Tapasin Susan Philipszin ensimmäisen kerran matkalla Folkstonen triennaaliin vuonna 2008. Junamatkan aikana Susan kertoi valmistumassa olevasta uudesta teoksesta. Pathetic Fallacy oli toteutettu – kuten kaikki muutkin Folkstonetriennaalin teokset – julkiseen tilaan. Folkstone on entinen kesälomakaupunki, jonne brittiläinen yläluokka 1900-luvun alussa matkusti lomailemaan upeisiin maisemiin Englannin kanaalin rannalle. Näkymä merelle on huikea ja meren läsnäolon tuntee lähes kaikkialla. Philipszin lauluteos kertoi suhteesta menneisyyteen, muutoksesta, kaipuusta ja meren suomasta lohdusta. Teos oli sijoitettu puiseen katokseen, joka oli rakennettu suojaisaksi paikaksi missä voi istua ja katsella merelle. Tällaisena se ei kuitenkaan koskaan löytänyt omaa paikkaansa, vaan siitä tuli kodittomien yösija ja nuorten hengailupaikka. Philipsz kirjoittaa näyttelykirjassa: ”Nykyään Folkstonesta on tullut monen turvapaikan hakijan koti. Aava meri on varmasti jatkuva muistutus siitä, miten kaukana he ovat kotoaan.”

Susan Philipsziä on kiinnostanut taiteilijan uransa alusta asti työskentely julkisessa tilassa. Ensiksi julkinen tila oli lähestulkoon ainoa paikka missä oli mahdollista esiintyä nuorena taiteilijana, mutta myöhemmin julkisessa tilassa työskentely on merkinnyt yhä tärkeämmiksi muodostuneita sisältöjä hänen teoksiinsa. Merkittävä osa Philipszin lauluteoksia on tila, paikka ja arkkitehtuuri, jossa teos esitetään. Teoksen kokija kutoo laulun ja tilan yhdistelmään oman erityisen kokemuksensa itsestään osaksi tuota tilannetta, jossa psykofyysinen yhdistyy esteettis-arkkitehtooniseen. Näin myös esimerkiksi teoksessa Lost Reflection Münsterissä 2007, joka oli erityisen mieleenpainuva työryhmämme jäsenille. Philipszin teokset ovat emotionaalisia, ne vetoavat melankoliseen mieleen, mutta tunnekokemus kuljettaa katsojan teoksen syvällisempiin sisältöihin. IHME-nykytaidefestivaalin asiantuntijatyöryhmä valitsi Susanin toteuttamaan järjestyksessä toisen IHME-teoksen näistä syistä. Tarkoituksemme on joka vuosi esitellä yleisölle nykytaiteilija, jota kiinnostaa julkinen tila toimintaympäristönä, ja tuottaa teos, joka luo tavallisesta poikkeavan tilanteen tuttuun ympäristöömme.

Aloitimme keskustelun yhteistyöstä Folkstonessa ja sovimme Philipszin ensimmäisestä vierailusta Helsinkiin, joka tapahtui lokakuussa 2008. Kiertelimme kaupungilla ja pohdimme potentiaalisia sijoituspaikkoja uudelle teokselle. Tällä matkalla Susan löysi eri puolilta kaupunkia holvikäytäviä, joissa oli mielenkiintoinen akustiikka. Saavuimme Helsingin rautatieasemalle ja sen keskushalliin.

Tila kiinnosti Susania akustiikan vuoksi, vaikka se oli kovin haasteellinen kuulutusten ja muun hälyn takia. Aluksi häntä kiinnosti keskushallin lisäksi myös Kaisaniemen ja aseman yhdistävä rautatielaitureiden alla kulkeva käytävä. Hän pohti mahdollisuutta toteuttaa teos, joka olisi läsnä molemmissa paikoissa.

Sillä välin kun IHME-teoksen idea kypsyi, syntyi IHME-editio. IHME-editio on taideteos, joka on jotakin toistettavaa tai monistettavaa. Suomen kielen sana `ihme´ antaa sille oman lisänsä, sillä puhekielessä ihme tarkoittaa myös jotakin kummallista, outoa ja uteliaisuutta herättävää. Siksi IHME-editio on jotakin aivan muuta kuin signeerattu ja numeroitu, paperille painettu perinteinen taideteoseditio. IHME-editio toteutetaan yleensä syksyllä julkistaessamme IHMEteoksen tekijän, eräänlaisena esittelynä valitun taiteilijan tuotantoon. Susan Philipsz lähetti seuraavan ehdotuksen 16. elokuuta 2009: ”Tehdessäni taustatyötä IHME-teosta varten sain selville että Suomessa on kehtolauluperinne, jossa kuoleman ja väkivallan teemat ovat hyvin vahvat. Näitä kutsutaan Tuonelan kehtolauluiksi. Nämä kehtolaulut jaetaan lauluihin, jotka liittyvät suremiseen, kun lapsen kuolema on todennäköinen huonojen olojen vuoksi ja lauluihin, joissa lasta uhataan väkivallalla tai kuolemalla ellei tämä nukahda. Haluan tutkia tätä aihepiiriä tulevaa teostani varten.

IHME-editiota varten haluaisin tallentaa sarjan itse laulamiani kehtolauluja ja soittaa ne mustaa taustaa vasten Yleisradion tv-kanavalla ohjelmien päättymisen jälkeen. Aion tallentaa Tuonelan kehtolauluja, mutta myös muita kehtolauluja, jotka ovat tuttuja muista kulttuurisista yhteyksistä. Esimerkiksi kulttielokuvaan Uhrijuhla (Robin Hardy, 1973) on sävelletty hyvin yksinkertainen ja tehokas kehtolaulu. Elokuvan päähenkilö poliisipäällikkö Howie puetaan, voidellaan ja hänelle lauletaan ennen kuin hänet poltetaan osana uhrirituaalia. Toinen esimerkki on teemasävel 1960-luvun kauhuelokuvassa Rosemaryn painajainen. Elokuvassa päähenkilöä esittävän Mia Farrow´n ääni hyräilee tätä kehtolaulua vielä syntymättömälle lapselleen.

Menetyksen, kaipuun ja kuolevaisuuden teemat ovat sisäänrakennettuja näissä kehtolauluissa sekä myös teemoja, jotka toistuvat omassa tuotannossani. Pahaenteinen vaikutelma, jonka kehoton ääneni saattaa synnyttää yöllä ohjelmien päätyttyä, dramatisoi näitä teemoja samalla kun se herättää muistin ja korostaa kokijan kokemusta itsestään.”

Lopulliseen IHME-editioon valikoituivat lopulta yllä mainitut kahden kauhuelokuvaklassikon kehtolaulut, Tuonelan kehtolaulut jäivät vielä tässä vaiheessa odottamaan. Teoksen nimeksi tuli Sleep Close and Fast ja se esitettiin YLEn Teema-kanavalla kahden viikon ajan aina kun ohjelmat päivän päätteeksi päättyivät. Kanavan erityisyyttä on sen keskittyminen dokumentteihin, tieteeseen ja kulttuuriin lähtökohtanaan oppiminen. Kanavalla on erittäin korkeatasoinen ohjelmatarjonta ja varsinkin lauantai-illan temaattinen kokonaisuus on vertaansa vailla. Tähän yhteyteen suunniteltiin IHME-editionkin esitysten aloitus, jolloin ensimmäisen esitysillan ohjelman olisivat muodostaneet dokumentti Rosemaryn painajaisen kehtolaulun säveltäjästä puolalaisesta Krzysztof Komedasta, Rosemaryn painajainen -elokuva ja Philipszin editio. Valitettavasti tämä ei koskaan toteutunut ohjelmahankinnallisista syistä. Teema ei lopulta voinut esittää täysin mustaa kuvaruutua, joten lopullisessa teoksessa oli IHME-ilmeen mustavalkoista raidoitusta kuvaruudun alareunassa ilmaisemassa katsojalle suunniteltua ohjelmallista kestoa.

Sleep Close and Fast -teoksen vaikuttavuus television kontekstissa perustui vähäeleisyyteen, yllättävään intiimiyteen ja visuaaliseen hiljaisuuteen kaiken sen kovaäänisen mainonnan ja ohjelmatarjonnan keskellä, mikä televisioon liittyy.

Susanin laulu, josta voi kuulla hengityksen ja tauot, viesti ”väärässä paikassa” kuultavaa yksityisyyttä, kauneutta, mutta myös aavemaista läsnäoloa mikä puolestaan yhdistyi kauhuelokuvista peräisin olevien kehtolaulujen tunnelman kanssa. Näihin kehtolauluihin liittyvä nurinkurisuus – laulu ei toivota hyvää yötä vaan jotakin päinvastaista, pelottavaa ja hereillä pitävää – oli kiehtovaa.

Se sai miettimään teoksen merkillistä läsnäoloa televisiolähetyksessä, televisioohjelmien parissa vietettyä aikaa ja siellä esitettävän materiaalin homogeenisyyttä.

IHME-edition valmistumisen jälkeen Philipsz jatkoi Tuonelan kehtolaulujen kuuntelemista ja niiden taustojen tutkimista. Hän lähetti helmikuun ensimmäisenä päivänä 2010 seuraavan ehdotuksen IHME-teokseksi: ”Olen valinnut laulun nimeltään Sydämeni laulu Jean Sibeliuksen säveltämänä, siinä on muistoja herättävät sanat, arvoitukselliset ja tummasävyiset, kun taas sävellys on erittäin rauhoittava ja kaunis.

Ehdotan, että käyttäisin tätä tunnettua suomalaista sävelmää sijoittamalla sen hyvin julkiseen yhteyteen Helsingin päärautatieaseman keskushalliin.

Päärautatieaseman keskushalli on majesteettinen, avoin tila, valo lankeaa kaari-ikkunoista luoden dramaattiset silhuetit lattiaan. Korkea holvikatto, joka sulkee tilan, synnyttää sinne hyvin erityisen akustiikan. Haluan tässä teoksessa asettaa vastakkain kehtolaulun intiimin tunnelman sekä kiireen ja liikkeen Suomen vilkkaimmassa paikassa, jonka läpi kulkee 200 000 ihmistä päivittäin.

Kuunnellessani rautatieaseman ääniä ajattelin New Yorkin Grand Central -rautatieaseman Kuiskausgalleriaa, akustista ilmiötä, joka mahdollistaa tilan yhdessä kulmassa kuiskatun viestin kuulemisen tilan vastakkaisessa kulmassa.

Tallenne, jossa ääneni laulaa Sydämeni laulua, kuuluu aika ajoin hallin läpi ja terävöityy liikkuessaan hallin toiselta puolelta toiselle synnyttäen kuiskausgalleriaefektin. Kehoton ääni ehdottaa aavemaista tai eteeristä läsnäoloa, jota laulun sanat vahvistavat.

Aseman äänet vaihtelevat koko ajan ja vilkkaimpina aikoina teoksen äänen vaikutus on hädin tuskin kuultavissa. Teoksen ääni, joka tietyin väliajoin kuuluu hallissa, toimii enemmänkin interventiona, se leikkaa asemahallin arkisia ääniä ja luo odottamattoman kohtaamisen. Kun kuuntelee jotakin intiimiä, yksityistä julkisessa tilassa, sillä voi olla levottomuutta aiheuttava vaikutus, se saa kokijan tietoisemmaksi ympäristöstään, arvostamaan juuri sitä hetkeä.

Uskontotieteen emeritusprofessori Juha Pentikäinen selvitti IHME-päivillä pitämässään puheenvuorossa, että Tuonelan kehtolauluja esiintyy ainoastaan itämerensuomalaisten kansojen parissa. Kysymykseen siitä miksi näin on, Pentikäinen vastasi arvelevansa vastauksen liittyvän suomen kieleen, sen sanastoon ja henkisyyteen. ”Suomen kieli on harvinaisen henkinen kieli. Suomalainen perinne laulaa kuolemasta. Meillä on kymmenkunta sanaa kuolemalle ja niillä kaikilla on oma merkityksensä: surma (kohtalo), kuolema, tuoni, tauti… ja seitsemän sanaa sille, joka kuolee löyly, henki, sielu... Sanavarasto, joka liittyy kuolemaan ja henkisyyteen on hyvin rikas, ja se on säilynyt sanoissa, mielessä ja perinteissä. Heideggerin sanoin, ihminen ymmärtää olemassaolonsa vasta kun ymmärtää kuolevaisuutensa.”

Kun päivä laskee -teoksesta on löydettävissä kaikki Philipszin tuotannolle ominaiset tunnusmerkit: teos on tehty Susanin äänestä, laulua ei säestetä soittimin, nauhoite on suora eli teoksessa voi kuulla Susanin hengityksen ja tauot. Rautatieaseman keskushallissa hallin omat äänet, tilan äänet ja Susanin teoksen laulu, ääni tilassa, sekoittuvat yhteen. Tyypillistä Philipszin teoksille on myös se, että teoksia ei voi tallentaa, ne täytyy kokea paikan päällä ja olla niiden kanssa vuorovaikutuksessa.

Lynne Cooke toi luennossaan ”Susan Philipsz in Context” esiin mielenkiintoisen yhtymäkohdan Philipszin tuotannon ja minimalismin välillä. Fenomenologisesti koettava taide, johon olennaisesti liittyy fyysinen kokemus teoksen kanssa, kuten esimerkiksi Richard Serran, Robert Morrisin tai Donald Juddin teoksissa, toimii saman logiikan mukaan kuin monet Philipszin teokset. Cooke toi esiin myös, kuinka tärkeää pohjatyötä John Cagen ja Max Neuhausin kaltaiset tekijät tekivät ääneen perustuvalle nykytaiteelle tuodessaan 1960-luvulla ympäristön äänet osaksi taideteosta ja vapauttaessaan kuulijan autoritäärisen äänen vaikutuksesta. Kuulijalle tuli mahdolliseksi keskittyä kuuntelemaan ei-hierarkista melua, niin pitkäksi ajaksi kuin itse halusi. Kuulija sai kuunnella ympäristönääniä ja kestoa (durance) rakenteettomana ajallisena kokemuksena pikemminkin kuin perinteisistä musiikkiteoksista tuttuna ”alusta loppuun” -ajallisuutena (temporality).

