COMMUNITY HEROES In this months edition, we're taking time to say thank you to the individuals, local causes, businesses and charities that have gone above and beyond over recent weeks. There's still time to send us details of your community heroes. Get in touch via email insidetorfaen@gmail.com with the name of the person or group, and a little bit about what they have done to support others within the community over the previous few weeks.

COUNCILLORS CORNER The following is a message from Councillor Giles Davies from Abersychan ward: This covid-19 pandemic has been a massive challenge here in the north of Torfaen, as it has everywhere. However, our communities are strong and have responded brilliantly. As a councillor in the north of the Borough, I see my role as playing a part in helping co-ordinate that response, to help keep people safe, keep services going as much as possible and helping provide people with the support they need. Keeping services going in the face of this crisis has meant a lot of change – from social care to refuse collections to schools and so many of the other things council workers do to keep our area going. Those services have had to plan for coping with fewer staff, as some council employees have had to shield or self-isolate for periods. They’ve had to adapt to more home-working and to running services like refuse collections or the Household Waste Centre with the added strain of the need for social distancing where possible, to keep staff and the public safe. It’s been quite a balancing act. Our care workers have been absolute stars, looking after those who need help in their homes and people in care homes, despite the concerns they must have felt for their own welfare. Our schools staff and staff in areas like the Play Service and Sports Development have helped run key worker childcare facilities. Teachers have kept children learning remotely where possible, having to adjust suddenly to the new situation. None of this has been ideal, but they’ve stepped up to do their best, going above and beyond the call of duty. Thank you to them all. Covid-19 has also meant entirely new services having to be created, such as the tracing scheme to help stem the spread of the virus. Council staff have volunteered for redeployment to help with this scheme, working alongside Health Service staff. Business support staff have paid out over £9million to local businesses to help support them through these tough times.

Of course, the council is just part of a much wider community response, and I’d like to thank the organisations in the north of the Borough who’ve done so much good work during the lockdown, to tackle the health and financial challenges this virus has inflicted on so many local people. Councillors set up a Coronavirus Support Fund at the start of the pandemic, all contributing to a fund. That fund has been added to by Community Councils, and has been used to purchase over £30,000 worth of food for local organisations across Torfaen. In the north, we have worked with the Trussell Trust, Garnsychan Partnership, Noddfa Church, Trac2, Blaenavon Town Council and their Healthy Blaenavon Team to get food out to people in need, whether that’s because they’re shielding or because the pandemic has affected their finances. Working with Torfaen Voluntary Alliance, the fund has also helped local organisations with £12,000 in grants to help with the local response, and we’ve also donated toiletries to patients in hospitals who were struggling to get supplies without family visits being allowed. Thank you to all the organisations and volunteers who’ve made this response possible, and remembered that in tough times, we are stronger together than we are alone. I know these last few months have not been easy, so I’d like to thank all the local people who’ve done their bit, including those who’ve followed the guidelines and stayed at home as much as possible to help stop the spread of the virus. I know that lots of council services have had to run a bit differently to normal – some services have had to be delayed or changed – so I’d also like to thank local people for their patience and understanding. This pandemic has caused so much suffering, and I look forward to the day when it is well and truly a thing of the past. But I hope that the community spirit it has fostered will remain in the future.

COMMUNITY HEROES: VITALIZE RADIO A thank you from: Dan Williams (Volunteer Founder of Vitalize Radio) To: The Vitalize Radio team of volunteers Why: For the amazing efforts that you go to each day whether on the radio or off. The Coronavirus pandemic has shown how each and every one of you can adapt to suit the situation as and when required. Your level of commitment whether on your shows, on social media, or elsewhere has been impressive. Whilst we have been faced with testing times, you have all gone above and beyond any expectations. I cannot thank you enough for all that you continue to do for and within the community on a weekly basis.

COMMUNITY HEROES: JAN THOMAS A thank you from: Vitalize Radio, & the community of Torfaen Why: For the contributions you make to the community of Torfaen. Not only do you voluntarily present a weekly radio show on Vitalize Radio for the community, you also sit as part of the management team for Vitalize Radio. Beyond that, your contributions to the community across Torfaen are simply amazing. Launching Torfaen Plant and Produce Swap, and running Griffithstown Community Garden especially over recent weeks has certainly helped to put a smile on many peoples faces, and for that we would like to say thank you!

