LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Making the Holidays Count
WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE
’ve never really been that parent who laments that her children are growing up too fast. No, I don’t want time to stop. No, I don’t wish they were still babies. Instead, every birthday that has passed, every milestone that has been met, has filled me with glee. In my mind, I’m thinking, “Hooray! Success! We’ve made it this far! You’re turning into amazing, independent human beings right before my eyes!”
I
That is, until the other day.
I was reminded that there are only four more Christmases until my oldest son is off to college. Four. That’s less than the number of fingers on my hand! Do you know how quickly four years pass? It will go by quickly, I’m sure of it.
It’s not like I want time to stop. No, not at all. But with four years seared into my brain, I’ve decided that I need to take advantage of these last few childhood Christmases and make them special. One way that we’re making the holidays special is by doing
ALL of the holiday things, for the foreseeable future. This year, as of this writing, my family and I have checked at least three holiday events off our list, with more to come.
I highly suggest creating a checklist of the things that you want to do this holiday season. That’s what I did. And that’s why we created a literal checklist for you with “Holiday Fun Checklist” on page 12, which features some of the best family-friendly holiday events happening around town. Of course, your family probably has its own favorites and traditions. But if you need some ideas for what to do to take advantage of this holiday season, our list will give you a good jump start.
Wishing you a happy December, filled with making intentional memories with your family!
That’s the percentage of air that’s in snow. The other 10% is water.

How Celebrations Help Children Learn and Grow
WORDS BY LAURA KRUTY, THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS
he season of celebrations is here!
Social gatherings are undoubtedly fun occasions. But they can also serve a greater purpose, especially in a young child’s life.
Last month, we explained the importance of family traditions. Birthdays, holidays and other celebrations play a similar role when it comes to creating memories, strengthening bonds and developing cultural awareness.
“When children take part in a celebration of any kind, they are usually surrounded by family and friends, people who are important to them,” says Elyse Handel, Early Childhood Education Manager at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “These experiences are critical for young children and their social-emotional development. They can strengthen their identity of self and others in their lives.”
Handel explains that celebrations create a foundation for understanding and feeling a sense of connection. They can help a child begin to learn what community is and how people support and value one another.
It’s also beneficial for children to attend celebrations featuring cultural traditions other than their own, or to see a family celebrating the same holiday as theirs, but in a unique way. This can lead to greater appreciation and respect for those we perceive as different from us, Handel points out.
Celebrating milestones, no matter how small they might be, has significance, too. Completing a year of school, kicking that first soccer goal, or finishing a dance recital are worthy of your acknowledgement and praise, and show a child what focus, confidence, hard work and teamwork can achieve.
A Celebration One Century in the Making
Speaking of milestones, all year long, The Children’s Museum has celebrated a major one: its 100th birthday. The museum was officially established 100 years ago, on Dec. 6, 1925.
Now it’s gearing up for a big birthday hurrah, and everyone is invited!
On Saturday, Dec. 6, join the museum for Birthday Bash, with special activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Don a party hat (one of several giveaways, while supplies last) and take part in games on all levels of the museum. Try to find one of 10 plush hidden Rexes. Be awed by a roving magician, let loose in a dance party, learn about interesting critters in Hedgehog Hannah’s interactive animal show, and sing “Happy Birthday” to the museum. That day, the museum will debut the first item added to the collection in its second century: a largescale artwork by local artist Ashley Nora. You can meet Nora and chat with her about the piece.
There’s so much more in store. Birthday Bash is presented by Purdue University. The museum will remain open until 5 p.m. that day.
Don’t miss this celebration of an Indianapolis icon!

Sensory Holiday Fun Around Indy
Celebrate the holidays with experiences that everyone can enjoy.
etween the crowded stores, flashing lights and unfamiliar smells, the holidays used to send my oldest into sensory overload. The mix of excitement and unpredictability was just too much. But one night we discovered something magical: he loved looking at Christmas lights. That simple realization changed everything. Each Sunday in December, we load up safe snacks, plan a route, and go for a nighttime drive to admire the twinkling displays. It’s become our favorite family tradition. No crowds, no chaos — just calm, cozy joy.
If your family is looking for inclusive, sensory-friendly ways to celebrate this season, here are some local events that might be just the right fit:
Christmas Nights of Lights
Indiana State Fairgrounds, 1202 E. 38th St, Indianapolis Through December 31
Drive through more than a million synchronized lights, all choreographed to holiday music you can play through your car radio. It’s beautiful, accessible, and totally customizable for your family’s comfort level.

Enjoy the museum’s exhibits with lowered lighting, fewer crowds, and sensory tools available at the front desk. Families can take things at their own pace while still soaking up the seasonal spirit.
Museum My Way @ The Children’s Museum
The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, 3000 N Meridian St, Indianapolis December 9 starting at 4 p.m.
Families can explore the museum in a calmer setting with reduced noise and lighting. Trained staff and quiet spaces make it a wonderful option for children who benefit from a more predictable environment.
No matter which experiences you choose, the most important part is finding what feels right for your family. Traditions don’t have to look picture-perfect to be meaningful — they just need to feel authentic and comfortable. So keep those stress levels low, let go of the “shoulds,” and lean into whatever brings the most joy.
Here’s to twinkling lights, cozy car rides, and plenty of happy hot chocolate times ahead.

