SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF CHEESE(CAKE)

Basque is Chirn Park’s HQ of cheesecake and sips.

Every once in a blue moon, we get whispers of a place so epic, we can’t say for sure if we’re actually dreaming. Something truly delicious has been baking in Chirn Park, with the artisan bakehouse, Basque, combining two signature specialties: cheesecake and champagne #isthisevenreallife?! Yep, we might have just died and gone to heaven.

There are few sweet treats so universally beloved as the humble cheesecake, with its irresistible allure and ability to send even those curiously dessert-averse individuals weak at the cheese. And when you hear that it’s specialising in not only that, but bubbles too, you know it’s gonna be When Harry Met Sally levels of OMG-good.

This hospo super duo have bought their respective industry experience to Basque. The kitchen is headed by Laura, formerly a head pastry chef for four years at two hatted restaurant Aubergine in Canberra, in addition to head pastry chef at Rebel Rebel. Zac brought his drinks wizardry to the table to curate the fun and varied selection of bubbles. He spent 10 years honing his talent and led the team at award winning whisky bar Molly for six years.

“Basque exists to ensure that any truly special occasion is matched by a truly memorable cake”, with its arrival also offering the perfect solution to the age old question: ‘what should I bring?’. The couple adds, “We can help you say congratulations, thank you, sorry, goodbye, happy birthday or welcome”. Though in our humble opinions, ‘just because’ is just as valid, too #lifeisshort #eatthecake.

The locale for the space was a no brainer for the pair, saying “We fell in love with the community at Chirn Park”, though we have little doubt that feeling will be very mutual indeed. In the ultimate win for both Laura and Zac and lucky locals, “The space was also a bakery beforehand so it came with a massive commercial four deck oven ready to go. This

6 | insidegoldcoast.com.au
EAT +DRINK

was a big drawcard for us being able to move in and start baking.”

The venue includes intimate seating options both indoors and outdoors on the front deck, welcoming customers to partake in an obligatory slice of that signature cheesecake, or a convenient pit stop to pick up a celebratory cake on their way past. The fit out is every bit as chic as you’d expect, with a boutique feel to match the artisan-style baked goods. Timber herringbone floors frame the light-filled space, complimented by an array of elegant ambient lighting features. With the venue’s signature sweet originating from Basque Country on the border between Spain and France, the menu offers a taste of the best of both countries, with a Spanish Cheesecake and French Champagne selection. To complement is a rotating selection of sweet treats, batch brew and cold brew coffee, as well as a variety of gift pack options.

Officially redefining (or forever ruining) the standard coffee catch-up with the gal pals, the most notable highlights will of course be that signature Basque cheesecake in addition to Champagne and sparkling wines available by the bottle.

The couple has worked hard to curate a “fun selection of bubbles across a few styles that we hope will cater to all taste palettes and budgets. Everything from Australian Pet Nat & Prosecco, Spanish Cava and of course a variety of French Champagnes including some of the big houses and some independent grower Champagnes.”

We’re not sure which part we’re most excited for, but it doesn’t matter bc we can have our champas and cake (and eat it too, obvs). But for now, our cravings remain well and truly off the Richter scale.

“A cheesecake shop that sells wine, a wine bar that sells cheesecake!”

HAVE A HULL OF A TIME WITH HOLY

SHIP

Dinner and drinks on glowed-up trawlers? Fishizzle!

Avast, me hearties! Feast your eyes on the newest dining destination set to make waves here on the Gold Coast – Holy Ship Bar and Restaurant.

A treasure trove for both locals and visitors, Holy Ship invites you aboard their seas-oned trawlers, the ‘FV Havana’ and ‘Austral Eagle,’ for a spectacular dining experience that’ll have you in a chokehold, hook, line, and sinker.

Not to be confused with your average whiffy trawlers, these authentic timber beauties have been refurbished to perfection, inspired by the traditional

charm of timber vessels, but with a striking modern twist. Perfect for your next event, there’s indoor covered dining for 56 people on custom timber furniture, with outdoor seating on the upper deck on both vessels (up to 36 people on FV Havana and 12 people on Austral Eagle).

We’re talking front-row seats to the stunning Broadwater and a dining/sipping experience set to become a GC lega-sea.

So what’s on the menu? Plenty of seafood for a start and duh, no ship Sherlock. Austral Eagle’s full commercial kitchen serves up fresh trawler seafood and an array of small plates.

Why not start with some Oysters, natural, mignonette, Kilpatrick or even Thai style? Then, tuck into their signature dish, the ‘Holy Ship I’ll Have It All’ seafood platter, with oysters, prawns, bugs, salmon and sashimi a-plenty. If land dwelling fare is more your thing, how about some Saucy BBQ Ribs or a ship-shape Charcuterie Board with all-thethings?

If you’re anything like us, we want to know all-a-boat the bevs and yes, these tidy trawlers pack a punch with their oar-some

8 | insidegoldcoast.com.au

drinks selection. Get shipfaced at the bar on FV Havana (but don’t really) with its 10-tap system serving up beer, wine, ready-to-drink spirits and cocktails. Speaking of, it would be remiss of us not to single out their signature sips – the Frozen Margarita and Cosmopolitan – which folks, are a shore thing.

