AND TEACH ALL NATIONS Rev. Gustavo Martínez International President of the WMM

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28:19-20

We are living in hard times, times of immorality, social disturbances and lack of God’s word. But these are also times of great opportunities and we have to take advantage of that; we must understand and redeem the current situation. For this reason, today more than ever we need to pray and obey what God told us to: “…The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest” (Matthew 9:37-38). We need to obey the Word and ask God to support women and men who are kindhearted, who are saint, consecrated, sensitive and feel sympathy for the current need in our society. When He told us to preach the Gospel, he explicitly asked us: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations” (Matthew 28:19). That means we must preach the Word of the Lord more, because it frees, it supports and gives us the challenge of serving

God with humbleness and simplicity. In Mark 3:13-15, the Bible states the Lord called a group of men to join Him. That means He called them to transmit His vision, provide them with His knowledge; He called them to let them know what they had to do and how. This group of men would later become the bearers of God’s message. In 1 Timothy 3:14-15, we read: “These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: but if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth”. Then, in 2 Timothy 2:2, we read: “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also”. That is the task that the Lord asks us to do: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations

n its ambition to show that a more radical generation will continue its terror legacy, the Islamic State recruits hundreds of minors to turn them into “child soldiers” or “cubs of the caliphate” as they are usually known. Antonio Martin (*)

Apparently, the Western world is not yet aware of the seriousness and complexity of what is happening in the Middle East with children who are indoctrinated by the Islamic State (ISIS) and affiliated groups. ISIS’ final target is to introduce a worldwide caliphate by destroying everything and every one who gets in the way. It is clear that the West is a big retaining wall on its way. For a very long time, people do not pay attention to headlines such as “Sixyear-old child, militant of ISIS helps decapitate victims”, “a jihadist child of the Islamic State decapitated a priest” or “Daesh’s child soldiers shoot prisoners”. For minors, it is not more than a war game that is, in fact, real. All their lives, those minors have been indoctrinated by a hate to the West without even know why. In every war, there are supposed to be rules that both of the implied sides have to comply with, nonetheless, ISIS does not. This is because it is not a State, therefore, it does not take part in international treaties signed throughout the world’s history. In this third world war of ISIS against the West, many unforgivable war crimes are being committed, thus costing the lives of thousands of minors. In May 2015, the One Magazine published some of the crimes and human rights violations against minors involved in war. ISIS pushes them to attack with total impunity. To recruit and use minors for war violates the InMISSIONARY MOVEMENT 6 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

ternational humanitarian law and the Human rights, and is considered a war crime. The Protocol II additional to the Geneva Conventions, which is applied in non-international conflicts, forbids state and non-state groups to recruit or use children under 15 years in armed conflicts. Although Syria has not signed the Protocol II, this prohibition is already considered as a traditional international right, therefore, it implies all the conflict sides.

MIDDLE WEST In the Middle West, children have the misfortune to end up belonging to this terrorist group voluntarily or obligatorily, only because they were born or moved to that territory.

These children are being indoctrinated to fight in this war; they are small mujahedin warriors trained in the art of war by real fanatics of the cause. For them, this indoctrination is like a school course which is taught by ISIS in all the areas it has influence. War is not a game. However, children are used to carry bombs, are warriors in the first battle line, they turn into spies or, with any luck, they are servants of their mujahedin adult idols. Many of them are teenagers who are still fighting with all their effort against the presumed invasion of international coalition. Some adolescents that have survived the battle field have turned into real killing machines. They keep receiving military training in different fields such as bomb manufacture, use of weapons, combat strategies, and some of them might have been promoted to chiefs of a small troop. No matter what, these children who are now adolescents, and the adolescents who are now adults will keep fighting, with their heads held high, without shaking, due to the brutal indoctrination. Their target is to have an Islamic caliphate. They are convinced that, if they die in battle, they will be rewarded by Janna (paradise), which is a victory for them. There is some shocking information about the use of children and adolescents by ISIS and other terrorist groups of the Middle East to attack and fight for their causes. The first known detention occurred in 2004, when a child aged only 10 years desisted sacrificing himself with an explosive belt whose objective was to kill Israeli soldiers. ISIS has been using children since the summer of 2014.

THE WEST In the West, there are an increasing number of cases of children involved with funding and recruitment for ISIS. They are children from the second or

third generation living in European cities, who are supposed to be living peacefully with their families, but, for some reason, they do not feel integrated to the western world. Not settling in is the cause of their admiration to jihadism. A great percentage of them joins the terrorist group thinking is the right path. For that reason, they travel to areas of conflict and join the ISIS forces. In France, there are 9300 children registered by the Police, 850 of them attend teaching centers. The Government has created a deradicalization center in each of the 13 regions of the country. They are called Reinsertion and Citizenship Centers. A part of these children is still following military strategies, become

spies in the West in any city and wait in the shadows until they receive a mission. In the meantime, they gather as much information as possible. That mission could be for tomorrow or next week or next year. Society deserves to know more about this situation in order to prevent any attack that this terrorist group might plan to carry out in the West today or in the near future. Children are the future of our society; our mission is to make sure they will have a peaceful future.

fter some weeks of relative calm, the ISIS attacked another European city. As in previous attacks, it was aimed to civilian population, innocent people who have nothing to do with their war

MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 16 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

