oday, of the great city of Pollentia, which had an extension of around 20 hectares, one can visit some remains that give an idea of how those Roman Mallorcans lived and their customs. Thanks to the Consortium of the Roman City of Pollentia, which is in charge of overseeing the conservation, protection and dissemination of this site, visitors can discover the Portella (or Portezuela), the Forum and the Theatre.

The Casa de los Dos Tesoros, or ‘House of the Two Treasures’, is the best-preserved building and in it one can distinguish the different parts of its structure. The Casa del Jefe de Bronce (lit. ‘House of the Bronze Chief’) is on the opposite side of the street. Meanwhile the La Casa Noroeste (‘Northwestern House’) is the worst preserved, but on its foundations we can locate a fragment of the Roman Wall from the 3rd century AD. THE FORUM. This was the central area of the city, and in it we can find some interesting information on the urban organisation of Pollentia from the time it was established in the 1st century BC to the latest period, related to the extensive necropolis.

Era el área central de la ciudad, y en ella podemos observar interesantes datos sobre la organización urbana de Pollentia desde los momentos de fundación de la ciudad en el siglo I a.C, hasta la época más tardía relacionada con una extensa necrópolis.

Como elementos más importantes destacan el Templo Capitolino, dos templos menores, un amplio conjunto de Tabernae (área comercial), y varios elementos de tipo ornamental.

EL TEATRO. Ubicado en las afueras de la ciudad en dirección sur, muy cercano al lugar donde estaría situado

DAS FORUM. Im ehemaligen Stadtzentrum lässt sich verfolgen, wie die Verwaltung der Stadt organisiert war, von ihrer Gründung im I Jahrhundert v.Chr. bis zur Errichtung einer großen Nekropole in einer späteren Epoche.

In unmittelbarer Nähe des Zentrums lagen das Capitoli und zwei weitere religiöse Tempel, an die sich das Viertel der Händler und Handwerker (tabernae) anschloss.

Some of the more important elements that stand out are the Capitoline Temple, two lesser temples, a large Tabernae complex (commercial area) and several ornamental elements.

THE TEATRO. Located on the outskirts of the city towards the south, very close to the place where the port would have been in Roman times, the theatre is one of the most representative elements of the whole site. It has the peculiarity of being a theatre dug out of the rock and taking advantage of the natural incline in the terrain, and a fair amount of the structure has been conserved. In it one can clearly distinguish the three most significant elements: the cavea, the orchestra and the stage.

During the month of August the theatre resumes its former activity and becomes the venue for the Agosto a la Fresca programme organised by Alcúdia’s municipal council.

Visit the Pollentia Monographic Museum to enjoy an exhibition of the different materials recovered during the excavations carried out over past decades.

Durante el mes de agosto, el teatro recupera su antigua actividad y se convierte en el escenario del programa Agosto a la Fresca que organiza el Ayuntamiento de Alcúdia.

Visitando el Museo Monográfico de Pollentia, se puede disfrutar de una muestra de diversos materiales recuperados durante las campañas de excavación realizadas en décadas pasadas.

DAS TEATRO. Außerhalb der Stadt, in südlicher Richtung erhob sich in der Nähe des damaligen Hafens das Römische Theater, eines der imposantesten Bauwerke von Pollentia, das unter Ausnutzung des natürlichen Gefälles des Geländes aus dem Fels geschlagen wurde und in großen Teilen erhalten ist. Die drei wichtigsten Bestandteile – Sitzreihen (Cavea), Rangreihen (Orchestra) und Bühne kann man heute noch sehen.

Jedes Jahr im August erwacht das Theater zu neuem Leben, als Gastgeber des Kulturprogramms „Agosto a la fresca“, das von der Gemeindeverwaltung Alcúdia veranstaltet wird.

very year competitions like the Sailing Copa del Rey, PalmaVela or the Princesa Sofía Trophy, among others, attract thousands of professional yachtsmen and women and sailing enthusiasts from all over the world. In Mallorca sailing has a great following and courses are available for pupils, starting at a very young age, in the different sailing schools that can be found almost anywhere on the island.