Who masterminded this maritime marvel, you ask? None other than Kane and Yvette McCarthy, the legends behind the iconic Tonic on Chirn Park and ELV 525 on Mt Tamborine, along with co-owner Jake Ruttley. With their extensive expertise and passion for hospitality, it’s o-fish-al – we’re ready to dock and roll.

Kane, Yvette and Jake’s journey to bring Holy Ship to life has been nothing short of epic. It started with finding the illustrious Austral Eagle in Harvey Bay, a famous shark fishing trawler that worked actively out of her Adelaide port. Her sister from another mista, FV Havana, is a local girl, who was still fishing prawns in Tweed Heads until she was recently lifted out.

Both old girls were renovated on the hard stand at Coomera for 18 months, stripped back to their bare hulls and rebuilt to their former glory.

Sea you there!

SAY NAMASTE TO THIS FRESH-FACED YOGA HAVEN

Flolo Studio is the best barre none.

Whether you’re partial to the odd stretch-induced sweat sesh, or you’re a daily mind-body devotee, finding a perfect yoga studio that ticks all the boxes is like striking gold. We mean, is a spacious yet cosy, modern but not clinical space with a great vibe aaaand *dramatic inhale* a convenient location really so much to ask?!

Which is why, if you’ve noticed yoga circuit stalwart, Floating Lotus Studio MIA recently, we’re happy to report we can all breathe an (ocean breath sized) sigh of relief. Join us in breaking out the Sun Salutations as the fan-fave blossoms into its elevated new era as Flolo Studio… aand, exhale.

Widely considered one of the best by the Gold Coast’s bendiest, Floating Lotus Studio

has gone from strength to strength in recent years. After helping Gold Coasters achieve Asana, feel energised and move like we never left our 20’s for some seven years, owners Nalini and Jason Tebbey felt it was time to embark on a total transformation to better reflect the evolution of their brand’s bespoke wellness offering.

Now sporting a slick new moniker to go with the top notch yoga and pilates experience we know and love, Flolo Studio encapsulates their vision for a modern, accessible, and memorable wellness space. Plus, it’s just downright fun to say.

Proudly boasting a broad variety of membership options, class styles and teachers, local down-dog disciples can get everything from their flow yoga to barre fix out of two lush locations in Helensvale and Robina.

Originally taking the reins of the OG Helensvale studio back in 2017, Nalini and Jason focused their efforts into transforming the flagging space into a thriving community; later moving to a larger location at Homeworld Helensvale to keep up with demand.

10 | insidegoldcoast.com.au
HEALTH + WELLBEING

Bolstering their offering with a yoga-retreat vibing second location in Robina early last year, the dreamy new addition has been going great ‘guns’ since (see what we did there… flexes arm Arnie style). Both promise a boutique studio experience that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. The two spaces provide a sense of yin yang, balancing a light and airy Helensvale vibe with a soothing, moody ambience in Robina. And hot tip, flexibility fiends, you can even go between the two depending on your mood with any of the memberships or passes on offer.

For Nalini and Jason, living and (literally) breathing this yoga business is their passion. At its core Flolo is about “making movement as accessible as possible to as many people as possible” and having fun in the process, adding “our studios have a strong community focus, it is an absolute joy to see the connections that our members make in studio, to themselves, and to each other”. Om, anyone else feel those FOMO levels suddenly skyrocketing?

There’s clearly something pretty special in the water here, folks.

As a special treat just for Inside Gold Coast readers, Flolo Studio has hooked us up with an exclusive special so we can experience that difference for ourselves. Scan below for 7 days of unlimited classes! Ahh, just the nudge we needed.

GEORGE, THIS DELI IS A WINNER!

Gorge on loaded NY style subs and handmade donuts at George’s Deli.

Sucker for a sando? Rhetorical question. Specifically, the NY-style, pastrami and pickle stuffed variety frequenting delicatessens from Brooklyn to Manhattan – you know, the ones usually only found at the other end of a 20 hour red eye? *Cue major fomo*

Well, ‘donut’ despair, peckish folk, George’s Deli is here – and they come bearing delicious (suspiciously sub-shaped) gifts. Get your first look at the new, sandwichslinging kid on Kingscliff’s block…

Bringing handmade donuts, coffee and

cold-cut loaded subs to the coastal township’s beach-studded main drag – George’s signifies the delicious debut for double-threat chef power couple, Johnny Ang and his wife Jerrika. Rounding out the venue’s ragtag trio of Reuben-slinging chefs, the husband and wife team are joined by Johnny’s sister, a skilled chef in her own right, to keep the portable treat offering ticking along. Doling out handheld bites to Marine Parade’s beachfront perambulators, the compact menu melds beverages and baked-goods infused with Filipino influences, with classic New Yorkinspired sandwiches. Inspired by her travels abroad, Jerrika was the driving force behind the deli fusion concept. First uncovering her appreciation for the delicatessen staple (and the unique and vibrant foodie culture, obviously) following a stint in the US to complete her apprenticeship.

The couple, who had their meet cute cheffing aboard a cruise ship, bonded over their shared passion for culinary innovation. Later embarking on an opportunity based in Casuarina, Johnny and Jerrika quickly caught

feelings for the locale’s knockout looks, laidback vibe and people. They’re only human, right?

