We are Called Advent Advent is a me when Chris ans prepare for the coming of Jesus into the world. Advent is a season of hope and wai ng. Advent is a me of prepara on for celebra ng the birth of Jesus. People prepare by ge ng their lives into order by praying, reading Scripture, and giving to the poor. Advent is a me to refocus on Christ. The people of the Old Testament never lost hope as they waited for God to send the Messiah. The prophets, like Micah, told the people of the Old Testament to prepare for the coming of a Messiah, as promised by God. They waited, hoped and trusted God. Messiah means ‘Anointed one of God’. The Messiah would be someone lled with the Spirit of God and he would save his people and con nue to reveal how God loves all people. During Advent Chris ans: 1. Listen to stories of the prophets, like Micah 2. Remember the wai ng by the prophets, and people of Israel for the coming of the Messiah. 3. They remember that the Messiah came for all but in par cular the poor, the outcast, the sick and the marginalised. 4. Con nue to pray to God as Jesus taught. Through a strengthened rela onship with God through prayer, Chris ans can begin to nd answers to their ‘human heart’ ques ons by re ec ng on: • God’s loving rela onship with the people of the Old Testament, • the example of Jesus, • Scripture, • the example of holy people, • the example of people in their life, and • daily events. As Catholics, we are excitedly preparing to celebrate the beginning of the Season of Advent this Sunday 3 December. The word ‘Advent’ means ‘coming’. During Advent an Advent wreath is displayed in the Church. When we light the candles on the wreath, it symbolises the coming of light (Jesus) into the world. First week of Advent - light the 1st candle (violet): represents hope Second week of Advent - light the 1st and 2nd candles (violet): represents peace Third week of Advent - light the 1st, 2nd and 3rd candles (rose): represents joy Fourth week of Advent - light the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th candles (violet): represents love The central white candle is lit on Christmas Day and represents Christ. Advent wreaths can also be displayed at school or at home. The Advent wreath helps us keep our thoughts focused on the coming of Jesus at Christmas. At home, your family could gather around the wreath at a set me of the day as a family member lights the relevant candle.

Year Three

Impressionists of the Future Year Three students have immersed themselves into the life and art of Claude Monet this term. A er learning all about Monet’s early life, career, inspira ons and famous artwork students were ready to give impressionism a go. Impressionism is a style of art that depicts a moment in me, using light, shadow, and long brush strokes to o en re ect a scene in nature. Students selected a famous Monet art piece to replicate using oil pastels, and water colours. This involved planning out and sketching their masterpiece, using the oil pastels to de ne lines giving the illusion of texture, before adding water colour and mixing colours to mimic the art piece they chose.
