LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Making the Holidays Count
WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE
’ve never really been that parent who laments that her children are growing up too fast. No, I don’t want time to stop. No, I don’t wish they were still babies. Instead, every birthday that has passed, every milestone that has been met, has filled me with glee. In my mind, I’m thinking, “Hooray! Success! We’ve made it this far! You’re turning into amazing, independent human beings right before my eyes!”
I
That is, until the other day.
I was reminded that there are only four more Christmases until my oldest son is off to college. Four. That’s less than the number of fingers on my hand! Do you know how quickly four years pass? It will go by quickly, I’m sure of it.
It’s not like I want time to stop. No, not at all. But with four years seared into my brain, I’ve decided that I need to take advantage of these last few childhood Christmases and make them special. One way that we’re making the holidays special is by doing
ALL of the holiday things, for the foreseeable future. This year, as of this writing, my family and I have checked at least three holiday events off our list, with more to come.
I highly suggest creating a checklist of the things that you want to do this holiday season. That’s what I did. And that’s why we created a literal checklist for you with “Holiday Fun Checklist” on page 12, which features some of the best family-friendly holiday events happening around town. Of course, your family probably has its own favorites and traditions. But if you need some ideas for what to do to take advantage of this holiday season, our list will give you a good jump start.
Wishing you a happy December, filled with making intentional memories with your family!

Arcade Legacy
WORDS BY PAM FREEMAN
or more than 16 years, Arcade Legacy has been a staple for Cincinnati gamers at three locations. While most arcades are a thing of the past, they’ve never gone away completely. Instead, they’ve evolved into specialized retro arcades and family entertainment centers. Arcade Legacy has evolved, too. Three locations have now consolidated into one mega location in Sharonville, with over 15,000 square feet located directly off the I-75 exit at Sharon Road.
When You Go
Arcade Legacy’s mega location is packed with arcade games, pinball, classic (think NES) and current gaming console stations, bring-your-own-console stations, giant projection screens for Nintendo Switch, PS5/4 games and a Rock Band setup. There is also a fully stocked media store. In short, if you like video games, Arcade Legacy is a must-visit!
Admission is $5 for one hour or $10 unlimited, with kids younger than 3 free with adult admission. For every five unlimited paid admissions, the sixth person gets in free. A monthly pass is available for $50 and gets you one half-price guest pass. Hours are 2 p.m. through midnight Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday, noon to 1 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday noon to 1 a.m. The arcade is closed on Tuesday. Friday nights are family nights with the whole family (mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, and up to six kids living in the same house, with the exception of grandma and grandpa) getting in for $30.

TRAVEL Winter Staycation Fun
Enjoy family adventures close to home this season.
WORDS BY RICHARD CHACHOWSKI
or many, winter can be a time of adventurous vacations abroad, allowing for a momentary escape from the plummeting temperatures of the season. For many others, though, the new season can provide a welcome opportunity to explore some of the unique features of your local area. Whether enjoying a festive lights display or exploring an idyllic indoor museum, a staycation can be just as fun — if not more so — than actually getting out of the state for your next trip. With that in mind, there are plenty of great things to do in Ohio, including some of the following standout activities for you and your family.
Indoor Thrills
Anyone familiar with Midwestern weather patterns knows that Ohio winters can be a bit on the chillier side. That said, it’s probably a good (and entirely sensible) idea to remain indoors during the coldest months of the year, specifically taking the opportunity to look at winter activities with an overhead roof and
a thermostat cranked to the highest temperature possible.
Fortunately, there remain plenty of worthwhile places and activities capable of delighting the whole family during the winter season. Put your short game to the test at Bunker Hill Golf Course in Medina, an indoor mini golf course with 18 holes and a full-swing golf simulator. For those with a lead foot, take your family on a high-octane adventure courtesy of High Voltage Indoor Karting, also in Medina, a first-rate go-kart course fit for thriller seekers across the state.
While some people might be escaping to warmer climates for the season, you don’t necessarily need to be beneath a swaying palm tree in the Caribbean to splash around with your loved ones. With a total of five indoor waterparks throughout the state, Ohio is home to some truly fantastic aquatic adventures, including Sandusky’s Kalahari Resort and Belleville’s Splash Harbor
Of course, winter also marks the peak days of hockey season, with the Nationwide Arena hosting plenty of action-packed games in Columbus. The stadium regularly holds games for the Columbus Blue Jackets, along with the minor league organizations Cleveland Monsters, Toledo Walleye and Cincinnati Cyclones.
Culture + History
There are lots of remarkable sights of historical, artistic and cultural significance within the state. In Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Art Museum features thousands of fascinating exhibits dating back as far as 6,000 years into humanity’s past. And the Cincinnati Museum Center is home to five centers in one: Cincinnati History Museum, Museum of Natural History & Science, Robert D. Lindner Family Omnimax Theater, Cincinnati History Library and Archives, Duke Energy Children's Museum and Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust and Humanity Center.
Learn about Cincinnati’s deep ties to African American history at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, which
boasts some of the most detailed (and harrowing) stories of the Underground Railroad. Likewise, the National Afro-American Museum & Cultural Center in Wilberforce offers tons of historical artifacts rooted in African American culture, from paintings and manuscripts to other standout relics and artifacts.
Outdoor Adventures
When cabin fever strikes, it’s time to head outside. The area has no shortage of excellent outdoor activities perfect for those seeking to reconnect with nature.
At Perfect North Slopes in nearby Lawrenceburg, Indiana, guests can partake in picturesque skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing adventures suitable for visitors of every age. For those interested in other winter activities, you can also look into ice skating in Cincinnati’s Fountain Square or the ice rink located inside Dayton’s RiverScape MetroPark
Enjoy Unique Winter Activities
While there’s lots to see and do throughout Ohio on a year-round basis, it’s worth mentioning just how many wondrous activities there are within the state that are inherently tied to the holidays.
At the Cincinnati Zoo, visitors can marvel at the park’s festive Holiday Lights display, many of which are modeled after the zoo’s most famous animal residents. Meanwhile, the Magic of Lights at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus features an equally breathtaking display of holiday-themed lights that will dazzle spectators young and old.
Pleasant Ridge Chili Parlor
WORDS BY PAM FREEMAN
Cincinnatians take their chili seriously; a tradition brought and tailored by Greek and Macedonian immigrants that has become synonymous with the Queen City. Greek immigrant Charlie Sedaris — along with his son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Mini Sedaris —started Pleasant Ridge Chili in 1964 with their take on Cincinnati chili, along with a full menu for any taste. Today, it is a neighborhood staple run by their son, Danny, with everything made from scratch and top-secret, family-only recipes for favorites like gravy cheese fries.
When You Go
Pleasant Ridge Chili is open six days a week from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., with a cash-only menu that starts with breakfast served all day, with staples like eggs, toast, hot cakes, omelets and French toast. Throughout the day, chili takes center stage with versions for every taste — cheesy Coney dogs, and chili and spaghetti 3-ways (chili spaghetti topped
with cheese), 4-ways (add beans or onions) or 5-ways (add beans and onions). Fries are also popular and served multiple ways: plain, with cheese, with gravy, with cheese and gravy, with chili, with chili and cheese or with chili, cheese and gravy. Burgers and double-decker sandwiches are a hit, along with specialty sandwiches like gyros, hoagies, fish and grilled cheese. Dinners like pork chops, cube steaks, chicken strips and roast beef with gravy are served with two sides and bread. Sweet desserts like baklava, cheesecake and cream pies round things out.

