An Interview Interview Ruud Evers, projectleader ACE Hightech Systems - Eindhoven

‘At ACE you are in charge of your own career’, states project leader Ruud Evers (33). ‘If you find your work boring then you haven’t seized your opportunities.

Assertiveness is rewarded here.’ He was recently promoted from lead engineer to project leader within the hightech business unit of ACE in Eindhoven. There was a lot leading up to this. A career path starting with practice experience all the way to coaching colleagues in a technical environment.

‘Good morning.’ ‘Good morning.’ It is eight in the morning when Ruud walks into the office of ACE in Eindhoven, grabs a cup of tea and greets his colleagues. ‘We don’t do a little dance, but we just say good morning.’

And just like at any office, Ruud starts up his laptop and begins answering emails. The location where he does this changes: one day at ACE and the next on location at the client, an important supplier of high tech machines for the semiconductor industry, where Ruud works on many projects.

Ruud explains that the client develops chip machines whereby there are many steps in the development process. ‘You have to imagine that this is a giant machine that doesn’t fit in this room. Thousands of people work on this. The machine is divided into volumes. Each volume belongs to a specific department and a specific function. My team and I, for example, are responsible for gas, water and air in the machine.’ So if a module needs water, Ruud as project leader is responsible for designing a pipeline that provides water. For this, the specifications have to be taken into consideration: a certain flow, a certain pressure, a certain margin and of a course the available volume in which to construct it.

Discussing, planning and managing Back to the inbox. Here Ruud can find the issues that obstruct the client. They come from many of the departments where Ruud works on projects. The department for climate control and infrastructure, for example, wants to add a filter to a pipeline.

‘I get the question of how much time and money it takes to make the change. Since the volume in the machine is packed you have to find a way to fit the filter; this is the challenge. Based on this I make an estimate for what needs to change to make this possible. What new parts are needed, what parts of the current system need to change and what documentation needs to be provided? This creates an estimate for the number of hours required. I give that to our project manager, Joep, who turns it into an offer.’

For the department for mechanical development tools, the process works similarly. Within the volume of a subsystem, Ruud and his team are responsible for specific tools. ‘For example, the client might need an accurate, precision tool for a machine. We can design this or make changes to an existing tool.’ Once the client comes to an agreement, Ruud and his team can begin. With the actual execution he is becoming less and less involved. As project leader he is mostly concerned with discussing with the client, planning, managing, and making sure that it organizationally runs smoothly.

Social Skills The primary challenge in his role as project leader is the social skills. More than before Ruud has to put himself in others’ positions, facilitate agreement and thus call on his social skills. ‘You want to do this well, since nothing is as annoying as when someone says at the end that something isn’t possible.

Then you can start over.’ This isn’t always easy, Ruud indicates. Sometimes there are new insights or additional specifications; sometimes the client renounces part of the design so Ruud has to change his plans.

‘I sometimes find this quite frustrating.

Eventually I try to compromise because you do want to finish the assignment well. Usually I first approach the project manager or another project leader at ACE to confer about the best approach.’

Brainstorming with colleagues is something Ruud finds valuable. Especially since Ruud has not been a project leader for long and is still searching for the best balance and leadership style. ‘The approach I currently take is more directed towards formal

discussion and managing of processes. I think that I eventually need more of a coaching role, so that I motivate my team and allow them to grow. I can still grow in this aspect.’

ACE stimulates him in this development and offered him, for example, the opportunity to follow a Leadership Essential Program.

Practical experience as foundation Still, the technical side is not distant. Within the projects there is always a testing phase.

These are the moments where Ruud enters the clean room to check that the offered solution connects correctly. Contact with the practical side is important for Ruud to be able to do his job effectively. ‘By staying in contact with practical aspects I know what a client does or does not want, I can better understand the processes of the client, and I know what problems the engineers encounter.’

He already realized the importance of practical experience during his education as designer and engineer at Fontys Hogeschool in Eindhoven. He deliberately began work as a designer and engineer at a machine factory directly following his college education in order to experience as many facets of the process as possible. ‘Here I directly saw the consequence of a mistake in the drawing.

This made me more aware and I took this experience with me to my leading role.’

Chairmans preach Dear Innovum Comrades, To begin with, I hope you all enjoyed the INTRO! I would like to welcome all new members to our beloved association. I hope all of you have recovered - just a bit - from the memorable intro. WOW, what a party that was. We dominated the place! From the mosh pit at the Stadhuisplein to the splash battle on the Purple festival.