This time, Barcelona was the target of the terrorist group. A car was driven into tens of people that were walking peacefully at Las Ramblas, the most important avenue of the Spanish city. It caused thirteen deaths and tens of injured people. As in previous cases, the attack caught the security system and the victims by surprise. The modus operandi of these

attacks makes people fear of other new attacks in any other place around world and against anyone, since those attacks cannot be detected by intelligence services on time. Apparently, the objective of ISIS is to search for targets which can have a great media impact, such as tourist places where they can cause damage with low amount of resources. The idea, according to the experts, is to arise fear with minimum effort and reach worldwide impact. “Barcelona is an appealing place for terrorism, as any other touristic city, because the impact is stronger since it’s a famous city”, says Sebastián Bitar, associate professor of the School of Government from the University of the Andes. The attacks have common characteristics and worry all the countries of the western world. The first conclusion is that these attacks will not stop any time soon. The second one is that they can occur in the most unimagined place with a great number of people. The crowds without good security systems will be targets, just like it happened in Barcelona. Due to the attacks in London during a concert, Nice and Stockholm, the

intelligence services of European countries have improved their precautions, but they cannot prevent it all. That is not physically possible. Terrorists have created a new sort of offensive, according to the experts. People are used to the traditional attacks with bombs, chemicals, kidnapping of planes, but are not ready for vehicles driving into crowds. Barcelona had a level-four anti-terrorist alert, however it did not avoid the attack, which did not need much preparation. It all resumes to one decision and one car. “They do not need to buy explosives, they do not need training in advanced techniques to manage devices, they do not need to travel, they do not need to know how to flight a plane, like in the attack to the Twin Towers, they do not have to know chemistry or other subjects, that is why they are easily done”, states Bitar. These attacks can be made by any person with a truck as it occurred on Thursday, August 17, in an emblematic place of Barcelona. According to analysts, the attacker might not even have had a close bond with the Islamic State. The war against the international terrorism is far from ending.

umankind is living in dangerous times, full of fear and insecurity. All of us, even God’s people, are amid conflict, pain and anguish, experiencing grief, crisis and worries.

Carmen Valencia

The Lord had warned us. He says in John 16: 33: “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” He is our almighty God, who can change every difficult situation, help us and strengthen us. Our true certainty, strength and trust do not depend on what surrounds us, what happens to us or what we see and hear, but on the One who is over it all. “Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle” (Psalm 24: 8). “The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea” (Psalm 93: 4). Many Psalms talk about mountains. According to His Word, mountains are like fortresses, defense walls, citadels and towers. In the ancient world, mounts were symbols of security, protection and strength. The angels who were sent to destroy Sodom as per God’s will took Lot and his family out of the city and told them: “Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed” (Genesis 19: 17). Jesus’ apostles approached Him when He was sitting on the Mount MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 18 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

of Olives and they asked Him for the day of his second coming and the end of times. Jesus told them which signs would appear before the end. He also warned them to flee to the mountains whenever they see those things coming. Matthew 24: 16: “Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains.

Mountains, therefore, represent firmness and stability. But mountains stopped being a symbol of strength for Christians. Psalm 46 was written in a very difficult moment for Israel, but it states that even if mountains shake and earth is removed, the Lord was, is and will always be our immediate shelter, our fortress.

The scene was catastrophic. The beautiful language in the Psalm describes the magnitude of the situation: safe places were no more. What represented strength, security and protection was now weak. This shows how serious, difficult and hard the situation was. Sometimes, what we take for granted and everlasting simply collapses

before our eyes. What once represented strength, firmness, and security, the foundation of our confidence, goes down just like that. In times of hardship, there are no guarantees. No matter how stable or firm someone or something may seem, it all may go to pieces, but God will never falter; only He can give us protection, security and help. In God we trust In this devastating scenario of hopeless times, where there seems to be no way out, in the middle of this storm of roaring waves, where things are no more in their right place, where the earth and mountains are removed, words free of doubt, fear, regret and sorrow but full of faith and trust sprout from the bottom of the psalmist’s heart: God is our shelter! The source of our confidence The first thing that the psalmist highlights is the source of our confidence, our security, our help, our bravery and our firmness. He repeats: It is God, God, the unyielding, the One who will always be, the strong in battle! We do not need mountains if we have God Mountains can shake and the earth be removed, but we will always be safe. Psalm 125: 1: “They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.” Psalm 118: 8: “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.” God is our water source The Psalm also refers to a river. Psalm 46: 4: “There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.” The biggest fear of eastern cities was to run out of water in times of war. The city could resist for a long time as long as their water source was safe. According to the Psalm, Jerusalem, God’s city, had a water source, meaning that despite their difficult situation, they had a source of divine grace and mercy that would help them endure hardship until the end. MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 20 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

God is amid the situation Who was in that river that cheered the city up despite the depletion, despite the darkness and affliction, and despite the setbacks and distress? Psalm 46: 5: “God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.” He is the source of living water

Jeremiah 2: 13: “For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.” 2 Corinthians 13: 5: “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, ex-

cept ye be reprobates?” 2 Corinthians 13: 11: “Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.” If He is with us, pain will be soothed, problems will be solved, and there will be joy and happiness.