SURVIVING THE FIRST WEEK OF
Simple strategies to help your child thrive from day one.
he first week of preschool is a huge milestone for both parents and their little ones. Your child is taking their first steps into a classroom full of new faces, routines and adventures. For many parents, it’s both sad and exciting as you watch your child grow up and step out on their own. With a little preparation, you can make this preschool transition smoother for everyone involved!
WORDS
BY LINDSAY CONNER
Make time in your schedule to visit the school before classes begin. Show your child where they’ll hang their backpack, where the bathroom is, and meet their teacher, if you can. Knowing what to expect helps ease those first-day jitters!
Let your child help with simple preparations, like choosing a backpack, outfit or lunch items. This will give them a sense of control during all the new changes. The night before, set a schoolnight routine: lay out clothes, pack the backpack, and review the morning plan. Predictability helps ease nerves and makes mornings smoother!
MORNING ROUTINE
THE DAYS BEFORE
Getting prepared can make all the difference in setting your child up for success. Start talking about preschool several weeks in advance and read books together about starting school to help normalize big emotions. Some books to consider include The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn and Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney.
On the first day, aim to keep things light and positive. Eat breakfast together, offer reassurance and avoid rushing. Remember that your mood sets the tone, and kids can pick up on parental stress quickly. If you’re feeling anxious, take a few deep breaths and remind yourself that your child is learning and growing through this new experience!
Aim to arrive a little early, so your child has time to settle in before the room fills with energy and excitement.
THE DROP-OFF MOMENT
Whether your child runs in without a backward glance or clings tightly to your leg, remember: both reactions are normal. The key is consistency and confidence. Offer a quick, loving goodbye (“I love you! Have a great day, and I’ll see you after story time.”), then leave quickly. If your child cries — and many do — trust the teachers. They’ve seen it all and are skilled at helping kids transition. Most children settle down within minutes of their parents leaving. Ahhh…
HANDLING SEPARATION ANXIETY
It’s perfectly normal for both children and parents to experience separation anxiety. To help kids adjust, bring a comfort object, like a small stuffed animal, family photo or a paper heart tucked into their pocket. For parents, create your own coping strategy: go for a walk, call a friend or treat yourself to
a favorite coffee after dropoff. Give yourself grace; this is a milestone for you, too.
Keep your goodbyes short and consistent each morning. A predictable routine at the same time, with the same phrase and a hug can help your child associate school drop-off with a feeling of confidence and security.
AFTER-SCHOOL CHECK-IN
When you pick up your child, show excitement and ask open-ended questions like, “What was your favorite part of the day?” Celebrate even the smallest victories, like sharing toys, trying snack time, or making a new friend!
Be prepared for tiredness or extra clinginess during the first week. Preschool is a big adjustment! A little extra patience, snuggle time and early bedtimes will go a long way.
The first week may be emo tional, but it marks the start of a wonderful new chapter. With love and consistency, your child will soon thrive — and every goodbye will lead to an even sweeter reunion.
