantations and conditional reduction of industrial activities in the industrial activities. Ÿ Alternative Power Sources Using on-site renewable energy sources for power generation can help provide a cost-effective alternative to diesel fuel. By replacing polluting diesel power generators with a solar PV and battery setup, the companies can not only reduce emissions significantly but also reach the break-

even on their investment in the next five years.

Integrating different oil rigs and platforms to the central grid instead of the traditional decentralized diesel generation system is working well. If the high-level producers electrified most of their operations, that could add up to a substantial carbon generation and a decent amount of cost reduction as well. Ÿ Minimize Unwarranted Emissions The Leak Detection And Repair (LDAR) methodology and installation of the Vapour Recovery units (VRU) can help the oil companies in emissions of greenhouse gases like Methane. Other important practices of applying the best technologies of double mechanical seals on pumps, carbon packing ring sets on the valve stem and dry gas seals on compressors.

These can considerably control the uncontrolled emissions and contribute to the global cause. Ÿ Equipment Electrification Some companies have already started replacing the gas boilers with electric steam supported production systems.

They have involved high-pressure storage for nighttime steam supply to support separation units. The project will pay for itself in less than ten years.

In many circumstances, there is already a good business case, on purely financial grounds, for combining the use of solar and gas in place of conventional boilers. Ÿ Greater Reliability Through Reduction in Nonroutine Flaring It was known that some companies found that 70 per cent of all flaring emissions came from nonroutine flaring, mainly resulting from poor reliability. So, the priority was to focus on optimizing and upgrading the

operations. This can be achieved by conducting preventive maintenance and timely replacement of the high friction and regular motion parts and equipment. Such measures not only aid in reducing emissions but also contribute to raising production.

Quality conscious companies are making significant efforts to harness better reliability through point-based maintenance and multitasking. It is discussed that predictive analytics is expected to help reduce the frequency of outages to compressors or other equipment. Ÿ Increasing CCUS The technology is projected to play only a minor role in the sector’s overall decarbonization efforts; oil and gas companies can still significantly influence its adoption and development. These facilities capture the carbon contents and store and aid in absorbing the carbon from the polluted air. This is a growing trend seen as a responsible and progressive step towards the global cause.

Leaping Ahead for The Progressive Difference As the world unites to fight the common cause of reducing the carbon footprint, companies from oil and gas are increasingly becoming cautious and active change initiators. With a new outlook on the manufacturing process, more and more research is being done on organizing and controlling the production process. As the process gets optimized for enhancement of the productivity and reduction in the carbon emissions, we can hope for a significant step in curbing and controlling the carbon generation, These initiatives will substantially contribute to reducing carbon emissions and hope to speed up the global initiative of building a greener and cleaner world.