John 7: 38: “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” John 4: 14: “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” You have the richest and liveliest

source to supply your needs. God is our shelter As with the river within Jerusalem, they could cried full of confidence: God is our shelter! He is our shield! That was His promise. Isaiah 31: 5: “As birds flying, so will the Lord of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it.” Psalm 121: 5: “The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.” Psalm 91: 1-4: “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.” Psalm 57: 1: “Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.” God is our strength He cares about our worries, our crisis, and our afflictions. He knows our pain, and it is important to Him. We never lose His sight when we are in the midst of trouble. Isaiah 26: 4: “Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.” Ephesians 6: 10: “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.” Philippians 4: 13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” What do you worry about? Your family? Your husband? Your debts? Have you lost a dear person? God knows each and every one of your worries. Isaiah 32: 2: “And a man shall be as a hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land”. He is your shelter and will always be your strength!

e all should have a health insurance which we can opportunely have access to and from which we can receive a good-quality health care. The cost of the insurance should be based on the needs instead of income.

Wálter Menchola Vásquez (*)

Health is currently considered a second-generation human right, similar to education and social security, and it is stipulated as such in the constitutions of many countries around the world. There is no debate about that, however there is one on how to implement this commitment between the State and citizens. If we analyze the situation by the economic aspect, it will always be complicated to have enough resources to satisfy all the needs of the population, but if we take the demand management into consideration and prioritize it, we will realize that it is possible to satisfy it and give insurance to all the population in an aspect that is morally and economically basic. The Universal Health Coverage (UHC) includes this approach and that is how the Worldwide Health Organization (WHO) also decides to include it and encourages his implementation. The doctor Margaret Chan said in her speech to the 65th Worldwide Health Assembly, on May 2012, “UHC is the single most powerful concept that public health has to offer to families and communities in general”.

WHY? In 2005, all the WHO member states made the commitment of reaching the Universal Health Coverage. This commitment meant the collective conviction that all people should have access to health services they need, without resulting in bankrupt or becoming MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 22 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

If the demand of the needs is managed, just like health systems, efficiently and effectively, it is possible for the weakest and the most vulnerable people to have access to health coverage, without facing economic difficulties (WHO, 2013).

poor. To be in favor of the Universal Health Coverage is a great way to improve health and well-being conditions and promote human development. The countries looking forward to having greater social and economic development have implemented this right in different health models and systems some based on social security, others

in national health systems, but most of them mixed systems. The target is to provide to all citizens, in general, with health coverage, access to health services and good-quality care. There is no excuse to keep postponing the implementation of this basic right; it is now that we need its implementation.

MAIN PRINCIPLES • Universality: All the citizens of a country or territory, must have health coverage and access to health services, without any sort of discrimination, in all the stages of their lives. • Solidarity: this funding mechanism works balancing the contributions within groups those who have higher income will contribute with higher amounts in comparison with those who have lower income. • Equity: health services are provided according to the needs of each person and prioritizing the most vulnerable and poorest populations. • Quality: health services must be provided with quality, and putting at risk the user’s safety. • Availability: health services must be strategically located and close to citizens. We must remain that there are three essential elements in the design and monitoring of the UHC: a) identify people who have health coverage, b) health services must be included, and c) proportion of expenses that must be covered. Even though the three elements are important, the first one constitutes the base of UHC. It must be noted that the Social Determinants of Health are essential factors so that people, families and communities have good health conditions, and that Health Systems constitute a small but important aspect to keep or improve people’s health.

ocused on exploring the Lord’s Prayer –the essence of Matthew 6– the book by Rev. John MacArthur talks about the attitude that Christians should have in their communication with the Lord.

For Christians, prayer is like breathing. You don’t have to think to breathe because the atmosphere exerts pressure on your lungs and forces you to breathe. That’s why it is more difficult to hold your breath than it is to breathe. Similarly, when you are born into the family of God, you enter into a spiritual atmosphere wherein God’s presence and grace exert pressure, or influence, on your life. Prayer is the normal response to that pressure. As believers, we have all entered the divine atmosphere to breathe the air of prayer. Only then can we survive in the darkness of the world. Launched in 2006, “Alone with God,” by American writer John MacArthur, talks about the attitude that all believers should have in their communication with the Lord. Based on the book “Jesus’ Pattern of Prayer,” written by the same author in 1981, it states that Jesus’ followers must have a heart focused on the Creator so that they naturally become one with Him. Old Testament Jews desired to pray because they believed God wanted them to approach Him. They didm’t fear God the way pagans did their gods. In fact, the rabbis said that Holy One yearns for the prayers of the righteous. They undoubtedly got that truth from Psalm 145: 18, which says, “The Lord is near to all who call upon Him.” No true Jew with a right spirit ever doubted God’s priority for prayer. The rabbis tightly believed prayer was not only communication with God but also a mighty weapon that released His power. About prayer, MacArthur, who is considered one the most influent preMISSIONARY MOVEMENT 24 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

WITH GOD achers of the 20th century in the U.S., states in the introduction to his book that “every generation faces the necessity to reprioritize and purify a corrupted or confused perception of prayer. For many, prayer has been replaced with pragmatic action. Function overrides fellowship with God; busyness crowds out communication.” The church has but one mission in this world: to lead people destined to spend eternity in hell to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and an eternity in heaven. If people die in a communist government or a democracy, under the tyrant or a benevolent dictator, believing homosexuality is right or wrong, believing abortion is a woman’s fundamental right to choose or simply mass murder, that has no bearing on where they will spend eternity. If they never knew Christ and never embraced Him as their Lord and Savior, they will spend eternity in hell.