On choppier days people can practise other sporting activities that are becoming increasingly fashionable.The staunchest fans of windsurfing, which has been practised on our coast for decades now, have made room to let in another great sport that can give you an unexpected adrenalin rush – kitesurfing.

All year long their kites, propelled by the wind and fastened to the sportsman or woman by a harness, decorate the coast with colours on beaches like Son Serra de Marina, Bahía de Pollença, Playa de Palma or Can Pastilla. Kitesurfing requires a great deal of agility and strength in the arms in order to be able to perform somersaults above the water. No surfing experience is necessary to start out.

Los incondicionales del Windsurf, que se practica en nuestra costa desde hace décadas, ha dejado espacio para la entrada de otro gran deporte que sube la adrenalina a niveles insospechados: el Kitesurf. Durante todo el año, sus cometas, propulsadas por el aire y unidas al deportista por un arnés, llenan de color el litoral en playas como Son Serra de Marina, la Bahía de Pollença, la Playa de Palma o Can Pastilla. Para practicar Kitesurf se requiere mucha agilidad y fuerza en los brazos para llevar a cabo las piruetas sobre el agua. Para iniciarse, no es necesario haber practicado surf previamente.

This phenomenon can be observed on very few occasions, after enough water has accumulated on the mountain of Puig Tomir and around. The flow of water partially feeds the aquifer of Pla de Sa Pobla and ends up in the torrent of Sant Miquel, and eventually l’Albufera in Mallorca.

The spectacular sight is famous on the island, attracting thousands of visitors who rush, camera in hand, to witness this unusual and almost “miraculous” spectacle.

HOW TO GET THERE: To reach the Finca Gabelli estate, you have to go to the village of Campanet, and from here to the chapel of Sant Miquel. Just a few minutes from the chapel, heading towards a nearby bridge with the same name, you will see the entrance to the Gabellí estate. Once inside the property you follow a broad forest track, pass the estate houses and you will soon come to the holm-oak wood where the springs rise up from the ground.

Este fenómeno puede observarse en muy contadas ocasiones, tras la acumulación de agua suficiente en el macizo de Puig Tomir y alrededores. El caudal alimenta en parte al acuífero del Pla de Sa Pobla y va a parar al torrente de Sant Miquel, y de ahí a l’Albufera de Mallorca.

Su espectacularidad es famosa en la isla, concitando a miles de visitantes que corren cámara en mano a ser testigos del inusual y casi “milagroso” espectáculo. ¿CÓMO LLEGAR? Para llegar a la finca Gabelli, hay que ir al pueblo de Campanet, y desde allí a la Ermita de Sant Miquel. A pocos minutos de la Ermita y en dirección a un puente cercano del mismo nombre, está la entrada a Gabelli. Una vez dentro, se debe seguir una ancha pista forestal, pasar las casas de la finca y pronto se llega al bosque de encinas en el que brotan las fuentes.

crew saw a series of red lights careering through the sky in the way of the plane. Seized by panic in the face of an imminent collision, the pilot decided to make an emergency landing in the airport of Manises, in Valencia.

That same morning, in the early hours, as a Spanish air force pilot chased a strange object for four hours until he was forced to return when he ran short on fuel, Mallorcan ufologist Pep Climet took some photos of UFOs near Fornalutx. Two days later Climent was unexpectedly visited in his home by the military, who requisitioned the negatives of the images he had taken in relation to the UFO case, offering no further explanation.

The presence of the military – first Americans and then Spaniards – zealously guarding the military base and the imposing radar the mountain is crowned with, has only served to boost the myth that Puig Major is a highly active detection centre of UFO phenomena which are systematically hidden from the public.

La presencia de militares, primero estadounidenses y después españoles, custodiando celosamente la base militar y el imponente radar que corona la montaña, no ha hecho sino que aumentar la leyenda de que el Puig Major es un centro muy activo en la detección de fenómenos OVNI que se ocultan sistemáticamente a la población.

There are several testimonies concerning this supposed extra-terrestrial base, ranging from that of some fishermen who claimed to have seen some luminous objects coming out of the sea in the ‘seventies, to that of researcher Pedro Amorós, who has spent years studying strange underwater noises which, moreover, dozens of divers say they too have heard.

