The day after CoBo

Well it was that time of the year again, the constitution drink. The celebration for the new board, which means, lots of beer and shots, a lot of shots and a lot of nasty shots. To say I survived…. Well I am alive am I not? Otherwi se I wouldn’t be writing this. Lets start at the beginning.

Tuesday the 22 of march was a day that started with the well known board meeting, which was pretty boring. We as the board ordered lots of food, Gijs kept telling me to either eat more or drink more, I kept telling him : “I am tiny I can’t eat any more I am full”. An answer he didn’t settle for Sadly. After the meeting, we left school to buy some groceries to get a good layer of food in. With the idea that we wouldn’t immediately die when we had three shots. Well, the clock ticked 18.30 which meant we had to go to the Bartenders. Arriving there was chilling, we realized we forgot to bring buckets, so we quickly send two of our careta kers to the Gamma to buy us five buckets. While they were gone, we had to start our CoBo which star ted of with our well known blikje blaffen together with the previous board.

So it begun, an evening where I remember almost everything until 23.00. At that point, Stephanie (treasurer) came to me, saying: “Anouk, Anouk, Anouk, it is 23pm we don’t have to take any more shots, we are done!”. I simply nodded, looked at the rest of my board and well after that I don’t remember anything. Apparently I vomited once, right before I had to leave, can’t remember that. I couldn’t even tell my caretaker which jacket was mine. So, the next morning arrives and well I woke up fine. My caretaker made me some egg and toast (thanks Elsie) and I went on my merry way to school. I woke up a little late so I was there around 8.15am, whoopsy.

All said and done, I was fine until at some point we ordered McDonald’s. It was at that time I realized: I am dead. The headache

started, I became light in my head, I became nauseous and I had sto mach pain. Well, let’s say that was my first hangover ever and I was ruined for the day. The whole day I felt bad, I slept through at least 2 movies of the 7 that we watched. The prospect of food didn’t even appeal to me, all I could think was: ‘Shoot me and I will be fine with it.’ My day started at 8 and by the time I went home it was at least 19. The ride home was an hour, in which I also wanted to die, since the person next to me was making fun of me the entire time. So, coming home meant, eat the food given, prepare a bath and go lay in said bath for the foreseeable future. At that point I started to feel better.

Is a CoBo something I recom mend? Definitely, I had lots of fun that evening. Do I recommend the day after? Definitely not. Don’t be a fool like me and take all 30 shots, just take 10 and fake the rest, you will thank me later.

Ella Hueting, from Fontys

Dear students,

How wonderful it is that we can leave the Corona period behind us and come back to our buildings to attend classes. Our buildings are buzzing: everywhere you see students working on lessons, labs and projects. I can also see my colleagues brightening up again. Everyone is cheerful. I think it’s great what Innovum is doing to make up for the damage done in the past two years: get-togethers, parties, company days, etc. At the same time, I have great admiration for how the two previous boards of directors got through the Corona period. Within the possibilities that were available, they did everything they could to support students with digital activities and homework help. They also helped the management team enormously by constantly giving us advice and helping with communication with students. Hats off!

A few success stories from the past period: the Innovum companies day, Meet &Match in the Evoluon, the NXP cup, the Hack2Impact hackathon, the unveiling of our solar car on the Automotive Campus, the drone challenge together with Summa, the Hovercraft race, the inspiration session with Vice President Peter Seeger of Philips, and last but not least: the award for the best higher education in the Netherlands for our Pulsed group (of Empower Tech and the minor Embrace TEC, among others). And undoubtedly, I have forgotten a lot of interesting projects. Let me know if you do something interesting, participate in a challenge or have won a prize.

Last February, we started the Digital Technology Engineering pilot with a few students, which starts again in September. And for the students who are graduating this semester: the Master in System Design will also start in September.

With all these successes, rising student numbers and increasing research, we also need new teachers. Please spread the word to your friends, family and companies where you work. Anyone who would like to join us, preferably with a technical background, please contact me. In this way, we will be able to provide good educa tion again next year.

Good luck with the last bits of this year!

Kind regards, Ella Hueting

Study Trip

After two years, the study trip finally took place again. Going to the beauti ful countries of Slovakia and Slove nia, with a small stop in Austria.

