MEMORIAL DAY

REMEMBER & HONOR

BOSTON TOWNSHIP MEMORIAL DAY PROGRAM

On behalf of the Boston Township Board and the Township residents, we would like to take this opportunity to salute all veterans.

Many men and women have made the commitment to serve their country. Some of these hero’s made the ultimate sacrifice and never returned to the family and loved ones they left behind.

Words could never express the gratitude and respect we share for our veterans. It has been their commitment and sacrifice that has protected the freedoms we have today.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

The 2025 Memorial Day program, will be held on the stage, in the Saranac Cemetery on Monday, May 26th, at 10:00 am.

Please join the scholars from the 2025 senior class, the High School Band and this year’s main speaker, Navy Veteran, Dr. Bart Denny. These special people have volunteered to present this year’s program honoring our veterans, both past and present.

ALSO: Thank you to the Saranac American Legion Post 175 and the volunteers who placed 649 flags on the graves of the veterans in the Saranac cemetery.

OBITUARIES

† BOWEN

Beatrice Fern (Weeks) Bowen, age 94, of Saranac, passed away on May 19, 2025. She was born on May 14, 1931 to Glenn and Ethel (Compton) Weeks. Bea married Fred C. Bowen Jr. on November 22, 1947 and they had 72 years together before Fred passed in 2020.

Bea was born into a talented family of six girls and one brother. All seven of the siblings in the family loved to sing and often gathered around the piano as a group to show their talent. Bea and her sisters occasionally sang in public as a group. On one special occasion, Bea was asked by the Tom Hagen band to sing a solo at Tootsie Van Kelly’s, in the Pantlind Hotel in Grand Rapids.

She grew up on a farm and was a hard worker all her life. She was involved in 4-H as a youth and showed her dairy cow Vic, at the Ionia Free Fair. In later years, she became a 4-H leader and remained active at the Free Fair. She drove school bus for 28 years and the kids learned very quickly that you had to behave on her bus! Bea was very independent and was able to live in her own home, by herself, until after she was 93 years old.

Bea kept the books for Fred’s business along with keeping up with her children’s school activities, sports, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and 4-H. Family was always important to Bea and Fred. They all worked together, played together and family gatherings were filled with laughter.

Bea and Fred were members of the Easton United Methodist Church for many years and busy in church activities until their health no longer allowed them to continue.

Bea was preceded in death by her husband Fred, daughter-inlaw Joan Bowen, son-in-law Barry Badge, her parents, sisters, and brother. She is survived by her children, Yvonne (Everett) Binder, Dennis (Nanci Zeran) Bowen, Cathy Badge, Tom (Jackie) Bowen, Brian (Kelly) Bowen, and Jeff (Paula) Bowen, 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild.

The family would like to thank Green Acres of Lowell, Care Link Hospice and all the wonderful people who gave such loving care to our mother.

A private celebration of life will take place at a later date. Donations, in memory of Bea Bowen, may be made to the Easton United Methodist Church, 4970 Potters Road, Ionia, MI 48846 or to the Boston Saranac Historical Society, P.O. Box 565, Saranac, MI 48881.

Five-StarAwardrecognizesoutstandingcustomerservice

Ionia Michigan — Farm Depot of Caro, Ionia and Schoolcraft Michigan recently achieved a five-star rating from AGCO Corporation’s in its 2024 Dealer Excellence Program annual dealer evaluation.

Farm Depot was one of only 15 dealers to receive a five-star rating. Scott Erickson of AGCO Corporation notified Farm Depot of their high marks in the Dealer Excellence Program during a recent site visit.

“We’re honored to receive this recognition and designation from AGCO,” Blake Laethem, owner of Farm Depot, says. “I’m proud of the work our entire staff has done to earn it. We’ve worked hard to provide the highest-quality customer service, and we’re proud to stand among the best dealers in the U.S. and Canada.”

A five-star designation represents a high level of performance in all areas of the business,

including sales and marketing, parts and service, operations, and financial management, with a goal of improving customer experience and loyalty.

“At AGCO, we are unwavering in our commitment to placing farmers at the forefront of our mission. Our dealer partners are indispensable, ensuring that we consistently deliver unparalleled customer service and exceed expectations at every turn,” says John Nardulli, Program Manager of North America Distribution Management for AGCO Corporation. FINANCIAL FOCUS® What comes after, ‘I do?’

SubmittedbySamanthaRingler,AAMS™,yourEdwardJonesFinancialAdvisor

Marriage is more than a ceremony — it’s a union of families and finances. When you and your partner are honest with each other about money and financial goals, it can help build trust, leverage your strengths and help pave the way for a financial happily ever after. Since talking about money can be difficult, begin with conversations not so much about money itself but about the things that matter to you. You’ll find these are also your financial priorities and a good way to see if you’re on the same page, or how far apart you might be. Here are a few conversation starters.

•Make a list of short- and longterm goals — from buying a house to retiring early. Do you want children? Will one of you change careers or go back to school? See where your lists overlap and where some goals may be more important to one partner.

•Ease into the financial implications. If you plan to grow your family, would one of you like to stop working or reduce your hours to provide child care? If more schooling is a priority, what kinds of changes might that require?

•Share your feelings about money. How did your family treat money while you were growing up? What does money mean to you — security, freedom, stress

or something else? Are you both spenders or savers, or is there one of each?

Before your big day, or early in your marriage, decide how you’ll blend your financial lives.

•Fully disclose your current financial situation. Discuss each partner’s assets and debts and how, or if, you’ll combine them. There’s no one right answer — the key is for you both to agree. In nine community property states, all assets and debts are shared 50/50 after marriage regardless of individual or joint account status. Check to see whether yours is one of them.