For their first ever culinary venture, the crew engaged the services of local experts Kobi Concepts and Coakers Building to handle the interior direction and fit out, respectively. Going for a cool, retro deli aesthetic (insert sparkly emoji – the millennial equivalent of jazz hands, here) peppered throughout George’s interior are rustic tiles, pops of red and an awning window that opens wide to the surf beyond. Basically, we predict this ultra-cute sando spot is set to be some pretty hot real estate among southern punters.

Originally hailing from the Philippines, the passionate foodies have also jumped at the chance to pay homage to their culinary heritage by incorporating nationally-beloved flavours from their homeland into their offering. Weaving in flavours seldom found in Australia, such as Ube, the distinctive purple yam, which you can get in Latte or house-made Donut form.

Mouth watering at the prospect of getting your mitts on those pillowy hand-crafted donuts? Well, hold on to your britches, Gold Coasters –‘cuz we’ll really be ‘ruben’ it in as we unpack the rest of the menu.

To complement the unmissable Ube Donuts, the signature offering is centred around the short but sweet selection of signature toasties. Such as the La Cubano, made with pork ham, lechon, pickles and Swiss and the Ain’t Reuben toasties, which are both firmly in the #MustTry realm. Be there, or be square, sandwich fans!

FORECAST SAYS COAST IS CLEAR

Coast Beach Bar’s upgraded Rooftop Terrace is a winner, whatever the weather.

If there’s one thing we love on the GC, it’s some good ol’ fashioned rooftop revelling. While we all love a good day spent soaking up the sunshine, sea breeze and million-dollar panoramic views… sometimes the weather has other plans.

Fortuitously (for those of us who fancy a spot of rooftop noshin’), Coast Beach Bar & Kitchen has sweetened the deal on one of Surfers’ most stunning vantages – unveiling a slick new all-weather look for its formerly open air Beach Bar Terrace.

Meaning we can now get amongst beachfront bottomless lunches and devour

Steak Frites seshes – rain, hail or shine… Can we get a ‘hail yeah’?!

In the few short years since owners Justin and Elizabeth Allie threw open Coast’s doors, the beachfront beauty has earned itself quite the rep for delivering knockout nosh, sips and downright impressive views, inside and out. The only catch is the latter left the otherwise impeccable experience at the mercy of the elements.

After a few practical tweaks for the more casual of Coast’s two spaces, the Beach Bar Terrace now comes complete with all the mod-cons – namely, a state-of-theart retractable roof and enhanced wind protection, because lbh, fielding windswept manes whilst dining is not a vibe.

In addition to the all-weather upgrade, the refurb also delivers a fresh, dedicated Terrace menu and a brand new kitchen for the oceanfront space – with a private dining room to capitalise on every square inch of that stunning shoreline to be revealed soon… we can hardly wait.

NUTS FOR NIGIRI?

That’s how Sushi Jiro rolls.

If you prefer your standout sushi feasts to come with a show, news of Pacific Fair’s new train-style sushi purveyor will likely send your cravings off the Richter. So, pack your appetite and make your way directly to Broadbeach’s resident recreation destination, as the GC scores a brand new location from the famed interstate franchise, Sushi Jiro.

Boasting some 20 locations down south, Sushi Jiro has earned quite the rep for an artful, inventive and undeniably delectable approach to all things sushi.

If you’re after a Japanesestyle feast with plenty of pizzazz – Pac Fair’s latest is the whole package deal. Tucked away in the food court down the Target end, the futuristic sushi spot offers a modern vibe and fresh, hand-crafted bites for mallgoers who want to sidestep the usual fast-food suspects in favour of a slightly slicker dining experience.

Equal parts delicious and entertaining; punters can sidle up to plates upon plates of rolled, seared and sliced specialities like Katsu-stuffed Handrolls, Pork Gyoza and Spicy Salmon Aburi – all arriving via robot or conveyor belt before being promptly devoured. Which will forever be the coolest delivery method, no matter what unwieldy number our drivers licence may allege.

For the certified ‘community of sushi lovers’ behind Sushi Jiro, curating a dining experience that “excites and refreshes your senses” is all part of the deal – as is showcasing the highest-quality fresh ingredients. Alongside time-honoured helpings of Handrolls, Nigiri and Sashimi, punters can tuck in to unexpected

specialties such as Nori Tacos – the deepfried seaweed taco shell stuffed with perfectly seasoned sushi rice and your favourite topping – a dish that qualifies for #MustTry status on curiosity alone.

For peckish mall-goers on a mission, the requisite array of tasty, ready-made morsels are ready and raring to go; but for those with a little time up their sleeves, treating yourself to a full immersive and interactive experience is highly recommended. That is – perched in pole position, at a booth or counter, to sample whichever wares take your fancy from the rotating conveyor belt selection.

Just be sure to leave some room for the a la carte menu – and not just because your selection will be delivered by miniature Robot-butlers darting adorably about on-demand – but because it wouldn’t be a sushi date without fresh-cooked serves of crispy Karaage Chicken or Okonomiyaki (the delicious sauce-laden savoury Japanese pancake, as fun to eat as it is to say).

