Then in 1947, Weeks led the first national celebration in Alabama. Annually, the countr y recognized its veterans until he died in 1985. President Reagan honored him at the White House in 1982. Weeks earned the Presidential Citizenship Medal as the driving force for the national holiday.

Elizabeth Dole prepared the briefing for President Reagan, calling Weeks the "Father of Veterans Day." 1954 U.S. Representative Ed Rees from Emporia, Kansas, presented a bill establishing the holiday through Congress. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, also from Kansas, signed the bill into law on May 26, 1954.

Congress amended this act on June 1, 1954, replacing "Armistice" with "Veterans," and it has been known as Veterans Day since.

1971 Initially, the country observed Veterans Day on November 11th. However, starting in 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act required the federal holiday to be moved.

Congress scheduled the observance for the fourth Monday of October. In 1978, Congress moved it back to its original celebration on November 11th. While the legal holiday remains on November 11th, if that date happens to be on a Saturday or Sunday, then organizations that formally observe the holiday will generally be closed on the adjacent Friday or Monday, respectively.

• SEND CARE PACKAGES. Communities can gather resources and chip in to make care packages for veterans who live in town, and even to send to troops stationed elsewhere. Include foods and comforts from home.

• BUY FROM VETERANS. Seek out veteran-owned businesses in the area, and then make purchases from their retail stores or utilize their services.

• VOLUNTEER AT A VA HOSPITAL. Spend time with veterans where they receive care for current health needs or past injuries suffered in combat.

• DECORATE CEMETERIES. Honor fallen veterans by placing flowers or flags by their gravesites.

• PARTICIPATE IN A PARADE. If your town hosts a Veterans Day or Remembrance Day parade, find out how you can volunteer or be a part of it. Oftentimes parade officials enable youth groups, such as high school marching bands or scouting troops, to participate in the parade.

• WRITE TO THE NEWSPAPER. Write an op-ed or highlight piece to submit to the newspaper about veterans in the community.

Mention local veterans who have unique stories, or speak about the importance of veterans to the community.

• ASK A VETERAN TO SPEAK. If you work in a school or a community center, ask veterans to share their experiences with area youth.

• VISIT LOCAL MEMORIALS. Spend time visiting memorials nearby and paying homage to the veterans who devoted their time, or even their lives, to service.

Estimates from the Department of Veterans Affairs indicate that there were around 19 million veterans in the United States in 2021.

Veterans Day, observed each year on November 11, honors all those who served honorably in the U.S. military during both wartime and peacetime. Data from the VA indicates that, as of 2016, Gulf War veterans account for the largest share of all U.S. veterans. Roughly 7.8 million veterans served during the Gulf War. Vietnam veterans also make up a sizable percentage of U.S. military veterans, as VA estimates indicate there were approximately 5.9 million veterans who fought in the Vietnam War in 2021. Though veterans need not have served in wartime in order to be recognized and honored on Veterans Day, the vast majority of U.S. veterans served during wartime. – OBITUARIES –

† ABSHIRE On August 22,1931, Marilyn Alice Bullard was born in Three Rivers MI at home to Maude Alice (Burgess) and Cecil LaVern Bullard. She was the middle daughter of the five children in her family. Terrie Joyce Bullard and Willa “June” Bullard Dechnik Alexander were older and Bonnie Cecil Bullard Oakes and Shirley Helen Bullard Carter were younger. Marilyn was the last surviving member of this family.

Marilyn always liked telling stories, from those she made up to tell her mother about her teacher before she even had a teacher to the many true stories about her childhood that she wrote for her children. Family was always important to Marilyn. As a young child, she loved going to her grandmother and grandfather Burgess’ farm to have Sunday dinners with her extended family and to chase the chickens around the yard. Marilyn was a child of the depression and moved many times during her childhood as her father’s employment changed. Consequently, she changed schools 11 times yet still managed to graduate with honors at the age of 16. After graduating from Three Rivers High School in 1948, Marilyn rented an apartment and supported herself by working at the Three Rivers Commercial when she was only 16 years old. When William Abshire whom she had known in high school showed up at her door to ask for a date, she said yes. This was the beginning of their 69 years together.