Our voice was even louder than the MC and I haven’t even mentioned the stickers. Everywhere we went we left our trademark. We partied together as a team. All of you have done a great job. But even such a fantastic week comes to an end.

Then the time has come. The first school quarter is over already. Again, Innovum provides educational support and lectures. Now it’s getting serious because the first exam week of the new school year has already passed and the hits have been taken. But of course Innovum is here to support you in these difficult and dark times. With a cup of hot coffee and a couch to relax on after the exams. This is what I so adore: we celebrate together but support each other when needed.

Still, the creativity, coming up with solutions for specific problems, is what Ruud likes about his work. With a twinkle in his eyes, he recalls the project Poka Yoke. ‘Poka Yoke means idiot proof. So Pete with his two left hands also needs to be able to connect the machine.’ Ruud explains that the client for this project went a certain direction. ‘I thought that a simpler solution was possible and came up with an idea which is now a standard solution.’ It is an example that taking initiative can result in good things. That thinking is appreciated and not forced at ACE. In this way it Works motivationally when your ideas are used, thinks Ruud. ‘I enjoy seeing my work in a project.’ And although he works less on the execution itself, he is still proud when he successfully finishes a project..

Solar Phone Charger

Introduction This article focuses on giving you interesting, practical and affordable projects that you can do at home. For this edition we present the solar phone charger, a portable set-up to charge your phone anywhere. If you do not have a solar charger or power bank, give this project a try.

The steps are very easy and you end up with a device that is really useful. We will go over the materials needed and the simple procedure.

Get your materials together and be ready to own your personal power supply.

Tools needed: - Glue Gun - 30W Soldering Iron The USB charger circuit can be from any cheap old phone or any similar that will work on your phone. In this case, it is from an old iPod. This circuit is known as a step up/ step down regulator, whose purpose is to either boost the voltage when it is underpowered or limit it when the voltage being inputted is too much. This will help a lot with the set-up we are trying to build.

“Dear Students, I was deeply moved when I read the motives of our first year students to become Engineers last month. Not money, but contributing to a better society is the motive of most of our students to become Engineers. How lucky can you be, as a dean, to contribute to the education of students with such noble motives. We are proud to welcome more than 600 new students and the 1400 students that are already studying with us. You chose to study Automotive, Electrical, Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering at Fontys. Almost 20 percent of you joined the international classes and about 20 nationalities are represented at Fontys Engineering. This is why I decided to write this article in English. My apologies to the Dutch students, but I am sure you’ll understand. We couldnt have started the academic year better, as four of our students of our international class won the Denk Groter (Think Bigger) award for their wonderful telecommunication tracking system to follow bees. Three out of ten nominees came from our institute. These students followed a new minor called Be Creative, a pilot we started this spring, to encourage students to study harder and work on the projects they are really interested in. Not only Electrical Engineering, but also Mechatronics, Automotive and Mechanical Engineering started new minor programs about robotics, smart product development with additive manufacturing and electric driving. Every year we try to improve our

program. Also, this year there will be some changes in the program, this is the outcome of the feedback we got from our students last year.

Examples are, the bootcamps that started last year at the Automotive program which are going to be introduced in other programs, the concentration of topics in one period and more transparency in the main goals of the exams. Within a few months, you will be questioned again about your thoughts on our programs. Please let us know your opinion so we can improve our program again next year. This would be greatly appreciated. I’d like to use this opportunity to thank Innovum for the wonderful introduction they organized, as well as for the drinks, interesting guest lectures, the company day in November and all the other activities Innovum organizes. A week to (never) forget!

Monday morning, fully loaded and full of enthusiasm, we stood in building R1 waiting in a long line full of guys.

Somewhere in distance you could spot a single girl. Once registered, we ended up in a chicken coop. The hunt was slowly started. Then the cycling adventure began...

After searching stickers for a long time (read: paste), it finally was time for a beer. Ofcourse everyone needed a beautiful nickname. Now the party really could get started, it was time to bind with your group. There were some wonderful exercises figured out for this ritual, the by far finest exercise was the clothing line and swimming in the Dommel. Because what gives greater pleasure than undressing yourself in front of all those charming boys and finally enter the camping site soaked. And after that, be watched by 220 boys while stuffing your mouth full of food. In the evening it was time for the dropping, pushed into a van and then being dropped in Belgium between the cows and the corn fields. We had to sleep in a tent full of testosterone and pork bellies.