Offering more choice than you can ‘Poke’ stick at – in addition to the stalwart fried and crispy Hot Food assortment, there’s dedicated Poke Bowl & Chirashi and Udon menus, and a hefty selection of Handrolls, Mini rolls, veggie and vegan delights; all whipped up using an ever-evolving list of house-made sauces.

So sushi fans, if interactive, Japanese-style dining experiences are your jam, we reckon you’ll find plenty to tickle your fancy at Pac Fair’s sleek new nori-slinging nosher, Sushi Jiro. Look out stretchy pants, we’re comin’ for ya.

BROADBEACH WATERS
A WORLD WHERE THE ARTISTRY AND PASSION OF MODERN JAPANESE CUISINE COMES TO LIFE

LOCKS TO LOVE

AW Hair Studio makes waves in Surfers.

Ready to channel a noughties-style shampoo commercial? We mean the type of bouncy, freshly coiffed locks that leave you glowing. Scoring some of that salon-fresh swagger just became even more convenient, as Broadbeach’s resident mane masters, AW Hair has branched out with a slick new second location.

For Broadbeach’s team of tress experts, delivering those exact, ‘bouncing down the street’ feels, 100% of the time is what it’s all about. Since we all know finding a high quality hairdresser can be a lot harder than it locks, allow us to set the tone. This crew boasts some serious clout when it comes to

all things colour and trim.

With owner and UK-certified hair whiz Amber Whittle at the helm, AW Hair’s boutique brand has been amassing devotees across the GC for some ten years now. TWEED’S RIPPER NEW CREEKSIDE CAFE

Refuel with brunch, burgers and cafe bites at Riverland Kitchen.

Raise your hand if you can’t resist wrapping your lips around a thick pair of juicy buns… burger buns, that is. If you’re also a southern local, or partial to the odd jaunt over the border – keep that hand up, then immediately assume a roof-raising position – as Tweed welcomes Riverland Kitchen, the creekside all-rounder bringing brekkie bites and gourmet burgers to the banks of Terranora Creek… #score!

For eagle-eyed residents pondering the recent spruce-up for Kennedy Drive’s stalwart, nosh-slinging corner tenancy, Riverland Kitchen’s grand reveal finally answered the question on everyone’s lips. That is, just what deliciousness has the revamped riverfront site got in store?

Shaking up the former Worst Burger site; new owners Steve Kitson and Marc Bocquee have opted for a “little bit of the same and a little bit different” approach for the reimagined venue. Adding that, essentially the aim was to “spoil the locals with tasty, creative and fresh foods and a beautiful space to relax”.

Well, give us a golden ticket and call

us Augustus Gloop, because spoilt we are. Though there is no chocolate river, health nuts can channel their inner kid-in-achocolate-factory over rotating Raw Earth Organic Kombucha flavours flowing from the taps, while caffeine-lovers are kept plied with locally roasted Paradox Organic Coffee

And to wrap our sticky little mitts around; mouth-watering bites like Jalapeño and Provolone Arancini, Smoked Salmon stuffed LA Bagels and Buttermilk Fried Chicken Burgers (or wings!) will no doubt be received with delight by all.

And if based on that little array of tastebud teasers you’ve surmised this may not be the first rodeo for the Riverland crew, you’d be right. It’s little wonder really – when you consider Marc’s background in fine dining establishments and a bunch of accolades to boot, such as a chef’s hat from the Australian Good Food Guide, thankyouverymuch.

Most recently spending the last two and a half years working as Head Chef for the previous business, Marc and the team reckon they’ve got the edge on what

32 | insidegoldcoast.com.au

punters – especially Gold Coast locals – love about burgers and everything in between.

And, after seductively ogling the menu several times, we’re inclined to agree.

Noting that the perfectly positioned business had come up for sale, for the nowRiverland crew, what started as casual, dinner table chatter with out-of-town rello’s quickly spiralled into a fully-fledged dream in the blink of an eye… #WellThatEscalatedQuickly.

Sporting a fresh lick of paint, with crisp white and coastal-inspired decor featured throughout, the charming creekside spot is looking better than ever.

For Tweed’s riverside perambulators, Riverland Kitchen beckons with cafe-style feasts such as syrup-drenched Belgian Golden Waffles, and the ‘Truck Stop’, made with Fried Cheese Kransky, Hash Browns, Crispy Bacon, Cheddar and Sweet Onion Frittata; that morph seamlessly into several iterations of Belgium Waffle Fries and bunbased delights as the day wears on.

And while we could dedicate an entire write up to the burger menu alone, if we absolutely had to pick – it’s hard to go past the Crispy Pig, made with Crispy Goalie Pork Belly, Sauerkraut, Slaw, BBQ Sauce, Pickles, Dijon Mustard Mayo

Not to mention, a selection of libations so stacked it could make a milk bar blush – with Loose Leaf Teas, Smoothies, Fresh OJ and loaded Shakes (think Tim Tam and Jersey Caramel) to complement the specialty coffee and kombucha line up.

GET SET FOR SIPS

Your pre-flight oasis awaits at The Sand Bar.

