INSIDE CHESTERFIELD SOUTH MAGAZINE - ISSUE 16 - OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2022

Last month, as I prepared the magazine for print, I was saying that we had seen a change in the weather, with the onset of Autumn months. Well today, I believe that the heavens have actually opened up! Since around 8:30 this morning, the torrential downpour that we have had today, has not stopped. Although, looking out at this moment in time, it does seem to have stopped. Let’s hope that today’s downpour is not a trend beginning to start!

Who Am I ?

I was born on the 12th of August 1988 in Manchester, England. My parents originate from Belfast and Galway in Ireland and are travellers. As a child I started training to become a boxer. And in 2008, I won the ABA Super Heavyweight title. I then decided to turn professional later that year, at the age of 20 years old. After I had won the English Heavyweight title twice, I became the British and Commonwealth champion in 2011, by defeating Derek Chisora. I then won the Irish and WBO Inter-Continental titles, before defeating Derek Chisora again in 2014 in a rematch for the European and WBO International heavyweight titles. This success, along with the fact I was unbeaten in 24 fights, set up a match with long-reigning world champion Wladamir Klitscho in Germany, a fight I won by a unanimous decision. I was then to suffer mental health issues after also suffering from alcohol, drug and extreme weight gain issues. In 2016, I vacated the WBA, WBO and IBO titles, because of my ring inactivity. Later in 2018, I was to make a return to the ring and fought Deontay Wilder for the WBC heavyweight title. The fight was controversially scored as a draw. However, many people thought I had won. I fought Deontay Wilder twice since and beat him both times by knockouts. I then announced my retirement, although I am still unsure if I want to fight again, we will see. I am married to my wife Paris and we have six children, with another on the way. We currently live in Morecambe, many people call me the “Gypsy King” … WHO AM I ?