The next day it was time for the water games, the bikinis and swim shorts were put on and much (physical) contacts was made. From splash bombs in the swimming pool to your feet in the children’s pool. Now it was time to prepare us for the carnival evening alaaf alaaf alaaaaaf!!!!! The necessary drinking games were played and the mood was great so the party could begin. After a few hours of sweating, sweating and more sweating the party unfortunately ended. The necessary vomit was put on the ground, and after 2 hours the toilets were free for some cozy get-together.

Villa Fiesta became our new favorite pub. Golf balls, fortune wheel, pants-of-on-your-head and yellow team you guys were great! A lot of shots further down the line, it was time to return to the student sport center. For some of us this was an adventure on itself, full of pee breaks and talking statues. After the daily morning ritual, everybody was full of ‘een-en-al-blijheid’(annoying song). Now it was time for the Purplefestival. After all the girls were soaking wet by the water and all the DJ’s having lost their pants, the hips came loose, shirts were ripped open, alcohol was just like water and water was just like alcohol.

Completely filled with booze and trying to find the way to Sotratum while you do not know what your front is or your behind was a small obstacle. After all it was a successful week with our sweet Mommies and though (pantless) Daddies. Hopefully this generation will survive so next year will be just as much fun.

I have always been fascinated by the idea of seeing the technology environment and meeting the people who are part of the whole engineering process. Meeting the people working at these great companies and seeing in real life the things that the industry has to offer. What better way can you think of than to visit an event like the World of Technology and Science (WoTS) in Utrecht? It was a great life experience to be there talking with the people, asking questions about the subjects I am interested in and seeing the latest tech I always wanted to see. This is the place where I was given the opportunity to see how everything works for real. Everything I wanted to know about a certain company or a product was explained in details and I obtained more knowledge regarding the whole development and production process, in short, the way everything works. Furthermore we discussed the possibilities of working for these companies (such as internships). Several of them were already known to me, like National Instruments for example, but there were also many others. Many of them I had never heard of before and that’s why this was a very useful experience.

There were companies from every engineering sector. Not only did each one have a different way of advertising themselves and their products, but they also had distinct ways of demonstrating and explaining their designs. Personally, the most interesting part of the WoTS was the electronic sector since it is what I study. One of the exhibitions that fascinated me were those developed by the big PCB design companies. It was great listening to the people explaining their work and the way these organizations function. There were many new developments in technology shown that I had never seen before and it was quite educational to undergo this experience, and I now feel even more involved in the technological world. WoTS was a place where you can meet new people who share the same interests as you. You can freely talk with people and have discussions about many different topics. Even though the event took place in the heart of the Netherlands, almost everything was also in English and at some displays even in German. The only thing that I was a little disappointed in was the fact that the seminars and presentations were all performed in Dutch. This meant that students like us, were not able to understand them, but still – it is a Dutch event so it is quite normal for this to happen. I have many things from the fair which were given for free as a kind of advertising from the companies. Most of these trinkets are very useful and interesting, there were even applications I had never seen before. For example, there was the company “Metric control” which creates measuring equipment and they also do a lot of measuring activities themselves. I received an “ice cube” from them. This thing is a little cube that has a circuit inside which includes an LED to produce light. But this was not the detail that interested me most; the cube can be used as a real cooling instrument, it can be put in the freezer and then used as a real ice cube. The company also gave away measuring tapes with their logo on it. The World of technology and science in Utrecht turned out to be a really educational event which offers great opportunities for the people interested in these industries. It provided very useful information, lots of knowledge and many great memories.

Technical newsflash What has been developed?

Robot baby The researchers at UC San Diego have built the aforementioned terrifying-as-hell baby robot and programmed it to make humans smile as part of their investigation on the question of why babies and mothers smile. Can you believe it? Smile - not kill and terrify.

The route of lights Practical information of the route of lights The route of lights is a festival to celebrate the liberation of Eindhoven from world war 2. It is celebrated every year during autumn, specifically in the time period of 18 September till the 2nd Sunday of October. It is organized by the lichtjesroute foundation, situated in Eindhoven. The organization consist purely of volunteers who help plan the route of lights. The route is 26 kilometers long and is split up into multiple sections.

Pizza delivery robots The self-driving hamper-style bots have six wheels, an antenna sticking out of it and can operate within a 4 or 5 kilometer radius to deliver parcels, groceries and takeaways in 15 to 30 minutes. When customers place an order, they are be able to track their robot on their phone as it travels to them.