Susan Philipszin IHME-teoksessa yhdistyy myös 1800-luvun lopun suomalaisen kansallisromanttisen kulttuurin merkittäviä tekijöitä ja taideteoksia.

Suomalaiselle yleisölle nimet Kivi, Saarinen ja Sibelius ovatkin hyvin tuttuja.

Eliel Saarinen (1873–1950) on kansainvälisesti tunnetuimpia arkkitehtejamme, joka voitti Helsingin uuden rautatieaseman suunnittelukilpailun vuonna 1904.

Viidentoista vuoden rakennustyön jälkeen asema vihittiin käyttöön 5. maaliskuuta 1919. Susan halusi sijoittaa teoksensa aseman juhlalliseen keskushalliin ja saada äänen kulkemaan ääniputouksen tavoin holvikaarta pitkin sen toiselta reunalta toiselle.

Aleksis Kivi (1843–1872) puolestaan on Suomen kansalliskirjailija, jota kutsutaan usein suomalaisen kirjallisuuden isäksi. Hänen tunnetuin teoksensa on Seitsemän veljestä (1870), josta puhutaan usein ensimmäisenä suomenkielisenä romaanina. Susanin valitseman laulun sanat löytyvät juuri tästä kirjasta. Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) puolestaan oli suomalainen kansallisromanttisen taidemusiikin säveltäjä ja on edelleen kansainvälisesti tunnetuin ja esitetyin suomalainen säveltäjä. Sydämeni laulu on tunnetuinta Sibeliusta. Hän sävelsi sitä vaimonsa Ainon odottaessa perheeseen kolmatta tytärtä vuonna 1898. Kirsti-­tytär kuitenkin kuoli heti alkuvuodesta 1900. Kerrotaan, että kun tytär menehtyi, Sibelius soitti kuolleelle lapselleen pianolla tämän teoksen.

Sibeliuksen Sydämeni laulu on sävelletty mieskuorolle. Sen vuoksi Carolyn Christov-Bakargievin tekemä huomio siitä, miten Susanin yksinäinen ääni tässä teoksessa samaan tapaan kuin Kansainvälisessäkin (1999–2000) ilmaisee kuoron kaipuuta ts. puuttuvaa väkijoukkoa, on osuva. Mutta toisaalta herkkä naisääni laulamassa Sydämeni laulua yksin ja ilman säestystä, on mainittua esitysperinnettä rikkova lähetymistapa. Christov-Bakargievin jatkaakin, että Philipszin taiteen todellinen poliittinen luonne on ei-tuotannollisen toiminnan ylistys ja toisto, joka murtaa perinteiden otteen meistä.

Suomalainen äänitaiteilija ja tutkija Heidi Fast toteutti vuoden 2010 IHME-päivillä Iltalaulukävely -nimisen osallistavan teoksen. Iltalaulukävely kutsui kaupunkilaisia yhteen kävelylle, jonka aikana oli mahdollista halutessaan tuottaa vokaalista ääntä yhdessä, ei-sanallista, laulullista, mutta ei tiettyyn melodiaan liittyvää ääntä. Fast pohti luennossaan ääntä julkisessa tilassa, sen ongelmallisuutta ja mahdollisuuksia. Julkisessa tilassa tapahtuviin taideteoksiin ja tapahtumiin sisältyy eettinen puoli, joka liittyy meidän kaikkia aisteja piirittävään informaatioon. Fast kysyy, mitä taide voi enää tehdä tai antaa näissä olosuhteissa koska kaikkea on potentiaalisesti liikaa, varsinkin ääntä, jonka ominaisuuksia ovat laajentuminen ja tunkeutuminen. Hänen mukaansa taide voi luoda tilanteita, tilaa luovalle ja tunteelliselle ruumiillisuudelle ja mielelle. Taide voi lisätä myötätunnon kokemusta ja hienovaraisempia kommunikaation muotoja olla yhdessä, pieniä, hitaita ja hiljaisia tekoja.

Minulta kysytään usein syytä siihen, miksi tuotamme vain yhden teoksen vuodessa. Miksi ei useampaa? Festivaalin luonnehan on paljoutta, ”jokaiselle jotakin” -idean pohjalta toteutettavaa tarjontaa erilaisille yleisöille. Koemme, että on tärkeää voida tarjota yleisölle juuri yksi IHME-teos julkisessa tilassa vuodessa ja mahdollistaa keskittyminen vain yhteen teokseen niin tuotannossa kuin vastaanotossakin. Teos, joka IHMEen puitteissa syntyy, on yleensä uusi, ennennäkemätön ja -kokematon; pyrimme antamaan myös taiteilijalle mahdollisuuden tehdä jotakin uutta. Julkiseen tilaan tuotettava teos on lähtökohta muun festivaaliohjelman suunnittelulle, jolloin koko tapahtuman sisällölliset lähtökohdat ovat tässä teoksessa, vaikka ohjelmistossa käsitellään myös muita ajankohtaisia aiheita. IHME-nykytaidefestivaalin tavoitteena on tehdä nykytaiteesta saavutettavampaa ja edesauttaa keskustelua siitä, mitä on yhdessä koettu. Tärkeää on panostaa laatuun eikä määrään. Kulutusyhteiskunnassa, jossa elämme, taiteen kokemisesta on tullut yhä enemmän kulutustavaraa, tuote muiden joukossa ja siksi säätiön päätös keskittyä yhteen teokseen voidaan nähdä myös eettisenä kannanottona.

I met Susan Philipsz the first time on my way to the Folkstone Triennial in 2008.

Susan told me about the new work she was preparing for the occasion. Pathetic Fallacy – as all the other works at the Folkstone Triennial – was realized into public space. Folkstone is a former summer holiday resort where the British upper class used go in the early 20th century to vacation amidst the beautiful sceneries by the English Channel. The view over the sea is breathtaking and you can feel the presence of the sea almost everywhere. Philipsz’ work of art spoke of our relationship to the past, of change, longing and the comfort bestowed by the sea. The work was situated within a wooden lookout post which had been built to serve as a sheltered place where people could sit and gaze at the sea.

It never did, however, find its place as such, but instead became a hang-out for homeless people and youngsters. Philipsz writes in her exhibition catalog: “Nowadays, Folkstone has become a shelter for many seeking asylum. The vast open sea must be a constant reminder of how far from home they are.”

Susan Philipsz has ever since the start of her career been interested in working in public spaces. They were, first, practically the only place where it was possible to work as a young artist, but, later, working in public spaces has meant content that has become increasingly important for her works. An essential part of her sound works is the space, location and architectural environment where they are presented. The people experiencing the works weave their own special experience of themselves into that mixture of song and space, to become part of a situation where the psycho-physical is joined with the estheticarchitectural. This is also the case with, for example, the work Lost Reflection in Münster 2007, which was especially memorable for the members of our team.

Philipsz’ works are emotional, they appeal to the melancholic mind, but the emotional experience leads the viewer to the deeper contents of the works. It was for these reasons that the expert team for the IHME Contemporary Art Festival chose Susan to realize the second IHME Project. Our aim is to every year introduce to the public a contemporary artist who is interested in public space as an operating environment and in producing a work that creates an out-of-the-ordinary situation into our familiar surroundings.

We started to discuss the possibility of cooperation in Folkstone and made arrangements for Philipsz’ first visit to Helsinki, which took place in October 2008. We wandered around the city and reflected on potential locations for a new work. During this visit, Susan found various archways in different parts of the city with interesting acoustics. We came to the Central Railway Station and its main hall. Susan found the space interesting because of its acoustics, even though it was quite challenging due to all the announcements and other noise.

At first she was also interested in the passage running under the railway platforms and joining the Kaisaniemi park with the station. She pondered on the possibility of realizing a work that would be present in both places.

While the idea for the IHME project evolved, the IHME Edition was born. An IHME Edition is an artwork that is somehow repeatable or replicable. The Finnish word “ihme” brings in its own addition, since in colloquial speech it means something weird, strange and curious. Thus, an IHME Edition is something quite different from a signed and numbered, traditional artwork edition printed on paper. The IHME Edition is usually realized in the autumn when we publicly announce who the artist for the next IHME Project will be, as a kind of introduction to the works of the chosen artist. Susan Philipsz sent us the following proposal on 16 August 2009: “While researching my IHME project I found out that there is a tradition of lullabies from Finland where themes of death and violence are very strong. These are called the Finnish Tuonela lullabies. In this tradition the lullabies are divided between mourning songs where the death of the child is anticipated because of domestic hardship or threat songs where the child is threatened with violence or death if he or she does not go to sleep. I felt that this was an area I would like to explore for my project.

For our initial edition I propose to record a series of lullabies in my own voice and to have them play to a black screen on the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) after closedown. I will record traditional Finnish Tuonela lullabies but I will also record lullabies that occur in other cultural contexts. For example there is a very simple but effective lullaby written for the cult film ‘The Wicker Man’ (Robin Hardy, 1973). In this film the main protagonist, Police Sergeant Howie, is dressed, anointed and sung to before he is burned in a ritual sacrifice. Another example is the theme tune to the 60’s horror film ‘Rosemary’s Baby’. In this film´s opening credits that main actress Mia Farrow’s voice can be heard humming a lullaby to her as yet unborn baby.

Themes of loss, longing and mortality are integral to the original lullabies and are themes that recur often in my own work. The sinister effect my disembodied voice might have when experienced late at night after closedown would dramatize these themes while evoking memory and heightening one’s own sense of self.”

The lullabies of the mentioned two horror film classics were chosen for the final IHME Edition. At this point the Tuonela lullabies were still set aside to wait.

The work was named Sleep Close and Fast, and for two weeks it was broadcast after closedown on the YLE Teema TV channel. The channel has a special emphasis on documentaries, science and culture, based on the objectives of learning. It offers very high-quality programming and especially the thematic entities shown on Saturday evenings are unique in their kind. It was into this context that the opening for our IHME Editions was designed, with the idea that the programming for the first broadcasting evening would have been made up of a documentary on the composer of the lullaby for Rosemary’s Baby, Krzysztof Komeda, the film Rosemary´s Baby and Philipsz’ IHME Edition. Unfortunately, this plan was never realized, for program acquisition reasons. In the end, Teema was not able to broadcast an entirely black screen, so the final work included the red-and-white stripes of the IHME visual image running along the bottom of the screen to show the viewers the planned program duration.

The impact of Sleep Close and Fast in the context of television was based on a certain minimalism of expression, surprising intimacy and visual silence, amidst all the loud advertising and program offering that TV entails. Philipsz’s song,

where the breathing and pauses could be heard, communicated a privacy, beauty, that is heard “in a wrong place”, but also a ghostly presence which in turn was combined with the atmosphere of the lullabies from the horror movies. The contrariety of these lullabies – the song doesn’t wish goodnight but something the opposite, that is scary and will keep you awake – was fascinating, it made us think of the extraordinary presence of the work in a TV broadcast, the time we spend watching TV and the homogeneousness of the material that is shown.

After completing the IHME Edition, Philipsz continued listening to the Tuonela lullabies and researching their backgrounds. On the first day of February 2010, she sent us this proposal for an IHME Project: “I have chosen the song Sydämeni Laulu (Song of My Heart) set to music by Jean Sibelius that has very evocative lyrics, which are cryptic and dark, while the tune is very calming and beautiful.

I propose to appropriate this familiar Finnish tune by having it placed in the very public context of the Main Hall of Helsinki’s Central Railway Station.

The Main Hall of the Railway Station is a majestic and generous space, the light streams through the arched windows creating dramatic silhouettes against the floor. The high vaulted ellipsoid ceiling that encloses the space creates a very special acoustic. In this project I want to contrast the intimacy of the lullaby with the hustle and movement of the most traversed public building in Finland, where over 200,000 people pass through every day. While listening to the ambient sounds of the railway station I began to think about the ‘Whispering Gallery’ in Grand Central Station in New York, an acoustic phenomenon that allows one to whisper into a corner of the space only to be heard clearly in the opposite corner. Recordings of my own voice singing Sydämeni laulu (Song of My Heart) will be heard throughout the hall intermittently that will hone the sound to points on either sides of the space, creating a ‘whispering gallery’ effect. The sound of disembodied voices may suggest a spectral or ethereal presence that is echoed in the words of the song.

The ambient sounds of the train station vary all the time and at the busier times the sound may have more of a subliminal effect. However the sound that you hear at intervals will act more as an intervention, cutting across the ambient noises of the station where passersby may happen upon it unexpectedly. Listening to something that is intimate or private in public can have an unsettling effect, making people more aware of their environment, appreciating the qualities of the here and now.”

Juha Pentikäinen, professor emeritus of comparative religion, confirmed that death-wish lullabies only exist among Baltic-Finnish peoples. When asked why this was so, Pentikäinen replied that he suspected that the answer could be found in the Finnish language, its vocabulary and spirituality. “Finnish is an exceptionally spiritual language. The Finnish tradition sings about death. We have around ten words for death and they all have their own specific meaning: ‘surma’, ‘kuolema’, ‘tuoni’, ‘tauti’, and seven words for the thing that dies: ‘löyly’, ‘henki’, ‘sielu’... The vocabulary connected with death and spirituality is very rich and it has prevailed in words, minds and traditions.To adapt Heidegger’s words: “Man can only understand his existence when he understands his mortality.”

When Day Closes possesses all the features characteristic of Philipsz’ artistic production: The work is made up of Susan’s voice, it is not accompanied with instruments, the recording is direct ie. Susan’s breathing and pauses can be heard in it. In the Main Hall of the Central Railway Station the halls’ own sounds, the sounds of the space and the song of Susan’s work, the sound in the space, are mixed together. What is also typical of her works is that they cannot be recorded, they have to be experienced on site and they have to be interacted with.