PAGANISM Focused on exploring the Lord’s Prayer –essence of Matthew 6– this book mainly studies each phrase of the prayer’s pattern offered by Jesus to his disciples before his crucifixion. Therefore, readers learn that the Son of God directed the attention of the evangelical community to the Lord, to his worship, value and glory through a communication centered in the Almighty. Our own pride is the major obstacle we must overcome before we can pray for God’s will to be done in our lives. Pride caused Satan to rebel against God, and pride causes unbelievers to reject God and believers to disobey Him. To accept and pray for God’s will in sincerity and faith, you must abandon your own will to the sake of God’s. The apostle Paul tells us how to do that: “Therefore I urge

you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Rev. MacArthur has published more than 150 books, and he was also listened to every day on the radio program “Grace to You.” He states that “Alone with God” contributes to discovering the power and passion we receive in spending time with the Almighty. In addition, he says that prayer is both a statement of the Lord’s supremacy, justice and majesty and an exercise to adjust our desires and intentions to His will. Just as paganism is the great plague of India, Africa, and many other parts of the world, Christianity has been the blessing of the West. Europe and the United States, though never

fully Christian in any biblical sense, have been immeasurably blessed because of the Christian influence on political, social and economic philosophy and policy. However, the degraded view of human life, as evidenced in the growing legal and social approval abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia, and now so widely reflected in the low view of the family, has severely weakened that influence.

PURIFICATION This book rediscovers the power and passion of prayer through its three parts: one to define the strong need to pray continuously, another to analyze the prayer made by Jesus of Nazareth, and the last one to determine the right things to pray for. It also has a colophon structured as a study guide for personal reflection or group discussion about the subjects considered therein and as an aid to apply the lessons learned in everyday life. Jesus’ act of foot washing was more than an example of humility; it was also a picture of the forgiveness God gives in His repeated cleansing of those who are already saved. Dirt on the feet symbolizes the

daily surface contamination from sin that we experience as we walk through life. Sin does not, and cannot, make us entirely dirty, because we have been permanently cleansed. The judicial purging that occurs at regeneration needs no repetition, but the practical purification is necessary every day because daily we fall short of God’s perfect holiness. John MacArthur was born on June 19, 1939 and is known for his expository and dynamic preaching style of the Gospel. “Alone with God” is one of his books to spread the Lord’s message, among which are “The MacArthur Study Bible,” which sold more than one million copies, “Twelve Ordinary Men,” “A Simple Christianity,” “I believe in Jesus.” and his series of commen-

taries on the New Testament. When you pray, what do you typically pray for? If we were to take a survey of the evangelical church today on the topics most often prayed for, we would discover that most prayers are often misdirected, shortsighted, and selfish. We typically pray for health, happiness, and success. We pray for personal comfort. We pray for solutions to remedy all the physical problems of life, such as: healing, a place to live, a job, a car, a husband, a wife, children, a promotion, more money, and so on. As important as those things are, in some respects (especially to the people in need), they are low on the priority list in God’s kingdom.

ritten by the composer Thomas Andrew Dorsey in 1937, it was one of the first Christian records that sold a million copies. The hymn became very popular in the United States in the 50s.

Symbol of the Christian gospels, “Peace in the Valley”, released in 1937, was one of the first evangelic records that surpassed the amazing quantity of a million copies and has been one of the most sacred and popular songs form last century. Song of the American composer Thomas Andrew Dorsey, called “Father of Gospel Music”, treasures the amazing calm that Jesus Christ brings to people who believe and trust His Word. It was written for Mahalia Jackson, one of the most influential Christian artists in the world. Dorsey’s poem was written while he was traveling to the south of Indiana. He once declared: “I was on a train and saw horses, cows and sheep grazing in a small valley. Everything seemed so calm. I asked myself what was happening to humanity, why men could not live in peace. That is how ‘Peace in the Valley’ arouse”. Popularized by the soloist Red Foley, who made it a song in 1951, it became famous in the United States in the 50s and later throughout the world. Dorsey, after being asked about the popularity of his poem, said “I will never forget that I heard a barefoot young man singing the verses I created; he was walking in a dusty road in the Andros Island, Bahamas”. Born on July 1, 1899, in Georgia, the author introduced a new creative style that combined the glorification to God with jazz and blues. His songs, who talk about the relation between the believer, his faith and the Lord, were known as “dorseys”. MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 28 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

Peace in the Valley 1 Well I’m tired and so weary but I must go alone, till the Lord comes and calls me away, oh, yes, well the morning is bright and the lamb is the light, and the night, night is as fair as the day, oh yes. Chorus: There will be peace in the valley for me some day, there will be peace in the valley for me, oh Lord I pray, there’ll be no sadness, no sorrow, no trouble I’ll see, there will be peace in the valley for me. 2 There the flowers will be blooming and the grass will be green, and the skies will be clear and serene, oh yes, well the sun ever beams, in this valley of dreams, and no clouds there will ever be seen, oh yes. 3 Well the bear will be gentle and the wolf will be tame, and the lion shall lay down by the lamb, oh yes, well the beast from the wild shall be led by a little child, and I’ll be changed, changed from this creature that I am, oh yes.