What I experienced on the route of lights

Real-life Transformers The Transformers are apparently already a thing in the Turkish company called Letvision. They can turn their heads from side to side and move their arms and fingers and, erm, shoot smoke from between their legs. The whole thing is a 2013 BMW which is changing to an upright robot bit.

To learn more about the city of Eindhoven, me and a few friends decided to walk on the route of lights on Sunday, 9th of October.

The route started in the city and continued to parts of the city we’ve never been before, we went to a field next to the old Philips factory. It was really dark and creepy and it felt like we were going to get kidnapped. Thankfully, we did not and we carried on to a lake with lights in it (See Figure 1). We continued following the route to Woensel and ended up in the City centre again.

Since we went on the last day, we met some of the people who organized the event. They were counting the number of people that were going to the city but sadly, I don’t remember the number of people. They also had a stand selling pea soup which is a traditional Dutch soup; in addition to some other stuff like lights and water for on the road, but none of us had cash so we bought some ice cream instead.

Table football robot Under the foosball table a camera is tracking the movement of the ball across it by taking 300 pictures per second . This information is then relayed to a computer for processing before commands are sent to the motorized arms, which are precise to less than a millimeter and can generate up to 9g of acceleration.

A drone with robotic hands The large format Prodrome PD6B-AW-ARM has a maximum payload of 20 kilograms and a pair of 5-axis robotic arms, equipped with a variety of motions and tilts that can lift up to 10 kilograms. With the ability to fly for 30 minutes at a time, this drone can carry dangerous materials or transport cargo to remote locations.

Innovations in design

The Dutch Design Week is a week where entrepreneurs, companies and universities receive the opportunity to display their innovations for the public to see and for the public to get a chance to have a look at all of these innovations. All in all it is a great opportunity to get an insight of what is currently being developed and which problems are being tackled. In this article I will be showing you my highlights of the DDW innovations which were displayed at the klokgebouw in Eindhoven.

I will start off with the tech innovations.

Somnox A sleeping robot created for those who are sleep deprived. Approximately 44% of the Dutch population has trouble sleeping according to the company’s promo video. The idea is to spoon this robotic pillow while it “breathes”. The artificial breathing should then help you fall asleep easily and experience a deeper sleep, no medication needed!

3D Concrete Printing We’ve all heard of 3D printing which has been a topic of discussion in recent years, but I have yet to hear of 3D concrete printing! The idea is super cool and I can’t wait to see the projects which will use this technique.

AWE Goosebumps A bio-responsive animatronic “skin” that amplifies the feeling of goosebumps and animates awe.

This innovation took me by surprise. At first I thought it was some LED’s on a textile, but it is actually biometric material used to measure physical characteristics, like goosebumps, and inflates illuminative silicone balls underneath the textile to display what the wearer is feeling.

Natasha Latham has the word I. Introduction Dear reader, welcome, welcome! I would like to tell you a little bit about what it is like being an international member at Innovum. Some would whisper, you aren’t international, you’re actually Dutch. This much is true. I am a 4th year Electrical Engineering student at Fontys from Aruba and I have a Dutch nationality, but I wasn’t born here so I am considered international. I have been a member of Innovum since 2013, where I formed part of the International committee, we attempted to organize company visits with little luck. I then decided to leave Innovum during my second year to focus on my studies and rejoined at the end of my 3rd year in 2016 and am now part of the design committee.

II. Benefits By rejoining Innovum I gained the opportunity to meet and interact with Dutch students which is a rare occurrence for me personally. Together with other international students we go to excursions and events together, and we always have a great time. Everyone knows the struggles of the student life and knows how to have fun!

Aside from events, being in a committee allowed me to have a voice in the management of the committee. You will be listened to when you share your ideas during the meetings and given feedback.

It’s great practice for meetings in the future.

Lastly, I really enjoy the ability to purchase components for personal use at RS-online and the Fontys store room. It allows me to practice my engineering skills at a lower cost than if I were to purchase the components on my own from commercial sites. No shopping costs!

III. Conclusion In conclusion, being an active member for me means a pleasant social experience while practicing my meeting and engineering skills in a team of fun students.

Bioplastic Bioplastic made out of cellulose fiber. By adding specific bacteria, they can convert the fibers into sugars and lactic acid. They then extract PHA or PLA from them, which is one of the components to make plastic. This method could replace the current methods which use crude oil. Save the planet! #thenewvase The new vase is a project which combines the pictorial representations on Greek vases and merges it with what’s hip and cool nowadays.

Some emojis here, pusheen the cat there and a sparkle of snapchat filter and there you have it! An amusing and artistic project. There are more pieces to the project which can be found online when you look up #thenewvase.