Lynne Cooke revealed in her lecture “Susan Philipsz in Context” an interesting connection between Philipsz’ works and minimalism. Phenomenologically experienced art, which is integrally linked to a physical experience with the work, such as the works of Richard Serra, Robert Morris or Donald Judd, works according to the same logic as many of Philipsz’ works. Cooke also pointed out how important the groundwork carried out by artists-musicians like John Cage and Max Neuhaus was to sound-based art when they brought in the 1960s the surrounding sounds to be part of an artwork and freed the listener from the influence of authoritarian sound. It enabled the listeners to concentrate on listening to non-hierarchical noise for as long as they wished. They could listen to the surrounding sounds and durance as an unstructured temporal experience rather than as “from beginning to end” temporality familiar from traditional works of music.

In Susan Philipsz’ IHME Project also many of the important authors and creative works of the Finnish national romantic culture in the late 19th century meet. For Finnish audiences the names Kivi, Saarinen and Sibelius are more than familiar. Eliel Saarinen (1873–1950), who won the architectural competition for the new railway station in Helsinki in 1904, is one of Finland’s most renowned architects internationally. After fifteen years of construction, the station was inaugurated on 5 May 1919. Philipsz wanted to place her work in the station’s majestic main hall and have her voice cascade along the high vaulted ceiling from its one end to the other. * Aleksis Kivi’s The Seven Brothers is considered one Aleksis Kivi (1843–1872) in turn is Finland’s national of the greatest works of Finnish literature, a pioneer writer who is often referred to as the father of Finnof realistic description of peasantry. Sibelius’s Song of My Heart was composed for a male choir. This is why the observation made by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev in this book on how Susan’s solitary voice expresses in this work, similarly to her Internationale (1999–2000), a longing for a choir, i.e. the missing crowd, is poignant. But on the other hand, fragile female voice singing Song of My Heart alone and a cappella is subverting the traditional form of of performing. Christov-Bakargiev continues that the true political nature of Philipsz’ art lays in the celebration and repetition of nonreproductive activity, which breaks the grip of tradition on us.

Finnish sound artist and researcher Heidi Fast realized a participatory work titled Night Song Walk at the IHME Days 2010. It invited people of the city to join on a walk during which it was possible to produce vocal sounds together, sound that is non-verbal and song-like but not bound to a particular melody.

In her lecture, Fast reflects on sound in public space, its problems and potentials. Artworks and events realized in public spaces involve an ethical side concerning the information that constantly besieges all our senses. Fast asks what art can do or give anymore under these conditions because everything is potentially too much, especially sound with its intrinsic qualities of expanding and invading? In her opinion, art can create situations, space for creative and emotional physicality and mind. Art can increase the experience of compassion and the more subtle forms of communication for being together, small, slow and silent actions.

I’ve often been asked why we produce only one work each year. Why not more? Profusion is often associated with the very nature of a festival, the idea of producing a full supply of content for different audiences with the principle of “something for everyone”. We feel that it is important to be able to offer the audience once a year one IHME Project in a public space, specifically, and to thus allow the possibility of concentrating on that one work, both in terms of production and reception. The work that is born within the IHME framework usually is new, it hasn’t been seen or experienced before; we also wish to give the artists the opportunity to create something new. The IHME Project realized in a public space is also the starting point for planning the rest of the festival program, which means that the contextual premise of the whole event is in the work itself, even if the program also deals with other timely topics. The aim of the IHME Contemporary Art Festival is to make contemporary art more accessible and prompt discussion on what has been experienced together. It is also important to invest in quality instead of quantity. In the consumer society we live in, experiencing art has become more and more a commodity, a product among all the others, and the foundation’s decision to focus on one work alone can therefore also be seen as an ethical statement.

Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev (CCB): Aivan aluksi haluan kiittää Taidesäätiö Pro Arten Tuula Arkiota ja Paula Toppilaa saamastani kutsusta, on ilo olla täällä. Mutta samalla avautuu mahdollisuus kiinnittyä ruumiillisesti paikkaan ja sen tuoksuihin, arjen läsnä olevaan todellisuuteen ja puuvillan poimimiseen pelloilla. Eikö tästä ole tavallaan sinullakin kysymys?

SP: Kun tein BA-tutkintoani, erikoistuin kuvanveistoon ja tosiaan opettelin vuolemista ja hitsaamista ja kaikkea, mitä kuvanveistoon kuuluu. Mutta sitten aloin miettiä ääntä veistoksellisena elementtinä, äänen tuottamisen fyysisyyttä, sitä mitä tapahtuu, kun ääni suunnataan tilaan, ja äänen arkkitehtonisia kytkentöjä. Lapsena halusin aina laulaa, olin mukana bändeissä ja niin edelleen.

Tulin hyvin tietoiseksi kehon sisäisestä rakenteesta, laulamisesta veistoksellisena kokemuksena, ja aloin siirtyä kuvanveistosta ääneen. Se tuntui luontevalta kehitykseltä, ja teoksiani on sitten alettu pitääkin ääniveistoksina. Mutta pidän silti itseäni kuvataiteilijana.

CCB: Totta kai, se on mielekästä. Ennen kuin puhumme täällä olevasta teoksesta, joka mielestäni on loistava monesta syystä, haluaisin puhua teoksesta, jota tuskin kukaan muistaa, sanotaan sitä nyt vaikka Susan Philipszin esihistoriaksi.

Se on nimeltään Striptease. Striptease kertoo meille siirtymisestä kuvanveistosta äänen käyttöön veistoksellisena ilmaisuvälineenä. Lisäksi se kertoo ihmisäänestä veistoksellisena ilmaisuvälineenä, ruumiillisuuden ja ruumiittomuuden suhteesta, läsnäolon ja poissaolon suhteesta, toiston ja toistetun äänen kadottamisen suhteesta. CCB: Mutta missä Striptease tehtiin?

SP: Eräällä Manchesterin sivukadulla. Todella rapistuneessa osassa Manchesteria. Siellä oli edelleen jotain punaisten lyhtyjen toimintaa, mutta myös taiteellista toimintaa oli jo alkanut syntyä. Stripteasessa odotellaan esitystä, joka ei oikeastaan koskaan tapahdu. Tuijotus alkaa kääntyä itseensä, ja toiminnan alkamista odotellessa kiusaantuneisuus lisääntyy.

CCB: Kehon ilmaantumista odotellessa? Kyseessä on siis tavallaan vanhan työn muunnelma ja Striptease valmistui juuri ennen Kansainvälistä. Olihan Kansainvälinen vuonna 2000?

SP: Kyllä, 1999 ­– 2000.

CCB: Niille tiedoksi, jotka eivät tunne tätä Susanin teosta: ensimmäinen äänitetty teos, jossa on Susanin ääni, mutta ei hänen kehoaan, ja joka toistettiin esitystilan kaiuttimen kautta, on hänen a cappella laulamansa Kansainvälinen.

Se on Pariisin kommuunin aikoihin kirjoitettu laulu, joka sittemmin kytkeytyi kommunismin ja työväenliikkeen historiaan. Ehkä voisit näyttää, missä esitit sen? Tuntuu merkilliseltä liittää PowerPoint-esitykseen kuvia, kun taiteilija sijoittaa vain äänensä eri paikkoihin, mutta on joka tapauksessa kiinnostavaa nähdä kuvia paikoista, joissa ääni oli.

SP: Totta. Alun perin se oli suunniteltu Manifesta 3:een Ljubljanaan, nykyisin Sloveniaan. Se oli tässä alikulkutunnelissa Ljubljanassa, nykyisessä Sloveniassa. Äänitin itseäni laulamassa Kansainvälistä a cappella tavalla, joka tekee siitä monitulkintaisen. Sen voi tulkita surulauluksi jonkin menneen muistoksi tai, kuten teos muistuttaa, suoraksi kutsuksi poliittiseen toimintaan. Minulle laulu tuo mieleen tuhansien mielenosoitusten väkijoukot. Mutta kun Kansainvälisen laulaa yksiäänisesti, siitä voi tulla jotain ihan muuta.

CCB: Kyllä, useamman äänen ja yksittäisen äänen välillä on tiettyä kaksijakoisuutta, siis alkuperäisen äänen ja nyt kuulemamme välillä. Haluatko sanoa, että tämä on menneisyyttä eikä yhteisöllisillä toiveilla, vaikuttimilla ja unelmilla ole enää mahdollisuuksia? Vai haluatko sanoa, että tämä piilee kollektiivisessa alitajunnassa ja ilmenee historian kuluessa aika ajoin uudestaan? Luuletko, että voisit soittaa tämän laulun? Olen esittänyt versiosi Kansainvälisestä luultavasti kaksi kertaa. Kerran valkoisessa kuutiomaisessa tilassa Castello di Rivolin Moderns-näyttelyssä ja toisen kerran Sydneyn biennaalissa vanhan sotalaivatehtaan turbiinihallissa, paikassa, jossa Australian kaikki sotalaivat oli rakennettu tehtaan sulkemiseen 1980-luvun alkuun saakka. Se on raadannan paikka, työläisten paikka eikä siellä ole enää työläisiä, ja ristiriita on siinä, että työläisiä ei ole, koska he eivät ole rakentamassa sotalaivoja, mikä on upea asia.

SP: Siellä oli myös katkera ammattiyhdistysselkkaus, he taistelivat tosissaan saadakseen pitää työpaikkansa. Tuon paikan ja satojen työnsä menettäneiden ihmisten tarina on surullinen. Mutta he kamppailivat saadakseen pitää työpaikkansa, joten ajattelin, että paikka oli teokselle varsin sopiva.

CCB: Laulu siis toistui siellä kymmenen minuutin välein. Taltioinnin esitysvälit ja laulun toistumisajat ovat seikkoja, joihin Susan paneutuu erittäin huolellisesti.

Ne liittyvät ympäristöön ja keskittymiskykyyn sekä kappaleen ilmaantumiseen ja ilmaantumisen havaitsemiseen. Äänitepätkä se ei voi olla, sillä sen pitää purkautua tilaan. Pari kolme asiaa on syytä mainita. Yllättävästi Susan näin palauttaa mieliin poissaolevan joukon, joukon läsnäolon poissaolevana. Tilassa, joka meitä ympäröi, on eräänlaista joukkojen poissaolon työstämistä, mutta samanaikaisesti toiston välittämää joukkojen muistamista ja läsnäoloa. Se tapahtuu kiinnostavaa kyllä nytkin, vaikka usein tätä joukon mieliin muistuttamista ei teoksissasi tapahdu.

Jos seisoo aivan tietyissä paikoissa juna-aseman päähallissa, kuulee Susanin äänen laulavan kehtolaulua, josta puhumme hetken kuluttua. Tämä kehtolaulu liitetään tavallisesti siihen versioon, jonka Sibelius on säveltänyt. Se on romaaniin sisältyvä runo, mutta kun tämän laulun kuulee äänitteenä niin se on yleensä kuoron esittämä, kirkkokuoron tapaan. Kun kuuntelee tätä yksinäistä ääntä, panee merkille sen ja kuoron välisen suhteen, jotenkin se pelkistyy yhdeksi yksittäiseksi ääneksi. En usko, että on juuri muita teoksia, jotka tekisivät saman.

On teoksia, joissa subjekti on jakautunut, kuten duetoissa, ja sitten on teoksia, joissa on kaikua, mutta tässä on harvinainen elementti, joka liittyy yksilöön ja kollektiiviin, joukkoon ja joukon poissaoloon. Voisitko nyt kuvailla teosta?

SP: Joten siirrytään siis loppuun.

CCB: Kyllä, siirrytään sinne. Menemme siis alusta loppuun ja takaisin keskelle, koska – kuten tiedämme – aika ei ole lineaarinen. Se on ”risomaattinen”. Se ei ole edes pelkästään risomaattinen; minusta sekin on patriarkaalinen, hiukan lattea tapa suhtautua asioihin. Tämäkin meidän täytyy miettiä uusiksi.

SP: No niin, rautatieaseman päähallissa oleva teos on siis nimeltään Kun päivä laskee. Itse asiassa se on saanut nimensä Aleksis Kiven Seitsemästä veljeksestä. Se on lainaus Eeron vaimolta, joka puhuu lapselleen ja sitten laulaa hänelle kehtolaulun Sydämeni laulu. Jean Sibelius sävelsi runon ja teki sen sävelmänä tunnetuksi. Selitän nyt hiukan sitä, miten päädyin tähän kehtolauluun. Se alkoi Suomenlinnan holvikäytävästä, jonka erikoisesta akustiikasta olin kuullut.

Retki sinne oli hieno ja päivä upea. Leikimme äänellä siinä käytävässä, jossa on holvin ansiosta eräänlainen kuiskausgalleriaefekti, joka oli minusta kiinnostava.

Kiertelimme Helsinkiä, Tuula, Paula ja minä, ja he veivät minut juna-asemalle

ja siellä olevaan ihanaan kahvilaan. Siellä voi nähdä Eero Järnefeltin maalauksen (ks. s. 10); hän oli Sibeliuksen ystävä, ja maalauksen kaltaiseen maisemaan Sibelius ilmeisesti usein lähti etsimään inspiraatiota. Toinen asia, jonka panin merkille Suomesta, oli Tuonelan kehtolaulujen traditio. Nämä tuutulaulut, joita äidit lauloivat lapsilleen, ilmentävät tietynlaista positiivista kuoleman kaipuuta.

CCB: Tuota sinun on tarkennettava – positiivista kuoleman kaipuuta?

SP: Tuonelan kehtolauluissa lähestulkoon toivotaan lapsen kuolemaa, sellainen oli aika. Kun tutkin ilmiön syitä, aloin ymmärtää sitä paremmin.

CCB: Kertoisitko meille?

