With four set menus – Akane, Murasaki, Sakura, and Vegetarian – plus a kids’ option, you’ll be treated to sizzling hotplates, expert knife skills, and a flavour explosion in every bite. We’re talking beef tenderloin with sesame yakiniku sauce, Hokkaido scallops with truffle soy butter, and, of course, a generous side of fried rice and ikura caviar. The only downside? I GOT 94 PROBLEMS BUT MY MATCHA AIN’T ONE Palm Beach’s ’94 is stealing hearts (and sips).
I
f you’ve been ‘oat’ and about in Palm Beach lately, you may have noticed a fresh new café making waves, and it’s got matcha lovers and coffee fiends in a frenzy. Enter ’94, the brainchild of Ahmet Taskin, a man who took his love of matcha and morning munches and is turning it into the community hub to end all community hubs. Since opening its doors at the end of February, ’94 has already set itself apart from the pack. Visually, it blends Japanese café influences (a nod to their – and our – matcha obsession) with a vintage bar aesthetic,

creating a warm, inviting atmosphere where you can park yourself for hours. Whether you’re sipping a chai matcha on the outdoor seating or cozying up inside with a dark blanc, the experience is as good as the menu. And speaking of the menu, let’s talk drinks. Forget mass-produced syrups and artificial nonsense – ’94 makes all their syrups in-house. The result? Completely original, preservative-free, flavour-packed creations like their signature Salted Caramel Matcha, Dark Blanc, Chai Matcha, and Strawberry and Blueberry Matcha (made from fresh fruit, thank you very much). They’re also serving up Open Toasts and Toasties, Homemade Banana Bread and Muffins, and more so you can muncha while you matcha. But what truly sets ’94 apart isn’t just the food and drinks – it’s the people, with Ahmet and his team building a loyal community from the ground up. Pre ’94, marketgoers will already be familiar with Ahmet’s eats and sips sorcery through Oatopia, the prequal to his latest venture. The humble oat-based breakfast stall, which also sold matcha sourced straight from the motherland, quickly acquired a stage-fiveclinger following. Locals wanted a bricks and mortar spot that served up his magnificent matcha on the reg so in true entrepreneurial fashion, Ahmet delivered. The end goal for ‘94 is not just to be a meeting point for parched and peckish locals, but basically to become the social heartbeat of Palmy. Besides the obvious (sensational sips and great grub), forward-thinking Ahmet has plans to start a running club, swimming club, and more. You name it – he and team will probably club it. So how qualified is Ahmet to achieve such an ambitious feat? Very. With six years of hospitality experience (four of those spent perfecting his coffee craft), plus a Master’s Degree in Marketing focusing on food waste and green marketing, he was born for this. But credit where it’s due, as his wife also played a strategic role in the making of ’94 (behind every great man….). After Ahmet left his last gig, she encouraged him not to find another job and yes, you read that right. She wanted him to focus his energy entirely on launching his own biz and on behalf of the GC, we salute you. So, if you haven’t already, get yourself to ’94 and experience it for yourself. Whether you’re after a mother of a matcha, killer cup of coffee, bite to eat, or just a natter with a fellow friendly local, one thing’s for sure – you’ll be back. And probably joining a club while you’re at it.

Cowboys has finally moseyed its way across the ditch from New Zealand to set up shop in Surfers Paradise, bringing a whole lot of wild west spirit with it. This juggernaut has been winning over Aussie tourists in Queenstown for the past 20 years, so naturally they figured it was high time to ride into Australia’s most famous tourist stomping grounds. Cowboys has only recently

If you have a hankering for American eats in a venue decked-out with all things cowboy, saddle up folks coz this is your kinda place. The visionary build by Woodstar Construction and Macintosh Harris heading up interior design delivers an authentic, rustic vibe…with just enough modern flair to keep it Gold Coast cool. Nearly all the décor comes straight outta the US (minus the replica guns and bullets – those are all for show), and the atmosphere feels like a big ol’ slice of country America, whether you’re riding the famous mechanical bull, tipping your hat to the very obliging bar staff, or line dancing on Tuesday nights! Cowboys brings the entertainment in spades too in the form of pool tables, shuffleboards, and electronic dart boards. James, a long-time collector of the Aussie muscle car with a passion as loud as the V8s on display. After years of keeping his dream cars tucked away in a private Gold Coast facility (only to be driven on weekends), James decided it was time to lift the bonnet (pun fully intended) on his ‘as bought’ and resorted collection to let the public have a peek. is rocking a dead-set spot-on replica of the legendary Interceptor parked right out the front like it owns the joint (because, honestly, it kind of does). We’re talking movie-level detail. or nearly a decade of dough-liciousness, 5B2F Bakehouse has been a go-to for Gold Coast locals seeking expertly crafted pastries, crusty sourdough and decadent cakes. Now, the much-loved Chirn Park patisserie has expanded, bringing its signature quality and artistry to Southport with the newly opened 5B2F Ciabatta. The brainchild of renowned South Korean pastry chef Moonsun Yoo, 5B2F Ciabatta is the product of a lifelong love for baking. Growing up in a family steeped in the craft, Moonsun’s passion for the kitchen bloomed