Conclusion There were, of course, many more innovations which were on display, but it is difficult to fit them all in one article! I hope you enjoyed the few that did make the cut and I would highly recommend attending the next Dutch Design Week if you haven’t yet. This was my first experience and it will most certainly not be my last.

Beercycling Don’t fall off!

START UP As is customary, at the beginning of every school year, Innovum hosts a beercycling event for all of the engineering students. This year was a little more special because there were 4 beercycles! So much beer, so little time. Some designated drivers came with their own tunes and made it an excellent start of the evening.

HIGHLIGHTS The evening began a bit shaky, with one of cycles having a defect steering wheel, but we quickly recovered and began our journey from Fontys to the unknown! Heads turn as we cycle on the bike path with our loud music and enthusiastic atmosphere. You didn’t have to worry about running out of beer, because the bar tenders were quick to refill your cup as soon as it came close to being empty. That’s what I call excellent service, boys!

There was a point during it all where everyone started, what I like to call, “beercycle hopping”. It was entertaining to watch many attempt to hop onto the fastest cycle or hopping onto different cycles to get a chance to interact with everyone. It was great!

Apparently it was a really hot day because for no good reason all the guys decided to put off their shirts. Or they just need to get more exercise because the cyclin seemed to be a little too hard for most of them. After an hour everyone was only standing on the beercycle and party instead of the real cycling.

Entering the Dutch life Being an international student staying in a place where everything is completely foreign is an exhilarating experience. Especially for some people who now live thousands of kilometer away from home, indulging into new sorts of activities which are strangely fun. Experiencing these new things together with peers will turn these moments into some remarkable memories.

Structure wise the Netherlands is very well organized, compared to my home country Indonesia.

Bicycles and the public transport system are very well maintained and organized . Buildings are well structured and maintained according to their standards. Even so, diversity is shown widely on certain places due to the influence of the massive globalization. Though they manage to maintain the originality of the Dutch Culture.

A simple overall conclusion from the Netherlands is that you do not only meet the Dutch, but people from all around the world. The term that best describes the Netherlands is “Meeting Point”, As in it is the place where people all around the world gather either to study or just to have fun. It is proven that the people in the Netherlands are widely ranged, from all over the continents. Not only will you learn the important things about the Dutch, but you also learn other things from your colleagues’ home country aswell. It is a perfect place to be when you’re aiming to indulge in a lot of new different cultures while keeping the originality of the dutch culture.

ENDING Nearing the end of the event, we made our last pit stop at the Central station in Eindhoven. While arriving there, one brave driver decided to attempt a daring act. They attempted to pass the beercycle under the bike path tunnel which is next to the station.

To their surprise, the beercycle did not fit, but fortunately, it was stopped before any damage was done. Once at the station, the girls (and Stef) used this opportunity to use the restroom again at the station and were left behind in the process! We managed to catch up again to conclude the event at Fontys.

In conclusion, it was an awesome evening relaxing and socializing with fellow students.

Great memories were made and we hope to see you at the next Beercycle event for more fun and, of course, lots of beer!

Technical newsflash What has been developed?

Robot baby The researchers at UC San Diego have built the aforementioned terrifying-as-hell baby robot and programmed it to make humans smile as part of their investigation on the question of why babies and mothers smile. Can you believe it? Smile - not kill and terrify.

The route of lights Practical information of the route of lights The route of lights is a festival to celebrate the liberation of Eindhoven from world war 2. It is celebrated every year during autumn, specifically in the time period of 18 September till the 2nd Sunday of October. It is organized by the lichtjesroute foundation, situated in Eindhoven. The organization consist purely of volunteers who help plan the route of lights. The route is 26 kilometers long and is split up into multiple sections.

Pizza delivery robots The self-driving hamper-style bots have six wheels, an antenna sticking out of it and can operate within a 4 or 5 kilometer radius to deliver parcels, groceries and takeaways in 15 to 30 minutes. When customers place an order, they are be able to track their robot on their phone as it travels to them.

What I experienced on the route of lights

Real-life Transformers The Transformers are apparently already a thing in the Turkish company called Letvision. They can turn their heads from side to side and move their arms and fingers and, erm, shoot smoke from between their legs. The whole thing is a 2013 BMW which is changing to an upright robot bit.

To learn more about the city of Eindhoven, me and a few friends decided to walk on the route of lights on Sunday, 9th of October.