SP: Tuohon aikaan kuolleisuus oli korkealla, paljon korkeammalla kuin nykyään (erityisesti lasten osalta) ja äidille oli tietysti lohdullista tottua ajatukseen lapsen mahdollisesta kuolemasta. Jos lapsi kuolisi, hän siirtyisi vain toiseen paikkaan, Tuonelaan, joka oli jopa tätä maailmaa parempi paikka, sehän olisi kuin kotiinpaluu. Elämällä ja kuolemalla oli vahva yhteys, tuntui kuin kuolema ei olisi ollut kovin paha asia. Sen ajateltiin olevan paluu kotiin, Tuonelaan. Lapselle vakuuteltiin, että älä ole huolissasi, vaikka et unesta heräisikään, pääset parempaan paikkaan, pois tästä julmasta maailmasta. Mutta on myös toisia, synkempiä ja uhkaavampia lauluja. Termi positiivisen kuolemantoiveen kehtolaulu johtuu siitä, että nämä laulut eivät yleensä ole pahantahtoisia eikä varsinkaan tämä laulu, jonka Sibelius on säveltänyt Kiven Seitsemän veljeksen kauniisiin sanoihin. Siinä Tuonelaa kuvataan paikkana, jonne lapsi kenties haluaisikin mennä.* (Ottaa kirjan esille.) Sain tämän eilen antikvariaatista, se *Lisää aiheesta teoksesta on Alex Matsonin englanniksi kääntämä, ja aivan lopussa on Tarasti, Eero (toim,): Snow, Forest, Silence. The Finnish kohtaus, jossa Eeron vaimo sanoo: ”Sanoppas, lapseni, mun Tradition of Semiotics. Indiana University Press, 1999. suven-ihanaiseni, sano: etkö tahtoisi täältä purjehtia rauhan ikisatamaan pois, koska vielä puhtaana väikkyy lapsuutesi valkea viiri? Rannalla sumean, tyynen järven seisoo Tuonelan kartano tumma, siellä himmeän lehdistön helmassa, kasteisen viidan kohdussa on lapselle valmiina kehto ja valkeat liinat ja vaipat. Sen tähden kuule mun lauluni; se johtaa sun Tuonelan ruhtinaan maahan. Oi kuule mun sydämeni laulu!” Sydämeni laulu on siis tämä Sibeliuksen säveltämä kehtolaulu.

CCB: Saammeko kuulla sen? Sen jälkeen siirrymme kiinnostavaan aiheeseen, äänen arkkitehtuuriin. Romaania en kylläkään ole lukenut. Ja varmasti olisi ennen tänne tuloa pitänyt, koska romaani on nähdäkseni jonkinlainen kansallinen kalleus. Tiedän, että romaani kertoo seitsemästä veljeksestä, jotka eivät halua oppia lukemaan ja kirjoittamaan, vaan jättävät mieluummin talonsa ja lähtevät erämaahan. Mutta elämä erämaassa on niin kovaa, että he palaavat takaisin sivistyksen pariin ja oppivat lukemaan, mikä on helpompaa. Loppukohtauksessa nuorin veljeksistä palaa kotiin ja hänen kotiintulonsa keskeyttää tämän kuolemaa kaipaavan kehtolaulun. Nainen miestään odottamassa –­ kirja on tietenkin miehen kirjoittama – olisi hyvin mielenkiintoista selvittää, minkä merkityksen se saisi, jos teosta lukisi feministisestä näkökulmasta, niin kuin varmasti jotkut ovat tehneet. Voisitko joka tapauksessa soittaa sen?

SP: Toki voin soittaa. Tämä on aseman päähalli ja voin kuvailla teille…

CCB: Kuinka ääni kulkee? Se on minusta todella vaikuttavaa. Minulla oli tänään hyvin kiinnostava kokemus, päähallia kierrellessä teos voi nimittäin helposti jäädä osumatta kohdalle. Yksi sen parhaita piirteitä minun mielestäni on se, mikä olisi voinut tuntua sen pahimmalta virheeltä, että se vaikuttaa lähes tiedostamattomasti suurimmassa osassa päähallia. Aloin muistella keskustelua, jonka kerran kävin Max Neuhausin kanssa. Minä kyselin häneltä. Ja Max on tunnetusti sellainen, jolta saa jonkinlaista…

SP: Inspiraatiota.

CCB: Niin, inspiraatiota. Max Neuhaushan on ihminen, joka muistetaan länsimaisen taiteen historiassa henkilönä, joka aloitti äänitaiteen, ääniveistokset – mutta ei omalla äänellään. Joka tapauksessa Max teki jotain aivan ainutlaatuista. Kun juttelimme hänen töistään kerran, minä kysyin: ”Millainen se Times Squaren teos oikein oli? Miten se toimi?” Ja hän sanoi: ”Jaa, se oli Times Squarella ilmastointiristikon alla, sieltä ääni kyllä kuului. Minulle taideteos on onnistunut, kun henkilö, joka sen kokee, ei edes tiedä, että siinä on taideteos. Äkätään vain jotain kaunista ja sanotaan: ”Vau, tuo kuulostaa ihan taideteokselta.” Tai: ”Tämä maisema voisi olla maalaus”, ja sitten se onkin todellisuudessa taideteos. Jos siis pääsee tälle asteelle – hän aina sanoi – teos on onnistunut. Minusta se, miten ääni toimii hyvin erityisellä tavalla tällä täpötäydellä ja hälyisellä rautatieasemalla muistuttaa suuresti Times Squaren tilannetta. Jos nimittäin sattuu menemään oikeaan paikkaan Times Squarellä ja kuulee metelin, jonka arvioi esteettiseksi ja toteaa: ”Voi noita hulluja taiteilijoita, he tekevät asioita, joita kuka tahansa osaisi tehdä, ja huomaatkos, tämä voisi peräti ollakin taideteos.” Aivan kuin ajatuskuvio siitä, mitä taiteen tekeminen on tässä maailmassa, kiepautettaisiin nurin. Luulen melkein, että tämä

taiteen ja ei-taiteen välitila on nykyisin niin tärkeä, koska elämme ylettömän visuaalisuuden aikaa, melu- ja kuvasaasteen aikaa. Viimeisten sadan vuoden aikana taide on menettänyt valtansa visuaalisiin tuotantojärjestelmiin. Se alkoi suurista elokuvateattereista, sitten muotoilusta ja niin edelleen. Ja nykyään tämä on entistä korostuneempaa, kun ajatellaan vaikkapa eräiden tieteellisissä laboratorioissa käytettävien digitaalisen kuvantamismenetelmien kustannuksia.

Ollaan kovin kaukana siitä, mitä yksittäinen ihminen, jolla on käytössään vähän aikaa, rahaa ja teknisiä voimavaroja voi – joskus harvoin – saada hallintaansa.

Kun kyse on aistihavaintojen pilaantumisesta, eräänlaisesta esteettisestä saastuneisuudesta, tällaiset teokset, jotka pelkistyvät hyvin pieniä asioita arvostavaan välitilaan, ovat tietyllä tavalla estetiikan ekologiaa. Siksi on mielestäni niin onnistunut asia, että teoksen olemassaoloa ei juuri lainkaan havaitse. Tällaisille teoksille on erittäin vaikeaa saada rahoitusta, koska yleensä sponsorit ynnä muut haluavat erittäin laajaa näkyvyyttä. He haluavat ylläpitää kovin valheellista sivistyskäsitystä, joka rinnastuu populismiin, ja sehän on mieletöntä, se ei selvästikään ole sivistystä. Tämä numeroajattelu, se kuinka monet ihmiset oikeasti saavat virikkeitä, akustisia virikkeitä, ei liity mitenkään siihen vapauden tunteeseen, jonka yksittäiset ihmiset teoksen yhteydessä kokevat. Sen vuoksi pidän teoksesta niin paljon. Jos sattuu olemaan oikeassa paikassa, Susanin ääni kuuluu ikään kuin aivan viereltä. Ja äkkiä aave materialisoituu, tämä jonkin toisen henkilön ruumiiton mutta ruumiillinen läsnäolo. Ja siinä on vain taiteilijan ääni niin kuin hän laulaisi ihan vierellä. Miten sait sen aikaan?

SP: Arkkitehtuuri teki minuun suuren vaikutuksen, ja tilan akustiikka oli hyvin kiinnostava ja haastava. Tällaiseen paikkaan on vaikeaa tehdä ääniteosta.

Holvikäytävä kiinnosti minua, holvit tuntuivat olevan toistuva arkkitehtuuriaihe kaikkialla Helsingissä. Samoin kuiskausgalleriaefekti kiinnosti minua, ja pohdiskelin sitten, voisimmeko saada sen aikaan käyttämällä hyväksi päähallin holvia.

Jotta onnistuisimme siinä, meidän oli käytettävä erityisen herkkiä kaiuttimia ja asennettava ne holvikaaren alareunaan, neljä keskushallin toiselle kaarelle. Nämä kovaääniset eivät suuntaa ääntä tilaan (aaltomaisesti), vaan ääni suuntautuu ylöspäin (massan tavoin) siten, että se seurailee kaaren linjausta laskeutuen alas sen vastakkaista puolta. Kuten Carolyn sanoi, ääni tuntuu tulevan tyhjästä. Se tuntuu tulevan sieltä, missä ääni kulkee aivan pään yläpuolella, kaaren vastakkaisen puolen loppupäästä. Näin onnistuimme toteuttamaan intiimin äänitaskun juna-aseman kaaokseen.

CCB: Ja sitä kutsutaan kuiskausgalleriaksi?

SP: Kuiskausgalleriaefektiksi. Tiedäthän, New Yorkin suurella keskusrautatieasemalla on tällainen kuiskausgalleriaefekti, jossa kuiskaus yhdessä nurkassa kuuluu toiseen nurkkaan. Tai vielä parempi esimerkki on Fazerin kahvila täällä Helsingissä.

CCB: Onko sinulla kuvaa tästä kahvilasta?

SP: Ei, ikävä kyllä. Kaikki täällä olevat ovat varmasti käyneet siellä. Kävimme kokeilemassa sitä eilen, ja kun siellä puhuu, toinen voi kuulla puheen huoneen toiselta puolelta ellipsoidin katon ansiosta. Ajattelin, että saman pitäisi teoriassa toimia rautatieasemalla, mutta mittakaava on valtava, enkä ollut lain-

kaan varma, toimisiko se. Se oli siis kokeilu. Ja oli jännittävää huomata, että se tosiaan toimii, kun äänen suuntaa ylös kaarelle, ja sitten se laskeutuu. Teimme teknikoiden kanssa töitä keskiviikkona kello viiteen aamulla, Paula, Eoghan ja minä. Meillä oli nosturi, ja meidän piti asentaa kaiutin aika korkealle saadaksemme efektin aikaan.

CCB: Saadaksenne aikaan efektin teidän täytyi asentaa kaiutin holvikaaren alareunaan, koska kaari alkaa keskeltä tilaa. Normaalissa holvikatossa ei näin tarvitse olla, koska ihmiset puhuvat lattiatasolla hyvän matkaa kaaren alapuolella, jolloin ääni ei voi nousta ylös ja kantautua ympäriinsä. Se edellyttäisi iglumaista tilaa. Täällä se toimii, jos laulaja on holvikaaren alkupään korkeudella.

SP: Näin on.

CCB: Ajattelin näinä loppuminuutteina tuoda esille muutamia asioita, joita en haluaisi jättää huomiotta. Yksi niistä on kysymys aaveista ja kummituksista ja feminismistä, taas kerran. Kyse on äänistä, kun kuulee äänen aivan läheltään, vaikka se lauletaan hallin vastakkaisella puolella, tuntuu aivan kuin sen tuottaisi aave. Lähelläsi tässä tilassa tuntuu olevan aineeton, näkymätön olento.

Mistä pääsemmekin takaisin Striptease-teoksen tanssijaan, joka ei näyttäydy ja joka on näkymättömyydessään kuin aave. Aaveet ovat hyvin merkityksellisiä, kuin osa länsimaisen kulttuurin rinnakkaistarinaa valistusajasta lähtien.

Naiset kirjoittivat ensimmäisinä goottilaisia romaaneja, esimerkkinä vaikka Ann Radcliffen romaanit, kauan ennen Mary Shelleyn 1800-luvun alun Frankensteinia. Tämä toinen linja oli olemassa kauan ennen Edgar Allan Poeta ja jatkui toiseutena rationalismin historian rinnalla. Haluaisin tietää, oletko lukenut näitä goottilaisia romaaneja, ja mitä ajattelet nämä kirjat kirjoittaneista naisista. Mitä ajattelet tästä toisesta aavemaisuudesta, tästä mystisyydestä, nimenomaan mahdollisuutena veistää tilaa sisältä, hajottaa sitä, kuten runoilija Adrianne Rich kirjoitti tilan hajottamisesta? Minusta tämä aavekysymys on nostettava esille, kun nyt kerran olemme täällä, ja aaveet ympäröivät meitä. Palautetaan ne vain mieliin.

SP: Haluaisin sanoa Stripteasesta, että sen innoittajana oli Powellin ja Pressburgerin elokuva Punaiset kengät, jossa tarinan lopussa ballerina kuolee heittäytymällä junan eteen. Häntä odotetaan esiintymään, mutta hän viipyy, eikä tiedetä miksi, ja lopulta tulee tieto hänen kuolemastaan. Esitystä päätetään kuitenkin jatkaa niin, että valokeila suunnataan hänen sijastaan tyhjälle näyttämölle, joten hänen aavemainen läsnäolonsa on siellä. Ihmiset usein sanovat, että teoksissani on tämä haamumainen piirre, vähän teoksesta riippuen. Mutta en oikeastaan tunne mainitsemiasi kirjailijoita, Edgar Allan Poeta edeltäneitä…

CCB: Toinen asia nimittäin on, että näissä goottilaisissa romaaneissa esiintyy aaveita, mutta jää epäselväksi, ovatko ne päähenkilön kuvitelmia vai esitetäänkö ne ”todellisina” aaveina. Joten tämä tila ”todellisen” aaveen ja mahdollisuuden välillä, että se voidaan järkiperäisesti selittää ullakkokamarin naisen uneksi tai hulluksi kuvitelmaksi, on kiinnostava, koska nämä jutut kirjoitettiin Isaac Newtonin aikana ja nimenomaan tilanteessa, jossa atomifysiikasta ei ollut tietoakaan, ja siksi tällaiset asiat vaikuttivat tuohon aikaan melko mielekkäiltä.

