Spotlight on Gallery of Caribbean Art as they showcase four incredibly talented artists from our neck of the woods.

22 You're Bajan but...

Our first in a series of excerpts from Julian Armfield's brilliant book: Absolutely Barbados.

Just do it. There isn't a celebration which is more make-or-break than Valentine's. If it works you've changed two lives forever and the rest becomes the footnote of history. If it doesn't work it means you've dodged a bullet and sooner or later, you'll find out they were a raving lunatic anyway. Congratulations. Either way you're moving forward and forward is the only direction God has given us. There was an article in the New York Times in which the journalist interviewed the creator of a dating app and asked him if he had ever been in love. It turns out that there was a girl back in the day but he was young then and wasn't who he had become today. He still loved her today but knew that it was all over. They hadn't spoken for years but, through the grapevine, heard that she was three months away from getting married. The journalist stopped him and told him that he had to find her and tell her he still loved her. A month later the journalist was called back for a lunch - a table of three. He had flown across the US to find his college sweetheart. She cancelled the wedding that she was nervous about, ended the relationship that was rocky and argumentative and there they were, giggling like children over lunch, together again, talking to the journalist that made it happen. Be that couple. Be together, alive, in love... And don't screw it up!

How to win on Valentine's: The step-by-step guide to romantic perfection. Shout I-LOVE-THIS-ROCK and open doors to the magic. ilovethisrock Chocolates from Green Monkey Chocolatier This is where you start your day. If you manage to go through Valentine's without chocolates you've lost the game before it started. These are probably the finest chocolates money can buy in Barbados... And they have put together an exclusive selection for just for us. Quote ilovethisrock and you will get a box of nine. Three of each of the three best-sellers together, united for the first time. This means you can taste

one, your loved one can taste one and then you can fight over the third! Repeat three times! The first dark square is a soft dark chocolate ganache that had a splash of milk added in to take the edge off. It's then dipped in tempered black chocolate to create the brittle, cracking outershell. It's so simple yet complex at the same time... So like most relationships?!

The second chocolate that Green Monkey prepared for us is a passion-fruit ganache painstakingly put together over several days. They have a chocolate-spray-gun (no lie) and by using it they can coat their mould with four different layers of coloured cocoa-butter. That's how they make the sparkling green outer-shell so green and so sparkling. A day later, when it sets, they then add their home-made, Bajan passionfruit ganache. That then sets for two days before they close the bottom with a flat layer of white chocolate. It's incredible. We have a rule in the office that chocolate and fruit shouldn't go together but Green Monkey have just proved us wrong. The third chocolate is a caramel, pink Himalayan sea-salt truffle. So as they are heating up their bajan sugar and butter in a pan, they stop the process just before the liquid caramelises and add pink sea-salt. Once that sets they then dip it in milk chocolate but also add a decorative line-splashing of dulcey. Good question! Dulcey is what you get when you accidentally leave white chocolate out to cook for an entire night. It becomes caramelly in its own right and that tiny hint is where the art is. It's the perfect start to any good Valentine's Day. $75 Box of 9 ilovethisrock chocolates The Green Monkey Chocolatier thegreenmonkeychocolatier.com +1(246)231-1001, Worthing

valentine's morning ilovethisrock smoothie at ArtSplash The phenomenal Sunday brunch they did in December is over now but they've made space for bagels and... The Valentine's smoothie that they call ilovethisrock! If that's not the coolest thing in the world I don't know what is. It's available as a limited edition smoothie through the month of February so go and get one, then post photos about it because so long as people are drinking things called ilovethisrock, we're winning! It's made with almond milk, local ripe banana, pomegranate juice, frozen berries and love! It's redder than red and tastes amazing. Pomegranate is actually already renowned for getting the 'juices flowing'. Bananas will stop you cramping up mid-performance and frozen berries just taste really good. Frankly, there couldn't be a better Valentine's smoothie.

Love Wall The day before Valentine's, Saturday 13th February, ArtSplash is organising a Love Wall. When you buy anything on market day you will

be given a heart-shaped post-it. The idea is that you write a message to someone you love and put it up with all the others. We thought about making it anonymous but there is no way you can post something up in front of everyone else without someone seeing you... You might as well make a big deal out of it!