The route started in the city and continued to parts of the city we’ve never been before, we went to a field next to the old Philips factory. It was really dark and creepy and it felt like we were going to get kidnapped. Thankfully, we did not and we carried on to a lake with lights in it (See Figure 1). We continued following the route to Woensel and ended up in the City centre again.

Since we went on the last day, we met some of the people who organized the event. They were counting the number of people that were going to the city but sadly, I don’t remember the number of people. They also had a stand selling pea soup which is a traditional Dutch soup; in addition to some other stuff like lights and water for on the road, but none of us had cash so we bought some ice cream instead.

This information is then relayed to a computer for processing before commands are sent to the motorized arms, which are precise to less than a millimeter and can generate up to 9g of acceleration.

A drone with robotic hands The large format Prodrome PD6B-AW-ARM has a maximum payload of 20 kilograms and a pair of 5-axis robotic arms, equipped with a variety of motions and tilts that can lift up to 10 kilograms. With the ability to fly for 30 minutes at a time, this drone can carry dangerous materials or transport cargo to remote locations.

I have always been fascinated by the idea of seeing the technology environment and meeting the people who are part of the whole engineering process. Meeting the people working at these great companies and seeing in real life the things that the industry has to offer. What better way can you think of than to visit an event like the World of Technology and Science (WoTS) in Utrecht? It was a great life experience to be there talking with the people, asking questions about the subjects I am interested in and seeing the latest tech I always wanted to see. This is the place where I was given the opportunity to see how everything works for real. Everything I wanted to know about a certain company or a product was explained in details and I obtained more knowledge regarding the whole development and production process, in short, the way everything works. Furthermore we discussed the possibilities of working for these companies (such as internships). Several of them were already known to me, like National Instruments for example, but there were also many others. Many of them I had never heard of before and that’s why this was a very useful experience.

There were companies from every engineering sector. Not only did each one have a different way of advertising themselves and their products, but they also had distinct ways of demonstrating and explaining their designs. Personally, the most interesting part of the WoTS was the electronic sector since it is what I study. One of the exhibitions that fascinated me were those developed by the big PCB design companies. It was great listening to the people explaining their work and the way these organizations function. There were many new developments in technology shown that I had never seen before and it was quite educational to undergo this experience, and I now feel even more involved in the technological world. WoTS was a place where you can meet new people who share the same interests as you. You can freely talk with people and have discussions about many different topics. Even though the event took place in the heart of the Netherlands, almost everything was also in English and at some displays even in German. The only thing that I was a little disappointed in was the fact that the seminars and presentations were all performed in Dutch. This meant that students like us, were not able to understand them, but still – it is a Dutch event so it is quite normal for this to happen. I have many things from the fair which were given for free as a kind of advertising from the companies. Most of these trinkets are very useful and interesting, there were even applications I had never seen before. For example, there was the company “Metric control” which creates measuring equipment and they also do a lot of measuring activities themselves. I received an “ice cube” from them. This thing is a little cube that has a circuit inside which includes an LED to produce light. But this was not the detail that interested me most; the cube can be used as a real cooling instrument, it can be put in the freezer and then used as a real ice cube. The company also gave away measuring tapes with their logo on it. The World of technology and science in Utrecht turned out to be a really educational event which offers great opportunities for the people interested in these industries. It provided very useful information, lots of knowledge and many great memories.

Did-You-Know ...

A week to (never) forget!

Monday morning, fully loaded and full of enthusiasm, we stood in building R1 waiting in a long line full of guys.

Somewhere in distance you could spot a single girl. Once registered, we ended up in a chicken coop. The hunt was slowly started. Then the cycling adventure began...

After searching stickers for a long time (read: paste), it finally was time for a beer. Ofcourse everyone needed a beautiful nickname. Now the party really could get started, it was time to bind with your group. There were some wonderful exercises figured out for this ritual, the by far finest exercise was the clothing line and swimming in the Dommel. Because what gives greater pleasure than undressing yourself in front of all those charming boys and finally enter the camping site soaked. And after that, be watched by 220 boys while stuffing your mouth full of food. In the evening it was time for the dropping, pushed into a van and then being dropped in Belgium between the cows and the corn fields. We had to sleep in a tent full of testosterone and pork bellies.

The next day it was time for the water games, the bikinis and swim shorts were put on and much (physical) contacts was made. From splash bombs in the swimming pool to your feet in the children’s pool. Now it was time to prepare us for the carnival evening alaaf alaaf alaaaaaf!!!!! The necessary drinking games were played and the mood was great so the party could begin. After a few hours of sweating, sweating and more sweating the party unfortunately ended. The necessary vomit was put on the ground, and after 2 hours the toilets were free for some cozy get-together.

