† BIGGS Laurence (“Larry”) J Biggs Jr., age 85, of Lowell, Michigan passed away peacefully on September 28, 2023 with his family at his side. Larry fought a courageous battle with cancer, a disease which diminished his body, but not his spirit. During this past year, Larry made his home in Suttons Bay, Michigan with his daughter, Karen Hassevoort, and son-in-law Steve. He especially enjoyed walks and rides in the wheelchair around the Village and on the Leelanau Trail.

Larry was born on June 9,1938 in Muskegon, the son of Laurence and Dorotha (Bieri) Biggs, Sr. When he was young, Larry’s family lived in Belding where his father worked in small-business retail. They moved to Saranac in 1950, including Larry and his two brothers and two sisters, after purchasing a building (a former furniture store) to begin the adventure of their own small business, a retail variety store. Larry enjoyed skipping part of his 6th grade school year to help his father get the store set up, build displays and stock merchandise.

His family lived in a small apartment above the store where he and his brothers shared a large open room, a drafty space which also served as storage for store supplies. The initial name of the business, “Larry’s 5¢ - $1.00 store”, was renamed simply, “Larry’s” in 1960 when renovations were made to modernize the store front.

Larry was an avid competitor and spectator of a wide variety of sports throughout his life, beginning in high school, including, baseball, tennis, and basketball and later softball and golf. He also loved to fish and especially enjoyed family trips to lakes and streams across the state and the Thursday afternoons when local businesses would shut down and he and his dad (and eventually his brothers) would be “Gone Fishing.” While his responsibilities at the store limited his recreation activities somewhat, Larry balanced schoolwork, sports and his work at the store well. He was an outstanding student at Saranac High School, especially in math, and was the Valedictorian of the class of 1956.

After graduation, he served in the Army (later Reserves) and upon returning home, joined his parents in running the store which he purchased from them in the early 1970’s. This was a true family business that supplied a little of everything the community might need, with a delicious bulk candy counter and fun toy department. Larry was a beloved member of the Saranac business community who was well-known by all in town. He whistled while he worked and was a friend to each person who entered the store. Larry closed the store in 1997, after 47 years in business. He later built his home in Lowell along the Grand River and enjoyed home projects, bird watching, gardening, riding his lawn tractor, listening to music and watching favorite movies and sporting events. He loved his neighbors and was the local grandfather in the neighborhood. Larry was a life-long member of Saranac Community Church and supported numerous local community organizations and events.

Beyond his formal education, Larry was a renaissance man and a true student of the world, interested in every topic under the sun. A voracious reader, he was happy to sit in his easy chair and enjoy good books -- ideally a gripping crime thriller -- for hours on end. Larry was fascinated by science. He subscribed to countless scientific magazines and would often send his grandchildren magazine and newspaper clippings on topics he knew would interest them - from computer science to nutritional neuroscience and nuclear physics - usually with a post-it note attached with some thoughtful observation or question that he would discuss with them on their next visit. He was also a loyal fan of the University of Michigan Wolverines and frequently sported one of a variety of Michigan caps from his wardrobe.

Larry loved participating in activities and events in the area and spending time with his family.

Surviving are his children Larry Biggs III of Saranac and Karen (Steve) Hassevoort of Suttons Bay. Grandchildren Kelsey Hassevoort (Alex Dombos) of Kalamazoo and Andrew (Becca) Hassevoort of Ann Arbor. Siblings Eleanor Talcott of Saranac, Marcia (Bruce) Baird of Lowell, David (Sharon) Biggs of Portland and Virgil (Connie) Biggs of Saranac, as well as many delightful nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law David Talcott.

A Memorial Service celebrating Larry’s life will be held on Thursday, October 26th 10:30 am at Saranac Community Church, lunch to follow. Visitation and sharing October 25th from 5:00-7:00 pm at Lake’s Funeral Home and October 26th from 9:00-10:00 am at the church. A private time for family will be held at the graveside at Saranac Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Saranac Community Church, the Saranac Promise or the Leelanau Trail. She was born November 27, 1939, in Clyde Bank, Scotland, the daughter of Robert and Ruby Garrow. Beth moved to Toronto at the age of 13 and would later move to the United States where she would meet her future husband at Bob Jones University in South Carolina. She married James Frank on July 15, 1960 in Toronto.

