Aloha!

Waikiki Starlight Luau Thursday Excursion

It is our great honor and pleasure to welcome each of you to the heart of Waikiki, Honolulu, for our muchanticipated 2024 Annual Conference. This year, we gather in the warm Hawaiian sun to celebrate, learn, and grow together under the encompassing theme of "Practice." "Practice" is powerful. It represents the dedication, persistence, and continuous improvement that are the cornerstones of both personal and professional excellence. In the spirit of this theme, our conference is designed to provide a platform for sharing innovative ideas, exploring new opportunities, and enhancing our skills through practical experiences. Throughout this conference, we will engage in various interactive and thought-provoking lessons, all aimed at enriching our understanding and application of practice in our respective fields. We'll offer valuable insights and real-world examples of how consistent practice can lead to extraordinary outcomes. But practice is not all work. Practice is play! We are in one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and I encourage you to take some time to enjoy the breathtaking scenery, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality that Waikiki and Honolulu have to offer. Whether it's a sunrise surf session, a tranquil walk on the beach, or exploring the island's rich history, make sure to immerse yourself in the unique experiences around you. As we embark on this exciting journey of learning and exploration, remember that the practice we discuss and engage in during this conference is not just for today or tomorrow but a continuous process that will propel us towards greater heights in all aspects of our lives. We are thrilled to have you all here. Let's make the most of our time together and turn the concept of "practice" into a transformative force that will guide us in the year ahead and beyond. Mahalo for your commitment, enthusiasm, and participation.

The Institute of Transactional Philosophy is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization devoted to the continual development and education of transactionalism. Our mission is bringing the research, study and applied learning of Transactional Philosophy to a global audience. Our aim is to foster the adoption of the philosophy of transactionalism so that people can think and act together. We envision a world embodying an integrated worldview of cooperation, participation and help. We believe that transactionalism is sufficiently robust to address what ails us the most, which is the fragmented and isolated ways in which the world operates today. In 2023, The Institute of Transactional Philosophy drafted its strategic plan that charts its future. The work of the Institute is focused in promoting transactionalism through three approaches: Developing Philosophical Propositions that make transactionalism accessible. Cultivating a network of Interlinked Ecologies who practice and value transactional approaches. Delivering Powerful Learning Experiences through various mediums. We invite you to participate with the Institute as a member, a board director, a volunteer, as a donor or as a scholar. To become a member, please use the QR code below. For all other inquiries, please contact a board director or email us at info@transactionalism.org.

Influential U is the commercial application of an entire body of work that is solidly grounded in the philosophy of transactionalism. The relationship between Influential U and the Institute is an important one. While many philosophies shape how societies think, the intersection of philosophy and commerce is rare, if not altogether frowned upon by academia. As such, the Institute is working to explore the philosophy unfettered by a concern for commerce, while Influential U devotes itself to teaching the world how to transact, together, with competence. The research done through the Institute will continue to contribute to us all.

Practice as Play "Now what we know from research is that it takes 400 repetitions of an act or a learning skill, 400 times, to get one new synapse. Or -would you like to know an option - there's an option. OR, 12 repetitions with joy and laughter and you get a synapse because there's a release of a chemical dopamine." — Dr. Karyn Purvis, Institute of Child Development In the quest for business success, the concept of play often takes a back seat to more 'serious' strategies. However, as we delve into "practice as play," we'll explore how integrating play into business practices can be a game-changer, literally and figuratively. This understanding can revolutionize how we approach business challenges, consequential offers, and our fitness to do more with less resources.

Shall we play? When technologist Luis von Ahn was building the popular language-learning platform Duolingo, he faced a big problem: Could an app designed to teach you something ever compete with addictive platforms like Instagram and TikTok? He explains how Duolingo harnesses the psychological techniques of social media and mobile games to get you excited to learn — all while spreading access to education across the world.