COMMUNITY HEROES: BUSY BEES BLAENAVON A thank you from: Rhiannon Russell-Jones Why: For all the fab work they do all the time. Especially during lockdown by caring for key workers children

A thank you from: Donna Mcdighton

A thank you from: Amy Samways Why: They have remained open throughout lockdown supporting families of key workers to be able to carry on working. They have been a huge help for childcare for both my boys and a huge support to me. Both my boys have loved going there. They are a true credit to the families they support, going above and beyond for them all.

COMMUNITY HEROES: BUSY BEES BLAENAVON A thank you from: Anonymous Why: They are supporting local key workers and their families during this difficult time by continuing to provide essential childcare. Not only are they amazing in the current circumstances but they are always an amazing support to many young families. They took care of my children for 10yrs from when they were babies. Their enthusiasm, dedication, flexibility, understanding and care (I could go on forever) is like no other nursery I have even known or heard about. When hearing other friends and family members experiences with childcare I quickly realised how special Busy Bees Blaenavon are and I felt extremely lucky to have them help me raise my little ones into wondering children.

COMMUNITY HEROES: BUSY BEES BLAENAVON A thank you from: Emma Livings Why: They have done an amazing job remaining open over the last few weeks to care for the children of key workers. The team who have been working have been amazing and even through everything that has been going on have done a fantastic job of caring for the children.

A thank you from: Toni Doble Why: For their continued support throughout this situation they have been brilliant with childcare! I am a deputy sister working in the frontline in A&E at NHH along with my husband who is also working on the frontline and we couldn’t of managed without them. They have been amazing each and everyone of them! Very well deserved!

COMMUNITY HEROES: BUSY BEES BLAENAVON A thank you from: Nicola Lawrence Why: For the continued support they provide to the families of Key Workers. While I have not needed childcare myself during the lockdown, they have provided vital services for Key Workers during these difficult times. A thank you from: Rebecca Cox Why: They have supported key worker families by staying open to provide essential care during this unprecedented time. Sue and the team have enabled other vital services such as the NHS and schools to remain open by providing childcare for keyworkers.

A thank you from: Sophie Gallear Why: They have done an amazing job staying open for the children of keyworkers during this time

COMMUNITY HEROES: KATE BURTON - MANAGER OF THE GARNSYCHAN PARTNERSHIP A thank you from: Giles Davies (Councillor of Abersychan ward & Chair of Garnsychan Partnership) Why: For going above and beyond in supporting the community through COVID-19. I (Giles) am blown away by her commitment and non stop working practices during these difficult times, putting in many unpaid hours.

COMMUNITY HEROES: CLAIRE ROBATHAN (TEAM KOTECHA DANCE FITNESS) A thank you from: Lynette Robathan Why: She has a dance fitness group (TEAM KOTECHA) that was set up to support those with mental and physical health issues and has continued to support her members and the wider community throughout lockdown. She has been doing free classes on her public page every Sunday and has been doing regular check ins with her regular members (all 74 of them) every day in the members group. She has also been shopping for mum who is extremely vulnerable and making sure that she has everything she could need on top of continuing to teach her A LEVEL law and criminology classes 5 days a week.

COMMUNITY HEROES: CLAIRE ROBATHAN (TEAM KOTECHA DANCE FITNESS) A thank you from: Laura Dunn Why: Not only is she continuing to work as a teacher and a carer to her mother, Claire is also providing free dance classes to encourage the community to keep fit and healthy during these uncertain times. This has been greatly appreciated by everyone as it raises everyone’s spirits without having to worry about paying for classes.

COMMUNITY HEROES: CLAIRE ROBATHAN (TEAM KOTECHA DANCE FITNESS) A thank you from: Jade Mason Why: I would like to nominate her as since the lockdown and covid she has been there for the whole team as support as mental health has had a big impact on everyone and she is always there to help and talk. I also think she has been amazing with every Sunday she has hosted a free live dance fitness class via facebook live for everyone not just members and this is free and she has gone out of her own way to do all this while still working her other job via online. She is a kind person and always goes out of her way to help anyone.