They moved to Saranac, serving the Galilee Baptist Church as Pastor and Pastor’s wife for over 40 years.

She is survived by her children; Jay (Sue) Frank of Saranac and Ann (Thomas) Farley of Oklahoma City, OK. Grandchildren; Kristie Farley, Krystal Farley, Bre (Casey) Wood, Allison (Nathan) Poninski, and Maggie (Matt) Austin. Great grandchildren; Cole, Donovan, Logan, Nolan, Chloe, Silas, and Micah. Brother Jim (Lorna) Garrow of Guelph, Ontario. Brothers and sister-in-law Tom (Judy) Frank of Missouri and John (Barb) Frank of Sidney. Nieces and nephews; Lisa, Sara, Josh, Joy, Joel, Jason, Eli, Leah, Evan, and Joel.

Beth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James, her sister Connie Carney, and grandson Keith Frank. She loved being a Pastor’s wife and was very involved with many church activities, especially AWANA. Beth also enjoyed gardening.

Cremation has taken place, and there will be a Memorial Service at the Galilee Baptist Church on Saturday, October 14th, at 10:00 a.m., with Pastor Ryan Morter officiating. All are invited for a luncheon following the service in the gymnasium. There will be a visitation at the church on Friday, October 13th, from 4-7 p.m. in the Walker Room. 4, 2023. She was born on March 7, 1935 in Ionia to Howard and Velma (Lee) Robbins.

Shirley was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She loved her grandkids and going to the Hall. She enjoyed knitting and was an avid walker.

Surviving is her son, David (Roxanne) Stiles of Ionia. Daughters, Christine Jeffery of Greenville, Mary (John) Thalison of Ionia, Cheryl Brown (Tim Hayes) of Lyons and Pamela Lenneman of Ionia. Shirley is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Howard Stiles Jr., son Randy Stiles and second husband Michael Straka.

Beverly was born on November 29, 1923 to Carl and Nora Bliss in Ionia. When she was six the Great Depression started and lasted all through her school years. A few months after her high school graduation, Pearl Harbor was bombed and the United States entered WWII. For the first 25 years of her life the national news was almost always bad, but in spite of all the problems her parents were able to give her a stable and loving upbringing. She was a very good saxophone player in high school and played in a jazz band. After graduation from Ionia High School, she attended County Normal to train to be a country school teacher. She worked as a teacher for two years and then went to work as a secretary at the Ionia County Hospital and eventually applied for a job at Hiler’s Department Store. The day she applied for that job was the luckiest day of her life because that was the day she met Eldon “Bud” McCord. He also worked at Hiler’s. They married in 1947.

In 1958 Bud and Jerry Horrocks decided to establish a partnership and opened Horrock’s Farm Market in Lansing. With much hard work, the business grew and prospered. Beverly worked alongside Bud as the bookkeeper at Horrock’s Farm Market. In 1978, Bud decided to retire and sell his half of the business and they were able to travel. They traveled all over the United States in their travel trailer and also took several trips to Europe.

Beverly has been a lifelong member of First Christian Church in Ionia. Her faith and her church have always been very important to her and has been a very active church member. Her family has always been the most precious thing in her life and she has enjoyed being an active and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She always tried to attend every event her grandchildren were involved in. Beverly also enjoyed walking, reading, Bible study and playing bridge.

Beverly is survived by her three children, Nancy (James) Kelly, Carole (Will) McCord and Steve (Margo) McCord; five beloved grandchildren, Carrie Lich, Robbie McCord, Paul McCord, Leah McCord Zagore and Tommy McCord; seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon R. McCord; granddaughter, Laura Nelson Stibitz and her brothers, Donald Bliss and Ronald Bliss. Religious services will be conducted

by Pastor Kevin Kinsinger at 11:30 a.m., Friday, October 20, 2023 at First Christian Church, 130 E. Washington St., Ionia. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until the time of the service. A luncheon will follow the service at the church. Interment will follow at Easton Township Cemetery. For those wishing, memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church of Ionia. Geraldine married Terry Warner on January 30, 1987, in Florida.

She loved spending time with her family.

Surviving is her husband Terry of Ionia. Children Jessica (Stacy) Hawley of Ionia, Jason Lewis of Florida, Thomas Lewis of Marian and Robert Lewis. 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Michael Oesch and Wayne Sparks and sisters Blanche Ward and Bonne Beard.

