LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Fun in the Sun

une has always been a special month to me, but for a mostly silly reason: It’s the month when I feel like I can finally put away my winter coat! In May, we start to get a taste of warmer weather. But May in the Midwest is a tease, and the month still has too many fluctuating temperatures to not have a coat handy. But June? Bye bye, jackets and coats… at least until September.

No coats, lots of sun, lazy days, loose schedules — that’s what June is about to me. It’s also about packing in as much fun as possible, as it’s the start of my kids’ summer break. At this point of summer break, the road is wide open to the possibilities, and the responsibilities of school are nowhere in sight. It’s time to focus on fun!

This issue is focused on fun, too. SO much summer fun! Throughout the magazine, you’ll find ideas for places to go and things to experience around southwest Ohio with your family to make this a summer to remember. From splash pads to animal encounters, and outdoor festivals to indoor activities, let this be your guide to filling out those summer bucket lists.

Have a wonderful June!

Dad jokes actually empower kids to become better adults! Researchers found that a dad’s willingness to embarrass himself repeatedly subconsciously teaches kids to be OK with awkwardness. So when does a dad joke become a dad joke? When it becomes apparent!

Little Miami Scenic Trail

Running more than 78 miles, starting in Springfield and ending on the east side of Cincinnati, the Little Miami Scenic Trail is the fourth-longest paved trail in the United States.

Abundant in recreational options, visitors can take their pick. Land options included bicycling, hiking, rollerblading, backpacking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing by permit in the winter. Because this is a riverside trail, aquatic options on the Little Miami River include fishing and paddlesports like canoeing and kayaking. An Ohio fishing license is required for everyone 16 and older.

From US Route 50 and Wooster Lane to the end of the Loveland section, the Scenic Trail also picks up part of the 1,440-mile Buckeye Trail that runs from Lake Erie to the Ohio River.

Pop In & Out

Because of its length, the Little Miami Scenic Trail offers lots of access points along the way. John Bryan and Caesar Creek State Parks are reachable from the trail, along with the Fort Ancient

State Historical Site. In Corwin, there is a staging area with parking, restrooms and picnic tables.

Popular access points include Loveland, where locals affectionately call this part of the trail the “Loveland Bike Trail,” and claim it is the most active stop on the trail with parking, restrooms, picnic tables and a quaint town to explore. Other trailside stops include Oregonia, Morrow, South Lebanon, Fosters, Miamiville and Milford. Stops within the Great Parks of Hamilton County include the Avoca Trailhead, Little Miami Golf Center, Bass Island and Otto Armleder Memorial Park.

22 PLACES for Cool Indoor Fun

Escape the heat and weather at these indoor hotspots.

When going to the splash pad and pool doesn't help you cool off from the hot weather, or a sudden rain shower ruins your outdoor plans, it's time to have fun indoors. Luckily, there are many indoor activities around southwest Ohio to keep your family entertained. Take a break from the heat and unpredictable weather, and enjoy these cool indoor options!

MUSEUMS

and SkyZone in Dayton are great places to be active, as is Get Air Trampoline Park in West Chester and Huber Heights, and Urban Air, with locations in Cincy and Fairfield Township.

BOWLING

Bowling is a great rainy-day activity! Try out duckpin bowling — the same game, but with smaller pins and balls — at Pins Mechanical Co. , with locations at Over the Rhine in Cincinnati and in Dayton, or at On Par Bar in Beavercreek. For an elevated bowling experience with food and other games, visit Scene75 in Cincy. And don’t forget about the Kids Bowl Free program that’s available during the summer. Sign up your kids at kidsbowlfree.com, and they can bowl all summer long at participating locations, which include multiple bowling alleys around southwest Ohio.

There are lots of museums to explore around the area! Enjoy a children’s museum, science center, natural history museum, planetarium, observatory and zoo all under one roof at Boonshoft Museum in Dayton. Explore the fun side of science at COSI in Columbus, and learn about living history at the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati. If you’re looking for something different, the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force is perfect for all ages. Or the Taft Museum of Art has free Family Sundays on select Sundays throughout the year. And, of course, the Cincinnati Museum Center is always a great place to visit, with its children’s museum, history museum, science center and more all in one fun place.

Parlor Doughnuts

ever heard of Parlor Doughnuts? That’s because this craft doughnut and coffee shop is relatively new on the scene, opening its first location in Evansville, Indiana, in 2019. The dream for this unique shop came as Darrick Hayden traveled with his son Noah’s band for a few years. Each stop became an opportunity to sample the best local doughnuts and coffee.

Doughnut Varieties

Parlor Doughnuts utilizes the style from the fanciest room in the house and offers guests a hard-to-choose-just-one menu of its signature layered doughnuts, very similar to cronuts. Layered doughnuts come in a wide variety, including maple bacon, sandy beach, carnival, French toast, cookies ‘n cream, campfire, churro, bourbon caramel, blueberry hill, strawberry shortcake, dreamsicle, raspberry pistachio and lemon bar. Not willing to try the fancy flavors? You can opt for the Plain Jane. Have dietary needs? Parlor offers guests keto varieties and a vegan/gluten-free option with customizable glazes.

A box of mini doughnuts offers smaller bites. And Fido can be happy with a doggy doughnut.

From drip to latte, espresso and cortado, there’s a coffee for everyone. Heartier appetite options include breakfast sandwiches and tacos.

Expanding

Parlor Doughnuts is currently open with one location on the east side of Cincinnati and two locations near Columbus. Their website says they will be expanding into more locations, including Dayton.