Hugging Booth And it just gets better. Market day will also have a resident hugger. Now you think you've seen it all. You think you've been hugged by the best. You think no hug could beat your hug. Well this woman is Melena and she is a Reiki healer and a wellness coach. She will suck the demons right out of you. Not entirely sure how but there's promise in that magic. The alternative is that nothing happens and you get an average hug from Melena. What's not to love? $11 - Medium ArtSplash artsplashbarbados.com

ilovethisrock fruit-tea smoothie at NovelTeas For just this month (unless we convince them to keep it on permanently) NovelTeas have used their bubble-tea expertise to put together the most chewy smoothie ever! Bubble Tea is the most Asian modern food conceived. They take any flavour of tea from mango to strawberry and they add jelly, tapioca and popping-boba! What you get is an ice-cold drink that tastes super fruity, has jelly and tapioca that gets sucked up through your straw and every now and again when you bite down you'll

be popping a ball of cold lychee jelly. When that goes off in your mouth it's a whole new world of "wait-what-just-happened?!" What does the ilovesthisrock fruit-teasmoothie have in it? It's mango, strawberry, banana and a copious amount of their coconut jelly. You will be chewing your way through this drink! $9 ilovethisrock Smoothie facebook.com/health.tea.foods NovelTeas Teahouse +1(246)-228-8327, Rockley

Take your Valentine's Day to the next level with your own violinist... Seriously. Morning chocolates, smoothies... And now for the part that separates the men from the boys: Get your own violinist to play for you as you toast with champagne flutes and whisper "No not now, the violinist is right there!" We tracked down Shawn Holder and he has agreed to perform for you, wherever you want

and if you quote ilovethisrock you will receive an amazing rate. Shawn studied under Erwin Braithwaite and Janice Millington, the pioneers that made the Royal School of Music what it is today. Over 30 years Shawn has played for everyone from

CARICOM heads of government to Tiger Woods and Martha Stewart. You've got to hear him play. Descriptions are just a set of futile words. Shawn Holder $250 for 1.5 hours when you quote ilovethisrock +1(246)251-2470

ilovethisrock Valentine's Photo-Shoot to cement the day in the annals of history So now that we've organised the best violinist for your romantic moments together there could be nothing better than to get photos of the whole affair. If you haven't heard of Andre Williams it's because you've never asked who that photographer over there is. Andre is omnipresent. He manages to get to every event for everything and photograph everyone. We believe he has a stunt double because that's a lot of places for a lot of photos. There is no way he can pull this all off alone. What Andre has agreed to do give a special price for a shoot at your chosen place and time (and if Shawn Holder happens to be there it's a major bonus... #justsaying). You will then receive ten perfect, pro-edited digital photos for you to keep, print, share. Get your Colgate smile ready.

Andre Williams was born on the island of Montserrat on the 9th of November 1954. His father was a Barbadian of Welsh descent and his mother a Lebanese immigrant to Montserrat aged eight. The family relocated to Barbados in 1955. From his teenage years Andre enjoyed snapping with a Kodak point-and-shoot camera. Encouraged by family and friends and a growing passion for photography Andre enrolled in several photo classes. Armed with this knowledge and a Nikon digital camera he has been capturing the beauty of God's creation in people and nature for all to enjoy. $100 for ten shots when you quote ilovethisrock Andre Williams andrewilliamsphotography.net

afternoon entertainment ilovethisrock Burger The day the best burger in Barbados got even better This February go to Stream and ask for the ilovethisrock burger. It's insane. In the November issue, we wrote about how good the burgers at Stream were. It was a snippet that explained how they grind their own cuts of beef in the right proportions to make the most incredible beef patty. Now, they've surf-n-turfed it up! Check this out. Take a standard really big and really juicy burger. Picturing it ok? Now add a layer of melted blue cheese and then some buffalo-sauced-jumbo shrimp. Nothing short of incredible. Serve it up with crispy onions, fries, coleslaw and you're winning. It is worth noting that the blue cheese doesn't really taste strong because it's the creaminess that they were aiming for and creaminess they delivered. $48 ilovethisrock Burger, Coleslaw & Fries Search Facebook for Stream Bar & Restaurant +1(246)233-5858, Worthing Photo: Lalita Vaswani

ilovethisrock Rum-Punch Cheesecake from Coffee Barbados Cafe, George Washington House Cheesecakes have existed in every shape and form but the day had to come where the most Bajan cheesecake had to be born... An ilovethisrock cheesecake. Coffee Barbados have reinvented the cheesecake and at the end of every bite, if you wait three seconds, you'll start to feel the after-effect of the rum. It's a good cake and it has been done well. Very well. Coffee Barbados Cafe George Washington House