Marilyn and Bill’s married life took them from Three Rivers to the student apartments in Kalamazoo to Jackson and finally on to Saranac. They spent their last 53 years in the same house on Main Street raising their 8 children and being wonderful grandparents to their grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Marilyn was a very progressive and intelligent woman. After raising her children, she went on to college. She received a Bachelor of Science degree Magna Cum Laude from Aquinas College and worked toward a master’s degree from Western Michigan University. This brought Marilyn and Bill back to the student apartments at Western that they had lived in when starting their married life. Marilyn became an adjunct professor at Aquinas and GVU teaching geography classes to college students.

Marilyn had many hobbies and interests. Some of which included sewing, embroidery, china painting, genealogy, conservation, cooking, singing, all things Irish, John Denver music, the Democratic Party, and she had a special passion for writing. She loved to travel, and she and Bill took their 8 children tent camping throughout the United States in their VW bus. They continued to travel throughout their marriage.

Marilyn’s main passion was being a devoted wife and mother. She played a large role in assisting Bill throughout his college years and professional climb to become a prison warden. Marilyn was truly a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was always there for each and every one of her children.

They all knew they could count on her to help them with problems big or small. Marilyn raised her children with patience, kindness, and love. Marilyn’s family cannot adequately express the depth of love they had for her. She was and will always be deeply loved.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband William Abshire II, parents, sisters, her Christine Abshire, sister and brother-in-law Alice and Art Jeffers, and brother-in-law Jim Abshire.

She is survived by her son William Abshire III, daughters Nancy (Paul) Doyle, Leslie Bendall, Abbie Abshire, Sally Abshire, Robin (Phil) Furman, and Caroline ‘Carrie’ (Marty) Smith. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren James Stewart, Jason Abshire, Jillian Skym, Mark Bendall, Will Bendall, Corinn Wojciechowski, Jean Page, Bob Flanagan, Mary Paiz, Marty Smith, Joshua Smith, 28 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren.

At Marilyn’s request, the family will have a private memorial. In lieu of flowers and in honor of Marilyn’s memory, please tell someone a story of your childhood or read a child a book.

She was born on January 28,1940 in Red Oak, Texas, the daughter of Duey and Lois (Stack) Chapman. Linda married Robert Hoople on December 19, 1964.

Linda enjoyed going fishing, mushroom hunting, reading, puzzles and cooking. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving are her loving husband of 58 years Robert Hoople of Muir; sons, Robert Hoople Jr. of Muir, Timothy Hoople of Muir and Troy Miller of Trufant; grandchildren, Chelcey Hoople and Sierah Hoople and brother Donald (June) Chapman of Louisianna. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Jerry Chapman, Anne Chapman and Kenneth Chapman.

Roy was surrounded by his family at the time of his death. He is survived by his brothers Rodney (Brenda) Jackson and Ray Jackson; sisters, Jill (Mike) Ulanski and Vickie Devers and many nieces and nephews.

Roy was preceded in death by his wife Karen, little brother Mark, parents, and grandparents.

A funeral service will be held at 3 PM Friday November 10th 2023, at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with Pastor Nancy Patera and Pastor Chris Moore officiating. Bryce was born on June 21, 1950, the son of Robert B and Harriet (Thomas) Weeks.

Bryce is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sharon (VanBennekom), sons Andrew (Erica) Weeks and Jason (Crystal) Weeks. Grandchildren Cassidy (Hunter) Stinnett, Alexis Weeks, Sterling Weeks, and Kimberly Faith Weeks. Great-granddaughter Riley Stinnett. Sisters Sandie (Jerry) Risher and Linda (Paul) VanBennekom. Bryce was preceded in death by his parents Robert B Weeks and Harriet Miller and sister Lori Weeks.

Bryce graduated from Saranac High School, class of 1970. He immediately joined the US Marine Corp. where he served from 1970-1973. He was proud to have served his country as a Marine and lived his life by the motto Semper Fi. Bryce and Sharon made their home in Saranac where they raised their sons. Bryce was an active father serving as coach for his sons’ baseball and football teams. He has always remained their mentor throughout his life. As his sons began traveling for their drag racing, Bryce became the Crew Chief which is a title he still holds.