In the mid-1970s the Mallorcan innkeeper Joan Coll occupied pages of the national press after claiming that he had made contact with aliens near Puig Major. He even led a group of people there to witness the sightings themselves.

Many ufology experts say that Mallorca lies in one of the planet’s 12 geomagnetic zones. They even believe that there is a mysterious triangle between the mountain of Montsterrat in Catalonia, the coast of Sóller and the island of Ibiza, which gives rise to inexplicable phenomena like those of the Bermuda Triangle.

The most up-to-date art always has a place in this majestic 18thcentury palace’ lish origin Gilbert & George, video artist Marianna Vassileva and the versatile Almangul Menlibayeva, among others.

This art space, without doubt the most emblematic in Palma, fosters the wealth of artistic activity by organising specialist workshops, giving grants to talented newcomers and recognising local work by promoting the Premis Ciutat plastic arts awards.

The Baroque building of Casal Solleric is one of the last stately homes built in the city in the mid-18th century. The Morell family, who own the space, wanted to turn the Solleric into a meeting point for artists and writers. In 1985 it was inaugurated as a contemporary art documentation and exhibition centre. As well as the exhibition halls, it has a book shop that specialises in contemporary art and photography, a shop and a pleasant café with terrace in the heart of Paseo del Borne.

El edificio barroco que conforma el Casal Solleric es una de las últimas casas señoriales que se construyeron en la ciudad a mediados del siglo XVIII. La familia Morell, propietaria del espacio, quiso convertir al Solleric en un punto de encuentro de artistas y escritores. En 1985 fue inaugurado como centro de exposiciones y documentación de arte contemporáneo. Además de las salas expositivas, cuenta con una librería especializada en arte contemporáneo y fotografía, una tienda y un agradable café con terraza en pleno Paseo del Borne.

Die Eigentümerfamilie Morell wollte das Stadthaus als Treffpunkt für Künstler und Schriftsteller etablieren und so wurde 1985 das Ausstellungs- und Dokumentationszentrum moderner Kunst eröffnet. Neben den Ausstellungssälen sind im Casal Solleric eine Fachbuchhandlung für zeitgenössische Kunst und Fotografie, ein Geschäft und ein hübsches Café untergebracht, dessen Terrasse direkt auf den Paseo del Borne geht.

taurants and bars is Santa Catalina, which has spaces like Sa Bodega de la Mar, Mig i Mig, Es Mercat and Aptc, among others, and where as well as having some good tapas and good wines, the atmosphere is pretty lively.

Not too far away, in the traditional La Lonja neighbourhood, two of the more remarkable establishments are Café La Lonja, with its special interior décor, and Forn de Sant Joan, which innovates its tapas menu every season.

In other places around the city Patxi, Tast or Bodega La Rambla are to be recommended as well.

Nearly all of the establishments in the Sa Gerreria have a Bohemian air to them, with an emphasis on Ca la Seu, Molta Barra, Quina Creu, Sa Farina, and of course the classic Bodega España. El Burladero, meanwhile, has a more authentic atmosphere, where you can try traditional Spanish food and some delicious “huevos rotos”, or Spanish stirred eggs.

As well as all the classics and delicious “raciones” (portions) and “variados” (mixed tapas dishes) of the Bar Bosch, the city’s vintage bar par excellence.

The Picasso Museum houses more than 3,500 works by the brilliant Malaga-born artist’

ACBA. The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) is devoted to works from the second half of the 20th century. The museum’s permanent exhibition does not include many works, but interesting temporary exhibitions are frequently held here. The building, inaugurated in 1995, combines straight and curved lines in a continuous dialogue between the interior spaces and the light from the exterior, and is the work of US architect Richard Meier.

CAIXAFORUM. The Caixaforum building is a former Modernist factory which has been converted into one of the most dynamic, active and lively cultural centres in Barcelona.

The building – a jewel of the city’s industrial heritage – houses exhibitions of works by artists like Dalí, Rodin, Freud, Turner, Fragonard, Hogarth or Cartier-Bresson, and is also the venue for concerts, conferences, literature and multimedia art events as well as many other activities.