SURVIVING THE FIRST WEEK OF
Simple strategies to help your child thrive from day one.
he first week of preschool is a huge milestone for both parents and their little ones. Your child is taking their first steps into a classroom full of new faces, routines and adventures. For many parents, it’s both sad and exciting as you watch your child grow up and step out on their own. With a little preparation, you can make this preschool transition smoother for everyone involved!
THE DAYS BEFORE
WORDS BY LINDSAY CONNER
Getting prepared can make all the difference in setting your child up for success. Start talking about preschool several weeks in advance and read books together about starting school to help normalize big emotions. Some books to consider include The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn and Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney.
Make time in your schedule to visit the school before classes begin. Show your child where they’ll hang their backpack, where the bathroom is, and meet their
teacher, if you can. Knowing what to expect helps ease those first-day jitters!
Let your child help with simple preparations, like choosing a backpack, outfit or lunch items. This will give them a sense of control during all the new changes. The night before, set a school-night routine: lay out clothes, pack the backpack, and review the morning plan. Predictability helps ease nerves and makes mornings smoother!
MORNING ROUTINE
On the first day, aim to keep things light and positive. Eat breakfast together, offer reassurance and avoid rushing. Remember that your mood sets the tone, and kids can pick up on parental stress quickly. If you’re feeling anxious, take a few deep breaths and remind yourself that your child is learning and growing through this new experience!
Aim to arrive a little early, so your child has time to settle in before the room fills with energy and excitement.
THE DROP-OFF MOMENT
Whether your child runs in without a backward glance or clings tightly to your leg, remember: both reactions are normal. The key is consistency and confidence. Offer a quick, loving goodbye (“I love you! Have a great day, and I’ll see you after story time.”), then leave quickly. If your child cries — and many do — trust the teachers. They’ve seen it all and are skilled at helping kids transition. Most children settle down within minutes of their parents leaving. Ahhh…
HANDLING SEPARATION ANXIETY
It’s perfectly normal for both children and parents to experience separation anxiety. To help kids adjust, bring a comfort object, like a small stuffed animal, family photo or a paper heart tucked into their pocket. For parents, create your own coping strategy: go for a walk, call a friend or treat yourself to a favorite coffee after dropoff. Give yourself grace; this is a milestone for you, too.
Keep your goodbyes short and consistent each morning. A predictable routine at the same time, with the same phrase and a hug can help your child associate school drop-off with a feeling of confidence and security.
AFTER-SCHOOL CHECK-IN
When you pick up your child, show excitement and ask open-ended questions like, “What was your favorite part of the day?” Celebrate even the smallest victories, like sharing toys, trying snack time, or making a new friend!
Be prepared for tiredness or extra clinginess during the first week. Preschool is a big adjustment! A little extra patience, snuggle time and early bedtimes will go a long way.
The first week may be emotional, but it marks the start of a wonderful new chapter. With love and consistency, your child will soon thrive — and every goodbye will lead to an even sweeter reunion.

New Shoe Day
Helping to empower youth to thrive through new shoes.
n 2021, Indiana-native Casey Crouse founded New Shoe Day, a nonprofit that empowers youth to thrive through a new pair of shoes. To date, it’s served more than 50 different individual organizations and provided 8,000 pairs of shoes to community members in need.
The way the nonprofit works is it partners with local youth organizations to provide children in need with their very own new pair of shoes. The experience thus provides a memorable, exciting and empowering memory of getting a new pair of shoes.
“New Shoe Day exists to solve shoe insecurity across the state for our youth in need by providing them with new pairs of shoes that will empower them to thrive,” says Casey Crouse, founder of New Shoe Day. “We believe that a new pair of shoes can help them build community, it helps them move their bodies, and it can also uplift their mental wellbeing.”
WORDS BY SAMANTHA KUPIAINEN
The nonprofit is youth-focused and provides shoes to children when they first start to walk, all the way through students graduating high school and attending college.
For the most part, New Shoe Day procures almost all of the footwear that they deploy into the community.
“We love receiving donations, but we just don’t really get a lot of those at this point,” Crouse says. “We have a lot of strategic supplier partnerships that allow us to have access to shoe invent-
ory of all different kinds and types and be able to leverage preferred pricing on our end as a nonprofit that buy in volume and has good partnership relationships.”
Crouse explains that the nonprofit is “always on the hunt for new access channels to be able to provide shoes,” and works to ensure they’re “procuring in the best ways possible so that our dollars go farther, because we’re typically buying all the shoes that we use for our impact.”
New Shoe Day’s mission spreads throughout the community mostly through word of mouth from children and families, as well as organizations they’ve partnered with. Its inbound requests are also largely from other organizations that have seen its work and impact in the community, as well as various social media and PR initiatives.
“We get a lot of inbound requests, but we also work with some strategic partners, such as Community Foundations, who are an access point into communities,” Crouse says. “They’re familiar with what we do as a service, and then they have a good understanding of what organizations in the communities might benefit from our services.”
Overall, the feedback for New Shoe Day has been very positive.
“We are solving a need that often goes unaddressed, and we’re solving what is notoriously a complex problem,” Crouse says. “What I mean by that is, there’s a few issues with how to solve shoe insecurity in a moment. What that looks like is, first off, you have to have the resources to do it. Secondly, you've got to have, potentially, depending on the scale with which you're doing it, you've got to have space. Thirdly, which is the one that goes unrecognized most of the time, is that shoe sizing is actually very complicated in the United States. We don't abide by the rest of the world's shoe-sizing standards.”