GROUNDBREAKING HELD FOR SCHEID PARK IMPROVEMENTS

Saranac Village officials, engineers from consultant Fleis & Vanden Brink of Grand Rapids, and contractors from Grand River Excavating of Saranac, unearth dirt Monday at the groundbreaking for the Scheid Park improvements project. Groundbreaking was held Monday for improvements at Scheid Park including updating accessibility to the existing youth ball fields and construction of a new restroom/concessions building. More than two dozen community members attended the groundbreaking.

"This has been a need for many years," said Tony Koster, Saranac Village's Department of Public Works director. "The Youth League will now have a proper concessions area and the ADA access to the building and all the fields will be a huge improvement. This will also allow us to have restrooms open all year."

A new restroom facility was the No. 1 priority users identified in the Village's Parks & Recreation Master Plan. The current facility, built in 1984, has two restrooms with two stalls each. Village staff were unable to open the restroom this year, due to the extent of repairs it would take to make it usable.

borhood park, which is located along the Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Rail Trail, will include redevelopment of the parking lot area and space between the ballfields, providing a gathering space that is ADA compliant. The repaved portions of the two side parking lots will include new pavement markings, and ADA parking and access.

Storm, sanitary, force main, water, and a new grinder pump will be installed, as well as landscape plantings (deciduous trees and planter pots).

"Scheid Park serves as the focal point for activity in the Village, and providing facilities that promote universal access to recreational resources, is crucial," said Becky Straube!, Saranac Village's Treasurer.

The Village of Saranac received a $300,000 Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund grant to pay for a portion of the project.

"An improvement project like this would not be attainable without grant assistance, and the MDNR has come through for the Village of Saranac on several park projects," Straube! added.

Fleis & VandenBrink (F&V) of Grand Rapids provided grant assistance, design, engineer estimates, construction documentation, bidding, and construction administration for the improvement project.

"Scheid Park will become more of a destination for the community with the im-

provements, and enhance the baseball experience for players and spectators," said Andrew Filler, F&V's project manager. "The new bathroom facilities will also provide a safe and clean space for all users of the park to enjoy."

The Scheid Park Improvements Project will be completed in the spring of 2024.

"On any given day, Scheid Park is a flurry of activity," Straube! added. "Whether it's ballplayers working hard for a win, spectators cheering them on, family/friends celebrating life events at one of the pavilions, children and adults testing their skills at the skatepark or basketball court, parents watching their young children enjoy the playground equipment, or pedestrians/bikers utilizing the paved path that leads to the Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Rail Trail."

The Village Council and Village staff will continue to work diligently, alongside Fleis & VandenBrink, to ensure that Scheid Park remains a viable, safe, up-to-date space for many years to come, Straubel said.

Costumes and candy are synonymous with Halloween.

Individuals may spend weeks or months trying to come up with the perfect costumes for their trick-or-treating excursions or Halloween parties. Many children and adults also enjoy costume themes, in which they dress up to coordinate with others in their group.

There is always a steady selection of classic costumes that appeal to Halloween rev-

elers, including vampires, cats, witches, and pirates.

But one only need look to pop culture to come up with costumes unique to a particular year or era. The following are some costume ideas that figure to be wildly popular in 2023.

• Barbie™: Due to the release of the mid-summer motion picture “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie as the titular character and Ryan Gosling as “Ken,” there are bound to be many pink-clad trick-or-treaters traveling through neighborhoods this fall. Barbie always has had an impressive wardrobe, so fans of the film can dress up in any of her signature looks.

• Geralt of Rivia: “The Witcher” fandom is widespread, and viewers were treated to another season of the Netflix series this summer. This is the final season with Henry Cavill in the titular role (Liam Hemsworth is reportedly set to take over), so fans may be inspired to dress the part for Halloween this year.

• Jigsaw: “Saw X” will be released on October 27, and the Jigsaw Killer might be a choice for those looking to instill fear around the neighborhood.

• Wednesday Addams: Fans took to the inspiring new Addams Family spinoff that explores life through Wednesday’s eyes. With her signature black frocks and pigtails, it doesn’t take much to look like this macabre teen.

• Nepo Baby: The phrase “Nepo Baby” grew wings this year with the spotlight placed on many celebrity kids whose rise to fame may have been pushed along by their successful parents. All it takes is a pair of jeans and plain white T-shirt with “Nepo Baby” on the front to pull off