Paging all outbound foodies: conditions are clear with a high chance of Margs, Espresso Martini’s and pre-flight feasting at the Gold Coast Airport’s lush new all-day eats and sips spot, The Sand Bar.

The latest in a long line of mouth-watering new venues as a part of GCA’s ongoing $500m overhaul, the chic new addition means we can say good riddance to sog-town cafeteria sandos and hello to bookending our journey with decadent bites such as truffle-oil drizzled Tortuto pizzas, perfectly spiced Shakshuka and crafted cocktails.

Though don’t be thinking The Sand Bar will be your usual, departure lounge dwelling watering hole. The inventive, signature selection of Gold Coast inspired cocktails speaks for itself – with fanciful

libations like the Barbie Blush created as an ode to the GC golden girl herself, Margot Robbie.

An extremely sip-able concoction made with raspberry liqueur, elderflower liqueur and cranberry juice and naturally, Papa Salt Gin – we don’t know about you guys, but it looks like holiday mode is kicking in a little early for our next trip… Holiday Barbie, come at us! (Honourable mention business travellers, ‘cuz dining on the bosses dime is a close second.)

Continuing the local theme, punters can get a taste of the GC’s burgeoning craft brew scene with ice cold, Burleigh-brewed Black Hops straight from the tap; while the entire eats menu showcases the ‘best of locally sourced ingredients for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks’.

Serving up the ultimate selection of anytime eats daily from 5am; passengers can opt for quick bites like B&E Rolls or Super Smoothies from the Liquid Breakfast menu or linger for long lunches with share plates of Coconut Crumbed Prawns and Lamb Kofta (and the wine list, should you feel so led).

With yet another home-grown nod, the GC’s own culinary maestro Matt Jefferson (of Social Eating House and Orzo’s fame) has also imparted his Midas touch onto a

34 | insidegoldcoast.com.au

selection of signature dishes collaboration with the new venue. Heck, we’re ready to book a spontaneous flight just to get a taste of contributions like the sourdough Brûlée French Crumpet, served with double cream and berries alone.

Looking decidedly more put-together than our typical, athleisure-clad airport lewk, the chic fit out offers a modern yet welcoming ambience to suit the mouth-watering morsel curation. Completed by Cottee Parker Architects and Burleigh’s AC Fitouts, the space has taken its direction from coastal influences, with golden tones and lush, flowing lines for days.

While the soothing, softly lit palette is all about the vibes, The Sand Bar’s thoughtfully designed space also includes practical perks like a plentiful mix of seating and departure screens fitted throughout… for those of us partial to getting a little… *ahem* carried away after a Barbie Blush or two.

Entirely unrelated, but… is anyone else feeling the sudden and overwhelming urge to finally heed the advice of Dads everywhere and arrive at the airport several hours early for our next flight?!

So sky-farers, swing by The Sand Bar before you next take off – because this oasis-vibing sip spot might just be your new favourite preflight ritual.

GET IN YOUR HIGHER SELF ERA

Make spiritual self-care a priority with Black Iron Arts.

Gold Coasters, when push comes to shakra – on a scale of one to full-blown witchy-type, how woo-woo are you? Whether you love dabbling in all things alternative healing or you just feel you’re lacking a little direction in your life – if you’re ready to open your mind, nourish the soul and embrace your enlightened era, Black Iron Arts is the name you need to know.

At its core, spiritual counselling aims to help people feel happier, more peaceful, connected and more aligned with the life they really want to live. And really, who couldn’t use more of these things in their lives?

A man who has dedicated his life to mastering the mind body connection, Aki Scribe believes connecting to your authentic self can transform your life. After 20 years of spiritual practice, a deep spiritual insight in 2022 inspired him to channel his life’s calling into assisting others on their own journey of self attunement. Enter Black Iron Arts.

Specialising in practices such as the ancient art of I Ching Divination, Aki has poured his

passion into making spiritual guidance more readily accessible to all. Under the banner of his newly launched spiritual studio, Black Iron Arts, Aki offers a range of spiritual counselling services, including a series of guided modules which offer a framework to kick start the powerful journey of personal growth.

Designed to deep dive into the transformative process, the 1-on-1 modules guide participants through concepts such as connecting with The Authentic Self and Creating Your Dream Life, which Aki says can create deeper relationships with other people and open up a deeper level of intelligence.

Throughout the first module, for example, Aki walks you through concepts such as ‘your Self-Concept creates your reality’ and Samskaras (Negative Energy Scars), exploring the idea that the way that you see yourself and the way that you feel about yourself, forms the parameters of the life you can achieve.

Aki also provides insight to help identify and define your dream self, Aki believes that your authentic self is your dream self and that your authentic self gets obscured by

Samskaras (Negative Energy Scars) and negative or unconscious beliefs, by removing Samakaras and by questioning those unconscious beliefs, you can begin to connect with your authentic or ‘Dream’ self hidden within. Which brings a whole new meaning to ‘living our best lives’, no?

Spiritual services such as I Ching Divination, on the other hand, is based on the ancient Chinese divination text that’s been used for thousands of years to provide guidance, insight, and wisdom. Often considered the world’s oldest oracle – for the uninitiated, I Ching is based on the principle that the universe is in a constant state of change. By decoding a series of hexagrams which represent different situations and energies, diviners can provide insights on the mysterious and changing ways of the universe; offering guidance and advice on how best to navigate it along the way.