Kun seuraa tämän päivän kvanttifysiikkaa, atomin osien tutkimusta, niin ei ole

mahdollista, että kukaan asiasta vähääkään tietävä voisi kinastella siitä, voiko jokin olla samanaikaisesti sekä ikkunan sisäpuolella että sen ulkopuolella. Tätä on mahdotonta kiistää, koska kvanttifysiikka kertoo sen meille. On olemassa multiversumi, useita rinnakkaisia maailmankaikkeuksia, ja siinä mittakaavassa kaikki riippuu fysikaalisten ilmiöiden havainnoinnista. Tuntuu kuin ympyrä olisi sulkeutumassa, ja se mitä näissä romaaneissa sanottiin, on totta kun ajatellaan pienimittakaavaisesti tämän päivän tieteellisin käsittein.

Mutta ajattelin, että voisin päätteeksi lukea viimeiset lauseet tekstistä, jonka joskus kirjoitin – yhden monista jutuista, joita olen taiteestasi kirjoittanut. ”Mutta palataanpa kysymykseen toiston radikaaliudesta. Kyse ei ole pelkästään siitä, että laulut eivät ole hänen omiaan, Philipsz on myös valinnut Malmössä toistettaviksi kolme laulua, jotka ovat miesten kirjoittamia ja esittämiä.

Historiallisesti naiset ovat olleet malliesimerkki ruumiin representaatiosta ja hyväksikäytöstä. Joten vaihtoehdon esittäminen kieltämällä kuva ja tarjoamalla ainoastaan ääni on itse asiassa aika radikaalia. Tästä näkökulmasta on huomionarvoista tarkastella erästä Philipszin varhaisteosta – palaan toistuvasti tähän – ääni- ja valoinstallaatiota Striptease vuodelta 1999, joka sovitettiin aidon tuntuisesti strippiluolan rähjäiseen tunnelmaan: seksikkääseen musiikkiin, lavakimallukseen ja punaiseen heiluvaan spottiin. Tässä tapauksessa tosin esiintyjä ei koskaan saapunut, katsojat jätettiin odottamaan showta, joka ei ikinä alkanut. Yhtä merkillepantavaa on, että yhdessä harvoista projekteista, joihin sisältyy muita aineksia kuin hänen oma äänensä, ääni–elokuva-installaatiossa The Dead vuodelta 2000, Philipsz laulaa vanhaa irlantilaista kansanlaulua The Lass of Aughrim rakastajansa hylkäämästä rutiköyhästä tytöstä. Teokseen sisältyy myös musta 45 mm:n filmiprojektio. Kun musta filmi alkaa tuhoutua, filmipohjaan ilmaantuu valkoisia täpliä. Philipsz käyttää toistona uudelleentulkintaa James Joycen novelliin Kuollut perustuvasta John Hustonin elokuvasta laulaen sankarittareen tuhoisasti vaikuttavaa laulua ja häivyttämällä samanaikaisesti kaiken kuvailmaisun. Koko modernilla aikakaudella naisten yleinen ongelma on ollut, kuinka löytää äänensä maailmassa, jossa naisilla ei perinteisesti ole ollut itsenäistä ääntä, vaan se on ollut luotava tyhjästä. Runoilija ja feministi Adrianne Rich on kirjoittanut usein siitä, kuinka tärkeää on hallitsevan kulttuurin uudelleenlukeminen omasta näkökulmasta, sen tulkitseminen uudelleen.

Kaksi Adriannen runosäettä kuuluvat näin: ”Tämä on sortajan kieltä, silti minun on puhuttava sinulle.” Sen vuoksi toisto ja uudelleentulkinta muuttuvat Richillä kulttuuriseksi strategiaksi. Vuonna 1972 kirjoittamassaan esseessä ”Kun me kuolleet heräämme – kirjoittaminen re-visiona” Rich huomautti: ”Re-visio, tuore näkemys menneestä, vanhan tekstin lähestyminen uudesta, kriittisestä suunnasta on naisille enemmän kuin kappale kulttuurihistoriaa, se on selviytymisen ehto. Emme voi tuntea itseämme ennen kuin käsitämme, millaisia olettamuksia olemme joutuneet nielemään. Ja tämä naisten pyrkimys itsensä tiedostamiseen on enemmän kuin identiteetin hakua. Se on yksi tapa kieltäytyä miesten hallitseman yhteiskunnan itsetuhoisuudesta. Meidän on tarpeen tuntea menneisyyden kirjoitukset ja tuntea ne toisin kuin koskaan ennen. Ei perinteiden jatkamiseksi, vaan irrottaaksemme niiden otteen meistä.”

Taas tuo kytkös toisaalta toiston ja toisaalta menetyksen ja eron välillä, jotka ovat molemmat välttämättömiä Richin kirjoitusten ja runojen subjektiivisuudelle. Lainaan runoa: ”Tahdoin nähdä tämän ennen kuin lähden, kokemuksen toistosta kuolemana, kritiikin epäonnistumisen, paikantaakseni kivun, bussin julisteen, lavasteet, verenvuotoni on hallinnassa.” Ehkä hän viittaa julisteeseen, jossa puhutaan hakattujen naisten suojelusta: ”Voitte soittaa tähän numeroon ja saada apua.” Philipszin paljas ääni, joka ei voi piiloutua säestyksen taakse, keskeytyy. Hän yrittää toistaa eikä ilmeisesti pysty tekemään sitä tarkasti. Ja tuossa mahdottomuudessa on kauneutta, mahdottomuudessa tavoittaa – kirjoitin täydellisyyttä, hänen äänensä on niin kaukana täydellisyydestä, että arvelen siinä olevan tahallista rimanalitusta. Mutta äänesi säröisessä hauraudessa on epäilemättä jotain erityistä. – Vuonna 2001 hän toisti ja lauloi koko David Bowien CD-albumin Ziggy Stardust. Laulun toisensa jälkeen vihoviimeiseen, Ziggyn tuhoa merkitsevään rock’n’roll-itsemurhaan saakka. Alun perin hän suunnitteli käyttävänsä CD:tä Glasgown installaatiossa, mutta se julkaistiin sitten Pork Salad Pressin tuottamana 2004, ja itse kullakin kotikuuntelijalla on valta arvioida, kuinka yritys on onnistunut tai epäonnistunut. Silti tässä piilee Philipszin taiteen todellinen poliittinen luonne, ei-tuotannollisen toiminnan ylistys, toistot tai teot nimikirjoituksia, mainetta, originaalisuutta ja auktoriteetteja vastaan. Perinteiden toisto murtaa niiden otteen meistä. Ja tämäkin on tehtävä varoen, ilman autoritaarisuutta, ottaen huomioon kivun. Philipszin sävelkorkeus ei ole täydellinen, hänen äänensä kuulostaa hauraalta aivan kuin se voisi särkyä milloin tahansa. Siitä tulee mieleen yksin laulaminen, kun on peloissaan tyhjässä talossa. Conversation on IHME Project 2010: When Day Closes

Susan Philipsz, the artist behind the IHME Project 2010 When Day Closes, and curator and artistic director of Documenta XIII Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev discussed Philipsz’ sound piece which was exhibited in Helsinki. The conversation took place in March 2010 at the auditorium of the Helsinki Central Railway Station as part of the IHME Days program and it is available on YouTube at: www.youtube.com/ihmeproductions This text is an edited version of the discussion.

Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev (CCB): First of all, I would like to thank Tuula Arkio and Paula Toppila from Pro Arte Foundation Finland for inviting me, it’s a pleasure to be here. And I would like to thank Susan for obviously having mentioned that she would like me to come and to have this conversation. I haven’t prepared a lecture because Susan is here, so therefore it is more in the form of call * One of the major breakthroughs of Philipsz’ career and response. We can do a little song almost, together. was the Sculpture Projects Münster ´07 in Germany.

The focus of this event in Münster, organized A duet. Because, sometimes Susan sings with herself or once every decade, is art in public space. Philipsz sings to another self. And this doubling-up of her voice designed a work called The Lost Reflection in has occurred both in the Münster piece The Lost Reflecti- Münster. Located under a bridge, this work is based on Jacques Offenbach´s composition The Tales of on* (2007) and in Sunset Song** in Art Base Texas. There Hoffmann, which has its origins in the writings of the German author E.T.A. Hoffmann. It tells the stowas again an echo or reflection of a building of the voice ry of the evil courtesan Giulietta, whose seductive coming from the speaker on the roof, and in other pieces powers enabled her to steal Hoffman´s reflection.

The story sung by Philipsz travels across the water as well. And in many of the works there is something of as a duet. The artwork became so popular with the duet. This relationship of a one voice to another is the local public that the city of Münster decided to purchase the piece and make it a permanent also a relationship between her voice and the missing addition to the city´s collection of public art. There voice of someone who was singing the song before. And are some recordings of the work on YouTube. **In Sunset Song Philipsz sings both the male and therefore the question of the echo and the repetition is female parts of the 19th-century American folk very much within the work and within the shape of her ballad “Banks of the Ohio.” Philipsz vocalizes the gendered lyrics in a call-and-response arrangement, work, which is actually a sculpture. So, the main point to with the volume level changing according to the start with is that you are not a sound artist, it is wrong to shifting daylight. Susan Philipsz (SP): It’s true to say that my primary tool is sound but I don’t consider myself a sound artist. I have a degree in fine art, I have also MA in fine art and I exhibit in fine art context, normally. I also work in public space. In the beginning I used to be invited to sound art festivals and I really felt that I stood out as a sore thumb in that context. I didn’t feel comfortable and I think it is a very different kind of approach to the way I work. * Lawrence Weiner (b. 1942) is an

CCB: Yes, I think that the main point is that it is a sculpture, in a American conceptual artist who is way that Lawrence Weiner’s* work is sculpture. Your work here in Helsinki is really about sculpting the space within which it is located. It is sculptured space which is also particularly about the relationships 50

that the person who experiences the work has with that space and the altering and the shaping of that space. And it is also mainly a work about embodiment and disembodiment. The paradox of embodiment and disembodiment actually occurs only if they are mutually engendered. So the more you sing a-cappella, the more it is taking you into some dreamland, somewhere very far from the here and now, very far from the labors of the field. I´m making a reference to singing in the fields during slavery in the south. It is about taking you away from that, some sort of emancipation through the imaginery. But in the same time you are able to ground your body to the place and to the smells, in the here and now of the daily life and toils in the field of picking the cotton. Is that not in a way the question for you?

SP: Well, when I did my BA I specialized in sculpture and I did actually study with carving and welding and all the things you do in sculpture. But then I started to think about sound in a sculptural sense, the physicalities of producing sound, what happens when you project the sound into the space and the architectural concerns of the sound. I always liked to sing as a kid and I was in bands and things. So, I really became aware of the inner body space and how that was actually quite a sculptural experience to sing and so I started to go from sculpture to sound and that seemed like the natural progression to do that and my work has been known as sound sculpture. But I consider myself an artist.

CCB: Yeah, that’s the wise thing to do. Before we talk about that piece that is here that I think is marvelous for a number reasons, I want to talk about the piece that nobody really remembers, let’s call it the prehistory of Susan Philipsz.

It is called Striptease. Striptease tells us about this passage from the sculptural to the use of sound as a sculptural medium. It also tells us about the use of the voice as a sculptural medium and the relationship between embodiment and disembodiment, presence and absence, repetition and the loss of the voice that has been repeated. I want to speak about this piece because those issues are played out also in terms of the history of some feminist questions. And Striptease is basically a piece that you can maybe please evoke as here, where there is no voice and one waits for the voice and the voice never really comes. There is no body and one waits for the body and the body never really comes. All there is the stage with the lights and the music of striptease that never occurs.

Is that it?

SP: That´s it. I couldn´t put it any better than that.

CCB: But where was it located?

SP: In a side street in Manchester, in a really run-down part of Manchester. There was still some red light district activity going on there, but it was becoming artyfied. In Striptease you are anticipating this performance that never actually happens. So the gaze begins to turn in on itself and becomes self-conscious of this waiting for the action to happen.

CCB: For this body to appear? So that is in a sense a kind of transition old piece and it is just before the Internationale. Because Internationale was in 2000?

SP: Yes, 1999–2000.

CCB: For those who don’t know the work of Susan, the first piece that is a recorded piece with her voice, without her body, played back in a location through a speaker, is her singing a cappella the Internationale which is the song which was written in the time of the Commune in Paris and then became the song which is identified with the history with communism and the workers’ movement. Maybe you want to show where you showed it? It’s very strange to do a PowerPoint of pictures for an artist who puts her voice in places, but nevertheless it’s interesting to see the locations in the pictures where the voice was.

SP: That’s true. Originally it was conceived for Manifesta 3 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. It was in this underpass. And what I have done, I recorded myself singing Internationale a cappella in a way that it is ambiguous. It could be interpreted as a lament to something past or, as the work suggests, like a clarion call to political action. And for me, that song evokes throngs of thousands of demonstrations. But I think when you sing it with only one single voice, it can become something else.

CCB: Yes, there is a kind of ambivalence positioned between many voices and the solitary voice we are hearing now. Are you saying this is past and there is no more possibility of communal desires and impulses and dreams? Or do you suggest this is somewhere in the collective subconscious, and it reemerges periodically in history? Do you think you might play this song? I have showed Internationale with you twice, I think. Once in Castello di Rivoli in the exhibition called Moderns in the white cube space and once in the Biennale of Sydney in a turbine hall of the old factory which was made for military ship building and in which all of the military ships of the Australians were built until it was closed in the early eighties. It’s a place of labor, it’s a place of workers. But there are no workers nowadays and it is because they are not making military ships anymore, which is fantastic in a way.

SP: There was also this bitter union dispute. They really fought to keep their jobs and it’s quite sad, the history of that space, and hundreds of people lost their jobs. But they struggled to keep their jobs, so I thought it was quite an appropriate place for it.

CCB: So the song appeared every ten minutes there. The question of the interval between the loop, the song, when it appears is something that Susan very carefully thinks about. And it depends on each context and on the attention span.