It was during his time as a chef at the Hyatt Seoul that he discovered his true calling as a pastry chef, a specialty that he would bring to our sunny shores, opening his beloved Chirn Park bakehouse in 2016. Driven by a dream of expanding his pastry empire, Moonsun has now made that vision a reality. Tucked away on Davenport Street, 5B2F Ciabatta embraces a more streamlined, takeaway concept while still delivering the same level of terrific taste that has defined the 5B2F name. The focus here? The humble yet versatile sourdough ciabatta, transformed into an array of fresh, flavourful sandwiches. Each day, the bakery turns out a rotating selection of handcrafted ciabatta creations. Tuck into a tangy Reuben with house-made corned beef, sauerkraut, onion and chipotle mayo or the creamy Chicken Sandwich with roasted chicken, sliced apple, brie cheese and chipotle mayo. For something indulgent, the truffle-infused ham and cheese toastie is a standout, with its crispy golden crust and irresistibly gooey centre. There’s also hearty salads on offer, like the

Tucked down a side lane, it was that sweet ceramics studio that always looked so cosy and inviting. But did you know, they’ve since moved into bigger (and dare we say better) space? Dirty Hands regulars would know this, but for those yet to put fingers to clay, let this be your subtle encouragement. Scratch that, the new space can speak for itself. You’ll now find Dirty Hands along West Burleigh Road – only a five mins drive from its old locale. The new space is intimate yet wholly welcoming – filled with wheels, kilns and long

Founder and Head Baker Jérôme Favier has the perfect ‘blend’ of skills, with a resume any baker would be proud of. Jérôme graduated from the typically two-year professional Baker Diploma course in just six months. He then returned to Europe to master traditional artisan methods to produce quality, crafted baked goods, with the intention to come back down under to wow us with his skillz. He spent two years in France, one in Switzerland, plus one in Germany, and this reads like our Contiki tour itinerary circa 2001. Back on the Gold Coast, he enjoyed an eight year stint at Burleigh Baker, where he held the prestigious ‘Master Baker’ post and played a key role in the GC institution’s success story. Jérôme chose the beautiful Tambo location as the village size is similar to his French hometown in Bourgogne. Engaging Shopfit Co for the design, we’re pleased to confirm that from bread to dough, Franquette rocks a French style bakery and bistrot (small café) look and feel. Everything about this gem is warm and inviting, starting with the striking green and
white logo. The roof forms an eye-catching peak, featuring dark wooden panelling and matching weatherboard, contrasting white bifold doors, bare bulb pendant lights, and lots of on-brand green accents. The large windows allow people to see the bakers in action #NoSecretsHere, while patrons are invited to sit and relax under the terrace and on the deck. So what sort of bakery wizardry can we expect to unearth? Firstly, we’re talking more loaf varieties than you can poke a bread stick at, including white, multi, olive, fruit, sandwich, ciabatta, napoleon, spelt, Josephine, miche, and the French bakery staple, baguettes. Or, if you’re not interested in DYI-ing your sanga or baguette at home, hook yourself up with one of Franquette’s freshly prepared sandwiches, toasted sandwiches or baguettes. Overflowing with THE most scrumptious fillings (think European influenced deli meats, cheeses, and other quintessentially Euro ingredients), the photos alone induce a drool reflex. There’s also an assortment of rolls, scrolls, and pasty-infused deliciousness. Harry’s Dining, an amazing noshery located in the G.O.R.G over 65s village Esprit de Vie in Mermaid Waters, is dripping in style and chef-kissed eats and sips. Loaded with all the aesthetic and palate friendly goodness you’d expect from any ontrend restaurant, this joint is wowing patrons of every vintage. Whether you’re popping in for brekky, settling in for a long lunch, or gathering the

Led by the culinary wizard himself, Head Chef Jason Wood (or as he is known, ‘Yes Chef’ because who’s going to argue with a man who’s cooked on cruise ships?), Harry’s Dining serves up more than just great food. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with an atmosphere that’s as warm as a Sunday roast (and yeah, they do that – keep reading!) and as inviting as a freshly poured cocktail (yep, plenty of those too). They were aiming for a local feel full of friends and family and after visiting this warm hug of a venue, we can confirm we may never leave (do they offer sleepovers?). Back to the food, let’s talk about the signature feed: the Humpty Doo Barramundi. Perfectly grilled and dressed to impress with gremolata, pickled ginger, and a luxurious champagne cream, it’s a dish that’s ‘reeling in’ rave reviews.
And if you time your visit right, you can score a deal on ‘Barramonday’ (get it – barra on a Monday) because srsly, Mondays should have at least one redeeming quality. Of course, Harry’s Dining knows variety is the spice of life, which is why every day is a reason to return. In addition to their sensational menu, there are daily specials beyond Barramondays, and they go a little something like this: Tuesdays are all about beef pie, on Wednesdays they wear pink (joking – they serve all-time burgers), and on Thursdays, take your taste buds on a world tour exploring cuisines around the globe. Fridays are all about fish and chips, Saturdays are for steak lovers, and Sundays? Obvs, they’re reserved for the ultimate trad fam staple; Harry’s EPIC roast dinner. Whilst the specials are off the chain good, the sky is the limit because the standard menu is stacked with crowd-pleasers for AM, PM and PMM (post post meridiam -aka night) with every meal feeling like a greatest hits album – back-to-back bangers.