Sunday May 1st at 2:00 in the morn ing, our sleepy heads came together to pack the busses with our bags, beer, soda, beer, water, beer, beer, and beer, and not forgetting our suits. The 16-hour drive started from Eindho ven, then went through Germany and Czech Republic, to arrive in Slovakia at 20:00. Bus 4 did have some pro blems going through the mountains because when they tried to a 100km/ hour, they dropped down to 40km/ hour and going as a snail across the mountains. Everyone was sleeping, singing, drinking, playing games or partying in the bus. Arriving at the hostel, the busses could not park in the city, so we had to get out and the drivers had to find new parking spots. Everyone rushed to a room to find a bed, when everyone was settled in, we went to a restaurant and had a delicious dinner. The bellies were full, singing “We are the engineer” we arrived back at the hostel and kept drinking in the common room or fell dead asleep in the bed.

they operate in this company. Giving them some wine and stroopwafel for their appreciation of hosting us. After the tour, we got back in the bus, opened a beer and travelled to a mall were everyone got some KFC. After having some amazing chicken, we drove back to the hostel. After parking the busses, we walked to the other side of the bridge and found a great place to have some nice refres hing cocktails. At 20:00 we went to a Slovakian restaurant and got to taste some traditional dishes. Afterwards, we went to the ‘Joep Jesus’ by going to bars and having a drink. Since there were still corona rules, the bars closed at midnight, so the party went on in the common room at the hostels.

some of us went on a search for ice cream. At 21:00 we met up again to get a spooky tour of the city where the scary stories of the town were told and Anouk got frightened by Boaz. After the spooky tour, the party went on in a ???? club.

6:30 the alarms went off, everyone suited up and got a great breakfast from Lidl, and after that we went to KOKS group, the first company visit. The group was split into two, one group got a tour of the company, and the second group went to a beautiful lake and tried to skip stones. Around lunch time, the groups switched. First, a presentation was given about the company KOKS group, after an interesting presentation, we got to see the machines they make and how

The next morning the alarms went of at 6:30 again because the next com pany visit was planned. Everybody jumped back into their suits and we drove of to Heneken Group. Here we had a presentation of the company about how they turn aluminium into conductors. After the presentation, a tour was given through the factory where the group was split into two because of all the noise. A thorough vision was created on how the ma chines made the aluminium cords and how these cords were twisted together to make the conductors after seeing the whole factory, they recieved a nice bottle of wine and stroopwafels as a thank you for the tour. Everyone jumped back into the sauna busses and got a beer, in bus 9 a fun drinking game was played where one by one the suits were taken of. Back at the hostel the bag was being packed and most of us took a nap to be ready for the night. For dinner, we went to an Italian restaurant where we got pizza (but Laura found the crust of the pizza too soft) afterwards,

Wednesday, after the bags were piled up in the busses, we drove off to Vienna to get a nice Wikipedia tour from Niek (where he lost his voice) and saw all the beautiful spots in the city. After the tour, the group got split and every group went to do their own thing in the city, either getting some lunch, shopping or site seeing. We all came together at 15:00 to get back into the busses to drive to Slovenia. Sanne Bosma though it was a great idea to buy twister and play in the bus while driving. Playing games, and drinking, we got held up after the boarder of Slovenia because they were cleaning the tunnels. Finally arrived we all rushed to the Mexican restaurant before closing and got a delicious meal. After dinner, we got new rooms in the hostel and went straight to bed.

On Thursday we all woke up because of the loud and annoying bells that went off for 5 minutes, every twenty minutes, but we had our last compa ny tour at Renault auto factory. Here we got a presentation about how the company started up and their best

car brash is. Afterwards, we walked around the company where we saw a car being built from scratch and how all the machines work together to assemble the whole car. After the tour, we got some coffee and pastries and had some time to ask questions. Giving them some wine and stroop wafels (Niek and Rik nothing will be said), we got back into the busses and went off to the city. Getting changed in the busses, we got dropped in the city to have a nice picknick in the park or to a restaurant to have some lunch. When our bellies were full, we walked through the city and a few of us walked up a big hill to see a beau tiful castle and the view of the whole city at the bottom. After a nice time in the city, we went back to the hostel where we got some dinner at another Italian place. Around 22:00 we were brought to a bar, the only bar close by that was open till 3 in the morning. Giving a great applause to the barten der that was alone making cocktails for the 27 of us. At 3, everyone was dead tired and sound asleep in their beds.

