Dear Reader,
Finally, after a long wait, the time has come to introduce you guys to the latest edition of the InSi de!
Due to some problems the last InSide wasn’t prin ted, but no worries, we made a smaller version for you to read!
In this InSide you can also find a way to make a ‘Way over budget hot cocoa’ and a way to lose the extra kilo’s from the hot cocoa by joining ‘The marathon, or at least half.’ We also look back at the amazing Lustrum Gala back in November and we will of course introduce you to our board.
I hope you enjoy this edition of the InSide.
Regards, Lindsey van der Linden

The Innovum board for 2022
more shit, but it was way more fun, and I felt more at home, es pecially with Innovum. It was the better choice. I felt at home with Innovum from the start because I am very clumsy or “lomp” as we say it in Dutch. I was rapidly known at Innovum because at the first event I attended I lost my shoe in a pile of sand, and I wasn’t even drunk. Soon after I signed up for the board. Now I am the new chairman of this wonderful new board. I will make sure this will be an amazing year for Innovum.
Talking about boyfriends mine calls me Satan. Don’t know where that came from, but it must be true if he says it.
From a young age it was known that I liked to play more with the boy toys instead of the girl toys, early signs of me becoming an engineer. It was only last sum mer that I bought my first “big” project. I am currently restoring an old moped. I am doing this together with my dad in a way too cold garage.
Gijs van Asten
Dear people of the planet earth, I present to you a short story about the new chairman of 2022.
My name is Gijs Anthonius Johan nes van Asten, but most people call me Gijs. I am 20 years old and live in LIEROP but was sadly born in Helmond. You might not know Lierop because it’s a very small village, but it’s one of the most beautiful places on earth.
From a young age I was interested in building stuff with my bare hands and tinkering with stuff I shouldn’t be tinkering with. I was also very interested in partying and drinking; I also did this from a young age, but I won’t say how young because that might get me in trouble again.
I have always had the dream that I would become the greatest lea der there ever was. So, I started studying mechanical engineering because that’s what all the great leaders do. I started at Avans in Den Bosch, but I soon realized that Avans wasn’t for me. So, the following year I went to Fontys. Fontys was in some aspects even
Hi there! My name is Anouk van Hout and I am 19 years old. I study Mechatronics and am in my 2nd year, sadly still without my P.
I am currently the new sexy secre tary of SV. Innovum. Like most of my board I live in Helmond, we are also known as “Kattemep pers” (cat swatters). Although I don’t really swat any cats, I quite like them. Especially the one my boyfriend owns.
Another thing I like to do to pass the time is drinking and working and sometimes drinking while working. Right now I am working in an old billiard café. I might work there but I sure as hell don’t know how to play billiards. Which is always a cause for conversation as I try to (horribly) explain the game to newcomers.
Favorite Drink? Beer of course. I always like to try new things but I keep coming back to good old beer. Luckily I have only ever had 1 hangover in my entire life. Kind of something I like to flex with. I think that will change this year. That was all for me, gotta leave some room for the other nutjobs.

Anouk van Hout
Dear readers of the InSide, First I would like to make clear it is Steph. Yes with PH, because I am a sour bitch. I am 22 years old and I study mechanical enginee ring.
Originally I come from a far away land called Limburg. If you don’t know where that is, Google Maps is your friend. For now I live in Eindhoven in the Jenga house, yes we have Jenga wars.
For the board of 2022 I will be the treasurer and will be in charge of the money. My Innovum journey started with the party committee three years ago, I unfortunately left them to join the board of 2022. Together we had organized some great drinks and parties until cor oons hit. I hope this year Rutte is a little bit nicer for us and we can start organising drinks again.
I can make stories longer than they have to be. But best part is, I talk very fast. If I tell a story I go to the moon and back with the
speed of light. Unfortunately my English is not that great, so this story will be short. I hope that together with you and my board we will make 2022 a great Innovum year.
My next great love is beer. From your pilsners to ales and stouts any kind of craft beer. I love to try new ones and see what I like. It fascinates me how there can be so many different types of glasses for different types of beer. And to stop any and all debate, the only correct way to serve a pilsje is the superior British way.
Hello! I’m Jack Comyns almost 22 and I’m the new commissioner external of Innovum.
I’m not from the Netherlands and no I don’t mean Limburg, although I have lived there, I’m half-English, half-Irish and I was born in Ireland.
Being a bit of a nerd I love doing puzzles of any sort but mainly sudokus and I love to play board games. Continuing on this trend my favourite subject in school was mathematics, this can still be seen today with me being in my fourth year of applied mathematics.
If you ignore my protective winter layer I have “begrudgingly” put on through beer. I’m a very active guy and love to play sports. For the last 11 years and counting I’ve played basketball with my club Jumping Giants.
My first Innovum party I only partly remember. Of course, it was at bartenders and as usual, there was a lot of beer. One of the last thing I remember was that we got given free pitchers and I was asked to pass one along. Little did I know that a sweet individual had very kindly dropped a golf ball in the pitcher whilst I was holding it. For those of you who don’t know what that means, let’s just say I got very full very quickly. I don’t remember much after that but I do remember that it was a great night and I hope to have many more nights like that, minus the volume, in the coming year.

