VACCINATION UPDATE As of 28th June 2021, more than 751,740 vaccines (combination of 1st and 2nd doses) have been given across the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board area.

In the health boards vaccination update newsletter for the week commencing 28th June, ABUHB confirms that 87% of the Health Board adult population has been vaccinated with first doses offered to everyone aged 18 and over. Second doses are also progressing well with 74% of 40-49 year olds being fully vaccinated. Join the thousands that have been vaccinated... Call 0300 303 1373 and you’ll be offered a first dose appointment within 72 hours.

Second doses… The 1st dose of Covid vaccine provides estimated 2536% protection against the Delta variant, protecting against being symptomatic. The 2nd dose raises the level of protection up to 77-82%. Therefore it is important that you receive both doses of the Covid vaccination for maximum protection.

Give more than just a room Llamau are currently looking for Supported Lodgings host providers in Torfaen to provide a home for young people aged 16-21 who may be leaving care, or may not be able to live at home. You don't need any special qualifications to be a host provider, and it doesn't matter whether you are married or single, working or unemployed. All you need is a spare room and be willing and open to help a young person develop the skills and confidence they will need to become an independent young adult, and eventually move into and manage their own home. In return, you will receive a financial reward, ongoing training and support along with regular supervision and guidance from our Supported Lodgings Support Worker. Please call or text Josh Horgan on 07966 981006 during office hours to arrange an informal chat or email joshhorgan@llamau.org.uk. If you know someone who lives within Torfaen and may be interested, please let them know about this brilliant opportunity to support the young people of Torfaen.

LOCAL CAMPAIGNER BACKS CHARITY CALL FOR RESEARCH CASH BOOST Giles Davies has joined a campaign calling for £50 million injection over five years to target research into motor neurone disease which kills six people every day. United To End MND is led by a coalition of MND charities, neurologists and people with MND. Giles, a campaigner from Abersychan, has joined forces with a coalition of charities, neurologists and people with motor neurone disease to call on the Government to target £50 million of investment into the terminal illness. Along with more than 100,000 people, Giles has signed a petition calling for the Government ‘to significantly increase targeted research for motor neurone disease (MND)’. Government funding for MND research, according to the Motor Neurone Disease Association, currently stands at less than £5 million a year. The charity itself has recently committed £5.7 million to research this year. The campaign, United To End MND, led by the MND Association, MND Scotland, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, neurologists and people with the disease, is calling on the government to invest £50 million over five years in research directly targeted at understanding the causes and identifying potential treatments and ultimately a cure for the disease.

PAGE 8

MND affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord which tells your muscles what to do. This leads the muscles to weaken, stiffen and waste. MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink, and ultimately, breathe. It is a terminal illness with no effective treatments and no cure. Local campaigner Giles lost his father with MND in 2017, he said after watching his father try and fight this awful condition feeling helpless, he fully supports this campaign for extra investment into research and possibly life extending treatment for all sufferers. The campaign has the backing of a number of VIPs, who have encouraged support across social media including Coronation Street vicar Daniel Brocklebank, film star Hugh Grant, GMB presenter Charlotte Hawkins, entrepreneur and ‘Dragon’ Deborah Meaden, broadcaster Jeremy Vine and former sportsmen who are living with MND; Scottish rugby international Doddie Weir and footballer Stephen Darby. CIRCULATE RECYCLING Circulate Recycling is a project run by Garnsychan Partnership. Circulate Recycling provides a vital service to those in the community on a low income. Circulate collects unwanted household items that would otherwise go to landfill, and re-sells them at low cost to the community. The project also offers lowcost removals and house clearances. Circulate was classed as non-essential and therefore couldn't open during previous lockdowns but they have recently started to welcome volunteers back. Any collections can be booked in over the phone on 01495 793187 or through the Circulate Facebook page.