Embrace Guidance

The Role of Openness and Humility in Achieving Expertise In the quest for expertise, the role of mentorship is often pivotal. However, its effectiveness hinges on one's attitude towards learning, particularly openness and humility. Understanding and bridging these differences is crucial in a world where generational perspectives on mentorship vary widely. Are you coachable? Notes:

Practice

What is Deliberate Practice? Influential U has traditionally characterized Deliberate Practice by five essential and necessary elements: 1. Designed specifically to improve performance 2. Repeated a lot 3. Feedback is continuously available 4. Highly demanding mentally, and 5. Not much fun The term “Deliberate Practice” is defined in the recommended book Talent is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else by Geoff Colvin. How does Colvin define Masterful Practice?

17

Masterful Practice Masterful Practice employs techniques that maximize learning and improvement. We’ll add the element of play a bit later. This kind of actionable practice can be summarized as follows: 1. Well-Defined, Specific Goals: Deliberate practice is always goal-oriented. The goals should be expertly directed, specific, and clear, not vague or general. This focus helps in directing the practice and measuring progress. 2. Focused Practice: It involves intense and concentrated practice sessions. During deliberate practice, one should give full attention to the task at hand, minimizing distractions and avoiding mindless repetition. 3. Feedback: Immediate and qualified feedback is a critical component of deliberate practice. This feedback allows individuals to understand their performance and identify areas for improvement. 4. Stepping Outside of One's Comfort Zone: Deliberate practice involves practicing at the edge of one's abilities, constantly pushing beyond the comfort zone. It's about tackling tasks or skills that are just out of reach and thus require stretching one's current abilities. 5. Developing a Routine: Consistency is key in deliberate practice. It involves developing a regular, ideally daily, practice routine that is maintained over long periods. This consistency helps in building and refining the skills progressively. © Influential U

You might want to evaluate the following factors: 1. Credentials and Education 2. Specialized Knowledge and Experience 3. Reputation and Reviews 4. Up-to-Date Knowledge 5. Communication Skills 6. Availability and Accessibility 7. Alignment with Need 8. Ethical Standing

Transact for Expertise Finding and engaging an expert for mentorship or guidance can be a transformative step in your personal or professional development. Here are some strategies to help you in this process: Identify Your Needs and Goals: Clearly define what you are looking for in an expert. Consider the specific skills, knowledge, or experience you want to gain. Set clear objectives for what you hope to achieve through this engagement. Know your aims. Research Potential Experts: Look for professionals who are well-respected in the field you’re interested in. This could include authors of influential books, speakers at industry conferences, or leaders of renowned organizations. Use professional networks like LinkedIn, industry forums, or professional associations to find potential mentors. Utilize Professional Networks: Tap into your existing networks for referrals. Personal recommendations can be very valuable. Attend industry events, workshops, or seminars where you can meet and network with potential experts. Engage with their content (like blog posts, webinars, or social media posts) to start building a connection. Prepare a Value Proposition: When reaching out, be clear about what you’re asking for and why. Experts are more likely to respond if they see a well-thought-out request. Consider what you can offer in return. This could be anything from a fresh perspective to helping them with a project. Contact Them Professionally: Reach out via a professional email or through a professional networking platform. Be concise, respectful, and professional in your communication. Introduce yourself, explain why you are interested in their expertise, and be clear about what kind of guidance or mentorship you are seeking. Be Flexible and Respectful of Their Time: Understand that experts are often busy. Be flexible with scheduling and respectful of the time they can offer. Prepare for meetings with them in advance to make the most of the time. Consider Formal Mentorship Programs: Some organizations offer formal mentorship programs. Check if your workplace, alma mater, or professional associations you belong to offer such opportunities. Engage in Continuous Learning: Show that you are committed to learning and growing. Experts are more likely to invest time in someone who demonstrates enthusiasm and a proactive approach to their development. Maintain the Relationship: Once you have established a connection, nurture it. Keep them updated on your progress and continue to seek their advice as needed. Express gratitude and recognize their contribution to your growth. Remember, engaging an expert is not just about receiving guidance; it’s also about building a mutually reciprocal professional relationship. Your approach should be thoughtful, considerate, and tailored to the individual expert you wish to engage with.