A thank you from: Claire Langley Why: She is an amazing women that encourages and inspires loads

COMMUNITY HEROES: CLAIRE ROBATHAN (TEAM KOTECHA DANCE FITNESS) A thank you from: Rhiannon Moon Why: Claire is a wonder woman and deserves so much credit! She is the most warm hearted, hard working, thoughtful and energetic person who is also massively driven by supporting the community whether its her dance group or supporting local charities one being Cwmbran foodbank. Claire has simply been nothingless than an absolute rock and support unit to her family and friends during lockdown. My personal reasons at a time where I felt I was losing control of my life due to mental health issues, medication wasn't working and additional stress of lockdown Claire has been an amazing support to myself and others, specially during these uncertain times. Claire set up a dance group a couple of years ago in memory of a her best friend who sadly committed suicide and the dance group has become one big family that spreads possitivity. empowerment, friendships, kindness and a feel good vibe for all ages and sizes. Continued

COMMUNITY HEROES: CLAIRE ROBATHAN (TEAM KOTECHA DANCE FITNESS) Since joining the group a couple of months ago I have already seen a difference in myself, I have gained confidence and noticed an improvement in my mental health and gained so much happiness and confidence from Claire's classes. During lock down Claire has continued with the classes every week and continues to spread so much joy, togetherness and positivity every sunday during her dance class. It's such a great opportunity to just block out the stress and worries of coronavirus and lockdown for an hour. This is something she has offered free to everyone in the public to help others during lock down, not just the ones that would normally attend her classes. Claire has simply gone above and beyond checking in with everyone that attends her dance classes on a daily basis to make sure her team are ok and if not she is always there to offer confidential support and advice with such a positive can do/ you got this attitude. She has been doing all this as well as working from home as a college tutor. Claire has a huge part in my heart as well as a lot of others she has helped physically and mentally previously to lock down and also more than ever during lock down.

COMMUNITY HEROES: GEORGINA JAMES - FOUNDER OF GEEJ FITNESS (BLAENAVON) A thank you from: Elinor Jones Why: Georgina normally runs a dance fitness class in Blaenavon and Cwmbran three times a week and also puts on workshops or masterclasses over weekends she has always been very dedicated to this class and has always been supportive of the ladies who attend helping them to boost their confidence and accept themselves. Throughout lockdown Georgina took to Facebook to continue doing dance classes 4 times a week and alongside has run weekly challenges for our ‘girl gang.’ These challenges have kept the ladies involved very motivated and focussed throughout lockdown and we’ve completed physical, mind, water and dietary challenges to make us reflect on ourselves and to big ourselves up. Many of the girls have been furloughed or are selfemployed so this has been a difficult time for us but with the support of Georgina and these challenges we have been able to find solace in each other and she has been extremely supportive. I feel that without this to focus on and take part in my mental wellbeing really could have dipped and I would have been a lot less productive during this lockdown.

COMMUNITY HEROES: GEORGINA JAMES - FOUNDER OF GEEJ FITNESS (BLAENAVON) A thank you from: Elisha Steed Why: GEEJ Fitness is a personal coach who normally (out of lockdown) runs weekly dance/fitness classes for those who wish to incorporate physical activity into their lives. Since lockdown Georgina has really gone above and beyond for everyone not only those who attend her weekly classes! She has been running 3 lives on Facebook a week for everyone along with setting challenges to encourage mental health, physical activity and embracing your surroundings in the best way possible! What makes Georgina stand out is that she constantly reminds everyone to look for the positives in the situation which as we all know can be difficult with the current circumstances and is on hand 24/7 for those who need extra support and encouragement. As someone who sometimes suffers with my mental health Georgina has been a godsend during lockdown and I think she really deserves to be praised for this, I also think those who have been following Georgina’s lives and support will agree with me!

COMMUNITY HEROES: A THANK YOU FROM COUNCILLOR JANET JONES (BLAENAVON) Councillor Janet Jones would like to thank the following Community Heroes: Mike George - (Mike's Fruit & Veg on Facebook) The staff at Co-Op Blaenavon Well Pharmacy - Broad Street The young student working part time in Waitrose who also travels to volunteer with the ambulance service and paramedics. She is a credit to her family and community. The members of Bethel Baptist Church who continue to support the community members with phone calls and shopping.