For those with something specific in mind, Aki also offers his in depth expertise via general Spiritual Counselling sessions. With 1-on-1, in person or video call coaching available to receive guidance on the spiritual subject or goals of your choosing.

So what say you, Gold Coasters? Has life been feeling a little flat, or you feel like you’re lacking clarity or purpose? Ready to dive in to the fascinating world of alternative healing and unlock your higher self? If it’s answers you seek, Aki Scribe and Black Iron Arts’ holistic spiritual approach is where it’s at.

NOTHING COMPARES TO Y…AKITORI

Charcoal Charcoal Yakitori is sssmokin’.

There are few scents so instantaneously mesmerising that they can stop you dead in your tracks – but the aroma of charcoal-cooked fare sizzling away on the open coals is absolutely up there with the best of them.

If sudden hunger pangs have struck as the distinct hint of char fills the air around Robina of late, chances are you’ve caught the aroma of their new resident skewer-slinger, Charcoal Charcoal Yakitori.

The brainchild of husband and wife duo, co-owner Harper Sun says Charcoal Charcoal Yakitori is their answer to the locale’s somewhat lacking late night offering, noting that tasty fare can be hard to track down in Robina after 8pm. Marrying authentic Japanese methods with Western influences –the new Asian fusion haunt brings glistening

bowls of Ramen, Sashimi, and the requisite assortment of juicy skewers – threaded with tantalising combos like M8–M9 Wagyu and lychee before being given the Binchotan charcoal grill treatment.

Traditional Binchotan, a Japanese white charcoal coveted for its smokeless and longburning properties, is widely accepted as the secret to what makes the flavours of live-fire Yakitori methods just so special. So basically, if you’re craving juicy morsels charred and caramelised to perfection (and when are we not) Binchotan’s the best, chuck out the rest.

Of course, hankerings of the grill variety are not the only ones Charcoal Charcoal Yakitori is now handling. The cosy 50 pax venue, which joins the smattering of fast-food style eateries fronting Robina Town Centre Drive, also boasts a curated array of Japanese-style sips alongside the specialty eats.

To wash it all down, the bespoke beverage list includes some of the finest brews from across the Pacific on tap, yuzu and peach infused Sake and a curated Japanese Whisky selection.

EAT + DRINK

The good vibes are also flowing plentifully at Charcoal Charcoal Yakitori, whose inviting interior proudly showcases furniture and handcrafted wine racks, repurposed from recycled timber. With the focus on natural materials carried throughout, this friendly neighbourhood noshery really is embracing its wabi-sabi era. Adding to its warmth, wood surfaces are complemented by floaty fabric canopies suspended from the ceiling, while the softly-lit paper lantern pendants infuse the space with ambience a plenty.

An exciting addition to Robina’s eats scene, the charming and top notch Yakitori spot is impressive, but not surprising when you consider the duo’s credentials. Together with the bizsmarts of her other half, who formerly owned several venues abroad, Harper, a Commercial Cookery graduate, is currently also furthering her studies in hospitality. So, these guys are certainly no stranger to slinging tasty eats – and it shows.

On the menu, smoky and succulent grillkissed skewers of Pork Belly and Prawn and Garlic Soy Sauce Spiked Scallops mingle with mouthwatering cuts of marbled Waygu. For those feeling daring, there are also some often overlooked culinary deep cuts to be discovered, such as the Chicken diaphragm, tail, and tender oysters, plus classics like wings and thighs

To complement the seared selection, comforting helpings of 10-hour slow-simmered Ramen, served with rich slices of Pork char siu will certainly be high on rotation with the return of the cooler months.

Whatever you opt for, pair it with a pint of frosty Asahi and you’re golden! Kanpai!

Inspired by the Sanskrit word ‘Pankti’ –which represents the ritual of converging over food, irrespective of caste or creed, Pangaat has taken up residence in Mudgeeraba’s

historical Railway Street strip. A joint venture by owners Rokeya Rima and Akash Sarkar, the duo selected the township for its tight-knit community feel, whilst maintaining a close enough proximity to handle the hankerings of the city’s heaving central suburbs.

Now sharing a ‘hood with the likes of Anekawa, Lenny Pizzeria and Junior’s Deli –Mudgeeraba’s latest flavour purveyor sure is in some excellent company.

Something that, we can only surmise is no accident, since Akash brings some hefty culinary chops to the role of Head Chef – racking up some ten years in high-end restaurants across the globe before deciding to pour all that expertise into Pangaat. For his first solo venture, Chef Akash’s vision was to create a venue that ‘encompassed the essence of India by combining tradition with contemporary touches’.

This ethos is also evident in the space, with the pair opting for a pared back, light and cosy fit out that still embraces all the welcoming village-vibes of its locale. The

EAT + DRINK

menu, meanwhile, tikka’s all the boxes – with a showcase of Akash’s ‘sophisticated cooking with the simplicity of style’, that offers an extensive and tantalising mix of Indian dishes to pick between.