walk on the side of the raft without falling, we had a blast going down the river. At the end, everyone was free zing and trying to be the first person in the showers to warm up. We got some lunch and went on to the next attraction where we walked down next to a waterfall and saw a beautiful river. Before getting to the waterfall, bus 4 would not start and we had to find the break wire to reanimate the bus. After the hike, we went to a lake where there was a castle in the middle of the lake. By that time, our feet were sore, so we took a small walk around the lake and left to have some dinner. At this restaurant, we got a nice soup and the best schnitzel from Slovenia, we also got a sort of apple pie for desert as a surprise and a Slovenian drink. Getting back to the hostel, we went on playing the drinking game but after a while half of us were falling asleep, so we went to bed. The other half went outside and partied on.

hoven around midnight, everyone got their bag, the group did one last ‘blik je blaffen’ (not in the bus this time) and we went off to our nice warm and cosy beds.

The week was filled with singing, drinking, playing games, drinking, laughing, company visits, drinking, city tours, drinking, drinking, and sleeping. In the end I would sign myself up right now to join the study trip for next year already because it is an experience you will never forget.

We got to sleep in for the first time this week but were still woken up by the stupid bells next to the hostel. Around 10:00 we finally heard the surprise that we were waiting on all week, we went rafting down the river. Because of the 15 degrees weather, we all got a wet suit, life jacket, water shoes, and helmet to protect us from the freezing cold water. As raft two was passing raft one, we all got soaked and went and combined our forces to get everyone wet in raft 3. At some stops we got to jump in the water, try to flip the raft over or try to

Saturday arrived, the day we tra velled back to the Netherlands. The annoying bells went off again at a random time, but we were all awake and ready to travel back home. By 8:00 all the bags were pack and loa ded in the busses. The first few hours traveling through Austria, everyone was sleeping. After a while, we were awake and ready to sing along for the next few hours. Being held up at the boarder of Germany (a small setback) we were racing through Germany hoping that one of the busses will not stop on the middle of the hill when going up. Around lunch time, we stopped and had some bread. After the short break we were back on the road. Screaming our lungs out with “Pizza met Ananas” or “Olaf” we got safe and sound at McDonald’s where they got overwhelmed with an order for 27 people. For the last part of the bus ride everyone was watching formula one (because apparently that is important to watch). After a long drive we finally arrived back in Eind

Team Rembrandts

My name is Sterre, I’m 18 years old and I study mechatronics. When I was in my third year of high school, I joined team Rem brandts. I decided to join this robotics team because I wanted to do more with technique outside of school and meet new people.

Team Rembrandts is a large group of people, mostly students, that builds a robot every year to par ticipate in a big tournament. This tournament is organised by a community called FIRST. During this tournament, hundreds of ro botics teams compete against each other to eventually become the world champion of the season! To win the match, each team receives the rules of the game six weeks in advance and designs a robot, after the design is final, the building season begins!

This years building season was a lot of fun for me because I was able to contribute a lot and help with almost everything. I contri buted by designing things for the robot, helped with electrical and programmed. the thing that I wor ked on the most is making sure the robot is able to climb because in the end, when the time is up, the robot must climb to the top for extra credit.

After the building season was done, we flew with a large group to Florida, USA to participate at the regionals. We participated in two regionals, we won the first one and made it till the semi-finals at the second one. During the regi onals I joined the pit crew, here I worked with my team mates to put the robot together and fix things between matches if needed. One

of my highlights is beating my teammate at switching tires ;p

Because we won the first time, we were able to participate at Worlds where the best 450 teams of the world come together to fight for the World Title. Sadly, we didn’t win the world title… but we still made it to the quarter finals!

Even though our main focus was the matches, we also did some other fun activities. We went on an airboat and watched the alliga tors, we paintballed, and of course explored Orlando. We even went to NASA to watch a rocket launch!

Going to the US with such a large group of friends was a special experience. You get to know dif ferent sides of each other because you rely on each other to have each other’s backs. Teammates always spoke about Team Rem brandts being one big family, but this year I found out that this is honestly true.

