Art 6

Students work to understand how the world affects art expression, and art affects the world using the elements of art –line, form, color, value, texture, space, shape, and design principles- balance, movement, pattern, contrast, rhythm, and unity. Students also understand color theory, art history, artists, and cross-curricular applications. Compositions in 2D and creations in 3D artworks encourage students to find expression in various media.

English 6

English 6 provides students with a strong foundation in reading and writing, building off the skills acquired in Lower School. Through novel studies of mentor texts, vocabulary work, and comprehension work, students develop a strong understanding of point of view, author's purpose, theme, and figurative language. This project-based course focuses on students applying their comprehension and writing skills to answer the big questions in the course mentor texts.

History 6

Starting with evidence of early humans and progressing to Enlightenment thinkers and new patterns of emerging economic practices, History 6 will present the evolution and adaptations of humankind that are the foundations of modern civilizations. The course will immerse students in an enriched experience of the ascent of humanity through the stories of human progress and culture combined with intentional project-based learning units and skills development. This project-based course includes creating Greek Murals, a Philosophy Round Table, and projects focused on the Agricultural Revolution, Enlightenment Thinkers, and Explorers. The capstone experience for the Grade 6 class is the immigration simulation that takes place in the spring.

Math 6

Math 6 focuses on four critical areas: ratios, number systems, statistics, and expressions/equations. Students will work to find connections between ratios and rates to whole number multiplication and division. Students will continue to explore their operational understanding of fractions and extend the notion of numbers to the system of rational numbers, including negatives. Students will expand their abilities to write, interpret, and use algebraic expressions and equations while developing an understanding of statistical thinking.

Rhythmic and ear training are fundamental. Students also study the basic elements of music theory, including tempo, chord progression, and other musical terms. Students will be exposed to a varied repertoire of choral literature, including multicultural and classical selections. There will be ample opportunity for group performance and individual vocal growth for beginners and singers with previous experience in a choir.

Physical Education 6

The Physical Education program in grades 6-8 provides an environment where children enjoy actively participating with peers without feeling inferior based on their strengths and weaknesses. Personal fitness, teamwork, and cooperation are achieved through progressive challenges, teamwork, games, and team activities where the primary emphasis is active participation, not skill and drill. The course emphasizes the development of basic motor skills that allow participation in a variety of physical activities. Student learning does not stop in the classroom, as physical education has a blended learning component. Through CREEKnet, students enhance their learning and understanding of health-related topics and the benefits of activities we offer during class.

Possible Course Pathways in the Middle School

All students take English, Science, and History with their grade-level peers. Coursework in Math and Spanish is differentiated by course. Students are placed into the appropriate level of Spanish and Math based on their current class, performance and grades in their current class, teacher recommendation, placement testing and benchmark testing.

Math Pathways

The Middle School Mathematics department aims to develop a strong foundation in basic skills and concepts to prepare students for higher-level math. The Middle School Mathematics program focuses on opportunities for conceptual understanding and fluency with skills and procedures so that they enter Upper School ready to take on more advanced coursework. Students will be placed into the appropriate math course through placement testing, benchmark data, teacher recommendation, and performance in their current math course. Students who take Algebra 1 or Geometry in Middle School do not receive high school credit for these courses, but it does allow them to place into Geometry or Algebra 2 upon starting their ninth-grade year.

*This image represents the three main pathways for students, but there are opportunities to accelerate from Math 6 in 6th grade to Pre-Algebra in 7th grade. Course placement is evaluated each year to ensure students are enrolled in the course that best meets their readiness level.

Spanish Pathways

Like mathematics, the Middle School Spanish curriculum focuses on building a strong foundation while building confidence in speaking, listening, and reading in the Spanish language. Students will be placed into Upper School Spanish classes based on their grades, language comprehension, teacher recommendation, and placement tests.