PICASSO MUSEUM. Another jewel that must be visited, both because of the artist himself and the majesty of the building itself, set in Barcelona’s Gothic quarter, and comprised of five adjoining palaces which form the museum. Over 3,500 works by Pablo Ruíz Picasso, the brilliant Malaga-born artist, make up this permanent collection.

CAIXAFORUM. Ubicado en una antigua fábrica modernista, se ha convertido en uno de los centros culturales más dinámicos, activos y vivos de Barcelona. La visita al edificio, joya del patrimonio industrial de ciudad, alberga exposiciones dedicadas a artistas como Dalí, Rodin, Freud, Turner, Fragonard, Hogarth o CartierBresson, junto con conciertos, conferencias, literatura, arte multimedia y muchas otras actividades.

ACBA. Das Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst zeigt Werke aus der zweiten Hälfte des XX Jahrhunderts. In der ständigen Ausstellung gibt es weniger Werke, dafür werden um so mehr interessante Schauen gezeigt. Der USamerikanische Architekt Richard Meier entwarf das 1995 eröffnete Gebäude, wobei er gerade Linien und Kurven in einen ständigen Dialog zwischen Innenräumen und dem Außenlicht treten lässt.

CAIXAFORUM. Das Kulturzentrum in einer alten Jugendstil-Fabrik, die unter Denkmalschutz steht, gehört zu den aktivsten und dynamischsten der Stadt. Zu sehen sind unter anderem Ausstellungen von Dalí, Rodin, Freud, Turner, Fragonard, Hogarth o Cartier-Bresson. Darüber hinaus wartet das Kulturhaus mit Konzerten, Konferenzen, Literatur und Multimedia-Kunst auf.

JOAN MIRÓ FUNDATION. One of the city’s most important museums, designed by Josep Lluís Sert and endowed with a very special light and beautiful spaces.

The works of Miró bear witness to the artist’s interest in exploring and experimenting with a wide diversity of art forms, such as painting, sculpting, printing techniques, ceramics, theatre and fabrics.

ANTONI TÀPIES FUNDATION. The Antoni Tàpies Fundation was created by the Catalan painter to promote the study and understanding of Modern art and culture. In it we will find works from all the periods of Antoni Tàpies’ development. It is well worth taking a look at the rooftop terrace.

As well as those mentioned above, it is a good idea to visit other centres like the Mies Van Der Rohe Foundation, Caixa Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation, the Science Museum, the Museo Frederic Mares Museum or the Maritime Museum, among others.

And then there are the mysterious Taules, absolutely unique constructions which are still a topic of debate amongst archaeologists and experts as their purpose is unclear. The name Taules (meaning tables in Catalan) is derived from their being considered ‘giant tables’. Formed by a slab of limestone serving as a vertical base with another one placed horizontally on top, making a T shape, these constructions are found in the megalithic villages, protected by walls and other constructions.

Numerous mysteries surround the Talaiotic culture. These towering solid stones may have been defensive, for keeping watch, the houses of tribal chiefs in the Bronze Age or burial places. In Menorca, as well as being larger and

The latter is believed to have been more important because of its elevated situation, and because it has three talaiots, one taula, several houses and a room with columns inside it, as well as a water collection system. Both this one and the village of Torralba de’ n Salord and the Naveta Des Tudons, the oldest building in all of Europe, are a compulsory visit as they are the most representative buildings on the island.

Its 185 kilometres begin symbolically in the port of Mahón, although you can start from anywhere along it to circle the entire island.

The reopening of Camí de Cavalls was made possible thanks to protests by residents, who didn’t give up and managed to secure permission to pass through privately-owned land so that everyone can enjoy the wealth of scenery and heritage of a Menorca that belongs to all.

Su paso por barrancos, torrentes, valles, faros, tierras de cultivo, principales calas y playas, lo convierte en un camino muy atractivo que ha sido declarado Bien de Interés Cultural. Sus 185 kilómetros parten simbólicamente desde el Puerto de Mahón, aunque se puede iniciar desde cualquier punto con el fin de dar la vuelta entera a la isla.