Villa Fiesta became our new favorite pub. Golf balls, fortune wheel, pants-of-on-your-head and yellow team you guys were great! A lot of shots further down the line, it was time to return to the student sport center. For some of us this was an adventure on itself, full of pee breaks and talking statues. After the daily morning ritual, everybody was full of ‘een-en-al-blijheid’(annoying song). Now it was time for the Purplefestival. After all the girls were soaking wet by the water and all the DJ’s having lost their pants, the hips came loose, shirts were ripped open, alcohol was just like water and water was just like alcohol.

Completely filled with booze and trying to find the way to Sotratum while you do not know what your front is or your behind was a small obstacle. After all it was a successful week with our sweet Mommies and though (pantless) Daddies. Hopefully this generation will survive so next year will be just as much fun.

Solar Phone Charger

Introduction This article focuses on giving you interesting, practical and affordable projects that you can do at home. For this edition we present the solar phone charger, a portable set-up to charge your phone anywhere. If you do not have a solar charger or power bank, give this project a try.

The steps are very easy and you end up with a device that is really useful. We will go over the materials needed and the simple procedure.

Get your materials together and be ready to own your personal power supply.

Tools needed: - Glue Gun - 30W Soldering Iron The USB charger circuit can be from any cheap old phone or any similar that will work on your phone. In this case, it is from an old iPod. This circuit is known as a step up/ step down regulator, whose purpose is to either boost the voltage when it is underpowered or limit it when the voltage being inputted is too much. This will help a lot with the set-up we are trying to build.

“Dear Students, I was deeply moved when I read the motives of our first year students to become Engineers last month. Not money, but contributing to a better society is the motive of most of our students to become Engineers. How lucky can you be, as a dean, to contribute to the education of students with such noble motives. We are proud to welcome more than 600 new students and the 1400 students that are already studying with us. You chose to study Automotive, Electrical, Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering at Fontys. Almost 20 percent of you joined the international classes and about 20 nationalities are represented at Fontys Engineering. This is why I decided to write this article in English. My apologies to the Dutch students, but I am sure you’ll understand. We couldnt have started the academic year better, as four of our students of our international class won the Denk Groter (Think Bigger) award for their wonderful telecommunication tracking system to follow bees. Three out of ten nominees came from our institute. These students followed a new minor called Be Creative, a pilot we started this spring, to encourage students to study harder and work on the projects they are really interested in. Not only Electrical Engineering, but also Mechatronics, Automotive and Mechanical Engineering started new minor programs about robotics, smart product development with additive manufacturing and electric driving. Every year we try to improve our

program. Also, this year there will be some changes in the program, this is the outcome of the feedback we got from our students last year.

Examples are, the bootcamps that started last year at the Automotive program which are going to be introduced in other programs, the concentration of topics in one period and more transparency in the main goals of the exams. Within a few months, you will be questioned again about your thoughts on our programs. Please let us know your opinion so we can improve our program again next year. This would be greatly appreciated. I’d like to use this opportunity to thank Innovum for the wonderful introduction they organized, as well as for the drinks, interesting guest lectures, the company day in November and all the other activities Innovum organizes. ACE

An Interview Interview Ruud Evers, projectleader ACE Hightech Systems - Eindhoven

‘At ACE you are in charge of your own career’, states project leader Ruud Evers (33). ‘If you find your work boring then you haven’t seized your opportunities.

Assertiveness is rewarded here.’ He was recently promoted from lead engineer to project leader within the hightech business unit of ACE in Eindhoven. There was a lot leading up to this. A career path starting with practice experience all the way to coaching colleagues in a technical environment.

‘Good morning.’ ‘Good morning.’ It is eight in the morning when Ruud walks into the office of ACE in Eindhoven, grabs a cup of tea and greets his colleagues. ‘We don’t do a little dance, but we just say good morning.’

And just like at any office, Ruud starts up his laptop and begins answering emails. The location where he does this changes: one day at ACE and the next on location at the client, an important supplier of high tech machines for the semiconductor industry, where Ruud works on many projects.

Ruud explains that the client develops chip machines whereby there are many steps in the development process. ‘You have to imagine that this is a giant machine that doesn’t fit in this room. Thousands of people work on this. The machine is divided into volumes. Each volume belongs to a specific department and a specific function. My team and I, for example, are responsible for gas, water and air in the machine.’ So if a module needs water, Ruud as project leader is responsible for designing a pipeline that provides water. For this, the specifications have to be taken into consideration: a certain flow, a certain pressure, a certain margin and of a course the available volume in which to construct it.