Excellent pianist and a follower of God since he was a child, he stood up in the secular artistic world due to his prolific career from 1918 to 1932. After leaving non-religious music behind, Thomas Andrew Dorsey, who passed

away on January 23, 1993, dedicated his life to the Almighty and his talent to the Word. He promoted the term “gospel” to refer to evangelic songs. He founded “Dorsey House of Music”, the first African-American gospel music publishing

company that revolutionized the music industry. As timed passed, he became a leading figure. “Peace in the Valley”, one of the most successful songs of Dorsey, reached peak popularity on January 6, 1957, when it was performed by Elvis Presley, who dedicated it to people in Hungary, due to the communist repression in the Soviet Union, which they had suffered two months before. Later, the hymn was sung by other artists such as Little Richard, Connie Francis, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Ronnie Milsap and Tom Brumley.

harles Thomas Studd was a brilliant English missionary who gave his fortune to the poor and put himself at the service of JesusChrist. He preached the Word of God in Africa, India and China. Stephen Ross

Charles Thomas Studd was a loyal servant of Jesus-Christ who preached the Word of God in China, India and Africa. His life was a symbol of faith for the Christian community, who found in him what it means to follow the Lord without counting the cost and without looking back. C. T. was essentially a cavalry leader, and in that capacity he led several splendid charges. Three in particular stand out: when C. T. and Stanley Smith led forth the Cambridge Seven to China, in 1885; ten years later when C. T. toured the American Universities at the start of the Student Volunteers; and when in 1910 he initiated the campaign for the region between the Nile and Lake Chad (the largest unevangelized region in Africa at the time).

ARE YOU A CHRISTIAN? Charles Thomas Studd was born in England in 1860, one of three sons of a wealthy retired planter, Edward Studd, who had made a fortune in India and had come back to England to spend it. After being converted to Christ during a Moody-Sankey campaign in England in 1877, Edward Studd became deeply concerned about the spiritual welfare of his three sons and influenced them for the cause of Christ before his death two years later. By the time C. T. was sixteen he had become an expert cricket player and at nineteen was captain of his team at Eton College. He was further educated at Trinity College, Cambridge where he was also recognized as an outstanding cricketer. MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 30 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

C. T. was saved in 1878 at the age of 18 when a visiting preacher at their home caught C. T. on his way to play cricket. “Are you a Christian?” he asked. C. T’s answer not being convincing enough, the guest pressed the point and C. T. tells what happens as he acknowledges God’s gift of eternal life received through faith in Christ: “I got down on my knees and I did say ‘thank you’ to God. And right then and there joy and peace came into my soul. I knew then what it was to be ‘born again,’ and the Bible which had been so dry to me before, became everything.” But there followed a period of six years in a backslidden state. C. T. rela-

It was while in China that C. T. reached the age in which according to his father's will he was to inherit a large sum of money. Through reading God's Word and much prayer, C. It was his public testimony before God and man that he believed God's Word to be the surest thing on earth.

tes: “Instead of going and telling others of the love of Christ, I was selfish and kept the knowledge to myself. The result was that gradually my love began to grow cold, and the love of the world began to come in. I spent six years in that unhappy backslidden state.” The Lord in His goodness worked in his life and after a serious illness of his brother and his going to hear D. L. Moody the Lord met C. T. again and restored to him the joy of His salvation. The Lord continued to work in his life, and led C. T. to go to China. C. Inland Mission and in February, 1885, sailed for China. Once there, they followed the early practice of the Mission by living and dressing in Chinese fashion. He and the others began at once to learn the language and to further identify themselves with the nationals by wearing Chinese clothing and eating with them. It was while in China that C. T. reached the age (25 years old) in which according to his father’s will he was to inherit a large sum of money. Through reading God’s Word and much prayer, C. T. felt led to give his entire fortune to Christ! This was not a fool’s plunge on his part. It was his public testimony before God and man that he believed God’s Word to be the surest thing on earth. Before knowing the exact amount of his inheritance, C.T. sent £5000 to Mr. Moody, another £5000 to George Müller (£4000 to be used on missionary work and £1000 among the orphans); as well as £15,000 pounds to support other worthy ministries. In a few months, he was able to discover the exact amount of his inheritance and he gave some additional thousands away, leaving about £3400 pounds in his possession. Three years after arriving in China, C. T. married a young Irish missionary from Ulster named Priscilla Livingstone Stewart. Just before the wedding he presented his bride with the remaining money from his inheritance. She, not to be outdone, said, “Charlie, what did the Lord tell the rich young man to do?” “Sell all.” “Well then, we will start clear with the Lord at our wedding.” And they proceeded to give the rest of the money away for the Lord’s work. They served the Lord together in inland China through many perils and hardships until in 1894 after ten years in China, ill health forced the Studds to return to England, where they turned their property over to the China Inland Mission. From 1896-1897, C. T. toured American universities in behalf of MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 32 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

the newly formed Student Volunteer Movement. C. T. describes one of the meetings at Bucknell College in Pennsylvania: “Had a splendid student’s meeting at 6:30. The Lord was greatly with us. After some hymns and a pra-

agreed to support him, yet told by God to go, once more C. T. staked all on obedience to God. His answer to the Committee was, “Gentlemen, God has called me to go, and I will go. I will blaze the trail, though my grave may only become a stepping stone that younger men may follow.” Leaving his wife and four daughters in England, C. T. sailed, contrary to medical advice, for the heart of Africa in 1910, where he continued to work until his death in 1931. C. T. bore much fruit for the Savior while in Africa as he endured weakness and sickness; loosing most of his teeth and suffering several heart attacks; but he endured hardness as a good soldier of the Lord Jesus Christ! In a letter home, C. T. gave a last backward look at the outstanding events of his life: “As I believe I am now nearing my departure from this world, I have but a few things to rejoice in; they are these: 1. That God called me to China and I went in spite of utmost opposition from all my loved ones. 2. That I joyfully acted as Christ told that rich young man to act. 3. That I deliberately at the call of God, when alone on the Bibby liner in 1910, gave up my life for this work, which was to be henceforth not for the Sudan only, but for the whole unevangelized World. My only joys therefore are that when God has given me a work to do, I have not refused it.” Shortly after 10:30 p.m. on a July day in 1931, C. T. Studd went home to be with His Lord whom he had loved so dearly and served so faithfully! The last word he spoke was “Hallelujah”!