Niels Doensen
Hello readers of this InSide, I am Niels Doensen and I am your new commissioner for internal relationships.
I am a 2nd year mechanical engi neering student and live in Hel limond. All I do at home is beun on some projects and fix what my parents can’t. Thus engineering is in my blood. I joined Innovum last intro and it was amazing. Ma ybe you remember that weird guy with all the phone numbers on his hat and shirt. Well that was me. I loved it so much that I applied for the board and sadly for you guys, I got voted in.
My next love besides Innovum and beuning projects, is canoe polo. Or as I like to call it rugby in a canoe. Yes it’s like water polo, but instead of playing in the water we play on top of the water in a canoe. Every canoe has a thick rubber bumper on the front and
back to absorb the impact if you ram into an opposing player. Also every player has a helmet with a rack on it, so players don’t need a jaw surgery if they catch the front bumper of your opponent. So as you might have guessed, it’s a rough game. A few rolls of duct tape and tie-wraps can therefore not be missed at a tournament. After all, everything can be fixed with duct tape and tie-wraps.
Well I’ve typed enough again, time for a beer. If you want to know more about me you can meet me in the Innovum room or at Inno vum drinks and parties. That’s it for now. Houdoe.

Together they will be the Innovum board for the year 2022
Ella Hueting from Fontys
Dear students,
Fontys has fully been open for a few weeks at the time of writing this letter. We haven’t noticed much yet as the exams are in progress; however, I hope that the start of the second semester will be buzzing again as nor mal for both lessons and practicals. This means that you will be back to work on your projects in the Nexus Building, the Brainport Industries Campus, the Automotive Campus and R10.
I hope you’ve had a successful exam period. Kindly keep in mind that we are always available for you if some thing is bothering or worrying you, and/or if your studies are not going as planned.
At the end of December we said goodbye to the old board. I would sincerely like to thank them once again for everything they did in the past year. Meanwhile, we have also met the new board. It is great to see how much positive energy there is as well. Without a shadow of doubt, it is going to be another great Innovum year.
We are delighted that Innovum can function at full speed again and open its space to you. This is so impor tant since it turns out that students who are members of a study association can generally achieve better results. We are proud that Innovum is the largest study association in Fontys and that you are so active in it. I am totally convinced that the activities of Innovum will have a positive impact on your study time.
Together with Innovum, we will ensure that you have a great time at Fontys.