And it has to do with the discovery of the appearance of the piece. It can not be a loop, it must erupt into the space. There are two or three things that need to be mentioned. One is the fact that songs are subversive. In other words, often when political content cannot be transmitted in any official way or there is censorship, it has been through the songs, and the continuity of popular songs within often even folk songs that certain trajectories, the trajectories in these emancipatory impulses, let’s say, these impulses to connect people, go through the centuries through songs. This space of the song is a place of the political action. The other question of the collective and the singular important in this piece is: ”Why does one suffer?” One suffers certain kind of pain, lyrical pain because one is thinking this song is the song that is sung by many people. It’s very rare if you hear a recording of the Internationale with only one person singing. It’s like contradictory with the reason for the song and with the ways that the song was sung. Suddenly, what Susan is evoking this way is the absent

crowd, the crowd is present as an absence. So there is a kind of an elaboration of the loss of the crowd but the same time the evocation and the presence of the crowd in this space which you are in, through some form of repetition.

And that interestingly enough occurs again, it doesn’t occur very often in your works, this evocation of the crowd. But it does occur in this piece here, the new piece for the station. If you stand in certain locations in the main railway hall you will hear Susan’s voice singing a lullaby, a children’s lullaby that we’ll talk about in a minute. But this lullaby is usually associated with the version of it that Sibelius – for example – has set to music. It was a poem from the novel, but when one hears this song recorded again it is usually choir singing, like a religious chorus. So again listening to this solitary voice there is a relationship between that and the chorus, somehow it is collapsing onto one single voice.

I don’t think there are many other works that do that. There are works where the subject is split like on the duets and then there are works that are about reflection, but this is a rare element that has to do with singular and collective, the crowd and the not crowd. Can you describe the piece here?

SP: So we have to skip to the end.

CCB: Yes, skip to the end. So we go from the beginning to the end and then back to the middle because time is not linear as we all know. It is rhizomatic. It is not even only rhizomatic, I think that’s a patriarchal way of looking of things that’s a bit flat. We have to rethink that too.

SP: Okay, When Day Closes is the title of the work in the main hall of the Railway station*. Actually it takes its title from Aleksis Kivi’s** Seven Brothers, and it is a quote from Eero’s wife that is talking to her child, and she sings the lullaby Song of my Heart. Jean Sibelius*** put that into music and made it famous as a tune. I’ll tell you a bit about how I came to this lullaby. It started in * The Central Railway Station was designed by Suomenlinna Island in this passageway which has stranFinnish architect Eliel Saarinen (1873–1950) in ge acoustics I had heard about. It was a fantastic journey 1909 and the station was opened in 1919. (www. visithelsinki.fi) and a wonderful day and we played in this passageway ** Finland’s national writer Aleksis Kivi (1834–1872) with these acoustics which the archway causes, a kind of wrote the first important Finnish-language novel The Seven Brothers as well as plays and lyrical whispering gallery effect. I thought that was interesting. poetry at a time when Finnish was not used as a We looked around in Helsinki, Tuula and Paula and I, and language of literature. The rare examples of literature published in Finland before Kivi had been in they brought me to the train station and we went to the Swedish. His major work The Seven Brothers created wonderful cafe there. And you can see this painting by a literary Finnish that was remarkably original: it was based on dialects, proverbs, religious texts, Eero Järnefelt (cf. photo p. 10), who was a friend of Sibethe Swedish language and world literature. SP: These are the lullabies almost wishing the child dead, because of the time.

I researched into why and I could understand more.

CCB: Can you tell us?

SP: Back at that time there was a high mortality rate, much higher than there is now, [especially of the children]. And it was comforting to the mother to get used to that idea of the child´s potential death. If the child did die, they would go to the other place of Tuonela which was even better than this world, it was like going home. And there was a strong connection between life and death and it was like death wasn’t really such a bad thing. It was considered to be going home, to Tuonela. So it was to assure the child, do not worry, if you do not wake from your sleep you are going to a better place away from the harshness of this world. But there are other more sinister ones, more threatening ones. But that’s why they are called positive death wish lullabies, because they are not malicious mostly and especially this one I came across that Sibelius puts to music from Aleksis Kivi’s Seven Brother’s which has very beautiful words.

The song describes this place Tuonela, that wouldn´t you rather go there.* (Picks up a book.) I got this from the antique shop yesterday, *Read more about the subject: Tarasti, Eero (ed.) Snow, Forest, Alex Matson´s translation to English and right in the end Silence. The Finnish Tradition there is a part where Eero’s wife says: “Tell me, my child, of Semiotics. Indiana University my summer-bright, tell me: wouldst thou not sail away from Press, 1999 here to a haven of everlasting peace, while the white pennant of childhood still flies clean? On the shore of a misty, tideless lake stands that dark manor of Tuoni; there in the heart of a shadowy grove, in the bosom of a dewy thicket a cradle is prepared for thee with snowy linen and wrappings. Hear therefore my song: it wafts thee to the land of the Prince of Tuoni. O hear the song of my heart!” So, the Song of my heart is this lullaby that Sibelius put to music.

CCB: Can we hear it? And then we’ll get to the architecture of the sound which is interesting. But the novel, I haven’t read the novel. And I’m sure I should have to before I come here because I think it’s like a national heirloom. But I think the novel is about the seven brothers who don’t want to learn how to write and read so they preferred to leave the farm and go to the wilderness but the life in the wilderness is so harsh that they come back to the civilization and learn how to read . And this is the last scene where the youngest brother comes home and his coming home interrupts the death wish lullaby. The woman waiting for the man –of course this is written by a man – it is very interesting what it all might mean if one were to do a kind of feminist reading of the novel, which I’m sure people have done. Anyway, could you play it?

SP: Oh yes, I can play it. This is the main hall of the station and then I’m gonna just describe to you...

CCB: The way that the sound moves? Oh that’s very fascinating I think. Today I had a very interesting experience because one walks around the main hall of the railway station and can easily not encounter this artwork. So I think one of the main qualities of it for me is what might have appeared the main fault of the work –is that it is almost subliminal in most of the areas of the main hall. And I remember a conversation I had once with Max Neuhaus. And I was asking him. And Max is someone that you recognize as some sort of...

SP: Inspiration.

CCB: Inspiration. So Max Neuhaus is someone who has gone down into the history of the western canon as the person who starts sound art, sound sculpture – but not with his voice. But nevertheless Max, he did something very extraordinary. When we spoke about his work once, I said: ”How was

that piece in Times Square? How did it work?” And he said: ”Oh, it was in the grid of the Times Square and you would hear the sound and for me an artwork is successful when the person who experiences doesn’t even know that there is an artwork. They just discover something beautiful and they say: ’Oh wow, it sounds like an artwork’ or ‘This landscape could be a painting’ and then it actually is an artwork.” So if you can achieve that state –he would say – it’s a successful artwork. I think this particular way that the sound works in this very crowded and noisy railway station is very close to that moment of the Times Square. If you by chance go to the right place in Times Square and you hear this noise coming out which you define as aesthetic and you say: ”Oh, those crazy artists, they do things that anybody could do and, look, this could even be an artwork.” So that’s a kind of reversal of the paradigm what it is to make art in the world. I think this almost standing on the liminal area between art and

non-art is so crucial today because it is a period of over-visuality, of pollution of noise, of pollutions of images. Over the last one hundred years the art has lost the power over the production systems of visuality. It began with the large cinema, and then design and so forth. And now more than ever, I mean if you compare it to the costs of some forms of digital imaging used in science labs and so on. It is so far from what a singular individual can actually sometimes control with very little money and very little time and very little technology.

In that kind of aesthetic pollution, these kind of works, which pair down to a liminal state where you can appreciate very little things, are a form of ecology of the aesthetics which is really important. That’s why I think it’s so successful that you don’t almost notice that it is there. It means that it is really hard to get funding to such things because in general sponsors want big visibility, want to have the very false idea of education... It becomes identified with populism and that’s absurd, that’s not education, obviously, this idea of numbers, how many people actually get the stimulus, the acoustic stimulus. It has nothing to do with the emancipation that occurs in the singular individual when they experience the artwork. That’s why I really love it. If you happen to be in the right position in this space, you hear her voice like it’s right next to you. And suddenly this ghost materializes, this disembodied but embodied presence of the some other person. And it is just Susan’s voice as if she is singing right next to you. How did you achieve that?

SP: I was very impressed with the architecture and the acoustics of the hall was very interesting and challenging. To make a sound work in such a place is difficult. I was interested in this archway, it seemed to be a recurring architectural motive throughout Helsinki, these archways. So I was interested in that and the whispering gallery effect and I was just wondering if we could create it using the archway of the main hall. In order to do that, we had to use these special hypersensitive speakers and install them in the curve of the archway, four along the curve of the highway. These loudspeakers, rather than project sound into the space [as waves], project the sound upwards [ as a mass] so the sound follows the line of the curve and follows the opposite side from the curve. As Carolyn said the sound seems to come out of nowhere. It seems to come where the sound follows just above your head, the end of the curve on the opposite side. So, that’s how we achieved this kind of intimate pocket of sound in the chaos of the train station.

CCB: And it is called whispering gallery?

SP: Whispering gallery effect. You know in Grand Central Station in New York they have this kind of whispering gallery effect where you can whisper in one corner and you hear it in another one. Or an even better example is Fazer’s café here in Helsinki.

CCB: Do you have a picture of this cafe?

SP: No, I’m sorry. I’m sure everyone here must have been there. We went and tried it out yesterday, and that’s where one can speak and another can hear that on the other side of the room because of the ellipsoid ceiling. I thought it should in theory work in the railway station, but it is a huge scale, and I wasn’t really sure if it would work. So it was kind of an experiment to see. And it was quite exciting when we discovered that it really did work when you project the sound up and around and it falls. We worked till five in the morning on Wednes-

day, Paula, Eoghan and I, with the technicians. We had a crane and we had to install the loudspeaker really high up to get this effect.

CCB: You have to install it at the base of the curve because the grand central/ ground center of the curve goes almost all the way down. But in the normal cupola you don’t, because people speak way below the curve on the floor level.

So it cannot go above and around. You would have to be in a kind of igloo shape to do that. So here it is as if the singer is in the height of the beginning of the curve.

SP: That’s right.

CCB: In these last minutes that we have I thought there are a few things I wouldn’t like to not say or not to evoke. And one of them is the questions of ghosts and the uncanny and the feminism, again. Because I think the voices, when you hear the voice coming from very near you, even though it is being sung across from the other side, obviously this, the voice, seems to come from a ghost. So there is an immaterial, non-visible being that seems to be with you in this space. Which brings us back to Striptease, to stripteaser who doesn’t appear and somehow is a ghost and invisible. Ghosts are very important, a kind of a parallel story of western culture from the Enlightenment period onwards.

And in particular women were the first writers of gothic novels, like Ann Radcliffe, well before Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in the late 1700s. There was this other thing going on, well before Edgar Allan Poe, as alterity to the history of rationalism. I wanted to know if you ever read those gothic novels and what do you think of the women who wrote these gothic novels and what do you think of this other ghostliness, this uncanny ghostliness as a possibility of basically cutting a space within, breaking the space, something that Adrianne Rich, the poet, wrote about breaking the space. I’ll find it somewhere. I think this question of ghosts just has to be evoked, since we are here and there are ghosts that surround us.

SP: I have to say about Striptease that it was inspired by this Powell/Pressburger movie called The Red Shoes, and at the end of this story the ballerina falls to her death in front of a train actually. They are waiting for her to come to perform but then there´s a hold-up, and they don´t know what´s kept her, and finally the news comes that she is dead, so they decide to go ahead with this performance but they just have this spotlight on the stage instead of her, so there is this ghostly presence of her. People often say that my works have this spectral quality, depending on the work. But I actually don´t know the writers you refer to, pre-Edgar Allan Poe… CCB: Because the other thing is that in these gothic novels the ghosts appear and it is unclear whether it is something of the imagination of the person who is the protagonist or whether it is actually being portrayed as ”real” ghosts. So this space between the ”real” ghost and the possibility that it is rationally explainable as the dreams or the mad mind of the woman in the attic is interesting because these things were written at the time of Isaac Newton and in the very situation of the physics that were certainly not subatomic, and therefore these things seemed rather logical at that time. But if one looks at the quantum physics today, subatomic research, there is no way that anyone that knows anything about that can argue that something can be inside the window and outside the window at the same time. It is impossible to deny that

because it is something that the quantum physics tell us. There is multiversus, many universums, parallel universums, because at that scale it depends on the observation of the physical phenomena, it alters the result of the experiment.

Therefore actually it is almost as if we are going a full circle and what was written in these novels is somewhat the truth when one thinks in the scientific terms today on such a small scale.

But I thought that I could end by reading the last sentences of the text I once wrote –one of the various things I have written about your work.

“But let us go back to the question of the radicality of the repetition. Not only are the chosen songs not her own, Philipsz also chooses in Malmö to repeat three songs written and performed by men. Historically women have been the epitome of the represented and consumed body. So to propose an alternative by denying the image and giving only the voice is in fact quite radical. From this perspective it is notable to consider one of Philipsz’ early works – I keep going back into this – the sound and light installation Striptease in 1999 which was created for the sleazy atmosphere of a strip joint complete with sexy music, glittering stage and dancing red spotlight. In this case, however, the performer never arrived, the audience of viewers was left waiting for the spectacle that never occurred. Just as significantly, in one of the few projects including elements other than her own voice, the sound-film installation The Dead, 2000, Philipsz sings an old Irish folk song called The Lass of Aughrim about a destitute girl abandoned by her lover. The work also includes the black 45-mm projection. As the black film deteriorates, white flecks begin to appear on the film stock. Philipsz operates the form of repetition, reinterpretation of John

Huston’s film based on the James Joyce story The Dead by singing the song that has the devastating effect on the heroine while blanking out all imagery.