Baked Beanz Curry and Rice

These beans go with pretty much anything. I mean, I used to eat it with bread. Sometimes I used to toast the bread, put the Beans on it and add some cheese (it tastes amazing btw). I survived a whole year by pretty much eating that (I know it isn’t the healthiest to eat the same thing every day, but I have perfected the reci pe). Also, if you think the curry needs more of something or the other, feel free to add it. My tastes are diffe rent to yours, which are different to the next person’s taste.

So, here’s how to make an amazing dish for dinner (sometimes the leftovers taste even better):

Preparation:

First, you want to chop the onions (the smaller the better), and use a garlic crusher to, well, crush the garlic (after peeling them of course).

If you are using chilli peppers, chop them now as well. A trick is to rub some butter (or put some oil) on your hands BEFORE touching the chilli’s, because otherwise your hands will burn (I found out the hard way). If not using chilli peppers, the powder is added later.

It is also recommended to open all the cans before adding things to the pot, otherwise some of the ingre dients may stick to the pot (not ideal when cleaning up).

June 2022 | InSide14

Cooking the Beanz:

Ok. So now that everything is prepared, we can start adding things to the pot. Here’s how to do it:

1. Put some sunflower oil to the pot, (don’t forget switch on the hob) and add the cumin and mustard seeds.

2. When you start to hear some popping noises, add the onions and the garlic and stir until the onions are soft

a. If using chilli peppers, add them now (after onions are soft)

3. Wait a moment or two, then add the canned goods (all three cans of beans and the can of chopped tomatoes)

a. Stir the pot so that the onions and garlic (and chilli peppers) don’t get stuck to the bottom

4. You can also add the following ingredients after the beans/tomatoes are in the pot:

a. Turmeric – ½ teaspoon

b. Cumin and mustard powder – ½ teaspoon

c. Salt – 1 teaspoon

d. Sugar – 2 teaspoons

e. (Chilli powder – 1.5 teaspoons)

5. Now stir the pot so that all he powders get mixed with the rest of the curry

6. Turn down the stove to a lower heat and cover the pot. Leave it be for several minutes (until the beans start to bubble slightly)

a. Make sure to stir he pot every now and again to prevent the beans from stic king to the bottom

7. Now its ready to be eaten (once the rice is cooked of course). Alternatively, you can eat this with bread as well (Tiger/giraffe bread tastes best with this curry)

Cooking the Rice:

To cook the rice, rinse it out first, then boil it until soft. I found that cooking the basmati rice for 11.5 minu tes does the trick perfectly. You can either do this while you cook the beans, or separately (I suggest cooking simultaneously since you can eat immediately afterwards). Anyway, we are assuming that you know how to cook rice, so if you have any other questions about rice specifically, please use Google.

End result:

so now that we’ve cooked everything, we’re ready to eat it. It should look something like the image (but may vary in colour). It tastes really good with plain yogurt (if you have some lying around). A nice cool beer also goes really well with this meal.

If you tried cooking this meal, and it didn’t turn out as planned, don’t worry. It took me some practice as well, and now this is my go-to meal. Enjoy!

Brewing Beer

Beer, who in their right minds doesn’t love it. The way it tastes, the way it smells, the way it makes you feel after you’ve downed about 20 of em. But what could possibly be better than drinking (craft) beers? Exactly, ma king it yourself! Just as other types of food or drinks go, homemade always tastes the best.

But how do you brew your own beer? Well it’s actually very simple and with the help of this article and some googling you too can make your own liquid work of art.

“open up” the kernels, this is done by crushing them in a mill. The kernels do not get turned into a fine powder like flour but more a very coarse sand like texture. This keeps the kernels somewhat whole but leaves enough surface area for the goodies to be extracted.

In short beer has 4 ingredients. First of all malt, this is a slightly germi nated and then dried grain, such as barley or wheat. The malt provides the sugars and protein to create alco hol and a sturdy foam layer. Next in line hops, this is a plant of which the flowering part is used to give different tastes and smells to beer, next to that it also helps in preserving the beer. After hops comes the yeast, the yeast converts the sugars from the malt into the alcohol we love, next to that the yeast gives different aromatics and flavours and also some carbonation. And finally, water. The water, ass you might have guessed is used to combi ne all these ingredients, extract their good stuff and turn it into a proper beer. Now we know the ingredients and roughly what they do we can move on to the brewing process. The brewing process consists of 5 steps. The steps are as follows: milling the malt, the mashing process, the boil, the fermentation process and finally the bottling.