Top 3 tips for an excellent kick-off to your engineering career
Although the staffing shortage isn’t a new topic, nowadays it’s more relevant than ever in the field of engineering. The economy and job market are both booming again after the COVID crisis. The dutch are well known for their innovative technical abilities. Absolute world class. However, it is easy to reach the top but a lot harder to stay up there. A challenging and interesting time indeed!
For sure, this means unlimited job opportunities for young professionals in the engineering business. Which happens to be a situation we, being a job agency in the engineering sector for over 25 years, have already experienced several times. So here are our three pieces of advice to make the best out of these challenging times.
1.
Let us do all the work
Do you have a Linkedin profile? If you do, you have certainly noticed the huge ammount of connection requests and job opportunities in your inbox. There are countless jobs waiting for you. So how do you figure out which one suits you best? That’s easy, just leave it up to the experts. At Continu Professionals, we’ve been scouting and mapping the Dutch engineering market since 1995. So maybe even before you were born? We know all the ins and outs about most of the relevant companies around. We know their company cultures, their development opportunities and their working conditions. All you need to do is tell us your conditions, ambitions and dreams and together we will find the right job for you.
2. Show me the money
Just like all economies, the job market is all about supply and demand. Right now, demand is very, very high, which obviously affects prices. So don’t be afraid to ask for an above average salary. However, don’t forget to look around. Yes, you are not the only student are you? Be bold, but never overplay your hand. Aim for a gross starting salary somewhere between € 2500 and € 3000. Don’t worry if the thought of selling yourself scares you. We’ve been there, done that thousands of times and are more than happy to assist you.
3. Use these easy negotiaton tricks
Schrijfjeinvia www.continu.nl/campus
Sure, your starting salary is a very important working condition. So you should never accept the first offer and open the negotiations at 110% of what you’re willing to settle for. However, don’t forget to focus on the total package. What if there is little room to increase your monthly salary, but there are several options for additional holidays, education fees or a company car? Secondary working conditions often have a positive effect on your actual spending money. So, do the math.

The long-awaited, amazing, Lustrum Gala
FINALLY… after waiting for one and a half loooonnggg years the Lustrum Gala was here! As you may re member, the original event (March 2020) had to be cancelled. Apparently, there was a virus going around?
On the 12th of November, the party started. The committee had been working hard all day to get the deco rations ready, and wow did they do a good job! The whole location was completely lit up in Innovum co lours. We knew we were in the right place, which is more than could be said for lots of people looking for the GLOW installations!
There’s a reason that Lustrum Gala only happens once every 5 -or in this case, 6.5- years. We’re used to seeing our members dirty, tired, and not having showered in 5 days (Intro); this side of Innovum was almost unre cognisable! Beautiful ballgowns, sharp suits, even Jeroen had brushed his hair!
After showing your QR-code you were safe to go inside. The location was immense. High ceilings, fabulously decorated in orange and grey, with the Innovum flag in the prominent position on top of the stage. On the stage was a live jazz band, ready to welcome all the guests. The bar was open, so drinks were flowing, along with conversation between new members, old members, and dinosaurs alike! How wonderful it was to see generations of the backbone of Innovum, all in one place!
The live music was given intervals of speeches from some of the Innovum greats:
• The first Chairman
• The 5th Chairman
• The 10th & 11th Chairman
Hearing from these guys really showed us that despite the fact that the association is 10 years further, the core qualities (bier drinken en kut roepen) have stood the test of time. Thanks to Rob Ritzen for speaking on behalf of Ella Heuting and singing us a special birthday song. We’re lucky to have such great teachers within engineering, especially ones who join in with these kinds of student events.
Even though the speakers did a good job of speaking in English, some Dutch things can’t be avoided. For example, ‘Broek uit op je hoofd’, which reached almost a record number in the course of one evening. We all enjoyed some great food prepared by Ketelhuis, to line our stomachs for the open bar, which we dis covered would last the entire evening… Big thanks to the board and the committee for agreeing that the last legal party of the year was allowed to be all or nothing!
A gala would of course not be complete without the king and queen! A Huge congratulations to Sten van der Zee and Karlijn Goossens (Buck’s date) who won on the grounds of most awkward… we mean best dressed! We’d like to take a moment to recognise the debut performance of our very own popstar Emma van Dongen. Emma, thank you for writing a song for us, we really enjoyed it and look forward to many more performan ces from you!
On this positive note, the party was unleashed with the DJ expertise of DJAJAY and DJ Oxidado. The cold and rainy weather outside was drowned out by the sound of party music, people singing and dancing along, and general merriment.
Before we knew it, the clock had struck midnight. All of us (not just Gijs AKA Cinderella) had to go home. As they say, time flies when you’re having fun.
Again, we want to give a huge thanks to the committee who made sure this event wouldn’t be completely can celled. I think I speak for everyone when I say: I’m very excited to see you at the next Lustrum Gala in 2025!