India where C. T. served as a pastor of a church in Ootacamund for six years. From the time of his conversion, C. T. had felt the responsibility upon their family to take the Gospel to India. After their return home to England

in 1906, C. T. was stirred by the need for missionary pioneer work in Central Africa. But again the path was not without obstacles. Penniless, turned down by the doctor, dropped by a Committee of businessmen who had

Dawn of March 15, 2002; Buenos Aires, Argentina. A man was crying his heart out in a hospital’s corridor. His daughter had just been born, but tragedy had shattered his happiness: the child had been born with cerebral palsy. As soon as the little girl was born, physicians realized how serious her state was and arranged her transfer to intensive care, where she was connected to a ventilator. Nurses took good care of her, but her situation got worse by the minute and their efforts seemed worthless. “She’ll die, she’ll die,” the nurses said. A few hours later, her death seemed imminent. The newborn showed barely any vital signs. The doctor said to the brokenhearted father that his child would die at any moment. “Make the arrangements for the funeral,” he said. Devastated and writhing in pain, Marcos Cuéllar felt completely alone in the hardest moment of his life. He could not break the news to his wife. She was convalescent due to her recent Caesarean, and her diabetes threatened to affect the healing. Their 2-year-old daughter was at home under the care of some friend. The desperate father cried for hours, wondering what he had done to deserve such misfortune.

sorrow. When he was 2 years old, his parents decided to leave their hometown in Lanús, Buenos Aires, to move to Formosa, in the north of the country. He was the third of eight children who were raised into an upper-middle-class family. His father was a businessman and the owner of a supermarket chain. They were seemingly happy with a life a full of luxury and wealth, as well as a privileged position in society. But within their home, family life was unbearable, fights were daily bread. The father, Atanasio Cuéllar, was horrible to his family. He would beat MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 36 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

his wife even in front of their own children, who were also constantly threatened. Adultery and alcohol clouded his reason and drove him to a dissipated life. In addition, his excessive expenses made the family go bankrupt. When Marcos was 12 and attending school, he had to assume a huge responsibility: have a day job and go to school at night. When he turned 14, he thought that he was enough of a man to confront his father. He could not stand it anymore and tried to stop him from beating his mother, but his father completely lost his mind and gave him a thrashing that left him lying and blee-

ding on the floor. A deep hatred towards his father filled his heart and he decided to never approach him again. RADICAL CHANGE One day, the neighbor living in front of their house called out for all the children in the vicinity. She ran a little Summer School for Biblical Study. Marcos’ siblings asked her mother to go and she agreed. After school, one of the children said something surprisingly odd that seemed more like a sentence to the family: “One day, you will all go to hell!” The words left everyone at home as-

tonished, so the following day Ana, the mother, went to the school to find out what was being taught to his child. She was informed that their children had been taught biblical lessons, and she herself was also taught about different topics. She felt a transformation. She let Christ come into her heart and she came back home with a new worldview. Ana was never the same again. She stopped cursing back his husband despite his mistreatment, but she talked to him about God and looked for a church to attend. She was brave and strong enough to overcome any obstacle in her life.

She did not react violently but just called for the Lord. On his part, Atanasio wanted to stir her up to anger but got nothing. One day, he put a knife to her wife’s throat and said: “The Church or me!” Ana did not falter but bravely said: “The Church! I stay with Christ!” The man released her immediately and never beat her again.

CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK In 1994, after high school, Marcos had not enough money to go to college. An uncle from Argentina’s National Gendarmerie promised to help him to enter the institution. This way, he joined the

corps and became a nom-com. He graduated after two years and then went to visit his father. The man was lying sick in a hospital. When he arrived, he found his mother leaving the room with one of his uncles, who was a pastor. “Your father has accepted Christ and acknowledged the Lord as his Savior,” they told him. Alone with his father in such critical condition, he cried like a child and showed him his police officer certificate: “Dad, I made it!” he said. His father could not speak, so he just nodded. Marcos then decided to forgive him and embraced him tightly. A few hours

later, the old man died. Some years later, Marcos married Karina Alfonso in 2000. He was assigned to Buenos Aires and on August 9 of that same year, their first daughter was born. Unfortunately, the family began to have problems. Due to the little time he spent with his family, crisis took over his home. His jealousy made him even lock up his wife and daughter. Little by little, he began to turn into the type of man he MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 38 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

swore he would never be. He became an alcoholic, a womanizer and a batterer. Despite everything, his wife got pregnant again, but fights continued and divorce was imminent. He called his mother, who once traveled to help them and take them to church, but nothing changed. “Once the child is born, I’ll leave this woman, I don’t love her anymore”, he said.

