IONIA’S MEMORIAL DAY CELEBRATION
An annual tradition in downtown Ionia will remember and honor veterans who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The annual celebration begins with a parade at 10 a.m. on Main Street in downtown Ionia — traveling from Dexter Street to the Ionia County Courthouse. A ceremony will take place on the courthouse lawn following.
The Ionia VFW is looking for any veterans who wish to show their support by either walking or riding on our float with us. Elsie May Curtiss, age 67 of Lake Odessa, MI passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2025. She was born on May 17, 1957, in Dickson, TN, the daughter of James and Angie (Gonzales) Petty. She married Larry Curtiss on August 31, 1991, at West Berlin Wesleyan Church.
Elsie helped her husband run their farm. She attended West Berlin Wesleyan Church and was a former board member. She had a great sense of humor, was strong-willed and laser focused. She was a great organizer, loved Elvis and traveling, especially her trips to Alaska. She had a great big heart and would do everything for her grandchildren and children.
Elsie is survived by her loving husband of 33 years Larry Curtiss of Lake Odessa. Children Ricky James (Kerry Anne) Kirkendall of Halifax, MA, Willard Noel (Christy) Kirkendall III of Twin Lake, Mark Edward Kirkendall of Muskegon and Larry Ryan Curtiss (Kayla Burns) of Lake Odessa. Grandchildren Kyle Kahler, Curtis Kirkendall, Derek Kirkendall, Mark Kirkendall, Aaron Bower, Jayden Bower, Larry Ryker Curtiss and Lydia Raeann Curtiss. Great grandchildren Ezekiel Kirkendall and James Kirkendall. Brother Vincent “Tito” Earl Petty of TN. Stepmother Carol Anne Petty of FL. Mother-in-law Carmen Curtiss of Lake Odessa. Stepsisters Beck (Mike) Hagmaier of FL and Debbie (Rick) Talley of TN and Sister-in-law Deborah (Paul) Phillips of NY. Along with several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Billy Ray Petty and father-in-law Larry Curtiss.
A celebration of Elsie’s life will be held at West Berlin Wesleyan Church on Tuesday, May 13th at 11:00 am with Pastors John Williams and Bart Denny officiating. A visitation will be held on Monday from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at the Ebenezer Center located across from the church and Tuesday from 10-11 am at the church. Interment at Clarksville Cemetery. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to The Right Door for Hope, Recovery and wellness for Autism Program. Arrangements in care of Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. Cheryl N. Thomas, aged 93 of Grand Rapids, passed away on May 10, 2025. Cheryl was born to Forrest and Fern (Brower) Greene of Saranac on June 15, 1931. After graduating from Saranac High School, Cheryl worked in the Saranac and Ionia area, including supervising the Saranac School’s lunch programs. Later in life, Cheryl worked in the real estate field at Reedy Real Estate in Lowell and retired at age 66 from Village Belles of East Grand Rapids. Cheryl traveled to the South for numerous years during her retirement and enjoyed meeting with her close friends, reading and especially enjoyed following her 4 granddaughters sporting events. She was proceeded in death by her parents Forrest and Fern Greene, brother Orin and sister Marilyn and brother-in-law Vercel Bovee and great-grandson Jacob Cromer. She is survived by her sons Mike Butcher, Randy (Sylvia) Butcher, 4 granddaughters Cari (Andrew) Cromer, Michelle (Andrew) Beers, Katie (Dan) Hughes, Sarah (Karl) Matthews, 9 great-grandchildren Jonathan, Olivia, and Theodore Cromer, Kyla and Kaden Beers, Everly and Ada Hughes, Karter and Kennedy Matthews, and nephew and niece Jim Bovee and Cheri (Keith) Feldman.