Way over budget hot cocoa
sulting them by telling them how ugly they are, however research suggests that that is not a very effective solution. What is more likely to work is leaving them in the oven for 10 minutes between 120 and 160 degrees Celsius.
Milk
Hot cocoa is a nice drink to have once getting home during winter, most people would do the reaso nable thing where they buy cocoa powder and milk, mix the two and put it in the microwave. However, as we are Fontys students, we are not allowed to be reasonable. So the following instructions will guide you to make the most ex pensive hot cocoa imaginable, you will need:
• Theobroma Cacao tree Trinitario variety 1 Meter - € 60,00
• Cocoa grinder - € 15.000,00
• A cow - € 1.550,00
In total the raw materials would cost € 16.610,00; however we should also factor in the price of the time and labor that it will take to make the raw materials into a fresh cocoa drink.
2. Once the beans are roasted, they must then be peeled, it should also be mentioned that it would be suggested for you to wait for the beans to cool down before trying to peel them. The peel can be thrown away and the nib can be saved for the next step.
1. Feed the cow.
Cocoa Powder
1. Firstly you will have to roast the cocoa beans, you could try in
3. Now that you have cocoa nibs you can start grinding them up, for this it is suggested to use a cocoa grinder, wich will heat them up as well as grind them. The result of this process will be a hard lump of cocoa liquor. You can now put the cocoa liquor into a hy draulic press which will extract a “cocoa butter”.
2. Milk the cow.
Hot cocoa: Now that you have these two main ingredients you can mix the two and put the mixture in a microwa ve and enjoy a fresh tasty bever age!
4. Once the cocoa butter solidi fies you will have what is known as cocoa cake. This you will have to crush up in order to be able to grind it up into a powder.

The marathon, or at least half
Since lockdowns were introduced to our daily lives and people have began to realize the importance of exercise just by not being able to go to the gym, I’ve realized that not having a gym membership is a blessing. For a while now whilst studying and working from home, I’ve been looking outside to see people walking, jogging and cycling at whatever hour. And, well, with some extra motivation from the pants that don’t fit me anymore, I’ve decided I want to be outside more too.
This is not a motivational speech in any way, I’m not about to change my career to be a lifestyle vlogger or blogger since my mo tivation still lies with a nice cold glass of beer, but more about the reward system later. This is also not the story of how I got a lot of money from sponsor contracts to pay off my student loan, and last time I checked I wasn’t a 40-year-old car mechanic with a lot of debt and a plot to keep my garage. Although paying off part of my student loan by run ning for my life would be a great additional motivator to really train for this 21.1 km challenge in 10 months. Yet, I’m not the only one that took this opportunity to lose some weight, gain some stamina and hope that at least one person doesn’t make it in order to get a bunch of free beer.
We’ve started a team, with one task and one and the same chal lenge. MarathonNovum will be running the half marathon of Eindhoven in October of 2022. Our rules are simple, whether you’re an active member, a passive one, a former member, or some body that is just very gezellig and
needs some motivation, you can sign up for MarathonNovum by entering our WhatsApp group. Once you enter, you agree to the terms which are simple, but I’ll list them here just in case:
1. Drop out of the challenge = pay for a keg of beer
2. Not finishing the 21.1 km = pay for a keg of beer
3. Not being able to finish the 21.1km within 3 hours = pay for a keg of beer
You get the picture. For each member of our team, the rules are the same (unless you injure your self trying, then we will maybe be nice to you and not make you pay for a keg). To show you how mo tivated we are, we even bring you some quotes from team members. Stijn Stertefeld: “My motivation in joining MarathonNovum is frankly just because I trust at least one per son will not be able to finish and I’d never say no to free beer.” Another inspirational quote comes from our Prince Charming: “You run your life!”. Unfortunately, he’s not in our team, but we do have the master of backbone, Siem Hen driks : “The number of opinions in
a squared meter was too large and my spinal cord was nowhere to be found either so here we are.”
So, if after reading this fill-up article of this edition of the InSi de you think, well I’m up for the challenge, think again. I’ll give you a few seconds… You’re still thinking about it, well sure, if you think you can do it, sign up and join our team! If you’re a (former) board member and you think, that board belly has been here for quite some time now, might be an idea to see if I can get rid of it, sign up and join our team!
Need I say more to convince you to join? Ohh, was this not a cam paign to gather more idiots who think they can do it and increase our chances of someone failing. Oops. Here’s a fun motivational quote to finish with, and you’ll see our follow-up article on the pro gress of our members in the next edition or something, take care!
P.S. I was tricked!

