Welcome to the Week 6 newsleYer.
Next week is a big week for our Year 6 students. They will be aYending their camp later in the week and on Saturday 10 June they will receive the Sacrament of ConfirmaEon. I wish them well for both of these important events and know they will be exemplary in their leadership, commitment and faith.
A quick reminder that the Parent and Caregiver Survey is sEll available for parents unEl the 12 June. A link was sent to you directly last week. This informaEon helps us make informed decisions about how we can improve our school so that your child/children will flourish.
Our Mission focus for this term is the Archbishops Lifelink Appeal which aims to promote understanding of the Church’s response to people in need within the community. Wednesday 7 June is the official launch of the Lifeline Appeal.
Save the date for Wednesday 9 August as we have Paul Litherland from Surf Online Safe coming out to run a student workshop and a parent workshop. In this ever changing world, this is an important workshop to highlight online safety for your children.
As ReconciliaEon Week draws to a close, I wish you a happy WA day on Monday. It’s a day for each of us to reflect and celebrate all the great things about our people, our lifestyle, our culture and our potenEal.
Enjoy the rest of the week.

WA Day 2023, Monday 5 June, is a day to celebrate all Western Australians and recognises everyone who has made and conEnues to make, Western Australia their home. We reflect and celebrate all the great things about our people, our lifestyle, our culture and our future.
School aYendance maYers as early as kindergarten. Children who regularly aYend school have opportuniEes to socialise, problem solve, and learn in an enriched environment. Studies show that children who miss too many days in Kindergarten and Pre-Primary, struggle academically in later years. It only takes one absence every two weeks for aYendance to be concerning as learning is missed. AYend today and achieve for a lifeEme.
Parents and caregivers can help by -
• Making sure your child aYends school every day unless they are ill
• Having a regular morning rouEne that helps your child prepare for school
• Solving any problems your child is having at school with their teacher as early as possible
• Planning vacaEons during non-school days
• Scheduling your child’s dental and medical appointments at the end of the school day
This year we are working in partnership to assist children in further developing their spelling skills and knowledge using the Soundwaves Spelling resource across the school. The focus for Year 1 to Year 6 for next week and Week 8 is -
Week 7 –m mm mb
· m mm mb is most frequently represented by the grapheme m (e.g. money, humble, camp).
The grapheme mm for m mm mb is seen in the middle of words, aher short vowel sounds (e.g. mammal, summer).
The grapheme mb is an unusual way to represent m mm mb (e.g. thumb, lamb). The grapheme mn is an unusual way to represent (e.g. autumn, column).
Week 8 –i_e y igh i ie
The grapheme igh for i_e y igh i ie is usually used before t Y (e.g. light, night).
· The grapheme y for i_e y igh i ie is usually used at the end of words (e.g. by, reply).
The grapheme eye in the word eye is an unusual way to represent i_e y igh i ie
· i_e y igh i ie is also the name of the leYer i.
When discussing i_e y igh i ie with students, always clarify you are talking about the phoneme, not the leYer name. For example, say ‘Which words have the sound i_e y igh i ie ?’ instead of ‘Which words have i_e y igh i ie ?’
Remember – All students from Year 1 to Year 6 are able to log into Soundwaves with their class code. Class codes are available from classroom teachers.
On Saturday 10 June, our Year Six children will receive the Sacrament of ConfirmaEon.
The gih of the Holy Spirit received at ConfirmaEon gives people a deeper iniEaEon into the ChrisEan community and strengthens the gihs they received at BapEsm. A ChrisEan receives all the basic spiritual gihs needed to relate with God and to live as Jesus taught through BapEsm and ConfirmaEon. The two sacraments are linked. The promises made during BapEsm are repeated during ConfirmaEon to make the link between these sacraments clear. In ConfirmaEon, candidates make these promises for themselves, whereas when they were bapEsed as babies, these promises were made on their behalf by their parents and godparents.
This year, Infant Jesus Parish will warmly welcome Archbishop Costelloe who will be presiding over each ConfirmaEon Mass assisted by Fr Greg.
The Sacrament of ConfirmaEon is the celebraEon of our anoinEng, our ‘commissioning’ by the Holy Spirit to love as Jesus loved. We are ‘sealed with the Gih of the Holy Spirit’. The Gihs of the Holy Spirit - Wisdom, Counsel, Piety, Understanding, Knowledge, ForEtude and Fear of the Lord are the life of Jesus within us. We also share the fruits of the Spirit - Joy, Peace, PaEence, Kindness, Goodness, Trusaulness, Gentleness and Self-control in following the example of Jesus.
Tomorrow, the Year Six children conEnue their preparaEon at the ConfirmaEon Retreat at Infant Jesus Parish.
The Archbishop’s Official Launch of Lifelink Day in 2023 is Wednesday 7 June. On this day both Archbishop Timothy Costelloe and Auxiliary Bishop Don Sproxton will present informaEon about the current work of Lifelink in the Perth Archdiocese, the history of Lifelink and the many agencies that are supported by Lifelink.
This Eme provides a fantasEc opportunity for students to join together to show their support for the many Church social service agencies that reach out to provide pracEcal care and direct assistance to thousands of people in need each year.
Next week the children will be learning more about the Lifelink agencies and recognising how they can support this valuable work.
Joan was 70 years old when she became homeless. Aher her beloved husband of 50 years died, Joan’s eldest daughter stole all of her savings, and transferred the house into her own name. Then they kicked Joan out of the family home and leh her on the street. She was desperate, terrified and completely alone.
This winter, women like Joan urgently need your help. Donate now and you’ll help provide emergency accommodaEon so vulnerable older women have a safe place to sleep. You’ll help give nutriEous meals and warm clothing to keep them healthy and warm. And you’ll help give the support they need to rebuild their life – and escape homelessness.
More InformaEon will available in next weeks weekly update regarding how students can help with this appeal.
Please give generously. hYps://donate.vinnies.org.au/winterwarmth
In HumaniEes and Social Sciences, we have been learning about the journeys of explorers before the 18th Century.
To complement this learning, we visited the WA Shipwrecks Museum to learn about Willem de Vlamingh.
Willem de Vlamingh was a Dutch navigator who explored the west coast of ‘New Holland’ in the late 17th Century.
During our visit, we parEcipated in engaging role-play acEviEes which highlighted the challenges and achievements of de Vlamingh’s expediEon. We also had the opportunity to explore the museum where we found interesEng maps, journal entries and pictures.
We had a great Eme. Thank you to our amazing parent helpers who assisted on the day.
In Year One we have been wriEng recounts in class. We learnt that a recount is a piece of wriEng that retells an event that has already occurred. The children have been focusing on including events in sequenEal order and are beginning to experiment with using descripEve language in their wriEng.
Both Year One classes visited the Pre-Primary playground for an opportunity to play and explore.
We then returned to class where the children discussed what they saw and did.
Following this, they wrote a recount of our exciEng excursion to Pre-Primary.
It was a fun acEvity and the children wrote some amazing recounts.

Being a parent/carer of one or more children can be plenty of fun, but at Emes can be a daunEng juggling task. When combined with work or other issues (stress, lack of sleep, marital conflicts, caring for your own parents, financial issues etc) it can become overwhelming. The good news is, there is support around, you can reach out and it may just be what you need to keep smiling.