•Align on your budget and spending. This can empower you to spend within your means while moving toward your financial goals.

•Determine who will handle the various tasks of managing money. Who is responsible for which bills, who files the taxes and when will you consult each other on financial decisions like major purchases — a car, perhaps, or a major household appliance?

Once you’re married, there are a few things to address right away. You may want to consult with financial, tax and legal professionals to help avoid pitfalls and identify

opportunities.

•Employer benefits. Newly married employees usually have a 30-day special enrollment period to update certain benefit elections — such as health and life insurance.

•Taxes. Adjust the W-4 tax withholding on your employee forms to reflect your marital status and ask your tax professional which tax-filing status makes sense for you.

•Insurance policies. Combine and update policies and beneficiaries, including adding each other to auto insurance policies if you drive each other’s cars.

•Estate documents. Now with a family, prepare for the unexpected. Create or update a will, medical directive, and financial and health care powers of attorney, and you may want to explore whether a revocable trust is appropriate.

Getting married is perhaps one of the most exciting times of your life. As you commit to a lifetime together, make sure that includes a financial commitment. By starting a habit of financial discussions now and returning to them periodically, you can help set yourselves up for a lifetime of financial compatibility, stability and freedom.

AMERICAN RED CROSS by theSaranacRedCross

Our May 19, 2025 Red Cross Blood Drive at St. Anthony’s Church was a great day! We were thankful for the help of Maggie Peterson, Kennedy Prins and Chloe Simpson (who helped with our refreshments) and all our donors who enjoyed them after donating their life saving blood. Debra Carpenter received her 2 gallon pin, Elizabeth Callihan received her 3 gallon pin, Stephen Rich, David Christner and Patricia Schwenke received their 6 gallon pins, Jennifer Anderson received her 7 gallon pin and Edward Schwenke received his 15 gallon pin! We had 8 Double Red Donors: Michael Barker, Pamela Grieves, Trent Chipman, Robert Troms, Lisa Gustafson, Shelly Martindale, Edward Overbeck and Gordon Kelley.

Pictured are sister donors -Diana Roush, Carolyn Manion and Elizabeth Callihan with their “recruiter”, Cheryl Greiner.

Pictured are Patricia Schwenke and husband, Edward Schwenke (receiving their pins), Michael Turner (our Lansing Red Cross account manager and donor recruitment representative). Mike solves problems, solves computer and donor issues, supplies us with pins, answers all our questions -Mike is a blessing! Seated is an 88 year old neighbor of the Schwenkes who donated his 5th pint of blood. Ron Foote made his first blood donation here in Saranac when he was 85 years old! You help save even more lives when you encourage family and friends to donate blood!

A Big Thank You To Our Readers and Clients!

This is the last issue of the Ionia County Shopper’s Guide. There are many factors that have come into making this difficult decision. The increasing costs of printing and delivery are the major reasons along with the dwindling number of small businesses.

After 57 years of publication it has finally come down to this. My name is John Brown and I purchased the paper from my father, Dwight Brown, in 1990. Some might remember ‘Brownie’ as the original owner who started the Shopper’s Guide in 1968. He taught me to take care of the people who take care of the business.

I want to show my appreciation to everyone that made the Shopper’s Guide the best advertising value in Ionia County. It would be impossible for me to list them all, so I’ll just say Thank You! And to YOU... my faithful readers... there is hardly a day that goes by that someone doesn’t call, stop by the office, or sees me on the street to tell me how much they appreciate reading the Shopper’s Guide each weekend. I always appreciate the comments.

I would also like to acknowledge a few of my employees who have stuck with me through the years and helped make this publication what it is. First, my daughter Kara came to work here even before graduating from high school in 1997. She has come to love this business as much, if not more, than myself. We really worked hard for her to continue as publisher of this ‘rag’ we affectionately call the ‘Print & Duck’! But I guess it is not to be... Second is Suzie Nystrom. Sue has been the face of my sales team for 39 years and has made my life a lot easier through her charming personality. Then, there is my cantankerous little printer Gary Winters whose smiling face every morning for 46 years made me want to go back to bed. Just kidding, Gary was always there if I needed him for anything. He recently retired and is in a fight with his health. We wish him well... Then there was Carol Benjamin... we parted ways after 46 years on not the best of terms, but I would like her to know how much I appreciated her being there when I needed her the most. I should have been listening more closely to her opinion on certain issues here at the paper! Things might have been different. There were other employees, like Margret Hoopman. Margaret was a hard and honest worker who always gave it her all.

Then there were the carriers who would brave the hot/cold/snowy/rainy/icy weather every weekend to deliver the Shopper’s Guide. Most of the memorable ones have long pasted on, but one I would like to mention would be Harold Irish. There was a time Harold would deliver 3,000 papers each weekend! Thanks Harold!

As much as I am thankful for a lot of great employees, there is one that played a huge part in the demise of my business and my family’s hard work. I had hoped that we could weather the damage she caused, but it became apparent that it just isn’t in the cards.

As for me, like everyone, I’m in a race with ‘Father Time’ and the ‘Grim Reaper’. I know someday they will catch up, but hopefully it will be a long time off! In the meantime I will be enjoying life ‘On Golden Pond’ with my bride of ‘Almost 50 Years’ Frances and Riley, my four-legged furry friend. There’s a ‘honey-do’ list that keeps getting longer and a boat, cooler full of beer, a fishing pole and a buddy or two waiting at the end of the dock.

We will still have an open door to tend to unfinished business. Our hours will not change until this is accomplished!

Thank You and God Bless You All!