A common concern of women throughout modernity has been how to recover the voice in a world were women did not traditionally have the authorial voice at all and it had to be invented from scratch. Adrianne Rich, poet and feminist, has often written about the importance of re-reading the dominant culture from your own perspective, re-interpreting it. Two verses from the poem by Adrianne are: ”This is the oppressors language yet I need it to talk to you”. For Rich, therefore, the repetition and reinterpretation becomes a cultural strategy.

In her 1972 essay ’When we dead awaken – Writing as re-vision’, Rich pointed out: ”Re-vision, the act of looking back, seen with fresh eyes, entering the old text from the new critical direction is for the women more than the chapter of culture history, it’s an act of survival. Until we can understand the assumptions in which we are drenched we cannot know ourselves. And this drive for self-knowledge for women is more than a search for the identity. It is part of our refusal of self-destructiveness of male-dominated society. We need to know the writing of the past and know it differently that we have ever known it. Not to pass on a tradition but to break its hold on us.” Again that association between repetition on the one hand and loss separation on the other, both necessary for the existence of the subjectivity that appears in Rich’s writings, and I quote the poem: “I wanted to see this before I leave, the experience of the repetition as death, the failure of criticism, to locate the pain, the poster in the bus, the set, my bleeding is under control.” Maybe she is referring to a poster that says something about the protection of women that have been beaten, you can telephone this number and complain. Philipsz’ naked voice, unable to hide behind the musical accompaniment, fails. She tries to repeat and inevitably she cannot do that exactly. And there is a beauty in that impossibility, the impossibility of achieving – I wrote perfection, her voice is so far from perfection that I think this is an understatement. I mean the fragility of your cracking voice is absolutely very special. – In 2001 she repeated and sang the entire David Bowie CD-album Ziggy Stardust. Song after song until the ultimate and last rock’n’roll suicide that marks the fall of Ziggy. Initially conceived as a CD to use as an installation in Glasgow, she published the CD with Pork Salad Press in 2004, giving over to anyone listening to it at home the entire effort and failure. Yet here lies the truly political nature of Philipsz’ practice, a celebration of non-productive behavior, the repetitions or acts against signature, celebrity, originality and authority. Repetitions of tradition breaking its hold over us. And even this must be done carefully without authority, allowing for pain. Philipsz’ pitch is not perfect, her voice sounds fragile as if it might break at any moment. It recalls singing alone in the empty house because you are afraid. You sing to fill the emptiness and to show that you are brave. But the fear almost breaks your voice. Berliinissä asuva skotlantilainen taiteilija Susan Philipsz (s. 1965) on kuvanveistäjä, joka käyttää ilmaisuvälineenään ääntä.

Philipszin tuotannossa laulut koskettavat ihmisten kollektiivista muistia ja tuovat siten näkökulman yhteisöllisyyteen. Museo- ja gallerianäyttelyiden lisäksi Philipsz on toteuttanut useita ääniteoksia julkisiin tiloihin vuodesta 1995 lähtien. Näissä teoksissa kokemus paikasta ja kontekstista – esimerkiksi kirkosta, supermarketista, auditoriosta – muotoutuu olennaiseksi osaksi taideteosta.

Philipsz luo veistoksia äänen avulla. Häntä kiinnostavat tilaan liittyvät arvot sekä se, kuinka ääni määrittelee arkkitehtuuria. Taiteilijan työskentelyn lähtökohtia ovat myös laulun psykologiset vaikutukset: laulu voi herättää välittömiä tunteita ja muistoja korostaen kuulijan kokemusta itsestään tilassa.

The Scottish artist Susan Philipsz (b. 1965), living in Berlin, is a sculptor who uses sound as her medium.

The songs used by Philipsz in her works trigger people’s collective memory and thus present another way of looking at a community. In addition to museum and gallery exhibitions, she has created several sound pieces in public spaces since 1995. In these works location and context – e.g. a church, a supermarket, an auditorium – are an integral part of the artwork.

Philipsz creates sculptures using sound. She is interested in the values related to space and how sound can define architecture. The psychological effects of song and the way songs can evoke immediate emotions and memories, emphasizing the listener´s spatial perception of the self, are some of the key elements of Philipsz’ approach.

John Cage: 4’33’’ IHME-päivät 2010 avattiin säveltäjä ja käsitetaiteilija Carl Michael von Hausswolffin sekä säveltäjä, muusikko ja äänitaiteilija Petri Kuljuntaustan esityksellä John Cagen teoksesta 4’33’’. Soittimiksi oli valittu 1950-luvun nostalgiset Fender Telecaster -kitarat Fender Bassman -vahvistimien kera. Esitys houkut­teli paikalle hyvin motivoituneen yleisöjoukon.

4’33’’ on yhdysvaltalaisen avantgarde-säveltäjä John Cagen (1912–1992) vuonna 1952 säveltämä teos, jonka nuotit ohjaavat soittajaa olemaan soittamatta teoksen kolmen osan ajan. Soittimien valinta on vapaa. Vaikka teosta kuvataan usein neljäksi ja puoleksi minuutiksi täydellistä hiljaisuutta, koostuu se niistä ympäristön äänistä, joita kuullaan esityksen aikana. Teoksesta 4’33’’ tuli Cagen tunnetuin ja eniten keskustelua herättänyt sävellys, jota myös Cage itse kuvaili tärkeimmäksi teoksekseen.

Carl Michael von Hausswolff syntyi 1956 Linköpingissä Ruotsissa. 1970-luvun lopusta lähtien Hausswolff on työskennellyt säveltäjänä käyttäen pääinstrumenttinaan kasettinauhuria. Hän on myös käsitetaiteilija, joka tekee performansseja, valo- ja ääni-installaatioita ja valokuvaa. Hausswolff on konsertoinut ympäri Eurooppaa sekä Pohjois-Amerikassa ja Aasiassa. Lisäksi hän on toiminut kuraattorina nykytaiteen kentällä.

Petri Kuljuntausta on säveltäjä, muusikko ja äänitaiteilija. Hän on säveltänyt digitaalista musiikkia kokeellisiin elokuviin, taideteoksiin ja tanssiprojekteihin sekä tehnyt media- ja ääni-installaatioita museoihin, gallerioihin ja konserttisaleihin. Kuljuntaustan teoksia on esitetty monissa Euroopan maissa, Australiassa ja USA:ssa, ja hän on julkaissut musiikkia useilla levymerkeillä myös kansainvälisesti.

John Cage: 4’33’’ The IHME Days opened with John Cage´s composition performed by composer and conceptual artist Carl Michael von Hausswolff and composer, musician and sound artist Petri Kuljuntausta. The instruments were nostalgic 1950s Fender Telecaster guitars with Fender Bassman loudspeakers. The performance attracted a highly motivated group of audience to attend.

4’33’’ is a composition by American avant-garde composer John Cage (1912– 1992). It was composed in 1952 for any instrument and the score instructs the performer not to play the instrument during the entire duration of the piece throughout the three movements. Although commonly perceived as “four minutes thirty-three seconds of silence”, the piece actually consists of the sounds of the environment that the listeners hear while it is performed. Over the years, 4’33’’ became Cage’s most famous and most controversial composition. Cage himself stated that it was his most important work.

Carl Michael von Hausswolff was born in 1956 in Linköping, Sweden. Since the end of the 1970s, Hausswolf has worked as a composer using the tape recorder as his main instrument and as a conceptual visual artist working with performance art, light and sound installations and photography. Hausswolff’s concerts have been performed throughout Europe and in North America and Asia. He has also curated contemporary art exhibitions.

Petri Kuljuntausta is a composer, musician and sound artist. Kuljuntausta has composed digital music for experimental films, visual art and dance projects and created media and sound installations for museums, galleries and concert halls. His works have been performed in many European countries, Australia and the USA and he has made recordings for various labels around the world.

Hyvä lukija, Kutsun sinut iltalaulukävelylle kanssani auringonlaskun aikaan, läpi hämärän hetken, Helsingin Kauppatorilta Vanhalle ylioppilastalolle pitkin ydinkeskustan syrjäkatuja. Laulan kulkiessani hiljaisia pieniä ääniä illaksi muuttuvan kaupungin äänten kanssa, kuulemastani ja kanssakulkijoistani vaikuttuen. Kun hämärtyy, on helpompi avautua kuulemaan, herkistyä myös sille, joka ei ole meille tyrkyllä. Jos haluat, voit ottaa osaa lauluun omalla äänelläsi, rosoisella tai kirkkaalla, kuuluvalla tai ihan hiljaisella, sellaisella joka on sinulle luonteva. Se ei ole yhtä kaikki välttämätöntä. Tarkoituksena ei ole peitota muuta ympäröivää elämää laululla, vaan säilyttää vieraanvaraisuutta sitä kohtaan.

On tarpeellista karata välillä jatkuvaan kommunikaatioon pyrkivältä yhteiselämän systeemiltä ja tehdä tilaa hiljaisuudelle ja yksinäisyydelle, myös yhdessä toisten kanssa. Hiljentymällä voi moninkertaistaa elämän kohtaamisia, ei ainoastaan ihmisten välillä, mutta myös ajatusten ja tapahtumien, äänien ja liikehdintöjen.

Heidi Fast: Night Song Walk Sound artist and researcher Heidi Fast invited people on a Night Song Walk in the Helsinki city center. Participants were required to sign up in advance.

Dear Reader, I am inviting you to join me on a night song walk, during sunset, through a moment of twilight, from the Kauppatori Market Square to the Old Student House, along the side streets of the city center. As I walk, I will sing small, silent sounds in resonance with the sounds of a city turning towards dusk, letting myself be affected by what I hear and who I walk with. When the day grows dim, it is easier to open up to listening, and to meet also with what is not imposed upon us. If you want, you can take part in the singing with your own voice, be it rugged or clear, loud or silent, just the voice that comes natural to you. It´s not however necessary. The idea is not to cover the surrounding life with singing but to remain in a state of hospitability towards it.

Sometimes it is necessary to run from the system of cohabitation aiming for constant communication, and prepare spaces for silence and solitude, also together with other people. By decelerating, quieting down, it is possible to multiply encounters in life, not only between people but also between thoughts and events, sounds and movements.

We will meet in the middle of the Kauppatori Market Square, by a tall monument called Keisarinnankivi, on Sunday, 27 March 2010, at 7 p.m. Prepare to spend about an hour on the walk and brace yourself with attentiveness to tune in with the surrounding life. The invitation is for people of all ages, anyone who wishes to attend this walk. After the walk, warm drinks will be served at the Old Student House, and a space for discussion is opened, if you wish so.

Filosofi Tuomas Nevanlinnan tuomaroima Oikeusjuttu marssitti IHME-päivillä yleisön eteen kuuman puheenaiheen: välineellistääkö vaatimus kulttuurin ja talouden yhteistyöstä taiteen ja mitä tapahtuu taiteen perusarvoille?

Syyttäjänä debatissa toimi taiteilija Antti Majava ja puolustajana taidemanageri Kira Sjöberg todistajineen. Majavan todistaja oli kuvataiteilija Minna Heikinaho; puolustajan yllätystodistajaksi saapui pitkän uran galleristina tehnyt Krista Mikkola.

Oikeusjutun esityskieli oli suomi.

Antti Majava alusti aihetta seuraavasti: ”Viime kuukausina on julkistettu useampia hallituksen ja ministeriöiden tilaamia raportteja, joissa määritellään kulttuuria ja sen tulevaisuutta. Näitä yhdistää kulttuurin ja talouselämän korostaminen. Taustalla vaikuttaa yhteinen havainto Suomen ajautumisesta taloudelliseen, henkiseen ja kulttuuriseen kriisiin, josta voidaan selviytyä vain toteuttamalla suuria rakenteellisia ja ajattelutapojen muutoksia.”

Majavan asettamat syytteet olivat: 1) Raportit sijoittavat taiteen ja sen arvopohjan määrittämisen prosessin kilpailutalouden menestystä luovaksi resurssiksi ja siten raportit merkittävällä tavalla osallistuvat suomalaisen hyvinvointiyhteiskunnan henkisen ja kulttuurisen perustan purkamiseen.

2) Raportit eivät tuo esille omaa sitoutumistaan tiettyihin poliittisiin intressipiireihin ja niiden ideologisiin tavoitteisiin.

3) Nimeämällä taiteen ja yritysten yhteistyön esteeksi perusteettomat ennakkoluulot, mitätöidään taiteen toimijoiden korkean koulutuksen ja usein poikkeuksellisen laajan kansainvälisen toiminnan ja verkostojen kautta syntynyt kriittinen maailmankuva. Ennakkoluulojen poistaminen ja mm. yrittäjyysopetuksen ulottaminen taideakatemioiden opintosuunnitelmiin heikentää oleellisesti taiteen mahdollisuutta tuottaa kipeästi kaivattuja vaihtoehtoisia todellisuuskäsityksiä ja merkityksen muodostamisen prosesseja.

4) Taiteen toimijoiden edellytetään osallistuvan yrityselämän toimintaan ja päämääriin sekä omaksuvan talouselämän ihanteita. Yhteistyöltä ei kuitenkaan edellytetä vastavuoroisuutta, jossa talouselämän edustajat tutustuisivat taiteelliseen ajatteluun ja soveltaisivat taiteen kriittisiä ja kyseenalaistavia sisältöjä myös yritysten toiminnassa.

Tuomas Nevanlinnan tuomio: (Toimitettu tallenteen pohjalta) Syyte 1) Ymmärrän syytöksen hengen hyvin. Katson kuitenkin, että sen muotoilu on hieman epämääräinen, sillä taiteen ja taiteellisten arvojen valjastaminen kilpailutalouteen on jo tapahtunut tässä immateriaalitaloudessa ja myös suomalaisen hyvinvointivaltio perusta on monessa mielessä jo rapautunut. Tästä syystä olisin taipuvainen vapauttamaan puolustuksen syytteestä, vaikka ymmärränkin sen poliittisen kärjen.