A “MIRACLE” IS BORN Such was Marcos’ decision, but the little girl was born with cerebral palsy, and he was wallowing in despair. Despite his desolation, he decided to call his mother and, while crying bitterly, he told her: “My baby girl is dying!” She answered: “Today is the day to devote yourself to the Lord!” He accepted and they made the prayer of faith over the phone. Marcos believed that Christ would make a miracle at that very mo-

“It was hard to see her leave the operating room”, tells Marcos many years later. Half of her child’s body was in plaster and her legs were held high. Days passed by and she had a favorable evolution. After 40 days, the couple made a promise to the Lord: If Milagros left the hospital fully recovered, they would go to church. And so it was. The girl was discharged on April 26, 2002, and the following day the whole family visited the temple of the Worldwide Missionary Movement in the capital city of Argentina.

ment. “Your daughter’s name will be Milagros (miracles)”, said his mother. The following day, the child went on tube feeding. “There is hope, it’s a miracle,” the physician said. The little girl and his wife got better and better as days passed by. Husband and wife started to read the Bible. God improved the baby’s condition and restored their marriage. However, doubt invaded his mind and he decided to grant the glory to the doctors instead of God.

Fifteen days later, when the child was about to be discharged, she relapsed into a critical condition due to an infection in her right hip. She underwent an emergency intervention and Marcos thought that it was his fault, that his lack of faith would kill her child! As the doors of the operating room closed, he took his wife’s hand, kneeled and begged for forgiveness: “Have mercy, my Lord!” Tears, regret and suffering took over him.

TRUE VICTORY It was very special for Marcos to arrive in church by the hand of his wife and daughters. He cannot explain with words the love he felt from the Lord as well as his gratitude towards Him for having saved his family. After fifteen years he has never left His side. He got baptized with his wife soon after. God blessed them with two more children, Elías and Ruth. A big family. Marcos learnt to put all his trust in the Lord. The family moved to Mendoza and God called him to His Work. In 2014, he left the Gendarmerie to devote himself completely to the Lord. With his usual income gone, his family had a hard time. The National Guard decided to not grant him any pension due to his withdrawal and despite his years of service. One night, Marcos cried bitterly in his car for not having enough money for his family. He hoped some friend, pastor, or relative would help him, but nobody did. They all seemed to have forsaken him, but a voice told him: “I supply you.” He went home and decided to burn an old diary, but he found there 600 pesos (ARS). After calling his wife, he heard again the same voice: “I will not forsake you.” From then on, God has only made great things in his life. Milagros is 15 years old now, and despite a motor sequela, she lives a normal life, plays the bass drum and helps her older sister sing praises to the Lord.

“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2: 7). Rev. Luis M. Ortiz

The Bible urges us not to use speculation or theories of false science. What do we mean by that? We refer to purely speculative presumptions that have not been proved or verified and are therefore not scientific. All theory is false science. One hypothesis states that many millions of years ago there was a big explosion that gave birth to galaxies, stars, celestial bodies, constellations, the solar system and our planet. However, it is easier to understand that an explosion generates but chaos and disorder, and that it could have never produced, on its own, such a balanced universe like ours. Another theory, proposed by Charles Darwin, concerns the evolution of species. According to his hypothesis, humans evolve from apes. This theory was incredibly popular for a while, but it does not cover the whole story. GOD CREATED MAN. This is what the Bible states: “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2: 7). Genesis 1: 27 says, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him… ” God took dust of the ground and with his creating hands formed a beautifully shaped yet lifeless figure that would become the first man. But then the Bible tells that God “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” GOD GENERATED ENERGY. We read in the Scriptures about God’s breath and the wind of God’s spirit making great deeds. From the beginning of Creation, as the Bible says, “… the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters” (Genesis 1: 2). The word used in Hebrew tells us that the Holy Spirit produced vibrations to generate energy, MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 40 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

BREATH and so different waves (electric, electromagnetic, light and sound waves, etc.) began to pulse forth. HUMAN RACE PREVAILED. During the Flood, the Earth did not dry up

in more than a year, since Noah entered the Ark until he left it. But then, according to the Bible, “… God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters assuaged… And the waters decrea-

sed…” (Genesis 8: 1-5). Human race prevailed by God’s Spirit breath. ISRAEL WAS BORN. About the parting of the Red Sea, by which the people of Israel escaped captivity in Egypt, the Bible states: “… And the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind… And made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry

ground…” (Exodus 14: 21-22). The people praised God saying, “And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as a heap… Thou didst blow with thy wind… Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed…” (Exodus 15: 8, 10, 13). Israel was born by God’s Spirit breath. ISRAEL WAS RESTORED. God showed Ezekiel the restoration of the people of Israel, he gave him a vision of the valley of dry bones. Ezekiel prophesied and the bones came together. He prophesied again and sinews, flesh and skin covered the bones, but there was no spirit in them. He prophesied once more and said to the Spirit: “… Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live… And the breath came into them, and they lived… Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel…” (Ezekiel 37: 9-11). Israel has been restored to its land, but it is like a valley of spiritual corpses with no spiritual life for they reject Jesus-Christ as their Messiah. But the day is near when the Lord will come to the Earth for a second time and then He will pour upon the House of David and