Asian Spice has created a dessert that's on fire! Literally! It's deep-fried ice-cream but because that isn't enough, they pour liquor over it and then light it up. It’s possibly the most underrated experience in Barbados yet it's what every kid should be doing and every adult dreaming of. Full-moon nights are good ideas when you want to look at the moon but the day you want to look at Saturn or Jupiter, Venus or Mars, go on a darker night where the moonlight won't block the view. We tried squeezing in as many Uranus jokes as possible and we recommend you try too. If you get far enough they will start pronouncing it differently so that you stop. The truth is, and we're not making this up, Uranus is a very acidic and hostile environment with a lot of dangerous gases. When we heard that, we were cooked! hbo.bb/ 8pm - 10pm

Bob Marley's Birthday

The chances are, and we may be wrong but we don't think we are, Mojos will be a good place to go for Mr Marley's birthday. Facts you may not know! Born Nesta Robert Marley, he was called 'white boy' by his neighbours because his father was a white British naval captain. As an adult he talks about his childhood and says that it's what led him to the philosophy: "I’m not on the white man’s side, or the black man’s side. I’m on God’s side." In November 2014, Forbes magazine listed Bob Marley in fifth place of highest earning dead celebrities. After 75million sold albums worldwide, his family continue to manage his estate and have even licensed coffee and audio equipment. Coffee?! Fill us in! magazine@ilovethisrock.com

Girlfriends Expo

Now in its seventh year, the organisation was founded on the back of young Miss Barbadoses who were going to move past pageants and into the real world. It was obvious to the creators that these girls needed resources and preparation. Today the event is all about empowering women. Everything about women, for women. There is a whole roster of events including Feminars (seminars just for ladies) about shadism, PCOS and LGBT topics amongst many others. Shaz and Tracy will be presenting a HeyVajayJay Pad Party and although it's definitely a women's event, there always seems to be an emphasis on the fact that men can come too. We were told that men can discover a lot about women at the event and we totally agree. It would be amazing if any male managed to emerge uneducated. Sharon Carpenter will be hosting a celebrity brunch at 10am on Sunday. Expect to hear about how women can become stronger, more independent and entrepreneurial in this, still, sclerotically male world. Empowering, Educating and Entertaining. Waterman Festival and the Beach Culture World Tour

T

his is the first time in history that anyone in the world has brought nature itself into a competition like this. It seems mad that no one thought of this before but it's nothing but the best possible way to do things. Ocean-man Brian Talma took the one step no one has ever taken; let's compete... given the conditions. It's a multi-disciplinary festival where you are judged on surfing, kite-surfing, windsurfing and SUP. It's called the Waterman because it's about mankind and the ocean. You're the Waterman when you can perform in the water regardless of the discipline. You're the Waterman when you have accumulated points in every discipline. The waterman who has the most fun, is most entertaining and most inspiring emerges as the champion.

As Brian says "It’s important to be present, not scared to fail, crank deAction and get paid to play; and who has the most fun... Wins!"

that leads to one trophy.

It's the first time that the organisers will step outside, look at the ocean, feel the wind, understand the currents and say that today is a good day for windsurfing... So that's the competition. When the conditions change so that surfing becomes the best option, everyone will pick up a surf board and start working the waves. When the wind changes and it seems as though it's the perfect moment to do a kite-surf slalom, everyone puts their surfboards down and they all pick up their kitesurf stuff.

So that was Waterman... What's the Beach Culture World Tour?

How many surf competitions have been underwhelming because the conditions just weren't right? What about the Mount Gay Round The Island Race in 2015? The wind was so low but rather than postponing the whole event to a better day, everyone competed... Very slowly. Everyone gets to work their skills over several days through several sports for a combined score

16 Read more reviews and find out what’s on this month at ilovethisrock.com

Beach Culture World Tour It's that one step beyond sports-tourism. Now there's no doubt that watersports form a major part of Bajan tourism but here's the question: If foreign surfers buy land and build houses so they can move to Barbados and surf all year round, is that still sports tourism? What about the community that grows around spots like Silver Sands? They are some of the closest, tight-knit communities in Barbados. Would you say that's sports-tourism? What about the art that stems from surfing? The photography? The lifestyle? Put these altogether and you have Beach Culture. It changed the economic landscape of Barbados and we're talking of everything past sports tourism. Brian Talma is a massive proponent of Beach