The specialties here are plentiful, so we’d suggest gathering your crew for a good, ‘ole fashioned share-style feast. And if this sounds like your jam, or chutney, rather – the Chef’s Special Banquet Menu is where it’s at, where you can tuck in to a curation of mouthwatering classics such as Onion Bhaji and Tandoori Chicken Tikka sans pre-dinner mental gymnastics.

Or perhaps you and your crew prefer to go rogue with the classic, choose-your-ownadventure style feast, piling the table with a haphazard mix of fragrant, communal plates like Malai Kofta and Cauliflower brazule alongside staples like Butter chicken and Vindaloo lamb Mmmm, our tastebuds are already tingling at the thought… (better grab some Raita, just in case).

The artfully crafted cocktails also offer plenty of choice, though if we absolutely must pick one, the Ink Gin and lavender syrup-based Velvet Sour is as pretty as they come… and keep them coming, please and thank you.

Or maybe we’ll throw in a mango-infused Mumbai Margarita finished with chilli-salt rim, for good measure… they say variety is the spice of life, after all.

Open: Wednesday 5pm – late Thursday to Sunday 12pm to 2.30pm & 5pm – late Monday-Tuesday Closed

READY, SET, RIIDE

RIIDE is revving up the car sharing game on the GC.

Feeling frustrated with the limited options of alternative transportation on the GC? Then buckle up because we’re about to take you on a ride. Or RIIDE… the trailblazing app raising the bar on our transportation game with the Gold Coast’s first all-inclusive A to B carshare service.

Tram, train, bus and even our faithful HOPO ferry… when it comes to getting around without a set of wheels on the GC, sure – technically speaking we might have more transport options than you can poke a go card at. In practical terms, the challenge of going car-free means deciding between convenience, affordability, and efficiency.

RIIDE flips the script on micro-mobility, bringing the convenience of e-bikes and scooters to the world of cars.

Launching early last year, Riide unleashed Australia’s first free-floating car-sharing service upon the Gold Coast – a revolutionary service where anyone over the age of 21 can simply sign up with an app to instantly access a fleet of drive-and-drop vehicles at popular destinations across the coast. Unlock the freedom to roam from Surfers

to Cooly and beyond with RIIDE’s A to B car sharing. Forget taxi fares –pay by the minute for the ultimate flexibility.

Shaking up the GC scene with an affordable and easy car rental alternative, the concept is a breath of fresh air in more ways than one. Users are afforded all the convenience and perks of a personal vehicle whilst skipping the cons, might we add…we’re looking at you insurance renewal – insert whole page of dollar signs here.

Benefits extend to the environment too. The RIIDE fleet exclusively employs new (no older than 2021) hybrid vehicles, which offer a whopping 8L/100km saving compared to the average 11.6L/100km petrol usage for passenger vehicles in Queensland.

Excitingly, the service means those of us without wheels are no longer left high and ‘drive’ choosing between the lesser of two evils – that is, the confines of our ye olde transport network or exxy rideshare services (or worse, taking the trusty foot falcon).

Now surely all this convenience must come at a cost, right? Well, we’re revved to report

44 | insidegoldcoast.com.au
STAY + PLAY

that the RIIDE service ‘wheely’ does stack up when it comes to affordability, too.

When compared with ridesharing for example, RIIDE comes in about half the price, plus there’s no getting caught off guard by pesky surcharges. But there’s more… fuel is included. Cha Ching!

The RIIDE carshare model is also completely contact-free via your phone, which provides flexible access to cars 24/sevs – meaning you can officially skip that whole rigamarole of old school style car rentals, once and for all. Sayonara cumbersome and costly car hire process, we won’t miss you in the slightest.

Once your errands, side quest, road trip, sightseeing et al. is done for the day (or week, whatever, RIIDE’s chill like that) – simply return the car to one of the parking zones across the Coast at a time and place convenient to you… and not the other way around (not naming any names… *cough* traditional car rental services).

All of this while also avoiding a maintenance list a mile long, aka tyres, fuel, insurance, parking… y’know, all that car-owning (Honda) jazz that adds up fast… which might just be our favourite part. RIIDE really is giving us the keys to allll the fuss-free perks of a private vehicle, here, huh.

Ready to take RIIDE for a spin? To get in on the all-inclusive, affordable, and sustainable action, just download the app, register and drive.

Good news, car free crew – looks like day trips are officially back on the table. So as Nollsy once said (scream-sang, technically) –let’s riiiide.

BRR,

IT’S COLD IN HERE, MUST BE SOME ICEBAR IN THE ATMOSPHERE Surfers just scored the coolest new bar.

Bit chilly, innit? – said absolutely no Gold Coaster, ever. That is, until the ‘brrrrand’ new and incredibly cool experience, IceBar Surfers swanned into town – an immersive, winter wonderland themed bar made entirely of ice!

Serving ice-cold sips and sub-zero ambience, year-round – the Gold Coast’s new glacial-inspired watering hole is quite literally set to become one of the coolest destinations this far south of the equator. Constructed with a whopping 44 tonnes of ice, the bar has forgone the furniture entirely, inviting you to rug up and chillax amongst the array of frosty, hand-carved fixtures – from the bar right down to the chairs…. A butt-clenchinducing concept indeed, if it weren’t for the toasty winter garb they kindly also include #PraiseBe.