Syyte 2) Toista syytöstä pidän hyvin olennaisena syytöksenä – tämä on tyypillistä luovuus- ja innovaatiopuheelle sekä erilaisille ajatushautomoille, jotka esittävät visioitaan julkisuudessa. Sama asia oli havaittavissa myös puolustuksen retoriikassa tänään. Puhutaan yleisistä asioista, ikuisista asioista, ennakkoluuloista ja asenteista… Puhutaan teknologian kehittämisestä, puhutaan taloudesta jonakin yleisenä epäproblemaattisena asiana, jonka hyvinvointi tuottaa kaikille

hyvinvointia. Se on epäpoliittista puhetta, ideologista puhetta, puhetta, joka peittää oman poliittisuutensa. Näillä näköisraporteilla, joita päättäjät nykyään tilaavat entisten muotokuvien sijasta, – kuten kuvataiteilija Katja Tukiainen herkullisesti totesi Helsingin Sanomissa – on taipumus piilottaa oma poliittisuutensa. Tässä ilman muuta langetan tuomion.

Syyte 3) Kolmanneksi syyttäjä Majava puhui taiteilijoiden koulutuksesta ja yrittäjyysopetuksen ulottamisesta taideakatemioihin, mikä heikentää oleellisesti taiteen mahdollisuutta tuottaa vaihtoehtoisia todellisuuskäsityksiä. Myös tässä langetan tuomion, mielestäni syytös osuu kohteeseensa. Kyse on yhä siitä nykytalouden ristiriidasta, joka tarvitsee vapaita tiloja, mutta samalla yrittää kutistaa niiden hyödyntämisvaran mahdollisimman lyhyeksi.

Syyte 4) Neljänneksi Majava totesi, että nykytaiteen toimijoiden ja yritysten yhteistyöltä ei edellytetä vastavuoroisuutta, jossa talouselämän edustajat tutustuisivat taloudelliseen ajatteluun ja soveltaisivat taiteen kriittisiä ja kyseenalaistavia sisältöjä myös yritysten toiminnassa. Vapautan puolustuksen yksinkertaisesti siitä syystä, että tämä on jo tapahtunut. Niin sanotun uuden työn logiikka on eräässä mielessä muuttunut taiteelliseksi, mutta tämä ei tarkoita sitä, että prosessi olisi ongelmaton. Perusongelma lienee se, että projektit, joita talouden ja yritysten piirissä tehdään, ovat luonteeltaan heteronomisia. Ne ovat yrityksen voitontavoittelulle alistettuja hankkeita, jotka eivät ole omaehtoisia, taiteilijan omalla logiikalla valitsemia hankkeita. Ymmärrän siis tämänkin syytöksen hengen.

Kaiken kaikkiaan olisin painottanut enemmän kulttuuripolitiikan muutoksen kontekstia. Kyse ei ole vain siitä ikiaikaisesta prosessista, jossa taiteilijan valmis tuote markkinoidaan eteenpäin – tätähän puolustus mielellään painotti – näin on tapahtunut aina ja näin varmaan tulee tapahtumaan. Kysymys on laajemmasta kulttuuriteollisuuden ja brändäyksen leviämisestä sekä talouden sisään että sieltä käsin taiteen vapaisiin tiloihin.

Langetan siis kaksi tuomiota ja rangaistus on tietysti se, että vastaaja vapautetaan yhteiskuntapalvelusta. Vastaaja on palvellut yhteiskuntaa jo aivan tarpeeksi ja tästä lähtien hän saa kävellä vapaana miehenä ympäriinsä. Yhteiskuntapalvelusta hänet ehdottomasti erotetaan. Tämä on lopullinen päätös ja sillä ei ole muutoksenhakuoikeutta, mutta siitä voi valittaa loputtomiin. Käsittely on päättynyt, keskustelu jatkuu.

The Trial The Trial, with philosopher Tuomas Nevanlinna serving as the judge, called a hot topic to the stand at the IHME Days: Is art instrumentalized by the demands for collaboration between culture and economy, and what will happen to the basic values of art?

The prosecutor in the debate was artist Antti Majava and the defender was art manager Kira SjĂśberg with witnesses; Krista Mikkola, who has had a long career as a gallerist, showed up as a surprise witness for the defense.

The trial was held in Finnish.

Antti Majava introduced the topic as follows: “Several reports commissioned by the government and ministries have been commissioned in the last few months in which culture and its future are defined. What they have in common is an emphasis on culture in the context of economy. In the background there is a general perception that Finland is driven towards an economic, spiritual and cultural crisis, which can only be overcome by carrying out major structural and conceptual changes.�

The charges read by Majava were: 1) The reports position art and the process of defining its value basis as a resource for creating success in competition economy and thus play a significant part in the dissolving of the intellectual and cultural foundation of Finnish welfare society.

2) The reports do not articulate their own commitment to certain political spheres of interest and their ideological goals.

3) Naming unjustified prejudices as an obstacle for collaboration between art and business undercuts the critical worldview born from the high education of operators in the field of art and from their often exceptionally broad international involvement and networks. Doing away with these prejudices and, for example, extending entrepreneurship training to the curricula of art academies crucially weakens the possibility of art to produce much needed alternative perceptions of reality and alternative meaning making processes.

4) Operators in the field of art are required to take part in the functioning and goals of the business world and to adopt ideals of economy. The cooperation does not however call for reciprocity, where representatives of the economic world would acquaint themselves with artistic thinking and apply the critical and questioning contents of art also to the practice of business.

Tuomas Nevanlinna’s sentence: (Edited on basis of recording) Charge 1) I understand the spirit of the charge well. I must, however, state that the formulation of the charge is somewhat ambiguous, since the harnessing of art and artistic values into the service of competition economy has already happened in the present immaterial economy and the basis of the Finnish welfare state has in many senses already started to crumble. On these grounds, I am inclined to release the Defense from the charge, even if I do understand its political cogency.

Charge 2) I regard the second charge as highly essential – this is something typical of creativity and innovation talk and these different think-tanks we have publicly presenting their visions. The same could also be seen in the rhetoric of the Defense today. The talk revolves around general issues, eternal issues, prejudi-

ces and attitudes...It addresses technological development, economy as some kind of a general, unproblematic thing whose well-being produces well-being for everyone. It is apolitical talk, ideological talk, talk that conceals its own political nature. These showcase reports – that decision makers nowadays like to commission in lieu of portraits – as artist Katja Tukianen deliciously stated in the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper – have a tendency to hide their own political agenda. In this case, I unequivocally find the defendant guilty.

Charge 3) In the third charge, Majava spoke about artist education and extending entrepreneurship training to art academies, which crucially weakens the possibility to produce alternative perceptions of reality. Here I also deem the defendant guilty, I find the charge well directed. It is, again, a question of the conflict of today’s economy as it needs free spaces but at the same time also tries to shrink their range of utilization into being as short as possible.

Charge 4) In the fourth charge, Majava remarked that the cooperation between operators in the field of art and business does not call for reciprocity, where representatives of the economic world would acquaint themselves with artistic thinking and apply the critical and questioning contents of art also to the practice of business. I release the defense from the charge simply for the reason that this is something that has already occurred. The logic of so-called ‘new employment’ has in a certain sense become artistic, but it doesn’t mean that the process would be problem-free. The main problem probably is that the projects carried out in the sphere of economy and business are heteronomous by nature. They are projects submitted to businesses’ profit making goals, and not autonomous, chosen by artists on the basis of their own logic. So I understand the spirit of this charge, too.

All in all, I would have focused more on the context of change in cultural policy.

It is not just a question of the age-old process where an artist’s finished product is marketed forward – something that the defense liked to emphasize – which has always happened and probably always will happen. It is a question of a wider spreading of cultural industry and brand building both into the sphere of economy, and from there, to the free spaces of art.

I hereby pass two sentences and the penalty of course is that the defendant will be released from civil service. The defendant has already done quite enough civil service, and is allowed, from heron, to walk around as a free man.

He is absolutely discharged from serving the society. This is my final verdict and there is no right of appeal, but complaints can be filed about it eternally.

The trial is over, the discussion continues.

IHME-editio Kauhuelokuvien sävelet toivottivat hyvää yötä YLE Teemalla IHME-nykytaidefestivaalia 2010 edelsi IHME-editio, Susan Philipszin ääniteos Sleep Close and Fast. Teoksen ensiesitys oli syyskuussa 2009 YLE Teemalla ja se nähtiin kanavalla kahden viikon ajan illan viimeisenä ohjelmana. Sleep Close and Fast oli teos, jossa taiteilijan ”tilana” toimi televisio – ja siten myös ihmisten olohuoneet.

IHME-editiossa kuultiin kaksi elokuvasävelmää Philipszin itsensä laulamana.

Lauluiksi taiteilija oli valinnut kehtolaulut kauhuelokuvista Uhrijuhla (The Wicker Man, ohjaus Robin Hardy, 1972) ja Rosemaryn painajainen (Rosemary´s Baby, ohjaus Roman Polanski, 1968). Kuvaruutu oli teoksen keston ajan musta.

Minimalistisesta graafisesta ilmeestä vastasi suunnittelutoimisto Kokoro&Moi. Philipszin lähtökohdat ovat usein populaarimusiikissa ja elokuvien tunnussävelissä. Hän laulaa teoksissaan yleensä ilman säestystä melankolisia sävelmiä, jotka käsittelevät poissaoloa, menetystä ja kaipausta.

IHME Edition Lullabies from Horror Movies Wishing Good Night on YLE Teema after Closedown The lullabies of Susan Philipsz´ IHME Edition, Sleep Close and Fast, were broadcast on the YLE Teema TV channel in September 2009 for two weeks every night after the closedown of programs. The Edition preceded Susan Philipsz’ IHME Project 2010. Sleep Close and Fast was a work where TV – and people’s living rooms – served as the artist’s ‘space’.

The first song of the edition was from Robin Hardy´s cult film The Wicker Man (1972). The second song was the Lullaby from Roman Polanski´s Rosemary´s baby (1968). These two film compositions were heard sung by the artist herself.

They were played to a black screen. The minimalist graphic design of the work was created by Kokoro&Moi. Philipsz often uses popular music and film themes as the basis of her art. In her works she sings – usually a cappella – melancholy tunes that deal with absence, loss and longing.

IHME-nykytaidefestivaali The IHME Contemporary Art Festival IHME-nykytaidefestivaalin järjestää Taidesäätiö Pro Arte. Säätiö keskittyy toiminnassaan kuvataiteeseen: sen tarkoituksena on edistää kuvataiteen asemaa ja näkyvyyttä, kehittää kuvataiteen yleisösuhdetta ja saavutettavuutta sekä lisätä keskustelua nykytaiteesta. Toiminnan perustan muodostavat vuosittaiset IHME-teos, IHME-päivät ja IHME-editiot.

The IHME Contemporary Art Festival is hosted by Pro Arte Foundation Finland.

Pro Arte Foundation Finland focuses exclusively on the visual arts. Its mandate is to promote the status and visibility of art, improve its public relations and accessibility and also to broaden public discourse on contemporary art. The work is built around the annual IHME, which consist of the IHME Project, the IHME Days and the IHME Editions.

The Finnish word IHME means ‘miracle’ or ‘wonder’. However, in daily use it appears in a variety of phrases, meaning something strange, weird, something that awakens curiosity.

IHME-teos / IHME Project Taidesäätiö Pro Arte kutsuu vuosittain yhden kansainvälisen taiteilijan tai taiteilijaryhmän toteuttamaan IHME-teoksen julkiseen tilaan pääkaupunkiseudulla.

Taiteilija perehtyy teosta suunnitellessaan paikalliseen yhteisöön, paikkaan ja tilanteeseen. Tilapäinen taideteos antaa yleisölle mahdollisuuden löytää uusia näkökulmia lähiympäristöönsä, koskettaa yleisön kollektiivista muistia ja herättää keskustelua ajankohtaisista aiheista.

Each year, Pro Arte Foundation Finland will invite an internationally recognized visual artist or group of artists to create a new, temporary work of art, the IHME Project, in a public space in the Helsinki metropolitan region of Finland. The artist will get to know the local community, the site and the situation where the IHME Project is to take place. The artwork gives the public opportunities for discovering new ways of looking at their immediate environment, touches the public’s collective memory and prompts discussion of topical subjects.

Vuosittain järjestettävien kuvataiteen päivien eli IHME-päivien tarkoituksena on lisätä ymmärrystä ja kiinnostusta kuvataidetta kohtaan. Päivät koostuvat luennoista, keskusteluista, elokuvista ja työpajoista. Niihin liittyy keskustelua IHME-teoksen aiheista sekä taidekasvatusta ja julkaisutoimintaa.

IHME-editiot ovat toistettavia tai monistettavia taideteoksia tai julkaisuja. IHME-editio pyrkii luomaan ennakkoluulottoman ja yllättävän kohtaamisen nykytaiteen ja yleisön välille.

The aim of the ”days for art”, the IHME Days, is to increase understanding of and interest in visual art. The IHME Days include lectures, discussions, film screenings and workshops. They are linked with a discussion about the themes of the IHME Project and with art education and publishing.

The IHME Edition consists of publications, along with repeatable or reproducible artworks. The aim of the IHME Edition is to create a surprising, open-ended situation for an encounter between contemporary art and the public.

IHME-nykytaidefestivaali on vuosittainen tapahtuma, jonka ytimessä on kansainvälisen taiteilijan toteuttama IHME-teos julkisessa tilassa. IHMEen tarkoituksena on edistää kuvataiteen näkyvyyttä ja yleisösuhdetta sekä lisätä keskustelua nykytaiteesta. Tämä julkaisu dokumentoi IHME-festivaalin vuodelta 2010. Sen kohokohtia olivat Susan Philipszin ääni-installaatio Kun päivä laskee Helsingin rautatieasemalla sekä taiteilijan ja kuraattori Carolyn Christov-Bakargievin välinen keskustelu.

IHME is an annual event dedicated to contemporary art. As an essential part of IHME, a work is commissioned from an international artist to be carried out in public space. IHME’s aim is to enhance the visibility of visual art and to improve the relationship between visual art and the public. This publication documents the IHME Contemporary Art Festival in 2010. The highlights of the festival were Susan Philipsz’ sound installation When Day Closes at the Helsinki Railway Station and the conversation between the artist and curator Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev.