Culture and he's the creator of the Beach Culture World Tour. He is the lazy man's worst nightmare and has no time for the status quo. Things need to be done, lives need to be changed. It's no surprise everything around him is branded up deAction. When he was a kid he knew he wanted to live on the beach and everyone kept telling him to find a 'real' job ‑but in 1989 he was on the front cover of four magazines. He was out to prove everyone wrong and that passion has continued to fuel him through his adult life. So if you really want Brian to do something, tell him you bet he can't do it... Then sit back, kick your feet up and watch him change the world. Waterman Festival 27th & 28th February Beach Culture World Tour 23rd February - 5th March briantalma.pro

Un Dimanche à Paris The best way to have a tête-à-tête over a frothy cappuccino is to fly across the Atlantic to a cobble-stoned European city, right? Guess again. Nestled in the courtyard of Limegrove is a chic yet somewhat quirky concept store with a distinct burnt-orange-coloured decor. This is home to our very own local Parisian brunch spot. La Suite at Un Dimanche à Paris is truly a delightful place to have a light bite or a sweet nibble. The menu is limited, but what they serve is undoubtedly appealing to the palette. Breakfast is served from Tuesday-Saturday from 10am and rumour has it that some of their danishes were

even baked at the newly formed bakery at the Cliff Restaurant. If you are smart enough to choose their signature tartine, you will be lucky enough to have a cheeky shot of a spicy tomato gazpacho. You might as well have a glass of rosé since there's more wine than anything else on le menu. Their macaroons are specially made by the renowned Wendy Abed of the Green Monkey Chocolatier and they are indeed comparable to Ladurée’s finest. If you care to, try the mango macaroon. We had a dessert called “Café Gourmand”. It's a dessert with a coffee served on a rustic wooden board, is surrounded by miniature versions of

a variety of classic French sweet temptations. Calories should certainly not be counted when you are here. If you want to have a cosy chat, it’s best to call ahead to reserve a couch because there is limited seating in La Suite. Failing that, there are also tables outside which are more child friendly in any event. Bon appétit mon amour! Limegrove Holetown, St James +1(246)271-8205

Pot Pourri at Gallery of Caribbean Art, Speightstown It's strange enough walking into the gallery when you've never been before because there is no way to expect what you see. We tend not to value Speightstown enough for how it has kept so much of this rock's heritage. Every time you go you feel as though you should go more often. The gallery is a massive space at the top of the stairs, filled wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling with Caribbean art. Once you feel you've done the rounds you're told there's another space at the end of the corridor... And that it's even fuller. Pot Pourri highlights four artists. Susan Alleyne-Forde Tracey Williams Melanie Blomgren Denzil Mann Melanie Blomgren was born, and grew up, in Sweden. She went to art college, worked in the fashion industry for five years and moved to Barbados in 1990. In Barbados she worked in the restaurant business for fifteen years and it was there that she developed a fascination for all the colourful characters that she encountered in the vibrant Barbados night scene - the expressions, painted faces, the outfits, the stories and the humour. During the daylight hours, Barbados's equally unique and colourful wildlife made a deep impression too; the monkeys, the birds and the flying fish. After the birth of her daughter in 2002, Melanie turned her hand to mosaics. Her underlying sense

Tracey Williams - Tappy Pond, St George

of humour has always guided her pieces, as it has her life. Denzil Mann is a full-time painter, working in watercolour, oil and acrylic. Born in Barbados in the parish of St. Michael in 1963, he was already painting aged 4. Denzil draws inspiration from nature and everyday life experiences. He holds a BA in Psychology from The University of the West Indies and believes that the creative process is as therapeutic as it is diverse. Denzil continues to produce exciting works from his St. Michael home studio. He takes every opportunity to share his artistic skills with neighbouring children, community groups and secondary school students who are preparing for exams and he enjoys interacting with people who have an interest in art.

Denzil Man - Neighbourhood Gossip

Tracey Williams brought out the beauty, colourful and sensuous nature of flowers, producing large floral studies through a primary passion for colour, which led to floral painting. She was trained by renowned artist Stanley Greaves and apprenticed in the studio of Alison Chapman-Andrews and himself. Here she also

rendered large anatomical paintings. “The I of Venus” represents for me a woman in all her aspects, whether young or mature, more complex, soft and feminine yet strong, bold, sexy and hard-working. To show this I portrayed women in my family, in the portrait of my daughter Calista: “Woman in a hat”