La reapertura del Camí de Cavalls ha sido posible gracias a la reivindicación ciudadana, que no se ha dado por vencida y ha conseguido el permiso de paso por zonas de terreno privado, para que todo el mundo pueda acceder a la riqueza paisajística y patrimonial de una Menorca de todos.

n spite of their attractive appearance, utility and not aesthetics was the priority during their construction, with flat roofs designed to collect the rainwater that accumulated on them and drain it off into the well. The rooms were built as the family, or income, increased, which is why many of these houses look like a cluster of cubes. Their colour comes from the whitewash that protected them from the elements and the heat. The small windows protected the peasants from enemies and the thickness of the walls provided insulation against changes in temperature.

Traditional Ibizan architecture is very much a part of Sant Llorenç de Balàfia, a tiny village with fortified

The churches were constructed as fortresses and sanctuaries in case pirates attacked. The church of Santa Agnès, which has a beautiful underground chapel, is in the north of the island. A fortified church stands on the peak of Puig de Missa and Santa Eulàlia de Riu still has its 18th-century parish church. In Sant Miquel we find the only church with a Latin cross layout on the island, preceded by a large patio surrounded by arches. And the church of Sant Rafel lies between the town of Eivissa and Sant Antoni, on a cliff where one can contemplate the constructions that have inspired artists and architects for centuries.

hilst there is a certain consensus that the hippie movement began in the US city of San Francisco, the fact remains that Ibiza has been one of its most emblematic bastions, and one of those most associated with this movement which spread across the world in the ‘sixties.

On the island hippies found stimuli like contact with nature at a time when there was no mass tourism.

Naturally, the inhabitants of Ibiza were gobsmacked at first when they saw those skinny visitors arrive with their long manes of hair and equally luxuriant beards, all dressed up in brightly-coloured clothes. Despite all this, from the start they managed to coexist perfectly with the Ibizan society of the time.

Most of the hippies settled into country houses in inland Ibiza, grouped together in communes, and organised events that are still held today, like the street markets. Their arrival made the island very popular, so a steady stream of tourists from all over Europe continued to pour in. This resulted in the petering-out of the hippie essence, and Ibiza’s industry gradually focussed more and more on the growing number tourists who arrived.

However, there are still many magical, extraordinarily beautiful nooks and crannies that remain intact on Ibiza, the same ones the hippies were taken with in their day.

Flaó Flaó (Käsekuchen) PASTRY INGREDIENTS: grated lemon rind, 30 g sugar, 200 g pastry flour, 1 egg, a little salt, anisette, aniseed grains, olive oil, 25 or 30 g lard.

FILLING INGREDIENTS: 4 eggs, 250 g sugar, 500 g grated sheep’s and uncured cheese, mint.

ZUTATEN: 1kg Langusten, 1l Fischbrühe, 50g Zwiebel, 4 Paprikaschoten, Petersilie, 300g Tomaten, Fenchel, Porree, Knoblauch, Olivenöl, Salz, Pfeffer, Brandy, Seeteufel-Leber.

Important refurbishments to increase quality Importantes reformas para aumentar la calidad Umfassende Renovierung zur Verbesserung der Qualität The establishments Grupotel Alcudia Suites, Grupotel Club Menorca and Grupotel Mar de Menorca recently underwent a series of refurbishments designed to increase the quality and services they offer their guests.

Grupotel Alcudia Suites replaced all of the furniture of its apartments and studios, as well as equipping them with plasma TV. The furniture on the terrace, as well as the hall and the entrance have also been renewed.

Grupotel Club Menorca also replaced the furniture in all its apartments, and the restaurant has been redecorated, with a modern show cooking section. In addition the pool was restructured and the reception extended. There is free WI-FI throughout the hotel, as well as LED TVs in all the apartments and studios.

Finally, the Grupotel Mar de Menorca underwent full renovation of the hall, bar, restaurant and furnishings of its apartments.

Los establecimientos Grupotel Alcudia Suite, Grupotel Club Menorca y Grupotel Mar de Menorca han llevado a cabo recientemente una serie de reformas para aumentar la calidad y los servicios que ofrecen a sus clientes.

Grupotel Alcudia Suite ha reformado de manera integral todo el mobiliario de los apartamentos y estudios, además de dotarlos con TV de plasma. También se han renovado el mobiliario de la terraza, así como el hall y la entrada.