Milling the malt. Malt is usually sold as whole kernels. To be used in the brewing process you have to

With the kernels milled we can start mashing. Mashing is essentially a boil of the milled malt, during this boil enzymes turn the starches in the malt into simple sugars. The mashing happens at different sub boiling points, a common malting scheme is as follows: 10 minutes at 52 Co, 50 minutes at 63 Co and finally 20 mi nutes at 72 Co. Different heats have different effect on the malt and of course give different properties to the beer. Different malts may also require a different malting scheme. After the mashing is done the malt needs to filtered out of the beer.

later, for example if a hops has to be added at 20 minutes in the boil scheme, this means it has to be added 20 minutes before the boil ends (40 minutes after the boil started). A boil scheme could look as follows: bitte ring hops at 60 minutes, hop strain A at 15 minutes and hop strain B at 5 minutes. Now that the boil has ended you let the beer cool down and filter out the hops.

The intensive work is now down and we can start waiting. After the beer has cooled down you add the yeast and put it in a fermenting container for up to three weeks. You can do measurements to determine exactly when the beer is done but 3 weeks is a good milestone.

Now that the beer has fermented we can start bottling. Add a bit of sugar water to the beer, this is to allows some post yeasting whilst in the bottle which creates the carbonation. When the sugar water is added just divide the beer into bottles, cap and let it sit for another three weeks. After three weeks you can try the first beer, but the longer it sits the better it gets!

The next step is the boil. During the boil hops are added to preserve and give properties to the beer. There are a lot of different brands/families of hops each with their own properties and flavours. Just like the mashing process the boil is dived into steps. You add the bittering hops at the beginning of the boil, these preserve the beer and give a lot of bitterness to the beer. Later on in the boil you add the aromatic hops, these hops are boiled for a shorter duration so that they don’t give away much bitterness but more of the hoppy flavours. Boil schemes always count down their time, so lets say the total boil takes 60 minutes, then the bittering hops are added at the start of the boil (60 minutes). Other hops will be added

During the entire brewing process its important that everything that tou ches the beer is *very* well sanitized. You have special products for this but hot water, soap and a proper scrub should do the trick just fine.

I hope this article has given you a nice insight into the world of brewing beer and maybe even convinced you to give it a shot! Anyhow I’m going to drink some homemade beers now, houdoe and keep on brewing.

Led Lighting for a liveable city center, by

How do you give the city center an impulse? By thinking in an integrated way, Heijmans makes environments more liveable and sustainable. It starts with the use of an area and how multiple func tions can be combined to make the public space more vital. In novative design makes the public area more social, more beautiful and safer. And by making use of technology smartly, a climate -proof environment is created that uses energy efficiently and helps to prevent heat stress.

Since 2017, Hengelo has been busy realizing a bustling and attractive city center. This plan also inclu des the transformation of a dull and cluttered parking lot into an attractive event square. The muni cipality’s assignment was clear: the square had to become something really special.

In close collaboration with va rious parties, Heijmans turned the little corner that once served as a simple village square into a vital statement piece for the city.

fountains that spray water up to 2.5 meters high. Underneath are 39 follies, small fountains that spray the water vertically up to 1.5 meters. The spray height and rhythm of the fountains are adjustable, allowing for countless combinations.

Sustainable lighting design

Amazing eye-catcher

Gone are the drab gray vowels. With its warm red clinker bricks and weathering steel gutters in the road surface, the square perfectly connects with the nearby Ensche desestraat. The main eye-catcher of the square is, without a doubt, the large fountain installation. The water feature has 13 jumping

Lighting design

Heijmans also was responsible for the design of the lighting. All ligh ting is executed in red, green, blue and white, which makes all kinds of combinations possible. This way, the square can be colored ap propriately for every event. When it is dark, the fountain provides a fascinating spectacle and makes for a fantastic view on the square.

The lighting not only creates at mosphere, it also improves safety. For example, in the event of an emergency, bright white light can be switched on, putting the square in the spotlight.

The lighting of the Lambertus Basilica and the monumental town hall also were included in the work. These buildings are now cleverly lit and the stained glass windows of the basilica are illumi nated from the inside. This makes these two beautiful buildings even more radiant in the dark and the city center is upgrades with two more ‘highlights’.