Rivalling the higher end of Antarctica’s averages, the bar’s rather brisk -10°C ambient temps often offer an ‘ice’-watering 45 degree difference between the inside and out. Punters can choose to instantaneously cool off with their choice of shot (which come served in actual ice glasses) chilled cocktails, or mocktails… which brings a whole new meaning to drinks served ‘on ice’.

Though the interactive IceBar encounter isn’t strictly an adults-only expedition. Accompanied mini me’s are also welcome to tag along for their share of icy shenanigans, with a selection of frosty-themed fun and games – such as an air arctic hockey table.

Only the second of its kind in Aus, the Surfers iteration is a sequel to Melbourne’s OG IceBar experience, which has been putting the the ‘nip’ in nippy for some 17 years now. Like all the best ideas, the inspiration to expand the igloo-vibing concept from down south came to the owners over a couple of cold ones. As fate would have it, the owners saw the light, spied the ‘for lease’ sign, after venturing by Surfers to wet their whistles (obviously) whilst in town for a tourism conference.

EAT +DRINK

For this crew of ‘chill’ seeking entrepreneurs the location proved too enticing an opportunity to expand their icecapades – just footsteps from the tram stop.

And just quietly – while we will always have a soft spot for the incredible array of attractions this grand city of ours is known for – when a new contender appears combining a novel experience for all ages with one of our favourite pastimes – sipping cocktails, it’s guaranteed to earn itself anything but a frosty reception.

The unforgettable sip session lasts for 45 minutes, which begins by donning the provided arctic gear, before stepping inside to be greeted by the glacial conditions. Surrounded by 130kg slabs of wall-to-wall ice, soak in the enchanting, surf-themed ice sculptures, which took the expert carving crew almost two (frostbiteinducing, no doubt) weeks to complete.

Colour us impressed, but it’s time we addressed the woolly mammoth in the room –the sips! The drinks menu is split into a compact selection of classic and winter-themed signature cocktails – such as the espresso-infused Snowstorm and the delightful Northern Lights made with gin, peach schnapps and pea flower. Which we will happily throw down like ‘snow’ body’s business.

Surfers newest must-do is open 11–11 daily, meaning we can now swing by and blast-chill ourselves with the most refreshing margs in town and a few face-numbing rounds of Connect Four anytime the hankering/urge to escape the humidity hits. Which, basically sounds like paradise anytime!

A MARKET THAT’S SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST STANDARD

The Standard Market Company brings the boujee to boutique shopping experience.

They call it The Standard Market Company but we’d say they’re anything but standard. In fact, we’d say they’re more along the lines of un-pea-lievable (see what we did there). The Brickworks location has been a favourite among locals since 2006 when the team burst onto the Gold Coast grocery scene, bringing a boutique shopping experience that put the big guys to shame. With a background in the fruit and veg spanning four decades, founders Darren and Nikki Frame saw a space that no one was nailing – bringing the highest quality, fresh produce to customers. And there The Standard Market Company that we know and love was born.

Thankfully for us, Darren and Nikki didn’t stop at just fruit and veg, it has quickly become a one stop shop with the whole hog on offer including a butcher (see what we did there), deli, bakery and gelato to sweeten the deal.

Darren’s passion for produce quickly saw them rally up the best bakers and pastry chefs the city had to offer, along with expert butchers to bring one of the biggest ranges of handcrafted sweet treats and meats with specialty produce you can’t find anywhere else. If you’re a charcuterie lover, the deli will delight the senses with cheeses, cured meats the biggest range of hand-marinated olives we’ve ever seen – if you like a little kick we’re big fans of the chilli kind – or a gourmet bbq chook to take the stress out of meal prep #fancy.

So when it comes to sourcing the finest ingredients, creating gourmet delights, and providing a one-stop haven for food lovers, I suppose you could say The Standard Market Company has been doing a berry, berry good job of it.

Now we’re the first ones to say that all that shopping is hungry work, so luckily for you there’s also some delish dining options to help squash the cravings. This family-owned gem

EAT + DRINK

has some of our favourite foodie spots nestled alongside them – hello Pearl & Ash – for a postshopping pitstop. Or Quench your thirst at their iconic juice bar where you can grab a green juice because #health and a quick bite because we get it, you’re busy.

In the name of being a family affair, Darren and Nikki have rounded up their troops with the whole fam having special roles across the business, you’ll find Darren on the floor five days a week, while Nikki keeps the back of house running smoothly and the kids lending a helping hand across all areas of the business.

But they’re more than just a GC success story, the Frame’s have expanded across two more locations in Brisbane at James St Markets and of course Gasworks in Newstead, the Frame’s employ more than 170 Gold Coaster’s keeping it local and we love to see it.

Darren and Nikki’s mission is simple: to set the standard in food retail by providing customers with the highest quality gourmet foods and ingredients, coupled with friendly and knowledgeable customer service – sounds like a winning combo to us.

It’s not just the place to stock up on your favourite fare, it’s a testament to the dedication and passion of a family that’s been serving the Gold Coast’s foodie needs for decades. If you’re looking for the best, freshest, and most delicious ingredients, The Standard Market Company is the only place to go.