Grupotel Club Menorca también ha reformado el mobiliario de todos los apartamentos, así como el restaurante, con una nueva decoración y un moderno show cooking. También se ha remodelado la piscina y ampliado la recepción. Hay Wifi gratuito en todo el hotel, así como televisores led en todos los apartamentos y estudios.

Por último, Grupotel Mar de Menorca ha vivido una renovación total del hall, bar, restaurante y mobiliario de sus apartamentos.

Dank umfangreicher, kürzlich abgeschlossener Renovierungsarbeiten können die Hotels Grupotel Alcudia Suites, Grupotel Club Menorca und Grupotel Mar de Menorca ihren Gästen nun noch bessere Qualität und mehr Service bieten.

Im Grupotel Alcudia Suites wurde das Mobiliar in den Appartements und Studios komplett erneuert und die Zimmer mit Plasma-Fernseher ausgestattet. Es wurde ebenfalls das Mobiliar auf der Terrasse, sowie die Halle und der Eingang erneuert.

Im Grupotel Club Menorca wurden die Appartements ebenfalls mit neuen Möbeln ausgestattet. Das Restaurant wurde ebenfalls neu dekoriert und bietet ab sofort modernes Show cooking. Der Pool präsentiert sich im neuen Look, die Rezeption wurde vergrößert und sämtliche Appartements und Studios mit Led-TV ausgerüstet.

Im gesamten Hotelkomplex gibt es kostenlosen WLAN-Zugang.

Vestibül, Bar und Restaurant des Grupotel Mar de Menorca wurden komplett renoviert, die Appartements wurden neu möbliert.

SOLIDARY GRUPOTEL / GRUPOTEL SOLIDARIO Projecte Home dinner Cena de Projecte Home Galadinner von Projecte Home Over 200 friends and contributors to Projecte Home were invited to attend a solidarity dinner with the slogan “ValparaisoSolidario”. The proposal came from Miguel Ramis, of Grupotel, who has been supporting the work of Projecte Home for several years, and immediately his partners, Aina Mª Oliver, Joan Gelabert, Marta Aguiló and Bartomeu Estelrich, became involved in the project.

On this occasion, this charity event was used to launch a membership campaign amongst the dinner guests, as one-off contributions are important but periodic, long-term aid is always more effective and efficient. At the end of the dinner several guests handed in their envelopes with the completed forms to become new members.

Bajo el lema “ValparaisoSolidario” se convocaron a más de 200 amigos y colaboradores de Projecte Home a una cena solidaria.

La propuesta partió de Miguel Ramis, Consejero Delegado de Grupotel, quien desde hace años viene apoyando la labor de Projecte Home, e inmediatamente se implicaron en el proyecto sus socios: Aina Mª Oliver, Joan Gelabert, Marta Aguiló y Bartomeu Estelrich.

En esta ocasión, se aprovechó este acto benéfico para lanzar una campaña de socios entre los invitados, pues son importantes las ayudas puntuales, pero es más efectiva y eficaz si esta ayuda se hace de forma periódica y a largo plazo. Al finalizar el acto varios de los comensales fueron entregando sus sobres con los formularios cumplimentados, convirtiéndose en nuevos socios.

Mehr als 200 Freunde und Mitarbeiter des Vereins Projecte Home folgten der Einladung zum Benefiz-Galadinner, das unter dem Motto “Valparaiso Solidario” stattfand. Die Idee stammt von Miguel Ramis (CEO von Grupotel), der seit vielen Jahren die Arbeit des Vereins aktiv unterstützt. Seine Geschäftspartner Aina María Oliver, Joan Gelabert, Marta Aguiló und Bartomeu Estelrich waren von dem Vorschlag begeistert.

Projecte Home nutzte die Benefizveranstaltung, um unter den Gästen neue Mitglieder zu werben, da spontane Spenden zwar immer willkommen sind, regelmäßige Beiträge auf lange Sicht die Arbeit des Vereins aber effektiver und leichter gestalten.

Zum Abschluss des Galadinners hatten sich einige der Gäste als neue Mitglieder bei Projecte Home anwerben lassen.
