Lasting Power of Attorney What is power of attorney? Simply put power of attorney is the documentation whereby you (the Donor) give authority to the people who you choose and trust (known as your attorney/s) to then make decisions for you if you cannot make them for yourself.

Who Am I ?

I was born on the 23rd of October 1931 in Swindon in England. I was educated at Selwood House. As a child, I enjoyed the cinema; my heroines from the age of eight onwards were Hollywood actresses. Towards the end of the second world war, I entered a beauty contest to find a pin up girl for Soldier Magazine, I came in third place.

This led to me working as a model in art classes and I also began to appear in local theatre productions. Having excelled in my elocution studies, after I had lied about my, at 14, I was offered a place to study at London Academy of Music and Drama (LAMDA), becoming the college's youngest student, starting in January 1946.

My first film role was in “Black Narcissus”, then it was “The Shop at Sly Corner”. It was then I changed my surname to that of my grandmother. I first came to public notice as a Blonde Bombshell, much in the style of Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield. I was promoted by my first husband Dennis Hamilton, mostly in sex film comedies and risqué modelling. After it was revealed that Hamilton had been defrauding me, I continued to play up to my established image, and I made tabloid headlines with the parties reportedly at my house. Later, I showed talent as a performer on TV, in recordings, also in cabaret, and I gained public popularity as a regular chat-show guest. I was also to give well-regarded film performances at different points on my career. I played the title role in “Queenie’s Castle” as well as regular TV appearances in “Z Cars”, “Dixon of Dock Green”, “Just William”, “The Sweeney”, and “Shoestring”. Film appearances in the 70’s, included, “The Amorous Milkman”, “The Pied Piper”, “Steptoe and Son Ride Again” amongst many others. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with Meningitis and twice underwent surgery to remove cancerous tumours. On the 4th of May 1984, aged 52 I passed away at the BMI Princess Margaret Hospital in Windsor of Ovarian Cancer…. WHO AM I ..?

In May 2016, a small group of friends, Chris Anderton, Dave Lucas, Steve McColgan, John Pearson, Jack Phillips, Steve Wagstaff, Phil Wainwright and myself, Ian Bulloch (The Magazine Editor) - “Volunteered” to try and help raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) by cycling from the “Dab of Soul” venue in Nantwich, to the home of “Seriously Soulful,” in Clifton, Bristol, a mere 148 miles or so! What prompted this altruistic effort was the fact that a mutual friend, Paul Thrower, had been diagnosed with MND the year before and this was our way of trying to raise awareness of this devastating random illness, which strikes without warning and for no real reason. Paul was very much at the core of our fund-raising efforts, his bravery and stoic humour in facing this disease and not allowing it to completely rule his life, was fantastic and so uplifting - it was his spirit, his “joie de vie” that provided the impetus, not only for the cycling group, but also for all of Paul’s fund raising friends from all over Europe. As a result, the fantastic sum of £22,000+ was raised for MNDA. Unfortunately, that year in November 2016, Paul passed away.

Ever since the original ride, there has been talk of a “return ride”. Well at last, it finally happening, on July 29th and 30th this year, the same group of riders - well, almost! Helen Anderton will be replacing Dave Lucas, And the group have decided to undertake the same journey only this time, going from Bristol to Nantwich. Still the same 148 miles, just in reverse. Hoping to raise more funds for the MNDA. We would appreciate if you could visit our Just Giving page and we would very much appreciate any donation that anyone can make.