Discussing, planning and managing Back to the inbox. Here Ruud can find the issues that obstruct the client. They come from many of the departments where Ruud works on projects. The department for climate control and infrastructure, for example, wants to add a filter to a pipeline.

‘I get the question of how much time and money it takes to make the change. Since the volume in the machine is packed you have to find a way to fit the filter; this is the challenge. Based on this I make an estimate for what needs to change to make this possible. What new parts are needed, what parts of the current system need to change and what documentation needs to be provided? This creates an estimate for the number of hours required. I give that to our project manager, Joep, who turns it into an offer.’

For the department for mechanical development tools, the process works similarly. Within the volume of a subsystem, Ruud and his team are responsible for specific tools. ‘For example, the client might need an accurate, precision tool for a machine. We can design this or make changes to an existing tool.’ Once the client comes to an agreement, Ruud and his team can begin. With the actual execution he is becoming less and less involved. As project leader he is mostly concerned with discussing with the client, planning, managing, and making sure that it organizationally runs smoothly.

Social Skills The primary challenge in his role as project leader is the social skills. More than before Ruud has to put himself in others’ positions, facilitate agreement and thus call on his social skills. ‘You want to do this well, since nothing is as annoying as when someone says at the end that something isn’t possible.

Then you can start over.’ This isn’t always easy, Ruud indicates. Sometimes there are new insights or additional specifications; sometimes the client renounces part of the design so Ruud has to change his plans.

‘I sometimes find this quite frustrating.

Eventually I try to compromise because you do want to finish the assignment well. Usually I first approach the project manager or another project leader at ACE to confer about the best approach.’

Brainstorming with colleagues is something Ruud finds valuable. Especially since Ruud has not been a project leader for long and is still searching for the best balance and leadership style. ‘The approach I currently take is more directed towards formal

discussion and managing of processes. I think that I eventually need more of a coaching role, so that I motivate my team and allow them to grow. I can still grow in this aspect.’

ACE stimulates him in this development and offered him, for example, the opportunity to follow a Leadership Essential Program.

Practical experience as foundation Still, the technical side is not distant. Within the projects there is always a testing phase.

These are the moments where Ruud enters the clean room to check that the offered solution connects correctly. Contact with the practical side is important for Ruud to be able to do his job effectively. ‘By staying in contact with practical aspects I know what a client does or does not want, I can better understand the processes of the client, and I know what problems the engineers encounter.’

He already realized the importance of practical experience during his education as designer and engineer at Fontys Hogeschool in Eindhoven. He deliberately began work as a designer and engineer at a machine factory directly following his college education in order to experience as many facets of the process as possible. ‘Here I directly saw the consequence of a mistake in the drawing.

This made me more aware and I took this experience with me to my leading role.’

Chairmans preach Dear Innovum Comrades, To begin with, I hope you all enjoyed the INTRO! I would like to welcome all new members to our beloved association. I hope all of you have recovered - just a bit - from the memorable intro. WOW, what a party that was. We dominated the place! From the mosh pit at the Stadhuisplein to the splash battle on the Purple festival.

Our voice was even louder than the MC and I haven’t even mentioned the stickers. Everywhere we went we left our trademark. We partied together as a team. All of you have done a great job. But even such a fantastic week comes to an end.

Then the time has come. The first school quarter is over already. Again, Innovum provides educational support and lectures. Now it’s getting serious because the first exam week of the new school year has already passed and the hits have been taken. But of course Innovum is here to support you in these difficult and dark times. With a cup of hot coffee and a couch to relax on after the exams. This is what I so adore: we celebrate together but support each other when needed.

Still, the creativity, coming up with solutions for specific problems, is what Ruud likes about his work. With a twinkle in his eyes, he recalls the project Poka Yoke. ‘Poka Yoke means idiot proof. So Pete with his two left hands also needs to be able to connect the machine.’ Ruud explains that the client for this project went a certain direction. ‘I thought that a simpler solution was possible and came up with an idea which is now a standard solution.’ It is an example that taking initiative can result in good things. That thinking is appreciated and not forced at ACE. In this way it Works motivationally when your ideas are used, thinks Ruud. ‘I enjoy seeing my work in a project.’ And although he works less on the execution itself, he is still proud when he successfully finishes a project..

‘At ACE I feel valued.’
