In addition to SAP DMe (Execution), the MES solution SAP Digital Manufacturing (SAP DM) also includes SAP DMi (Insights): The module is visionary for production performance management, dashboarding and reporting and makes use of the many possibilities of cloud technology on a global level. But what is SAP DMi in detail?
In the age of digital ecosystems, data is an increasingly important resource. In order to derive economic benefit from data, it is necessary for systems and platforms to communicate with each other and for information to be processed as quickly as possible.

Hyperscalers¹ such as Microsoft are able to consolidate computing power and process mass data almost in real time. This provides users of cloud services with incredibly fast insights into potential improvements and can make tactical changes at short notice. SAP is now following this approach with the SAP DMi module (short for SAP Digital Manufacturing for Insights).

DMi also has its own data layer for production data, which serves as a central storage location for all recorded production data. Raw data from production is automatically structured and assigned to specific data groups in order to make it available for use in analyses and reports. External application programming interfaces (APIs) can also be used to consolidate and evaluate performance data from connected systems (SAP DMe, SAP ME, SAP S/4HANA and non-SAP systems) and tools centrally in SAP DMi in order to further enrich the data basis in the DMi ecosystem.

In addition to monitoring individual events that occur on the shopfloor at a specific point in time, identifying trends over longer periods of time is also a key challenge for production managers. DMi provides support this by creating individual dashboards that visualize selected data over a desired period of time using various types of diagrams, charts tables or images. This type of visualization is called a story and gives your raw data a certain meaning by selecting and filtering it according to different criteria. In this context, it is also possible to visualize the recorded data of selected orders or even individual batch sizes in detail using preconfigured reports. Thanks to these flexible analysis options based on individually configurable production performance indicators, critical points or bottlenecks in production lines can be easily identified and optimized in the next step.
SAP DMi includes a live monitoring module that enables complete visualization of all machines, systems and processes and thus allows full control of ongoing production. With the help of the cloud-based analysis tool, companies can monitor the status of their systems in real time using IoT sensor data and other data sources and intervene proactively when problems are emerging. The motto here is: knowledge and transparency create profit.

Advanced Analytics Predict & Optimize
Using advanced analysis techniques such as machine learning and AI, the cloud-based performance management solution enables comprehensive data analysis and provides valuable insights for improving operational processes. The main focus is on determining the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) of a production facility. This key KPI describes the availability of equipment in relation to production time and sets the degree of utilization, performance and quality in an economically relation. Such comprehensive OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) calculations are carried out on the basis of a preconfigured calculation logic and make it possible to track individual store floor processes in real time at a very detailed level and for individual resources or workstations in order to optimize productivity and quality.
These advanced analyses can also be used by other functions within the DMi solution. For example, it is possible to integrate an OEE KPI into the live monitoring module and track the machines during the operations alongside a visualization of the production line. Alternatively, the preconfigured KPIs can also be used in the context of operational reports and can be brought into an insightful context with other data records from production in the form of tables or diagrams.
