NaXonal Walk Safely to School Day

Primary school aged children across Australia will make those important steps towards a healthier future by parYcipaYng in NaYonal Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 10 May 2024. Now in its 23rd year, this annual event has joined forces with NaXonal Road Safety Week to further draw the spotlight on road safety and support the importance of regular walking, not just on 10 May, but every day.

NaYonal Walk Safely to School Day is a community iniYaYve that aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits that regular walking (especially to and from school) can provide for the long term well-being of our children. Apart from the physical benefits, regular walking also has a favourable impact on children's cogniYve and academic performance.

Soundwaves

Week 4 -

• We oSen use ay for at the end of words (e.g. say, play, spray, today, holiday). (Helpful Hint)

• We do not use ai for at the end of words (e.g. aim, rain, tail, paint, brain). (Helpful Hint)

• The grapheme ea is an unusual way to represent (e.g. great, steak).

• The graphemes e, e_e, et and ee can represent (e.g. cafe, fete, ballet, entree). Words containing e, e_e, et, or ee for usually originate from French.

• is also the name of the leMer a. When discussing with students, always clarify you are talking about the phoneme, not the leMer name. For example, say ‘Which words have the sound ?’ instead of ‘Which words have ?’

Week 5 -

• is most frequently represented by the grapheme l (e.g. leg, release, pencil).

• We usually use ll aSer short vowel sounds at the end of single-syllable words (e.g. spill, smell). (Helpful Hint)

• It can be hard to hear in words ending in le (e.g. table, people), which is why they can be segmented two ways. If you hear for le, write le in one box. If you hear for le, write le across two boxes.

Week 6 -

• The grapheme ee for is usually used in the middle or at the end of words (e.g. see, green). Very few words begin with ee for .

• We oSen use y for at the end of words (e.g. any, jelly, baby, puppy, twenty). We do not usually use y for at the start or in the middle of words. (Helpful Hint)

• The grapheme ey for is usually used at the end of words (e.g. honey, valley).

• The grapheme eo in the word people is an unusual way to represent .

• is also the name of the leMer e. When discussing with students, always clarify you are talking about the phoneme, not the leMer name. For example, say ‘Which words have the sound ?’ instead of ‘Which words have ?’

Laudato Si’ Week

Laudato Si' Week first began as a way to celebrate the first anniversary of Pope Francis' world-changing papal encyclical leMer, “Laudato Si': On Care For Our Common Home.”

Pope Francis’ encyclical has helped the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics understand that “everything is connected” and put previous Catholic teachings in the context of today’s ecological crisis and climate emergency.

At school, our children are passionate about caring for the environment. If you would like to acknowledge this special week at home, the Catholic Office for JusYce, Ecology and Peace have created a range of acYviYes and reflecYons- hMps://laudatosiweek.org/resources/

Ways Kids Can Help Save The Environment:

Use a reusable water container

· Recycle or up-cycle paper

Turn off the lights

Unplug chargers to save electricity

· Turn of taps to save water

· Donate toys and clothes

· Help recycle cans and plasYc boMles

Learn to cook fun, plant based meals

Pentecost

Pentecost celebrates 50 days aSer Easter Sunday. This year, Pentecost falls on Sunday 19 May.

Pentecost is oSen referred to as the birthday of the Church because on this day the apostles went out among the people and began sharing Jesus’ message and the mission of the Church.

On the day of Pentecost, the Apostles were all gathered together in one place and God sent the Holy Spirit to give them the power to teach others about Jesus. When the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit, they had the ability to speak in languages that they didn't even know, so that they could tell everyone about Jesus.

The Holy Spirit is sYll with people today as they draw on the strength and guidance of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

Before the Holy Spirit came to the Apostles, they were afraid to teach others about Jesus. Pentecost changed them completely, so that they had the courage to teach openly and freely about Jesus. As the Apostles taught about Jesus in different communiYes, thousands of those who heard them also became ChrisYans.

Like the Apostles at Pentecost, Catholics today receive the Holy Spirit. We do so through the Sacrament of ConfirmaYon that are Year Six students will receive later in this term.

Sunday 19 May is Pentecost - please join the Parish to celebrate the birth day of the Church.