Sustainability has been taken into account in all aspects of the design. For example, no drinking water is used. The fountain wa ter comes from a well under the square. Controlled by ingenious measuring equipment, the well replenishes the water that evapo rates in the summer. The light that the water jets give off in fairytale colors in the dark, is fully fed by LED lighting. Furthermore, a lot of green has been added on and around the square. The weathering steel planters contain flowers, shrubs and trees that provide color all year round. These plants are also supplied with water from the source during drought.

The renovation has been well re ceived by residents, entrepreneurs and visitors. The fountain provides cooling on summer days and is an attraction for children. The LED lighting enhances the atmosphere, events get an extra dimension and the square is a nice addition to the city center.

In the spotlight: Thijs Tops

The irreplaceable (lego)man behind almost all of innovum’s ICT services… Thijs Tops! Some people don’t really know what he does anymore and that’s because he does his job well. Some of the things he made/fixed are: the website, striping system, stack and everything with a connection. That’s how talented he is behind a pc, besides a god behind the computer, Thijs is also some people’s saviour in need.

He is a great help to the infirmary on some events and has helped a lot of drunk and stupid people, he also knows a lot about how to help/organize a good event. He is always ready to help and shows his talents in that way. Besides Innovum, he is also very active at the lego league and at his scouting.

in some of his projects, easter eggs and jokes (type “404” in the striping system) can be found. Not many people know but they are present and he enjoys making them, he is not only smart but also inconspicuously funny. Besides all his clubs and things he fixes, he is also a sweet person who is always ready to help. Maybe that’s why he helps out so many committees. His humour can be quite dorky but that’s the best kind. Thijs has done so many things for us over the years, a lot of big projects but also things others rather not do. Thanks for your time and hard work Thijs, may you always be remembered through this page, and all the systems that we use daily.

Hey… Pssstt…… Yes, you there reading this! Are you ready to learn what it really takes to keep all the screens on at our wonderful organisation? Are you ready to take the red pill, and follow me in to the Matrix?

Here at the ICT-Committee we do a lot of work, mostly unseen. All those screens have to be maintained by someone, right? But we even reach beyond that screen. The system you use to buy tickets, merch, got your pizza for the study eve’s? Yes, that is us. The stripes, they don’t count themselves, that’s also a project from the ICT-Committee. And the most impressive things are hidden behind a cool door, the big Elsa server.

But why do I tell you all of this, I hear you think. Let me explain it to you. This wonderful and very integral part of Innovum has some big problems, where you might be able to help us.

The current ICT-Avatar is reaching graduation, and the other members in the committee are too. This means that soon, the burger-nation is going to claim them. So we hope that before they go, another avatar might rise within one of the wonderful engineering lands.

If you think you are willing to take this deep dive with us, want to help us keep Innovum running, let us know!

My journey at Vanderlande The story of Melissa Michielsen

Hi fellow Innovum members! Some of you might recognize me. I am Melissa Michielsen and I was member of Innovum’s board in 2015.

When I studied Mechanical Engineering I soon decided to enjoy my student life to the fullest. I enjoyed meeting lots of people and started to broaden my horizon. Besides enjoying my time as a student, I knew I also wanted to have a clear outlook for the future. When I visited Vanderlande during a company visit, my mind was blown. They have their own Innovation Center where people can have a look at the equipment. It was great seeing those enormous systems into operation. That’s when I knew that I wanted to work there. So in 2018 I joined them as a Mechanical Project Engineer. But what do they do exactly? Vanderlande is the global market leader for future-proof logistic process automation at airports and a leading supplier for warehousing giants and companies in the parcel market.

If I need to describe working at Vanderlande in a few keywords, they would be as follows:

ownership, pride, teamplay, people-centered and lots of opportunities! What I really like is that I can aspire to new heights by connecting with our colleagues all over the globe, enjoy personal growth by working on real life projects in all sizes and thrive on achievement together with my team. We’re all in this together! What I’ve learned is that a problem is no longer a problem if you have the right mindset. Just change it into seeing it as an opportunity along the way.

Did I trigger your enthusiasm?

That’s great! Vanderlande offers a range of exciting internships and graduate assignment opportunities. So if you are ready for a next step, then please join us in your journey.

Aspire. Grow. Achieve. Together. Rise to the challenge and join us!