Kisses, Emma van Dongen (also here for the beer and getting rid of that board belly)
In the spotlight: Bas Dieben
How and why did you get your internship at Vanderlande?
Of course I had already heard about Vanderlande but my first actual contact was via a company visit. While there we got a lecture from an old Innovum member and I thought the company was really interesting so I applied for an internship. At the time they did not have a normal internship only internships designed for gradua ting. But the company hooked me up with a normal internship at the R&D department.
Life after being on the board
What happens to old board mem bers? Well most of them go on to their internship or graduation. Right now we are going to take a look at Bas Dieben, Chairman of the 22nd and 23rd board of SV. In novum. Bas is doing his internship right now at a sponsor of ours. Vanderlande is a global market leader for logistics process auto mation for airports and automati on solutions at warehouses and in the parcel market.
What is the Project you are wor king on?
The project I’m working on invol ves researching and developing upgrades to an existing technology for sorting parcels. The technology has been used by Vanderlande but with the projected upgrades it will work more reliably and faster than it did Most of the work I do is customizing the software to find the optimal configurations. We have an area comparable to a small football field to test and develop what we are working on.
What is it like to
work
at Vander lande?
Vanderlande is a very big compa ny but the team I am working with is very nice. Everyone here is very helpful and enthusiastic about what we are working on.

RS Components
What is RS Components
RS Components (nl.rs-online. com) is a website where you can purchase electronic components. It is part of the Electrocomponents Group (founded as Radiospares in 1937, London). Radiospares aimed to sell spare parts for (now real ly old) radios. When 1971 came around, Radiospares rebranded themselves as RS Components (RS probably stands for Radiospares anyhow).
Currently, RS Components ships more than 50,000 parcels daily, to over 80 countries. They also sell over 500,000 products, inclu ding electronics, automation and control components, engineering tools and consumables, to over one million customers. In 2012, both RS Online and its sister com pany, Allied Electronics, became two of the main manufacturers and distributors for the Raspberry Pi.
What are we on about?
Well, SV. Innovum has made First Contact with RS Components (well, not really coz we can just use their website). We are now al lowing students to place orders on RS Components via Innovum. Another burning question you may be asking, is: “Why would I need to order components from these guys? Why not somewhere like TinyTronics?” And that would
be a great question we would love to answer. All I can say is that RS Components does more stuff with actual circuits (switches, wires, passive/active components, and tools for testing circuits, for exam ple). This is great if you are trying to design PCBs and other things that need stuff like capacitors, diodes, and whatnot.
components in these diagrams, including: capacitors; MOSFETs; headers; Zener diodes; headers; and resistors. These components are placed in such a way, that the input from the car (i.e. turning a light on/off) is transferred through the circuit to the correct output with minimal risks of overloading. Note: these diagrams are prelimi nary, so the final schematics may look different. Also, other parts of the car (such as the breaking/na vigation systems) that will be built may include different components. For the lighting system, these components will then be put onto a PCB and later installed in the car. Of course, RS Components of fer a whole range of components, not just these ones (I only need these ones).
Using Components from RS
So now you may be thinking: “Ok, I want to use RS Components, but what can I do with the components I order?”
To answer that question, I want you to look at the images on the next page. These images show a preliminary schematic for a ligh ting system in an electric car (dra wn by me using a program called Altium, but that’s not the point). You may now also be asking “Why does this guy need to draw sche matics of the lighting system of an electric car?”. My answer would be: “It’s for a project, but also beside the point”
Anyway. Coming back to these diagrams, each component will be ordered from RS Components, then soldered onto a PCB. The aim for these schematics is to func tion as a lighting system (hope fully it works). There are several
How to order from RS Compo nents
Now that you’ve decided that RS Components is a cool website for us engineers, you may be asking: “How and where do I get my hands on these components?”. To answer that first you will need to visit the following website: rs-online.com and select your country (The Netherlands if you don’t know). From there, you will want to browse (or search for) the parts you want. If you already have the Manufacturer Number or the RS stock number, you can just search for that to get the exact product you need. To order from RS- online, you will need to log in to the Innovum account. (This is because only corporations can order from RS Components). If you contact the Innovum Board, they will either give you the login details, or help you to order your components.