Jerusalem inhabitants “… the spirit of grace and of supplications…” (Zechariah 12: 10). A dead nation is restored and revived by God’s Spirit breath. GOD ALLOWED REBIRTH. When Nicodemus came to Jesus asking about the kingdom of God, he said: “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” ( John 3: 3). As the statue of clay and dust was granted life by God’s Spirit breath in the Garden of Eden, so a sinner who is dead in crimes and sins can be granted eternal life, be born again, and become God’s child by God’s Spirit’s breath. THE CHURCH WAS BORN. “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come… Suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting… And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost…” (Acts 2: 1-4). The Holy Spirit’s breath gave birth to the Church of our Lord Jesus-Christ. This mighty wind from the Holy Spirit was necessary to set aside and remove every materialist and worldly idea from the apostles and disciples, and to grant them the virtue of the Holy Spirit so that they become witnesses of JesusChrist all over the world (Acts 1: 8). The Lord’s Church was born thanks to the mighty wind of Pentecost. The Apostolic Church conquered thanks to the breath of Pentecost. The persecuted Church survived thanks to the mighty wind of Pentecost. The imperial Church went mundane because it breathed in the poisonous wind of the imperial palace and lacked the pure wind of the Holy Spirit. The medieval or papal Church suffered moral, spiritual and doctrinal corruption as it followed the wind of the fierce and pagan Roman Empire and rejected the revitalizing and divine breath of the Holy Spirit. The Protestant Church emerged almost breathless, gasping for air, without the breath of Pentecost but eventually, in the beginning of the 20th century, revived with the mighty wind of Pentecost.

“… And Moses spake unto the Lord, saying, Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation, which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the Lord be not as sheep which have no shepherd. And the Lord said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him; And set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight. And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient… And Moses did as the Lord commanded him…” (Numbers 27: 12-23). Rev. Gustavo Martínez

Today, there is an increasing lack of leaders with passion, vision, responsibility, loyalty and trustworthiness in the world. We need influential and inclusive leadership. “Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest” (Matthew 9: 37-38). That is why we must obey God’s Word and ask Him to send forth men and women who act according to His heart. These leaders must stand out, grow and work to carry out the task entrusted by God. Society in general needs them, but especially the Lord’s Church. In a world that has gone astray, we need leaders who influence others for good, who do their best, who do not shun the hard work, who take on the greatest challenge of their life. What is a “leader”? A leader is a person who can set and meet a goal; the visible face of a group or team, etc.; the person who stands out in his group, capable of influencing, inspiring and communicating with others; the person who can manage, take the initiative, negotiate, convene and promote a project in an efficient way. In Christian life, we must keep balance between what God does with His supreme power –even if we do MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 42 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

AND TRUSTWORTHY LEADERS not understand it– and what we do as our duty. This balance can be found throughout the whole conquest of the Promised Land, when Joshua and the people of Israel obeyed God ( Joshua 3). Now more than ever we need God’s direction, not human mechanisms, manipulations or pressures. We need God’s guidance so that our actions follow His divine will. As regards authority, there is a fine line between God’s authority and ours that we may cross if we are not careful. Man might distort things and say that it is God speaking or commanding when it really is just him. We need to feel the fear of God and know that we are before the One who knows the heart and mind of every person. We must be aware that it is Him who does marvels, not Joshua, not officers, not heads of the family. God makes us great, as He did with Joshua (Joshua 4). God said to him, “This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee” ( Joshua 3: 7). It must have been quite exciting for Joshua to see how the people that had been so reluctant and disobedient before were now listening to him and following his orders. Joshua became one of the most influential men among his people and one of the leaders who was most attached to the Word of God. God said to him: “There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor for-

sake thee... Only be thou strong and very courageous… This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success” ( Joshua 1: 5-8). Before thinking we deserve a post or appointment, it is important to be men of God, submitted to the Lord, as Christ stated: “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Matthew 16: 24). Some leaders are not as faithful as they should be, but they are more attached to earthly things, to relationships, to business, they refuse to fast, make a vigil, or study the Bible, they do not like to obey, they do not serve God’s purposes, and still manage to become part of the ministry. The people of Israel had not heard from Moses in a while and a rumor had it that he was dead. That made them waver. Worry sometimes takes away our confidence, makes us not wait in the Lord, leads us to disobey His Word and leave our posts. Those kind of rumors discourage, get into our mind and take away our interest and love for the Work of God. Be wary of those rumors, we must wait in the Lord. We are meant to be men who fully and deeply trust the Word, the doctrine. We must not act by rumors, but remain still, as the Lord states: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46: 10).

The people approached Aaron and he, instead of remaining firm in his convictions, faltered due to the pressure and problems. On the other hand,

there was Joshua, who was a minister. “And Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua: and Moses went up into the mount of God. And he said unto the

elders, Tarry ye here for us, until we come again unto you…” (Exodus 24: 13-14). Moses was on the top of the mount, under the cloud, receiving God’s instructions, while Joshua was at its foot. As Moses’ servant, he could not doubt, no matter what would happen up there, no matter what he would hear: He would stay there waiting for Moses and God’s instructions. Joshua, before being chosen by God to become leader, had lived as a minister for forty years. He knew that his destiny was not to be famous, he never wanted it. He knew that he was there to serve. We are all called to serve. The great biblical leaders were people who learnt to submit, to serve others. They were people who recognized their leaders and served them. That cleared the path for Joshua: his submission and more specifically his knowledge of the Work’s Owner.