Bryce retired from Detroit Diesel of Grand Rapids, MI. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, racing of all types and spending time with his family.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 10th 11:00 AM at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.

Interment following services with military honors at Saranac Cemetery 2:30 PM. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-7 PM at the funeral home. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to Saranac American Legion. Online condolences may be made at www.lakefuneralhomes.com

† MCKENNA Terrance Joseph McKenna passed on October 4, 2023, with his family by his side. Terry was born the son of Matthew Mark McKenna and Viviann Ione Sorenson on April 17, 1952. He attended SS Peter and Paul Academy in his elementary years and graduated from the Ionia High School in 1970. Terry was a cabinet maker for over 40 years. He was formally trained at the North Bennet St. School in Boston, MA, where he specialized in 18th century furniture making. He worked both independently and with several renowned furniture makers in both New England and New Orleans, LA, continually developing and broadening his knowledge and skills while always implementing his unique creativity. He was instrumental in establishing the Furniture and Design Program at Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, GA, where he shared his knowledge and love of wood through teaching hand skills and fine woodworking, in both classes and outside workshops.

Terry was an adventurous soul and in the 1970s, he accomplished many first ascents with renowned mountain climbers in the northwest United States, Mexico and Canada. He realized a dream in the 1980s when he climbed to the base camp of Mt. Everest. Terry was predeceased by his parents, his twin brother, Tom, brothers, Matthew and James and his sister, Marcia. He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Candace, his adored children, daughter, Ilan and son, Max, as well as by his sister, Carolynn (Connie) Lawler, and brothers, Lary (Dorothy) McKenna and Pat (Deb) McKenna. He is also survived by several brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Terry was always aware of the importance of love, above all else, and expressed it continuously throughout his life with family, friends and strangers. He will be missed every day. A memorial service is being planned for the spring of 2024.

Rep. Johnsen opposes energy mandates that will significantly increase household costs State Rep. Gina Johnsen (R-Lake Odessa) today expressed opposition to energy mandates approved by House Democrats this week, which would strip control from local communities and increase utility bills by $200 a month on average.

In addition to costly, Johnsen says the carbon neutrality plan is irresponsible and rushed.

The plan also circumvents local control by giving the Michigan

Public Service Commission – a three-member board appointed by the governor – the authority to permit large solar and wind construction.

Johnsen said the policies outlined in House Bills 5120-21 are far too extreme and give the people of Michigan zero ability to hold the commission accountable.

consent of the communities that will be affected by them,” Johnsen said. “Local boards and commissions have put a tremendous amount of work into crafting zoning ordinances and master plans after listening to their residents’ concerns. Giving this unelected commission the sole deciding authority allows the governor to ignore what local communities want and fulfill the promises she’s made to Big Solar, adding thousands of square miles of new wind and solar farms in rural communities like ours.”

Senate Bill 271 exponentially increases the state’s existing renewable energy standard that was laid out in a bipartisan plan in 2016. Currently, the energy standard is set at 15%, but the partisan plan approved today would increase the standard more and more over the coming years, ultimately spiking it to 60% by 2033.

Additionally, the bill requires providers to meet a new clean energy standard of 80% by 2035 and 100% by 2040.

Johnsen said plan’s timeline is unrealistic and will be costly to achieve, leading to significantly increased energy costs for Michigan families and job providers.

One study estimates a 96% increase in consumer rates and a 142% increase in commercial rates under the Democrats’ proposed timeline.

“Our utility bills are going to skyrocket,” Johnsen said. “My constituents simply cannot afford what will be a huge price hike. This move is eerily reminiscent of the kind of central

Consumers Energy plans to shut down all coal-fired plants by 2025, while DTE plans to close its last coal plant in 2032.

Johnsen and other Republicans have said a better plan would be to supplement existing natural gas plants with new nuclear power plants, which would be far less expensive than the current proposal whiles still decreasing pollution with greater reliability.

Experts estimate that an entirely carbon-free grid powered by wind and solar will see blackouts of up to 61 hours in the winter when sunlight and winds are low.