Inside the InSide
Inside the InSide
We got the question from our chairman if we could make a guide on how to make the InSide. As a guidance for new members, for if they ever need to do this. And there is no better way than to place it in the InSide. If a new member is searching for the guide this is the only place they can find it.
Software from Adobe
The InSide is mainly made with Adobe programs. The front-pa ge and the back-page are made with Photoshop. And the rest of the magazine is made with InDe sign, a program made for making printable magazines. It is not hard to learn how these work. There are a lot of tutorials on working with these programs. Here is a playlist:
The template
There is some sort of standard lay out to the InSide. We start with the front-page. The front-page is often made in Photoshop. The se programs work fine together because they are both made by Adobe. Then page 2 with a messa ge from the media chairman. Page 3 has QR-codes. Most of the pages are articles and sponsor pages. In the middle is the centerfold with pictures of recent events. The InSide often includes a spotlight/ interview, a page from Fontys, a do-it-yourself section, comics and a puzzle. The last page is the back page of the InSide.
Layout
If you are the designer of the InSide you may change the lay out to how you like it. But it still needs to be recognisable. The number of pages always needs to be a multiple of 4. If you don’t do that, the last page’s will be white. Yes i learned that the hard way. When adding pictures never add pictures sent by WhatsApp becau se the quality is often bad (because of image conversion). If it is a original picture always send it by Email.
Printing
Before printing the InSide, there is one important setting. In the page settings you need to enable page bleed. The distance needs to be 3mm from the edges of the pages. This is so no white lines show up after combining the pages. See the image below.
If the InSide is done let it get checked by the committee mem bers and there are always some annoying old members who don’t have problems telling you where you made a mistake. If everything is done you can send it to the board and they will send it to the copy shop. From that moment it is their problem and you can sleep finally :P
In this playlist there are a lot of tu torials about InDesign. Start with the basic and go on from there. If you don’t understand how it works ask the current designer of the InSide.
March 2022 | InSide18
The InSide Timeline
2009
Innovum is formed and the first InSide is made. The magazine seems to be made in Microsoft Word and the layout is very basic.
2010
The InSide has a new logo that looks like the Innovum logo. The layout of the magazine has improved, but is still very basic.
2014
This period is the dark age for InSide design. This is one of the laziest covers of the InSide.
2016
The InSide gets a new layout! It is much better than before. The future Inside layouts are still based on this one. The cover looks a bit bland.
2017
We have peaked. It will only be downhill from here. This is the best designed Inside in the history of the InSide. The knowledge to produce this layout has been lost to time.
2020
For the second lustrum year the usual design of the InSide has been turned to gold!
2022
The design of the InSide has been tweaked a little. The layout is very similar, but the cover and backpa ge have been remade.

The Beuncommittee
Dear reader, member and future engineers (unless you study applied mathemathics)
You may have heard some rumors about a new committee being made, a committee to fix all of Innovums physical problems, a committee that allows only the best of the best to enter, a committee that strives for per fection in whatever it is that they create.
Well, we are here to confirm those rumors. As of 2022 and by order of the new board, the beuncommitte was blown into life. Our duties will consist of repairing/installing and building new items for in the Innovum room. Next to that we will assist other committees whenever they need something made. And last but most definitely not least, we aspire to organize “tinker afternoons”. During these afternoons each and every Inno vum member can walk in and get some help with repairing their bicycle, moped or even their car.
The mighty beuncommittee as of right now consist of 2 experienced engineers, Boaz Ruis as Chairman and Wilco van Homelen as Secretary. 2 members are a good start, but we need more. So do you think you belong to the elite of the engineers? Apply for the beuncommittee and show us what you’re worth.
For applications you can WhatsApp to Boaz +31683094532.
